Keep in mind you can use raptor strike more than once every 3 seconds more likely than not.
This may not be the ultimate glyph but a pretty much constant -20% damage when in melee range can save you. This glyph seems fairly underrated but I haven't tested it out yet either.

It makes for an OK PvP glyph in
lower-level
situations.
Hunters have several tricks up their sleeve to avoid being in melee range, but end up there often anyway. Death Grip. Charge/Intercept + Hamstring. Crippling Poison. Curse of Exhaustion. Slow/Frostbolt. (Etc, etc, etc.) When Disengage and Frost/Freezing Trap are on CD, what can you do besides Raptor Strike? At least that incoming Mortal Strike/Backstab/PoM-aided spell will hit for 20% less.
I can see this being a decent way of increasing survivability especially for lower-level PvP brackets and stamina-heavy twinks. Before DKs came along I had a 59 twink Survival hunter (back when Survival was considered all but unplayable) with ~8k health and 1200 AP unbuffed. To give my opponents a sporting chance I'd refrain from using ranged abilities -- and I still owned. Now a hunter twink who actually uses his bow/gun, has this glyph, and Raptor Strikes
when appropriate
, would still be taking quite a bit less damage. Except for min-maxers who try to one-shot everything, stamina is great for twinks and 20% less damage taken is almost as good as +20% stamina.
TL:DR
Really meh for PvE. Decent for twinks (19-59).

Buffed in patch 4.0.1 to grant damage reduction for two more seconds (up from 3 sec).

Right now, it's really usefull glyph. Raptor strike is instant, so you've got the buff immediately and while you are in melee (whatever you are doing there I don't know :) you can have mostly perma 20% damage reduction (5sec. reduction, 6sec. CD on Raptor Strike).
Nice stuff against rouges, and probably against every melee class when you need to get out of them. I like it :)

Uses Raptor Strike on your mouseover, and if you don't mouseover anything it uses it on your target. Great for hitting totems & pets while you run by.
One of the better major glyph choices for pvp. Since raptor strike got changed to an instant attack you can use it whenever you happen to be in melee range, and with the change to glyphs you don't really give up much to get this. Recommended for surv and marks, as BM you have less freedom with the BM glyph being so strong but it's still not a bad choice.
Edit: In cata, with the change to glyphs, this is also really good for PvE. As a hunter, the only major that can directly increase your DPS is the Trap Launcher glyph (reduces focus cost by 10). After that it's all personal choice. I recommend this; 20% reduced damage can make your healers' lives a lot easier and keep you alive in situations where you otherwise wouldn't make it. It's not all that hard to position yourself in range of something to raptor strike on most encounters, either.

Considering the number of bosses with predictable periods of heavy AoE damage in Cataclysm, I'm personally finding this glyph to be quite useful in PvE.
You do lose a bit of DPS from having to dance into melee range (Which isn't even necessary for some bosses like Argaloth, as you're somehow simultaneously able to be in range for Raptor Strike and ranged attacks due to their weird hitbox), but survival is almost always a higher priority, and this definitely helps when you're dealing with hits of as much as 100K AoE damage from some bosses.
EDIT: I wish people would bother to give their reasons for downrating things. I've prevented my death by using this glyph too many times to count.

On Sinestra (who lacks the bizarre hitboxes of Nef and Cho'gall, the other two bosses where I often use this glyph for damage mitigation), I try and use this on every flame breath in p3 after the buff wears off. In 10 man, that can be up to a minute or so, but mitigating the damage from that AND wracks is almost worth the DPS loss. In a perfect world, healers would heal through it, but healers have a load of things to deal with in this fight. Especially easy to do if you're kiting a cutter (I tend to kite sideways and then up thru to melee, giving me an opportunity to RS).

