Immol'thar will sometimes knock a party member up in the air, but other than that has no real threatening abilities. However, he does spawn little "eyes" that must be killed ASAP. Designate someone to kill them as soon as they spawn, because if they are allowed to wander about, they make the encounter harder. They die pretty easily, so it shouldn't be a big effort to kill them.

This monster must be killed for the Dreadsteed quest. You have to kill elementals around the 5 spires around and above him to drop the shield around him. He's a very easy battle, no organization required for him... looks cool as hell though.

Solo'd as a 70 feral Druid in tanking gear and bear form. The real problems I had with this fight is when he teleports you into the air, the fall took about 2500 damage each time. Eyeballs I just save my Mangle for, it practically 1-shots them. And I just Demo Roar, Faerie Fire, spam Lacerate, and Maul when I've got extra rage on Immol. My Imp. LotP keeps me up through his damage, which is very little. He also has some sort of an enrage, probably a frenzy that needs to be Tranq'd, but there's nothing you can do about it unless you're a Hunter.
The key is to drag him up on top of the stairs so when he teleports you into the air you have enough time to pop out and heal yourself quick and go back into bear form before he gets down to you. Wash, rinse, repeat.
He really isn't all that hard once you get this strat working, actually a decent challenge compare the rest of the DM bosses.

Immol'thar is a pretty nasty boss. He has a trample attack that will do damage to players near the target of the attack which normally is the tank (i.e. the attack doesn't damage the tank, but friends near the tank). It hits for at least 600 on "soft" targets. Party member should either stay away from the tank or get some healing to counter the trample damage.
Occasionally he will cast
Portal of Immol'thar
on what appears to be a random player. The player will be teleported to the center of the area and fall to the ground taking fall damage. This damage scales with health, and I think the loss is around 15%-20%. The teleport spell is from the arcane school and arcane resistance will help you resist this attack (completely avoiding the teleport). If you land on top of Immol'thar you risk being hit by the trample attack, so Immol'thar should be dragged away from the center.
During the fight Immol'thar will continue to summon
Eye of Immol'thar
, and there seems to be no limit to how many he is able to spawn. The eye has a weak melee attack, but much worse it will apply a debuff on it's target also called
Eye of Immol'thar
that will slow the targets movement speed, attack speed and cast speed. If more that one eye is attacking a target they seem to apply this debuff synchronously, and furthermore reapplies the debuff shortly after it expires. As these debuffs stack several eyes are able to slow you seriously down. To counter this you have to kill the eyes fast. Since the eyes will aggro the healer if noone else attacks them a melee character can kill the eyes at the healers location and avoid trample damage at the same time. The slow debuff is from the shadow school and shadow resistance will help resist this attack.

In order to reach him (and the dreadsteed if you're a lock) u must either have the Crescent key (
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=18249
) or a rogue with a good lockpicking skill.

If you've specialised in Engineering, Seaforium Charges will also allow you to break down the Crescent Door and access Immol'thar.
Additionally, you need to shut down the five pylons scattered throughout Dire Maul West to eliminate the forcefield surrounding Immol'thar's prison:
One pylon is located in the Capital Gardens;
Two pylons are located in the Court of the Highborne (the upper balcony);
Two pylons are located in the circular area right outside Immol'thar's prison.
The pylons are powered by the arcane-immune
Mana Remnants
and
Arcane Aberrations
surrounding it - there are eight of these elementals in total at each structure. You can usually pull the elementals in pairs, but sometimes they can be pulled solo or, if your group is unlucky, in a trio. Keep in mind they are suspect to a warlock's banish ability. Once you've killed all eight, the pylon will be shut down. The prison's forcefield will dissipate and Immol'thar can be engaged after the five pylons are taken out.
Also, don't forget to fight
Prince Tortheldrin
in the library after you've defeated Immol'thar.

Since patch 3.0 the possibility exists to tame Exotic Pets by Hunters (Core Hounds for example) it is possible that some hunters think Immol'thar can be tamed. Although Immol'thar looks a lot like a Core Hound. Immol'thar can't be tamed as a Core Hound cause he is tagged as a Demon creature.

An interesting note is that when the 5 pylons are down, the night elves that surround Immol'thars prison will begin to attack him, casting weak fireballs. They don't really do much and I don't think they attack you very much. A good idea to try maybe, when you take down one of the last pylons next to the prison, quickly engage Immol'thar and take aggro, you should have a bit of help from the night elves. :)

One day I got sick of Naxx and Ulduar and Azjol-Nerub so I came with my Rogue(lvl 80 full Sub specc and rest assassination as primary and full Combat with Assassination as secondary). This guy was pretty easy 2 kill.I set on secondary specc and here I go.
A few notes:On my server u were able 2 change between primary and secondary spec in 0,5 sec.
I let him spawn some eyes and then killing spree and take 'em all out.
When he threw me in the air I've changed on primary spec and then Shadow Dance and Shadowstep behind him.
And when he enraged I shived him(I got on OH Anestethic Poison) and so bye bye enrage.I've cleaned the area for a lil' lock doing his Dreadsteed quest.

