As of September 7, 2007, the chest, the key and the riddle remains unsolved. The ridde that has been given is as following:

"Once hidden amonst the rubble of a statue out of place in the great city turned forsaken. Humans will never return for the sounds of the dead ring loud in the halls surounding the throne room closed from the world. The sense of the unseen bushes you as you pass. The key has been stolen by one man not quite dead, but not quite alive, cursed by the touch of Salem. He lost himself to the world so that only those whom can save him, who would risk thier own life to hand him an unseen arm of salvation. The man has been drivin mad by his solitude and often speaks to himself to easy the loneliness of eternity torn."

According to a GM, the chest "does not hold much bearing on anything, but in the future it may play a more important part in the game". He also adds, "... many players have spent a lot of time searching for the Key to Salem's Chest, I would advice you not do the same".

Much like the netherwing before the netherwing-patch, only this one doesn't seem to have an ETA.

Strangely if you link this item in-game, the link will actually work. If you link an item currently that has not been obtained by a player on your server (Reins of the Time-Lost Protodrake at the start of WoTLK for example) the link will not work. This means the item HAS been obtained by someone (at least on my server) at some point, but if it was a GM that had it, well that's another story.

It's rumored to be apart of the ashbringer questline involving the NPC at the Bulwark for the Horde, and Chillwind for the Alliance, and the phylactery of Timolain, the mage they refer to.

I could settle for a "doesn't exist" explanation if it indeed didn't exist, but this key is right here! Now where the hell is Lillian Voss with the chest to this key (weird, i know)? She made an assault to the site of the chest before it disappeared, making her the last person to see it, and another camp in Western Plagelands was wiped by her, no quest or anything whatsoever explaining it.
