Portent is much like Madexx, in that he spawns as several different colors; blue, red, purple and green.
He paths through the Valley of Eternal Blossoms and is completely stealthed.
In order to find him, you must find his tracks and follow them until you do not find any more.
Once you get to the end, a flare infront of where he left his last track should reveal him. This is when you should tame, or toss out a hunter's mark so you can continue to see him through stealth.
The good news is that the tracks can only be seen by hunters, so there should be much less/almost no killing by other classes!

this little video
is very helpful there is a Patrol map in the middle of it, note that if you have not completed the area, you will not be able to track, see or interact with this mob in the middle of the vale due to phasing. I say "completed" very loosly as I'm unaware of the phasing in the area and am just being safe

I have tamed the red, purple and green. They have a fairly short respawn time, which is around 2 hours...or at least it was when I went hunting for them.
One important note for those looking...when you find his tracks, follow them BACKWARDS. As for now, they are messed up in directions. In other words, if you see the toes pointing south...follow them north. :)

1. You CAN see his tracks while flying easily, even from a pretty high distance. So finding his tracks while on a flying mount is your best and easiest bet.
2. Portent can not be hurt. He simply does not receive damage, so you don't have to worry about anyone kill stealing your tame.
3. I've tamed him twice now and once while taming from a distance, he simply did not attack me. But once while right next to him, he did attack me, but in around 425'sh gear, did very little damage to me. So worrying about damage is a non issue.
4. While taming him from a distance, he did not stop but kept on pathing. So my first attempt to tame was interrupted when he pathed out of taming range. So make sure to tame him while he is pathing towards you and or when your right next to him.
5. I can confirm that the pathing diagram on the link to the video in the above comments is very accurate.
6. He did spawn for me at around 2 hours.
7. I have tamed the purple and the green one.
8. As of my comment, his footsteps are still backwards. So when you see his footsteps make sure to follow them backwards until you don't see them anymore.
9. As stated in above comments, simply put a flare where you think he is, based on his last visible footprint. It's not hard, he'll show up and then just simply put a hunters mark on him and tame.
10. I did spot his tracks, flared and marked him when I was level 89. When I reached 90, I no longer could spot him for several hours. I then did the questline in the Vale of the Eternal Blossoms ( a handful of easy quests that took me less then an hour ) and shortly after spot his tracks and tamed him. So I can neither confirm or deny that due to phasing, when you hit 90 you might have to complete the questline in order to spot him. But it seems to me that is the case.
------------------------
All and all, I don't know if he is being considered a rare, but for me at least, he is a pretty easy find and grab pet. If the majority of his respawns are around 2 hours then this should be a pretty easy grab for most hunters. That and due to the fact that he can't be killed. This makes a huge difference in the chances of him being their for the tame. I've also read that non-hunters can't see his tracks. I don't know if this is true, but it doesn't really matter if he can't be killed, because non-hunters won't be able to do anything to him anyway.
But for myself, I wanted the green/yellow one and I got him with my second tame on the same day. So a very low stress pet to grab for me and now my main pet. So I'm pretty happy. Good luck getting him, he's a beauty!

After snagging Hexapos, decided to try my luck and see if Portent was up again, as I wanted to replace the color of him I had (the pinkish red one), and sure enough he was. Snagged the pretty green one at 4:28 am game time on Antonidas server.

His tracks are extremely easy to spot from the air
and as others have said...they face the wrong direction so follow them backwards
.
Edit: I can confirm that Portent's tracks are now facing the right direction.
Follow Portent's tracks the proper way, do not follow them backwards.
I don't know how much questing has to be done to fix the phasing issue, but I have not started doing any quests in the area and I know the phasing is a HUGE issue for me.
I ALWAYS spot his tracks by Mogu'shan Palace and they phase out near the middle of the map, right before Tu Shen Burial Ground (around the 57.8, 60.8 mark actually). Edit: You just have to start the dailies in that area. Quest through enough to be able to pick up the dailies (I actually DID some of the dailies too, not sure if that would make a difference but I don't think it does).
I have tamed him twice. Caught the green first and replaced it with the red. Almost caught him a third time but a dungeon popped and I figured it would be nice to leave him up for another hunter anyway. I helped a friend catch the red one as well.
I'm waiting for the purple one, though to be honest I would keep the red one if it weren't for his messed up 'whiskers' which are actually just red rectangles sticking out the sides of his nose. Why has no one else commented on this....it sort of makes me fear I'm the only one who has noticed. At first I thought it was just my particular red one, until I saw the screen shots here and realised....nope....it's all the red ones. Edit:
I still seem to be one of the few people truly bothered by this facial anomaly on the red skin. It has not been fixed yet.
His whiskers have been fixed.

Tamed my Portent tonight at 20:58 server time - Hellscream EU. I got the blue one :D Went just as described - followed the tracks backwards and flared near the Ruins of Guo-Lai and there he was. Easy tame but very satisfying - am loving the real 'hunting' aspect of these new rares!

this Elite Hunters pet is deathly hard to kill as it will patrol through hostile mobs.
All rare hunter pets have been marked as elite and will not be able to be "taged"
unless the hunter dies/feigns death
(updated in 5.2), adding to this all rare hunter pets this expansion require you track them with tracks and reveal the spawn with a hunter flare, only hunters can reveal these spawns in other words add to it the fact that it is taged by an unknown sources upon being revealed this makes it a plain statement that these are meant to be tamed as pets.
after asking in the Vale if any hunters wanted it I set about experimenting after much sacrifice on my tank pets part (kiteing and holding off the mobs that attacked me) and much running after the seemingly oblivious Portent I was able to kill it (I died a little inside that day but as the saying goes "FOR SCIENCE!"). Portent drops no sum of gold, and no Leet items to speak of he will only drop
晶化忠诚之泪
that's it, hardly worth the amount of work it'd take to kill it, not to mention that it would hardly cover your repair bill if you tried.
in conclusion this is meant to be tamed not killed so be a good sport and leave it to the hunters!
Punterhunter out!

So I just finished taming all for colors of Portent on Antonidas. While waiting and waiting for the purple one that I needed to finish the set, I literally saw this rare spawning within 30 minutes of being tamed each time. Not sure if I was simply lucky, or he actually can have a spawn timer this short.

