another good place to level your unarmed (or any weapon skill for that matter) are the Infernal spawns outside your respective settlement in Shadowmoon Valley. The groups of three guards pick up and (generally) hold the threat from the Infernals, and you can just go in bare-fisted and grind away. They spawn so fast and there's always one around that the most downtime you have is the 4 second run to the nearest Infernal. And since I *believe* the levels are based on number of swings and NOT damage done, you can do this at any time.

Qmccumber
Or you can try the corrupted shaman mobs in Shadowmoon as well. As long as you don't break their totems so that their shield goes down, they won't attack you.

Gordok Spirits
are great for safely skilling up any weapons, if you can get to the king's room in Dire Maul North.
They will not attack you.
They will not become immune to attacks.
They will not die.
They will keep you in combat, preventing log-outs if you go AFK.
There are no (wandering) enemies in agro range, once you get to them.
There's no risk of random world PvP coming your way.
They still give skill-ups as of 3.0.8, unlike banished mobs.
Basically, they're training dummies that grant skill-ups.

The best way to level any weapon skill is to attack the guys in Shadowmoon Valley that are bound by the totems. The best one to work on is the one by the altar of shadows. There are two air elementals that will pop near him from time to time, but easily killed off then it's back to wailing on an immune target. It works great

Grimtotem Shaman's in Feralas proved to be the best place for me. I just picked up some gray weapons from low level zones, and headed out to 68, 46 in Feralas. Low chance of getting ganked, and these mobs heal themselves, with enough hp that at higher weapon levels you dont ever actually kill them. With lifeblood, I was able to stay in combat for almost 45 minutes straight as a clothie mage. Also, there is a shaman by himself on the far east end of the camp that you can pull all by himself and just afk it. cheers!
p.s.- i just left my gear on becuase gold wasnt a really an issue and it gives lots of intel. Pick some up before you head out there and grind it off, beacue intel really really helps the grind.

The banished demon Azaloth on the second highest tier of the Ruins of Karabor just outside Black Temple is a great spot. Almost nobody is going to need the quest nowadays, and since the mobs are level 70... at 80, they won't attack you for being in their proximity. Wail on the demon all you want and the skill keeps going up. He is immune to attacks. (Especially easy access with a Blessed Medallion of Karabor)
Remember, to break out of combat quickly... just kill the channelers (Sunfury Warlocks) keeping him banished and take out the big lug himself. He has 27945 health. - Enjoy

For easy level up in Stormpeak Northrend.
Little west of the K3 flightpoint at 38,86 you find Dim Flathoof. Lure a Gnoll towards him. Dim then shooshes the Gnoll away. After that you will still be in combat with the gnoll, but he wont hit back. You will still skill up.
398 and 399 took about 1 and 3 minutes. Last point 23. But that might have to do with the fact that I was level 80 and the Gnoll 77.

I don't think I have ever gotten angrier with Blizzard than I have trying to level this skill and get the Achievement. It has been well over 400 hits without the last point from 399 to 400. Don't know if it's bugged or if the last skill point needs to be from a mob close to my level but I was killing Boulderfist Ogres in Nagrand for way too long. I'm level 80. This defeats the purpose of the achievement system when they are such a time sink as this. Dire Maul worked for me. Do not grind this out the normal way. Find a shortcut. Goes for this also

If you are an achievement crazed nutter like me, you are probably doing all the lowbie level quests, for various reasons.
While doing these quests, it doesn't matter if you have an epic equipped or if you are going barefisted, the effect is the same; you one shot most everything.
As such, get out there and quest and explore, and make sure you are bare handed the whole time.
You will hit 400 before you run out of quests.

I farmed the Grove Walkers just outside of Dalaran. They have 12k HP, way more than most mobs around, hit like total pansies, and they heal themselves. As a shaman I just dropped healing stream and every couple minutes throw a heal. This is the best mob I've found to use for this. By the way, 399-400 does take a really long time, but I got there eventually on the same Grove Walker that levelled me to 399.

