Gumi is one of the new elite challenge-tame Spirit Beasts for BM hunters in 5.2. He uses the blue spectral porcupine skin and spawns up in Kun Lai Summit to the Northwest of One Keg. His challenge is that he runs very fast and lives in terrain that is difficult to maneuver through. He cannot be trapped in Freezing Trap, although he can be CC'd by things such as Concussive Shot. He must be at low health (around 20-30%) to tame. He does very high damage and can 2 shot you most of the time.
The basic goal of his challenge is to kite him until low health then tame him without dying. It is 100% soloable, but if you're having trouble you can always get help from a friend to help CC and DPS him, which can make it a lot easier.
_____________________________________________________________________
Things you will need:
-
Glyph of Tame Beast
-
Aspect of the Cheetah
-
Concussive Shot
-Ability to kite
_____________________________________________________________________
Before you begin, plan out your kiting path first. It should be a long one, really long, in case you need to kite for a while. Too many hunters I've seen have started without a plan of where to go, and ended up running into dead ends or at the edge of a cliff. The path I use is pretty simple, you just go straight across from where Gumi is pointing when he spawns, and go down the path going down the mountain.
Soon there will be a big, wide snowy slope. Go off the path and run up this slope onto the next path.
Just continue along the dirt path until you come to the fork in the road, where you go down the one that goes to the west (the one with the statue crashsite). Then just keep running along that path, it's really long and should give you plenty of time to kite him to low health.
Disengage
is useful to regain distance you may have lost. Again, make sure you have Aspect of the Cheetah on you and Concussive Shot on Gumi at all times, or you WILL get mauled.
Now you're ready to start. You should start off the fight with a Concussive Shot, and following the basic guidelines above, simply begin to kite him along your path. Kite him as far as you need, until the buff Strong Will (which prevents him from being tamed) is removed at lower health. Now pop
Deterrence
, and immediately Tame afterwards.
If you have pulled this off correctly, then congrats on your new pet!

I would just like to nominate Galani (accent over the i) of Wyrmrest Accord as Jerk of the Day. A warlock and I kited Gumi down the mountain and got him down to 20% health... and then this Galani hunter grabs Gumi with a distracting shot for a tame. I hit a distracting shot back and we went back and forth until Gumi hit me once as I was taming, and instead of resetting, Galani tamed him. After all of that work. *sigh* /ignores Galani
Moral of the story: Rude hunters can steal your tame with a Distracting Shot if you are not careful.

First tame on the Dawnbringer server I believe and let me tell you - you will kite him very, very, very far - to my knowledge he does not drop aggro.
I was able to tame him without a pet out, with aspect of the cheetah on, and solo'd it (I was all alone on that darn mountain!)
I did make a few various errors on the twists and turns of the mountain but this is the general path that I took. Once I spotted him I began to kite him down where the flags were - than turned and moved up towards the cobblestone pathway. The pathway will fork after a while - if you're facing forward you want to turn to your left - that way is a clear and pretty much mob-free path (a few low level tigers here and there but nothing really in your way). The other way is filled with Mogu - who if they hit you - they will of course stun you since you have cheetah on - which will make Gumi catch up and one-shot you.
The key to making this a good tame is to always have concussive shot on him - if you feel he's getting to close than feel free to disengage. Ice trap is also a good idea with him. It is also very important to keep your eye on where you're going, this is a mountain after all and if you don't watch out you'll run into mobs, a dead end, or off a cliff.
I would recommend using a deterrence/tame macro and having the glyph of tame beast to make it easy to tame him once his debuff is gone - as you don't want to be hit with his melee attacks anymore than you have to.

To my knowledge, Degu, Gumi and Hutia are the first 3 spirit beasts that aren't actually classified as rare, and have quick re spawn timers. It does feel like kind of a let down since one of the great qualities of the spirit beasts is how unique they are, but I guess the fight mechanics make up for how easy they are to find.

I just tamed him on Nemesis 6/03/2013 - 6:38 am after a few deaths XD. Solo'd it, didn't use another pet. I had aspect of the cheetah on, glyph of tame beast and just shot concussive shots and serpent stings (to lower his life faster) and ran for my life xD. Then when his debuff was gone (you have to lower his health to about 20~30%) I hit the tame macro button (tame+deterrence), wich I highly recommend, because he hits very hard. I ran in circles in a not much big area, it worked well.
ps.: About his location, I found him pretty easy looking on the map on this page and then I noticed his marks on the ground. Since they are dark and are on snow they're pretty easy to see.

