Silk Cloth can be farmed fairly easily when level 60 from the "Scarlet Monastery" . If you are grouped and do a 5 man run of SM you will have more than likely obtained a Stack or two of this by the end of the run. You will get even more by having a Level 60 friend run you through it.
This Cloth is great for Mid-Level bandages (First Aid) and (Tailoring) If you chose it as one of your professions.

The only benefit of farming cloth in instances is the amount of mobs and that you have it all to yourself. The droprate is about the same for elite instanced mobs as normal mobs (about 30% for silk)

So... Is there any good way to get silk when you're under level 60? The only thing I've heard is that SM is a good way to get silk... Well, my bloodelf is lvl 23.
So how am -I- supposed to get silk then xD
And I don't know any level 60-70 friends that can help me.

Another good place for farming silk if you're only in your low to mid 30's is central Arathi Highlands where the Boulderfist Ogres and Witherbark Trolls are. Both have a good drop rate and I got a full stack in about 30 min.

Stromgarde is merely mediocre post 2.3 (since the humanoids are no longer elite) I got a single piece of silk every 3 or 4 kills. I'd say Scarlet Monastery is the best place to farm this now.

Really the BEST way to farm these is to go Arathi Highlands at 64.28, this is the spawn point of Forzuk and his little 3 adds.Just wait him spawn and then start killing him and the adds aswell the all respawn INSTANT when u kill em..(if you dont belive me go try it)and as of patch 2.3 he is non elite so he is easy to farm even from lvl 45 players, i farmed this 10 minutes(with my 60 level warrior) and i had like 6 green items , 5g from kills only 65 Silk Cloth and some junk trash , sold em and make up 3-4g
Seriously someone comfirm this

It might just be my imagination, but it seems the drop rate for several of these places has changed dramatically. I have tried out the Boulderfist Ogres in Arathi and the Crushridge Ogres in Hillsbrad and found that the drop rate seems much lower than the 29-30% listed. As a 70 looking for a quick silk fix, I'm gonna recommend SM as you never lose aggro and mobs still drop regularly.

Umm i dont really wanna let on my big secret.. but the galak centaur from thousand needles just north of freewind are superb! they drop wool and cloth (2 at a time) but are levels 25 to 28! easy to farm for low levels, not to mention the copious amounts or iron, mithril, silver and chests that spawn in the caves....

There's no real argument here - it is by far the easiest to farm silk in SM, for an AOE class at least. On my 70 lock, I had 7 stacks from an armoury and library run, which took about 20 minutes overall.
I much prefer instances for cloth farming - the mobs don't lose aggro and run away.

Another method for farming Silk Cloth is, if you are high enough (done on a level 37 Paladin ret. spec) go solo through Gnomeregan, I got no where near the first boss and I had 100 silk. Not as high in level as soloing SM would be.

Well, I just made a DK to farm cloth for my lower level 'main'. Decided to hit up Scarlet Monastery (all four instances) and had quite a bit of fun.
At the end of my run, I had 185 silk, ~10 mageweave and a couple wool. That wasn't even the thing that got me excited, though. I had SO MANY GREENS to sell, I'm going to be able to live comfortably on my 30 priest until at least 60.
I've made about 265 gold on my priest just selling greens and skinning, and this should at least double my gold.. and it took me about an hour!
Bottom line: Silk - Scarlet Monastery

Well, on my server silk is officially worthless.I can bid on silk, wait a few days, and vendor the silk for profit. Buyout averages 50s to 1g 50s. If for some reason you want to farm silk, Scarlet Monastery Armory or Cathedral is the place to go. If you can AoE, pull the whole place, have fun doing it, level your first aid, level your tailoring, vend your now useless 260 silk, whatever. Now that you have 225 First aid, you can start wondering where to farm mageweave.

I was farming silk for my glorious
Booty Bay
rep and I decided to keep track of which section of
Scarlet Monastery
was more beneficial. After a few runs, I decided that GY and Library were nearly worthless but the other two gave:
Armory
~44 Silk Cloth
~8
Wool Cloth
~16
Mageweave Cloth
~5 greens
~8gold & 50silver
Cathedral
~60 silk
~5 Wool Cloth
~10 Mageweave Cloth
~9 greens
~4gold & 85silver
So depending on the price of silk on your server, the extra ~4g per run could afford quite a few stacks of silk off of the AH with no downfall from your pre-farming gold stockpile. My server is unfortunately unbalanced and silk is around 4g per stack, so I stuck with Cathedral, as it was only 2 pulls for my Holy Priest.

Farming tip: If all you want is silk cloth, and don't want to keep stopping to dump the junk, fill all your bag slots with one piece of cloth. Bags will be full for everything but the cloth and cash.
To make room for an AH sale item, just combine two slots into one. Auto-loot and leave the junk behind. This is especially useful when almost full and you have to dump grays too often.

Started tailoring recently and I can honestly SM cath is the best place for it by a large margin. As an afflic 80 lock I run in pulling all the mobs with creature set to passive and only stop to AOE them once they keep dazing me. So head in, go up the left side past the 2 ponds, kill and loot everything when you get to the door. Then run in and immediately attack the boss which will pull every mob in cath to you, then aoe them down. If you don't want to bother with the mobs on the way to the door then don't and just keep draining the mobs in the cathedral and resetting the instance. "Quick" (relatively speaking of course) and easy cloth grinds.

Every other mob at least i got about 4 silk cloth. As many other comments above stated. If your farming for silk cloth, Head for Scarlet Monastery first.

If you're farming this with a high level AoE capable class, I highly recommend the SM Cath. Once you get to the actual Cathedral, you can run straight down the middle AoEing to kill those... then pull the boss and start spamming your AoE as all the rest of the mobs come to you. Very little time spent gathering the mobs up this way. I did it with my priest using Holy Nova spam to assist a friend who is leveling tailoring.

as a death knight with decent pre-icc level tanking gear ive found what i beleive to be the best way to farm this instance.
this requires a lot of passive defense from armor so im not sure clothies could do it.
1) walk to the door of the cathedral. dont waste time killing anything.
2)open door, run in and engage mograine and kill him.
3)kill whitemane. try to pull her as close to the cathedral doors as you can.
4)now all the mobs will beat on you... just take it = /. after she resses mograine run strait to the fountain and jump off. Mograine automatically aggros all the mobs in the instance as he runs after you.
5)go behind the corner of the hallway at the start of the instance to los all the mages. aoe, loot, reset.
all of cathedral in one pull.

