Introduction
Ventrilo is one of the premiere internet Voice-over-IP communication tools in use by millions and is fairly painless to install and use. First, make sure that you download the
Ventrilo Client
and install it before you begin.
Setup
Setup a User Name
Click the arrow to the right of
User Name
and the
Setup User
window will open.
Click the New button. This lets you create a user name of your choice. The other fields in this window are for more advanced users, but for this tutorial we'll just leave them blank.
Put in a witty name for yourself and click the OK button and the program will return you to the main window.
Add a Server
Click the arrow to the right of
Server
and the
Connection Editor
will now open.
Click the New button to create a name for the server you are about to add.
The name you choose should remind you or relate to the server in some meaningful way.
After you give it a name all of the other input fields in this window will be enabled and you can can fill them in with the information given to you. Click OK when done.
Connect to the Server
If you have put in the information correctly then Ventrilo will connect to the server and you will see a list of channel names and other connected users.
NOTE:
If you click the connect button and it just sits there for 15 to 30 seconds then you either entered the wrong information or the server is currently offline. In either event you should contact the person who gave you the server information and request their assistance.
Settings
That's all there is to getting the client up and running. However there are a few additional settings you may want to adjust. Ventrilo has many options for controlling the hardware and it's functions, which are sometimes important depending on your Operating System, hardware drivers and other applications installed. The following items are highly recommended for an optimal configuration.
DirectSound (Windows-only)
In Setup -> Voice, look at each of the following options:
"Use DirectSound for Output device"
This will make your Output Device the "Default DirectSound device". If you have more then one sound card you will need to select which device you want all voice communication to be sent to.
"Use DirectSound for Input Device"
This will make your Input Device the "Default DirectSound device". If you have more then one sound card you will need to select which device to monitor when you are transmitting.
Select a Mixer / Mux / Line
You should select the same device as your "Input Device" in the option above it. There should only be one Mux option. The Line option will allow you to select what portion of the sound cards hardware to monitor. Under normal conditions this should be called "Microphone" but you might need to manually select it. When you select a Mixer / Mux / Line the program will enable the
Line Volume
slider. You should slide this up about half way to start with. It is the primary control that tells your sound card how to control the signal strength coming from your Microphone or input device.
Volume Normalization (Windows-only)
Click "SFX" (short for Special Effects) to bring up the effects window and add the
"Compressor"
effect. The following six settings need to be adjusted:
Gain 0
This can usually be left at 0, unless you're having difficulty hearing most of the people on the channel. Gain controls how much volume is sent to the compressor. Turning it up a little (10 or 15) may help, but turning it up a lot causes significant sound degradation.
Attack 0.01
Attack determines how quickly the effect is applied to the sound, in milliseconds, and can be turned down to the minimum of 0.01. The default is 10, which is also quite fast. The maximum of 500 creates an unpleasant half second delay before a loud incoming sound is adjusted.
Release 200 - 500
The length of time the compressor remains on after the sound has stopped is determined with the Release setting. The default of 200 milliseconds typically works, but some people turn this up to 500 or even 1000 (1 second).
Threshold -30
The level at or above which the compressor kicks in is the Threshold. -30 will make the quiet people a bit more audible, while still keeping the loud types from blasting you. This setting is measured in decibels, with 0 being very loud and -60 being very quiet.
Ratio 100
Ratio sets how much variation in volume remains after the compressor has done its job. Most people put this right up to 100 so there is as little variation in volume as possible. Although the default setting of 3 leaves some variation in, it also works.
Pre delay 4.0
This is a digital sound processor function that determines how far your system "looks ahead" for sounds that need adjustment, again in milliseconds. This is best left at the maximum of 4.
Transmit Method
Ventrilo supports two different transmission methods:
Voice Activation
The first and default mode is called "Voice Activation". In this mode Ventrilo will monitor your sound cards selected input device and when the signal strength reaches a certain level Ventrilo will start transmitting.
Push-to-Talk
The second mode is called "Push-to-Talk" or PTT for short. In this mode you transmit by holding down a specific key on your keyboard or button on your mouse. You can also define a button on a game controller if you like.
To change the transmit mode do the following:
The default is voice activation mode. If you would prefer PTT mode then check the option called "Use Push-To-Talk hotkey".
If you chose PTT mode then you must also determine what key / button to use in the
"Hotkey"
field.
Annoyances
Every program has its little quirks, and Ventrilo is no exception. The number one pet peeve of mine is listening to a new Ventrilo setup with the the dreaded
"Key Clicks"
left enabled. Lets fix that shall we? :)
In the Setup window uncheck the
"Play Key Clicks"
option. Otherwise people will constantly hear a short sound just before your actual voice comes across and it can appear to override part of what you're first saying, so people may have a hard time understanding you.
Additional Options
Ventrilo has many additional options that one may not be aware of. For example, if you would prefer to see the program in it's new ToolBar mode then simply right click in the main window, select View and then select ToolBar mode.
Do not be afraid to investigate all of the different options hidden in this right-click menu. You can use it to change the look of Ventrilo, to mute other users, to administrate the server (if you have Administrative Privileges of course) and more.
Conclusion
If you would like to know more about all of the different options on the Setup window then please click the Help button. The documentation is very extensive and should answer all of your questions about what each of these items does and what to watch out for.

What an interesting topic idea--really helpful. You may want to explain how the clicking when you cue in is annoying to users and how to set up private binds as well. Another suggestion I have is you try to use h2/h3 headers, using h3 for your smaller points (each step) then h2 for the big ones. Then you can use the tag and have a nice table of contents =)

Thanks for your feedback. I've adjusted the guide accordingly. If anyone has any additional suggestions I am open to listening to them.
Cheers,

Couple things from my opinions
Add information about
normalization
of users without having to individually modify the Volume of each user, perhaps even just noting
another external guide
as a reference. I use this method with similar settings and have never had to ask "why are you so quiet?" or cry in anguish as my eardrums explode after a first kill
For your screenshots, I personally prefer simply drawing red circles around the item being clicked, rather than an external arrow with repeated text in every pic. If you prefer the arrow, perhaps consider removing the "Now click here" in following screens as the user should
hopefully
realize (especially if they managed to access this guide) that the arrow means "click".
Again those are just things I would personally add, but this is a good tutorial for getting people set up for the first time :)
