Quel'Serrar is the final quest reward from a questline that begins with <Foror's Compendium of Dragon Slaying>, an item that can be rarely found in Dire Maul inside of Dusty Tomes and dropped from the various bosses.
I have been fortunate enough to personally loot this book (twice) and complete the questline, therefore I'll share a few of comments of what I experienced during my trials for future Warriors & Paladins that may be preparing to do the quest line for themselves.
Once you right click on the book and accept the quest, head to the DM library and speak to one of the NPC's (Lorekeeper Lydros) there. Once you speak to him, he will give you a quest to forge the Quel'Serrar, which ultimately requires you to attend a successful Onyxia raid.
When I went to Onyxia to complete this quest I was not the main tank and was assigned a healer whose specific job was to keep me alive so that I would be able to place the blade (Unfired Ancient Blade) in the ground at the appropriate time. So basically I did my part to contribute to the raid, and then in phase 3 at around 8-10% I ran up to where the MT was standing and dropped the blade next to him. The raids DPS let up until she had breathed on it, and then we finished the kill. Once she was dead I ran up and picked up the blade, then stabbed Onyxia with it.
In order to save time, I set my hearthstone to Feralas in advance, then ran into DM North, took a left and headed to the library. Once I spoke to the NPC he awarded me with this sword.
For some people it may be difficult to get this quest completed if your guild is not currently farming her or even attempting her at all. My advice then is to check with some guilds on your server to see if you can take up a spot at their next raid to complete the quest, and perhaps even offer them a little bit of gold as well. I have had this sword for a long time now and absolutely love it.
I wish everyone who plans on getting this sword the best of luck, and hope this post provides a little bit of insight as to what to expect.

This sword is the number one tanking sword quite far in the game. You may like the Bloodlord's Defender (
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=19867
) more, because of it's "on equip"-stats, but as far as I have experienced, Quel'Serrar's proc is up almost all of the time.
13 defense and 300 armor is good stuff.

Quel'Serrar is slightly superior to Bloodlord's Defender if you are prepared to accept that it's defensive properties are less consistent.
My tests showed the "Sanctuary" Proc Rate was 1.5 to 2ppm.
For comparison it's generally accepted that the Crusader Enchant is 1ppm.
My QS had the Crusader Enchant and I performed testing with over 2000 attacks recording the procs of each.
Is the Sword worth the effort?
I did close to 200 runs to Dire Maul hoping to find this book and never did. What I did was save most of the money I made ON those runs ready to buy it should it appear on the AH. Eventually it did and I paid a fortune for it and would say it's not worth that time/money if you Raiding Zul'Gurub or Blackwing Lair.
Then again this weapon is somewhat "Iconic" which some like me can't put a price on.

If you happen to get Foror's Compendium from just running DM for fun sometime, just sell it and save the cash for your flying mount. Otherwise, don't bother buying it. If you're in a raiding guild, several swords, including Bloodlord's Defender, and especially Maladath, are just as good or better than QS.
The expansion is out in less than 6 weeks, and it appears that quest rewards from the low 60s are comparable or better to this sword.

Is very nice due the new talents in patch 2.0 You don't need a very fast tanking weapon, if you are protection spec. QS Would still be better thats true, but if your guild killed Razorgore and you can't get bloodlord's defender, and don't want to farm a year to get QS, then Spineshatter is pretty nice.

One of the best Tanking weapons in the game. If you happen to find the book for cheap or happen to find it in Dire Maul..You'll be a happy Tank. By the way this weapon should go to a warrior.

Besides, Bloodlord's Defender is easier to get.

This is a great tanking wepon for a lvl 60 guild that just started MC, ZG, or Ony. The nice dps and rage gain is very good. Even though Paladin's can use it it still a good tanking wepon to both classes. Yes Paladins can tank..

Great weapon for tanking for warriors. Although I don't believe it is the BEST in the game so far. There are a few weapons supierior to this but they are quite difficult to obtain. Once the book(Foror's Compendium of Dragonslaying) is acquired, you will need to turn it in located in the Dire Maul library. After that you should get a quest to head to Onyxia's Lair and at a low percentage of life, allow her to breathe on the weapon and then stab her with your heated blade, you will then have to turn in the quest for your Quel' Serrar.
Hope I was of help to you all!

If you are intent on getting this weapon then I recommend you keep a close eye on your local AH for the Foror's Compendium of Dragon Slaying. Some bargains are bound to appear now that TBC is approaching.
I would not recommend farming for this since it has a very low drop rate.
I purchased this book a couple of months back and I have never regretted it. True, you may need your gold for your flying mount in TBC but I am confident that gold will be a lot easier to come by when you get into the expansion.
Bloodlord's Defender is a great weapon as well, but it's drop rate is around 4-5%. That means you would need to run an average of 20x ZG's to see it drop (and then compete with your other guild members to get it).
Give me Quel'Serrar anyday!