Well first i would like to thank all the posters your information was vary helpful in getting tho set of 4
i believe the last post i have tamed 2 of them within 30 minutes and find the spawn rate to be about that since the color is random i have had to tame some of the colors and then abandon them to get to the next spawn in order to get them all i have found the tracks all over the zone and are easy to spot
I also noticed sometimes the track will vanish and then start again in another area within the zone so if they vanish keep looking in the zone until you find them again i did only the first quests except the honored to revered quests and then the tracks appeared for me so its not necessary to do all of them i believe but am not sure you only have get to the quest that sends you to kill the stone quilens and then your good to go these guys are absolutely beautiful and worth the time to get the set and when you hit stampede its is just fantastic to see all of the up at the same time again thanks to everyone for your help

Reason for not tamed 4 hour earlier - Requires level 90 to tame!
This is an EXOTIC beast.
This pet has a special exotic ability which is a COMBAT RES which is very cool!
Enjoy!

Just tamed Red-skin of Portent on Lothar-US, approximately 12AM EST. It was almost at terminus of the trail at Mogu'Shan Palace. The tracks were pointing backward, I confirmed this. Tame was easy once I got ahead of the tracks: flare, freeze trap and tame. With the casting speed of tame down to a miniscule time it is quite simple. I think now is the time to get these, while the bulk of hunters are still leveling. Not that I have any room in my stable. Sigh.

Just tamed Portent on US-Caelestrasz at 9:40 pm server time. I discovered him by complete fluke, at the time my mini map had the gold arrow point to a quest location but i didn't have any tracked quests so i followed it before it disappeared. I was wondering what the hell was going on when i noticed something on the ground the 'Dusty Tracks'.
At this point i remembered a friend telling me about the new rare hunter pets and that you had to follow the tracks and use flare to see the pet. so after following the tracks for a bit i reached the end and used flare and sure enough out pops Portent.
Since i was sill in Marksman spec i couldn't tame him at the time. So once i changed spec i followed the tracks again, found him and tamed.
and I wasn't even looking for him =P.

I got very confused when I tried to follow the direction the tracks were facing and then they were despawning. So I followed them as if Portent was walking backwards and right enough I found him, the tracks were just facing the wrong way.
This is the first time I've even seen tracks at all so I don't know if this happens with all of the rares or not.

I've tamed Portent three times now looking for the green version of him, all three times I've tamed him I've just camped him at coords 61,59, its a big open area and it makes it easy to see his footprints as they appear. If you haven't seen his footprints in ~45mins there's a good chance he's not there, it's never taken me longer than 30 minutes of waiting, but next time I'm there I'll let him path all the way around then update this to let you know exactly how long it takes for him to complete his path!
Edit: After camping this spot and timing him it takes him ~45 minutes to get back to this spot (coords 61,59) from the farthest turn-around point. His footprints will fade about 5 minutes after he leaves them (yes, they're still backwards) Also, a cheap way to keep track of him is to hunter mark him, he won't go back into stealth if you use hunter's mark on him.

I just tamed the Green version of him at 11:30pm CST Garona Server.
He shows up as an elite mob and not a rare spawn. Tracks only seen by hunters as my Pally friend could not see it. The tracks are backwards and it will despawn after some time. I found mine around the 76,25 area. He was turning around so I saw 2 sets of tracks going in different directions.
That being said since he is not a rare elite, (silver dragon) I dont know if he has a long spawn time or maybe only seems long because hunters have to spot the tracks

I hovered around 57.8, 60.8 and saw his tracks in 10 min... got lucky I guess, picked him as green! Once I saw his tracks I flared pretty far ahead and he popped up and I marked him. No Damage like everyone else said and the tracks do point backwards from the direction he is traveling. Thanks to all the good comments on this thread, it made it easy.

Note that it is not necessary to complete the intro quests at the Golden Pagoda in order to tame Portent. HOWEVER, it is
extremely
recommended, unless you catch him outside of the Emperor's approach area. If you haven't done the Golden Pagoda quests, Portent and his tracks will disappear when you are around the Emperor's Approach. (If you can receive Golden Lotus dailies there, you're in the right phase.)
And as always, you'll find him in the opposite direction of his tracks.
P.S. The first time is always the hardest. Once you get the hang of following his tracks, he's really easy to tame again and again. Good hunting!

After taming, when this guy is stealthed with the Hunter ability
Camouflage
it appears almost completely invisible. Only its shadow and a few of the brightest highlights on its mane and such appear in the glassy camouflage effect. This may change in future patches or hotfixes however, as
Ghostcrawler
had a similar "problem" with the spell when he was first available.

For this tame I had some help from a hunter on the other faction who pointed me in the direction of the fresh tracks when it was obvious I'd lost them. She then shot off flares in front of mine for better coverage. I mention this because it's worth noting another hunter's flare will make him visible to
all hunters regardless of faction.
Her flare hit Portent, I shot him with hunter's mark and tamed.
Added: Portent's respawn timer sits at exactly 2 hours from his last tame. After tracking him 6 or 7 times before getting all four colors, only once did he spawn to the west of the Emperor's Approach. If you're not phased into the Golden Lotus quests, hover around 61,61 so if he's heading into the phased area you have time to snatch him. Otherwise, he will take roughly 45 minutes to path the entire western half of the zone.

Tamed the red version. I can pretty much assure you that you HAVE to open the Golden Lotus dailies to not be phased for Portent. I couldn't see ANYTHING until I opened the Golden Lotus dailies. This helped a lot. After opening them, I tamed him in about 15 minutes.
About 45~ mins later I tamed a purple version of Portent. I'm planning on abandoning purple for Green/Blue because those are the colors I'm really wanting. I'm guessing green is the rarest since it is the best looking.
Edit: Have since tamed red, blue, and green. Probably releasing red soon since of all the colors blue is the most unique.

