I know it's purely a bit of fun or whatever but it IS a bit of a shame this wasn't an axe. Would then be useful for all melee classes. As the step up to raiding this time is a bit harder this would have helped quite a lot.
Not a QQ but it would have been nice :) I guess my rogue (old main) approves although shammy (new main) is looking kinda sad tho :( .

Even though there is str on this weapon, several theory crafting sites are reporting this is the 2nd bis sword (pre-raid) for combat rogue. The first is the token cata krol blade (which you will pay through the you know what for making it not really worth it IF you can find it). Another option is the mace from heroic stonecore, if you swing that macey way.

Aaaaaactually, it's not quite that simple. It's good for DW Frost DKs (and DW unholy!) but it's not great. Haste is an okay stat for the spec, but Crit (which the sword has) and Mastery (which it lacks) are superior to haste.
Wrong. DW Unholy places haste as a priority over most other secondary stats (barring hit up to the 8% soft cap). Haste both increases swing speed (which procs Sudden Doom more frequently, which, in turn, allows for dark transformation to proc more often) and also increases rune regeneration rate. For DW Unholy, this sword is very nice, as haste is valued above both crit AND mastery.

An interesting note to any Sword Dual Wielding DPS, seeing how this is not a Unique weapon you could potentially find it on two different toons and dual wield this. Is that worth the time? Not sure but who wouldn't want to dual wield two flaming swords!

The little hunter's hands shook slightly in excitement as she gathered the Tol’vir fragments from the hot Uldum sands. At last, at last, she had found it! Months ago, she’d vowed never to return to archaeology after finding the long-sought
Vial of the Sands
recipe, but that was before a conversation she’d had with a little rogue friend of hers. The rogue had told her about the rare and mysterious Scimitar of the Sirocco, a flaming sword that could be found only by digging in Uldum and gathering Tol'vir artifact fragments. When asked why she wanted it, the rogue gushed, "It's so shiny!"
Stifling a smile, the little hunter had wished her luck in her search. “I know what it’s like to search for a rare item, and I hope you find it quickly.”
The little rogue looked down and scuffed the toe of her boot in the ground. “Well… I was hoping
you
could find it for me.”
The little hunter blinked in amazement. “Why me? D'you know how much time I've spent doing archaeology? It’s time for you to get
your
fingernails dirty, my friend!”
But the little rogue persisted. The little hunter had already found more Tol’vir rare artifacts than the rogue, all but the sword and staff: thus, it made more sense for the hunter to keep digging. They both knew that due to the mysterious and magical nature of archaeology, each rare could only be found once by each searcher, so the hunter had a better head start. “And we’re family,” the little rogue pleaded. “We trade materials to help each other out. How many times have I given you
embersilk cloth
for your tailoring endeavors? And you gave me the potion so I could learn how to turn myself into a dragon, and… well, okay, I still owe you for that, actually, but… I gave you the
Steam Tonk Controller
. That was fun, right?”
The little hunter sighed and put her palm over her face. “If I search for it, I swear, this is the favor to end all favors. By the light of Azeroth, if you
ever
-”
“Oh, I know, I know,” the little rogue hastily assured her. “I just want this sword. Nothing else. So if you happen to find the
Staff of Ammunae
first, hey, it’s all yours.”