Of course Thunderfury is better, it's a Legendary item, and obtained via a ridiculously expensive quest chain that depends on ultra rare drops from Molten Core, silly >.>
On my server the Compendium is turning up on the AH for between 150-200 gold. My warrior never got it, despite so many runs in Dire Maul I could tank it blindfolded. And of course, since TBC it's been far surpassed.
However....what's really nice is that my Paladin alt, a lowly level 37 at the moment, has Foror's Compendium in the bank waiting. 10 people (all level 70, of course) who know what they are doing can take Onyxia these days, even in a PuG. So I'm guaranteed to finally wield Quel'serrar, which is something I always wanted. It's an iconic blade, and still one of the best looking in the game (I prefer its aesthetic to the Sun Eater, which looks like a plank of painted red wood held together with wire) .
So...150 gold isn't really a lot to pay for that. Looks aren't everything, but they count for something.

There's a rumour floating around that there will be upgrades and perhaps even a legendary coming upgrade to Quel'Serrar, seems as some pictures have been datamined too. More information can be found at wowwiki.com/Quel'Serrar. Doesn't seem to far fetched to me, since Blizzard has said that they would like to give users more unusual things that makes your character unique, as with the Scarab Lord title.
So getting one, even now, might still be worth it in the long run.

I'd just like to make a note here:
I'd had this book waiting ready for my Horde Paladin since a week or so prior to TBC. I'd decided she would be Protection spec, and wanted to have an ex-high elf wielding the 'high blade'. I have submitted a screen which I took recently, of her in her current gear save for this sword which I keep for sentimental value. As far as we are aware, I was the first Horde Paladin on our server to wield the sword (not the first 70 to do so sadly, as my levelling tends to be somewhat slow).
This is the part of the story that almost cost me the effort of 60 levels and the Onyxia prequest:
After handing in the book to the library, you are given an item to 'drop' infront of Onyxia. Sadly upon my return to Orgrimmar I was a little careless and plopped the thing down right infront of the auction house, with a gathering of confused Horde around me. Red faced, I had to admit i'd just thrown away my chance at Quel'Serra, and quickly got in touch with a GM.
I thought seeing as how the book was consumed and the sword was now sticking out like a sore thumb in our major hub, that i'd have to re-purchase the book. This is not the case.
If you fail in any part between handing the book into Dire Maul and bringing a heated sword back, simply drop the quest and the Elven librarian will allow you to pick it up again. In short - you haven't just wasted your gold if Onyxia *somehow* manages to wipe you.
The Quel'Serra is somewhat of a cult weapon. Considering the lore behind Blood Elves and Quel'Thalas and this blade, I consider it iconic to have.
I tanked Ramparts all the way up to Mechanar where I took the Mana Wraith as a replacement with this sword.
Is it worth the effort? Most deffinately, even if you're a fellow Horde with a long, horrible Onyxia attunement. If you're the kind of player who likes to have retro/lore-bound items and a great story to tell for your gear, go for it.
Is it worth anything over 200g? No, simply. It *is* a nice weapon for breaking out into Outland, especially considering nowadays most levelling folk skip right past UBRS/Strat/Scholo and fail to obtain half decent Azerothian gear.
I got many tells from people who would pass me as a 62ish Blood Elf Paladin and enquire about my sword. Most seemed more amazed that I stayed in Azeroth longer than necessary to complete the attunement.

Just bought the book off the auction house last night for 75g and completed the quest chain. Onyxia went down in a 5-man:
1 Warrior
1 Druid
1 Rogue
2 Priests
An easy fight, in kara epics she was tickling me with the strikes that actually got through. Good heals and a bit of common sense make this fight an absolute breeze.
I got the sword at about 4:30am last night, and I am going to use it over my Gromtor's Charge... Yes I lose a few stats but I gain a whole bunch of style. The sword looks really unique these days and imho it was worth the time and effort.
And before I get "wtfnoob if your guild is farming kara then why you not have kings defender/sun eater?". I have farmed heroic mech close to 30 times, and chess nearly the same and I have never seen either drop. Though I guess with the fresh kara tonight sod's law says King's Defender will drop.
I will be using Q'S for RP aswell as it has a nice story to it and alot of people who have rolled since TBC will be new to it.
My two cents,

