If you are having troubles with this boss, you can hide behind the pillar during Quills to take no damage from it.

The following tactics work greatly for challenge mode (and also for heroic mode):
- before you pull the boss, have the healer and range dps stand in between the piles of ash (so you have at least 5 yards distance to every pile). Tank and melee dps will find a place near the boss without being to close to any pile of ash
- by doing so no solar flare will spawn until the very first quills (at least for us)
- run behind the pillar to prevent quill damage
- two to three seconds before quills are over, run to your old position using a defensive cooldown
- boss should be around ~50-60% now
- starting now, solar flares will start to spawn (we could not prevent this, maybe it's possible)
- kite the adds (killing them will put pressure on the healer and is not necessary)
- when second quills start, you should have two adds up and the boss will be around 10-20%
- run behind the pillar to prevent quill damage and be aware of the adds
- when quills are over, still kite the adds and finish the boss after the second quills is over

A quick word on CM as a Guardian Druid - You need to use "active mitigation" to avoid taking the Pierced Armour debuff (and at 50% increase in CM you
need
to avoid that) and for Druids that means Savage Defense.
This is pretty frustrating as I feel like the mechanic is intended to force tanks to be better and use their active mitigation effects but it actually forces you to be worse, pooling resources to use the active mitigation effects on cue rather than as the ebb and flow of combat actually dictates.
Essentially though, I got it to work by pooling rage and casting Savage Defence just as the boss cast Pierce Armour, letting it usually last long enough to catch the following cast from the boss as well. You can use Rage potions at the start of the fight so you can catch the first cast or cover it with a cooldown. Also, save Rage during Quills so you can use active mitigation when you go back. Remember that the boss ability hits harder when you have the debuff - this means that you want to use a cooldown on the cast
after
the one that gives you a debuff not on the one that you're about to miss and gain a debuff stack.
For other tanks AFAIK it's (correct me if I'm wrong):
Monk - Guard, Elusive Brew (not Shuffle)
Pally - SotR
Warrior - Shield Barrier or Shield Block
DK - Death Strike
For Druids I couldn't tell whether the Pulverise buff was counting as Active Mitigation and I'd be interested to know if Cooldowns count but, again, couldn't really tell in the heat of battle.
Edit: The Pulverize buff for Druids does work as AM. Use a Rage potion as you run in to get SD up quick then get Pulverize up quick and keep it up.(##RESPBREAK##)16##DELIM##asakawa##DELIM##

HEROIC MODE:
If you're struggling with this boss on heroic mode the best strategy my group and I found was to kill the little birds ASAP when they appear. Meaning ALL DPS (I'm talking to you too melee) must pay attention to which ash pile a solar bird will spawn. There's two ash rings around the platform. An inner and an outter. You kinda have to cross your fingers that the boss chooses the outter ones versus inner (I don't believe there was any sorta method/trigger to which ash pile the boss chooses and is RNG). When the solar birds appear, they sit there for about 1 second before heading off to chase their intended target. That second is the perfect time in which to burn them and avoid them exploding near another ash pile (unless it's in the inner ring). When they reach 0 health they don't immediately explode either so you have about a 1-2 second window to run away and turn back to the boss once they have no health to avoid exploding damage.
Hope this helps someone out. Regular mode is the same concept, however, the damage isn't anywhere the same as Heroic so it's very easy.

So some notes for Quills. It applies a stacking debuff over time that causes it to deal more damage to individuals hit by it. The debuff drops off pretty quickly when you're no longer being hit by it, but it will go all the way to 15 stacks on the tank before the end, making this a pretty difficult skill to manage.
I expect the design intention was to have people constantly cycling behind the pillar for when he casts it, tank included. That way, no one will ever have more than 3-5 stacks before it falls off again, and the damage can be easily managed. However, we discovered in our guild run tonight that as of now, having a mage run into melee and use Ice Block after the tank has 5-7 stacks is a very effective way to handle this.
Otherwise, if you're having trouble tanking through this mechanic, resist the urge to throw your CDs at the beginning. It hits harder toward the end, and it will usually out-last your CDs, so you'll want to save them for when you'll need them the most (at the end).

I tank a lot of heroics and this is by far the "hardest" boss in the game. Random groups wipe a lot on this boss.

To do this boss on Mythic, avoid the quills by standing behind the pillar and make sure you avoid/kite the familiars, don't let them explode.

In Mythic/Challenge difficulty, You can kill the adds where they spawn to prevent new adds from spawning because the ash piles are 5 yards spreaded.

Can now be tamed

He is now tamable (along with many other great beasts) but when I tamed him, he stayed his original size lol It sure did freak some people out in the ah when he stuffed his head inside and yes, tried dungeons and he stayed the same. I know it'll be fixed but just happy to enjoy it even for a bit.

For any hunter wanting to tame this, the model shown in the dungeon journal does not match what you get once it is tamed. Once the boss is engaged, it takes on the same fiery appearance as Rukhmar. So if you want an awesome looking Rukhmar pet without interfering with people trying to kill Rukhmar for their mount farming, this is the one to get!

This is the BEST secondary pet you can have ever for pvp. I wont tell you why, otherwise blizz will fix it.