I'd be interested to know what the most beneficial use of silk cloth is, post wrath.
After leveling a few alts I have a character's bank full of silk cloth. First thing that comes to mind is obviously tailoring, although I already have 2 characters with high level tailoring. I have been recently making cloth items through tailoring then disenchanting them, to be placed on the AH. This seems to be slightly more profitable, than putting the silk cloth stacks straight on the AH, as the market is almost always over saturated.
Does anyone have any nifty ideas on how to best use silk cloth?

On the mobs:
151 silk cloth (didn't bother with the whool)
21 Greens
Pick-up 31 "Grime-Encrusted Object" just for the heck of it and cleaned them in the The Sparklematic 5200!:
13 Small Lustrous Pearl (good for low level Jewelcrftng, blk smithing and some tailoring)
10 Iridescent Pearl (good for low level Jewelcrftng, blk smithing, leatherwork and some tailoring)
Ornate Bronze Lockbox:
1 green
1 blue
That's potencialy 300 cloths / hours.. With high level char on low level elite.. goes pretty fast.

After reading this thread, I decided to take my frost mage with an AoE Grinding spec (Deep frost, no frost bite, improved blizzard etc.) to SM to pick up some silk. Whilst doing it, i came up with a pretty good strategy to pull the entire cathedral and kill them very easily. The main problems i encountered were that using blizzard on the 80 or so mobs didn't actually kill them quick enough (thanks to the AoE damage cap), and of course, being beaten on when Whitemane puts you to sleep.
Just to note, at this point my mage was in mostly iLvl232 gear (from heroics).
The easiest method i found was runing through the instance, keeping wary of mob pulling ranges (not large if you're 80, you can effectively get right to the end without pulling if you're clever), and making sure i wasn't in combat upon engaing Mograine. At that point, I attempted to 1-or-2-shot Mograine as fast as possible (frostbolt/Icelance combo is usually enough at my gear level), with my back to the door behind him. By killing him fast enough, I was able to end that encounter before the mobs in the cathedral aggro'd on me. Then, i immediately entered the room behind me as the doors opened. High inquisitor whitemane doesn;t aggro until she reaches the corpse of mograine usually, so i was able to dodge in behind her whilst she and all the cathedral mobs gathered around mograines corpse, with no aggro on me. The mobs then ran back to thier starting positions, and i was able to quickly kill WHitemane, forcing her to sleep me without any other mobs aggroing on me.
As for the killing of the 80+ mobs, any experienced frost mage should find that easy. I ended up pulling them back to the 1st corridor of the instance, summoning my water elemental (on passive), using ice block to gather them all up in a bunch around me (easiest way without dying to paper cuts) and freezing them with my elemental's freeze whilst still ice blocked, before blinking away when iceblock expired. Form then, it's just a case of keeping ice barrier up, and blizzarding away, freezing them if they get near you with Frost Nova, blinking away and repeating. Mograine will be immune to the freeze, but if you've got Ice Barrier or Icy Veins up, he won't disturb your channeling, and he's easy enough to pick off afterwards.
You can do similar for the armory, although i took it in 2 parts, the training ground (gathering them in the center and AoEing them), and the Crusader's Armory, running through and pulling, then AoEing them in the long staright corridor just before Herod.

Thanks for the great post on how to do this. However, there are a few things that weren't clear to me at first. So, with your post as a starting point, here is my "refined" version, complete with a better explanation and pictures...Note that I am a prot pally and can take a beating...
1. Go into SM cathedral (as of patch 4.03 you don't need a key to get in)
2. Go down the first hallway to the end. Note: this is the point you will be returning to once you pull all the mobs.
http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/1206/image1a012.jpg
3. Make your way up to the cathedral door, avoiding mobs if you can, but killing a few if necessary.
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/2356/image2tz.jpg
http://img600.imageshack.us/img600/5379/image4h.jpg
4. Open the door and make your way up the middle of the carpet to where the boss Mograine is.
http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/2363/image5fc.jpg
5. Pull him back to the door you came in through
http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/8350/image6q.jpg
6. Kill him. Then the other boss, Whitemane, will come out from behind the altar and down to where you are.
http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/2941/image8ey.jpg
7.Attack her. Once her health gets down a bit, she will resurrect Mograine. You will be stunned and unable to attack at this point. If you are decently geared, you should be ok.
http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/2246/image10olx.jpg
8. As soon as you are released from the stun, turn tail and run. (Yes, I'm a poet and I know it)
http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/3088/image11x.jpg
9. You want to go back down to the corner I mentioned at the start of this guide. Run straight thru the fountain and jump off into the water pool below. The mobs won't jump after you but will instead use the stairs on either side. If you need a quick heal this is a good time to get one in. Run to the archway door and turn the corner.
http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/9283/image15j0.jpg
10. Get your back to the wall and get your AOE going, heal occasionally, etc..and you will eventually kill them all. Sometimes the mages run away and then attack from range, so I run back into the courtyard and line-of-sight them again to finish them off.
Good Luck!

With a high level character it seems that
the
best places for cloth are the instances near Undercity.
If you want to level tailoring or indeed first aid, park yourself in Undercity:
Start your stopwatch and make a game of beating your best time, makes doing repeat instances slightly more fun.
Shadowfang Keep for Wool Cloth (some Linen Cloth too, jump down the balcony outside to make exiting faster).
Scarlet Monastery Cathedral for Silk Cloth
Stratholme for Mageweave Cloth
Destroy greys and other stuff you don't want when you run inside and out the instances.
Head to Outlands for Hellfire Ramparts for Runecloth.

Most of the kills drop silk cloth and they respawn pretty quickly, so you can keep running from one end of the camp to the other and farming silk. These days it's not good for much more than leveling up on first aid and tailoring, but you do still need it to get to bigger and better things...

With Silk Cloth for more than 1g each on my realm currently, I decided to farm it instead.
I gave Blackhoof Village a try, which resulted in approximately one stack after 1 run through the village. Then I went to Scarlet Monastery - Cathedral, pulled the entire instance (following nyxathid's strategy), and looted approximately 3.5 stack.
Cathedral seems to be somewhat faster, and my preferance lies there, but Blackhoof Village is quite a decent farming spot as well, so follow your preferance.