Got this yesterday, just felt like putting up a bit of advice.
If you're a class with healing spells like a shammy or a druid, then the easy thing to do if you've hit 80 is just find a random mob about 8 levels below you, pot a HOT on you, and punch away. Just thought i'd put in the 8 or so levels below thing because it takes about 10 minutes to get 397 to 400, just good to kill something that might be slightly worth looting.

There are three good options for autoattack and walk away. All the mobs are invunerable, don't hit back, and are easy to skill up on.
#1 -
Gordok Spirit
in
Dire Maul
#2 -
Rothin the Decaying
in Dragonblight
#3 -
Azaloth
in Shadowmoon Valley
#1 Was a pain to get to in an area that I don't ever visit any more. If you want complete desertion, this is where you can go, but it's distance away from everything and the fact you have to navigate through an instance make it the least desirable of the three.
#2 Rothin is the best located to your day to day activities in Northrend. So great to pop over while you are waiting on other things going on. The only downside is you have to navigate through a cave, and since this is an active quest for a bunch of folks, you will get cross faction and quest hunters disturbing you. Not the best option if you are looking to auto attack and go AFK.
#3 Azaloth is my personal favorite for skilling. You can fly directly to him, it's reasonably close to Shattrath so porting in and out is painless. Fly over to him, drop directly down on him (you won't aggro his warlock keepers at 80), and go to town. Remember to unequip your armor before you start pounding on him, as dropping aggro is somewhat of a pain (run a good distance away or log). Also SMV is pretty deserted nowadays, so you're unlikely to run into any other players.

went unarmed, and with fel armor, killed nearby mobs and went fisticuffs on my choosen biotch. I killed the first one.. and found another. they don't hit very hard, and my fel armor kept me at full health. after this i decided to finish out wands, staves, and daggers for the achivement master of arms.
took about 30 mins of pounding at 399 but finally hit 400 in unarmed.
wands took considerably less time used it exclusively on the mobs running up the stairs, but then end of the battle, i hit 400.
daggers took somewhere in between. using a junk dagger i picked up -- grey item does like 20 damage.
staves i was at 399 for a while to begin with so couldn't really tell.
remember to move or jump everyone once in a while to avoid the AFK.

Easily the best place to get this achievement is in Wintergrasp. Kite an elemental near a graveyard until you get the
Spiritual Immunity
buff.
This is the ultimate afk spot because absolutely
nothing
can kill you.
If you are a pet class (Hunter, Warlock, Mage with
permanent Water Elemental
, and
Unholy DKs
), you can send your pet in to aggro one of the elementals then pull them back up onto the platform where the Spirit Healer is.
Here's a few spots (thanks
convulse for the coords
for the Alliance spot)
Horde:
20.85, 35.16
Alliance or Horde*:
68.7, 30.3
* This spot depends on who is controlling WG at that time.
Tested and verified working in 3.3.5
. Here's
a pic
PLUS you can get honor if your side gets Wintergrasp.
As of patch 3.2.0. you now get ported out of WG if you aren't selected to be in the battle once it starts.

Another option for those that don't want to dedicate a ton of time to this and only pursue it casually at 80 is the mobs inside of Violet Hold. If you live in Dalaran like most of us you can hop in, punch a few things while you chat with friends and guildies; you never have to leave "home".
Also, for squishy classes the NPCs in there will tank stuff for you, if you can handle their damage output you can run toward the middle of the room and fight them slowly without too much interference from the friendly NPCs. If you get overwhelmed you can always run to the NPCs for help.

The North Fleet Reservists do not fight back, are fairly accessible for any Horde members with a flying mount, and are level 69.
Downsides are that they only have 7400 health, and don't heal themselves, so you will have to switch out or drop combat every so often.
The reservists are friendly to Alliance Players.

I finished this on my priest earlier, simply by meleeing mobs (unarmed) while working through starting-zone quests for Loremaster; it probably took a little longer than doing it with high-level mobs would have, but I got quests done, so for me it was a good system, and a better use of my time.

