Because every expansion starting zone has to have a giant killer elite that will sneak up on you and crunch you.
That aside, I believe Blizzard could've chosen a better model for their fresh-into-the-sea killer creature - Whale Sharks IRL are actually, as any amateur biologist will tell you, quite harmless creatures that feed on algaes. They're huge, but have as of yet never attacked humans, and pretty much lacks the physical capabilities to do so. A great white or Megalodon would have been a far more accurate in-game representation.

I happened to be in his huge aggro range today. I kited him from the Accursed Reef down to the Holding Pens, before he let me go. Remember that you get 60% increased speed when you run along the bottom, and he's not very fast.
The worst thing about this Fel Reaver v2 is that he makes no noise, doesn't make the ground shake or in any other way tell you when he's coming your way. He'll just

After that event, I grew forever scared of water enemies. This behavior made me dread going into large water areas, the sharks in Jak and Daxter made me scream as they were coming for me and the sea snake thing that appears at the start of Half Life 2 gave me nightmares.

Ok, here's the deal. For some reason this guy evades on you if you get farther than 20 yards from him while you have aggro. If there are others on his aggro table, he'll turn and instagib them before resetting. This is likely related to the fact that unless you're within 20 yards of him, you get a "Target not in line of sight" error when you try to cast on him. This still provides an opportunity for kiting. It just tends to be very nerve-wracking. He only uses his melee abilities if you're within 5 yards of him. He won't reset unless you're farther than 20 yards from him. Thus so long as you stay within that margin, you can kite him indefinitely.
I and four other members of my guild killed him last night using this precise technique. I, a warlock (destro), got within 20 yards of him and opened fire with Immolate. I kept Curse of Doom and Corruption up on him constantly and used Fel Flame as a filler to keep Immolate up while I kited. After about 2 minutes of generating threat, the reset of my group opened up with cautious dps. Took 20 minutes and a few seconds to kill him, kiting him in a giant circle around Nespirah (don't get too close, it can cause him to evade!). I used IceHUD's range-check function, which gives your range to the target in 5-yards increments. The 15 yards range between instant death and evade feels a hell of a lot more narrow than that, so be careful. I kept him in the '10-15' range most of the time, moving in or out to keep it there. He moves
very
slowly, so don't go overboard on your movement. Good luck!

Thought i should share my experience of whaleshark. Me and five or so guildies were questing in the area killing Naga and whatnot, when i noticed a small yellow dot on the corner of my minimap. I began to swim over to mine said dot when i noticed it... whaleshark! With his big funny mouth and little beady eyes! I called the guys over and we went about discussing if we could take it or not. We decided tank'n'spank was the best course of action and off i charged, in full gnomish glory! Devistate hit 6k, than 8 and sheild slam for 10k! Rawr! All whaleshark did was blink. It was that blink that hit me so hard it disbanded my guild and deleted my account. Curse, vent, every expansion uninstalled. Even the desktop icon and my background of chromie gone. I had to log onto the guild forum to find out what was going on! It turns out the rest of the guild tried to run but to no avail, whaleshark opened his huge mouth and hit them all with 560k effortlessly. Anyone wearing metal had his armour shattered, the casters were stripped naked and one druid had his tree form turned into tooth picks. It was terrible. And as if that wasnt enough, whaleshark grew a hand and reached through my screen, flipped me off, inapropriatly touched my girlfriend and punched my cat. Im still traumatised. Apparently everynight before he goes to bed, Chuck Norris checks under his bed for whaleshark...

Extremely easy kite as a Hunter with Aspect of the Fox.
You'll want to download a range check addon and stay in-between 5-20 yards of him. Any more and he'll evade and reset; any less and he'll one shot you.
It took me around 20 minutes to kill him, but kiting him through Vashj'ir will likely draw attention to yourself and thus, will have people helping you for fun.

A few things learned from unsuccessful attempts to kill the whale shark.
- It has a very buggy hitbox. It is possible, in open water, to have issues with 'Not in line of sight'.
- It fears. The fear never actually struck and effected me; this may be a bug.
- It is slow. I was able to swim backwards without ever having to worry about it catching up to me. Strafing or turning to get around the shore could get it dangerously near, though.

Lol I can honestly say I've killed the whale shark and lived! This is my "whale tail" :P
*We were able to get the acheivement with only a 9 person raid. Majority of the raid was 85 with only three others who were 84 and 83 I was playing as a spriest.*
My friend who is a DK at the time had 178k heath at 85 tanked him. The whale shark actually one shot him the first time around. The second time around we were able to get a bit of his heath down.
Third time around was the charm. My friend started to kite him thru Vashj'ir. He had to stay out of melee range to avoid being one-shotted and was only able to use his taunts to keep aggro. Once he had enough threat. We were able to finally start dpsing him. We still had to watch our threat. It took awhile for us to start taking down his life. My DK friend ended up kiteing the Whale Shark thru the Kepthar Forrest. We had the shark down to i think 20% when we started gaining the attention of ppl questing in the area. We popped bloodlust and with the help of ppl outside the raid including the Alliance we were finally able to defeat the Whale Shark and claimed prize to the achievement "From Hell's Heart I stab at Thee"!
A totally epic and fun acheivement to have :D

Killed it last night with 3 people, a DK, a priest, and an elemental Shaman (me).
Kiting is the only way, he one-shots anything and everything. You can dodge his attacks if you're very lucky.
The DK was in blood stance and would taunt and throw dots on the fish to keep agro up. He'd swim at what we figured was close to the maximum range before he evades.
The priest and I would DOT and cast as many spells as we could on the fish, always swimming more or less on top of the DK. The idea was, if someone was accidentally hit, we'd have 2 more people with agro to keep kiting him while the dead person swims back. I was also dropping searing totem, which was able to get a good 20+ seconds of DPS in before the fish swam out of range of it.
The DK died twice and I died once because we got too close. Each time we swam back while the survivors kept agro. We kited him in a circle around Nespirah.
It took over 20 minutes, since I was able to bloodlust twice.
All in all, the hardest part is keeping up concentration when kiting him. You don't want to get too close (death) or too far (evade).
Note that with multiple people, one person can swim out of range of him to go out of combat and reset agro, if you so desire.
And they aren't kidding about "no loot". He doesn't drop ANYTHING, in fact, he didn't even have the "loot sparkles" when he died. No fish, no greys, nothing but a nice achievement to link in trade!

Terrifying fun fact: there is in fact, at least three of these guys. With my view range up to maximum, I spotted two of them then turned to swim away and saw another one in the distance. Add in the boss level serpent with over three million hit points, and you have the deadliest zone around.
Though the serpent is worse to be honest, simply because it has the same model as every other sea serpent so you're more likely to aggro it accidentally.

I was the kiter in a 3 man attempt at killing one...
We had 2 fire magi(I was one) and a ret paladin.
Basically, all I did was spam Scorch, Pyroblast on Proc, kept Living Bomb up, and used Combustion after a Pyroblast while backing up keeping him within the 6-20 yard range.
It did get a little unnerving when I had to turn to keep from hitting the fatigue zone and he got to within 8 yards, but you slowly gain distance on them.
We had previously attempted a 2 man, just me and the retadin, but something bugged out when we got it below 1 million health. I'm thinking we got too far away from the spawn point.

