Ancient Core Hounds don't hit very hard (200-300 on tanks). They have a long range area cast that does about 600-800 fire damage. Also a bite that should only be hitting the tank and one random area effect skill:
- 5s stun
- Spell casting and melee speed slowed by 50%
- 3s confusion
- 200 fire resistance reduction
- Maximun Health reduced by 15% (Magic: Dispellable)
-50% less Spirit/Intellect
This is basically a tank and spank mob. Face the dog away from the raid to avoid the fire area effect and at a steady pace burn the mob down. (Confusion and Stun may have the main tank lose aggro temporarily.)
Core Hounds can drop all Tier 1 BoE belts and bracers.

They preform the Bite ability on a random secondary melee target.
The damage should be around 1000 and they like to bite the same target several times.

Ancient Core Hounds will no longer respawn after you've killed Magmadar, the second boss in Molten Core.
They patrol within MC, and have a fairly quick respawn timer. You will need to dispatch them quickly, make sure to skin for the Core Leather, and move on.
Note that they do no despawn when you've killed Magmadar, they simply won't respawn again after you've killed them.

Those dogs are easy to handle, if you act like a team and everyone knows what to do. Basically just keep them from facing the raid or you will die. They have many incapasitations but they are easy to take down.

In the latest beta patch Blizzard added pet abilities for these, and they will most likely be one of the new exotic pets for hunters.
* Lava Breath (Rank 1): Level 1, 25 Focus, 10 sec cooldown. Your pet breathes a double gout of molten lava at the target for 2 to 4 Fire damage and reduces the target's casting speed by 50% for 10 sec.
* Lava Breath (Rank 2): Level 16 - Your pet breathes a double gout of molten lava at the target for 7 to 9 Fire damage and reduces the target's casting speed by 50% for 10 sec.
* Lava Breath (Rank 3): Level 32 - Your pet breathes a double gout of molten lava at the target for 13 to 17 Fire damage and reduces the target's casting speed by 50% for 10 sec.
* Lava Breath (Rank 4): Level 48 - Your pet breathes a double gout of molten lava at the target for 22 to 28 Fire damage and reduces the target's casting speed by 50% for 10 sec.
* Lava Breath (Rank 5): Level 64 - Your pet breathes a double gout of molten lava at the target for 47 to 63 Fire damage and reduces the target's casting speed by 50% for 10 sec.
* Lava Breath (Rank 6): Level 80 - Your pet breathes a double gout of molten lava at the target for 49 to 65 Fire damage and reduces the target's casting speed by 50% for 10 sec.

Can be solo'd (Just need one other person, for a raid group so you can enter.)
Just stack Stam and Dodge, put on aspect of the Monkey, Activate Deturrance (Not sure if I spelt that correctly.) and wish for the best. Got mine after two tries.

Someone please put a link to a video of how to tame these (not Core Hound,
Ancient Core Hound
) Or even just make a map showing where in MC these can be found for those who don't know. (I don't feel like going to MC to find out their co-ords)

Did it with myself(Prot Pally) and my friend(Hunter) it was kinda tricky to figure out but once we did it was easy.
He didn't have alot of health(8-9k) so I loaded him up with sanctuary and devotion(for the increased healing not armor) then started with Hand of sacrifice just before the pull. Once he got down to near death hit Divine Shield then lay on hands, Then I just proceeded to heal. Divine shield lasted perfectly until the tame was finished and he ended the tame with almost full health.