Level 85 Farming Method:
Probably already mentioned but I will post it again.
One of the best methods to farm Silk Cloth post Cataclysm once you are level 85. Just solo run Cathederal part of SM - mainly run past all the mobs let them collect on you. Head straight to second boss (Mograine) and start attacking him all the mobs aggro then use AOE's until they are all dead collect all the Silk Cloth leave the instance then reset instances rinse and repeat.
- I get around 30 - 40 per run which takes tops 8 minutes at lvl 85
Cheers and Happy Farming!
Great for rebuilding Steamwheedle Cartel Rep. by doing the repeatable quest Traitor to the Bloodsail. For those of you who are insane enough to get the Insane in the Membrane FoS.

One of the main problems finding cloth these days is that as of Patch 4.1 a lot of the zones have had their levels re-aligned. Which means that all or most of the data on database sites (like this one) is of negligible use.
It also appears that they've nerfed the cloth drop rate overall outside of instances. Gone are the days we can farm areas where mobs drop 3-4 pieces of cloth. If they still exist, I haven't found the areas.
So I got on my mount and went touring around Eastern Kingdoms killing progressively higher and higher level humanoids until -- like I said -- I found the sweet spot. The spot where mobs consistently dropped more than one piece, but I didn't get a lot of mageweave or wool.
Eastern Plaguelands is for the most part too high. Hinterlands is too low (the troll ruins and Drywhisker Gorge
used
to be a gold mine of silk... not anymore!) The best place I've found to gather silk is around Andorhal in Western Plaguelands. You get "somewhat consistant" 2x drops there. And from what I've seen since 4.1 dropped -- that's the best you can expect. Unless you do what other folks have suggested and take a snow plow through SM.
Cheers!

With the shattering, all cloth drops were rebalanced. This means that cloth that used to be so plentiful, vendoring was a valid option (linen and silk for example) and once again valuable while cloth that came at a premium before (wool) are more reasonably priced. Silk will be used in large amounts by anybody level first aid and especially tailoring. With heirlooms and RAF benefits, most people doing either will find themselves using more cloth than they'll get, especially if they're leveling via BGs or dungeons. Anybody with a stockpile of any cloth they do not need are best suited auctioning them off a few stacks at a time so as to not flood the market.

With all four wings, cleared completely, and a few of the mobs just outside the instances, the totals were: 202 silk cloth, 26 wool cloth, 10 mageweave cloth, 22 BoE greens, 16 BoP blues, 2 recipes (both for tailoring, fortunately), and a 12-slot bag. I have no idea how long it took me, since I stopped in the middle to make dinner, but I would guess about 45-60 minutes.

If you are 85 or perhaps 80 I suggest grabbing everyone in the armory and killing them all as soon as you pull Herod. Scarlet Cathedral is definitely the best place to get a quick five runs in. You can simply go up one side killing everyone in the courtyard up to the cathedral door. Then just run inside the cathedral and hit the boss once; every single mob in the cathedral will run to him. One aoe and run finished. Then, on your way out, you can get the guards down the opposite side you came up.
Most adds drop 1-4 silk cloth and you get about 25 or more per run.

SILK CLOTH - the ultimate gathering location is in Western Plaguelands at Felstone Field, located in the Northwest section of the map. Stand between the barn door and the field to your right, your safe here keeping in mind the far and few between occasional NPC coming frome the field.Though not all will drop the cloth, most do.There is a NPC that walks from the buildings towards the field and disapears after a few seconds. I don't know for sure but killing it seemed to reset the drop rate of the silk cloth. The repop rate of the NPCs is 15 to 20 seconds and will drop 1-3 silk cloth. Target shooting does not draw the NPCs that are close by. In 30 minutes I gathered 27 silk cloth, a couple of Greater Healing Potions, and a Mageweave cloth.

1)go to Cathedral Scarlet Moonstery
2)go directly to the cathedral's big door
3)open it
4)go ahead and attack the boss that is right near the altar
5) all the mobs inside the cathedral will attack you
6) wait till they group up
7) AOE
8) loot and profit
9) reset instance, go to 1

Actually, the easiest method by far is to got to the Uldaman Mines. Outside, near the entrance to the mines, there are a number of Shadowforge Dwarves. Kill all of them, and don't get discouraged if the first few don't drop. On average, every 3-5 of them will drop anywhere from 2-5 Silk Cloth. After killing all of those Outside, head inside the mines and totally decimate everything in there, even the troggs. Don't go into the instances though, unless you really want to. After completely clearing the whole mine, head back outside. All of those miner's should have respawned by now. Kill all of them again. Using this method, I was easily able to farm about 4-5 stacks of 20 Silk Cloth using my Level 60 Priest (And he's a healer :P). Unfortunately, the respawn time seems to be rather long, so its easier to just heartstone to either Ironforge or Stormwind. Make your profit, then go back for another run :P I don't know about you guys, but on my server a stack of Silk Cloth runs around 35 gold in the AH, and 20 bolts of Silk run 120-140. Enjoy xD

I was having problems using SM to farm due to the fact that they like to interrupt casts. So I took my 85 warlock out to the edge of Feralas to farm Grimtotem Marauders. In exactly 30 minutes, I got 192 silk, 17 mageweave, 3 greens and a blue.
I don't know how fast SM is but 19 stacks an hour seems pretty good to me.
This spot is nice for several reasons.
They are clumped together
They are attacking allies, so they wont attack you
They respawn really fast
They rarely drop grey items, so your bags don't fill up
Just remember to put your pet on passive!

Risen spirit drop rates are not 75% currently. They're approximately around 25%. Still, with the short respawn rate and the sheer amount of them, duskwallow is an excellent place to farm silk cloth.

As a Lvl 85 Mage skilling
Tailoring
I went to SM Cathedral to give it a try but was utterly disappointed because of several reasons:
The droprate and quantity was crappy - At least to my standards.
The MOB's won't chase you forever - A new thing for me.
It takes forever to loot all the MOB's once they have all died - I guess I prefer a more stead kill and loot system.
Getting out of the Instance, resetting and getting back to the Bosses takes time too - Well... I guess I'm lazy as that.
So I've been taking Bergelmir's advice and took my chance on the
Grimtotem Breaker
,
Grimtotem Spirit-Shifter
and
Grimtotem Elder
at Blackhoof Village which was a blessing as they die by even just looking at them, respawn fast, drop Silk often and a lot ( sometimes 2x 2-3 pieces ).