Just tamed the blue one on Earthen Ring - US; close to Mogushan Palace, at 4:03 EST.
Tips that helped -
Follow prints backwards, use flares when you see them starting to appear, and mount up when they start appearing and when you get close to where they end, start using flare alot in the direction they appear.
Also, indeed, if you hit him with Hunter's Mark, he won't go invisible again to the mark wears off, which helps track him.
If you run ahead several paces, then start taming him, he will hopefully be tame by the time he reaches you or a little past you.
Note: he is smaller than I expected before taming so I almost didn't notice him; also he does not aggro on taming, just keeps walking.
As a note! When tou hit a point where he's turned around you can tell because there will be two tracks facing one another in different directions. (that confused the heck out of me, lol!)
Also, annoyingly, he paths through a few areas with aggros (wolves, spiders, Mogu) so keep a pet with you till you hit a point when you actually de-invisible him, dismiss pet, then work on taming.
Now that I know? I'm going to come back later to try and get the purple one. <3

Just tamed him on Thunderhorn @ 4:25am server time.
It must be my lucky night. I have already tamed the pink crane, ran into hexapos in Dread and now just got Portent. I only took a quick look at his spawn point and his route. I was headed towards that way anyways looked down and saw his prints. I then followed them all the way to the side of Mogushan Palace but it started to go back the other way, threw down a few flares and it was there. Unfortunately I had way too many things out of place so it took me a few minutes to actually get it. I finally tamed it at 69,26.
Happy Hunting...

Oct. 29th Tamed him on the Bloodscalp server. I can confirm that Portent's footprints are still backwards and it was confusing for me to find him when it did happen, when I realized they were backwards I just followed until I found him close to the Summer Fields where I tamed him.
Tamed him from a distance, he was grayed out to me but I was still capable of the tame. Taming from a distance is as said one that does not cause him to aggro on you so he will continue on his path.
So to sum it up basically if you see his footprints follow them backwards until you see them stop then cast flare in front of the last one and you should see him. Happy hunting Hunters.

I can confirm that his tracks are phasing. You will have to do the first set of quests (temple of white tiger->opening the gate->first few golden lotus quests) to be able to see them.
The moment i handed in the last one, and gotten into the phase where the daily quests are, Portent was tamed within 2 mins. I got the red one.

Figured I'd sum up the 50+ redundant comments on this page.
Note that it is not necessary to complete the intro quests at the Golden Pagoda in order to tame Portent, although his tracks will disappear around Emperor's Approach if you haven't, so it would be wise to do so.
Respawn timer is 1-2 hours, so it's a fairly easy tame and he's hardly a rare.
He only has one spawn point, by Mogu'shan Palace, the eastern most coord on Wowhead's map (77.2, 26.2).
He spawns in 4 different colors (green, red, purple, and blue). He's technically not a unique pet. The 4 Quilen bosses in Mogu'Shan Vaults are all listed as tameable, although you can't tame any of them at level 90 due to level restrictions. However, Portent will spawn in one of the four different skins of the bosses, of the exact same model.
To find him you must be a hunter. He'll leave tracks called dusty tracks.
For now you must follow these tracks backwards, although that could be changed soon. If you see the toes pointing north, then go south.
Follow the tracks in the direction they're headed (fixed in patch 5.1)
Once the tracks abruptly end, throw down a flare and Portent should appear. From there it's a simple tame and he hits like a kitten.
He cannot be damaged whatsoever by anyone, so don't worry about some raging nerd killing him on you during the tame!
He's an exotic pet, so you must be a Beast Mastery specced hunter to tame.
This is the only rare spawn Quilen (noted for their
ability as well as
).
Edit: Removed outdated information
Thank you all so much for my first green comment! Hope I was able to help some of you out. :)

Got him in purple :) You have to complete the first few golden lotus quests to get him easily because of phasing, but that's only the central part of the vale that's phased. so you could still get him by mogu'shan palace with no problem. I tracked him up until about 71,22. then I just flew to his spawning point (77,26-ish) and camped him for maybe 45 seconds, since it's a bit more interesting than just plain camping. I also kept a flare up constantly for those 45 seconds. He's a really easy tame, and I got purple first try!
Happy hunting everyone!

Having just turned 90 on my hunter, I went to the Vale of Eternal Blossoms to find and tame Portent. I wasn't sure, as I hadn't checked on Wowhead as to whether I could see his tracks without having opened the dailies. However, in the Summer Fields, the area east of the Golden Pagoda, I saw the tracks and was able to tame him. He was the deep purple color.
Some parts of his path may be phased, but not all. Definitely check the eastern part of the zone if the dailies are not open yet.

K, just finnaly tamed him. Took like an hour. For me he didn't "phase in" no matter what I did (and I tracked him all the way through the valley and then back again, always the same). The moment he walked out of the flare he dissapeared, and I had to wait for cooldown and try again. First I finished the taming, but he just dissapeared. So I had to track him down again from scratch for some reason. Then freeze trap him before he left the flare circle. Oh, and I couldn't "target" him either, dunno why. So he completely dissapeard when leaving the flares.
But by the second freeze-taming attempt it worked, so now I have a green one. Worth it? Not sure. :p

when you find him, if you have glyph of marked for death, hit him a few times to automatically tag him with hunters mark. he wont hit back if you are at a distance(for some reason when i tried to just use hunters mark alone on him it wouldn't let me). once marked, he will no longer disappear, and you will no longer need to use a flare. at a distance he will not attack you. so its a free tame. i pulled the red one using this method. if you happen to lose him, he actually doubles back on his own paw prints. so wait at the end of his path and when you see and opposite facing track next to an old one , you got him!

Edit: Finally caught the red one, the same day, at night! Easy enough to catch, footprints are very easily seen while flying.

This might be a bit long but heres my Portent story!
As soon as I got my hunter to MoP levels I always wanted a quilen, I ended up with 4/5 pets being Quilen. As I was looking for the final edditon to my Quilen army on Petopia and set my heart out to Green Portent.(Only green Quilen in game thats tamable) So right when I hit 90 I went on the hunter tracking challenge for a 2nd time after getting Savage. I looked from 12 at night til' 2 in the morning and went to bed. I just randomly wanted to go look for him about 10 minutes ago and went after him.
I went up by Mogu'shan Palace to begin my journey, and I immediately saw tracks. My heart started pounding. I followed the tracks all the way up to the lake a little past The Golden Pagoda and thought I had lost his tracks, sad as I was I refused to give up. A few seconds later right infront of my spawned a Dusty Track! I set out a flare.. I died, it was him! Oh, and take a guess which color? GREEN!

