I wanted to see of using Hawk Eye would increase my damage output significantly enough to account for the loss of an attack on the turn that I use it. Here are some assumptions that I make:
Damage is being calculated as averages. It is certainly possible to have a higher than normal steak of attacks.
Crits deal 1.5x Damage
Abilities have a 5% chance to Crit before Hawk Eye is applied
.
In order for it to be worth using this ability in place of an attack, the damage dealt before the buff expires must be greater than the damage that would have been dealt had I attacked as normal instead of using Hawk Eye.
For the purposes of this calculation, I will be using my Rare
Hyacinth Macaw
(Level 11, 107 Power).
Slicing Winds
deals
63
damage per attack, and can hit 1 to 3 times. A crit will deal
94.5
damage.
Average damage on 1 attack will be
64.575
.
Average damage on 2 attacks will be
129.15
.
Average damage on 3 attacks will be
193.725
.
Average number attacks will be 2, so average un-buffed damage of Slicing Winds is
129.15
. Using Slicing Winds for 5 rounds (assuming the enemy does not avoid your attacks) will deal an average of
645.75
damage.
Now if the crit chance is 30% instead of 5%, we get the following:
Average damage on 1 attack will be
72.42
.
Average damage on 2 attacks will be
144.9
.
Average damage on 3 attacks will be
217.35
.
Average number attacks will be 2, so average buffed damage of Slicing Winds is
144.9
. Using Hawk Eye followed by Slicing Winds for 4 rounds (assuming the enemy does not avoid your attacks will deal an average of
579.6
damage, which is still 66.15 less that the un-buffed Slicing Winds.
Now let's compare for
Thrash
. Thrash deals 2-3 attacks if the pet is faster than the enemy, at the same damage as Slicing Winds. The damage type is different, but for the sake of example we'll assume that target is neither weak nor resistant to it. If you manage to stay faster than the opponent for the entire fight, you deal 2.5 attacks per round. Un-buffed, Thrash will deal an average of
158.6775
damage per round. Over 5 rounds, that's
793.3875
damage.
Now let's look at Thrash with a 30% crit chance. Buffed Thrash deals an average of
164.565
per round. Using Hawk Eye followed by 4 rounds of Thrash will deal an average of
658.26
damage, which still falls short by 135.1275 of just using Thrash 5 times.
Okay let's take a look just for the heck of it at
Lift Off
. Lift off deals
222
on the second round it is used. It has a 20% chance to miss. Accounting for its miss chance and its chance to crit without Hawk Eye, it's average damage is
182.04
Using Lift Off followed by 3 Thrashes (assuming we attack first). The expected damage for that should be
658.0725
. This is lower than just doing 5 thrashes, but remember your pet is unattackable for one of those rounds.
Now let's look at Hawk Eye + Lift Off+ 2 Thrashes. Lift Off's average damage is now up to
204.24
, bringing the total to
533.7
, which is 124.7025 less than Hawk Eye + 3 Thrashes.
Conclusion: unless you're hoping to get lucky with crits, Hawk Eye will on average cost you damage instead of gaining it for you. Use this ability only when you know dealing damage is pointless (such as when the enemy is unattackable, or when the enemy is an undead pet that has already been killed and is simply lingering around for 1 final turn).