As a LV60 Priest, I found the Scarlet Monastary almost impossible to solo, with the Cathedral mobs having the same amount of health as the ones I am fighting in Outlands. It took me about 45minutes to clear, thanks to all the Monks that interupt spellcasting. For everyone wishing to farm Silk, Uldaman isn't much better. The Dwarfs rarely drop silk, the Troggs however are great (this is just outside the instance). Their respawn rate is really low however.
I suggest waiting till you are at least LV70 so you can clear the instances in less then 15 minutes (assuming you have a good AOE). Tank classes can do this earlier. It will just save you so much time.

Uldaman is a great place to farm silk. You'll also get some mageweave as well. Even just outside the instance in the dig site you'll get about 70 silk. Easy kills for my 85 warrior. I don't think cloth wearers should have any problems taking out the troggs or dwarves either.

At my current level I was having a really hard time farming silk in Scarlet Monastary. When I ran through it using dungeon finder, other players were looting faster than I could. I then remembered a great place to do farming.. In the northern part of Dustwallow Marsh is a place called "Blackhoof Village." There are Grimtotem tauren guys there that have a very high drop rate on silk cloth. Not all of them drop silk, but I would say more than half do. When they do drop, it's usually in excess of 2 to 3. I would estimate that in 15 minutes (I didn't time it exactly) I had 4.5 stacks of cloth (or 90 cloth). The respawn rate of these Grimtoten tauren is very quick, so by the time you reach the edge of the settlement, you can go back to the entrance and clear it out again. In some cases, they were respawning so quickly that they were spawning on top of the previous spawn's corpse. Forget about Scarlet Monastary, this is the way to go! Some of these creatures even drop the odd piece of mageweave. Catch a teleport from a mage, or if you're a mage, teleport to Theramore Isle, then follow the path northwest until you start seeing totem poles. Happy farming.

I did all four wards of Scarlet Monastery with my 85 rogue and ended up with 244 Silk Cloth. Definitely a good place for farming, especially around bosses when they call in mobs with low HP and you can AoE them. As said previously, place 1 piece of Silk Cloth on each bag slot, so you don't have to stop and clear all the greys out of your bag all the time. Also, between each ward, clear the Grand Vestibule - all in all you'll get about 1½ stack extra this way.

Uldaman, Uldaman.. ULDAMAN! This is the absolutely BEST PLACE to farm Silk. I got 4.5 stacks alone from killing all of the humanoids outside of the instance, and another 7 stacks from within the Instance.. Try getting that much in 1 run of SM. (5/20/2012)
Edit: Another reason why Uldaman is so superior than SM, SM mobs reset on you.. Yes, even in the Dungeon. You can totally just facepull Uldaman, without ever worrying of any reset! Can't WAIT for AOE-looting! :]

This way is faster then killing all the mobs because they deagro if you run to far away.

I needed to do some silk farming to lvl up my tailoring and first aid. Looking here, there seemed to be a tossup between Feralas and SM Cath. I started out in Feralas because I was already pretty close to there. I am a Lvl 85 Destructo Lock and in 90 minutes, I managed to get 10 stacks of Silk and 2 of Mageweave. I spammed my Shadow Bolt, Chaos Bolt, and occasionally my Rain of Fire AoE or used my Wand.
I swear, it was like it was falling out the sky. The first 10 minutes, I swore that the rate had been nerfed because I wasn't getting anything other than silver, which isn't bad at all. Then, it started dropping like mad. The biggest bonus was that I didn't fill up my bags with grey trash.
I hung around for three hours last night.
My final haul was:
17 Stacks of Silk.
3 Stacks of Mageweave
2 Green Pattern drops
About 75s in misc. drops; a few greys, food, pots, and a few greens.
I haven't gone to SM Cath yet, but I don't see much of a reason to. The mobs around New Thalanaar respawn very quickly, they are in a constant fight with friendlies, so even those who are at lvl with them in good gear can use this spot as well, the drop rate is phenominal, and you don't fill up quickly on trash, so you aren't constantly leaving to get rid of stuff. Also, in my 3 hours there, I never saw another person there. Even if there was one, the respawn rate is so quick that it wouldn't matter.
Money wise, it wasn't too bad. On average, I think with each circuit (killing all mobs once), I averged between 20-40s, so I think I netted a few gold easily, but I wasn't keeping good track of what I was earning money wise.
Happy Farming.

I was leveling tailoring and ran into the usual problem of not enough silk cloth on the AH, so I set out to farm some.
Following advice in this thread, I initially tried Blackhoof Village in Dustwallow Marsh. Using an 81 mage, my drop rate worked out to about 10 stacks of silk cloth over 1 hour. I did have times when very few mobs were up so I lost some time looking for respawns.
Later I realized I needed still more cloth, so this time I tried Feralas near New Thalanaar. It proved much superior -- not only did the mobs respawn FAST but there are at least double the number of mobs, meaning I never ran out of targets. Additionally they seemed to drop more cloth... I had 5 stacks in <15 minutes. This spot was trivially easy. Would farm again++++.