I tamed him today on US-Nagrand
This is what I used for the encounter;
Talents
迅疾如风
- speed for kiting
束缚射击
- can be CC with this while casting tame beast
意气风发
- if anything goes wrong
60 talents is personal
夺命黑鸦
- Damage dealer
- Instant cast and slows
Glyphs
- for the extra speed while using AotC
- better kiting distance when needed
- saves time for the cast
This is how I did it.
I set Binding Shot on the ground in front of Gumi and casted Glaive toss. Used my dps cooldowns and used AMoC, SS and Arcane Shot. Keep Concussive Shot or any slow at all times and I kited Gumi all the way down the mountain. When the buff is gone, set up Binding Shot at his feet to stun him and cast Tame Beast.
Then you should have a new Spirit Beast pet and I hope this guide helped you taming him. :)

Like previously stated this is an easy get all it requires is aspect of the cheetah. concusion shot, deterrence, and your traps this is seriously the easiest one out of them all except the red one this one DOES NOT have the range attack like the red one so if you chose to get the red one first then you need to know this or your going to die because this one is very very very fast and must be kited from a far distance.

Tamed this beauty yesterday. I'm really bad at kiting (shame on me) so I had a little help from my friends. Actually Gumi succeed in killing all 3 of us, for around 40 min - And we even had a little accident and killed him once. (The respawn timer is exactly 5 minutes, he died 20:31 and respawned 20:36).
We ended up being a warlock (doing the demonic gateway as a quick escape), a disc priest for healing (used pain supression and shield while I tamed) and myself, spamming concussive shot and using binding shot (Talent) for the tame.
The whole taming took around 45 minutes, and we died a lot. I don't know how people tame this pet all by themselves - Unless they use the whole freaking day :P I'm usually very patient, and own every single spirit beast in the game (Though now I am missing Hutia and Degu), but this guy was hard! He hits hard takes down aprox. 50% of your hp pr. hit (hits from 150k till 230k) and he is immune to almost every other classes slow mechanics than hunters. (No rooting etc.)
The biggest problem having to tame him was that he killed me before I was able to finish the tame, you have to deal with this using binding shot, and you can switch to Iron Hawk (Talent) while taming, if you are lucky you will survive 3 hits instead of 2 then ;)
If you need to respec some of your talents there is a guy selling tomes in One Keg, you can also repair here.
I recommend teaming up with some friends, especially if like me, you are not good at kiting. This guy is not only to be kited, he needs to get down to 20% hp (and he has a stunning hp pool of 3939k!) so you have to kite for a VERY LONG time, while doing some dps. And to make things even harder he lives on a mountain, so you have to avoid dead ends, and falling. (Do not disengage off a cliff and die like me ;))
I tamed him at 20:54 on Spinebreaker with a little help from my friends <3

After taming this pet I can safely say that Blizz did a good job. In a group of 5 it took us over an hour to tame this thing just for one person. While the rest kited her I stood behind her to get ready. No damage can be done while you are taming, which means your group MUST die (I found that a Mage and a Blood DK with army of dead is the beast way to bring his health down), it must be going after you. Make sure that buff is off. When she is coming after you be sure that you have hit her with a concussive shot before you tame, and you need Glyph of Tame Beast for this. Or else you will be dying...A LOT! And with the 1-2 hit kills its safe to say this pet is a stressful tame.

It has been said that you need the ability to kite, and you do not. I can't kite to save my life. I can backpedal or run forward, and you can solo this spirit beast doing just that. What I used for talents:
迅疾如风
,
束缚射击
,
意气风发
,
凶暴野兽
,
, and
. What I used for glyphs:
被烧毁的雕文
,
被烧毁的雕文
, and
被烧毁的雕文
. Main thing here is to keep Aspect of the Cheetah and Concussive shot up at all times. Use Ice trap and Binding shot as they became available, and Disengage when needed. Using this I just attacked Gumi with all I had and after every Concussive shot turned around and ran forward. Before Concussive shot dropped I did a 180, shot Gumi again, then another 180 and kept running. Taking just a couple Arcane shots and Glaive tosses when I could safely do so. Dire Beast and A Murder of Crows helped out a lot since I didn't have a pet out of course. Using this method, I solo tamed this beast without kiting, and you can too. As far as which path to take, the other posts have explained it well. Good luck everyone!