He is very easily soloable by any ranged class. Just stay between 6-20 yards of him. he moves extremely slow.
As a Fire Mage. I just strafed while spamming Scorch/Pyroblast and keeping LB, Combustion, and Fire Orb up.
I suggest you get this add-on specifically for taking him down if you don't have a ranged checker on your UI:
http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/range-display.aspx
When I was attacking him, It told me when I was between 8-10, 10-15, and 15-20 yards of him. I settled in between by staying in the 10-15 yard range, and for safety would just keep strafing out every 2 seconds till it hits the 15-20 yard range and repeating.
As for his abilities, the only one he would do that wouldn't one-shot you is the fear which he
ONLY
casts on non-tanks. So don't worry if he starts using it while kiting him.

The "not in line of sight" message is not a bug. The center of his hit box is actually near his ass, just under his last dorsal fin (or maybe it's his adipose fin).
This means that you can be sitting by one of his pelvic fins (the ones on the sides), facing his body and
not
have LoS on him.
It also means you can sit surprisingly close to his mouth and not aggro him or be in range, but get close to his tail and you just suddenly die.

My guild killed him after alot of trial and error. Our biggest issue was that our kiter would swim too far away and lose agro. This of course resulting in the whale shark 1shotting all the melee dps. So i'd recommend using 2 kiters incase one swims too far away and loses agro. I manage to kite him as a feral druid using only faire fire so anyone can do this as long as you have smart dps that watch their threat. You do have to stay within 5-20 yds of him or you either get 1 shotted or lose threat. Constantly swimming backwards will eventually put you out of range so just slow down every now and then. If any of your raid members start to catch up in threat they can just swim away and their threat will drop back down to zero and they can come back in and dps.
For kiters i'd recommend holy/prot palies and any range dps that can move and dps at the same time (moonkins, fire mages, shadowpriest, affliction locks).
Hope this helps anyone trying to get this achievement.

Whale sharks are level ? elite mobs in Vashj'ir. They got 9,6 million HP and they can hit for over 1 million damage so the only way you are able to kill them is to kite. Kiting is very simple, but theres only one problem: If you swim too far away from the whale shark he will evade, if you swim too close you will get one shotted.
Heres some tips how to do this achievement:
1. Download RangeDisplay addon here:
http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/range-display.aspx
. It's very hard to do this achievement without an addon which tells you range to the target.
2. You have to stay on 6-20 yard from the whale shark and when it starts casting fear you should stop swimming for a while or otherwise you will accidently swim too far away from it.
3. Kiter can be any class who got some instant ranged attacks. DPS should give kiter 30+ sec time to gather up some threat. If DPS are high on threat, they should swim away from the whale shark 20+ yards and reset aggro.
Heres a video which will give you an basic idea how to do it:

The KISS guide to whaleshark whacking:
-its all about keeping range between 5-20 yards. (under 5 it'll chomp you)
-backpedal the whole way. Your backward swim speed is just slightly faster than it, which is perfect.
-try and stay level, if you can't see the dorsal fin in the water, try and bring it back down a little.
-every now and then, turn it left just a wee bit. You're trying to do a big loop around Nespirah.
-if you die, rez and get straight back in (if you're not soloing, of course!)
-if you have aggro, don't let it touch you! (melee, don't take aggro off the ranged!)
-The LOS issue that pops up is because you can only hit it from directly in front. Just wiggle around a bit and you'll be fine.

Some of the more terrifying aquatic enemies I've encountered in video games include:
-The Dopefish in Commander Keen.
-The Killer Sharks in EverQuest (Which not only do incredible damage, but see through invisibility).
-Emerald Weapon in Final Fantasy VII (Especially considering that it's a bonus boss with over ten times as much health as the final boss).
-The sharks in the last level of Operation Neptune
-This monster. Thankfully, it's offset by the fact that it seems to be somewhat elusive, but I wonder how I, as a melee DPS (Fury warrior), can kill it even with a group, and soloing it is naturally out of the question.

It appears that the Whale Shark might be bugged currently, as of Jan 10, 2011.
We had him down to .7% and he evade bugged on us, and reset. We were so close! I currently have a GM ticket in and am waiting on a response.
As far as strategy goes... only bring ranged DPS. Stand in front of the whale shark, and DPS while you swim backwards. While it has aggro on someone else, feel free to nuke, but when you pull aggro do nothing but swim backwards (unless you have insta-cast DoTs in which case throw DoTs as you swim backwards).
It is imperative to swim in front of its face as the tail does damage. Also you cannot guide it/kite it/ swim it backwards if you pull aggro from the rest of the raid.
I would suggest bringing 20 - 30 level 85s in order to down it quickly, in case there is a reset timer on it.

I was able to solo this as an Elemental Shaman.
The safe distance is between 6 and 15 yards I found. You go any more than 17ish, he will leash.
The Whale will adjust over time, its path, if there is anything big in the way. Simply stay near the mouth at all times. If you have reached the end of the map, you must hurry before fatigue kicks in. Turn him while STILL keeping a safe 6-10 yard distance.
The fight is all about keeping a safe distance and look out for the end of the map if you're going solo this.
Near the end, it will be edge of your seat tension because you know you can screw up at any time and have to start over again. Good luck!

I soloed this on my 85 Hunter today at lunch.
Other than the previously mentioned tips about distance and other general rules of thumb, below are some tips for hunters.
1) Don't do this if you don't have aspect of the fox, since you will be moving backwards, you need to be able to cast Cobra Shot on the move.
2) Pull one of the Whale Sharks around the giant animal you can go inside (forgot the name) on the eastern side of vashj'ir. The whale shark that swins around the northern part of Vashj'ir leased on me randomly.
3) Kite the whale shark all the way to the southwestern most corner of vashj'ir. You should never have to fully turn him around if you can pull at least 7k DPS on him.
4) Keep your wolf up for the crit buff, but don't bother sending it to attack, it will just dissapear most of the time.
5) If you need to turn him a few degrees in a direction do so slowly and hold off on cobra strike while turning because this will straighten you out. Don't turn him if you are under 10 yards away. If you need some distance quickly because a turn is needed, continually send your pet in, the whale shark will sometimes cast fear on him and studder step forward, giving you an extra 5 or 6 yards.
When you finish, you feel like a bad ass
Good luck

Confirmed that it is all about the distance you keep from the Whale Shark.
The "good" range goes from about 3-4 yards outside of its mouth, until it says "Target not in line of sight"
If you grab a range finder addon, and get it to keep you 15 yards from the whale shark, you're golden.

