I'm looking to start doing arenas, but I find my gear to be absolutely horrible. It's standard quest rewards/PVE grind equip.
Will this be a good entry point for me to aim for? The set seems pretty decent, but I'm not sure whether or not there are better alternatives which can be reached compared to this effort/timewise?
Thanks in advance.

MARALYGOS'S GUIDE TO LOCK PvP
I'm not the world's leading expert on PvP, but I've done enough research to help out my fellow locks. I find it hard to find a comprehensive guide so I'm gonna compile my findings for you here.
First, BG's are your friend. If you always lose, try finding some people to go with you or PvP at a different time. Honor is the key here, as marks aren't needed to buy gear any more. You can use marks for more honor however, or if you want another achievement use them for the PvP mounts.
Second, get into arenas ASAP, the points will be needed to get higher level gear later.
Third, VoA. You can do the Wintergrasp raid, Vault of Archavon, twice a week. The 10 man can drop Hateful Gladiator's set pieces, and 25 man can drop the Deadly pieces. The helm you can only get with honor or arena points. There is no reason to not be running VoA, 2 of each badge + chance at gear + easy raid = Do it.
Early Gear
For your early gear you want to focus on a few key points. You want to be hit capped asap, you want a lot of resilience and a lot of hp. Locks are clothies, even with our Demon Armor we can't take hits like a melee class can. Resilience will help by reducing crits and hp will give you longer to get away.
Note:
-The top 2v2, 3v3, and Battleground build is a 54/17/0 affliction build. There are several variations, so just look some up and see what works best. Watch your hit rating, if you can use gems + gear to hit 6%, then don't go into the hit talents as far, if at all.
-PvP spell hit cap is 6%, that means 160 hit rating for us locks. 80 rating if you take 3 points into the hit talent.
-Use
Demonic Circle
in arenas to break LOS or to get out of stuns. If you're getting killed, port.
-Use
Demon Armor
over
Fel Armor
when facing melee classes. Otherwise go with fel armor the extra spell power.
-Make us of your spellstones. They do help, and no longer take up your wand spot.
-Make health stones for everyone. I suggest the Health Stone talent over the Pet heal one, as I find healing your pet is a waste of time. I don't think it makes that big of a difference, but personal experience says more hp > heal pet.
-Make sure to buff everyone with
Underwater Breathing
and
Detect Invisibility
. Why? Because if your enemy uses a dispell to take out another helpful buff, one of these might get taken instead. Since these are honestly worthless in arena, it means your enemy will have to waste time eating away at your buffs.
-You need 76 Spell Penetration to counter improved Mark of the Wild (54 untalented), 130 to counter priests Shadow Protection buff, and 140 to counter Mages with talented mage armor. Shoot for what you think you'll need with gear and gems, probally about 76 or so. Your wand and offhand will give some, and there are 9sp/10spellpen gems that are really good.
-As soon as your arena rating allows, upgrade. Stop arenas and go get that next upgrade. If you can't afford it, then you can continue or stop and wait a week. The choice is yours, but if you can keep winning then I would say continue.
Early gear build for Arena: (Upgrade when you can, the stat choices will remain fairly constant. If you're lacking in a certain stat, you can re-gem or re-chant, or change out pieces, you have freedom on how to reach stats you need)
Helm
Titan-forged Hood of Dominance
You should pick this up fairly soon, as the meta socket can make a big difference. If you don't need the hit pick up the helm of Salvation.
Best meta's are
Trenchant Earthsiege Diamond
or
Powerful Earthsiege Diamond
or
Tireless Skyflare Diamond
. If you find you have enough hp, go for one of the +25sp ones. I suggest stun reduction over run speed, as there is an enchant for boots with stam/run speed, and the speeds DO NOT stack.
Arcanum: Either
Arcanum of Dominance
or
Arcanum of the Savage Gladiator
if you need the hp.
Neck
Hateful Gladiator's Pendant of Subjugation
You shouldn't need hit with the helm and offhand I suggest for starters.
Shoulder
Savage Gladiator's Felweave Amice
Get Hateful and then Deadly. Duh. Hopefully VoA is generous for you.