For people who don't want to putz around with sneaking around and corpse running with a druid, you can tame one of these while only killing two molten giants, two firelords, and one surger. 5manned this last night with a priest, the hunter in question, and 2 warlocks.
-The Giants at 70 are easy as pie. I had enough block value to wholly negate their attacks and even if they dropped aggro with their punt attack, they hit everyone else like girls. (For reference, I have 550 block value, meaning they hit for ~500 on plate, and probably 1000-1200 on cloth)
-The surger is annoying, but you can deal with it. Just keep shooting it.
-The real threat is the Firelords. Soul Burn (a
20 SECOND
silence) is as annoying at 70 as it is at 60. If you're going to kill these so you don't have to sneak around, I strongly recommend bringing at least 2 people who can remove magic debuffs. Also remember to kill the lava spawns; while they're obviously not horribly devastating individually, it's probably a Very Bad Thing™ to have more than 3 up at once.
Once those 5 mobs are killed, run across the bridge and hang out on the cliff overhang to the right. Eventually an Ancient Core hound will patrol up- this is your target. Have your hunter pump a bunch of damage into him then start the taming (and pray to god that it isn't a
Despair Dog
). Have your healer heal the hunter- the damage the Hunter dealt will stop it from deaggroing. If your hunter did it right, then soon after he'll have a shiny new 2-headed dog pet.

I have tamed both Uvuros (the green colored 70 core hound in SMV) and the Ancient Core Hound from MC. The MC hound has a relatively loud flaming/burning noise that accompanies him at all times, sounds pretty cool actually. Uvuros does not have this. Also the MC one does the screen shake when it walks (good for freaking people out), but this might be annoying to you depending how sensitive you are to it. Again, Uvuros does not do this.
Not sure if these little bonuses were intended by Blizzard or not but if they were it would make sense to have the one from the 40 man raid instance be a bit more special.

Really easy to tame.
As resto shaman i've helped my friend hunter:
1) Giants and fire elementals on top
- with pet he pulled giants, and we fell down to lava, pet died
- to loose combat we stayed there and healed up
2) Earth elementals downstairs
- if exiting the lava you'll stand as far from those two elementals as you can (on the edge) they won't aggro
- after healing up we killed them 1 by 1
- he get rid of his current pet
3) Taming Core Hound with Shaman (resto in that case, but other builds will do just fine)
- use Stoneskin and Fire Resist totems to reduce dmg done to hunter, so you won't have to heal too much and won't gain too much aggro
- hunter pulled core hound, and started to build up aggro
- when he was on ~50% hp he used healing potion to gain more aggro (till then i haven't healed him, not with direct heals, nor earth shield or healing stream)
- right after he used potion and was on ~70-80% hp he started taming
- when there was debuff i used Cleans Spirit (resto come in handy here)
- when taming i healed him with direct heals and (most importantly) i was using used
Wind Shock
every cooldown,
in that way shaman won't overaggro hunter.
(in many cases hunters say that healer easily overaggro them, and that is biggest problem).
Good luck, i hope it helped ;]

Taming the core hound in MC is soloable.
I and a friend (he came up with the idea when no one would help him) have both used this method successfully Illidan server Alliance side.
What you need:
Fire resist pot
Haste pot
Abacus of Violent Odds
Enough Resil to be crit immune
at least 10k hp
any other haste is helpful (but not needed)
As others have stated as you enter MC you can mis direct mobs to a throwaway pet and jump on the ledge to your right and feign there while your pet dies. Drink the resist pot. You now have one minute until you can use the haste pot with trinket. There are two core hounds you can tame...one pats by the ledge you are on and one that is up the path a bit. Either is fine but timing is critical.
Because the timing is so tricky it is best to bring several of each potion.... after the first few tries you well get the timing down and say hello to a new red core hound!
Edit: they shouldn't be able to crit you because of your level compared to them, but my friend thought he was crit so I used PVP gear incase

Hunter
Priest
Hunter
Hunter MD to me, and I did 2 shots myself.
Priest renewed/POM
We all prayed that he didnt do the stun/disorient-crap.
Edit:He doesnt keep the skills he has as an Elite, you get Bite and Lava Breath.