A dwarf hunter named Howard on Icecrown-US was calling out an offer to help tame purple Portent as he was already following him, so I spoke up.
He had started the dailies while I hadn't, so he had me follow his party marker all the way east until we phased into each other at around (55-56, 60), away from quest hubs and what not. I'd almost given up on the phase working, but he encouraged me to be patient. After some instruction and tense fumbling with my flare and hunter's mark, I managed to tame him!

I found the paw prints easily and once I caught up with them I'd drop a flare. shoot once and he didn't attack or take damage. Just kept walking..... So I tried again 2-3 times for the same result. Free traps didn't work. He would just walk out of range of the flare and vanish.
I finally dropped the flare ahead of him used hunters mark and hit tame. just before he got away again i got the tame and he was mine!

Spec into BM then put the following spells somewhere you can access them quickly:
Tame Beast, Freezing Trap, Feign Death, Flare, and a flying mount.
Once you've found him with the Flare, even if you manage to start the tame he can wander out of range or disappear altogether. Hence use the Freezing Trap to hold him in place while you tame. Slowing trap does work (i.e. it slows him) but he can still disappear. FD and the flying mount are for getting out of combat quickly if he wanders into the path of hostile mobs... which he will do, annoyingly often.
To repeat earlier comments, footprints now point in the correct direction but beware he can loop back on himself so make sure you keep an eye on which way he is going as you will sometimes see footprints pointing both ways.

As of today, his tracks are no longer backwards.
I tried tracking them backwards and they were disappearing! So I turned around and followed them normally. Now I am the proud owner of a blue Portent! Heh.

I was trying to catch Portent today. Saw his tracks many times, followed them backwards til I saw the last one, and they kept disappearing... Then read some of the comments on here and saw people had the same issue and someone said they followed his tracks forward and caught him. I'm really confused cause his last track going backwards disappears now, and it's disappearing forward. I keep using flare whenever the track disappears in the area and he's not coming up...

I tamed a Portent today, took about 20 minutes in all, most of those were spent tracking the blighter!
In the end I managed to get about 2 prints in front of him, used flare a few times before spamming
concussive shot
a few times, I then just stood behind him and hit
Tame Beast
. He continues walking away and I get a message saying I
'need to be in front of target'
but as I was was close behind him I managed to Tame him before he went out of range.
No trapping, no trickery, by far the easiest 'Exotic' I have tamed. And as you can see from my screenshot I don't have many spells on my toolbar, in fact BM is my secondary spec and I haven't even set any talents yet!

My hunter hit 90 just the other day and I immediately started the dailies in the area so that I could always see his tracks and not loose them to phasing issues. So far I have tamed the red version but wanted the purple or blue so I have been coming back and re-tracking him every couple of hours. So far I have seen red and green, and only just found the purple one minutes ago. I can tell you that the purple version, so far, moves the quickest across the map, he was also smaller than the red and green ones (but the sized adjusts once he's tamed anyway). I think it would be safe to assume that the blue moves quickly as well. So if you are on the hunt for either of these colors be quick on your hunters mark or he will quickly move out of your flare and you will miss him, making you run to catch up and spam flare some more. Happy Hunting! I hope this helps!

An easy tame. Flare ahead of his latest track, mark him, freezing trap, and tame; just a clarification: Portent's tracks DO NOT DISAPPEAR after he is tamed/killed. If you see his tracks but cannot find him, he is probably already tamed.
Good luck :)

I just found and tamed the green one, dunno if anyone's said this yet, didn't read all the comments (You read through all 80 of them) but he can spawn on either side of his path, so if you don't see him on one end check the other. Also, his tracks go the correct direction now, so you can follow them as needed. If you get to the end and don't see any tracks, wait a few seconds to make sure he's around, he'll keep putting tracks down.

I just found Portent, after marking the entire path on my map (he was at the last place I marked LOL). His track stands out well, so you can fly a little above the ground and still be fine. When you use flare, do it a bit ahead of the last track you find, and hunter's mark him quick - that way you don't have to worry about flaring again.
I just started tame beast immediately, he didn't attack or anything, just kept walking away peacefully. I got the purple guy and named him Reginald.
Happy Hunting!

Followed him all the way to Ruins of Guo-Lai and tamed at approx. 1:55PM after using a flare to bring him out of stealth. Purple quilen, very cute. Coords, 27, 41. Good luck hunters!

Okay, so I can definitely, say without a shadow of a doubt, that Portent is no way more than an hour spawn. I've spent the last 5 hours or so camping him (trying to get the purple). He seems to always start his spawn near Mogu'shan Palace, and I have intercepted them every time by the nearby waters. I've been averaging 2-3 spawns an hour, every time. Seems like his color variations has no specific order, as I've gotten 3 blues in a row, every other colour, and no purples.
From what I've seen, he always starts his path at corner of Mogu'shan Palace. I'm on a heavily populated server and I've had no problem with any other campers. Just hope I can get a Purple one eventually!
*edit*
Finally got the Purple one. I started re camping him again right after this post. Post is 26 minutes old, to further confirm his under hour spawn time. Stay parked near Mogu'shan Palace/Horde Shrine, and you will have him before he even has a chance to make more than 10 steps.

Tamed the green Quilen, Portent, on Thorium Brotherhood around 9:00 AM. Not sure the relevance of the time and date, but c'est la vie. I do, however, have information I think would be useful.
Steps
Check the map shown above and select a place to start searching for tracks. They ARE easy to find from the air.
Once you find the a dusty track, get a little closer to see which direction the tracks are pointing. As of my own tame date, the paw prints DO face the proper direction. Just fly the same way they are going.
When you start to notice that the tracks are appearing as you are following them, that is when you know you have found him. A carefully placed flare will bring him out of hiding.
Now that you've got Portent in your sights, quickly tag him with a Hunter's Mark so you don't lose him. He goes back into stealth if not marked and will stay that way until you flare him again.
Follow him to an area with no hostile mobs and tame away.
Personal Note
My main reason for wanting a Quilen was their battle res ability. I am a huge fan of spirit beasts, and I have all of the ones available in the game right now. Only thing better than a pet that can heal you is a pet that can revive your fallen allies, especially if your guild doesn't have mass res.
When I found Portent, he was grey, as though someone else had already found him and started taming or attacking him. I figured, what the heck, and I set myself up anyway. I followed him to a clear area so as not to be disturbed by other mobs, and I set myself an ice trap. I began to tame him, and to my surprise I was not only able to tame him, he did not attack me. I watched him continue on his slow walking path with my little hearts over his head until my channel was finished and he was mine.
Happy hunting!

