Accidentally got this achievement in a party when 2 dps died at the beginning of the encounter. Soul fragments indeed died to the fire patches on the ground.

When you enter the 'spirit world' at 50%, a Dark Hatchling will spawn. Every few seconds, a soul fragment will spawn that channels a heal on the Dark Hatchling. Let 3 spawn, then move them into the flame patches transforming them into Burning Souls. Kill them and then kill the boss to earn your Achievement!

You don't need to kill the boss to get this achievement. Also there seems to be a bug where the achievement counter doesn't get reset.

Might not be bugged, but you have to hit the burning soul to get credit for it. Everyone in my group got it except for me (Tanking). I got 1/3 and only hit one soul.

There is no mob called a "Burning Soul" - The achievement requires you to kill three soul fragments which have the burning soul debuff. The burning soul debuff is gained when they move over a flame patch left by the phoenixes in phase 1.

While in the spirit phase players will occasionally get a debuff informing them that their soul is splitting. When this happens the player should position them self so that there is a fire between them and the phoenix. The debuff on the fragment will continually refresh itself while it is in the fire and will last five seconds after the fragment leaves the fire.

Currently Bugged, We made a couple of attempts somehow the tank's burning souls would not start fresh every pull we did on the boss. He got it as soon as he did the first one after like the third wipe. The Group got it last burning soul. Really weird but its a fairly simple achievement if everyone is on their game.

Can bug in another way not mentioned above. Attempted this tonight with the achievement tracking; the first counted correctly, then other DPS in the group killed a spirit or two without the debuff on them, then one was killed with the debuff but didn't add to my tracker, then a third was killed. My tracker went to 2/3, two others in the group got the achievement. At no point during the fight was I dead until after the achievement had been awarded to the others, and I was dpsing each spirit that had the debuff.

We wiped and tried again, and this time on the 3rd spirit myself and the healer got the achievement without it bugging. No idea what the cause was.

Basically how this works is is in the first and second phase, the phoenix leaves fire behind. In the shadow phase, our tank ran in large circles with the shadowy phoenix, while our DPS did our best to kill as many as we can, trying to stun them in the fire and killing them. 2 were killed outside of fire, and as soon as we got the third one everyone in the group got the achievement, so there no need to kill the boss.

I received this achievement but no one else in the group did and verified they had not completed it. I was the only one killing the fragments, but did have one person in the group hoj one.

Actually fire has everything to do with this achievement. That and killing. Hence the name.

In order for the kill to qualify, the Soul Fragment has to have a burning debuff on it at the time it is killed. The debuff is applied when the Soul Fragment stands in the fire trail left behind by the Phoenix from P1.

Now while it is quite likely that most Soul Fragments will pick up the fire debuff during the course of the fight without any special effort on the part of the group, if you somehow manage to keep them away from that fire, you will not get the achievement.

The Soul Fragments spawn off every member of the party, including the tank. Right after spawning, they don't move for several seconds and have a purplish link to the fire bird. (when spawned, there is a screen announcement indicating which player the Fragment is coming from, not sure if this from the addon DBM or from the encounter itself) The purple link makes it easy for the tank to see where and how many Fragments have spawned. The Soul Fragments are on a one way course to the bird that is stuck to the tank like glue--they buff the bird if they reach it.

As per the achievement, your group has to burn down the Fragments after they walk through fire (their name will change to Burning Soul). The difficulty in this is kiting the bird away from the Fragments (so they don't buff the bird and disappear), kiting the Fragments through the fire, and DPSing the Burning Souls fast enough. Also, even with fast DPS, the adds spawn quick enough so that there will likely be 2 or 3 Fragments out by the time the third one is downed, so the kiting can get hairy.

In this end, it is helpful to have all ranged stack towards one side of the arena; melee, too, should go there if there is enough ranged DPS to down the add quickly after walking through the fire. This becomes even easier if, in Phase 1, the tank slowly kites the fire bird/egg down the center of the arena producing a longitudinal wall of fire. Stacking the other members on the opposite side of the fire wall gives some much needed space between the adds and the bird, making the kite much easier and quicker.

However, a Fragment spawning off the tank makes the kiting more difficult since the tank has to cross to the other side of the fire, increasing the chance that a spawn off another member will inadvertently merge with the bird. If that was the first spawn, it's not really an issue; if it was the second or third spawn, and there are already a few Soul Fragments out, it would probably easier to sacrifice it to the bird so that the other Soul Fragments can walk through the fire. When done with this method, the tank doesn't have to move much at all and the entire encounter becomes rather simple.

If your group is over geared (or contains PUGs who don't follow directions well), instruct everyone not to attack the fire bird AT ALL, don't use AOE, etc. since killing the bird ends the phase and the achievement run will be a failure. If your healer is having a difficult time, the bird could be DPSed down to 50% or so, but this also takes DPS away from the Soul Fragments. In that case, it would be safer just to focus on the achievement first and risk a wipe.