Update: I had to finish up some dailies so I set it off, but I'm going to leave myself autoattacking when I head for bed. Can't imagine I won't level within 7 hours. Just letting people know, this could take a while, so find something else to do if you do not have any way to speed up your melee.

Patch 3.0.8 severely reduced the amount of time required to level up weapon skill.
Getting to 399/400 is a joke. The last point which would take an eternity before only took around 5 minutes, and I'm being generous.
I did this at Sunwell Isle at the Dead Scar. There are undead mobs that have around 6k health and that hit for very low damage. You can go semi-afk while you do this. Remember to check back every once in a while to top off your health. Enjoy!

As of February 7th, I can confirm that the Gordok Spirits in Dire Maul STILL give skill ups.
More importantly, I can also confirm that intellect DOES still appear to affect weapon skill ups. In my feral gear it is taking about 10 swings of my 2h mace to get a skill up. In my casting gear it is 3-5. I have switched back and forth using Shadowmeld to get out of combat and it is consistent each time.
edit: If you're using white weapons to skill up, make sure you bring ones that have more than 18 durability. My white dagger started with 18/18 and was 0/18 before I got to 400 (somewhere around 360, I wasn't paying attention).

I've found two great ways to level your skill:
1) If you are in a lvl 80 dungeon or a heroic, your unarmed goes up considerably when fighting bosses without a weapon. While I wouldn't recommend this, I found it out unintentionally in Heroic Naxx when we were fighting Meathook without realizing my weapons were red beforehand. -_- My unarmed went from about 150-200 up to 350 that battle alone.
2) If you are level 80 (and I assume you are if you are bored enough to try for this achievement) go to Crystalsong. The
Grove Walkers
there are great. They are neutral so you don't have to worry about aggroeing others, they don't hit hard at all and they also heal themselves so you pretty much have an endless punching bag. I usually limited myself to a certain HP that if I got down to it I would vanish, or sprint away till I lost aggro. They are exceptionally slow and super easy to lose. Use your own class' methods to lose aggro and escape. Then just HP up, and go back and dps the same mob again and again till you are 400 skill.
Be careful though, if a large neutral
Ancient Watcher
walks past you while you are hitting a grove walker, he will attack. Those guys are level 80+.
Happy achievement hunting!

I just went from 10 unarmed skill to 400 in about 25 minutes on my Warlock. Not only did I finish the achievement in 25 minutes, it only took me 2 mobs to do so.
The best way I found to do this was off a mob in Crystalsong Forest named Dispirited Ent. I am specced Affliction and am well geared. I unequipped my weapon, used Siphon Life to keep myself up, and went to town. When the mob gets under 50% or so life, it throws a hot up on itself which heals for a decent amount. Since the most damage you're doing as a warlock, even at 375+ unarmed, is 5-10, it takes an eternity for the mob to run out of mana. If it starts to get too low, don't Siphon Life as much. The first tree took me from 10-395 skill. The second from 395-400 skill.

Me being level 80, i just ran in there, unequipped Death's Bite, and hit him up nicely.
He will drop to 1hp, and not go ANY further down, but he hits back.

As a fury warrior, since I get actual weapon skill level ups while questing (and have all 3 of 2H axes/maces/swords available to get the 4 skill achievement, including unarmed), getting my unarmed skill up is a concern of mine. While I was lower level, I didn't bother to try and concentrate on my unarmed skill, but still had around 150-200 or so, just from being disarmed by enemies. Fighting Omen got me to the mid-to-late-200s since my gear completely broke during that fight.
Once I hit high levels, I started to think about getting my unarmed up, but knew that I'd too easily kill low level creatures. Instead, a good way I've found to get several things accomplished simultaneously, is to have fist weapons equipped while doing low-level dungeons. I can carry lower-level guildmates through, I can get the achievement if its a dungeon I haven't yet done, and I can get unarmed skill-ups all together. And any loot gotten is purely for vendor/AH/low-level alts.

