This is the hardest demon of the hunter epic bow quest, and here is the best strategy i found.
(Strategy from TKA something)
Strengths:
* He does NOT predictably chase you. He frequently stops to fear (disorienting you and causing around 800 damage also) or will stop to shoot homing beetles at you
* The homing beetles basically prevent you from bandaging. They move extremely slow but hit extremely hard
* If you leave melee range (further than 2-3 range or so), he uses an instant cast fear spell that also does 700-800 damage instantly, and he can cast these quickly, almost seemingly chain casting. Shadow protection potions do absorb this damage, however, even with greater potions, he tears through them very fast. It's also likely that the fear will send you into the homing beetles
* Seemingly unlimited mana bar, so Viper Sting is useless
* Scorpid sting has very little/no effect on him
* Melees extremely hard and fast (200+) when in "normal" form (described later)
Weaknesses:
* If you use Wing Clip on him, it immobilizes him completely with "Crippling Clip" for 30 seconds (it must be Rank 3 Wing Clip)
* The homing missiles (creepings) are not fired when you remain in melee range
* He does NOT cast his fear when you remain in melee range
* Must be 'chilled' via Frost Trap prior to fully engaging
Strategy:
The trick to this fight is being able to absorb a fairly high amount of shadow damage, along with keeping his beetles (creepings) eliminated in packs with Volley. Being that Volley has a 60 second cooldown, your movements throughout the fight should be somewhat like an insect rodeo with a large crippled demon for your audience. This is the most difficult and most technical of all the demons.
* Confirmed to work as recently as of patch 1.6, the strategy is as follows. Drink a Greater Shadow Protection Potion, and wait for the timer to cooldown. You will want to apply this effect immediately after his fear damage is no longer being absorbed. If you wait for your health to be low and use a Greater Health Potion, you will be undercutting your damage absorption. Strictly leave the timer open for another Greater Shadow Protection potion. By the time your timer is up, it will be gone. Lay a Frost Trap and use auto shot to engage him and set of the trap. Feign Death and you will see that he no longer has his bright red color. Lay down an Immolation Trap or Explosive Trap and drink up to full mana, you will need it for this fight.

A quick note, in addition to the strategy above, the frost trap to "chill" his is no longer working. Don't waste time and mana while he is up.

Most strategies are out of date for this fight, so here is mine, I did it during the 2.0.1 patch with a Hurricane wielding (crappy) hunter.
I tried it several times buffless, just to see how it would work. I do not see how anybody could do this without buffs or pots at all, it's just not possible. Then I had a warlock and a priest help me out, this shouldn't be a problem for you to find, because if you're in a guild that can get you the ingredients for the quest, you should have some warlocks or priests laying around, it doesn't take long. Pay them if you have to, or you'll be pulling your hair out.
Use the warlock to duel you, and have him put rank 1 curse of recklessness on you, this is a debuff and you can reapply it during the fight. If he forgets, you will get feared and their is a good chance that you will die. The frost trap to remove his enrage still works. Use a 2 handed weapon just so you won't miss your wingclip, and use a rank 3 wingclip. Start shooting him, throw in a serpent sting if mana allows. When he gets remotely near, smash wingclip. If you do it right, he won't even get one hit off. If he does hit you, it will be between 200-400 damage, only one hit usually. Don't use concussive because it could slow him down to the same speed as the bugs, so the next time you go to wingclip him, the bugs will be hitting you as well. That's bad.
Then run away from him in a straight line, placing a rank 2 explosive trap between you and him at the edge of your maximum range. Shoot until the wingclip wears off, the explosive trap keeps applying damage to all bugs like a consecrate, rank 1 isn't enough, and rank 3 is overkill, save your mana. When root wears off, run away from the bugs until he gets close enough, and repeat. It should be him, 25 yards, a explosive trap, 6 more yards, and then you. Bandage early to start the timers, use the trick with the shadow protection potions, I used two. I was horribly geared and I ended the fight with 90% health and only used one bandage. By putting an explosive trap between you and him, you are basically in a 100% safe zone for the duration of the root.
If you cannot do this with a priest and a warlock, get someone else to do it for you, it doesn't mean you're a bad hunter, it's just not a very normal PvE encounter.. Some people say the fear is cheating, I disagree. All of the other fights took skill, but if you had no warlock during this fight, it would be 100% luck on whether you got feared into the bugs or not.
Also, once you start the fight, your friends can wander around and kill mobs in the middle of the fight, just not Solenor or the baby bugs. I did this fight with explosive trap, aspect of the hawk, and serpent sting. I did not use multishot or volley. Due to laying traps in mid combat, I believe explosive trap is the best strategy due to the 30 second duration of his root and the 30 second cooldown of the traps.
Good luck.