My Portent hunt:
A few things:
1: Portent is stealth, and you need to cast a flare to make him visible.
2: Follow the Dusty tracks to find him.
3: Portent is an exotic creature, so you need to be BM to tame him.
4: Portent will not fight back, when you tame him, nor if you attack him. So no worries, just throw a hunters mark on him and start taming, no precautions necessary.
1st: Blue color, I killed him (Low populated server, nobody to tame him and thanks to blizzard I only have stable slots for one more pet, and that is gonna be the green one ;)) He is hard to kill indeed, he doesn't fight back just continues down his path, but he has a lot hp. I found him at Mogu'shan palace where he had just made a 180 degree turn around, and killed him around The summer fields, nuking him the whole way.
2nd: Red color, found around the lake in front of Mogu'shan palace. I tamed him and released him (So much easier than actually killing him). He does spawn at Autumnshade Ridge (14.4, 27.6) and
not only
at Mogu'shan palace (76.4, 26.2) like someone has reported. If you have NOT done the quests,
he and his tracks
will phase out at Emperor's approach.
3rd: 18:33 Red color, spawned at Mogu'shan palace (Tame and abandon) Sorry I don't have the times for the two previous ones.
4th: (1 Hour and 1 min later) 19:34 Blue color, spawned at Mogu'shan palace.
5th: (33 minutes later) 20:07 Blue color, spawned at Mogu'shan palace. It takes Portent 32 minutes to go trough the whole valley, so if you fly between the 2 different spawn points, you can suddenly find prints in the middle of the route.
6th: (45 minutes later) 20:52 Purple color, spawned at Mogu'shan palace. (Getting kinda tired of getting the "wrong" color now ;)) 20:56 the newest print has disappeared, so they don't stay on the ground for very long. They do fade out, but in a matter of seconds *puff*
7th: (1 hour and 1 minute later) 21:53 Purple color, spawned at mogu'shan palace.
8th: (36 minutes later) 22:29 Green color! Finally :D Also spawned at Mogu'shan palace.
So it took around 6-7 hours (think I started around 16) to get the desired color. He is indeed an easy tame, since he doesn't fight back (No need for special glyphs, speed pots or traps). Just tag him with a hunters mark, run close to him, cast tame and he is yours.
If you havn't done any quests in Vale of Eternal Blossoms (like me) there will be absolutely no unfriendly mobs around you, only neutrals, so the surroundings will pose no threat against your mission.
Have fun, and good luck!

Got him yesterday - two actually, the red and purple. I read a few people here saying he can walk out of range and they have to try and tame over again. A little advice, drop your flare, target him and then run ahead of him and tame him while he is walking towards you. Even as he walks past, it won't break your tame, your toon just turns with him.
Prints are facing the right direction too. Got both by Mogushan Palace.

I saw his tracks today (6 APR 13) and followed them. He moves fairly fast, so you have to keep an eye for the next track and then throw a flare about 15 feet ahead of that.
I was unable to tame him, it stated he was un-tamable. Killing him took some time, and he did not attack back. Although his HP is somewhat low, seems his armor is high. He did not drop anything.
I am not sure if this was an error, but was very disappointed that I was unable to tame him.

I just tamed the blue Portent on Aggramar 21:20 realm time. I have not completed the quests in the area, but aside from having to fly around in a panic a couple of times when I thought I had lost the tracks it wasn't bad at all.
I followed the tracks using aspect of the Cheetah, they started at Mogushan Palace, right up in the corner, to the left as you face it. I followed and flared periodically until I definitely ran out of tracks... that last flare showed me the tail end of Portent disappearing. I kept calm and ran a little further then flared again, this time he showed up and I hit hunters mark and tame beast in quick succession. I did panic a bit and run after him, but with glyph of tame beast, once yo ucan see him yo uhave time to tame ever though he looks like he's walking away.

look close, it's a paw print, you have have to catch up to where they end THEN throw a flare.
you will need glyph of tame beast.
throw flare > be ready with concussive shot> immediately tame.
*note concussive shot slows him enough for you to tame him before he returns to stealth

*sighs* I have to share a personal mishap. As I am always on the look out for hunters pets I had googled to see what would be in the area. I saw this beautiful beast and thought how amazing it would be to have such a magnificent creature running next to me.
I set out on an adventure to capture one and was easily successful. I looked further and realized there is the same one in different colors, including my all time favorite green! AND it turns out, the green version is also a rare. I followed the mapping of his route, painfully tracking through some tough areas. I had found his tracks once and then they disappeared! I retraced the route, found them again and was able to use my flare and locate him. In all my excitement I forgot to mark him. I kept pressing on, flared again and this time used my hunters mark. I abandoned my red version and immediately went to tame him. And then the mishap... I am a level 87 hunter and this beautiful rare beast is level 90! *cries* I hadn't even caught that minor little detail. Needless to say I mounted up and made my way back to recapture the original red one I had. The upside to all of this is I will be 90 and I will be back for him! Happy hunting!

Here's some information that is not on here yet. No one else can see him from your flare. I don't know if this is for all the invisa-pets but I would assume so.
I have all these and was helping a fellow guildie get one. I flared it, but they couldn't see it. They had to flare it themselves. Even in group I marked it and they couldn't see it. The flared it and it went invisible to me... So no worries about someone killing your mark!

Some of you may be wondering where Portent walk now that a big chunk of his path is changed in 5.3. I drew up a crappy map, but new users can't post links. Bummer!
I followed him to see where he goes, and he walks along a path from 69.89, 54.56, forward, and up and around the cliff path along the Big Blossom Excavation, toward the Valley of Four Winds. He walks around there, then goes over a huge rock at 60.35, 62.77, before resuming his normal path.
If you like to camp and just keep casting flare, that's a great place to do it.

No idea if someone mentioned this before, but if you just hit 90 and didn't do the starting Golden Lotus quests, you'll might have a hard time spotting his tracks, since he follows a path in a different phase. I saw his tracks around the big digsite and then they suddenly disappeared. I decided to do the quests and I found him again around Guo'lai a bit later.
No idea how long is the phased part of his route tho .)