Tamed by me and a Prot Paladin.
Did a few pulls, then skipped the firelords by going via lava.
My Hunter is a Draenei with Herbalism, so 2 heals did help a lot.
Pulled the corehound, did a few damage, cast the 2 heals, started taming. Paladin was healing, and once he got near me on threat, he did Hand of Salvation. Now I'm a happy owner of a MC corehound! :)

Valkyre
Valkyre's Step by Step guide on taming an Ancient Core Hound without having to kill a single mob (with pics!
)
What you will need
1. Yourself
2. A healer (pref shaman or paladin for the fire resist)
3. Patience
I did this using two accounts, a ret pally in horrible gear and my hunter. Here's how it's done:
Getting into position without killing, dying, or pulling unwanted aggro
As it's been suggested, you can skip the two giants by veering to the right. What you need to do is jump off the ledge to the right of the Molten giants onto a small ledge below. This will make them bug out and de agg you since they can't reach you. Anyone who's run VC a handful of times will know this trick well.
Jump on down to this little ledge jutting out from the side
, giants will bug out and reset in about half a minute or less. You don't need any kind of buff or blessing, you'll only lose about 3-4k health tops.
I figured healing from
this point
would be a good idea because my paladin would be unreachable and so long as my hunter had agg I could provide myself with a safety net. This however,
does not work
because if you attempt to tame from the ledge above you will also end up getting a Core Annihilator linked with your Core Hound. So you'll have to take a chance and drop down below.
Be warned
- there is a core hound pat who comes around that area once every 15 minutes.
Next, you need to set yourself up properly. By that I mean prepare everything for taming. If you are new to the hunter class you should know that taming works in pairs only so long as you have aggro for the entire duration. I would recommend a threat addon like
Omen
to help you gauge your threat listing. For me, I used my
paladin
who really doesn't do anything more for me other than farm up mats (hence the poor gear).
Building agg and taming your Core Hound
Before attempting to tame your core hound, ensure you have a method of establishing agg and maintaining that agg for the entire tame duration. Get your healer to plop down fire prot auras/totems and all that fun stuff. For me I started my tame by firing off a steady shot and arcane shot (with a few auto shots in between) to get some agg. Then I proceed to begin taming just before the CH got into melee range. For my
healer
, I immediately
bubbled
myself so my first 12 seconds of heals wouldn't establish any aggro. After that wore off I used
Hand of Salv
proceeded by spamming Holy Lights. I never once drew agg from my hunter using this method. Other healing classes will likely have to tip toe more than i did and rely more on hots.
After that, I am now enjoying my
Core Hound pet
. It's not a difficult thing to do, just takes some patience and practice. If I can do it using two accounts I'm certain it would be cake for a duo to achieve. Most of my problems was coordinating my two toons at the same time. :)

Tamed a corehound solo with this set up.
Gearing
- 10,000 HP
- 31% dodge with Aspect of the Monkey
- 0 Fire Resistance
- Monkey w/ Improved for 5% damage reduction
Per attempt
- 1 Haste Potion
- 1 Nightmare Seed
I survived with 600 hp remaining.
Steps to solo-tame.
1) Get a stack or two of haste potions and Nightmare seeds. They are cheap and will help a LOT.
2) Get yourself attuned to the Core. Look elsewhere for info on doing this.
3) Zone in and swap to AotMonkey. The 5% damage reduction adds up fast.
4) You will see 2 giant dudes ahead of you. You want to run along the rightmost wall, dropping off the cliff on that side as soon as possible. One giant should hit you once, if you do this right. Land in the lava and swim downstream along the right hand side.
5) Step BARELY out of the lava on the right at the first opportunity. DO NOT take any more steps out then absolutely needed, or you will aggro the group nearby. No pats go near this spot: it is always safe. Feign here and eat up to full.
6) Now you must run along the edge of the lava pool, to the left, until you reach a sharp bend upwards in the ground. You will aggro the two mobs to your right: just keep running, and as soon as you reach the bend, feign.
7) This spot: at the bend, is your final location from which you will tame. It is not entirely safe: two patrols pass nearby. However they are on long patrol rotations, and thus easily feigned around.
8) Spend some time feigned or ready to feign, and get to know this location. You should see several things:
- (A) A high overlook, viewing down in to the lava pit you swam.
- (B) An arch over the lava further ahead and to the left.
- (C) Your location looking out at the arch and overlook, along the lava's edge
- A large corehound, patrolling from the overlook (A), across the arch of stone (B), and down behind you to (D).
Bear with my text-art here for the layout...
/
/
| (A)
\
--------
\ /
Lava |(B)| <--- Arch
Pit / \
---------------------
(C)
(D)
The Corehound will spend 2:30 at A, then walk slowly down to D, arriving there in approximately 1:15. He spends about 1:45 at D, then moves back up to A, in about 1:15. A 2nd corehound will path up from down below D, turn around, and path back. He can aggro you in the spot you are standing (as can your main target), so when they are in transit, watch and be ready to feign.
Your goal is to be ready when the main corehound is sitting at A. As soon as he begins to move, pop your Haste Potion and Nightmare Seed. Within about 2 seconds of moving, he should be in range of your taming spell, although still across the bridge. Immediately begin taming. He should reach you with about 5 seconds left of taming due to having to run over and across the bridge. If he does not stun or crit you, you should survive. If you don't, try again, one dodge or resist can be all that lies between you and fiery companionship!
Good luck, he's lots of fun.