Finished off all of Dire Maul West solo as a somewhat 'twinked' out 60 prot paladin. I have 3 pieces of pvp gear and 2 pieces of ZG gear. Using Seal of Light, Judgment of Light, glyph for a 4-target Hammer of Righteousness, plus the crusader enchant on the
Ancient Hakkari Manslayer
means I'm almost topped off on health all the time on trash. A timely placed bubble heal is usually all it takes to get through the bosses. The nelfs here took Immol'thar down 15% before I even joined in. I was never tossed in the air and it was an easy fight. Died twice in the process of clearing the wing. Once on Tendriss Warpwood because I didn't realize 3 of the protectors were still up (oddly enough I was able to take down the boss but none of the protectors) and I died in the upper part near the ancient spirit. After eliminating one of the groups of skeletons all the mana remnants and aberrations suddenly aggro'd. Besides those two mistakes, it was easy to do but tedious.
Funny thing is, I was only in here once previously with a group a few weeks before and we wiped several times before I gave up. The death knight in the group kept death gripping everything to him and pulling much larger groups than we could handle and pulling another set even after a Mana Aberration wiped everyone's mana. The death knight was not tanking it but he sure loved to pull it. I guess I should have been a bit leery when I joined the group as they were corpse running from a wipe.

Trying to get to this mob on for the Dreadsteed of Xoroth (warlock) quest and having a b. of a time reaching the boss due to the forcefield. I already knew you have to clear the Pylons surrounded by voidwalker looking entities. There are actually two of these Pylons immediately within the boss room of Immo'thar. When clearing these didn't help, I looked at a map but Lightheaded doesn't show maps in game. The first of the five Pylons is on the grassy rectangle just when you walk in the instance. The second and third Pylons are up ramps on either side of the ramp down to the tree boss, straight behind the first Pylon.
Incidentally, since you have to go upstairs anyway to clear the second and third Pylons you should probably talk to the Shen'dralar Ancient who will give you a quest to kill Immo'thar and Prince, who are the last two bosses to complete you Dire Maul West wing part of the King of Dire Maul achievement and give you some rep to boot.

I would just add to the good info, that you don't need any of the keys now. After patch 4.1, all doors within Dire Maul doesn't require a key to open.
EDIT: Found out that in the Northern Wing of Dire Maul, you do require keys, but they are easily obtained during the instance. Don't know about the Eastern Wing.

To get to Immol'thar:
Enter Dire Maul West.
Proceed to the first courtyard, and kill the mana elementals to deactivate the crystal.
Proceed to the second courtyard and turn right (North) through the archway. Go up the stairs and kill the mana elementals up there to deactivate the two crystals.
Drop down to the area with Tendris Warpwood. Go through the door at the northwest corner of his courtyard and follow the hallway to Immol'thar's Prison.
Kill the mana elementals next to the two crystals there. One is off to the left of the hallway. The other is off to the right. That done, you can get to Immol'thar.
Once Immol'thar is down, you can take the other hallway to the library with Prince Tortheldrin and face him. He's not attackable until his demon is dead.

They say every dog has his day, but this hound has been long since forgotten--even the prince he shares a dungeon with has probably forgotten him. He was optional after all.
How is this not the right answer for

As of the start of patch 6.0.2, he died to the mobs that run in before our party could get in to attack him. Make sure you tag him quickly after bringing the shield down. About time those protectors did their jobs though.

Immol'thar is not killable unless you first kill all the arcane elementals protecting five pylons spread throughout the dungeon.
The fastest route to take out the five pylons is:
Enter dungeon, pylon #1 is in the center of the courtyard directly in front of you.
On the west side of the courtyard (opposite entrance) is a bridge with three underpasses. Take the right (north) one,
not the ramp down
.
Enter the large doorway on your right (north). Inside, go up the ramp in front of you.
Turn around 180°, facing east. Pylon #2 is directly ahead.
Cross the bridge on your right (south). Pylon #3 is on the other side, opposite the second pylon.
While standing at pylon #3, face northeast, toward the bridge you just crossed. There is a stone sticking out of the ground next to the balcony (two smashed jars next to it). Use the stone to jump up on the balcony ledge, next to the bust of a stag.
Drop down, aiming for the bottom level of the courtyard (same level as Tendris Warpwood). If you are at full health, the drop will not kill you.
On the opposite side of Tendris (northwest corner) is a door. Enter it, follow the hallway.
As you reach the end of the hallway, pylons #4 and #5 are at your 10 and 2 o'clock.
If you killed all the arcane elementals at all five pylons, an NPC will /yell and Immol'thar will be accessible.
A final note: you don't need to kill any bosses prior to Immol'thar, including Tendris Warpwood.