I found that every time I tamed Portent, he would appear 45min - 1hr later at the same spot, traveling in the same direction, as the one I previouslt tamed. Tamed all four in one night. The times were 11:30pm (USA, NY time), 12:22am, 1:12am, and 2:03am. All tamed at exactly 65.2 62.9. I found it the best place as you can see three tracks if you scroll your view all the way out and look down. Showed up in the colors Blue, then Green, then Red, then Purple.
Make sure once you spot him in the flare, you HUNTERS MARK him or as soon as he walks out of the flare you can no longer see him.

so, ive seen a lot of post about needing the glyph of taming to tame him before he runs out of the flare, and using the concussive shot to slow him down.
unfortunately none of that is needed.
i tamed him 2 different colors tonight without any of that.
all that is needed is to find his tracks. flare in front of the last track and wait for him to appear.
target portent and put your hunters mark on him. he no longer stealths,
as per the hunters mark ability targets can always be seen while marked. seriously, this is a hunter pet, i thought any experienced hunter would have thought of that by now. or did we all forget what hunters mark does as its now just a secondary effect from our main attacks now we dont pay attention to it anymore? some abilities are more useful then just dps buffs!
any ways, i followed him for the full 5 minutes to see if at some point it went back into stealth and it does not.
no one else can see him or your hunters mark so there is no worry of pointing him out for others to kill or interrupt you tame.

To anyone wanting one of the other color variations of this pet. There is a way to have the one you tame change to one of the other colors.
1. Take your pet to one of the caves just outside Orgrimmar such as Skull Rock.
2. Have your pet kill the guys inside until it gets the transformation buff that turns it into the demon form of a warlock.
3. Go back outside while your pet still has the buff and mount up on your flying mount causing him to despawn. (he must still have the demon form buff on)
4. Dismount and your pet should spawn beside you with one of the different color options.
I've tested this a few times now and it works perfectly for me.

Just tamed him on Earthen Ring at 7:00pm server time, location 60.63.
Update: He followed the same path and crossed the same area 45 minutes later. Pet was the same color second time around. I'm going to hang out and see if he pats back through in 45 minutes again. Maybe I can get another color this time =) Just a thought.. he came from the same direction as the first one... odd. I have not read all the posts so maybe I missed something.
3rd tame was at 8:38 server (ER), close to the same place. Different color this time, so the 45-60 minute timer seems to be correct.

Just found his little footprints along the cliff path of the Big Blossom Excavation coords 65.80, 60.21..had to follow them for a good little while as some are hard to see! Make sure to Mark as soon as he becomes visible from your flare because he disappears rather quickly. He didn't attack at all during taming just kept poking along.. I was lucky enough to get the purple one on the first try (the one I wanted) but the hunt is so intriguing I think I will go for the red and green as well, especially since they stand out more!

Since the Vale changed, I gathered the waypoints of his tracks to create a path.
Here's the TomTom commands. Use an addon called
PASTE
.
(If you don't want the markers to disappear when you get close to them, go into the TomTom settings and set "Clear waypoint distance" to "0".)
Here's an image of the route.
EDIT: I had to update the waypoints because there were too many characters for one comment.
You must be in Vale of Eternal Blossoms
BEFORE
you paste these waypoints!
Zooming all the way in on your minimap makes it much easier to see your location with the markers.

After two attempts i finally got him, green. it was the least color i wanted, was preferring red or blue.
the first attempt i saw him with flare but i forgot to mark him and lost him
then other hunter came and tamed him.
i didn't give up, waited about 2 hours and started to look for him again
and i found him. green again.
this time i put Hunter Mark on him and he couldn't be stealth again, so i tamed him pretty easily :)
now i will look again untill i will get the color i desire ^^

This is a easy rare to find, just follow the "Dusty Tracks". Only a hunter can see this pet. Throw out your Flare while following the tracks until you find it, apply Hunter's Mark and tame. Portent will keep walking, best to be a bit ahead of it to tame it. Color seems to be random, took me about 2 weeks to find all 4 colors; Red, Blue, Green, and Purple. These pets have a unique talent, they can battle rez!

Just got the blue one today (22 Jan 14). Tracks face the correct direction. I was unable to attack or mark him. A hunter friend was able to see him when I had a flare down and I was able to see him when she tossed down a flare. To tame him without being able to mark him, I had to drop a flare and have my friend drop one right after mine. This trick barely gave me enough time to tame him. Only reason I can figure I couldn't attack or mark him is because he was grayed out as if someone else had already tagged him. Otherwise, maybe a bug.....

Quick and dirty on this beast:
1. It comes in four colors: Blue, Green, Purple and Red. Spawn color is completely random.
2. Spawn time is reported to be 1 to 2 hours, but for me, it's been spawning pretty much every hour.
3. A flare placed in it's path will enable you to see him. Once you place your Hunter's Mark on it, it will remain visible.
4. It will not fight back during the tame; it'll keep walking. So you'll have to get in front of it so you can complete the tame before it gets out of range.
5. Easiest spot to tame is in the area(s) to the south and west of the Shrine of the Seven Stars. It's clear of hostile NPC's and there's a narrow uphill/downhill path that it takes so it's easy to know exactly where to place the flare. If you try to tame it in the western part of the Vale, you run the risk of being interrupted by hostile NPC's.
So far I've tamed all colors except the blue one, which just so happens to be the one I want the most. It figures......lol.
Hope this helps!

You must mark him (hunter's mark) or he will keep walking and disappear on you !
No need for ice trap- he is an elite but he does not attack you while you tame him.
Confirm that the dusty tracks are now facing the correct way- not backwards anymore. Good luck !

Today's date is Feb, 7th, 2014. I've tamed Portent 5 times over the past 2 days. His respawn time ranged from 30 minutes to 1 hour. His tracks remain for 5 minutes after he has been tamed.

I have been hunting this beauty for about a week. I have found his tracks but here's where I am fuzzy on what happens next. When and where do I put the flare down to see him? I have been standing right on where the last track is visible, then I put my flares down in a cone like fashion out from there. No such luck, he just doesn't show up. I created a macro to possibly target him, but that doesn't appear to work either. Any suggestions?