Another easy way to do it solo is:
- learn Glyph of Tame Beast
- have a free slot for a new pet
- search for a random pet in Kun-Lai and tame it
- set it to passive
- switch to Aspect of the Cheetah
- attack Gumi and kite him/her/it like noted before several times on this page
- after some while let your pet attack Gumi to get it/him/her faster down
- best kiting route is towards the Point where you killed General Sho Lien (
一位旅行者的不幸
)
- when he/she/it is at 20% health dismiss your pet, switch to another Aspect, throw a freezing trap and start taming
- good luck :)

Tamed @11:11pm on server Trollbane.
He was definitely challenging... I found that using concussive shot repeatably worked best. I also kited him kind of in a circle DOWN the mountain from where he was. I found it a little bit easier, as you can create a decent circle path over and over and at points going downhill, jump and gain a little bit more distance. Popping all cooldowns as everyone else previously said helps tremendously.
When I tamed, I threw down an ice trap a ways in front of me and concus shot and ran max distance and tamed. He didnt even touch me when I was taming.
I used the glyph of tame and pathfinding, and it took about an hour and about 11 deaths ><
Dont get discouraged if you die many times... throw some fun music on, it helped me... lol

As of patch 5.2, there are three new spirit beasts that look like porcupines which hunters may tame. All three have extremely short spawn timers (for example, I have seen Hutia tamed and up again ten minutes later). This means that they are usually present - their challenge isn't in the find but in the tame. The hunter must keep out of close range, interrupt any applicable spellcasting, and wear their health down until the buff that prevents taming, Strong Will, disappears.

I'm unsure if this will be of help to anyone, but an item I found useful for taming this pet was the
枯萎的睡莲
which, as a hunter gave me the dash ability, which was extremely useful in adding a bit of distance between you and Gumi. (Just be careful not to run too far away and reset him!)
EDIT: After patch 6.0 this no longer applies as Wilted Lilypad is now vendor trash and of no use.

Just tamed him on Azshara. If you're unlucky enough to have him spawn at 53,58, when the Sha is standing below him, getting off that mountain is the worst of it.
Not only do you have to contend with him chasing you, you also have to avoid a bazillion mobs that will cancel Aspect of the Cheetah if they so much as look at you.
Add to that the fact that you're bailing off a mountain in something reminiscent of The Man from Snowy River, and it's a night well spent.
I actually made a macro: Concussive Shot, Serpent Sting, Arcane Shot, and set the most obnoxious sound to Concussive shot coming off cooldown I could find.
I was not going to hunt for buttons.
I drug him (read..he cased me) off the mountain and headed to the road. Then kited him all the way to the Gate into the Vale..and here's my blond moment.
Not thinking about the fact that there is a Behemoth and another bazillion Dailies mobs right inside the gate, by the time I got there, I was committed.
This guy cheats. He will make a straight line to you regardless what you have to go around, under, over or through. So make sure you don't figure any sharp turns into your kite route.
I kited him through the Behemoth, the Mogu, the Quilen and of course we had Subjugated Serpents today. There had to be dragons.
By the time I got to the Golden Pagoda he was below 20% and I tamed him. That was the easiest part.
I wasn't sure if he'd follow me into a new zone...he had no qualms. He was going to chase me til one of us went down.
Now to see if he's more useful than the Direhorn in a raid, or if he'll be decoration for a screenshot.
Fun tame.

I did this with a PvP spec and gear on QT Alliance side character Fade. I did have PvE gear, but figured, what the hell. Just Kite him down the mountain, and keep conc shot him every cooldown. Use serpent sting for your main dmg and kite him in a circle around One Keg Village.
No disengage, no pet, no funny talents needed and I'm the worlds worst kiter. Just practice a few times and you'll get him. Just make sure your full health before the tame, and you have the tame Glyph... hey presto you'll have Gumi :)

I just tamed Gumi! He's really a cool pet and I named him Icicle because to me, he looks like ice! Okay so I tried to tame him alone a few days ago and gave up. I had tried three times and came SO close but he would kill me right after my disengage ended. Perhaps when I started the tame I made the mistake of not being at full-health but either way he hits SO hard that it may have killed me regardless.
So, my husband has a Holy-Paladin and I asked him to help me--worked perfect. During the tame I used anything I had to slow him down while also attacking to get him to drop his buff. Then, my husband's Pally continued to help me slow him down as well and kept me at full health. Neither one of us got attacked once because he was slowed so well. I had all of the threat the entire time so his Pally could get VERY close to Gumi if need be without aggro-ing him at all.
Right when Gumi's buff drops, his Pally stunned him (hammer of justice). I used deterrence just in case then started the tame...GOT HIM! ;o) I know someone else posted some glyphs and talents but I wanted to show you what he and I used as a team in case you can only find one other person to help you! Good luck! It was pretty fun (after it was over and I won)!
My hunter used:
Glyph of Liberation
Glyph of Aspect of the Cheetah
Glyph of Pathfinding
Glyph of Tame Beast
Glaive Toss
Concussive Shot
Ice Trap
A Paladin helping you should use:
Judgement with Burden of Guilt Glyph
Hammer of Justice to stun before tame