Hey everyone!
Since I was asked very often on my server on how I achieved "From Hell's Heart I Stab at Thee", I thought I could make a little guide to achieve it. I don't know if there exists a guide, so I wrote one. I know there are lots of forum discussions going on about it, and when I did the achievement, I didn't like the fact that there wasn't a single guide that explains what to do. So I just want to share my own experience how I achieved this.
1) General
Generally, the fight is extremely simple. All you have to do is to simply kite the whale shark all along the map. All he does is to fear everyone expect the tank every now and then for 1-2 seconds. You don't need any healers, as you get instantly killed, if the shark is able to get in melee range.
2) Start: Group setup and 'Where to pull and kite?'
Basically, there is no specific group setup ready. We did it with a Blood Death Knight as tank, and we had a rogue, moonkin and retribution paladin doing the damage. But as I said, there is NO specific group setup. You could tank him as well with a moonkin or paladin. You could also stack dps up to 40 members, it just doesn't matter, as long as you read through point 3).
There are several whale sharks swimming through Vash'ir. We tried several locations and figured out that the one on the map below is the easiest. It may be well possible with other sharks, but be aware that it might happen that another shark appears and wipes you. Also, you should have a straight (!) kiting line with NO rocks/mountains/houses in the course of them, as the shark sometimes bugs out and wipes you instantly.
http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/4222/vashjir.jpg
(this is the map)
Just pull him right behind the giant-snail-thing and then kite him along the straight line like in the picture. This is the best way we figured out, as you pass the snail and the rocks/mountains without touching them.
3) The fight itself OR: How to get stupid in a short amount of time
First of all, your tank should get the addon "Range Display" from curse. It gets an incredibly lot easier with this. Why?, do you think. This is due to the fact, that you have to stay within 10 to 20 yards. If you fall below 10, you'll get hit with a ridiculous amount of damage and instantly wipe. If you go over 20, the shark will reset. So what does this addon do? It estimates (!) your range to the selected target. This is important throughout the whole fight.
Your tank gets slowly (!) near the shark. If the addon points out a range of 10-15 (it doesn't show exact ranges, but this is not necessary either), your tank can pull the shark. This is how the fight starts - and this IS basically already the fight. From the pull on, the tank has to swim backwards all the time. Nothing else, besides of doing a decent amount of aggro, of course. The damage dealers can start pulling out damage immediately, but stick to the threatmeter: In our case, with a Death Knight as tank (who could only do aggro (due to the range) with Icy Touch, Blood Boil and Death Coil), the aggro was very low, so damage dealers had to be very careful. But the rogue could help out with the aggro, as well as hunters could do. It just depends on what you use for a tank, basically every class that can do some abilities within this range is suitable.
The shark regularly fears all but the tank for 1-2 seconds. In this time, he stands still for about 1-2 seconds. This is why the tank should stay in the 10-15 area, as you don't know when he fears. Due to the fact that he stands still, you easy get over 20 yards range if you tank him in the 15-20 range. After he has cast his fear, he will reset. So as a tank, just stay in the 10-15 area ALL THE TIME and you're good. If you get out of it, just stand still for a moment until you are in the right range again.
There are 2 ways of kiting the shark: Below the water, or over the water. Both have an advantage, and both have a disadvantage. Below the water has the advantage, that the shark does NOT bug out. The disadvantage is that you have more obstacles in your way, and the shark sometimes bugs out if he touches a rock or other stuff. Doing it over the water (meaning that you swim with your head out of the water) has the advantage, that there are almost NO obstacles in your way, but it comes with the disadvantage of the shark bugging out sometimes (he then jumps back and forth and messes up with the range, he gets basically in 1 second from 15-20 yards to 1-5 yards and kills you instantly). You can choose what you want, we did it over water and had only 1 bug out.
This is basically all you have to know. Depending on your amount of damage dealers, you just have a ridiculously long time. It gets boring as hell, but your tank has to stay awake ALL THE TIME, as the fight stands and falls with him. If you continue like that, you'll get the achievement.
4) Last advices
There's not much left to say here. If you have to turn the shark around (due to rocks approaching, or due to get over the Vashj'ir Border), you have to plan on a long term scale. If you try to make a curve with him and you just swim sideways, you will see on your range meter how your range falls down (logically, as the shark uses a direct path to the tank). So don't try that, it'll wipe you. Instead, if you have to move him, wait until he fears. You then have 1-2 seconds to move sideways and therefore bringing the shark in a new position (but remember to watch your range meter!).
If you die as a damage dealer, this is no problem. Just go and fetch your corpse and join the fight again, you'll get the achievement too.
If you tank him OVER the water, you can use ground AoE as well to do damage and/or Aggro.
So, this was my little guide to the shark. I hope it helped some people, and if it already existed - yeah, credits for them. I did this guide on my own, all "tactics" written here belong to me and my 3 friends in the group. However, I am not the only one who figured it out, so don't call me a cheater ;)
Best regards and have fun,
Tugark

1) install IceHUD and enable range detection (or any range detection addon)
2) find a Whale Shark
3)
stay between 6-20 yards
and aggro.
4) swim backwards and spam for 15-20 minutes until dead.
Protips:
1) aggro from the FRONT!
2) Whale Shark swims fast until aggro. When you aggro it swims sllloooowww allowing you to out pace it in reverse.
3) swimming backwards you will be going a fraction faster then the Whale Shark.
Do not exceed 20 yards or it'll evade bug.
4) Turning=death. Make long sweeping arc's if you must turn.
5) dmg buff pots food trinkets make the fight go faster.
6) Patients young padawon.

Just killed that. We were a hunter (myself), a druid, and a warrior. I put on the aspect of the fox, and distract shot always on cd while I was kiting it swimming backwards in the shimmering expanse. Meanwhile, aggro free by my distracting shot, the druid and the warrior were nuking it. it took about 15 mins for us to kill it.
The trick is to keep about 20 yrd distance between you and the whale all the time. After 40 yrd, it resets and closer than 20 it one shots you. I switched between aspect of the fox (for mobile cobra shot) and of the pack to keep optimum distance.
If the one who's kiting dies, I think it could be possible for another to kite as the dead run back.
Damn it took real long.

I am actually TERRIFIED of sharks. I don't swim near pool drains. I live near the beach of Lake Michigan but don't like to go in past my knees.... all because of sharks. I am afraid of sharks in any and all water- even water where logically I know there won't be sharks- it doesn't matter. This is soooo wrong, Blizz :( I managed to avoid leveling here as soon as I found out about the huge whale sharks... got my seahorse and never came back but now I am realizing that for herbing I need to go there.... why? why? why? I went there earlier and was literally petrified. I can have a boss banging on me in a raid and I don't care.... it's a stupid character ... it's not really me getting hit but for some reason all logic flies out the window when I go to Vash'Jir and I am terrified to move more than an inch at a time without doing a complete camera pan all around me to check for sharks.

As for whale sharks as an IRL species: First and foremost, they are
sharks
not whales, so there is no blubber. Not really any bones either except for those tiny, tiny teeth (even when you're face to face with one, you can't really see it's teeth they're so small...but there are 300 rows of 'em in there). They are an elasmobranch, a cartilaginous fish. The largest accurately recorded whale shark was just over 40 feet long, though there have been unconfirmed stories of up to 100ft. As mentioned by other posters, the whale shark is a gentle giant. They merely swim around the world feeding on tiny animals, and here's why. Although a whale shark's mouth can get up to 4 feet wide, their throats are so small and their esophagus makes a right-angle turn before reaching their stomach that it's not really comfortable for them to try to swallow anything larger than a quarter. Whale shark conservation is a serious issue, particularly considering the major oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico last year. That spill spreads across one of the annual migratory paths that Whale Sharks take. They are also extremely overfished, particularly in the east. It was with great joy that we learned 3 years ago that fishing for Whale Sharks is now illegal in Taiwan. They are truly awesome creatures, and I encourage you to see one in real life, be it by taking an Eco-Tour down in Mexico, visiting any of the three facilities housing Whale Sharks in Asia, or by visiting the Georgia Aquarium.
As for whale sharks in-game: The first video I saw of one, it seemed as though they were just tail-swiping the heck out of someone as if they were suddenly turning around and you just happened to be in the way. Upon getting a closer look at the character model, they seem to have acquired some vicious-looking teeth and an angry-looking face. Perhaps what was once a normal, docile creature has been warped by the influence and magics of Azshara and her evil Naga magics. After all, she's only been down there for 10k years...plenty of time to twist and corrupt a species through magic and breeding.

