Where does it come from and how hard is it to get?
Soul-Trader Beacon comes from the World of Warcraft TCG (trading card game)
TCG Expansion:
Hunt for Illidan (
Press Release
)
Card:
Ethereal Plunderer
Rarity:
1/363 booster packs (speculative)
Distribution:
Booster boxes contain 24 boosters and cost approx $65 USD (inc. shipping), therefore the average cost of obtaining this particular loot is $983.00
How much would I expect to pay for one off eBay or similar?
According to
http://www.wowtcgloot.com/soultrader_beacon.htm
(most information sourced from there), the expansion won't be released until the 1st of July 2008. Upperdeck Entertainment the makers of the TCG have specified that all three loot cards (The Footpath of Illidan, Disco Inferno!, Ethereal Plunderer) are as common as those in the last set, so apart from the initial rush during release the price should for this item should average around less than $280USD.
Facts:
Summons a full-size Consortium member as a Non-Combat pet.
When summoned emotes "I have arrived. Shall we set to work, then?".
Pet follows and absorbs souls from slain mobs via killing blow in return for
Ethereal Credit
.
To earn credit mobs / players must be capable of giving experience / honor, i.e. green or harder, and character must have the killing blow.
The pet also acts as a vendor and the following items can be bought with
Ethereal Credit
:
The vendor purchasable Soul-Trader clothing set almost matches those worn by Consortium members.
Useable at any level and therefore available for twinks.
How do the Loot cards work?
Loot cards are special rare versions of WoW TCG cards found in booster packs, starter decks, and raid decks that have a revealable unique code. Once this protective layer concealing the code is scratched away, a 25 digit promotion code is revealed that can be entered into the Blizzard offical promotions page. These codes work for both US and EU servers.
I have the 25 digit loot code, now what?
All accounts from every region in the world use
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/misc/promotion.html
to redeem any and all special loot. This webpage allows you to enter the 25 digit promotion code and also select the region and realm for the character that will receive the loot item.
Upon succcessfuly submitting the above information, you will be presented with an in-game code. Write this code down or print it out; you will need it to retrieve your item. Log into the game with the character that is to receive the item and travel to Booty Bay in Stranglethorn Vale. There, you will need to find a goblin by the name of Landro Longshot. He is located on the lower parts of Booty Bay on the docks, and should be easily recognised due to the fact that he has a distinctive purple shirt and two body guards next to him.
When you find Landro, he will first ask if you are here for a promotion, and then ask you which TCG expansion your item comes from (or Points Redemption); check your loot card if you are not sure which item that is. Ensure you have got bag space to hold the item!

Just trying this chap out on the test server and I've had an idea. I ran (read: corpse hopped) a fresh toon from Northshire to Booty Bay and aquired the companion. I then hearthed back to Northshire and ran up through stowmwind to the deeprun tram. Down the Ironforge end I was able to collect a couple of hundred credits in just a few minutes killing the lvl 1 deeprun rats (as they're less than 9 lvls lower than me and respawn faster than you can kill them!) Now I know most of the items are BoP but a couple, namely the booze and the throwable essense sphere aren't and therefore could be traded (or sold?) to another character. The booze has what seems to be a 50% chance to turn you into an ugly mutant thingy for about 10 seconds and the sphere is pretty cool as it flies quite slowly towards your target and can easily be run away from. I'd love to see 20 people simultaneously throw a spere at one character as he/she runs around Ironforge avoiding them! Hehe. Anyways if anyone wants to use/waste their loot code on a lvl 1 character and farm rats, go for it... Just some food for thought! Enjoy!