You know, a lot of people would like to say that Blizzard dropped this weapon off the face of the planet and never looked back, how ever I find the opposite to be true. If you go through all current weapon models, quel'serrar remains a unique looking weapon (unlike a lot of the armor/other weapons). In a way I see it as them paying homage to it, because when people wear it others will go "Ohh, what's that weapon?! I've never seen it before!"
I personally still use my quel'serrar if I'm running lowbies through an instance, or just running through a major city. It's a nice piece of eye candy along with the thunderfury, but it hurts to say that's all it is now, eye candy

Well recently, very recently the latest patch has done something I think is awful to this amazing item. The heavenly glow around our Beloved Quel'Serrar has diminished into just a light glow at the upper half of the blade!
Before as you can see in pics, and like mine used to be, you see it has an outstanding glow to the sword without enchant. But now my sword is dull looking and it seems they really took something away from my favorite sword with this new patch..
For all of you who are still faithful to the beauty of this sword, I feel it has been struck with a great blow. I hope they change it back!

This is an awesome weapon and still has it's uses, now. Although if your planning to try and obtain Foror's book, then your best bet would be running DM North, You will ofc need the key from DM east, this is obtained by Killing the imp after chasing across half the instance (Oh so fun)
DM North - Stealthers
I did this using my 70 Feral druid, in T4 level gear, farming for my prot warrior.
Once you have the key, go into DM north by the main entrance.Go down teh steps directly infront of you watch out for the dog as they see through stealth, Kill the orge guard for the Inner door key. Continue up the step on the opposite side you entered from, turn left and stay on the left edge of the path, avoiding the two packs.
Now once you've reached teh corner turn left watchign out for the patrol, then turn right so your facing the steps and the middle entrance to the walled courtyard, there is another patrol containing dog so watch out for this. In the middle of he courtyard you'll find a box, open this for another key <insert name here> Go down the step and wait in the door way, for the next ogre guard to come round, kill him as he has a chance to drop the book
Also note that there is supposed to be a dusty tome spawn point in the South west corner but i'v never found it.
Proceed through the door, staying to the left watching out for a patroling Eye of Kilrog thing ( sees through stealth) this is easily avoided but can creep up on you, it summon to adds given the chance.
You will not come to a room Filled with bugs, opening out to hold a goblin several packs and another boss. Park yourself on the Apex on the room, just behind a skeleton, from here you can pull with relative safety.
Now go to your left and up the series of ramps, from the second to the third one you will see two ogres facing inwards to the entrance of the walkway, cut around the back of teh left ogre to circumvent this, you shouldn't be seen. Once at the top you will see the door requiring the Inner door key, you will ofc need to kill the two ogres guarding it. Once through follow it around to your left and i recommend killing the pakc immediatly infront of you as for some reason they seem to be pulled after teh death of the captain. Once dead proceed to kill the Captain.
You'll now enter a wide open courtyard with several stationary packs, roaming dogs in the midddle the two bosses and a pair of dog patroling around the room, these somthing can be pulled after engaging teh boss so you may want to kill them.
My strat was to Kill the priest type boss first, the move onto the main guy.
This completes the stealthers guide to farming DM north,, this is ofc only my method and i'm sure others have many other ways of doing it, i only wish to offer my advice on teh subject.
Once you have the accept teh quest and go to DM north, (Bare in mind that you must have the Cresent Key, This is obtained from the imp chase in DM east)
Enter from the normal entrance, go down into the courtyard and down to a big dor, this also require the Cresent Key, You'll go through a long tunnel and eventually come out in the Library, Directly infront of you is the needed NPC, You turn the book over to him and after talkign to him he gives you an Unfired Ancient Blade.
Go to Onyxia, this can be easliy done with 2 level 80s. You should be looking to put teh blade down infont of her where she is being tanked and 10-15%, during Phase 3, due to there being a timer for having put hte blade in the ground, it disappearing after 20-25 minutes, and also if you put the blade down at the beginning of the fight, having it heated and picking it up before it despawns, it will still most likly despawn, i don't know the length of this timer.
So, you've up the blade down at around 10-15%, and it's been fired, Once she Dies pick the blade up, and the use it, you will then recive the Treated Ancient Blade, you must then go back to the DM North Library.
Remeber if you make a mistake you can always abandon and re accept from the same NPC in DM library,
Hope this helps.
P.S If you'r a level 60 odd being helped by level 80s, just try to stay out of the way and not get hit into the Whelps, i can Also recommend that a Pally tank, Resto druid and a Lock/Mage is one of the best combos for me, although i have done it with a Fury Warrrior and a Shadow priest.