Just solo'd as a Survival spec'd hunter, iLevel 350
I'll give a run down on how I did it, what to expect, and how to prep if you want to attempt to solo this guy yourself.
PRE-GAME (Or, "Oh, I'm sure he really isn't *that* big")
• Hunters, Survival spec is a must. This guy has a crapton of armor, so Marksman is rendered mostly useless (my Aimed Shots, usually hitting base 36k+, were having issues breaking 11k non-crit. Keep in mind I'm constantly moving too, so Aimed Shots were only fired on MMM procs). Beast Mastery doesn't work either, as you need to keep your pet on passive and by your side at all times (otherwise he'll either disappear due to the sheer size of the whale or get nom'd). All non-hunters who could solo this deal non-physical damage anyway, so this point doesn't apply to them.
• Make sure you have as many spells keybound within reach of your 'S' (or whatever you have backstrafe bound to) as possible. If you're reaching too far, your fingers *will* cramp real fast, as this is easily a 10-16 minute kite, depending on your gear levels. For me personally, I had
on 'Q' (primary nuke for hunters during this kite),
on '4', and
and
夺命射击
on a mouse button.
• Make sure your on-use trinkets/items are macro'd into your abilities somehow, trust me, your life will be much easier. I failed to make sure my
灰鳞的优雅
was macro'd to Rapid Fire in SV spec, and I regret not being able to use it during the fight, as the extra damage would have been very helpful. As a hunter, ideal spells to macro items to would be Rapid Fire and Black Arrow, as they have cooldowns longer than a few seconds (you won't really be using other CDs on this kite)
• Install a range viewer mod (I used RangeDisplay, downloadable at wow.curse.com). The reasons are two-fold. First, he'll reset if you get further than 20 yards away, as others have stated. The other that I didn't see mentioned is that his size makes it *really* hard to gauge range. He can (and will) one-shot you when it looks like you have a decent gap between him and you (as I discovered more than once).
• As I stated above, pets *must* be on passive if you want them to live, as the whale's size will either cause them to despawn, or they'll just get munched on. I recommend hunters bring either a wolf or a cat. Your DPS won't differ much between the two, so it comes down to personal preference. I went with wolf. Avoid pets which apply effects to the target at all costs (Raptors, Ravagers, Hyenas, etc). The pet won't live long enough to make it worthwhile.
• While I didn't use any personally, food + flasks will make your life much, much easier. This guy has over 9 million hp, and it takes a while to burn thru it all.
THE KITE (Or, "HOLY $%!* HE'S HUGE")
• Move in a straight a line backwards as you can possibly manage without hitting rocks/fatigue areas. While he's slow when you're kiting him, turning abruptly *will* mean he'll catch up to you, and he can and will one shot you when he catches you. If you *really* need to turn, do it by turning the camera with the mouse whilst still holding back, and do it *slooooowly*. Unless you're humping the rocks already, a slight turn should steer you clear of them in the long term. You can kite him close to the surface safely. Just don't break the surface yourself.
• Watch your terrain carefully. This pull is pretty surreal. It seems like you're moving through the environment pretty slowly, but before you know it you're at the edge of the map and holycraphestillhas5millionhp. Just keep swinging your camera around (hold left-click to do so without actually turning your character) to keep track of your progress.
• Keep between 5-15 yards away from him. If you get further, he'll reset, and it's really, *really* annoying if he resets after you've been burning him for the past 10 minutes. I personally stayed about 8 yards away, stopping for a split second to let the shark catch up if I started to get into the 10-15 yard range. You don't have to be as suicidal as me, but it'll ensure he won't reset. Just be wary, if you stop for a half-second too long, you will get munched. Inversely, make sure you watch your range at all times. The Sea Legs buff means you do move faster than him, and you *will* outrange him if you're not careful.
• Spam whatever instants you can whilst moving, and make use of every proc you have. Hunters, you're doing this in
. You have to be pushing 7-8k dps to do this without having to make any major adjustments in your path (before you knock the requirements, keep in mind you're moving the WHOLE TIME). As a SV Hunter, I used Explosive Shot, Rapid Fire, and Black Arrow on cooldown, using an ES->CS->ES->CS->ES rotation on LnL procs. Hunters, remember to reapply Hunter's Mark when it drops off (and it will), and cast Cobra Shot when you're not casting anything else. My running dps throughout the fight was between 8.3k and 9.4k.
• Watch for other Whale Sharks. This seems like a weird piece of advice, but the odds are good that you'll encounter a second Whale Shark while you're kiting the first. While you probably won't aggro it, you must watch your AoE skill useage if another one is going to be passing near you, as pulling a second one will *probably* result in you dying. That said, don't freak out if you see one. Whale Sharks are notoriously hard to pull unless you're already in their mouth.
• If your kite takes you out to the Abandoned Reef (as mine very nearly did), watch for
克罗拉斯
. He's a level 85 elite who swims around the Abyssal Depths (and Shimmering Expanse for a bit), but is most commonly sighted in the Abandoned Reef and Abyssal Breach. He also possesses the ability to one-shot players, but isn't quite as buggy about it as Whale Sharks tend to be. His pull radius is pretty big (ask any hunter who has camped Ghostcrawler), but he moves pretty slow, so if you can avoid the initial gib, you can probably kite him pretty safely with the whale shark.
• Don't panic. If you get too close (within 8 yards) he may play his eating animation, which, if you're kiting with your camera zoomed in, is both surprising and terrifying (I nearly fell out of my chair first time it happened, it's very fast and is not telegraphed at all). If this happens, one of two things has just happened; a) He's eaten you. GG, try again, or b) he's applied his armor debuff to you. *Tiny* damage on this (ticks for 600 or so), not a threat in the slightest. Don't stop backpedalling until one of you is dead.
• He's big. Very big. Your skills will take a while to connect, so account for that in managing your procs. Hunters rocking
被烧毁的雕文
will notice a lag on seeing their Kill Shot CD refreshed.
• Enjoy it :) The only rewards for this is an achievment and a sense of satisfaction, there's no loot to get here. While one of the most nerve wracking solos I've ever done, it was also one of the most fun. The final million health had me on the edge of my seat.
The full kite

Soloed him as a hunter. An amazing expierence! One thing I can add to the previous comments: While kiting and using a range addon, make sure to keep looking at your map and around you to see where you are going (as mentioned), but also think ahead and slowly make turns when your range is at about 15-25 yards. That way you will avoid area problems later on and get your range back to 10-15 yards because the whale shark will cut you off. When it's back to 15-25 yards you can make a little turn yet again. If you keep to this principle it will be a fairly easy (but long) kite.

Just Solo'd this as a Holy Paladin as of 23/03/11, in 63 minutes, Lvl 85,mix of Blood Thirsty and Vicious gear, Using Rangefinder, keeping between 10-15 yards away, turning VERY slightly in a circle whenever Rangefinder read 15-20, sometimes stopping until the range was 10-15 if there was no need to turn, if the Range reads 8-10 swim bacwards in a straight line to how the whale shark is oriented as he turns in 'increments', this is done so as not to get caught by him as he turns inwards towards you while you kite him about.
The Whale Shark was brought to the surface by angleing my character in an ascent as i pulled him, word of caution: pull threat reasonably level with him, even though i was at the correct range, if i was too high up he would close the distance just by turning and result in a corpse run, kiting upon the surface ensures less obstacles as you swim backwards, Just be weary of the shoal with a Flight point on it in the Shimmering Expanse area.
This is possibly too much information, perhaps not, hope it helps anyone wanting to try this sucker on, Happy hunting! :)
as a side note, judgement and holy shock spam takes a VERY long time >.<

Just did a solo kill as a MM hunter all in PvP gear. Took about thirty minutes. Staying at 8 - 15 yards was the main method. At one point I was rapidly (as rapidly as backpedaling underwater you can get) nearing the edge of the map. A quick side strafe quick turn sorted me out. Very tricky though. Side strafing increased the speed so much that I went from 8-10 to 15-20 in about a second and I thought I was going to lose him. So you can side strafe to do a rapid turn with a whale shark but be very mindful of your distance.