I know you can buy nifty things from him,
but can you sell to him
?
If so, then that'd make him so much more worthwhile to keep around if you're farming for something and run out of bag space.
Still, he wouldn't be able to
repair
.
This is just an idea I think would be cool, but I have not seen this item in game yet and do not know if you can even sell. If anyone could tell me, I'd appreciate it quite a bit. :) Thank you!

it would be pointless to sell any of the none bop items because of the fact that it is a conjured items and will disappear after 15 minutes of being logged out. thats just like telling a mage that he or she should go and sell water or food all day when it only takes mana to get the item. i personally would just find a guild member that has it on a raid and just ask for some of the liqueur when waiting for buffs or after a wipe.
it would be interesting however to see how long you could keep one from disappearing from constantly passing the item from guild member to guild member. obviously keeping it from the hands of people that would rather keep it for the look what i got factor.

This ludicrously overpriced, overly-rare non-combat pet yeilds Ethereal Credits when you kill an enemy. These credits can be used to purchase items from the pet itself. Would love to have this pet but... Idioticly overpriced... It's sad what people will pay for a piece of cardboard...

A couple things I've found out from getting this pet that may be useful to know if you plan on getting it, or already have it.
I took the beacon to raids, thinking that Hyjal trash would give me plenty of ethereal credits in no time. To my dismay, I found that I only received ethereal credit when I had the killing blow.
However, I found a spot I particularly enjoy farming the credits now. The mana wyrms at sunfury hold respawn almost instantaneously, and give ethereal credits. I am a hunter, I found sniping the kills from the sunfury archers was easy, but I killed them anyway so that I could have a little bit more time to kill every spawn.
I will keep trying to find other locations like this that will have a high yield for credits.

They aren't paying for the piece of cardboard they are paying for the pixelated digital reward, much like you pay every month for your characters etc., the rarity and wow effect is just worth more to them.

In order to get a Credit you
MUST land the killing blow
on the monster if you are not soloing. Failure to do so will result in nothing. Except, maybe experience or loot from the monster.

CANNOT
sell to this merchant.
Best place I've found to farm these
Credits
for this guy is in the mines of

Around
80
mobs per mine
But if you kill the mobs to fast you dont always get a credit for each, when I've killed the 5 mob pats the trader has only given me 4 credits. It seems to happen when a mob dies when the trader is stealing the essence from the previous mob.

Two additional things to note:
1) The
Ethereal Essence Sphere
he sells is similar to the
Heavy Leather Ball
,
Voodoo Skull
and other thrown items. However, if you outpace the very slow animation, you can have dozens of the glowy spheres trailing you with some help from friends. Doing this in AV is quite the show.
2)
The Soul-Trader is a fully browsable vendor for
both factions
. This is the first pet to allow this and it can be used in PVP to confuse/distract opponents. In fact, he's the perfect bait in World PVP as people think he's a regular vendor as they stop to shop.
Here's a video of the Soul-Trader on my rogue confusing enemies in AV. As a rogue, it really makes him appear to be a legit vendor as I'm hidden in stealth. It also shows off the soul-stealing animation and other effects. I also applied a Papa Hummel biscuit to make him huge and easy to see. Hope you enjoy it.

One useful thing that may not have been mentioned. Is while yea can't sell things to him, it does show the vendorable value of the items in your bags. Which comes in handy when deciding what to throw out and what to keep. He does make audible noise, which sounds like wind blowing over a field. It's very relaxing compared to disgusting oozling and flapping birds.

Daladain, you are incorrect on one front. This item is NOT a full-sized ethereal pet. I know the UD website did say that at the time, however after purchasing this item I found that it is about a gnome-and-a-half tall, while consortuim NPCs are easily taller than any gender of any alliance race.
This item has several other issues that make it not worth persuing as things stand: the items you can buy from it (some of them) are merely conjured, so you cannot buy a nice Ethereal Sphere and have fun playing ball. Instead because the balls are so rare people refuse to throw them around, making it pointless to buy them.
The clothing you can buy does resemble the pets clothing but without the cool glow effect the pet has it just looks like nooby rags.
Since everyone can interact with it sometimes the pet stands in the way of loot (in a party) so often that I am asked to put it away.
So, in short, it's short and it's vend items are not any good. Very disappointing. I am currently persuing resolution from UD and/or Blizzard. If anyone would like to see this item I have it on Cassy on Feathermoon.

