Introduction
From the very beginning of WoW, level 1 twinks have been around trying to defy conventional wisdom. Over the years many videos have been made of them defeating much higher level characters in PvP, killing mobs in the level 50-80 range, and getting some pretty crazy achievements.
What makes them so powerful? It's a little easier now a days with the advent of BoA gear, but essentially its the enchants and buffs that they are able to get.
What makes them so popular? It's an absolute thrill to do all the things listed above. It's also something that can be created in an afternoon but can also take a lot of time to get right.
Way back in 2007 someone called making a level 1 twink an
existential WoW exercise
, and we would agree. We hope you find this guide helpful in creating yours!

Choosing Your Class
Druids are great starter level 1 twink casters. The mana usage of their spell is high, but the high starter and bonus % damage make it very effective.
Spell:
Wrath
Hunters ability to have a pet at level 1 greatly increase their potential. They are used to kite-tank mobs very effectively.
Spells:
Arcane Shot
/
Call Pet
/
Revive Pet
Mages have the highest bonus % damage of any class at 150%. In addition, they, along with Warlocks, are able to crit for 200% at level 1 while all other caster classes crit for 150%. The inherent slow of a successful Frostfire Bolt increases their functionality and desirability.
Spell:
Frostfire Bolt
Monks are an interesting choice at level 1. They function much the same way a Rogue does in both gear and energy resource but their damage is far less. However, they do benefit greatly from
Stance of the Fierce Tiger
granting both increased damage percentage and speed and makes them the only level 1 with a party buff.
Spell:
Jab
Paladins ability to spam Crusader Strike make it's damage very appealing. Coupled with the fact they can wear the plate BoAs give them a survivability edge.
Spell:
Crusader Strike
Priests have the unique classification in that their spell deals Holy damage which is not subject to resistance by any mob. So even though their damage is lower than all but the Shaman, their DPS can rank on par with the Druids. The low mana cost also figures into the equation.
Spell:
Smite
Rogues are probably he most utilized melee class. Their special has no CD and helps proc PPM based weapon enchants. This makes the Rogue the highest melee dps class.
Spell:
Sinister Strike
Shamans rank lowest on the DPS scale of all level 1 twinks. They do have a survivability edge because they can wear shields.
Spell:
Lightning Bolt
Warlocks are a high DPS class at level 1 thanks to their Imps damage, and their 200% crit modifier that they share with the Mage.
Spells:
Shadow Bolt
/
Summon Imp
Warriors have a great damage modifier to their ability, and fully hasted can spam Heroic Strike thanks to it not being on GCD. The fact that they can wear plate makes them a nice choice for survivability.
Spell:
Heroic Strike
First Things First - Turn Off XP
Obviously one of the very first things you'll want to do with your new level 1 twink in game is to turn off XP gains. In order to do so, you need to get to Slahtz in Orgrimmar or to Behsten in Stormwind and pay them 10g. They are stealthed and can be hard to see.
Behsten Location
Behsten
Slahtz Location
Slahtz
The fast ways:
Warlock summon
Mage portal
The slow way:
Run to the second town you would normally encounter outside of the starting zone
The Flight Master there will fly you for free to your races capital
If your races capital is not Orgrimmar or Stormwind, take the Zeppelin or Ship from the second city to there
Note: you will not level up on any race as long as you stick to the main roads
Choosing Your Gear
Your best gear is going to be BoA. For slots that do not have a BoA, follow the suggestions in the tabs below. There is one exception that is situational.
Sin'dorei Cloak of Warding
can be found in salvage boxes or on the AH. It has +1 stamina over the BoA cloaks, but lacks any offensive abilities.
Bracers -
+2 Armor
Hands -
Battle Worn Handguards
- This is a quest reward that is not BoP. You'll need a level 5+ to do the quest and send the gloves to your twink.