By far the easiest way to level any kind of weapon skill is to enter
Violet Hold normal
alone, and attack the mobs in there. If you are in danger, heal, bandage, run out of the instance, let the guards handle the mobs. If you are carefull you can pull only one fo the summoned four. One of those mobs hits around 200 on plate (20k armor), which isn't very high, I think even cloth wearers might give this method a try.

Grark Lorkrub
is a level 56 elite in the Burning Steppes who will submit and reset instead of die.
This makes him perfect for weapon training of all kinds. If you're running low on HP just pull him a yard or two from his position and the next time he submits you can just sit down and eat.

Just completed this achievement on v3.1.1.9835 and OMG it took a long time! I estimate I spent about 2 and a half to three hours beating things to get this. Good luck and persevere!
--edit--
Just to say I tried hitting all sorts of things, elites, primordial eggs but nothing made much difference.

in 3.1, still working on it, Blood dk, using rune tap to stay up and going afk for about fifteen, then rune tapping again, doing the grove walkers in crystalsong forest. 350-399 approx 1 hr, 399 to 400- still going, been hours. Does it really have to be this time consuming blizz? its apointless achievemnet for anyone not using fist weapons. It should be an easy fun achievement like most of the other ones in game. Its not like u get anything for it, its not part of a meta... except maybe master of arms it could be considered...either way, 399-400 is like taking a screwdriver to your brain if you try to just sit there and watch. and for all the clothies going for this, that aren't self healing warlocks, i'm sorry...

Easy for paladins.
In a cave in Blasted Lands (66.7, 29.3) is a level 58 elite named Archmage Allistarj. He wont die unless you are on the quest to kill him. He will remain at 1 HP. He hits back, but if you are a paladin, just use Seal of Light and you will heal yourself with each melee hit for more than he deals. You only have to check in on your progress every half hour to reapply your seal.

This was so easy. 250-400 took about 30 minutes. 399-400 was 15 minutes which was 4 clefthoofs in Nagrand. Having intellect really does help, 687 intellect (14.7k mana) is what I had without my shield and main hand. Looks like some of the people commenting here put in a lot more time.
Get as much intellect gear/buffs as you can...lower melee stats if you can. Go out and pick your favorite Outlands mob. I missed beating clefthoofs so they had to die. Drop your Windfury totem and Healing Stream totem and watch some youtube. Refresh totems every 5 minutes and in less than an hour you'll be done.
I'm working on
Master of Arms
now. Axe and maces are done. Unarmed skill counts towards this achievement....on to Staves!

Nice easy way to get this is:
1) Go searing gorge and do the quests (From Kalaran Windblade 39,39) for this item:
http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=3454
2) Go to K3 in Storm Peaks. Just outside K3 is a crash site you will find these mobs:
http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=29404
3) Pull one, and make sure you hit it unarmed - YOU MUST DEAL DAMAGE.
4) Near by there is a friendly NPC walking around the crash site named Dim Flathoof -
http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=29642
5) Pull the mob to him, Dim will fear the mob, and after the fear expires, the mob will be bugged. You can still hit it, but it will not hit you.
6) Equip your Torch of Retribution and start attacking. It will say "Immune" when you hit the mob, but it will still count towards your unarmed skill. Sit back and enjoy.

I leveled mine to 400 attacking Grol the Destroyer in Blasted Lands. He doesn't die and does little damage if you're 80 so if you can heal yourself you will do fine. It's inside a little hut so no one can see.