Is this item classified offically as a non-combat pet by WoW? And is the icon correct up top that shows it only has 100 charges?

The pet lasts forever and does not have charges, as you might be led to believe by the icon above.

Only the owner get Ethereal Credit from killing mobs? Or ppl gruped with the owner can get credits as well from their kills while the pet is active, so they can use them to buy things from him?

I have to agree with what has been said here, I got it based on the same principle to sell stuff to it whilst grinding away. Obviously this is not possible and no one in ur party gets any credits so no one else can buy the stuff but you. Yes you can trade the items but no fun, shame as other people could get the clothers. This is just as useless as the Turtle mount, only a vanity item. Blizzard should change both this guy and the Turtle mount.

A good way to farm these credits, and get experience and loot, is to do groups for the Culling of Stratholme. The Zombies DO give ethereal credits, and are very easy to one shot.
Why is this downrated? The information is true and helpful to people trying to get the full set without much effort.

Actually the best place to farm credits is at
quest place. You should be able to summon him and just run through footmans.

EDIT: This post was made in Wrath when mobs of this level were relevant.
To be honest, I feel the best place to farm Credits would be doing the daily involving mass-killing the Frenzyheart. A good one is Power of the Great Ones. This is the quest where you go to the Lifeblood Pillar to power up the crystal orb, and then use it for a ten minute buff that heals you for every damage you do. Apparently some AoE's don't pair well with it, but it's an awesome buff.
There is a slight problem, I don't suggest mobbing up, your Soul-Trader can only retrieve so many souls at once. For example, for every five mobs you'll get about four credits, depending on how close you kill them together. The more mobs you pull at once, the less credits you'll probably get because several will probably die at the same time. Pace yourself, do some looting, it helps, while you don't get any cloth they don't drop anything besides standard regening items and potions/scrolls, so it's not like you'll run out of bagspace anytime soon. Extra gold is always nice, and it'll make the bodies despawn faster so you're not ankle-deep in death (though some of you might be into that). If you need a break, don't worry, while you can't loot anything your pet kills, the trader can still take its soul (which can lead to moderate fun with an Inferno). So for Hunters, this is pretty awesome due to how strong their pets can be.
If you'd rather be possessed by Soo-holu in Will of the Titans, remember to summon the trader BEFORE transforming, otherwise you'll have to "dismount", find a new crystal, summon, and transform. Mastery of the Crystals is also nice, although it limits you a little as far as mobility, HOWEVER! If you pick a nice little area with a steady respawn rate, the trader can keep up with getting souls at the Crystal of Unstable Energy's kill rate. You basically just sit there and keep summoning the crystal. I highly suggest only using Unstable Energy and Frozen Grip for Crowd Control. Violent Storm may kill them too quickly for your trader to keep up. You can't loot anything the crystals kill. This is my favourite way to farm, I generally get more than 500 credits per hour doing this.
Another fun thing, is that Jaloot gives you a handy speed buff, should you ever need it, and a pet to take some aggro off you if you don't want to pay much attention. So, feel free to have him or your favourite little digger handy. Whatever they kill, while you can't loot it, the trader can still suck out its soul.
EDIT: This really shouldn't be downrated, it is fairly helpful for fast farming on credits.

i just got mine yesterday, and i noticed some things of interest...
his soul capture spell needs no los, it will go through walls and buildings. and if he cant see it at all he will move to correct this then capture the soul.
your pets can kill enemies without you lifting a finger and he will still capture the soul (your pet can get the last blow in raids and you will still get the credits)
i know this has been mentioned somewhere but in my opinion, best place to farm is CoS, zombies respawn fast and plentiful and are one shot kills.
also, his range of soul capture is nothing to worry about if you and your pet are killing two different things.
he throws the credits at you, if you move on a mount they will probably not catch you, hard to tell since you only get them after killing things.
and lastly, he is awsome!