Really frustrating that it would happen to me which leaves me unsure about trying again. With my luck, everything will be fine until I hit 1%.

Whale Shark
makes small charges on you closing in the cap if you try to kite it at max range. This prevents us hunters from killing it like we did before.

Is there an official number of these things? I was just in the gap between Kelp'thar and Shimmering Expanse, and there are at least three that share a common intersection. I confirmed this by flying above the water and seeing all threes' names above the surface near the island Horde flight path. Plus the dead one in 1k needles, and Mobus and Wil'hai (if you want to include those; I haven't seen them so I don't know how big they are.) I studied their travel paths, and one travels the eastern coast of the Forest, and two more travel in opposite directions around Nespirah. This would seem to confirm what looks like three paths on the map on this page. I got lucky and saw all three of them near the same place! EPIC DEATH!

Two-manned this mad bastard the other day, Survival Hunter and Shadow Priest. Hunter (me) stayed in Aspect of the Fox, held 'e' and swam in massive circles holding the aggro and Priest stayed in range and attacked. I was able to stay just out of the way of his jaws while still being able to attack and keep focus up. It was fun having so much aggro ^_^
Took about fifteen minutes. The first time we tried this tactic I think I swam too far and he reset, so hunters make sure you have at least one party member with you and use his map waypoint as a reference.

Tried to solo this today on my main 85 hunter, got him down to about 50% when he charged me and sent me into oblivion. I raged. It wasn't the first time he did it, but on his previous tries i was able to disengange and he'd stop his charge before he could reach me. Needless to say, disengage didn' fool him this time... It's a long and nerve-wracking enough task without the charge, I really don't see why Blizzard added such an ability.
What a troll.
PS: I tried engaging a couple of other whales before i was successfull in kiting this one, those charged me instantly. A tough customer but no way I'm giving up on this beast.

Just soloed him as a 85 Survival Hunter... took me 4 attempts each time getting him to about 15% before i got too far away from him (he gets MUCH slower once he is within Kill Shot range aka 20%). On the successful attempt I was kiting him for just over half an hour.
I highly suggest having a cat out for the extra agility (on passive of course) and watching your Tranq shot range, if you keep him within range of a Tranq and just outside his mouth (for obvious reasons) this should be quite an easy task... albeit a time consuming one.

Tips for soloing as a Mage. Use fire spec so you can use living bomb scorch on the move and hot streak pyros to do dps. You don't need to use snares or slows. DO NOT use blink, you will get too far ahead and he will reset. You have to stay just in front of his nose, the fight will take 15-20 minutes depending on your DPS.
Use mage armor throughout the fight make sure you have 3 charges of mana gem before you start, and if you don't have the talent that makes scorch cost no mana you will have to use evocate a couple of times, you can get 2-3 ticks of evocate and continue moving.

Generally moves at around backwards swim speed. This makes kiting him
relatively
easy, so long as you've got instant skills or something to allow you to cast while moving. As mentioned before, Aspect of the Fox is a must for Hunters. Basically you just want to dangle yourself in front of his snout, barely out of reach for the duration. While moving about, keep in mind that you do need to kite in a circle to avoid getting to the zone edge, but it's a pretty large area - Just turn the camera a tiny bit every few seconds and you should be fine.
The distance is apparently too far for your pet to even get close to melee range without despawning, so delegate your pet to just giving Roar of Courage buffs. I noticed that with 4.2 it seems my pet stopped doing it automatically when in combat but on Passive, so you'll have to actually add that into your rotation.
They will sometimes charge as mentioned, and I haven't seen any sort of obvious cause for it. Shypanda claimed it moved slower at 20% health, but the second Kill Shot became available, I was forced to swim sideways for the speed increase and pop shots off whenever I could for around a minute to avoid getting snagged.
My item level is ~355, and I was doing 4.5k DPS, so I'm imagining that I was pretty poor output (Not standard, obviously). That said, this is one of those things that can actually be won out with perseverance despite performance.
One thing I didn't see mentioned in the comments is the fact that it
casts fear.
This isn't particularly interesting because the distance on fear seems to be shorter than ranged attack area, but the few times that my pet
did
decide to try to take a bite, the entire shark did a very worrying
lurch
and wobble because it actually has a casting animation. Which is... Really disconcerting, and obviously worrying when you've been getting it to chase you around for twenty minutes and it suddenly moves in a strange way.
In any case, I've probably said far more than is necessary. Soloed it on my second try, got out of range on the first try and it hauled ass across the entire zone to reset. Happy hunting!

Easy to solo as Frost DK.
Hell, It took me 35 mins to kill this guy with my crappy gear (~360 @ 4.2.2) but it was just a matter of execution, not DPS.
Anyway if someone needs some help, here's how I did it;
-Mount up your Abyssal Seahorse and find the Whale Shark
-Pull him from the front (I managed to wipe 4 times in a row while pulling him from the side for some reason, also you're gonna be looking at his ugly face for quite some time so get used to it :P)
-Use Howling Blast, Death Coil and Outbreak.
-Try to time all your cooldowns with Outbreak to maximize disease damage
-I kited him in a pretty big and not so perfect circle near Ruins of Vash'jir (just holding my right strafe key and using mouse to form an imaginary circle)
Pick up Icy Reach if you don't have it since the extra 10yards on Howling Blast make this fight a lot easier because you don't have to stop every 2 seconds while kiting to get back in the HB range :)
Edit: Don't get scared if he suddenly completely changes his positioning, it happens when you go up or down and it looks very weird/funny.

We 2-manned him with an 84 Warlock (me) kited, swimming backwards, while an 85 Pally helped with DPS. I know this should be the other way around but it doesn't matter much when it's a one-shot death either way.
Make sure if you have a pet or minion, SET THEM ON PASSIVE. As you kite the
Whale Shark
, he periodically casts a damaging fear spell and winds up overkilling your pet if it's nearby. This is what kills you too if you get too close to it. A good rule of thumb: if you are closer than about 1 character away from the tip of his nose, you're too close.
His damage hitbox is at about his middle so you won't be able to get much further than this if you expect to hit at 30yd range. I don't think melee damage could be of use here.
At about 10% health, he started to speed up without warning. This forced me to start swimming forward and sideways to continue to dps/kite.
It's important, if you are kiting by swimming backwards,
don't make any sudden moves up or down
. He will catch up to you. Blizzard did not spend much time on the way this character moves, it's very unnatural. If you start to move up or down, his whole body starts angling in that direction (since his hitbox is 25+yds away from you). It looks really odd. You can even get almost his entire body out of the water.
4 wipes and 45 minutes later (about 25 minutes for the successful try) and he was down. We kited him on the
outskirts of Vashj'ir (path)
so as to not run into other enemies. Be careful if you do this, exiting the zone will cause him to speed up and kill you.
No loot, no XP, no guild rep, no faction rep. Got the achievement as promised, along with one gigantic corpse the size of a Stormwind boat (seriously, youtube has a video where it's kited there).

Alright so I'm confused as to why not many have soloed this.
I've just soloed this as an 85 elemental shaman, my gear doesn't affect anything but the time it took to kill the whale shark.
I kited him around in a large circle for about 30 minutes, keeping fire shock up and spamming thunderbolt. It was relatively easy.
He is slightly slower than your swim speed so he will be easy to kite if you have lots of instant casts or you are an elemental shaman and you have the lightning bolt glyph, enabling you to move while casting lightning bolt.
When he gets to about 10% health, like most mobs, he slows down even more. And you have to be careful to not go out of range.
Also I experienced something that, as Google has just told me, no one has ever experienced. Just for fun, I decided to use my lava elemental totem. As soon as my elemental attacked the shark, he proceeded to cast fear on him. o_0
I was very surprised.