I decided to try out
five
different places that were listed on here and other sites to farm silk. Here's what I personally got from each.
I soloed ALL of these on my level 62 Disc Priest with crappy gear, and had no issues anywhere.
In order of best to worst, they are:
Blackhoof Village, Dustwallow Marsh:
This spot is THE best. Blackhoof Village is
very
tiny -- takes maybe 30 seconds to walk through end to end, but the respawn rate on mobs is insanely fast (30-60 seconds usually, sometimes faster). For reference, one loop around the village took me about 3 minutes, killing and looting included. I constantly saw them spawning right in front of me, and sometimes my cooldowns couldn't even keep up. However, they're lowish level mobs (32 I think) and not very aggressive, so it's a really easy area to farm. I farmed here for about 2 hours and I got:
420 Silk Cloth
30 Mageweave Cloth
1 blue
9 greens
1 recipe
If you need Silk Cloth, this is the place to go. Even if you don't stay very long, you'll leave with a ton of mats. If you go here, you definitely won't need to go anywhere else for Silk Cloth, and you'll have plenty to put on the AH. Equip large bags before going though, or prepare to drop things while there. I'd advise you clean out your bags first and store anything you don't absolutely need in the bank if you're looking to farm a lot.
Uldaman, Badlands:
Second best that I've found. I spent about 10-15 minutes farming on my way in, and then about an hour inside. I hadn't done this one in forever, so I got a bit lost. If you know the instance, it'll probably be quicker. Some of the boss fights took awhile, but they're not hard. If you're higher level, you can probably run through and one-shot most things. The drop rates were very good here, in my opinion. An hour and 15 minutes gave me:
129 Silk Cloth
55 Mageweave Cloth
6 blues
1 greens
If you're looking to get a lot of silk and some mageweave, and are willing to spend some time, this is a good spot. Most mobs were dropping either Silk Cloth or Mageweave Cloth, and I got quite a few weapons and armor to DE along the way.
Scarlet Monastery, Tirisfal Glades:
I first ran through the Forlorn Cloister area of SM. It took me about 16 minutes total, from start to finish. After that, I headed to the Library Wing. For about 34 minutes worth of farming, my total was:
93 Silk Cloth
39 Wool
7 blues
2 greens
IMO, it's an okay drop rate. Just over half an hour will get you almost 5 stacks of Silk Cloth alone. Not the first place I'd go, but it's definitely not the worst. If you don't need a ton of Silk Cloth, this might be a good place; it's pretty quick to get through.
Gnomeregan, Dun Morogh:
I got about 20 minutes into this and then gave up. The drop rates were bad, at least in my experience. In 20 minutes of farming, I had:
19 Silk Cloth
1 Wool
1 blue
2 greens
Keep in mind, this is less than half of what I got in Scarlet Monastery in slightly more time. Not worth it, and I wouldn't recommend going there to farm Silk Cloth.
Gahrron's Withering, Western Plaguelands:
I found this place on a WoW leveling guide site. It said to farm the Haunting Visions and Wailing Deaths. For ~20 minutes worth of farming, I ended up with almost nothing. I got:
4 Silk Cloth
A few silver & copper
This is NOT a good place to go whatsoever. The drop rates are extremely low and there's not many mobs. Note that the same guide had the Cult-Sworn Pugilists and Cult-Sworn Warlocks as mobs to farm (they are north of Gahrron's Withering), but I didn't bother going after how dismal my results were in the first area. This may have been a good area previously, I don't know; if so, it got seriously nerfed.
For reference, these were done between 1:30pm and 8pm EST, on the US-Shadowmoon server (on an Alliance toon). Hope this helps those of you looking for good spots to farm! :)

An excellent place to consider for Silk Cloth is a small Bloodsail Buccaneer encampment in
荆棘谷海角
found at 48.5, 37
If you sided with Booty Bay the
血帆术士
s and
血帆酒鬼
s here will be attackable (they may be even if you sided with the Bloodsail, but I doubt it as this wasn't the case with any other NPC I've encountered). While only the Warlocks appear to drop the Silk both will grant you rep with Gadgetzan, Booty Bay, Ratchet and Everlook (and of course -25 with the Buccaneers.)
After each is killed another will almost immediately spawn either around the campfire area or down the path a bit causing it to be a very viable farming spot for both silk and rep. For best results and 85 should bring an AoE, Mammoth with vendors, and a Guild Standard to boost all rep gains in the area. Profit.
EDIT: For those with an addon such as TomTom consider using /way Cape of Stranglethorn 48.5, 37
Just copy/paste.

I took my Mage (who is also a tailor) to New Thalanaar in Feralas.
Within 30 min I had around 24 stacks of Silk Cloth & 4 stacks of Mageweave cloth.
There is zero downtime here as the mobs respawn at an incredibly fast rate & in clusters making for a fairly enjoyable farm.
There was simply too much downtime in Blackhoof Village to make it a viable farming spot for me & SM is just a little too far away from Alliance civilization/vendors to keep the trash emptied at a decent pace.
Wherever you end up getting your farm on, be sure to try this place.

Total from loot & selling vendor trash not listed above and BOP drops: 12g.

Den Whompers
are a very good source of
Silk Cloth
and

. I originally started farming this spot for transmog greens which sell for 100g each plus, but found these mobs drop tons of cloth as well. They're elite mobs with about 5.5k health. They respawn very fast and continuous farming is the norm. These ogres are located in
Thousand Needles
south/east corner inside a cave. The cave's name is The Admiral's Den with coordinates of 92,83. If you don't have coords and have a spare 3 minutes watch

I took the suggestion of previous posters and went to New Thalanaar, on the far Eastern side of Feralas. I really enjoyed farming here for two reasons. First, spawn rates and drop rates were fantastic, made about 200 silk in less than half an hour. Second, if your horde, its a freaking battle there! I was just fan of knives-ing alliance sentinels and tauren all over the place, it was just fun to watch and run around in because it didnt feel like a grind, which is always a plus.

For anyone wondering what the drop rate is in the new SM revamped dungeons, I just received 64 silk cloth from Scarlet Monastery side, and Scarlet halls gave 35. Each run was short, but due to the substantial reduction in humanoid mobs to kill, I don't feel as though SM is a good place to farm anymore.

Tried out the new thelanaar place today at feralas. Killed out 15 humanoids and nothing, zilch, squat....Not a single silk drop!. So I left. The search continues for a descent silk farming place. Trying to level up tailoring, first time playing so i don't have an abundance of gold to buy all the silk I need. Getting tedious trying to find places to farm 600-700 articles of silk! An outrageous amount if you ask me, especially considering sometimes u have to kill btw 5-10 humanoids before to get a drop. At my level of 37, leveling tailoring is becoming a daunting task without good farming places with freq drops.

I thought I would check out some of the spots listed below and see what result I got as my lvl85 Horde Feral Druid...
I was able to do a SM cath side run, in and out in apprx 5min, for a total of 60~ silk each run. Don't bother killing the end boss, they don't drop any cloth and no longer group the room (and the sleep is just plain annoying). This was the best place to farm that I found.
The Mobs in Feralas, New Thelanaar, offered 60~ cloth for my 5min spent there. Be aware that only the Grimtotem mobs are lootable, so dont go out of your way to kill the Sentinals. Also the cloth drop rate is very hit and miss, I found a vast majority early on, then it seemed to slow down. This is probably the best place once instance capped.
The Den Whompers from Thousand of Needles, offered a total 15 silk and 15 mageweave over the same 5min time frame. Mobs were too spread. Don't waste your time.
RFK was good, netting apprx 70~ cloth, however a very long and tedious dungeons overall time per dungeon was closer to the 10min mark, not so good.
Outside Uldaman the respawn rate is awful, I was unable to successfully farm outside the instance for more than a minute. Dont go here!