since all we're good for now is DPS (And heals if you're a Paladin)
Ugh... I'm a Protection Paladin, and have been so since the very beginning of The Burning Crusade. I don't have any troubles tanking, and I can't see why anyone would have. Protection Paladins have received an awful lot of buffs over time, so if you think they're useless, you've never had a decent Paladin Tank.
Sure, Death Knights and Druids are very good for fights such as Malygos and Sartharion, due to their high ammounts of health or mitigation cooldowns, but I'll never spec Retribution. Warriors and Protection Paladins can block, which is superior to high stamina in some fights, and in others it's not used at all. Every tanking class has got its strengths and weaknesses, but saying that Warriors and Paladins are useless now doesn't make sense.
--
Anyway, back to the topic of the sword. I just got it after farming Dire Maul for my Steamwheedle Cartel reputation, and I'm very happy about the glow having been reduced. I thought it looked ridiculous before, I mean, you could barely see the sword itself.
I don't see why it should be made available for Death Knights though. If Death Knights were allowed to use it, every class who could use a sword should be able to get it as well.
It's different with the Legendary weapons, because those will reward you with a Feat of Strength and requires a lot more work.

When MgT was released i was hunting for the epic mace to tank with from kael'thas, i got it 1 day prior to LK patch and spell power was useless for retri palas. So i decided to take this baby out of the bank and use it once more... people thought "wtf" but i was happy to show em this baby still does the job right.

Got this blade tonight, and, indeed, couldn't be happier - this was one of the most valuable weapon for tanks pre-tbc and remains (arguably) the most beautiful one-handed sword in the game.
As a moderately geared level 80 retribution paladin, I completed the whole questline in less than an hour - including the soloing of Onyxia and quite lengthy road trips. I had the
Crescent key
already, but getting it doesn't require a lot of time either. The great guide to the whole chain is provided by
Sagerauru
here
, you don't really need to know anything else.
The compendium
itself cost me 200g, which I consider a bargain, taking into account the randomness of the drop and the miniscule amount of people farming (or just completing) Dire Maul nowadays.
And, mentioning again, the result is really worth the effort.

That would be Ashbringer its the only one that makes sense and after reading the books, the event in South shore during Durnhold the what they found has to be Death wings golden disc. Forged with the essences of the 5 aspects, Used ON the aspects (Why Malygos is insane, Death Wing killed 90% of the blue flight with it). The way they described it in War Of The Ancients it looks exactly like the disc in Ashbringer
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=13262
well that and blizz hinted at Ashbringer constantly. When they found it the disc was corrupted like how it was when Deathwing had it and then purified it to pure light. Well, thats what i think cause it makes a bit of sense and its something Metzen would think of.

They showed a screenshot of the new stats of the Quel but no picture unfortunately. The screen was blurry, but there was a 2h version shown as well. No word on if you would need the old one to get the new one, or reforging anything as in the first one, but it looks as though it's just a drop.

Quel will be redone with Cataclysm, heard it live at Blizzcon. Not sure if the old one will stay in game, either way, farm yours now!

Try reading my post before you reply and downrate.
The point is to bring back old iconic weapons and gear through the revival of Onyxia.
But those items will still need to have proper stats, that sword does not. Not to mention Blizzard have already said the sword is not real.
Because as i said before, they would not limit the sword to 2 out of 3 tanking classes.
Edit: People seem to be really stupid about this. Im not saying that they will not implement a new Quel'Serrar with Onyxia.
I was replying to
Stats from MMO Champ untill it is added on Wowhead:
If a new Quel'Serrar drops from Onyxia, it will not have those stats.

Got the Gleaming Quel'Serrar today on the PTR.
Looks like they added DK's as one of the classes that can wield this.
screenshot with stats:
http://yfrog.com/2bwowscrnshot082909165040j
The proc adds about 20 defense at level 80. (use math for exact number)
Would post this on the appropriate item page but doesn't look like wowhead has the PTR items yet.
Edit: After whacking the target dummy for few min, I would guess the PPM of the proc is around 1-2 PPM.

What's the time limit on getting the sword back to Dire Maul to hand in once Onyxia breathes on it?
EDIT: N/m, got it earlier today, didn't appear to be any actual timer on it. Now the sword can sit in my bank for eternity next to Old Crafty :D

I just checked today, and there is no Feat of Strength or Achievement or anything that's new in regards to the old Quel'Serrar. The sword is sitting in my bank exactly as I had left it.
The old Onyxia achievement was converted to a Feat of Strength, however.

