Using this causes a faction-wide /yell from Tower Lookout saying:

Alliance spotted! Location is marked on your map!

A big red cross is placed on the map of every Horde player, indicating your current location.

This obviously has its use in announcing enemy movements and surprise intrusions, especially if you're not part of a raid group.