Please correct me if I'm wrong:
Currently, the only way to level unarmed weapon skill while AFK is to obtain the
Torch of Retribution
. To get the
Torch of Retribution
you must complete a short quest chain in Searing Gorge.
All of these quests start and end with
Kalaran Windblade
(39,38). The earliest level that the chain can be completed at is level 40. However, the quests are geared towards players around level 48.
1.
The Flawless Flame
2.
Forging the Shaft
3.
The Flame's Casing
4.
The Torch of Retribution
5.
The Torch of Retribution
1. The Flawless Flame
Collect
Heart of Flame
(4) and
Golem Oil
(4). These drop off of golems and elementals around The Cauldron area.
Magma Elementals
drop both quest items so you may want to exclusively kill those.
2. Forging the Shaft
Collect
Thorium Plated Dagger
(8). These items drop off of all the
Dark Iron NPCs
in and around The Cauldron as well as the
Slave Workers
.
3. The Flame's Casing
Obtain a
Symbol of Ragnaros
(1). This item has roughly at 5% drop rate off of all the
Twilight's Hammer NPCs
which can be found at the
Twilight's Hammer Camp
in the northwest.
4. The Torch of Retribution
Simply wait for
Kalaran Windblade
to finish creating the Torch.
5. The Torch of Retribution
Pick up the
Torch of Retribution
. It is floating in the pillar of green light in front of Kalaran Windblade.
Time to level up the skill!
You can now equip this item and attack a critter that fights back (a
Sewer Frog
in Dalaran for example) and go AFK while you level up your unarmed weapon skill and defense skill. Make sure you take off your gear because you will suffer durability losses from fighting.

Wintergrasp is amazing for this achievement. as a lock i Hellfire my way to death and when i res i send my void to one of those elementals around, and once the mob is on the graveyard i start hitting him and then i go watch a movie or something, as i am immune to any damage while i'm still in the graveyard.
just remember to take off your gear that has durability as it's gonna take a long time to level and as long as you're in combat you will lose durability

As a prot paladin, I was able to AFK-tank the
Fel Reaver Sentry

Ambassador Hellmaw in Shadow Labs no longer gives weapon skills, however, the mobs outside the instance do. Just make sure to tag one if its wailing on the Lower City Operatives inside the instance portal to bring them out to you.

Kite Varedis to Shat, make sure he's immune when he gets there- Announce in trade he's there- over the course of two hours (Approximately the time it takes to get into an instance now-a-days) You can level your weapon skills up, not have to worry about dropping (Healers will heal because its funny) about holding aggro (Most of the time Tanks test their skills on holding him) or DPS meter (He can't be hit.)
Make
Varedis

At level 80, one of the easiest places to get this is in Halaa (If your faction doesn't control it). The guards won't really do much damage to you at level 80, and they have quite a bit of health so you can attack them for a long time xD If you need to heal, you can just run across the bridge so you're out of combat =P

I would like to mention another place to get this: Violet Hold.
Enter VH solo and don't start the encounter, just attack the mobs that are fighting the VH defender NPCs. There's a constant supply of them, so you'll have plenty to attack. Self-healing classes should have no problem staying alive, and for those who can't self-heal, it's not too hard to get out of combat so you can back off and eat/drink. Just stop attacking and let the defender NPCs get aggro. If you get in a pinch, well, the exit is right behind you so you can duck out.
I did 1h swords from 390 to 400 in about 10-15 minutes, and unarmed from 390 to 400 in about an hour.
The only downside is that it does require more active participation on your part, because the mobs do die, whether from you or from the defender NPCs, so you have to keep acquiring new targets. But it seems like the old "engage and walk away for an hour or two" methods have all been "fixed" by now. The advantage is an uninterrupted endless supply of mobs, and a quick exit in case of emergency.

Ahoy hoy fellow Achievement addicts!
So since blizzard cracked down on the whole
Rothin The Decaying
scam, i needed to figure out a good enemy to wail on to level up this skill and my weapon skills. I seem to have found a pretty good one for anyone who can stay alive as long as they are only attacking one thing at a time. The
Cultist Corrupter
's at Sindragosa's Fall in Icecrown are very handy as they throw up a Bone Shield that absorbs damage when you hit. I fought one for 10 minutes before he died. Another perk is that they don't "Run away in fear" so you can slam them till they are down. As a prot pally all i did was throw on seal of light, blessing of sanctuary, and refresh Sacred Shield every 60 seconds and i was in buisness. Good luck!
**UPDATE** i got er! Took me 45 minutes to get from 399-400 using the technique I mentioned Above.