If you're "directionally challenged" like me, there's a really easy path to kite him.
When you find him, you'll notice the flags and ropes marking the mountain path. If you fly up above his spawn area, you'll see some burning abandoned campsite. Use that as a type of marker, if you will. I kited him in circles, basically, down the path, back up the side of the mountain, to the burning campsite, and back down to where I first engaged him in the epic chase. :P
Make no mistake, he will two shot you. He killed me a couple of times before I got the hang of it, but it was quite easy once I did!
Aspect of the cheetah was VITAL.
Concussive shot was used every time it was up. I took no chances. :P
Reapply serpent sting every chance you get. I tamed him as beast mastery, so I was frequently using a murder of crows (only got to do that once, of course. wicked long cooldown) and dire beast. Helped distract him for a second, but don't let your guard down. He hauls ass at you fairly quick.
Used glaive toss when I could, spammed arcane if I had any spare time between running.
Don't fret if you can't DPS him down extremely fast.
That's not the point of this tame. The point is,
it WILL take you some time, and there's no shame in simply hitting concussive and focusing on putting some space between it and you.
Eventually, a few laps later, I popped deterrance, one more concussive and hit tame. He smacked me to half health, just as the tame finished.
Do not attempt this without glyph of tame beast. Those 4 seconds can make the difference between a tame and a loss.
On a side note, "Stompy" - The rare elite mountain goat began making tracks right in the area I was running Gumi in circles! Talk about luck :P I had already tamed him earlier that day, but his tracks are extremely easy to spot if you're poking about looking for a double tame ;)
Good luck, all! And Happy Hunting!

Helped a friend get this pet while I was on my Rogue. (This is just from a Rogues PoV, I have no idea really what my Hunter friend was casting other the spells listed)
Idhuntthat
's post was very helpful (but we didn't see it till after).
Hunter trying to tame Gumi used:
Glyph of Pathfinding
Glyph of Aspect of the Cheetah
Glyph of Tame Beast
Concussive Shot
On my Rogue I had:
Crippling Poison
Cheap Shot
Sinister Strike
Kidney Shot
Smoke Bomb
Vanish
I waited stealthed by the turning point in the kiting route (he went down the path and a U-turn back up the mountain to where Gumi sits)
He would pull and use concussive shot and disengage to keep distance. When Gumi got to the "U-turn" point I would
Cheap Shot
and
Sinister Strike
till 5 combo points were built up.
I would then follow without auto-attacking so as not to rip agro off the hunter kiting Gumi. If
Crippling Poison
was at 3 seconds left I'd auto-attack/stop-attack to refresh the poison. The only times I used
Kidney Shot
was on the U-turns, followed by
Sinister Strike
to 5 combo points while stunned.
I did use
Smoke Bomb
if I drew agro after attacking (watched Omen threat meter for this).
When the buff
Strong Will
came off, I made sure I had 5 combo points and the hunter was max distance. He cast
Tame Beast
. When Gumi got close to the Hunter during the tame, I used
Kidney Shot
then
Vanish
.
Kidney Shot
wore off and he did get hit once but
Glyph of Tame Beast
made it possible for him to finally get Gumi!
Took about 3 rounds kiting and more than a few attempts to work out the method we used but I'm glad he got it.
Hope this helps Hunters who happen to have rogue friends patient enough to assist.
Happy Hunting <3
Ps. I made him name the Gumi after my Rogue muhahahahahaha! /flex

Another hunter and I tamed him and we only died once during the whole process. We traded stuns/slows and kept traps down. It was very easy with two hunters. The other hunter was Surv spec and did not want the pet, so he had extra power in his traps and his pet was out, so that helped with the dps. Once he was down to tamable health, the other hunter feigned, aggro went to me, I popped deterrence, tame beast, and he was mine! Adorable little guy! Thank you, Mouthfulls of Runetotem!

So I just tamed him, used all of the advice that was given here. I kited him all the way down the path that is facing him. Also, make sure to keep hitting him with concussive shot and glaive toss the second they are off cool down if you are too slow at hitting them he will catch up to you. Make sure to use deterrence before Tame Beast and have the glyph for the 4 second faster tame beast.
I've been having a problem with him dying in raids though, he somehow gets aggro and his pet bar has no way to turn his taunt off? I'm not sure what is going on there, I don't have a problem with my other pets. So, I've put him on the back burner until I figure this out. Cool looking pet though.