This is the very best non-combat pet EVER. And I say it as a collector, who owns 95 pets so far. If I would be forced to choose between keeping either him, or all my other pets, I wouldnt have to think about it for even a split second.
So much fun as I had with him confusing friends in raids, or (even better) horde players in Battlegrounds, when they saw him taking the soul from the killed ones. I have target's target feature turned on, and so often I saw a confused or curious Hordie targetting the Soul-trader while I had the chance to kill them.
Simply, he is my most beloved pet, and Im very fond of him.

Just got this bad boy and he is so utterly awesome...i cant kill stuff now without him and when i raid he makes me strive for that killing blow just to see his soul sucking. Hell, i cant stop running circles in sw just to see him run after me for that matter. As 85DK ive added alittle more evilness to my unholy rotation by farming souls in Icecrown from the groups of Converted Hero's i believe they are called, from the Touney dailies...These things are very entertaining to kill since i do it on the run the trader falls behind and it gives the death grip look of his soul sucking a huge arc over and over and lemme tell ya seeing 9-10 50yd arcs fire off one after another is pretty sick lookin and dont get old (the area also affects the color of the soul sucking at times, makes it green vs purple)...i can see the ethereal credits fly from my trader to me after he sucks them dry easier to see this when he not right on top of ya. You want to kill mobs in succession so he gets to drain them all, if they die too soon after another that is a soul you'll miss..Lastly i would have to say what makes this the "BiS" of the compainions would have to be that it is interactive w/ you in a way none other is...totally worth getting if your on the fence about it.

I now have the Soul-Trader on two of my toons, and use them quite a bit in battlegrounds.
The
强者的旗帜
is fun and useful -- and I have it on two of the toons I PvP with -- but there is just something very cool about having your companion-pet zap the hell out of the corpse of someone whom you just pwned.
In particular, because I have a Goblin Shaman PvP'ing in Enhance, my pet is much larger than my own character. Enemies are even distracted by him, and waste their DPS on him, expending mana/rage/energy/focus for no discernable result, whilst I beat them to a bloody pulp.
Most people simply don't know what to make of the Ethereal Soul-Trader. Most haven't even heard of him as a pet. And I get an awful lot of whispers asking me WTF he is. Am I on some special quest? How can they get one of their own?
I've got to say that this has to be one of my favorite pets, if not my favorite pet of all. (The Rocket Chicken being one potential challenger to the Ethereal Trader's supremacy!)

The soul trader will consume the souls of the explosive barrels in Heroic: Deadmines (assuming, of course that you're the one that landed the killing blow on the barrel).
This may just be a glitch, but I believe the barrels work because they "con" yellow. There may be other objects in the world that respawn and act in the same way, this could be worth looking into.

Soul-Trader gear can now be used for transmogrification! My plate warrior now looks like a mummy...
Regarding 'transmogrification' it looks like the Soul-Trader's gear cannot be transmogrified.
From 4.3 patch notes: In general,
only items that have stats
can be used in the transmogrification process
From WoWWiki: Only common (green), rare (blue) or epic (purple) items may be transmogrified (exceptions: a select few of these items will be prevented from being used to transmogrify if they are inappropriate).
No stats on these white items
I had originally hoped to get the Soul-trader pet and obtain a complete set of the bindings with which to transmogrify my warrior's PvP outfit.
From WoWWiki: Items must share the same armor type (examples: plate for plate, cloth for cloth).
So, while these 'white' items don't have a material listed (cloth, etc.) it looks as if they do not meet the criteria for transmogrification. I'd sure like to know if anyone who has any of the Soul-trader's gear has successfully transmogged them.

Fastest way I've found to farm these credits was to make a raid group (with a friend just to get in) grab a demo. Then just go out enough where the iron dwarves come out and fire away! Don't forget to summon your pet before getting on the demo. It's very quick and easy to get credits. Hope this helped!

They know that not so many people own the Soul-Trader which is worth about 200$, they know that they wouldn't get a lot of backlash from so few people if they made him smaller, but that pet from the blizzard store hundreds of thousands of people and their grandmother have it so they did not touch it, they knew that a lot of people would complain if they did, totally appalling and disgusting.