But atleast I made it. 37 min, 5974 dps and 13M dmg (he bugged out and started evade when he had around 4M hp left, and healed up to 8M hp) :(
A good tip is to have the mini map in the corner to make it easier too see where you are. Had 2 failed attempts earlier today where he just despawned with 900k hp left both times :(. Probably because I left the zone ^^
After completing it, you feel very proud :D

Kitable by Affliction Warlock.
Just keep around 10 feet ahead of him so that you are still in range and can dot him. When he does his fear move it never hit me (not sure if that was luck or not) but it gives you a couple of seconds to use non-instant cast abilities.
Hope this helps.

On a whim I decided to give this a go with my lvl80 hunter, still in heirlooms after Northrend. After approximately 45 minutes of kiting, I did a wrong move and got oneshot - and cursed since Whale Shark was at 58% hp at that time.
Perfectly doable for a low level character, in other words, but since it will take a long, long time, there will be many chances to screw it up and die.
Just as a note for other hunters out there - concussive shot doesn't work. Didn't try traps, but I assume those won't work either. Download RangeDisplay, put it somewhere prominent and strafe-kite away!
edit: Went back with a slightly better weapon - the heirloom bow just wasn't cutting it - and killed the Whale Shark after hour and twenty minutes of kiting. That'll show the one aquintance who insisted that this is a 40-man raid boss... :P

Solo killed as a balance druid in all quest greens and blues. Successful attempt took 30 minutes, kiting it around Nespirah, always sideswimming.
If you swim away to a distance of 40 yards from it, you get around 2.5 seconds until its nose touches you. Taking that as the "safe" distance, anything with a casting time less than 2.5 seconds can be happily thrown at it. Just maximize your distance, stop, cast and keep swimming. Of course, instant casts and DoTs are your best friends.
Also, if you're going to kite around Nespirah too, just be sure to stay far enough from the spikes on its back. I failed two attempts (lost aggro once, died once) trying to maneuver away from a spike I was about to run into.

Just stay slightly inside of your furthest attack range shoot off some spells or arrows/bullets. Then just keep moving with him.
If you are a lock use your imp or succubus. The Succubus will stun him in place. Also it is good to have a mage here so he can freeze the shark.
Whole fight will take 5 to 10 minutes depending on how many you have. 10 for solo and 5 for a full group roughly.
Tanks are not needed as he continually moves and if you get to close he will EAT you.

So I begged my brothers to do this. And it was scary. But we had a darn good plan. I, the prot pally (and therefore useless against this monstrosity cause it can one-hit me in its sleep), played healer/random hits that don't really do anything for the overall dps, but it was my idea so I still get credit. One brother was less scared about it cause he wasn't a tank and doesn't pull that much aggro. So he pulls army of the dead and hits when he can while bro # 2 gets to be the cool shammy who can range-dps while moving like there's no tomorrow. Assuming you stay away from the blasted reefs and stay the heck away from the bugger, you shouldn't run into any difficulty. But it will take FOREVER.
Important tips?
STAY THE HECK AWAY FROM THE BEAST, BECAUSE YOUR LIFE DANG WELL DEPENDS ON IT.
And hit. A lot. But mainly, kite like there's no tomorrow. Because if you don't, there won't be.

One important thing about this achievement, is that you should go complete the quests in Vasj'ir that make you able to breath underwater. If not, you should bring some underwater breathing potions with you.

OK after many failed attempts I managed to kill him solo as MM hunter.
Now, the thing is this: it matters ***where*** you kite him!
As has already been mentioned since 4.3 he doesn't evade anymore when you outrange him. However he now speeds up. (Or perhaps he already did that in te past but nobody at that time ever mentioned it which seems unlikely.)
Anyway, this speed up is the key of killing him post 4.3 since just staying at max range is pretty easy. I used RangeDisplay as an addon, because of his size and animations you may think he is actually closer than he is.
The key however is, his speed ups. Someone mentioned he speeds up in Kelthar Forest. Now, I was kiting him on the other side of the map and also noticed speed ups there.
Also there isn't just one Whale Shark but at least two, even if the achivement states kill 'the' one. When I tried the other that one never ever wanted to slow down.
So my theory was that they speed up on certain locations (perhaps the quest areas?). It seems I was right, so I kited him all the way up from Kelpthar Forest down never going above quest areas. No speed ups ever!
Now, the line between speed ups and fatique there however is not so wide, so it is better to 'walk' (swim :-) ) this path first as the fatique-line isn't a straight line. I got killed twice by fatique, which isn't fun if you have him below 50% already.
Anyway, knowing that he speeds up only above certain (quest?) areas, and knowing the fatique line, was the key of it. After that it was a matter of just kiting and killing.
Some extra tips:
- immolation trap helps if he swins through it.
- disengage helps after turning to get back distance
- I had both a wolf and cat on my spellbar and send them in every X time, so he would get out of range and I could summon and get the other. Dubbel bufs and double calll of the wild.

Gather around, story time.
It was a dark, June day. Or maybe it was August. I don't know, I'm not a story teller. Anyway, we have a small, active guild, and I decided I wanted to kill a whale shark. I convinced my guild leader (heroic DS geared prot warrior) to tank for me. Little did we know that the whale shark would one shot anything. So, we got two more 85s, making a group of this:
Level 85 arms warrior (Guild leader respecc'd)
Level 85 prot paladin
Level 85 Oomkin
Level 85 shadow priest (me)
After three (failed) attempts of kiting it, we decided that we would make sure nobodys threat surpassed 40% other than the tank. After about 10 minutes of me spamming mind flay and fade, and the oomkin spamming moonfire not knowing what a threat meter is, we get the whale shark down to 5%, WHEN, ALL OF A SUDDEN, THE ARMS WARRIOR PREPARES FOR ONE MIGHTY MORTAL STRIKE WHEN...
You have been disconnected.
Our skype call at the time of the disconnect went something like this:
WHAT THE FU--
SON OF A WHO--
Yeah. That's right. We were all disconnected. The server went down.
Moral of the story, don't try to not-kite the whale shark. He will eat you.
ALSO, When he lifts his head up, he's about to attack you.

I don't know if it is just happening to me, but a few friends and I were in Vashj'ir to kill Mobus when we happened upon not one, but
TWO
whale sharks. One had spawned near the surface, and one had spawned several yards below the other.
Needless to say, my friends and I killed both, but a few minutes later...
TWO MORE SPAWNED ON US.
I looked all over the internet to see if this has happened to anyone else, but to no avail.
Is it whale migration season?
Edit: I searched some more and found that this is not a rare occurrence. xD

Soloed this today as a Survival Hunter. Was very easy.
Just tossed on Aspect of the Fox and strafed around in a tight circle with him in the center. I was pretty much at max range - a few times I outdistanced him and had to pause to let him catch up, and if he got the speed buff, I just concussive shot him and kept going. Took about eight minutes (2 x rapid fire with a little under two minutes left on the CD after the second one). Hardest part was not getting bored while doing it.
Also, my pet never despawned, but never hit him, so the only thing he was good for was the crit buff (used my wolf) and Call of the Wild.

I know he's easily solo-able, but for any DK tanks who want the achievement, A blood DK and myself(elemental shaman) solo'd this today. Blood DK kept diseases up on the shark and kited him. After about thirty seconds I followed along with glyph of unleashed lightning, Lightning bolt, Lava burst and flame shocking the thing. I burned through my mana pretty quickly spamming wind shear to keep my aggro down, but the mana breaks every 33% helped to reset aggro.
Edit: Oh, and this took us about 15 minutes.

