This early in the expansion I did my research and looked around multiple different areas to find the best place to farm almost all of the new Volatile materials used in tradeskills. I've managed to find the best areas to farm every single one expect for Life, which im still in the process of finding the best area for. (The one in Hyjal was nerfed recently). Anyway, below you will find links to each locations youtube video.

I've personally found
Algaefin Rockfish Schools
to be particularly ladden with these. I farm them off the coast in Twilight highlands where they respawn faster than I can deplete them. Gotten all 120 I needed within 3 or 4 hours of farming and leveled my fishing to boot.

Assuming the drop chance for Muddied Water Elementals stated here is correct (which it isn't, since these mobs can drop multiple volatile waters at a time), your chance to get 25 kills with no drop is about : 1-(0.13/2)*25 = 23,375%. This is about the same chance as doing an heroic for a specific item, and then seeing it drop. I personally wouldn't go to the casino with those odds, but it does occur.
Dude, where did you learn your math? From a hobo that lives in a cardboard box? How the hell do you have a 23,375% to NOT receive an item? The highest percentage you can go without receiving an item is 100%, in which case it is
impossible
to receive that item.
Now, the correct way of doing this would be:
(1-0.13)^25=0.03075
Which is a 3.075% chance of looting 25 corpses in a row, and not getting any volatile water.
1 is representing 100% chance
0.13 is the represented 13% drop chance.
We minus the represented chance to drop(13%) from 100% because we want the chance of failure, not of succession.
^25 is the represented amount of times he has tried, and failed at receiving the item.
In case you were wondering, the /2 part is to adjust for 1 or 2 drops.
You actually completely ignore this. As there is a chance to drop the item,
then
there is a chance to receive 1 or 2 of the item.
Edit - Cleaned it up a little bit to make it look nicer =)
P.S. Is someone just following me around and downrating all my comments for no apparent reason? Or did i actually get this wrong?
P.S.S. Whoops, well after looking at the comments below, I feel like an idiot, and this would be a good time to /sorry. Thanks for telling me this information though.

Lol I guess I got downvoted because people agree with some kid who doesn't understand the roles of commas and periods in math are swapped in a lot of countries.

Just fished for an hour in Mount Hyjal and got 15 Volatile waters. I did 30 minutes at Nordrassil, then another 30 minutes at Shrine of Godrinn. I got 7 and 8 at each site respectively. There were no fishing nodes in either location.
Fishing skill at 330 and a +30 fishing rod, a +100 glow worm and some +15 Captain Rumsey's Largers = 475 total fishing skill.

I've spent about 2h in total, looking for a good spot to farm these volatiles. As far as I can tell there's not really a "the best spot".
I first went to Uldum and fished from the pools along the coast and river, in 40 minutes I had 10 volatile.
After that I headed over to Twilight Highlands to try farming the elementals (I hate farming from killing). I spent about 10 minutes there because it was boring... And it rendered me 1 volatile.
I then headed up river to try and fish from the Highland Guppy pools. In 1h and 10min I had collected around 30 volatile water and the pools are quite fast on respawn. So that's where I'll be farming them. Flying up the river, around the Loch and then down the river and fishing from all the pools.
I should say though that I could go through a lot of pools without a single volatile, but then you could get like 2-3 volatiles from the next one. So it's not like you get 1 per pool, it's more like 1 every 4th or so.
Hope this helps someone looking for a nice spot to fish volatiles.

From the time I reached Lvl 52 w/ my hunter I started swimming from Land's End Beach in Tanaris into the Uldum shoreline around Cursed Landing and farming Volatile Water. Occasionally there are pools/nodes but mostly just open water. I used the region to grind up my fishing to max with effective fishing at 650 I no longer catch any junk like torn sails or empty rum bottles. Overall Volatile Water catch percentage is 11.2% - 13.5%. I've been selling the Volatile Water because I haven't got to the point where I can make anything out of it. Must be useful stuff because I've been clearing over 1000G per day selling these in stacks of 1 or 2.