Just tamed this cute guy.
As described on previous posts, I started up with Concussive Shot, immediately follow up with A Murder of Crows and Stampede.
After that you need to cast Concussive Shot already, as first concussive effect is about to end on Gumi. Then just follow up with a normal rotation of Serpent Sting, Arcane Shot and Cobra Shot.
You will need to include in that "rotation" a
Concussive Shot every 2 or 3 arcane shots, and every 2 (or 3 if you have more haste) Cobra Shot.
I think this is the most important part, to have that concussive shot up every second, don't wait until effect is off, just pop it when you have it.
While you are doing that, if you have Dire Beast and Glaive Toss, you can use them within the rotation, when off Cool Down.
After a repeated rotation, and a lot of kitting, ( ilvl 460) you get the chance to tame. Its important to have a
被烧毁的雕文
to safely and accurately tame this guy.
Remember to use Deterrence first and after that Tame Beast. And SPAM that concussive shot.

Explosive Trap - knockback actually works
Pathfinding
Black Ice
Minor
Tame Beast
Always be in AofC/P

If you have some spare Focus use Glaive Toss
Use the free Procs from Thrill of the Hunt for damage never use Cobra Shot cause you can't cast Concussive while casting Cobra Shot.
Drop(don't use launcher) Explosive for the knockback and Ice Traps
Clear the below terrain of any mobs...
near One Keg
you can actually lure him down the Mountain and he will not despawn this is where I tamed him.

Seems to me that you used to be able to tame any pet, no matter what spec your hunter was, but that only BM hunters could actually summon certain kinds of pets.
One of my guildies asked me to tank this guy on my Monk, so I flew out and we pulled Gumi. My monk wound up dying because I had to stop DPSing once his buff wore off, and I wasn't able to generate any more Chi to use my defensive abilities. My guildy failed to complete his tame in time and wound up dying, and he immediately gave up and logged out. I was irritated to have flown out there and died for nothing, so I went back on my own Survival hunter to tame the spirit beast.
After some trail and error, mostly determining that Gumi is immune to
Freezing Trap
and
Ice Trap
, I managed to kite him down the hill using
Concussive Shot
and my DoTs to whittle down his health until the buff wore off. At that point, I followed the advice noted elsewhere of hitting
Glaive Toss
,
Deterrence
, and
Tame Beast
(with the
Glyph
activated to reduce channeling time from 10 secs to 6 secs). Even though his untameable debuff had expired, I still received an error message saying, "This pet is not tameable", so I quickly feigned to avoid dying again.
I still would have liked to have been able to stable this pet, just to have him, but I have no interest in changing my Marks or Survival specs to BM, so just FYI, don't waste your time trying to tame this guy if you aren't a BM hunter.

- aspect of the pack on
I then, pulled him to the bottom of the mountain (following the flag poles), and kited him in circles there. I had a friend taking care of the trash around me meanwhile. Then with a macro that did deterrence then tame beast. Got him!
I'm an AWFUL "kiter" so just running in circles on the plain ground down of the mountain was MUCH easier than trying to kite him on the mountain!
Good Luck!

Fairly easy to tame. Use Conc shot on CD, Binding shot is useful if he gets too close to you. I was backpedalling half the time to cast Cobra shots at him to get focus back, between the snare/stun on binding shot and Conc shot perma slow he pretty much can't touch you. There's a very easy kite path around the mountain with no mobs on it, you can just follow that. When his buff falls off toss out binding shot and cast tame beast, the channel should finish just as he's getting out of the bind. The tame glyph is really the only one you need, if you mess up kiting the cheetah glyph can come in handy though.