Belt -
+2 Armor
Feet -
+3 Armor
Off Hand -
Furbolg Medicine Pouch
Bracers -
+3 Armor
Hands -
Herbalist's Gloves
Belt -
Squealer's Belt
- No longer drops, but you can usually find one on the AH. If not, any +3 armor belt works.
Feet -
+4 Armor
Bracers -
+4 Armor
Hands -
Herbalist's Gloves
Belt -
+5 Armor
Feet -
+6 Armor
Main Hand Melee -
Battleworn Thrash Blade
Two Hand Melee -
Reforged Truesilver Champion
Main Hand Caster -
The Blessed Hammer of Grace
Two Hand Caster -
Grand Staff of Jordan
Ranged -
Charmed Ancient Bone Bow
Off Hand -
Furbolg Medicine Pouch
the "On Use" does not work, target level is too low
Arena Grand Master
+
1 BoA
Enchanting Your Gear
Weapon Enchant
Elemental Force
- Will produce the most damage for all classes except Hunters. Other enchants are situational only
Flintlocke's Woodchucker
- Will produce the most damage for Hunters. Other enchants may have situational uses
Armor Enchants
Neck, Cloak, and Rings
- Use the WoD "Gift of" enchants.
All other slots
- Besides the "Gift of" ones mentioned above and
Glove Reinforcements (+2 Stamina)
all enchants only give +1 to a stats. So your choice becomes what stats you want to increase by +1. While there is room for debate, this guide recommends the following priorities.
1)
Haste
- Speeds up attacks, spell cast, and resource regen. This is our best offensive stat.
2)
Stamina
- Never a bad thing to have, and you can never have too much.
3)
Crit
- Once you feel comfortable with the above, it's time to start stacking crit for increase weapon proc damage.
4)
Versatility / Multistrike
- These look interesting, but stacking enough without losing any of the above is difficult.
Also, it's important to note that speed enchants do not stack. So the foot enchant you choose should not be one that increases movement speed. My suggestion would be
Surefooted
for all classes
Final Step - Buff Up
Food
Rumsey Rum Dark
- highest stamina
Slow Smoked Turkey
(+8 AP & +4 Sta) /
Congealed Cranberry Chutney
(+4 SP & +4 Sta) - Balance between DPS and survival
Twice Baked Sweet Potato
(+3 Haste) - highest damage
Guardian Elixir/Scroll
Weak Troll's Blood Elixir
- use for long PvE fights, has more effective health then stamina scroll if the fight lasts longer than 1 min 15 sec
Scroll of Stamina
Battle Elixir/Scroll
Darkmoon Tincture of Alacrity
/
Darkmoon Draught of Alacrity
(2.23% Haste)
Weapon Buffs
Rough Sharpening Stone
Rough Weightstone
Other Buffs
Tents
- Blood Elven Tent is linked, but they all give the same buff. They're all "unique 5" but that only applies to the individual tent, you may have 5 of each kind
Lukcy Rocket Cluster
- gives +250 HP ... don't forget your
Cluster Launchers
!
Drums of Fury
Iron Boot Flask
- using this toy gives you a buff that procs
Electric Discharge
(+225 damage proc)
Bloodthistle
- Blood Elf Casters Only (+10 SP)
Discombobulator Ray
- useful in PVP and PVE situations where you are fighting within 30+/- levels. Shares CD with Drums of Fury
Healing
Fizzy Apple Cider
- Best if your HP are greater than 576 (available 6.2 Winter Veil)
Darkmoon Healing Tonic
- Use until Winter Veil if your HP are greater than 720
Minor Healing Potion
- Use if your HP are lower than 576
Charged Crystal Focus
- NOT on the same CD as heal pots
Shadowberry
- Rejuv for level 1s
Deviate Fish
- LAST RESORT: Can give a rejuv or big heal, but may also put you to sleep...there are a LOT of different possibilities
Rallying Cry of the Dragonslayer
Raptor Punch
Bogling Root
Energizing Spores
- gained by standing next to a Sporebat in Zangramarsh when it's killed, only last 5 min...but +30 stats
Glowing Cat Figurine
- here kitty kitty kitty
Priest:
Power Word: Fortitude
Paladin:
Blessing of Kings
-or- Druid:
Mark of the Wild
Warlock:
Dark Intent
Monk:
Legacy of the White Tiger
Mage:
Arcane Brilliance

Great guide! I've just started twinking out a level 1, does the armor rating really matter on gear at level 1 or can I go for things that just look good and enchant them?

Very useful information here. Just a note - it is possible to get a Worgen out of the starting zone and get to Stormwind to turn off XP at level 1.