A great place to farm these from are the Muddied Water Elementals in the Twilight Highlands (Verrall Delta).
Using a prot pally and pulling 3-4 mobs at a time, I was able to farm 30 of them in 45 minutes.
Something to keep in mind with this method is that the drop rate seems to vary greatly. 1 minute I was having 2 drop off every mob, and then 10 minutes would pass without seeing a single one.
Hope this is a useful alternative to fishing.

Out of 100 casts I cought the following:
41 Sharptooth
27 Volatile Water
20 Lavascale Catfish
12 Blackbelly Mudfish
I thought this was an unusually high percentage. I know this is a small sample and maybe I was just lucky - but I hope not, hopefully its a good spot!

Ok...
So I just fished up 28 volatile water. Overall i cought 111 fish/volatile water.
We know that every time i cast into a node i caught something.
So that means AT MAX i cast my reel 111 times.
However, most of the volatiles that i caught were in groups of 2 or 3.
3 times I only caught 1.
But we are not going to base it off the amount of times i cast because I didn't keep count and it's not a healthy number to go off of.
So based off of the 111 items that i caught from nodes and that 28 of them were volatile water, that gives us an average of 31.08% drop rate.
Which rounded off generally means I caught a volatile life every third to fourth cast.
However, since we know that i caught the volatiles in groups of 2 or 3 on average, then we know that you're not ACTUALLY catch one every 3 or 4 cast.
So if we just randomly round off the information we will find that it is more likely that you will catch a random amount of volatile life mostly 2 to 3 but occationally just one about every 8 to 10 casts.
I would say based off these stats it's going to be faster and easier to fish volatile life in Twilight Highlands than it will be to try and kill off elementals for them.
Fishing may be a bit less entertaining, but it's also less stressful, easier, and has a higher survivability rating.
Good Game gentlemen.

I also tried using the new fishing lure to see if it increased the odds it appeared to be the same. Also while I was fishing a guild mate was also fishing in Highbanks with her fishing hat on and was about to catch 26 water in the same amount of time. I will try the fishing hat later on with longer periods of fishing to see if there is a change or not but might try the fishing hat who knows maybe it does help

There really appears to be no "decent" way to farm these things. I done a few hours of fishing these myself. You are way better off farm fishing the fires in the fire pools and then selling/trading those for waters. I also get the waters from time to time on mining but again, not a direct way to farm waters. The various mobs that drop these have low drop rates, too. Other option is the Alchemy daily transmute of living elements, but that's a once a day cooldown.
Over 50 posts on this item but still no definite/good way to farm. Oh well.
Edit: I'm almost to the point of just farming mats/gold other ways and just buying these off the AH.

Granted that is only a small sample but that is consistant with what I have heard previously about being about 30% drop rate.