I Just got this core hound on my night elf :D and I'm level 70 at the moment.
I had my boyfriend to help me with his 80 Human Death Knight and his 65 Draenei shaman.
He went in and cleared the first 2 giants, in front of the bridge. Then he jumped down to the right on a ledge and cleared the elementals and a couple of the patrol core hounds.
I then went in on my elf and him on his shaman, down to the same ledge. I had 'Shoveltusk Soup' lvl 70, 'Potion of speed' lvl 70 and 'Eixir of Lightning Speed' lvl 70. These all have haste rating to make your tame beast go faster, and they stack. Best way to get haste potions and elixir's is from the Auction House.
My boyfriend put down fire resistance and stoneskin totems next to me, and put rock shield on me before running away (He kept pulling aggro from his heals.) As the corehound came down from his patrol on the mini cliff near the bridge, I used all my haste potions, and tamed asap. It took about 2 tries, but it worked.
I tried when i was level 68, for 12 hours, to no avail.. I suggest you don't attempt this under level 70 unless you're very well geared and have a good healer, preferrably a shaman with totems, as heals can pull aggro, and you cannot tame a beast unless you have 100% aggro.
Happy Taming :D! Hope that helped a tad.
There's video's on YouTube with step by step instructions on where to stand, and the easiest way to grab them. :)

Listen ppl heres some gd advice...
I have tamed a lot of rare pets and this is one of the hardest.
I know you all get sick of hearing patience and u think there is more to it. I tryed wiv a number of strats but this is how i managed...
Do not bother until u are 78-80... infact just 80. There will be plently of time there. I know if u want to have a go and theres ppl around to help thn fine but this is how u do it solo.
THINGS U NEED!
1.YOU lvl 80
Things u MAY need:
1. a hunter lvl 78-80
2. I used up all pots be4 i tamed wiv nothing but a small haste pot... this is not needed.
3. U may run across haste trinkets ( fezziks poketwatch is gd: as can see qs in northrend help.)
4. I did not use this! But if u want u have speed potions from valhalas qs im not sure these do the job but worth a shot.
5. YES PATIENCE IS GD... but listen its rough down there so keep a cool head.
As suggested, the best place to stand is in the centre area on the edge of the lava facing core hound perched atop the rock glacier thing.
You want to go around first to target it and thn go back and w8 until it gets close enough.
Aspect of dragonhawk on.
Press tame beast and thts it! there is no complex info on this. All u need is 80... Position... And just more than a few trys... Remember the next try u r going to give up may be tht tame.
Happy taming!

Today i did this with my hunter friend, we had abit of unluck cause of the fact we chose a despair hound. I'm a pala retri speced with holy gear.
My friend is a hunter level 62, thats the lowest level you have to be to be able to tame them.
I just killed the 2 molton giants and we both jumped down besides the lava. I then killed the 2 annihalators thats standing close to the lava. After that we did the following to give him his pet.
Basically we did it as that we both got around 40k threat on the target, I'm tanking at this moment with healing agro. Now i stop healing as much and basically wait till my hunter friend pulls agro were after that i pop HoS on myself. Basically it reduces my threat enough to be able to spam heal my friend to make sure he stays alive. He will just start taming right after the next despair and we succeded, though it took sometime to get it properly done.