Went back today and now the respawn rate does not seem to tick like it did. Maybe has something to do with CRZ ?

If you need silk i would say this is the place to go the respawn rate on mobs is insanely fast (20-40 seconds usually, sometimes faster). the next time i whent i got 109 silk cloth and 8 mageweave cloth in 10 mins. i had to go back because the first time was not bringing me up to mageweave on my tailoring, this place is not 50 stacks a hour as i read in another post about New Thalanaar , but if you did take a hour to farm this spot you would come out with around 30 stacks a hour. Happy Farming Guys.

Based on Narshe's comment I gave SM a miss and went to Gnomeregan. If you're Alliance, it has certain advantages, namely a mailbox and a vendor inside the instance so you never have to leave. Regardless of faction, the NPCs respawn with some regularity, and the grime-encrusted objects can be cleaned and opened while you wait. It's nothing like a cleaning of SM before the change, and it did take some time, but I got decent gold, useful mats, and the silk I was after.

Well, I decided to go ahead and bring up a tailor, so that meant searching out the metric ton of silk I'd need.
I started trying out some of the places listed here, but frankly they weren't doing well enough for me. The popular spots of New Thalanaar and Blackhoof Village seemed promising at first, but the respawn rate just couldn't keep up with me at 90. If I'm waiting on respawns, I'm not getting cloth, and if I'm not getting cloth, I'm wasting time.
Instead, I took a trip to Eastern Plaguelands and started laying waste to
Death's Step Miscreants
and
Death's Step Putrifiers
. The drop rate may not be the greatest {or maybe it is ;) } but there was always at least 1 or more packs respawning no matter how fast I was taking them out.
30 minutes of constant killing netted me
240 Silk
, 1 blue, a slew of greens and the occasional piece of mageweave. Whoohoo!

I've made a short macro for faster grinding of the
Death Step's Putrifier

/target Death's Step Putrifier
/cast Scorch
Simple insert the name of any spell that is castable while moving instead of Scorch. Then just run around in circles spamming this macro. The
Death Step's Miscreation
s will evade and new
Death Step's Putrifier
will spawn immediately.
Happy grinding :)

New Thalanaar is the place you want to be. Go after the
Grimtotem Marauder
. They are battling the Night elf NPC, and most cases instant re spawn. Virtually NO downtime for a lvl 85 mage. Just make the loop and you will not run out of mobs to kill. I average >600 cloth an hour, I also got a
Sprite Darter Egg
( an awesome bonus ) in the 30 min or so i was there.

I made a warlock with tailoring profession, did a lot of forum searching, found a legit place that will give you silk 1 or 2 stack 99% of the time. Also every 3-4 I killed would also drop mageweave cloth.
Dustwallow Marsh>Blackhoof Village. All Tauren there are around 31-34. So you can go there in early levels. They are easy kills and fast respawn rate. By the time you get from one end of the village to the other, the front part of the village is already respawning, so you can literally just cruise around in circles and not stop. I suggest go in with a high level character that you only need to 1-3 hit and kill them so it won't take as long. Then just send it via mailbox to the lower level character (that is, if your character in need is low level). ^_~

I can definitely confirm that Death's Step in the Eastern Plaugelands is a great place to farm silk cloth. It helps that the mobs are in groups of three. In each group there are two
死亡小径腐化者
s (casters) and one Death's Step Miscreation
死亡小径畸形怪
.
I have gotten a decent amount of silk cloth by farming here. There is almost zero down time. Once it seems that I have cleared the area the mobs have already started respawning. And yes, the group of two Death's Step Putrifiers and the one Death Step's Miscreation do spawn together and at the same time.
Location and number of 2 Putrifiers & 1 Miscreation (from now on I'll refer to them as 2P1M) groups:
Death's Step can be found to the southwest of Marris' Stead. The main entrance is marked by wooden spikes in the ground. Each set of spikes has two torches behind them. In the main Death's Step area is there is a tree, a tree trunk, a mushroom type thing, and a plant type thing in the rough center of a relatively flat area.
There are 9 (nine) of those 2P1M groups in this relatively flat area and on the low hills which rise up to the south. There are 3 (three) more of these 2P1M groups to the southwest of the relatively flat area with that tree, tree trunk, mushroom type thing, and plant type thing in the center. These other 3 2P1M groups can be found amongst the hills, to the southwest of the main flat area, amongst the hills which slope down and away to the southwest of the main flat area (with the tree, rock, and mushroom thing in the center.)

Just tried out the Blackhoof Village place in Dustwallow Marsh. Probably the best farming spot for Silk Cloth imo. I dont know if its just about being lucky but I got 120 silk cloth and 10 mageweave in about 15-20 minutes. Obviously, its sick! I didnt bother to gather the mobs and aoe them down. As a lvl 90 holy priest I just one shotted single mobs with Shadow Word: Death. Its not worth trying to aoe them down, you wanna get them down as quickly as possible, in my case taking them down with ranged attacks. Quicker kills means faster respawn, the mobs just kept spawning over and over again. Some didnt drop a single cloth while others dropped 3-5 cloth each.

I can also confirm that in patch 5.1 Death's Step in the Eastern Plaugelands (18, 77) seems to be the fastest place to farm silk cloth. On my level 90 Mage I farmed all 780 silk cloth needed for tailoring in less that an hour. The mobs there respawn almost instantly and even when other people came by to quest / farm there was never a shortage of mobs to kill.
If my comment has been helpful in any way, please remember to upvote so others can see, if my comment is useless and irrelevant, go ahead and down rate it too!

now.
Protip: Don't kill the
死亡小径畸形怪

Good place for Silk and Mageweave is Lost Rigger Cove in Tanaris. It is located right next to Caverns of time and the pirates there give you Booty Bay, Gadgetzan, and Tanaris rep too. But they also respawn extremely fast. If you can get a level 90 with AOE, just circle the cove, head to pirate ships, and by the time you're done with the ship, the cove is full of pirates again. They tend to drop more Mageweave than silk but they do drop silk.