So I spotted someone starting a raid on this bad boy, and since I didn't have the achievement I signed up on my main, a hunter. Called in a guild mate that sits across the table from me, too.
Ten people left for Vashj'ir, and I was pointed out as kiter.
I had never kited Whale Shark before.
My RangeMeter had some issues with range at first, making the pull difficult, and as it turned out Whale Shark has some ability that would stop me dead in my tracks. I died, other hunters died, everyone died.
The raid promptly fell apart leaving myself, my guild mate - another hunter - and a druid. Three people still left in the water.
I figured I would at least learn how to kite him for future attempts, so swam off. Shot, backed up, kept shooting. At 94% my guild mate joined in, at 92% the druid joined. This time I was prepared for suddenly standing still, but turning around to swim faster at 10-15 on the range meter was rather scary.
No failures on this second attempt. Whale Shark died after about seven minutes, give or take. Lots of mocking went on in trade chat shortly after.
So to all you raiders out there, whether for whale shark or other parts of the game - one failure does not mean permanent failure, don't leave just because there's no success on the first try. Some people really do learn quickly and will do their part flawlessly on second try.

I soloed him on my 85 Tauren hunter (Hatetobeu).
Here are some pointers from my experience:
Don't bother with your pets. Even with growl off they'll immediately grab aggro and get 1 shoted.
Don't bother with Dire Beast. They'll immediately get feared.
He is immune to Concussive Shot. But he swims slow as fudge anyhow.
If you are speced in Murder of Crows, I highly recommend using it.
Here was my rotation:
Serpent Shot
Arcane Shot
Widow Venom
Cobra Shot to refresh SS
Hit my trinket when CD finished
Hit my rapid fire when CD finished
Murder of Crows when CD finished
This was aprox a 20 min fight. But the fight was a boredom buster and time killer till MOP released.
ETA: As far as range is concerned, I say being right outside his nose is the minimum distance.
Also he WILL berserk around 70 or 80% health, Tranquilizing Shot does nothing to him, and he will NOT charge you. Just keep beyond his nose and all it good.
I basically kept him circling.
ENJOY!

If you set your view distance to ultra, you can actually see about 3 of these suckers roaming around the Shimmering Expanse, and you can almost always do a "/target whale shark" from anywhere in the zone. There is definitely more than 1 at any given time. Just as Hellfire has 2 Fel Reavers.

Any ranged should be able to solo this, albeit a long battle awaits you. The only things you need to worry about is having him do his charge, hitting something, or pulling any mobs that may slow you. After research on multiple sites, here is a nice little explanation on how to avoid all of those issues and how to keep distance just right as a ranged attacker.
Before You Start:
He's pretty easy to find. The lowest marker on the map of Vashj'ir should put you near one.
(81.4,43.8 -- in
柯尔普萨之森
just east of Gnaws Boneyard)
. Just "/tar whale", you'll find him.
Range is crucial in this fight. It's a good idea to have some sort of range finder
(I use the one that comes with
X-Perl
)
. You want to make sure you're between 20-30 yards from him; this is because there is a possibility of him charging you, which increases his speed by about 50%. At that point he can catch up to you, and that is something we'll put in the "bad" column.
The next thing to keep in mind is direction. You want to stay just east of the land masses so as to avoid aggroing any extra mobs. I find it simplest to swim north and veer slightly west to start.
Step by Step:
Swim to with in range of the Whale Shark (23-30 yards) and shoot him in the face.
Start swimming backwards north veering slightly west.
Continue shooting him the face and ever so slightly tap "A" to start veering more north.
If at any point in time you hit 15 yards or lower OR you see him speed up, hold down "A" or "D" (or use your mouse) to spin around and swim away from him until you create a 30 meter gap. Once you have your gap, spin back around.
When you do your spins, keep an eye on your mini-map. You want to keep making a circle, adjusting it roughly 20° every couple of minutes. This will have you finished a full 180° at around half his life (with a DPS of 30K or so.)
Don't bother slowing him. Keep an eye on what DOT's work. You want max DPS, so don't waste your time on anything that doesn't work or is low damage.
Extra Notes:
Despite what some sites have said, the Whale Shark's charge is random. After dozens of battles, there has been no set of criteria that has consistently had him do it or not do it. (Other than....)
A caveat to the last statement, it has been found if you keep him trying to match depth, he never does a charge. Using this, I can say, that's a great theory. When you have a 25-30 yard gap, use "X" to go down and space bar to go back up. Don't do it a lot or the gap will close, but at the very least, it breaks the monotony of the fight a tiny bit.
People will say, "Stay on top of the water". With the spin tactic I mentioned, coupled with changing your depth, I stayed under to make both of these easier. If you do swim on the top and he catches up, trying to get away from him with constant camera changes can be a bit hard.
It's good to note that as of MOP 5.1, because of gear scores now, the Whale Shark doing less than 50K of overkill on my Marksmanship
猎人
. I would imagine anyone in full raid gear would be able to take a hit, I think there is some buffer to the damage done by Fatal Bite. This doesn't matter, but I'd like to know.
So, now you have your range finder, a Whale Shark, and a plan of attack. If this is your first shot at it, good luck; you're probably going to die. Keep trying.

Just solo'd as a lvl 90 shadow priest. Was very simple after I figured it out. Did my best to stay at max range as he swims very slow. Kept my dots up & used MB or MS when I had instant procs. It took approx. 7 minutes to kill him like this. Halopro also help enormously for judging my range since he has such a strange hit box. If the bar got to red, I'd turn and swim away. Otherwise I just kept strafing in one direction renewing dots when needed.

As a ranged class, it's fairly easy to solo, it's just a bit tedious. As a Moonkin, I only used Aquatic Form for recovering breath, but it's feasible on any other class. If you stand close to its mouth, the model is so big that you are far away to not to be eaten and also close enough so it doesn't evade. What I did was kiting next to its mouth, turning around only to dot it and shoot Starsurge on proc and Starfall on CD. If you swim forward you end up far enough (20~ yards) to shoot at it with even a 2.5 seconds cast. Only dotting it is good enough since with current gear its HP goes down steadily. It got me turning around since I was careless enough to get fatigue, but it hit me three times without killing me.

I was really surprised with a prot pally I made on the 5.4 ptr. Got him to 11% and just flat ran out of cds. The biggest key was mastery and keeping up shield of the righteous damage reduction, which for me it was about 62% less physical damage taken. I also made use of bastion of power, the new set bonus for 5.4 and rotating all my cds. This was also with almost all pvp accessories. I really think this will be tankable/solo in 5.4 with the right gear.
What usually got me was thrash which resulted in big spikes of damage. Also ran into nespirah to get 10% stat buff from the slimes inside before I tried each time. On average his melee was hitting for about 150k - 200k without blocks or cds.

Found this was rediculously easy in a group of 9 lvl90's - overkill really.
We had 2 DKs use army and were able to nuke it down.
We had 2 deaths but they still got credit for the kill. At only 10mil hp you can just brute force this now (something I didn't think would be possible what with the 1shottiness).

I sat for hours trying to figure out where I went wrong with this guy. After further consideration, I realized my first problem was attempting to defeat the Whale Shark with a toon named Ishmelle. He has apparently been holding onto that grudge since Melville kicked the bucket.
On my third attempt I finally got into a rhythm. Stayed about 20 yards off the tip of his nose, side swimming while barraging him with serpent sting, arcane shot and distracting shot to keep aggro off my pet. After about 10 minutes of this I was feeling pretty good. I had taken a large chunk of his bizillion health and maintained steady dps.
And then all hell broke loose. My phone buzzed, my finger hit scatter shot instead of distracting shot. I lost aggro. He killed my faithful companion and turned his evil glare back to me. By this time I had gotten too close trying to recover. In a second it was over. Yet again I had failed, but just like Ahab "I'll follow him around the Horn, and around the Norway maelstrom, and around perdition's flames before I give him up."