Inscription:
Greater Inscription of the Storm
from the Sons of Hodir is a good one. There's also
Inscription of Dominance
that is also really good. Personal choice, although I think the Wintergrasp the better for PvP.
Back
Hateful Gladiator's Cloak of Subjugation
Go with this back as with the helm and starter offhand I suggest plus talents to start should hit cap you. Once you're hit capped you want to stack haste.
Enchant:
Enchant Cloak - Greater Speed
This is the best in my opinion. Some go with the tailoring *chance on hit to deal extra damage. If you aren't a tailor, go with haste.
Chest
Savage Gladiator's Felweave Raiment
Get Hateful and then Deadly. Duh. Hopefully VoA is generous for you.
Enchant:
Enchant Chest - Exceptional Resilience
or
Enchant Chest - Powerful Stats
If 10 stats is too expensive go with +8 stats. This is one is a toss up for the two, I see locks go both ways, so see what you need more and go that way.
Wrist
Hateful Gladiator's Cuffs of Dominance
Spirit is almost worthless to a PvP lock, as you'll run
Demon Armor
over
Fel Armor
most of the time.
Enchant:
Enchant Bracers - Superior Spellpower
or
Enchant Bracers - Major Stamina
If you need hp, go with stam, otherwise use the spellpower one.
Hands
Savage Gladiator's Felweave Handguards
Get Hateful and then Deadly. Duh. Hopefully VoA is generous for you.
Enchant:
Enchant Gloves - Exceptional Spellpower
Waist
Hateful Gladiator's Cord of Dominance
Same as bracers, crit over spirit.
Be sure to add an
Eternal Belt Buckle
for the extra gem.
Legs
Savage Gladiator's Felweave Trousers
Get Hateful and then Deadly. Duh. Hopefully VoA is generous for you.
Attachment: Go with
Sapphire Spellthread
or the tailor embroidery if you're a tailor.

Feet
Titan-forged Slippers of Salvation
15 Wintergrasp marks make these easy to get. I suggest these until you can pick up the Hateful or Deadly boots.
Enchant:
Enchant Boots - Tuskarr's Vitality
or
Enchant Boots - Icewalker
. I suggest Tuskarr's over Icewalker unless you need the hit.
Ring 1
Hateful Gladiator's Band of Dominance
A must have. I don't know any arena locks w/o this.
Enchant:
Enchant Ring - Greater Spellpower
or
Enchant Ring - Stamina
if you're an enchanter.
Ring 2
There is no definitive PvP ring for this slot starting out. Get what you can to help you out. You'll want to pick up the deadly ring when you get higher into arenas.
Enchant:
Enchant Ring - Greater Spellpower
or
Enchant Ring - Stamina
if you're an enchanter.
Trinket 1
Flow of Knowledge
I suggest picking this up for 15 Wintergrasp marks fairly soon. It's a good trinket, and you'll keep it until you pick up your Battlemaster's.
Trinket 2
Medallion of the Horde
One of the first things to pick up. You cannot arena without this. Period. You'll keep it forever too, so get it first if you can.
Main Hand
Hateful Gladiator's Spellblade
If you don't have a raid weapon with 408 sp or better, then pick this up.
Enchant:
Enchant Weapon - Mighty Spellpower
is best, but if you think the cost is too high you can settle for the +50sp chant. Once you have the best dagger, definetly pick up the +63sp.
Off-hand
Hateful Gladiator's Grimoire
I think spell penetration is your best bet here and on wand. See notes at top for reason why. You can pick up
Ward of the Violet Citadel
Early and easily with badges, and this will give you hit you'll need to cap. A great offhand until you can pick up the PvP one.
Wand
Hateful Gladiator's Piercing Touch
I think spell penetration is your best bet here and on offhand. See notes at top for reason why.
Staff
I suggest you go with Main hand/offhand, as overall you'll achieve higher stats. If you don't have a pair that outdoes your current staff, then you should stick with it until you get better main/off hand items.
Gems
Kharmaa's Grace
is a good starter that's easy to get from Wintergrasp. Yellow socket. I put one in my boots to fulfill their socket bonus.