I dont know about some people! But i know for sure when i go farming for something i want what im farming for. Some people may find it ok to farm for 2 hours and get a few cloth like say 420 Silk Cloth. I have been to the Blackhoof Village in Dustwallow Marsh and it was ok! But the mobs are way to spread for my taste. So i started to look around and found that WestReach Summit is the place for me. i got 300 silk cloth and 13 Mageweave Cloth in 30 minutes. The mobs are so close to one another.(By close i mean 4-5 in each mob) that all i did was run around on my druid 90 hitting swipe. Now if i did spend 2 hours there, ( I would never do that ) i would have got around 1200 silk cloth. Respawn rate on mobs is insanely fast, There was always some to kill. No wait time at all. WestReach Summit, Is at the top left of the map Thousand Needles in Kalimdor. The place is Vary Vary small. You will not find a better place! I have looked as of patch 5.3.0 Happy farming.

For an area to farm this cloth in relative peace, go to Eastern Feralas for Alliance (The New Thalanaar area), or NW Thousand Needles for Horde (Westreach Summit). The reason being if you flipped these, you get marked for PvP. I took my lvl 90 mage to both areas, and found them to be equally nice for silk cloth.

I've tried West Reach Summit over the last few days and find that the drop rate isn't nearly as good as claimed by others here. Not sure what to suggest at this point.
New Thalanaar for Alliance, on the other hand, is still very good for silk.

Just ran through the instance twice (7-27-13) with my 84 hunter as well as hitting the awfully slow re-spawning shadowforge mobs outside the instance entrance and came out with 240 cloth for about an hour's work, about 10 gold worth of grey junk, and about 100-125 gold worth of stuff to sell on the AH (leather, ore, gear). Of course for the latter you have to have skinning and mining.
Just seems like it wasn't so bad of a silk run. You also don't have to compete with low level questers in places like blackrock village. Maybe I like this way because I'm anti social. :D

Just under an hour at Westreach on a 90 tailor. Got 353 silk cloth, almost two stacks of mageweave. You shouldn't just sit up by the flight master, there are a ton of mobs across the bridge and down to the shore, with almost instant respawn.

If you want %^&*loads of Silk Cloth, Scarlet Monastery is the place to go.
Just went 2 runs and came back out with 12 full stacks (20 per stack).
And it just took about 20min.

South Barrens @ 48, 88. Bael Modan Excavation has tightly packed, fast spawning groups who drop lots of cloth. 4 stacks of cloth in about 15 mins.
This spot was much better than Blackhoof Village where I was competing for mobs with 2 other farmers.

Few stacks of these are listed on Drak'thul's auction house for 20k(20,000) gold. What the holy molly happened to this cloth, is it getting deleted or what?

Here's my method. Enter the left side of SM. Mount up and hit the first boss without looting him and without killing anything in the first section. Now, mount up again and go to the first hallway. You will be dismounted. Clear this hallway out and then mount up again. Aggro everything in this area up to the 2nd closed door, including the 2nd boss. Use the stairs for line-of-sight so you can one shot everything in one go. Then, head for the last boss, but just clear the left and right sides: don't kill the last the boss or you will have to endure the dumb role playing bit. Mount up again, head for the entrance. The Tundra mount vendor will work at the first part of the instance, but will not work in the later part of the instance. 2 stacks for 4 minutes of work. That includes from the start of the instance and getting back to the entrance. I did have cloth scavenging on my mage when I did this. You will hit the instance limit after about 10 runs (
right-click your portrait outside the instance and pick "Reset all instances" to get a fresh instance
), and you'll get about 20 stacks for 40 minutes of easy work.
Update (11/2/14): Editted from 5 instance runs to 10 instance runs per hour since Blizzard increased it.

Uldaman is good, but even better is just outside the instance. I did both and got about 110 cloth, just enough to raise my first aid to Mageweave.

Be cautious since this is just temporary.
Go to Duskwallow Marsh, north of Theramore Isle.
There you will find Crown Hoodlum, available Love's in the Air event.
Unlimited spawn, level range 33-34. Plenty of cloth in the loots.
Haven't calculated exactly but considering the crazy spawn you can roughly kill 1 Hoodlum/sec(Due to GCD ^^) since they spawn new ones when other dies.
Go there will you still can!
P.S.
I'd suggest that you pay a visit to these while leveling a new toon, low hp+easy to kill+good exp=Win.

Ally side: Best place I have found is in Feralas. Go to New Thalanar and kill the Grimtotem Marauders. They spawn as fast as you can kill them and they drop a lot of silk cloth very frequently. They also drop some mageweave cloth. They drop rate for Silkcloth is crazy. Happy farming.
Not sure about horde side but try it anyways.

I can vouch for Death's Step. Great place for farming silk cloth. I'm on a pvp server so a rogue tried to gank me a couple times but I'm a fire mage so I blew him up. But overall this is a great place for farming

Easiest way to farm
丝绸
would be in Scarlet Monastery. I'm not quite sure how many I get /run but as a brm monk (level 90), I started with
丝绸
x0, after 3 runs I got 331 of them. 331/3=110~. With that said, I get around 110 silk cloths / 5mins. Brewmaster monk,
, get everything in the instance except the bosses whom you oneshot, stand in last boss circle room, wait for all adds and pop
碧玉疾风
, Overall, this takes me 5-10mins to clear and get out. Consider going to SM first and see how it goes for you.
Good luck with your farming!
EDIT: It took me 3m 21s to clear the whole SMC and run back to the entrance, gaining me a total of 56
丝绸
, 20
毛料
and roughly 60g. This is in my opinion the most efficient way to farm Silk cloth (Unless you're posting what you make in a run here).

As horde if you want to farm Grimtotems in Ferlas, just AoE. As long as you don't use direct damage attacks you won't hit alliance npcs/get flagged for pvp.

A good place I found to farm
丝绸
is the area in Feralas called New Thranaar. There are
恐怖图腾掠夺者
and
菲拉斯哨兵
fighting. Great place quick respawns and plenty of them pretty close together. However this is super easy for Alliance but can be tricky for Horde as the Sentinels are hostile, so as long as you have a horde toon of a higher lvl you;re good to go :-) This area is a quiet spot to farm, I tried other popular areas and found there was to much competition. So to those who dont want to share their cloth with others I cannot recommend this spot enough.

My findings as a level 90 WW Monk ilvl 562 with tailoring:
Scarlet Monastery: 3 Min. Clear, 62 Silk Cloth, 5 Greens, 4 Blues, annoying pulls.
Scarlet Halls: 4 Min Clear, 25 Silk Cloth, 10 Greens, 4 Blues, good pulls.
Neither a significant source of wool or mageweave.