Horrified Drakkari Shaman (lv 73)

These trolls come in waves at the bottom of Drak'Tharon Keep and can keep you occupied with a steady stream of mobs to whack on. Also, they hit pretty low at roughly 130-190dmg per swing.
Hope that helps :)

Thought I would add something I did as a frost mage, hope this helps someone:
Grab yourself a
Glyph of Evocation
and head down right below Dalaran in the Crystalsong Forest.
Any mob will do but I used
Unbound Seer
. Throw up Ice Barrier, and beginning your hitting. By the time your ice barrier is gone, you should be able to use it again. If you take any extra damage, or the mob your attacking is about to die, simply Polymorph the mob (this regens all their health), and use evocation (with the glyph, you will regen 60% of your health).
When you're done, simply engage the mob once more and repeat!

Wow..first post here..a lil more to the fire
Like some other people,i did just out of boredom and because i was rep grinding with gnomeregan exiles (ughh),and i said to myself...why dont i do this ach?...well,i have a few insides on this matter
*Beign a 80, i went rep. grinding in Dun Morogh, doing all the low lvl quests with an unarmed skill of 125.
*One quest needs (sorry, dont remember the quest) you to kill some trolls,in the trolls camp, theres a cave..with lots of trolls..i just disarmed myself and begun the hunt...it took me 4 or 5 hits to kill one troll (clothie...no strenght on limbs)..so by the time i got out of the cave, and killing roughly 30-40 trolls went from 125 to 380 unarmed skill...in about half an hour.
*Once u reach 395 skill points, the hits u need to land are more for the points to go up,so instead of going one point up per hit,u need to land 6..and in 397 u need to land 15....398 are 25..399 is 50...and the last point is roughly 100 hits before the point. Take this in consideration when u do the ach, because most of the replies i saw are from people that go afk and watch a movie or something..i did this moving around, and the time i took for the 125-400 skill points was about 2 and half hours..the last point took me 30 minutes or so.
So u see...its not a hard quest,u just need to move around and kill low level mobs (mobs i killed were lvl 9-10)..and the last point does take a lot of time to go up...but if u move and kill,it shouldnt be that to much of time...one friend spent 5 hours trying to get the point left with the iron dwarves in storm peaks
Just a lil something that i throw in here...could be wrong about the number of hits, but its a fact that after skill point 395,u need to land more hits for the points to go up.
as a side note.....great job by everybody here, this page is a lifesaver to everybody playing WOW!.

Easy way to get the unarmed achievement (
Did Somebody Order a Knuckle Sandwich?
) for an Arcane Mage is to go to
Violet Hold
. Not sure if it affects these mobs but just in case make sure it's on normal difficulty.
Go down the stairs into a corner and wait for one of the dogs,
Azure Mage Slayer
, to run by. Grab it and pull it to the corner. You can't really AFK this way, but going from 1-400 unarmed took me around 20 minutes. My method was just to keep
Mana Shield
up and
Spellsteal
the haste buff (
Arcane Empowerment
) every time he cast it. It gives 50% melee haste, lasts 10 seconds and is recast every 20 seconds.. so about half the time you will be hasted 50% for around 25% total effective haste. If you have decent haste gear already you should be around 75% haste during this period, making your attacks really fast.
Use
Mana Sapphire
, and when your last charge is gone use a
Presence of Mind
to instantly recast a new one (does not work just to refresh charges). If you are a Blood Elf use
Arcane Torrent
every chance possible and lastly, when you are at 50% mana or below wait for the last second of the haste buff and before it fades start casting
Evocation
. The buff gives 50% casting haste as well, so my Evocations were casting in under 4 seconds.
Between all these mana regaining abilities you should be able to fight one dog for easily 10 minutes or more.. and if really careful you may be able to fight the same single dog for the entire trip from 1 to 400.