The little hunter pondered a moment. Her friend had a point. That was the great thing about being a hunter: she loved how
everything
could be a hunter weapon. And that staff
was
rather pretty… “Very well,” she said decidedly. “I will find your sword.”
As the hours turned into days, and the days into weeks, and the weeks into months, the little hunter had bitterly regretted being so generous. Many were the times that she cursed the amount of Night Elf digsites, wondering why she had to search for Night Elf artifacts at all when she only wanted Tol’vir digsites. Fossil digsites were also a thorn in her side, but thankfully she found fewer fossil sites after putting together the final rare artifact,
Extinct Turtle Shell
. She still received a frustrating amount of Night Elf sites, but it was bearable, and her chances of getting Tol’vir sites were definitely increased.
And now, the magic had finally worked for her, not against her. On her 151st solve, she’d pieced together yet another
Sketch of a Desert Palace
(seriously? How many desert palaces could there
be
, and why were all the artists so terrible?), and there it was. The magic told her that her next item was the Scimitar of the Sirocco - it had appeared far sooner than she'd dared to hope. It took a few seconds for it to sink into the little hunter’s brain, as she was so used to the continual disappointment sent by the RNG, the viciously unpredictable Random Number Gods, who presided over those practicing archaeology. Then, deliriously happy, the little hunter sped around Kalimdor, getting the last few Night Elf digsites out of the way and now here she was, piecing together the final necessary Tol’vir fragments to create the glowing sword.
If the little hunter was happy, so was the little rogue. She used a type of transmogrification magic to make her current sword look identical to the scimitar, and pranced around in Orgrimmar, admiring the fiery trail that streaked from the glowing blade. They both agreed it was even better than the pictures they'd seen of it, and the sweeping trails the weapon left when swung around were remarkably pleasing to the eye. Others nearby also commented on the visual effects of the weapon, much to the little rogue’s delight. “It was totally worth the wait!” she crowed, doing some practice jabs and swooshes with the sword. The little hunter rolled her eyes in tolerant amusement, wished her friend well, and headed off to the nearest inn for some food.
She felt giddy with freedom as she sauntered along the dusty street with her spirit cat prowling at her side and chasing the occasional spiny lizard. Free of the archaeology grind, she could go anywhere, do anything, seek any adventure she wanted! The whole world was at her feet! It was a brand new day on Azeroth! She could-
“My friend, I hear you’re quite accomplished in archaeology.” Someone tugged at her sleeve, and the little hunter turned to see a little paladin she knew gazing hopefully at her. “I hear you just found the Scimitar of the Sirocco for our rogue friend.”
The little hunter opened and shut her mouth, speechless with dread.
“There’s a sword, you see, called
Zin’rokh, Destroyer of Worlds
, which was made by trolls,” the little paladin continued in a beseeching tone of voice. “I really, really want it, and you’re
much
further along in archaeology than me. You’ve already found a few rare troll artifacts, and I haven’t found any. And we’re friends, we share everything, right? I make gems and glyphs for you all the time. I just
really
want that sword...”
It was a brand new day on Azeroth, all right. And the little hunter knew exactly how she'd be spending it.