Can confirm: Death's steps in EPL is the way to go if you want lots of silk cloth quickly. Was just there with 2 other guy and got 140 silk cloth in 20 minutes.

Using multiple toons parked outside SM, or left inside near end boss at the end of your run, you can get quite close to 1,000 silk per hour in
scarlet monastery
.
I can't remember when I felt like the style of farming used going from small pack to small pack at the Eastern Plaguelands farm spot, nor ever getting there and not having competition for tagging mobs.
Logging between the toons will save you some travel time, never having to run back to the start. I also preferred to have different DPS styles to use in the runs since i was going for 1,400 cloth.

New Thalanaar in east
菲拉斯
is still a viable place to get Silk Cloth in 6.0.3.
As a level 77 Warlock, I spent half an hour there and got a stack (200) plus 18 extras. Got a bit of Mageweave as well, though not enough to actually go there to farm it.
There's no downtime, as they respawn too quickly for you to run out. Great place for mid-level Alliance characters who may be too low level to solo some of the other places.

Just ran SM with a druid. Got 66 silk cloth. Not too bad and only took a few minutes. The only slow-down is the casters but easily LoSed from AoE.

A lot of people seem to like to recommend the Scarlet Monastery, but honestly I think it's a waste of time. One run (so doing both parts of SM), yielding about 85 silk. Only 85! And once you get into the dungeon, you have to walk your happy butt back out, so it's a waste of time. Finally I tried out New Thalannar, and I got ~600 silk in 30 minutes.

As of 5/2015 all of this By Phoenixbowman is true :)
(175 – 2) on 2013/01/12 (Patch 5.1.0)
I can definitely confirm that Death's Step in the Eastern Plaugelands is a great place to farm silk cloth. It helps that the mobs are in groups of three. In each group there are two Death's Step Putrifiers (casters) and one Death's Step Miscreation Death's Step Miscreation.

A good place to farm this is in Thousand Needles. Either around the speed barge or the Southsea Holdfast.
Found quite a bit of it here.

I like Uldaman for farming silk.
I was playing a level 60 warlock, inside the instance and I would run through all the Trogs until I get to the map room (where Ironaya will come out) and then AOE all the trogs at once - loot - run out & reset dungeon - rinse and repeat. I only got about 40-50 silk per run but the runs only took maybe 5 minutes.

If you're like me, you're a busy WoW player. A level cap toon or two with plenty of chores you're procrastinating on and you don't want to waste your valuable crafting resources boosting that neglected alt's trade skills when there's all those perfectly usable vanilla mats still around.
I was totally spoiled with how easy linen and wool were to farm thanks to the sweet Wetlands farming spot east of Greenwarden's Grove. I wanted more of that instant gratification! So I drove my shiny new level 63 alt out to New Thalnaar for Silk farming and wasn't disappointed. Immediate respawn and tight mob density makes this place absolutely unparalleled. A lap around the area took 3-4 minutes and nearly always ended up with 30+ cloth per lap, meaning averaging something near 10 silk cloth per minute. There's also a decent drop rate for Mageweave and while you're farming in Feralas you have a chance at the coveted
精龙的蛋
zone drop.
You'll knock out your silk needs in no time, put a nice dent in your next tier cloth farm, and the chance at a expensive battle pet. In conclusion, easily comparable to Wetlands in terms of efficiency. Can't recommend it enough.

As of 7.0.3, the Death's Step trios in Eastern Plaguelands still rock. In about an hour, I got 600 silk cloth, 45 mageweave, assorted greens that I disenchanted, and three
Mr Grubbs
battle pets thanks to
Fiona's lucky charm
. This hour included breaks to let lower level people do the quest in the area.
The mobs are arranged in groups of threes. There's a dozen spots where the groups can form, and there's always three groups up, which meant instant respawn and zero wait time. There is a handy picture
here
(I did not create it, just linking).
I did this as a level 100 rogue who is a tailor with cloth scavenging.

As of patch 7.3.5, I'm just not seeing the same drop rate of Silk Cloth from "Death's Step trios" in EPL. In 30 minutes I got 40 silk cloth and 50 mageweave cloth. (more mageweave than silk).

The easiest place I've found post 7.3.5 to farm silk cloth is the undead mobs in Andorhal, Western Plaguelands.
Eastern Plaguelands was only dropping mageweave for my 110.
Good luck!

Was after some silk for my alt so I took my lvl 110 Pala (not got cloth drops bonus) into Scarlet Monastery.
Chapel Gardens
After 3 runs - 135 silk, 4 mageweave, 1 wool and 3 tailoring pattern's.
Scarlet Halls
After 3 runs - 82 silk and 36 wool
I like the Chapel Gardens side as it only took me 5mins or less per run and you can pull all the mobs in one run or break it down to two pulls.

has been great as of patch 8.0. The only downside is the cool off after resetting instances so quickly. Death's Step is "ok" but respawn rate is slow. Same goes for New Thalanaar.

I don't know what happened between MoP and now, but the best place I've found so far is still Scarlet Monastery. 4 stacks in about 15 mins at level 40. The Grimtotem location doesn't have enough mob density or a high enough drop rate to compare. Haven't tried uldaman or any other instance yet, full disclosure. Scarlet Halls is a bust though, don't bother.

These are the findings I got from running Scarlet Monastery and one run of Scarlet Halls. Scarlet Monastery is the superior instance of the two.
Each run took 7 minutes. I experimented with different ways of pulling. The most convenient way seemed to be to run up one side of the graveyard, kill boss, run up one side of cathedral courtyard, kill boss, up one side cathedral, kite boss down the other side of cathedral, stop just before door (don't leave cathedral or boss will despawn). Kill. Go out other side of cathedral and graveyard gathering other side as you go.
Silk Mageweave Wool Gold Rich Illusion Dust Lg. Brilliant Shard

78 0 02 93.42 12 17
49 2 09 92.65 11 18
54 0 13 99.52 10 9
The first line is the run from Scarlet Halls.
You can obviously speed this up by not running all the way out to the outside entrance each time. I didn't count the time it took to sell and disenchant everything. Also, there is more enchanting materials I garnered, but any appearance I couldn't learn on my mage I sent off to another character and didn't disenchant. Also, there were a few recipes and gems which I didn't sell.