Thanks to Eirin, whose kiting path worked perfectly! (A circle beginning where you start the tame at max distance from Gumi, then going up the mountain path past the red flag & torch, through the abandoned camp site above & down the path from there, then curving to the left across the snowy mountainside, down & back around until you reach the path marked w/ flags & torches again, & back up until you reach where you started taming him.)
I'd also suggest:
1) Run around the path several times to get used to it first.
2) Use Major Glyphs: Pathfinding (extra run speed), Liberation (5% Heal if you have to Disengage) & Deterrence (extra protection during tame.) Minor Glyphs: Tame Beast (as suggested by all) & Aspect of the Cheetah (you do NOT want to be slowed if hit.)
3) To reiterate what others have said, you CANNOT run backwards while kiting like you can w/ Hutia & Degu. Gumi is too fast. You will need to run forward & have Aspect of the Cheetah up the entire time.
4) Start at max distance w/ Concussive Shot, then Serpent Sting, then RUN. Keep your eye on Concussive Shot the ENTIRE time & always refresh it immediately. This is the most important thing about the tame.
5) When they are available, hit Crows, Dire Beast & Stampede while running. Only worry about refreshing Serpent Sting, or getting off another damaging shot, if he's just out of range when you go to refresh Concussive Shot. Keeping distance is much more important than worrying about how fast you're burning down his health.
4) If he gets too close, Disengage. *Important: Refresh Cheetah if you're hit.*
5) Be patient. You'll be running around this circuit quite a few times before his health is low enough & his Strong Will buff disappears. When it does, hit Concussive Shot one last time, pop Deterrence & Tame!
6) A couple of trinkets I found helpful for all three spirit porcupine tames are Seed of Tranquil Growth for 10 mins of hands-free heals & Crate of Kidnapped Puppies to slow your quarry a bit more & add a little damage. I'm sure there are others (some of them mentioned on this page) but these are the ones I had!
Best of Luck & Happy Hunting!

Just tamed him around 3:30 server time on Dentarg - US . I had a death knight friend help me out with him, if you don't have someone like a druid to help you out this works VERY well. Have the DK summon his army of ghouls and send them in, you have plenty of time to DPS Gumi down to 30% health as he tries to kill the ghouls (my friend was Blood spec) . When ready to tame, distracting shot, detterence and Tame Beast. Best of luck to all of you! =)

As of 6.0.2, these spirit beasts are much easier to tame. On Gumi, use Major Glyphs: Pathfinding (extra run speed), Liberation (5% Heal if you have to Disengage) & Deterrence (extra protection during tame.) Minor Glyphs: Tame Beast (as suggested by all) & Aspect of the Cheetah (you do NOT want to be slowed if hit.). Also spec talents Dire Beast, A Murder of Crows.
Start with Aspect of the Cheetah, Concussive short, Crows and Dire Beast, lay down an Ice trap and run, keep hitting him with Concussive, toss glaives, and check his health, they go down really easy these days, so be prepared to tame. Barely had to go 200 yards before he was able to be tamed.

Tamed Gumi this morning @ level 100. If you're 100 remember: he needs to be low health to tame, your damaging abilities will take him down fast so be careful, and he still does significant damage.
I used concussive shot, arcane shot, and autoshot only! I didn't want to chance killing him with a big hit. My tame was far from perfect because I didn't know what to expect at 100.
EDIT: While I was writing this I tabbed back in (I didn't leave yet) and he respawned in less than 5 minutes!
EDIT2: I fought a 100 gladiator warrior and killed him, when he ressed he killed the Gumi that just spawned again.. within 10 minutes of that time Gumi was back AGAIN for a 3rd time.!

You can do this without Kiting. I just had a tank pet attack, and I healed it while attacking myself. Then when Gumi's HP is half or just a bit lower, you dismiss your pet.
If your pet is dead, then use deterrance, and concussive shot and then revive(its only a 3sec cast) then tame Gumi.
This was a lot easier for me then Kiting.

Here's a quick Legion Pre-patch update for hunters: you can safely ignore all the strategies talked about in these comments. My experience today is that Gumi doesn't hit hard (at level 100) and requires no kiting. You will still need to be in BM spec, and still need to damage him below 30% before you can cast Tame Beast, but that's it. Enjoy!

At 110 it is possible to tame Gumi by simply taking off all of your armor and punching him to 30%. He does barely any damage to you at this level and it doesn't take long at all to punch him down. With your armor on it is possible to one shot him.

For those of us who use targeting macros for the convenience of knowing if a rare is up and nearby the Rare Love AddOn over at
Curse
or
WoW Interface
does help with this one.
The AddOn includes hunter rares as well as pet and mount drop rares.
Basically, it groups a whole ton of macros into one simple macro. It allows tracking of
物有所值
,
霜害
,
罕见品种
, etc and rares such as this and
布尔吉·黑心
,
利尔·迪米
,
疯狂的商人
,
月牙
, and
暗月兔子
with a single button on your action bars.
So I just use a quick flypast and press the button a few times when in the vicinity. Saves time.

@ lvl 120 to tame him, you need to damage him before you can tame, I took all gear off, jumped off cliff took rez sickness (75% reduction), and used a lvl 3 pole arm to hit him without killing him.

If you're trying to tame at 120, be sure to take off all your gear and weapon. I accidentally killed him the first time and even punching him took him down to like 3k health on the second try.