I got two so far. The way I did it is find a spot where she double backs. At the North East part of the Vale of Eternal Blossoms (just North West of the Mogu'shan Palace) at coords 71.4 22.3 is a great place. There are no baddies to bother you. Portent will walk past this spot towards the palace, turn around, and walk back through the same spot. I camped it until I saw a track appear coming from the West. I started popping flares on one track until she came back. Once she appears, mark her with Hunter's Mark. Then get ahead of her a little bit because she will continue walking through the tame and you don't want her to get out of range.
Respawn time is around an hour so you aint gotta worry about a marathon camp that runs into days. Once you get these mechanics down it's one of the easiest tames of the game.

Easiest way to tame him for me was to set up shop at 74, 24.6 ... cast flare whenever off cd, with freezing trap placed just off the flare to the west (on the way to the 71.4, 22 point). Also added Portent to NPC scan (id 50843) and made a macro as follows:
/target Portent
/Cast Hunter's Mark
since I'm a little slow on my dinky little touchpad, put it right beside my flare button on my bar so my cursor was already close to that spot.
As soon as he spawned npc scan went off and he was frozen, hit macro so he couldn't stealth away from me, and tamed his arse with the Glyph of Tame beast.
Got Glimmer the same way, I assume it will work for most of these guys :D Was happy to have something unique that's not such a challenge to tame in terms of competition for them.

The path on the map is accurate, and when he gets to the end, in the west, he turns around and walks all the way back ... some of his tracks overlap on his way back. I sat up and watched.

My guildmates and I have been trying to figure out how the Mists of Pandaria rares such as
噩兆
would best be tamed in Warlords of Draenor with the announcement of the removal of the
猎人印记
ability. I had not been able to find anyone discussing this in all of the comments on
猎人印记
nor on the rares comments. Thankfully, I recently was invited to test the beta and while I cannot find any Hunter ability that keeps the target from stealthing I was able to tame
噩兆
on the beta (version 6.0.1.18566). It took a few tries, but by using the
照明弹
ahead of the tracks and a quick
thrown out at his feet I was able to tame him. I also had the
applied. The loss of
猎人印记
makes it slightly more difficult (5-6 attempts for me to get used to it), but it is still doable.
So for those lower level hunters, unless Blizzard also removes freezing trap in their ability pruning or makes some other change not announced currently Portent is still tamable when you get leveled up enough to track him down.
Note: This comment is not regarding the current live version of the game (5.4.8.18414), but rather the Warlords of Draenor beta (version 6.0.1.18566) which is still under development with frequent changes.
Edited to add spell / npc links.

Tamed all four colors of Portent today. It appears that he respawns about every 40 minutes now, compared to the comments that it was more like 1-2 hours. I first found the green one at around 1100 am, blue just after 1200 pm, red around 215 pm, another red at 900 pm that a guild member tamed and finally purple at 945 pm.

Note for Hunter Tamers as of the 6.0 patch. Freezing Trap worked for me. I spent a half hour chasing him, flare->Concussive Shot->Tame Beast and never once finished. I tried Freezing Trap on a whim and it locked him down. Easy peasy tame after that.
Tamed on Ravencrest @ 6:54pm realm time.

I can confirm 40 min to 60 min respawn timer (Fizzcrank). However, I had him spawn twice on the furthest east side and once near furthest west side before I got the color I wanted. So beware, he doesn't always respawn on the same side you got him at.

As of patch 6.0
After a few attempts to capture this guy unsuccessfully with the common techniques (flare+hunter's mark+tame), i realized that
hunter's mark has been removed
for BM (which really does not make sense for me). So now even if you are able to locate Portent and launch a flare, he would quickly move out of the range of the flare and fade again before you successfully tame him.
Luckily I read one very useful comment from someone who played in beta and figure out a very efficient way to help me tame 4 of stealthed pets in one night:
- have the minor glyph 'Glyph of Tame Beast' active (without this you would not be able to do it in time)
- locate where the last footprint is and immediately place an Ice Trap a few yards ahead (suggested by beta player)
- launch flare and tame as soon as you see him
Most hunters might have already tamed him/have this figure out by this time but i hope this would be helpful for those still trying to and don't know how without hunter's mark. =)

Ok I just got this. Ran into a couple of problems but figured out how to solve them.
#1 spec wyrven Sting. I ran into an issue where it was grey and Untameable, friend told me to wyrven sting it and it makes it easier to tame anyways, it also fixed the grey issue.
#2 The path on wowhead is correct but it is pretty difficult to follow at times. There is also one other thing, when it reaches the end of the path, it will start doubling back slowly. I made the mistake of going to the other side of the map, but if you stick around and work your way backwards you will find it again. This also made me realize that you have to factor in BOTH directions of where the tracks are going. If you just find the prints like I did and assume its going one way you can be wrong, unless you spot a fresh spawn. So you have to follow each trail to the end and determine which direction it's going which can be confusing (maybe a friend can help but I did it alone). When flaring as soon as you see the tracks spawn try to put the flare out a head a bit and hit wyrven if you pop him out of stealth immediately, then you simply tame it. This was pretty intense and challenging for me I liked this gimmick. GL to those of you farming!

Ok..
after patch 6.0.2
, Hunter's Mark is history. So. If you don't use Freezing Trap, you won't be able to stop him long enough for Tame Pet to work.
Believe me, I tried. After 7 failed attempts and a loud scream ..maybe two .. and two days, I wised up, got in front of him and set the trap in the right spot, just by pure dumb luck, since there's no way to know what exact path he'll take.
Good luck!
If anyone has a better idea than Freezing Trap, I'd love to read about it. This type of pet won't be the end of em.
There will be more track and trap taming in the xpac, you can count on it.

Repeating Flare+Binding Shot until I got the timing and spacing right - I managed to bottleneck this beauty in The Emperor's Approach.
Submitted two screenshots (look for author: Remisso) - First is the visual site of capture, and the second is where it is on the map.

I was tracking him as he travelled west to east. As stated without hunters mark this is quite difficult so I decided to use the bottle neck at the south of the Ruins of Guo-Lai (co-ords 27.5, 43.3). As soon as I knew he was close I flew to my position, put down a flare and a trap and as hoped, he walked right into it. If you are tracking him somewhere near to that location, it's a great place to get him as it's narrow and he has no choice but to walk right into your trap.
I tamed the purple one if anyone is interested...