One final comment: this is a personal achievement that does not reset between encounters. This explains how one party member can complete the achievement on the first or second kill.

(I PUGed almost every achievement for Glory of the Cataclysm Hero, and this was the second to last one that I completed-- the last being Ascendant Descendant. At the end of Cataclysm, not many people in Trade chat were interested in completing these. Most group members would at least try this achievement, usually not following directions well.)

Got a response from Blizz just trying to make sure that we were doing it right. I assured them that we were, that all of them were killed while the debuff was still active and that it was set to heroic. I was just told that they would submit it as a bug. Haven't heard anything else, but I have put in another ticket as we tried it again to the same result.

After being frustrated with being unable to complete this achievement, I checked here to discover that it's currently glitched in 5.1. Me and my brother noticed that sometimes the soul fragment would change into a burning soul (and by this I mean the name would actually change). It seemed to change names for a spit second occasionally upon getting the debuff for the first time and also when it is reapplied when taking them through the through the fire. We decided to try to kill one to see if it would count torwards the achievement. After trying for about an hour we managed to kill 2 at the exact same time that had their name actually turned into Burning Soul. So until Blizz makes a fix for this it is absolutely impossible to do this achievement.

Here's a picture of the two dead burning souls and you can see how the achievement did not progress on the right side.

I just did this achievement tonight (2 minutes ago) and all you have to do is during the 2nd phase when the boss casts repentance is kite the soul fragments through the fire on the ground. Their name will change quickly to burning soul then back to soul fragment (which i think is the bug) but kill them anyway. I killed several and let several more get to the http://www.wowhead.com/npc=43927] and then killed one or 2 more before getting the achievement. Soloed this as a 90 surv hunter with a tanking pet with a 481 ilvl. Used mend pet and spirit bond glyphs.

This appears to be fixed today, we just attempted the achievement again using the usual strategy, and all the soul fragments counted towards the achievement. Hooray!

You can despawn the boss by running away around the corner. He will respawn after 1 min or so.

The achievement works this way... In P1 you must kill the fiery bird, so that he will leave a fire pool. After you nuke the boss until 50% P2 begins. A dark blue Phoenix will spawn, which must be kept alive until the achievement is done (which will display during the fight after finishing it). If he dies before, follow my first hint. No need to wait for a second ID until tomorrow. ^^

In P2 little ghosts of yourself will spawn (77k Health points). They must be kited into the fire and die before they reach the Phoenix. They will get a debuff which name i forgot. If they die too late, the Phoenix consumes them and gets stronger by 10%. Even at lvl 90 there is a fail limit. ^^

I did this as level 90 balance druid.

Engaged High Prophet Barim and a Phoenix spawned and leaving a trail of fire behind him. I kited the phoenix around just to have a little bit of fire everywhere.

Boss dropped to 50% hp and ripped my soul from my body. This starts phase 2.

I was sent to spirit realm? shadow realm? spirit world? w.e... There was a shadowy phoenix that followed me around, left him alone for now.

Shadowy copies of myself started spawning and walked towards the phoenix, these shadowformed bastards are the ones needed for the achievement. I kited them so they would walk through the fire that was left around from the phoenix at the start of the fight.

After those shadow replicates stepped into fire, they got a debuff and I killed them. Repeated this 3 times and got the achievement. After that I finished the shadowphoenix and boss.

note: One of the shadow souls didn't catch fire when I was doing this achievement so I actually had to kill 4 of those in the spirit realm. So if you for w.e. reason miss some, dw there will be more than needed for the achievement.

Also be sure that you get the achievement before proceeding to kill the shadowy phoenix. The achievement is granted instantly, not after the boss is dead.

Ok, everyone is making this WAY more complicated than it should be. Here are the steps to complete this:

1. During phase 1, a red phoenix will spawn. It leaves fire on the ground. Make sure a single fire spot is on the ground before damaging the boss to 50%.
2. During phase 2, a purple phoenix will spawn. It will spawn copies of yourself named Soul Fragment which will walk toward you. Position yourself between the phoenix and the fire that was spawned in Phase 1, the name of the Soul Fragment will change to Burning Fragment.
3. Kill 3 Burning Fragments. Done, achievement earned.

At level 100 dk, I stripped naked and used a low level weapon to get him to half health. Then was able to get to spirit sequence to kill the 3 spirits of me. I summoned my ghoul to help finish Barim off.

TLDR:

1) Walk up to the boss and wait for the red phoenix

2) Drag the red phoenix around so there's fire on the ground

3) Punch the boss to just below 50% hp and wait for the purple phoenix

4) Wait for the purple phoenix to spawn copies of you, drag them through the red phoenix's fire, then kill them.