At level 120, take off all your gear.

needs to be below 30% health. Tamed him twice, just right click on him after all gear is taken off, allow your character to hit him 3 times then immediately hit the esc. you will auto target him because he is attacking you, which makes it easy to just click your tame. Don't worry he does no damage to you at 120 but naked, happy hunting.

Additionally to be lucky not to crit him naked twice, you currently have to be lucky not to proc "Bonfires Blessing" on the hit, killing him instantly..

At lvl120 taming wasn't bad. Once found (Gumi/Hutia/Degu) strip off all your armour and weapons, fly way up high and drop to your death. When you come back, resurrect and get the 75% sickness. Very important to get the resurrection sickness. I then flew over to where it was, and equipped my fishing pole as a weapon. No weapon sometimes works but if they heal then it's a much longer battle. Fishing pole worked fine. Once down to 30%, it was easy to tame.

In case later changes require dropping the zone:

Gumi has a fast respawn
(around 5 minutes from what I observed), so don't worry if you accidentally kill the spirit beast or someone else does while you are taming. I saw Gumi three times between two Sha of Anger kills.
You have to get Gumi to 30% health or lower to tame
(at least up to BfA). I tested this out by trying to tame Gumi many times both before and during getting the spirit beast to lower health. It would not work even at 31%.
Being naked with rez sickness methods work great
for higher level hunters to get Gumi to 30% for tame. Get naked, fly up and drop to your death and rez at graveyard, or jump off the mountain side. Whatever works to kill you. Just remember to accept the sickness over running back to your body. Pop on a profession tool if you need a little extra damage and have one handy. At 120, being naked with rez sickness (only shirt and tabard on) still took some time for me to get Gumi to 30%, even when I tried equipping profession tools (e.g., plain fishing pole, arclight spanner, skinning knife). Lower level is bound to take longer, as well as higher level (Shadowlands+) might be perfect for just punching, so just adjust accordingly.
*Pardon another post, but I found it annoying trying to find info on the respawn timer and an easy waypoint copy/paste. I hope this is helpful to some as I tried to just merge most of the helpful information for higher level taming, and please feel free to add info in comments if anything changes with upcoming expansions or you have other helpful advice.

I can confirm (at least for the time being) you CAN get naked and punch these critters without having to die and take rez sickness at lvl50 (pre-Shadowlands prepatch). For me it was two hits and they went down to 15%. Not sure how that will change once we get into Shadowlands and start leveling, but for now it is doable :D

I don't know if this is true of all spirit beasts, but I was able to tame Bulvinkel at level 12, before I got the Exotic Beasts ability. I am, however, unable to summon him as my primary pet. So, it seems that with Shadowlands, you can tame an exotic pet you just can't summon it until you hit 39. I have not done extensive testing, I just had this happen and thought it might be useful information for other hunters :)

Here's a little Shadowlands update for you. I killed him a couple of times before I got it right.
Still need to get him to 30%
At lvl 60, getting naked and punching him took out 50% of his hp - so that didn't work
Rez sickness method (basically -- get naked, fall to death from the skies, and rez at the graveyard for a 75% stat penalty - graveyard is super near the spawn point) still works.
Punching him in this state works and doesn't take too long..
If you have a profession weapon with you, that could speed it up a bit. I also tested it with
“掮灵垂钓器”
and it doesn't one shot him but it also wasn't
that
much faster.
Happy hunting!

At level 54 with no gear on (only a ilvl 100 gun) auto shot did in fact kill him in 1 hit.
without weapon i hit for more then half but not enough to be able to tame (3rd attempt was better yet as it crit and one shot him)
my solution was to take res sickness while naked to limit my damage even further.

I was tamed one other spirit beast without having to get it down to 30% so i was confused when i read what people suggested i do to get this boy down to 30% before taming it.
today i just went there, got naked ready to commit suicide and i saw the good boy, and punched it once, was left with 16% and tamed him.
I am lvl57 hunter though, maybe those three levels do make a difference?

Was able to tame it today as a maxed out BM. These were the steps I went through:
Strip off all armour and weapons
Generate your rez sickness
Have a /stopattack macro created
Click tranquilizing shot immediately followed by /stopattack. In fact, click /stopattack a few times during the tranquilizing shot cooldown.
When you get below 50%, click tame beast just after the shot, and go back to clicking /stopattack. Be overly cautious and click the macro multiple time as I wasn't sure when the punching starts as a self defense.
When down to about 30% health, tame.
In my case, there's a zonewide buff,
Bonfire's Blessing
, I can't get rid of. First few tries it still kicked in and overpowered my tranquilizing shot. I just happened to get lucky this last attempt, but going forward, will do it on a non-buffed day.
Hope this helps everyone.