Best place i've found to farm Volatile Water is Tol Barad Pennisula. If your a Fathom eel user like i am, you can start at the wardens base camp, and swim, or walk if you have Elixir of Water Walking(or if your a DK frost path) and travel the outs of the area and while fishin for eels, you'll get the Volatiles as well. There are quest that will basicly take you to TBP best fishing areas, so might as well do all 3 at once. The quest that takes you to steal 22 fish,(Rustberg Village) at those docks there is normally about 5 nobs of eels, and if you do it in the right order, half those nobs will respawn while your still there, just don't rush through. Once done there, travel over to where Shark Tank is(The Cape of Lost Hope), in that general area you'll get about 6 to 12 nobs, depending on the time of day and its respawn settings, plus usually 2 ore viens there, elementium normally, but sometimes a rich pyrte vien well spawn, and be fore warned, you'll probably have to fight something at the cape, either a dead sailor or Tank, so kill the sailor if you have a choise, cause tank is an elite, and even if you do kill him, his respawn rate is like 10 seconds. After that, travel to the area where you kill the guy on the horse, collect 15 pieces of wood, blow up 10 boats, which ever of the 3 dailies you'll get(Wellson Shipyard), and you can normally find about 5 to 10 nobs there, again, don't just rush through it, or you'll miss out. Once done there, take the water way up and around the fort, not the land way, got up the river and around by the bridges, and you can get about 6 to 8 more nobs heading back to the base camp. In all you should get about 20 to 50 nobs in one trip, if your the only one farmin it which is best at about 2 am server time. My best trip so far is 53 volatile waters, 112 Fathom eels, and 9 sealed crates, plus the other randoms that drop around the island.
Also, you can fish up the turtle mount there, i got mine from the nob that spawns right behinde the alliance base camp. Hope this helps, and happy fishin.
One other thing i should mention, if you don't have the dailies, but just want to farm, grab some Elixir of Water Walking, you can fish while that is active, and you will be able to fish the nobs without agro. Just remember, the elixir is only good for 10 minutes, so bring a handful of them, and if there are none in AH, you can farm the mats for it in Crystalsong forest in just over an hour, you'll need 120 Glassfin minnows to make the 60 Ethereal oils it takes to make a stack of Elixir of Water Walking.

Well that kind of depends on whether or not he means 15 casts, or 15 pools, really.
Well he said pools, so...I'm guessing he means pools.
Now 5 from 60 casts all of a sudden becomes 8.333% drop chance per cast (and thats if each dropped in multiples of one!).
Everything in the entire game drops in multiples of one. But I know what you mean. Again, I think you're trying too hard to infer something other than what was said. He said he got 5, so....I'm guessing he got 5. If I got 9 in 5 'hits', I wouldn't say I got 5.

I don't understand what the hell Blizzard's mentality is with this. It makes me really %^&*ing pissed off. They really think it's appropriate to make an item that is commonly used for multiple professions a horrible drop rate? At least volatile air has one specific site with a low-decent drop rate. Now there's NO dedicated site for volatile waters; unless you, being the super human that Blizzard thinks we all are, will farm for hours on end.
I suggest you get your *!@# together Blizz, and learn what's realistic or not.

By far, the best place I've found to get Volatile Water is the Auction House. On my server they are anywhere from 15-25g per water. A quest takes me about 3-5 minutes to complete, often completing multiple quests simultaneously, and I can get about 15-20g per quest. So I just farm a bunch of quests with endless random rewards and rep, and then purchase them on the AH when they are cheap. Seemingly far more lucrative in regards to time then fishing them or farming kills. Often you have characters who sell them on the AH as they've happened across them while doing whatever it is they do so you can keep an eye out for really great deals.
I am not trying to be facetious with this comment, just providing an option for people who are not currently aware of ways to get these items and are reading this thread for additional ideas.
EDIT: Also, this would not apply to all volatiles. For fire, ironically enough, I suggest fishing, as you can get about 20-30 in about 5-10 minutes if you manage to get the lava pools at the correct time.

Tbh I don't waste my time trying to fish these up or farm them with the drop rate being so terrible. My suggestion to anyone is to make better use of the Potion of Treasure Finding, especially if you have a tailor, and hope for the best. With my SPriest(Tailor) I usually manage about 30 different volatiles an hour in Tiny Treasure Chests while farming the Trogg groups on the W side of Deepholme, and about 25 stacks of Embersilk. I understand that Water isn't a guarantee but you're less likely to nod of doing this and the huge gold difference makes the AH a viable option for filling in whatever you end up short on.

1 ele lockbox
62 volatile water
22 tiny treasure chests (contents hyphonated)
- 3 volatile earth
- 2 volatile fire
- 11 volatile life
- 9 volatile air
- 21 pyrite ore
- 5 elementium ore
- 86 embersilk cloth
- 75g loot
I was farming on an affliction warlock with felhunter pet, fel armor ilvl 354 full pve, a key trinket i used was Sorrowsong (it gives you an average of 855 sp when farming, making it better than firelands hc trinkets, only in this scenario!).
My tactic was just put Corruption, Unstable Affliction and Bane of Agony on every target and use Haunt whenever the CD allowed, aswell as instant shadow bolts. Also when i had 3 or more elementals on me i'd use shadowflame. I had to use Soul Harvest after clearing from the bottom to the top of the stream each time usually.