Glowing Twilight Opal
or
Mysterious Twilight Opal
are really good choices for a Red or Blue socket.
Durable Monarch Topaz
for a Red or Yellow slot. There are other sp/hit or haste or crit Orange gems if you really need the other stats.
Steady Forest Emerald
is a solid starter to up your resil and stam.
Shattered Forest Emerald
is a good choice if you need spell pen. and has a hit/spell pen variation.
Runed Scarlet Ruby
is a solid Red socket choice although I prefer other gems that give me a mix.
Mystic Autumn's Glow
is a decent Yellow socket, although I prefer Kharmaa's Grace, and after that I prefer gems with 2 stats.
Solid Sky Sapphire
is a good choice if you REALLY need hp, otherwise I'd skip it.
Stormy Sky Sapphire
is a good choice if you need spell pen., although I prefer the gems with 2 stats.
Glyphs
Major:
Frequently Chosen
Glyph of Corruption - You Corruption spell has a 4% chance to cause you to enter a Shadow Trance state after damaging the opponent. This stacks with nightfall. (8% chance for nightfall = win. I love this)
Glyph of Fear - Increases the damage your Fear target can take before the Fear effect is removed by 20%. (Not my favorite, as fears often don't last long, so I feel this has less weight than others)
Glyph of Howl of Terror - Reduces the cooldown on your Howl of Terror spell by 8 sec. (Talents can make this obsolete)
Glyph of Siphon Life - Increases the effect of your Siphon Life spell by 20%. (More health coming back is never a bad thing, and it does more damage. A great one)
Glyph of Unstable Affliction - Decreases the casting time of your Unstable Affliction by 0.2 sec. (Faster casting is fantastic. I recommend this as a 3rd)
Moderately Chosen
Glyph of Curse of Agony - Increases the duration of your Curse of Agony by 4 sec. This adds two middle-damage ticks.
Glyph of Healthstone - You receive 30% more healing from using a healthstone.
Glyph of Shadowburn - Increases the critical strike chance of Shadowburn by 20% when the target is below 35% health.
Rarely or Never Chosen
Glyph of Death Coil - Increases the duration of your Death Coil by 0.5 sec.
Glyph of Felguard - Increases the Felguard's total attack power by 10%.
Glyph of Health Funnel - Increases the chance you'll resist spell interruption when channeling your Health Funnel spell by 100%.
Glyph of Immolate - Increases the periodic damage of your Immolate by 20% but decreases its initial damage by 10%.
Glyph of Imp - Increases the damage done by your Imp's Firebolt spell by 10%.
Glyph of Searing Pain - Increases the critical strike bonus of your Searing Pain by 20%. (Note: This is not +crit chance. A 1000 damage crit becomes 1200)
Glyph of Shadow Bolt - Reduces the mana cost of your Shadow Bolt by 10%.
Glyph of Voidwalker - Increases your Voidwalker's total Stamina by 20%.
Minor:
Glyph of Curse of Exhaustion - Increases the range of your Curse of Exhaustion spell by 5 yards.
The rest are personal preference.
Professions
Jewelcrafting is a good profession for PvP as you can get some very nice gems.
Enchanting is a good one for a caster as the ring enchants are quite nice, and being able to chant your own gear will make your life a little easier, if you have the skill.
Blacksmithing allows you to add sockets to certain pieces of gear, and make the belt attachments. Not bad.
Mining when at high levels will increase your stamina a bit, and skinning gives crit rating. I would take another profession over these if you can afford to buy the mats.
I don't consider any other profession worth mentioning.
Pets
The
Fel Hunter
and
Succubus
are about the only two PvP choices. Situational, so pick whichever you think you need more or that you can use better. Auto attacks aren't all lock pets are good for. Make good use of their abilities, as they can make all the difference.

I like to add that
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=37220
is quiet a nice pvp trinket to, due the high stamina and a change to lower the damage taken, I use this on my lock myself to. (trinket drops in AN HC 2nd boss)
(If you don't have better trinkets already, this is easy to obtain)