Got 3 of the 4 in less than 24 hours so he's actually pretty easy to tame. Now that hunters mark is gone though the easiest way I found was to throw a freezing trap after I throw the flare when I know he's there. It takes a few tries but freezes the entire tame. Plus I have some guildies that are looking as well and even when flare fades he stays frozen in spot most of the time it seems. Paw prints are hard to spot at first but after a few spots you start to notice where they are. Loving the colors on him, hardest part I'm having now is deciding which one I want to use first!

respawn time is now significantly less than it was in MoP. i killed him maybe 1 hr ago or less and his tracks are back at the spawn location. this is in draenor expac
also just found out, since we dont have hunters mark anymore, you have to freezing trap him while he is visible with flare. make sure you flare, trap, tame all at the same time; but take note, he will stay trapped even while invisible so just throw another flare down. also you need to trap because he will continue walking even if you do damage or start taming. eventually he will get out of range or go invisible again.

Finally got him...and the red phase one I wanted too!
Above all, I counsel patience. It took me several days of searching, waiting, and trying different methods. Originally, I started haunting the hillside at the 56.61 path point, but with the uneven terrain, I found that Portent would despawn once I Flare'd him and he walked into the ice trap. Almost had him twice at that spot, but this "glitch" made me give up.
Eventually I ended up actively tracking him from that hillside all the way around to the Ruins of Guo-Lai, where I found a PERFECT bottleneck and finally succeeded at 34.33
I'll be submitting a screenshot that's a general overview of the area with a coords and map inset to help pinpoint where I was.
Good luck to all...don't give up! :)

Was able to tame all 4 colors within a 5 day period. Each day I would look at his route and just fly by and see if the track are visible. He path around The Golden Pagida and Mogu’shan Palace gets tricky: cause the tracks either phase, glitch are disappear - harder to see; so I normally jump to the other side, which comes close to bottlenecking him to tame. That had work successfully for the Red one. From my experience taming all four, I think he does switch starting and ending spots, but does go back to each location and starts over. The Green and Purple I tamed on the other side of the path closer to the Five Sister area, and Blue was on the mountains Southeast, and Red at the bottleneck NE near Mogu’shan.
I’m not sure if they changed “tame” but it seems its now channel instead of just being 10 secs, and for this pet its tricky cause he will move fast through the flare and break the day. It’s almost like he needs a 3 sec tame or good luck. I have to start the tame right as he came visible or it breaks by the time he gets half way through the flare. With hunters mark gone, its hard to keep him visible. Setting a fire or ice trap around the last print helps to figure out if he moves left or right and dropping a flare right when the trap goes off, seemed to help me find him as well.
Day 1 - Green - 3/22
Day 2 - Purple - 3/24
Day 3 - Blue - 3/25
Day 4 - Red - 3/26

Portent doesn't attack you when you attempt to tame him and will walk out of your flare range to quickly. Just freeze trap him then tame.

I saw few post mentioning re-spawn time 1-2 hours but in my case it was closer to 1 hour than 2:
- 5:40 (first time i catch one)
- 6:45
- 8:06
- 9:00
- 10:18
- 11: 24
I was waiting for him close to spawn point and every time i tamed one in the same place so looks like one hour of re-spawn is more accurate. How i'm still missing the blue one i will make another try and see if 1 hour was just my RNG or is default re-spawn time.

Hi to all you Hunters,
I would like to update you on getting Portent now that they blew up The Vale. I tried for 30 min, we no longer can place a hunter's mark on the Quilen. Making the tame impossible. He goes past you to fast and your flare stops too soon. I tried everything. The only thing I didn't try was getting the glyph that speeds up your tame ability. But I am too frustrated at this point to try. Following his tracks through all the grey diseased land is complicated and I can just get a non-armored one out of the dungeon. I'm glad I have him on all my other hunters and will just settle for one out of the dungeons now :(

If you're wondering how to tame this pet now that Hunter's Mark and Freezing Trap is gone from BM, one way is Flare first then Binding Shot on top of it. Make sure you're right in it's path.

Hi! I figured I would post as this is Pre-legion by a couple days. I am currently a BM hunter. I have tamed 3 of the color variants of portent and am currently camping for the 4th. I started at 1:45 pm server time on silverhand and was in the middle of his path near the Tu Shen burial ground where the dotted lines end on the right. I quickly saw his pawprints show up and tossed my flair and then used a binding shot on him as soon as he appeared and tamed him.
I then decided why not wait to see how long till the next showed up, stayed in the same spot and sure enough, 45 minutes later paw prints showed up. Different color. Repeated the process and got the next. Each spawn has been between 45minutes to an hour depending on when I saw each print and followed him to watch his path.
I'm posting because his current path is pretty predictable but i have found camping at the rock coordinates 60, 62 is the easiest way to hang out and see him coming up the path. (as well as his paw print shows up on the rock)
For the last 3 spawns he has started on the East side spawn point and made his way around and up the ridge. I am currently waiting for the 4th color variation as the last 3 spawns have all been different colors to see if I was just lucky or if it rotates in a cycle with the colors. I first started with red, then green, then purple.
I hope this helps anyone who is currently hunting this with all the legion updates! Good luck!
EDIT: Can confirm 45 minute spawn timer from time tamed to respawn as long as you stay in the zone or don't join a group with someone who is phased from you. Happy Hunting!

I tamed Portent purple and blue at 30, 32 Next to Ruins of Guo-Lai west side at a choke point between a huge tree and a rock. Put a freeze trap on this exact point and start spamming flares. Once he is trapped select him (Do not shoot him!) and use Tame Beast. You might want to kill the mobs while wating.

Got him today at level 67 without doing anything about the BfA phasing. I found the map accurate for starting spots. I recommend not flying (definitely not on your drake) since it was hard to see the footprints. Once you find one, follow them until you don't see more then throw a flare. If you don't see him, keep an eye out for another footprint ahead and try again. As soon as you see him throw out a freezing trap and tame.
I first saw footprints at 60,62 like another commenter recommended. I threw flares at the end of his path (63,64) but didn't see him then the footprints disappeared. Not sure what the issue was. Luckily maybe 10 minutes later I flew around and saw a new set of footprints starting around 68,57 that went up the path. This time i was able to tame him at 65,60.