0 Volatile waters.
With VW going for over 300G a 20 stack I need to find a more reliable place to farm then TH cause I don't think it's cutting it anymore.

While farming these today from
elementals at Twilight Highlands
, from one mob I got
Zulian Swirling Shield
, and
Volatile Water x2
which I was there for. I tried fishing in Uldum before that, but I left since I only got 1 water from 5 pools.

I must have terrible luck, or drop rates were changed... again. In about 500 casts, I managed to get only 8 Volatile Water. So, about 1.6%. :/
It's an excuse to farm Lavascale Catfish and rank up your fishing.

I love farming these. I've gotten so much gold from it.

10,336 Casts
Allowing for an average time (to cast, wait for bite, and loot) of 30 seconds that equates to over 86 hours of solid fishing. Seriously, there are much more fun things to do in the game - unless you're using a bot of course :p
Personally, I prefer to just get what I get while I'm mining ore, somehow it seems a marginally less mind numbing pastime than fishing and I usually end up with 20 or 30 volatile water after an hour or two.

After about an hour of fishing in Uldum starting just outside Ramkehen, flying over the lengths of water bodies and rivers, ive gotten 18 VW in said time frame. So IMO best over all way to get these. After the same time farming the elementals in twilight highlands, ive gotten 3.Fishing trumps killing mobs hands down, hope this helps.

I don't know if this was someone tryin' to mess with people but WoWHead claims these drop off of the
Huge Toad
in Hillsbrad Foothills. I tested this and it is false. Nothing at all drops off of these toads. Just a heads up for those of you who, like me, wanted to farm the creature that has the, claimed, highest drop rate for
Volatile Water
.

Killing the Muddied Water Elementals is a Good place to get Volatile Water, I had to kill about 5-10 to get my first drop of 2 Volatile Water, After getting my first drop, they started to drop more frequently. Hope will be the same for the rest of you guys, i Personally like this spot to farm Volatile water other then fishing.

i don't know why but i fished every pool i came across along the shoreline of Twilight Highlands and didn't get any Volatile Water at all. meanwhile, just the area around Ramkahen was fairly fruitful. not calling it a definite, but Uldum is my zone of choice for the VW's.

That about Huge Toad dropping Volatile Water (33%) is a joke right ?
EDIT: I was actually dumb enough to bust that myth, to go there find that poor creature annihilate it with one hit and... wait for it... - no loot at all !
10mins of my game time wasted, lesson learned, moving on...

I have to agree with Procz and other posters that the
Muddied Water Elementals
are the best source to farm for Volatile Water. I spent approx 10 minutes killing them at lvl 87 (killed maybe 15-20) and received 12 Volatile Water without using any potions or anything.

In addition to farming, if one of your characters has Alchemy as a profession, you can make Volatile Water via the spell Transmute: Living Elements. All you need is 15 Volatile Life for each transmute, then go to the respective zone (Hyjal - Fire) (Deepholm - Earth) (Uldum - Air) (Vash'jir - Water) to get the volatile you want. The downside is that the transmute spell can only be done once per day (cooldown resets at midnight) and you only get 15 volatiles per transmute.