As a mage I was in swamp of sorrows and thought it would be cool to punch a crocodile to death. It took awhile but when I was done I was already at 300 so I decided to just finish the achievement. If you decide to do this I recommended you go to SoS and fight the Tangled Horrors. They don't do much damage to you at 80, and once you get them down to about 50% health they cast a Rejuvenation spell and get back to full health. As long as you check back every 15-20 minutes to heal (as a cloth wearer at least) it's super easy and you don't have to sit at the computer. Good Luck.

I actually leveled up every weapon skill to 400 this way. When you get to about 375, you can just put up Seal of Light and afk and you won't die. Unarmed didn't start hitting semi-reliably until about 380.

took me around 35min 1-399.
there is also a crap load of risen soldiers there and they have a very fast respawn so you will never run out!

It has been stated that the Weapon Skill statistic will be removed in the upcoming Cataclysm expansion pack. Here is a quote posted by Eyonix, a Blizzard Poster on 03/01/2010.
Weapon Skill - This stat will be removed from the game completely. Classes will start with all the weapon skills they need to know and will not need to improve them.
Feel free to read the rest of the thread

That does mean that this achievement will be removed though in Cataclysm, as with the

For caster classes (or any really) I found an easy way to do this.
Head to Searing Gorge if you have not yet completed the quests line from
Kalaran Windblade
. You will get to a quest called
Set Them Ablaze!
in which you are given a
torch
to burn down 4 watchtowers. This torch is actually an equipable two handed weapon. For whatever reason when you melee a mob it counts as unarmed (prob because not every class have some 2H skill but all have unarmed) and the
Dark Iron Steamsmiths
in the area are immune to its effects (cause its fire damage maybe?).
I fired up Ice Barrier and autoattacked until I got to 400 easy. Last 10 points were a drag. LIke everyone above stated, 399-400 took impossibly long... maybe 20 minutes?
Oh mages dont forget to take off molten armor. =)

Stairs of Destiny (The dark portal) In hellfire is an excelent place to level weapon skills if you're high level.
First off, its sanctury so you cannot get ganked
Second, there is a constant stream of mobs attacking
Third, the NPC's in the area tank all the mobs provided you don't steal aggro, and if you have lowbie weapons and no armor you wont pull aggro and your mob will stay alive for ages. Aditionaly, since you dont have agro you can fall behind friendly lines and bandage if you need to (infernals do have a damage aura)
And lastly, you're right on top of the GY so if you somehow die your right back in the action immediately

For all you fellow priests out there, go to Crystalsong Forest, directly below Dalaran and start meleeing those Grove Walkers. They put up a rejuv which you really can't outdamage, but they put up thorns which can be outhealed by a renew every min or so. So essentially you can stay in constant combat while leveling off of one mob. I leveled daggers from 396, maces from 398, and unarmed from 126 all to 400 in about 30 mins.

Best way to do achievement, in my opinion:
Get a low-level fist weapon if you can wear it.(Optional)
Go to Moonglade.
Find
Phantasmal Lash
that spawns at the entrance to the Stormrage Barrow Den's.
Create a macro:
/tar Phan
/cast Auto Attack
Bind this to an easy key.
Take all the gear off, except shirt, tabard and your fist weapon.
Keep pressing this macro once a 20-30 sec. It doesn't switch auto attack off if you're in combat, so you don't worry about matching press and mob spawn.
Repeat this untill you've got 400 skill.
?
PROFIT!
Note: You can somehow automate button press and go afk. But be sure you've got loud wisper sound so you won't miss a GM wisper ;) I didn't choose this way, because I prefer fair game and promised myself to do all the progress without cheating, but you're free to try. Good luck.

Some brilliant person here said he just went under Dal and punched undead seers for a bit. Perfect.
As a hunter I went under Dal and punched them, stags, trees and wolves until I dinged. Put the pet on passive, take away your melee weapon, and when your right on top of them brother, start slapping.
Eventually slapping becomes punching and punching becomes smashing and smashing becomes mauling and then you ding. Beautiful.