There is one big reason you should take the time to grind out this blade. And that's the fact that the glow on the blades is the brightest weapon effect in the entire game. Stand still and you don't even see the sword anymore, it's just one big sword-shaped mass of pure energy. Run around and you trail fire.
Anyone who dual wields these through transmog becomes a one-man rave.

Writing this as of Shadowlands pre-patch. It definitely still leaves a 'trail of fire', and still looks really cool, especially on Ultra particle density. For WWs it sheaths on the back, but for other classes, such as Rogues and Warlocks, it sheaths on the hip. But you're probably not pouring over these comments because you're unsure if the sword is cool or not. So here is some information I have gathered from reading and personal experience, hopefully someone finds this useful.
The order in which my Tol'Vir rare solves appeared were:
圣甲虫风暴坠饰
>
孩童皇帝的戒指
(first 2 in the first 50 solves) >
蠕行之爪
>
阿兹亚基节杖
(at around 130 solves) >
热风弯刀
(488th solve)
I started doing Archaeology in 2014 and got some Fossil rares (including the mount) and the first two Tol'Vir rares doing the Kalimdor method. I took a break until 2016, when I got into Archaeology again and got the Tol'Vir pet and mount by digging in Kalimdor and, later on, by doing the Mantid Pandaria method. During this time I solved all the Night Elf rares as well, and accidentally got
辛洛斯,诸界的毁灭者
(in around 50 solves). After getting the mount I shelved Tol'vir Archaeology for good, or so I thought.
In 2020 I decided I
needed
this unique sword for xmog. A perfect example of a person creating trouble for themselves. I read all the WoWHead comments about all the Tol'Vir rares, trying to get a feel for how much time it would take me to farm this. The only definitive answer I could come up with is "RNG is RNG." There were always people who posted just to gloat that they got the mount or the sword on their first solve. Or those who complained about the "grind" because they had to do 30 solves for the mount to pop. Then there were the poor souls who had over 1000 Tol'Vir solves before they saw their 5th or 6th rare. Some had given up along the way. I even saw a screenshot of someone who got the Scimitar on their 2546th solve, as their 6th rare. Many cautioned not to begin this grind. So, naturally, I began the grind.
At first, I was optimistic, but the number of solves without seeing a rare grew to 100, then to 200 and so my hope dwindled. I read that it was sometimes easier to start fresh on a new character and try to get the desired rare in the first 3 solves rather than try to get it as a 5th or 6th rare. I level archaeology on 2 alts and got 2 rares on both. Both times it was the toy (pendant) and the ring. I did about 30 more solves on each afterwards without seeing a 3rd rare, so I kept going back and forth between my main and the alts. I think this strategy works for some people, but it's not guaranteed to be better. Any way you do it, it's really all a gamble and a matter of luck.
I tried both the Mantid and Kalimdor methods on my main Archaeology character. Supposedly the number of dig sites in Kalimdor decreases for a race if you've solved all the rares for said race. Since I had solved all the Fossil and Nigh Elf rares, I figured I would get a lot of sites in Uldum. I had mixed results. Some days I did get one Uldum site after another and was able to 6 solves in an hour. Other days, I felt cursed and got Night Elf and Fossil sites over and over again. I found that in a profession absolutely layered with RNG (number of fragments, keystones dropping, rares popping up...) the last thing I wanted to deal with was the RNG of dig site spawns. So I ultimately gave up on Kalimdor. If you do go the Kalimdor route, don't forget to go back in time in Uldum because the assault zones from 8.3 prevent dig sites from spawning in the zone. Also it helps to be a class with access to teleports such as mages or druids.
I did most of my farming in Pandaria. When the Hallow's End event was up, I used the instant cast broom mount and farmed out some Pandaria archaeology achievements by farming all over the continent. I'm still 1 pristine away from the Seeker of Knowledge title. This was a good way to stay motivated, because at least I was getting achievement points and seeing progress in something. After the event ended I used the Sonic Locator to only farm Mantid sites. I would estimate that in 1 hour of farming I was able to obtain 30-40 crates which equated to 5-7 Tol'Vir solves. On my alts, I farmed some Legion and BFA zones (with flying) and found it gave pretty good exp (leveled from 110 to 120 on one character while farming crates). I personally don't think it's as fast as Pandaria, but you can test for yourself.
488 Tol'vir Solves (over 550 across multiple characters) to get 5/6 rares sounds like a lot, but I actually consider myself very very lucky. I know there are those who have fewer than half those solves with the same rares, but so many have twice that number too. I am happy I didn't get the staff as my 5th. As my Zin'rokh find demonstrates, Archaeology is all RNG and super unfair. Someone who doesn't play a class that can use the item and isn't looking for it at all can just get it in a day, whereas another person can spend literally years and never get it. It's a reality you have to come to terms with if you decide to look for any of these ultra-rare items. It really does suck.
Some tips if you do farm any of the rares:
Use
暗月火酒
to speed up gathering. Or you can get forager's gloves (for Pandaria). I never had luck getting those so I stuck to the water. In Legion/BFA you can get glove enchants for the effect.
Watch a show or listen to audiobooks to pass the time
Set a daily, weekly or monthly goal for number of solves. Try to focus on that instead of being disappointed each time you get another common solve. This grind feels like a psychological test
Consider which class you do this on. A druid or a dwarf character may be good options to consider.
If you're reading this around Halloween, try to use the instant cast mount to your advantage, as it does speed up the process considerably
If you have engineering, items such as
安全传送器:加基森
or
虫洞发生器:潘达利亚
saved me a bit of time
Consider side-goals like achievements, titles, other rare items etc
Be prepared to do this for a long time. I was anticipating over 1000 solves, and ended up pleasantly surprised. But also don't let the outlier comments discourage you in one way or the other. Just because it took someone 10 solves and someone else 1100 solves, doesn't mean that it will be your experience.
Finally, unfortunately there currently isn't an easy trick to get your desired rare. There are tons of theories about how to make the mount or the sword 'pop' but it's an RNG grind at the end of the day. It also means it's one of the few items in the game that remains extremely rare. I have seen fewer people xmog to Scimitar than I have Scarab Lords. Not saying the sword is more rare, but even when compared to the most rare items in the game, it retains its prestige. Best of luck to you all.