* Re-forge Quel'Delar - Combine 5 Infused Saronite Bars with the Batterd Hilt to re-forge Quel'Delar. You must be standing at one of the Forgemaster's Anvils.
* Quel'Delar's Compulsion - Quel'Delar seems to have a will of its own. It seems to want you to go to the Halls of Reflection in Icecrown Citadel.
* Temper Quel'Delar - Temper Quel'Delar in the Crucible of Souls. Only works inside the Forge of Souls.
* Cleanse Quel'Delar - Immerse Quel'Delar in the Sunwell.
* Quel'Delar's Wrath - Inflicts 2437500 to 2562500 Shadow damage.
* Krasus Quel'Delar Credit
3.3 Patch Notes. There's a location just south of the Argent Tournament in Icecrown called Quel'Delar's Rest, where a sword is stuck in the ground, with 5 different lamps hanging around it. Think of this what you will, but I think this is quite possibly the Prismatic Blade.

i had the quest when the new onyxia arrived.
the quest was removed from my log.
the quest item no longer has a "use" function to it anymore. it's just there.
you cannot do this quest anymore.

Funny that Foror's Compendium still exists as an item.... it just no longer starts a quest.
Gratz to all of those who got this cool sword in its original form.
Any sword that is created with dragon blood is good in my books.

Aesthetically speaking this weapon is absolutely perfect, and in my opinion holds the best model of any weapon in the game, led closely by Armageddon and Maladath, Runed Blade of the Black Flight. However, statistically speaking, I found this weapon to be a huge let down. I've never been a fan of relying on weapon procs, I feel putting faith in a random, and uncontrollable event is a mistake. Reliability, reliability, reliability. Those words are unimaginably important in proper tanking theory. If the proc is only up 1/4th of the time, what good is it the other 3/4th of the time? If you can survive 10 seconds in a boss fight that's great, but surviving ten seconds is pointless if you can't survive the next 30. However, in my book this is still tied for third best tanking weapon pre-tbc, behind Sickle of Unyielding Strength, and The Hungering Cold. Tied with BloodLord's Defender (In my opinion.).
If you're an armorynazi like I am and LOVE to collect exotic weaponry however, this weapon is a must have, even if only for aesthetic value. It truly is a work of art.

That, and we have no idea where Nozdormu and Deathwing are, while Ysera is a little off her kilter of late.
Any quest that would go in may require you to re-visit Malygos, but I doubt it... Blizz has stated time and again their intention to push forward, and introducing a new quest for a legendary weapon that requires you to visit a Raid dungeon that's... what, two tiers below you as of the next content patch?
There's still the mystery of the sword stuck into the dragon skull near the Argent Tournament. I wouldn't be totally surprised were it part of a questline for an epic weapon for casuals (no offense to anyone, as I'm one of the biggest casuals out there) as the Tournament expands, so it might be a different Quel'serrar (as the librarian said there were several). Who knows though.
Whatever they do, if they do anything, it won't have anything directly to do with the old Quel'serrar, going by Blizzard's past actions. I doubt they would throw in a level 80 weapon upgrade, as they've said time and again that they don't want to bother with upgrading legendaries, so I'd take from that that epics are also out of the picture. If they do anything, it's going to be a fresh quest for a fresh sword.
Nozdormu is everywhen, and Deathwing is in Deatholme.

The questchain for this item, has been presumed officially taken out of the game since the new Onyxia drops Gleaming Quel'Serrar and Burnished Quel'Serrar. The item no longer gives the quest if you have it, and no longer drops.

Why the hell wielders of this sword are not encouraged by Feast of Strength achievment?

Your old Main Tank's Quel'Serrar. This is the weapon of an MC Raider. Not as clumsy or random as a
爆击猎枪
; an elegant weapon for a bygone raiding era. For over a hundred raid resets, the wielders of this sword were the guardians of healers and DPS'ers in the Old Raids. Before the dark times....before boss recycling.

I would really appreciate that the original Quel'serrar skin (model) be preserved as unique once it was so difficult to get. The Onyxia (80's) are easily farmed, and the original one is quite rare. For transmog, this would be quite unique.
Thumbs up if you support this idea!

The item Quel'Serrar and its versions from onyxia are not available to demon hunters for transmog, This is limited by the restriction set on the item with the affix: "Classes: Warrior, Paladin, Death Knight, Monk". Demon Hunters were not added when Legion was released.
It was originally a paladin/warrior tank weapon, which was only available through a long and epic questline back in vanilla (I got it on my warrior back then ^^). And afaik it does not fit the lore and style for demon hunters, although it would look neat. It's a design decision made early on before Legion launch by the developers to
not
add it as transmog for demon hunters (scource: some random GM I asked about this).