After a dozen tries of using a priest or a paladin, I had a couple guildies get on one of each. The method we eventually devised was this. Have the priest (hopefully discipline) bubble you up with all the strongest bubble methods they can muster, but no HoT's. Then start the tame. Wait for the bubble to break, then have the paladin throw up his Divine Shield and start healing you. You should be able to finish the tame before the paladin's bubble breaks. I'm level 62 and I now have a corehound. So it does work.

Solo tames at level 72 quite easily. Just took a little patience for patrols to be in the right place. I felt a little iffy going in because I was unsure what levels people were when trying, so here are my specifics for reference:
Use the strat from the video posted above (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpIxkYyqFHY
) for placement of your character.
1. Aspect of the Monkey
2. Elixir of Mighty Fortitude (+350 HP, 1 hr guardian elixir, lvl 70 req)
3. Elixir of Lightning Speed (+45 haste, 1 hr battle elixir, lvl 70 req)
4. Scroll of Stamina VII (+63 stam, 30 min, lvl 70 req)
5. Scorpid Sting used to pull (3% less chance to hit you)
6. Fury of the Crimson Drake trinket use (+140 haste, 20 sec, easy quest reward in Borean Tundra)
7. Potion of Speed (+500 haste, 15 sec, lvl 70 req)
8. Start Taming
8. Profit
Used random stamina/haste gear with trinket and potion which took taming time from 20 seconds down to 13. Buffed up to 14.5k HP. I had 80% life after tame. I had ZERO fire resist. Felt over prepared (even tho a level 80 on this page had difficulty, probably forgot aspect of monkey..). Hardest part was the aggro range which seems like 25-30 yards even at level 72.
I know this is old, but I'm a new huntard and just wanted to give you somethin to guage yourself with before going in.

Just tamed this as a fresh 62. All I did was have a 80 hunter Misdirect it onto me then have a pally heal me through the 20 seconds. Sacred shield didn't work cause I was only 62. Just use Scorpid sting / Distracting shot / Monkey then you should be good. No trick to standing anywhere, just cleared to him and channeled. Had to watch the threat near the end but still got him first try.

Easy to tame now @ patch 4.01 with moderately equipped hunter - lvl 80, mid 4k gearscore, 25k health:
get into Molten Core
Jump down to right before first big rock guys
swim thru lava to area to right...
you may have to kill a few elementals so you don't aggro them while taming
wait for Ancient Core Hound to come by... they do patrols
Dismiss current pet if needed.
Tame it... no pots, no nuthin needed.

These guys have an annoying aggro radius, even at level 80. Far greater than any other mob in the instance. Be prepared to have one charge at you from behind and pull a group with it if you plan on soloing MC.
Luckily, they're pretty easy to down. Just really, really annoying.
They also can give you a debuff that basically translates to "sit here and wait ~15 mins if you want to kill any bosses here".

tamed this at a level 70 hunter, it was a bit of work as i went into the instance and did it on my own no BOAs. the trick was to run past the rock guys and jump down onto the ledge, the lava is ok too but the ledge is better. feign death and then once everything resets rez your pet and kill the elemental one at a time. dismiss your pet and wait for the pat. the fire elemental are bit tricky, youll wanna use all your CDs. i happen to have herbalism as a profession so as i pulled the corehound i popped the heal and i just barely survived. if you dont have herb youll want a pot or something.

I CAN confirm that core hounds do still drop loot. After going into MC trying for the rare plate pants (which are supposed to drop mainly from core hounds) I quickly got antsy when they weren't dropping loot. After trying to find answers on Wowhead and failing, I resumed to keep killing the corehounds just in case and managed to get a couple claws and a green leather belt. I'm still keeping up hopes of getting the pants for my transmog set :)