I needed in total 80 volatile for some crafting stuff, and so far,i can tell you the
泥浆水元素
npcs are great to farm for it,in 15 minutes i got around 45 volatiles.
My ilevel is 507 so i 1 shot everything, basically.i went from the base of the river where they spawn, near the Dragonmaw Port and killed everything from there to the top of the river,to their spawning limit. By the time i finished killing them from bottom of river to top,the elementals at the bottom already respawned in numbers
Hope it helps for your volatile water farming :)

Level 90 Marksmen Hunter no pet, IL 474, Twilight Highlands. I just got back from this place and here's what I got in 15 mins off Muddied Water Elemental.
25 Volatile Water
2 Greens
71g in vendor trash
So if you think about it, that's around 100 Volatile Water , 8 greens and 284g an hour. Pending on if the greens and trash drops like that.
Just to back up what I said ^ I did run #2 and this is what I got from 15 mins.
26 Volatile Water
1 blue gear > not greens x2
75g in vendor trash

Enslaved Waterspouts are better farming than Muddied Water Elementals. It really pays off in the long haul for 120 Volatile Waters to make a Vial of Sands. I had a great system of doing one circuit on land (lake shore), and when I was faster than the respawn rate, I'd hit the Enslaved Waterspouts under water. Druid Walrus form FTW! lol If you can get a buddy to help you farm, send them to the Muddied Water Elementals. GL! :)

After clearing the entire riverbed in Twilight Highlands of Muddied Water Elementals seven times from top to bottom, here's what I've got:
197 pieces of vendor trash.
2 greens.
15 volatile waters.
Looks to me like the drop rate has been nerfed or I'm just unlucky today. :(
To be clear, I did not use a potion of treasure finding because there were none available.
EDIT: After reading the comment by seasaint7, I decided to try out the Enslaved Waterspouts. I'm glad I did! The drop rate on these is significantly higher. After killing all the Enslaved Waterspouts in the area about four times, I had 37 volatile waters. There are less of them in the area than Muddied Water Elementals, so you might have to wait for them to spawn a time or two, but that's unlikely. Also, when you kill an Enslaved Waterspout, it releases a very angry water elemental who then takes vengeance on the Twilight Hammer mobs in the area. Amusing for sadistic b@stards like me. :P

In 37 minutes of farming
泥浆水元素
in twilight Highlands I collected 54
动燃之水
, three green items, one blue item and grey trash worth about 92g.
While the droprate is not so great, their respawn is very fast and they will follow you for quite a distance, so you can run around on your mount and pull groups of them, even though they roam quite far away from each other. I think that the huge numbers in which you can kill them makes up for the lower droprate and makes these a reasonable source of the volatile waters.

I have been looking for a decent place to farm these, and so far my best results have been with the
泥浆水元素
in Twilight Highlands (
here
). The drop rate is not incredibly high, but they are all pretty close together and the respawn rate is quick. I could not even do a full circuit of the area before some of my kills starting popping back up.

I just farmed them for exactly 30 minutes (the muddied water elementals in Twilight Highlands around 69,49). Drop rate was pretty mediocre. I got:
57 volatile waters (almost 2 per minute)
198 crackling crystals (trash worth 20s a stack)
65 shimmering shards (trash worth 43s a stack)
Other trash worth ~48gold (including a green or two, some trash items like grey boots, belt, etc)
None of the drops except the volatile waters were worth the flight but given that the waters go for 6g 20s on my realm, those alone are worth ~350g on the AH.
Is a half hour of your time worth a little over 400g? Up to you I guess. I don't feel particularly rewarded or disappointed.

30 kills today on
泥浆水元素
(Muddied Water Elementals) and no drop at all.
Has this been changed to fishing only?
Edit: *sigh* Turned in quest for the Water Cores (to open the portal to Org) and the 2nd kill after gave 2 Vol Waters. Nevermind.