The Solenor fight can be the most difficult in the Hunter quest - he has a nasty fear and shadow damage attack, spawns scarabs and is surrounded by a lot of high level creeps. On a PvP server it gets even worse with his patrol path located in a heavily player travelled area.
Greater Shadow Protection Potions are your friend here, the shadow damage is unavoidable regardless of a resisted fear (at least in my experience prior to 2.0.1).
The fight has changed with traps in combat and your best bet is to use explosive trap to deal with the bugs. If mana is an issue then you will want to use a downranked Volley - the new casting time and no need to channel is a nice change.
Solenor is susceptible to Wingclip and wingclipping him will immobilise him for around 30 seconds. During this time use him as a pivot point to round up the scarabs he sends at you so that they are clustered and can be dealt with via explosive trap or Volley.
There are some interesting ways of avoidng the fear and making this fight a near gimme.
Curse of Recklessness from a Warlock will render you immune to fear as well as increase you AP (but lower your armour), because it is technically a debuff and not a buff it will not despawn Solenor when reapplied by that warlock.
Fear Ward only offers protection from one fear though there was a bug a while ago where if fear warded Solenor wouldn't even attempt to try and fear the hunter.
The fear causes shadow damage on strike as well, hence the need for shadow protection of some kind. Solenor can also fear you out of his range and reset himself, happened to me more than a few times.
Chill effect: Solenor needs to be chilled via a frost trap to reduce his melee damage upon you, he can hit quite hard while you move in to wingclip him. This feature has been on again off again working/failing for some time now. Set a Frost Trap and pull him over it, once he activates the trap, feign and reset him. Being that frost trap is bugged atm it may not work....yet again.
The easiest start i found was to set an Explosive Trap and pull Solenor onto it and run in for the wingclip then move to range, the initial Explosive Trap will give you some early control that is paramount to success in this fight.
Shadow protection potions, heavy runecloth bandages, a little luck and learning how to use the immobilised Solenor as a pivot will help you win this fight.

Just did this guy and encountered an interesting bug. I talked to him and dropped a Freezing at his feet. The trap went off while he was still in gnome form and froze him. After I hit him he stayed in gnome form and didn't send any bugs at me or fear me, all he did was melee me for a couple hundred. I tried this on the winterspring demon and it worked the same way.

Has the following abilites
Dreadful Fright
: A fear with added shadow damage
Soul Flame
: A flame shield which reflects melee damage back as fire damage.
Summons
Creeping Dooms
- Small beetles which hit 200-400 or so melee. They move very slowly however.
When you hit him with Wing clip he gains the debuff
Crippling Clip
which roots him in place for 30 secs.
Basic strategy, run in wing clip - being careful not to melee. Run to max range and dps. As the beetles begin to spawn start to slowly circle him. If necessary rinse and repeat.
Things to watch for, getting feared as you move to re-apply wing clip, hitting him in melee.

Wing clip no longer immobilizes him.
Traps still work, and volley has no cooldown, so the insects aren't a problem. Just kite him around.

If you are using a /target macro in order to find this mob, then know that unlike Simone and Artorius, the human form of this demon does not share the same name as it's demon form. This one's human form name is Nelson the Nice.

Certain paladin spells will damage and aggro him.
For example, don't ever consecrate if he's within range. No matter how many mobs may be swarming you.

I solo'd him today on my 72 hunter along with Artorius the Doombringer. Apparently, the demons are bugged, but in different ways.
When I talked to Nelson the Nice to start the fight, he never turned into Solenor. He stayed in his gnome form, and just walked up to melee me. He didn't reflect any damage, he didn't fear, and he never summoned any creepings. All he did was melee.
Needless to say this made him incredibly easy, I may have even been able to use a pet against him. And after I killed him I was still able to loot the head.
If there are still hunters out there after this quest, NOW is the time to kill Solenor!

I can confirm Trev81's comment that the transformation is broken but I thought id add the fact that the one in UnGoro didnt work but searing gorge and winterspring did.

As of feb 22nd, you still cannot use a pet on this one even if he does not transform.

As for today (28th March 2009)
-no pots are needed
-no other buffs
-pet off
-talents scatter shot
-talents extra range (survival) to make this trivial
-level 63 but 60 will do fine
-DO NOT TALK TO HIM GNOMES ARE SLOWER THEN DEMONS:D
Positioning: there a structure around AQ gate 27,91. Find area where you can reach Solenor but clear from scorpids and spiders.
Fight: He will appreach from Twilight camp as usual. Once spotted put Freezing Trap, Aspect of the Cheetah. Kite him (Concusive Shot, Freezing Trap when turning) to AQ20 gate. Make sure Serpent Sting wears off at the stairs then use Scatter Shot and run back down the stairs. Loot head.

Just did this as a level 60 hunter with decent gear (2/8 T2, 3/8 T1, random blues). He is bugged so you can attack him while in gnome form, which makes the fight VERY easy. It is not completely normally since Wing Clip is broken. Just have a friend clear the scorpions and such around the area and kit him all the way to AQ20 and back, it's very easy, just kite, nothing special.

If you are using a pet that buffs you character, like a wolf, then dismiss you pet before attempting this fight. Solenor interpreted furious howl as a buff from another player and ended the fight.
Now I am waiting for Nelson to spawn a third time.

useful info:
I got a pala friend who aggro'ed the one in un'goro accidentally
and killed her, I could still loot the head.
this worked on the one in silithus as well, and I suspect it will work on the others too...

Found my old videos on a random cd of vanilla WOW, killing the hunter quest boss's.
Really enjoyed these quests but the quality isn't that great as it was ages ago.
Enjoy

Boss was located in Northeast of
希利苏斯
and patroled around as a Gnome called
和蔼的奈尔森
. Shadow protection was key as it helped to stop the dreaded fear he cast, and wing clip was used to immobilize the Demon. Volley was used to clear the small mobs he summoned.