You'll get the achieve as soon as you've killed three copies; before the boss is dead.

I'm going to say this achieve is, at the very least, glitchy. As a 120, I stripped down to no gear so not to kill him. I am a hunter, so I MD with a single punch to my pet so I could have his big body out of the way...that won't trigger what you need, so wait. You need the fire bird to make it's appearance and drag it around a little bit and leave fire spots for the souls to walk through. I found clustering them up was best, rather than being satisfied with gambling I was a master of guiding them through one or two spots.

After I did this, I went and punched him one more time and this tossed me into the 'bow to me', and this sets you where you want. Now purple/shadow bird is going to make it's appearance, and you want to drag this thing over to the fire and this is where I found it glitchy. The souls would spawn, and you'd see 'burning' pop and unpop while they were still in the fire. I just killed, and the most ironic one of all was one that wasn't even walking in the fire, nor changed...I was running out of time, and I just thought. "Screw it...it's going to be a FD reset anyway." To my surprise I got it.

So I really don't know what is up with this achieve . My advice is even if they don't have the name burning in it, but are burning or you are close to end like I was and have nothing to loose...hey, just go for it .

This achievement, even nowadays, in BFA is quite "tricky" to be done. I failed a few times due the fact that i got confused in the comments i read,so here is my experience:

First of all, remove all gear. Even naked, you have a chance to kill the boss with normal hit in one-shot (it happened to me 2 times). Secondly, clear all the trash nearby the boss, to avoid "confusion" and mistakes.
Once everything is cleared, start moving nearby the boss until he starts the combat.
Stage 1: the boss will summon a fire phoenix, that phoenix will drop fire patches on the ground, once you got 3-4 patches, hit the boss (with normal hits, not skills because you can one-shot him) to lower him bellow 50% HP to enter stage 2.
Stage 2: the boss will summon a 黑暗先驱 , a "dark-purple phoenix" that will cast 灵魂撕裂 on you, which will summon a "spirit clone" of yourself. This clone is called 灵魂残片 and will target you and move slowly towards you. Now, what you need to do is to direct the 灵魂残片 towards the fire patches on the ground. When the 灵魂残片 will be on fire, he will get a short duration debuff and it will turn into a Burning Soul. When it is turned into Burning Soul, use a instant cast spell to kill it fast, because after a few seconds (5 sec i think), the Soul will disappear.
Repeat it until you kill 3 Burning Souls and voila...you got the achievement.

P.S. : i did it with my 120 shaman. Once the the 灵魂残片 was up, i was targeting it and waiting to turn into a Burning Soul and instantly killing him with Flame Shock once the turned.

I just did this on a level 120 fire mage. It was actually much easier than when I attempted it on my 120 assassination rogue and failed, here's how I did it:

First off remove all of your clothes. I keep a default equipment set that contails all my gear pre-naked, and then another set called "naked" where all my equips are off.
Engage the fight by standing near/on the boss.
Hit F1 so that you're targeting yourself. Kite the boss to the top stairs, and just stand there. Don't do anything or attack anything
Let the boss summon his "phoenix" (Ashes of Alar looking bird). Still stand and don't do anything yet.
Let the phoenix drop those fire balls onto the ground, cluster them all in the same spot.
Once a few have dropped from the phoenix, re-engage the boss and hit him with one and only one scorch. This should get him down to 50-ish percent to start stage 2.
Hit F1 again to re-target yourself
A purple phoenix pops up and summons mirror images of you called soul fragments. Target the fragment as soon as it pops up, don't wait. Try to kite the fragment in a straight line through the fire and towards you, so stand behind the previously dropped fire.
As soon as the soul fragment walks into the fire, it turns into a burning soul. Hit a Fire blast IMMEDIATELY
You need to do this 2 more times in order to get the achievement. The achievement actually dings before you finish the boss, so you will definitely know when you get it and if you havent.
Note that the fragments sometimes merge with the harbinger, and there's nothing you can do there except wait for another soul fragment to pop up.
Soul fragments will pop up for as long as the harbinger/purple bird is *NOT DEAD* so do not target the harbinger until the achievement pops

I hope this helps people. Just remember to be patient and set yourself up so that the soul fragments walk into the fire to become burning souls and remember, you don't have to move on to the next stage of the fight until the achievement dings, so that bird will poop out soul fragments as long as you still haven't gotten it.

first get naked, test your meele dmg on nearby mobs to see how hard u hit so u dont one-shot the boss.

Once that's out of the way, pull the boss, wait until the boss puts FIRE ON THE GROUND. After that, simple get the boss down to 50%. Right away, a purple phoenix will summon a bunch of shadowy copies of yourself.
Move those 3 shadowy copies to the fire and kill them immediately.

Then kill the boss and you are set