Solo'd on 508 mm 90 hunter... though the ilvl doesn't matter too much in this.
I didn't bother with the picky details listed above this guide, all I did was follow a few rules:
- Serpent sting (a dot, for all non-hunters)
- Slowing devices don't work, so don't bother
- Instant attacks, arcane shot and chimaera shot (include attack to refresh dot)
- Steady shot to generate focus when low
- For those with aimed shot glyph, use if you want an extra burst of damage, but mostly pop when instant cast is possible
I made sure to stay on the border of 'out of range' and 'in range', just to be safe. If you're too far out of range, let go of the backward key for a small duration of time.
- If you feel as if you are too close, use disengage, then readjust positioning.
- Do not use pets/minions etc.
Final tip:
- For kiting, simply stay on the outside of Nespira, (I think that's what it's called) and you'll be fine. Do this by turning your character slightly toward Nespira when you start venturing outside the circle. I accidentally kited too far outside the circle and the shark evaded when he was at 3m health or so. That sucked.
Good luck :)
Ps. It's easy as long as you stay out of its range

Soloed this today as a 573 Assassination rogue.
I glyphed evasion, weakened armor and Vendetta. I flasked, potted and heroed (drums). I cast evasion right off the bat, used preparation, and used a second evasion once the first was up. Recount shows I did 262k which makes the fight about 36 total seconds. That's actually pretty low dps considering I can pull well over 400k single target on burst, but this is without raid buffs.
Essentially, as a rogue, you have to be able to kill it in the 30 seconds that 2 evasions last. I could take 1 hit from it without dieing so you can add up to about 7 seconds or so to the fight to kill it. Essentially it can take no more than 37 seconds or you'll die.

Solo kill 539 Destro Warlock. Could have done easily with 500-525. With Kil'jaeden's lvl 90 talent, all I did was use glyph of unending breath, Grim of sacrifice, and strafe while casting incinerate with curse of elements up. Didn't even really need to keep immolate on it, although u do have plenty of time to cast it, as well as the occasional chaos bolt.
The range addon the people here keep talking about is not needed as warlock. Just strafe left or right while casting, and try to stay just past his nose. if u can cast incinerate, you aren't too far away.
I attempted twice. First time I sorta wanted to see how close I could get (excuses excuses). Took a hit for 6.5 mil. 2nd time I just strafed and incenerated / soulburn. My point I am trying to make is that in neither attempt, did he evade on me.
I found him in shimmering expanse, and the wowhead positioning of the mob is accurate.

The key to soloing him lies in the fact that you can strafe-swim faster than he can swim. As long as you're on a toon with at least some ranged attacks (I did it in one try on my Frost DK) and you stay out of range of his jaws, it's easy to do. The worst part of it all is getting out of range to do -your- attacks and having to wait for him to get closer and closer before being able to attack again...

Soloed with my 90 warlock. Item level isn't critical, although it'll definitely affect the length of the kite. Best to have Kil'jaeden's Cunning so you can cast not just Fel Flame but Shadow Bolt while kiting sideways - yep, you read that right, I just did most of the vast circle around Nespirah (or whatever that vast shell is named) while strafing left, because it let me add those two spells to Curse of the Elements, Corruption, and Hand of Gul'dan, which you can actually use on targets *behind* you, which is nice. Popping out other damage dealers is fine (not the tank, though), like Imp Swarm. They'll be left behind you and don't seem to last very long though. My range finder read from about 8-10 (waaay too nerveracking) to 10-15 or 15-20 to 20-25 (the range I was trying to stay in) to even as high as 35-40 without ever losing aggro. I'd like to think the DoTs were the key there, but I didn't really have a good way to explore this without risking having to start over. For about the first third of the fight I was moving directly away, with my camera in the mob's head somewhere, watching the range numbers - the later sideways slight works much better, I think, plus the added spell options. I took care to keep a huge space around me between the sea bottom, the surface, left and right obstacles, and nowhere nearly a comfortable space behind...
Worked the first time. Nope, doesn't drop a frickin' thing. Grr. :-)

It is useful to note that with today's gear (say, 550+) and a tanking specialization, it is possible to solo the Whale Shark without any special tactics. Namely, you have enough self-healing and health as a 550+ tank to directly take the brunt of the Whale Shark's hits.
As a Blood death knight, I managed this with 555ish ilevel, 180% mastery. Rotate cooldowns, and with the load of Vengeance you get s/he'll go down in no time. The Whale Shark melees for a bit under 300k damage a hit, though the hits do come very fast.

I just solo'ed 3 of them like they were nothing - and got no achievement. Is it broken or is there a "specific" whale shark you need to take out to get this achievement?

Using no pet (because he seems to disappear when you send him to attack - distance I'm thinking) and barely even back pedaled. Just dps'ed the sh*t out of him in about 10 seconds...
Not sure what the deal is...?

Solo'd as a disc priest. Took about 45 seconds. Kited him and just went nuts with

, and some
暗言术:痛
for good measure.
He never touched me, so I have no idea if he still hits as hard as he once did. But my DPS isn't great, so he's pretty easy to take down at this point.

So I go in with my frost/fire mage, legendary and just geared in full heroic gear prior to Warlords of Draenor and figure "why the hell not?", so my adventure begins. I find beastie pretty quickly (hard not to see something that big) and think "pft, he ain't nothin. I got him no problem" so i Time warp just for sh!ts and giggles and pull. I miraculously surive his first attack and kill him. Wide eyed and speechless that something from older content can still be so potent, i share my story with you guys. enjoy xD

I tried killing him slowly as a lv81 hunter. Kited him for a long time and kept hitting him with everything I had, but it was as though I wasn't even hitting him at all. His HP was unaffected but I saw no words on him to say that I was missing. Eventually he swam up fast somehow and 1 shot me. Did something change or was it just me?

Just killed him, very easily and quickly. I feel kind of guilty -- he didn't even fight back. :(

For many years of Trauma, and many years of Torment.
I strike at you with Vengeance, as I watch your deserved descent.
You struck me as my back was turned, when I was fragile and weak.
But now I'm back to fight you, now that I am at my peak.
So now I charge, into the abyss, valiant and strong.
Ready to pay you back, for myself and all that you have wronged.
The time is now, prepare yourself, it is only you and me.
My spear at the ready, from Hell's Heart I Stab at Thee.
May the Whale Shark Never Rest in Peace.

I was having a phasing issue whenever I got close to the whale shark while I was mounted on the seahorse, dismounted and I was able to get the kill.

You may care to download my Rare Love add-on over at
WoW Interface
or
Curse
.
It is simply one macro for all your Squirrel "love", pest and rare achievements through to the end of MoP.
The
我从地狱之心刺向你
is also included, for sake of completeness. It requires this NPC to be killed.
You'll spam press a macro button created by Rare Love but when the add-on itself kicks in there is a whole lot more, including progress tallies after each kill/love.
Most importantly, it runs lean and clean. Little cpu/fps impact and a tiny memory footprint.

Found another variant of this. It can be found in the Lightless Cavern outside the Primordial Observatory (Priest Seeker Quest). If you try and leave by swimming out, this 117 Million HP monster will unstealth and hit you for 8,436,907. Name is the same, but clearly this is a different breed.

This NPC can now be seen just out side the boarder of nazjarar on the other side of the wave walls in 8.2.