Hello everyone, I have made a really nice guide on how to obtain
Volatile Water
.
So first of all, you want to come over to
Twilight Highlands
.
Once you are arrived at the farming spot the only thing that you have to do is to kill the
Water Elementals
, but before you start farming alone, it is actually much better to create a group farm in order to obtain way more Volatile Waters and also, when farming in a group you will be able to put some markers down so people have their own farm area.
So open your group finder and search for
Volatile Water Farm
. If there is no group available, you can always create a group yourself by opening the group finder, go to custom, and then select the option to start a new group.
When you have created or joined a group, the group leader should put markers down on different spots. For example, he has put a yellow marker at my farming spot so all I had to do is kill all the adds in my area.
After about 1 minute, the leader should call out to start looting. At that point stop killing the adds and start flying to people's farming spots and start to loot everything. When you are done looting, go back to your own spot and you just start killing the adds.
The more and faster people kill their adds the faster other adds will start spawning.
I hope this has helped!

Make a 5 man team, all dudu's, 200 - 400 water per hour :) Pop a potion of treasure finding and eat bear tartare ;) It's sick, all I have to say. This made me rich, very, very rich, like riding around on a giant spider rich.

In the Twilight Highlands spot, killing
Muddied water elementals
, I got 118 in 371 kills in ~20mins as a druid flying and moonfiring everything
+ ~170 gold in greys and greens and a jewelcrafting recipe

As this drop rate apparently keeps changing for the Muddied Water Elementals, I'll leave an update for right now in early 2019. Being able to 1 shot them and fly between I got easily over 100 volatile waters in 30 minutes. Decided to go to 30 minutes in case my early drops were a fluke but it seems very reasonable as long as no one else is there. Mobs respawn before you can kill them all. You will have periods where you kill 10 in a row and not get one but you'll also get 4 mobs in a row that drop 3 so its more about the over all rate which is pretty good right now if you're still looking for these old items.

I ended up getting 51 Volatile Water in 35min, more often than not going 20+ kills without a drop using a mage, frustrating, druid would likely be better suited for this farm because of all the swimming.

Farmed Volatile Water from the Muddled Water Elemental in Twilight Highlands, right next to Dragonmaw Port, for approximately 45 minutes and picked up 136 Volatile Waters. They respawn almost instantly so you'll never be without killing one. There are quite a few so if there are others farming, group up and share the loot and you'll gain these fairly fast. Happy farming! (as of 04/21/2021)

Just checking in with a comment for Shadowlands as of patch 9.2:
If you're on this page at this point it's likely because
动燃之水
is a key component for
转化:真金
, with 12
真金
needed to create the still lucrative
时沙之瓶
(
Vial of the Sands
) - which has maintened its status as the only two-seater flying mount that can be acquired/crafted in-game with gold.
Farming
泥浆水元素
s in the estuary portion of Twilight Highlands is still seemingly the most reliable way to acquire
动燃之水
, preferably with a druid (instant cast flight form, Moonfire) and
寻宝药水
running.
In just over 30 minutes with a potion popped I acquired 110x
动燃之水
, 9x
动燃火焰
(also needed for
转化:真金
), 3x
燃铁矿石
, 175x
烬丝布
, an
源质宝箱
, 10 Catalysm-era greens with a disenchant value of ~500g, 111g worth of vendor trash, and BoE world drop
飞矢吟唱者腿甲
at iLvl 41, requiring level 35.
The
动燃之水
I farmed alone is currently worth roughly 4,000-9,000g in total depending on server, price fluctuations, etc. So it's reasonably worth the effort farm yourself to use or sell as of 2022 (and beyond?)

2022-06-18, from 19:47 to 20:07 (for those not into military/24hr time, that's a late 7pm - early 8pm timeframe) I farmed Muddied Water Elementals for 30 minutes, and received 42 volatile waters. I farmed the same timeframe before this in Uldum, trying to proc them off of elementium veins (rich & regular) and got only 7. So the Muddied Water Elementals are still working well. Be advised you can go up to a dozen or more elementals without seeing any drops, but when they do, it's usually 2-3 at a time.

Either I am lucky, or the drop rate has increased: 30 Minutes today in Twighlight Highlands = 140 Volatile Water, 6 Volatile Air, 8 BOE greens, 42 Embersilk. Used Potion of Treasure Finding.