I didn't like the idea of purposely dying and being naked while dealing with a porcupine :)
I used
满溢灰烬之镜
this creates a shield that will explode some of the damage it prevents. That said, it should work in all situations regardless of the level difference.
the item has a 2.5 min cooldown, so it's going to take 5 minutes in total. That's the downside - if someone comes by within the 5 minutes and feels they should "help" you, you're screwed :)

7/2/2022 @1120am on Hydraxis.
Patch: 9.2.5, BM Hunter lvl 60
Used:
整体缩小仪
and
复活虚弱
(not sure if it made a difference using both)
Equipped: Naked and a
军校强弓
Tamed: Because I was tiny (I'd recommended waiting until he spawns to use the shrinker) I was able to stay kiting him on his little platform, and just moved in a circle. I only used
震荡射击
and ran away/
逃脱
to get some distance. He didn't take a lot of dmg due to debuffs, but I had already killed him a million times, so I didn't mind. I was able to get him to about 26% with just concussive shot and then was able to tame.
*Note: I did do this during the fire holiday, which has the '
篝火的祝福
' buff, so I had accidentally killed him with that a few times.
Happy Hunting!

It's tameable! Just follow these steps:
-Tabard & Fishing pole equipped only
-Check to make sure he's up
-Fly up & fall to your death
-Talk to Spirit Healer to rez & get sickness
-Make sure pets are dismissed & space available to tame
-Fly back & melee a few times to get within tameable HP range
Cheers!

I tamed two of them today. Luckily the respawn is short, because at level 70 everything seemed to fail. I tried removing my gear, resurrection sickness, you name it. It seemed undoable until I remebered seeing Sugercake's comment from July 2 of this year mentioning the
整体缩小仪
. Sure enough, no resurrection sickness required, I just took of all my gear and punched them until they were at 25%. It took maybe ten strikes, so I never worried I'd kill them. The only thing is that the
整体缩小仪
has a CD of 30 minutes, so if you want two, you might hang around and kill the
怒之煞
in the meantime. Good luck!

I managed to tame Gumi at level 70 during Dragonflight 10.0
TLDR have a low level in your group, but they have to die/lose aggro.
1. I have two accounts. I brought a level 46 demon hunter and grouped up.
2. Took off all DH gear. Punched him down to <30% (I actually got down to 1% for reason below)
3. I stopped auto attacking on DH
4. Tried to tame on Hunter, however it wouldn't work.
5. I threw down a freezing trap and did a war stomp (Tauren) trying to 'tag'.
6. Still couldn't tame. Took a few minutes, but Gumi killed my DH.
7. Gumi turned attention to me and attacked.
8. Tried taming again with focus on me and it worked.

Tamed him at level 53, patch 10 Dragonflight. Equipped gray item (cracked bow) and got Res Sickness, then used Whole Body Shrinka and hit him with the gray item bow until he was low enough. You have to be quick because you only get 1 minute of Res Sickness and the Whole Body Shrinka only shrinks you for 3 minutes. Sickness ran out while I was hitting him but the Body Shrinka kept my damage low enough that I got him no problem.

Remove all armour/weapons
Use the toy
Punch until lower than 30%
Tame
The toy can be found at 57.6 62.2
"Since the change to Rez Sick, you have not enough time to get back to hit him. You can use multiple Goblin Dragon Gun's MK2 (painstaking slow) or have someone level 30ish lower his health for you. Foam Sword also doesn't work and eny Mines or Grenades scale with level and instantly kill him.
Got it done easy with:
整体缩小仪
Took all gear of and use the toy, then punch until 30% and tame.... Good luck"

So this may have been more difficult than it needed to be, but my bf and I definitely had fun with this. Keep in mind this only works if you have another person in your party who's lower level.
I (lvl 70 hunter in Dragonflight) didn't have the Whole Body Shrinka toy so my bf went on his Level 61 Death Knight, removed all his armor, died, and came back with the rez sickness debuff.
When my bf came back, we started a duel with each other (we did this bc otherwise he wasn't taking any damage from Gumi). Once the duel commenced, he autoed Gumi about 3-4 times until it was around 5k - 10k HP. Then I shot my bf until he was 1HP (ultimately winning the duel) and let Gumi auto him to death. Right before my bf died, I used binding shot (can also use the toy Fruit Basket) to make sure I had interacted with Gumi in order to gain/transfer the aggro (otherwise Gumi just reset). Once Gumi started targeting me I was able to tame!
It was a trial and error process, and it looks like there are easier and more effective ways to do this. But we had fun nonetheless and we just wanted to share ^^