Bosses in Firelands that...
...have 5-5y min range
Alysrazor: helpful in H mode when she's grounded. You'll stack in her melee range anyway!
Majordomo: very useful in scorpid phases, use the glyph when incoming damage is getting high.
Ragnaros: you might want tu use this before predictable high damage in case your HP is low or your healers are busy.
...don't have 5-5y min range
Beth'tilac: not 100% sure about the gorund phase, but when she's upstairs, she has normal ranges and a rather big hitbox. This can cause issues with crossheal-range, as we need to attack from behind. When she's downstairs, the glyph could also be helpful once she's got a few frenzy stacks.
Lord Rhyolith: The hitboxes of his feet are
huge
which also causes pets to die because they run into the lava trying to stay "behind" the feet. Could be helpful in p2 heroic, when damage is getting high. But normally you've got no time for such things.
Baleroc: Hitbox can cause issues if you are a crystal-soaker. Tell the melee to stand at melee-max-range to make the crystals spawn as far from the boss as possible, but you won't be able to use the glyph. You'll want to use it (dancing) in H when you get more than 8 stacks.
Shannox: not 100% sure either, but there's no reason to stand on top of him anyway.
...My opinion: Lord Rhyolith and Baleroc should definetely have the 5-5y range, due to the nature of those bosses the min-range can cause trouble. Beth'tilac maybe too.
P.S.: when I'm saying that the glyph can't be used in a specific fight, it's meant without dancing. Of course you can always run into melee range, hit RS and go back, but you're potentially losing a substantional amount of damage. Nearly all heroics require very high damage nowdays, so that we can't afford to do such things. If it saves your ass, then yes, do it, becaus dying usually the bigger damage loss... :)

Raptor Strike wont exist after MoP cause they are removing all melee weapons for ranged classes and all ranged weapons for melee classes and so no more Raptor Strike or Wingclip D:

For PvP and especially In arenas you'll very often have melees giving you no rest. 20% less damage taken on demand with a potential 80% uptime for those moments where you really need it is the same as about 1500-1600 resilience at level 85.

This glyph is great for pve, damage reduction when hunters have far less than other classes. It is meh at best for pvp, and here's why: 1. hunters have no expertise, and this attack often gets dodged or parried. 2. The reduction only lasts for a few seconds. 3. You have to be in melee and if you are in melee range you are not effectively damaging your target or avoiding damage from melee classes. Even if I was using this glyph i would prioritize getting out of melee range first with things like disengage or masters call or even wing clip. Best pvp major glyph choices for mm would be disengage, master's call and concussive shot (underused and under-appreciated!)

In Mists of Pandaria this glyph has changed.
OLD: Glyph of Raptor Strike
Reduces damage taken by 20% for 5 sec after using Raptor Strike.
NEW: Glyph of Mirrored Blades
When attacked by a spell while in Deterrence, you have a 100% chance to reflect it back at the attacker.

This glyph has been amazing in PvP so far (lvl 83 at the moment, patch 5.4). It's like warrior spell reflection except people generally don't know not to cast at you. Popping this in the middle of a pack of casters focusing you is beautiful.

This Glyph gives you a staggering 100% chance to reflect spells while deterrence is active. I HIGHLY recommend this glyph for PVP as I was made a believer through constant BGs and Arenas.
This glyph is very powerful in PVP, especially because of its obscurity. Most casters won't stop attacking you when you have deterrence up because either:
A) They don't notice
B) Why would it matter
B IS THE REASON WHY CASTER SUICIDES IS A GROWING PROBLEM
This is a great glyph to have when your hunter is the target of some serious caster burst, as it will not only negate the damage, but it will send those roiding spells right back at their unwitting caster.
Chaos bolt? No problem!
Frostfire? As if!
Starsurge? Hope that druid wasn't too attached to that 30% of his health
As an added bonus, it reflects fears, cyclones, and hexes too! After watching hundreds of casters succumb to their own spells just when the battle was turning their way, I say yes to Glyph of Mirrored Blades, and you should too!

As of December 18th, this glyph has been bugged for me for at least a while now. This is my no brainer pvp glyph; it feels wrong to not have it!
They've apparently fixed the bug with CTHC talent that affected the other Deterrence glyph that added a further damage reduction this week so hoping for a bug fix soon and will submit a detailed report via tickets later.
If it works again I'll update this post.