I did this from around 170 to 400 in one sitting... Method? As a frost mage (PvP off spec) I strapped on the gear and read the news and kept Ice Barrier on the whole time.. Just keep wow in the background so you can see the buff and when is disappears, click it back on and continue on.. I had to pop a potion and a bandage, but mostly because I stopped paying attention... Did it on various creatures in Crystalsong Forest.
Anything with a heal, bubble, or a lot of health regen, and this is just a "how long can I stare at the screen"....

Jun'do the Traitor is currently bugging out (going immune) on most servers during the
Zalazane's Fall
line. Used this to level my skills.

Reanimated Crusaders are excellent for skilling this up. They can be found just the other side of The Breach between The Argent Vanguard. They hae 12k hp and a very strong heal and lots of armor so they take little damage.

Or if u don`t wanna go to Dire Maul, u can go Dalaran - Shattrath - Isle of Quel'Danas and start hitting a blood elf there :P works for me (just for the unarmed skill, didn`t have too many weapons at me).
Had to do 1-2 heals but it worked from 50-400 in ~10 minutes.

Those it's not as easy to AFK at, Violet Hold offers a reasonable alternative thanks to the endless spawns of waves.
Tip for Paladins: Equip Seal of Light and Sacred Shield, should never die then.

Though this is being removed, if you're still interested in the achievement you can also fight
Overlord Mok'Morokk
. If you one shot him his HP goes to 1 but he doesn't run away. He keeps fighting and doesn't die but you will still get skill up points for it.

As a hunter I went to Corprethar in Icecrown, and levelled Unarmed on a
Skeletal Reaver
. Used my pet (any will do) to keep aggro, and I just punched away and used mend pet when I needed to.

Although not an "afk" method of leveling up your weapon skills, I have found the best way to level them up is to help out random people with their jousting at the argent tournament grounds. Wait until someone taps something for their jousting daily, then wail away. If the player is a bad jouster, the npc will have 3 stacks of defend most of the time and your attacks won't do much damage.
The real kick is that they still give weapon skill ups and you will never have aggro. And the other player will /thank you too!

So, will this be getting made into a feat of strength in the next patch, 4.0.1? And is it due tomorrow?

The easiest way to do this is to beat on Grol the Destroyer in Blasted Lands. I leveled 3 weapon skills from under 100 to 400 in less than an hour.
Added bonus for mages: when beating on Grol, make sure to aggro an ogre mage nearby. The reason for this is that even when they run out of mana, they cast Bloodlust on Grol which can be spellstolen, giving you a 30% increased attack speed. They cast this so often then it never falls off. Keep up an ice barrier and spellsteal every so often while autoattacking and you will level your weapon skills quite quickly. Don't have molten armor on as this will kill the mage as he beats on you.
one more thing. if you aggro two mages, you can spellsteal 2 bloodlusts and they stack :D

Since you can no longer train up weapon skills (including unarmed combat)... This has been converted into a feat of strength to those who already did it. Those who never made this one will not be able to get it anymore.

I missed when they announced they would remove weapon skills, and I logged out yesterday with 399/400 skill in unarmed. Good game to me. :(

this is now a feat of strength and is unobtainable unless you had it before 4.01

I am so mad that I couldn't get this achievement before Cataclysm. I wasted hours trying to get this up to 400. I only made it to 350. I wish they had left weapon skills in.

I just got this achieve and I have no idea how - I was riding the boat from Darnassus to Azuremist Isle; some weird things happened with the visual; I was disconnected from the server, logged back in, got off the boat on Azuremist, and it announced that I had gotten the achieve ?

If you're interested to know how many out of 400 you got type
/script AddTrackedAchievement(16)
into your chat bar and your progress will appear in your achievement/quest tracker.
So all you people disputing that you remember getting it, well, now you can prove it. Or face the harsh reality that you missed out.
350/400 here. Sad times.

Impossible to earn now... Weapon skills were annoying but I wish they reduced their effect on your dps and kept them for effect. Or at least this one.
