Just the other day I was wondering if these Pandaria books were original or WoW-ified versions of ancient stories. This one, I remember from elsewhere, so I guess now I know at least some are based off old stories.
I'd forgotten the twist until reading it though! Love these Pandaren Aesops.

These books are so awesome and probably 99% of players will never even notice them!
P.S. I think the answer to the monk's first question is that you get one container large enough to fit the irregularly shaped object and fill it with water. Sit it on top of a bowl big enough to catch any spillover, then dunk the irregularly shaped object into the water. You can then measure the volume of water the object displaced.
Vitruvius'
De architectura
(~15BC) relates a famous story about this concept. Hiero II of Syracuse (at some time during his reign 270-215BC) had a goldsmith create a gold crown for him to donate to a temple. But he suspected the goldsmith was cheating him by alloying the gold with cheaper metals, so he asked Archimedes to figure out a way to tell if the crown was pure gold.
Now Archimedes knew that if the gold was alloyed with another metal that would change the density (ie, mass/volume) of the crown, and it was easy enough to measure the mass of the crown with scales but the crown was a weird shape so how could he accurately measure the volume? He was sitting in the bath pondering the problem when he noticed that he'd caused water to spill over the sides. So he suddenly realised how to use fluid displacement to measure volume, and was so excited he leapt out of the bath and ran through the streets of Syracuse still naked and wet, yelling "Eureka!" (I've found it).