Just got this as my 734th tol'vir solve overall. I'm currently at 62/63 of all the archaeology rares in the game with the only one left being the Staff of Ammunae also from tol'vir. GOT IT!
Without a doubt the hardest grind ever... 2731 mantid solves wich resulted in 538 tol'vir solves. The order was "Ring of the Boy Emperor", "Pendant of the Scarab Storm", "Scepter of Azj'Aqir", "Mummified Monkey Paw" and FINALLY "Scimitar of the Sirocco".
Meanwhile, i feel very lucky since there was still the Staff rare and i confirm the existent feedback - the time span between rare drops DRASTICALLY increases as we have more solves.
The best advice i can share with you is to set little objectives wich prevents you from burning out and ruining your experience. For example, 1 hour for each time you play and no more. Set that goal and keep at it without thinking (listening to podcasts is great). I promisse you that when it drops, it's the best feeling ever!
Did it through Pandaria method.
Best of luck to everyone chasing this beautiful sword

I have managed to complete Archaeology and have all 63/63 rare artifacts solved that are in the game. Honestly, this is not a farm that I can recommend to the sane-minded people out there. However, if you do want to collect all the solves, then do
NOT
do this farm without having something to watch/listen to. Here is my breakdown of all the races and number of their corresponding solves; (I'm posting this knowingly to discourage any of you to ever commence this torture)
Drust: 72
Zandalari: 96
Demonic: 131
Highmountain Tauren: 115
Highborne: 270
Ogre: 136
Draenor Clans: 303
Arakkoa: 221
Mogu: 829

Mantid: 5622
Vrykul: 22

Orc: 11
Nerubian: 34
Night Elf: 951
Fossil: 658
Draenei: 16
Dwarf: 812
Total: 13,140 Solves
Quiet honestly, I don't think anyone on EU/US or any other region has more solves than this, I consider this to be a very unlucky run. Had to solve 1,000+ Tol'vir trash for the Staff of Ammunae alone.

After 2000 tol vir solves this is what I can tell you. The more rares you find the harder the next is to find. I would guess something like 20% first rare, 10% second, 5% on the third, and so forth, by the time you get to the last 2 rares they are very hard to find. I did 9 toons with archeology solving tol vir only rares, i found ring>toy>mount about 7 times, ring toy staff one time, and ring toy scimitar on my 9th toon. I decided to dedicate time to Alts after my main got 4 rares by 300 solves then didnt find the staff or scimitar and had over 1000 solves for tol vir, thats 700 with no rare! after talking to many people doing archeology and noticing several people finding the scimitar as the 3rd rare or even sometimes the 2nd! and you can always get 3 rares in under 50 solves, at most 70-100 in my experience. The fastest way to do this would be to start in Legion you want to level arch to 600 and buy the keystones for the weekly race that you will be solving to greatly increase your crates and levels of arch per hour. after you hit 600 then head to pandaria do Lorewalkers Reputation you would want a addon called handynotes, and handynotes lorewalkers , you can get this done in 30 minutes or less with this addon showing you exactly where to fly. then just do mantid method, if you can afford it buy mantid keystones I was able to get about 50 crates per hour doing this. this is not easy and takes a very long time. this is the rarest 1 handed sword in the game that is obtainable and the illusion leaves a trail of flame and smoke behind it. Good Luck! your gonna need it
