Introduction - Every Guide Has One
Welcome to my rogue leveling guide! This is the first in my series of leveling guides that will eventually cover all specs and all classes. If you have any feedback, leave me a comment, as I'm always willing to improve.
Leveling a rogue may seem like an intimidating task. You hear all about stunlocking, "1+R/5S/4E", and all sorts of odd terms that apply to rogues. But fear not! After reading this guide you will have a much better understanding of how rogues work, and your life as a rogue will be made much easier. Now, let's move on to the part of the guide that matters, shall we?
Heirlooms - Level That Much Faster
Heirloom items provide a huge boost to your character. Between the bonus XP, the boosted stats (compared to most items you'll be receiving, very few can outdo an heirloom item), and the fact that they level with you, heirlooms are a huge time saver when leveling your character. As such, I'd recommend spending the time to get some of them (if not all of them) if you have a character that can efficiently earn large quantities of Justice or Honor Points. Here's what heirlooms you should be looking for:

for 2725. I'd recommend buying two of them, as getting 4% more health back when you kill things makes a huge difference.

: All specs. Bought from your local

for 3500. Ideally one would prefer a Thrown weapon for use of Fan of
刀扇
and

, but you don't get
刀扇
until 80 (when you stop using the bow due to it not leveling with you any more), and
致命投掷
has little use while leveling. Also, there is no heirloom thrown weapon.
May be replaced with

, especially so if you play on a PvP realm, or intend on doing many Battlegrounds.

: All specs. Won from the

, and it's a great addition for any character.

The Basics - Weapons, Poisons, Rotations, All That Jazz
Please note that this is mostly based on PvE content, much of this changes in PvP.
Assassination-specced rogues focus on the use of debilitating poisons and daggers to kill their enemies. Their weapons of choice are a slow, high-damage dagger in their main hand and a fast off-hand dagger(

in your offhand for you heirloom users]). This is because most abilities use only the main hand weapon for damage purposes (such as

being the exception. You use a faster off-hand for more frequent poison application, resulting in more damage done.
Poisons
You will want to use

on both of your weapons until you reach level 54. Then, you want to have

on your off-hand. The reasoning behind this is because

has its damage determined by the number of stacks of

on your target.
Rotation
Ideally, you will want to start out in

if it's not up (level 22 onward)

if it's not up

Combat rogues focus on standing toe-to-toe with their enemies. Think of a swashbuckler of some sorts. Due to their main abilities not requiring use of a dagger, a combat rogue usually wears a slow, high-damage axe,
mace
, or
sword
in their main hand. This is because all of your combo point-building abilities as Combat spec are based off of your main-hand weapon damage. They use a fast off-hand (usually a
dagger
) due to the free energy provided by

and to apply poisons faster.
Poisons
From level 10 to level 31, you will want to use

on both hands. From level 32 onward, you'll want to use dual

. This is because Wound Poison procs more often despite the lower damage, resulting in more damage done overall.
Rotation
As Combat,

ing is usually a waste of time. You'll only be using it for bypassing mobs or players that you don't want to fight, as there are no mechanics that make
潜行
(or moves that require
潜行
) worthwhile.

Subtlety is all about

. If one-shotting mobs with downtime in between is your thing, then you've come to the right place. You'll want to have a
slow dagger
in your main hand and a
fast dagger
in your off hand (notice the increased dagger damage on

and the dagger requirement of

).
Poisons
From level 10 to level 31, you will want to use

There's no game-changing talents or abilities, however mobs' health pools will increase a bit. That said, you'll likely have to

spam up to 5 combo points again and use a second

. Replace

as needed and try to keep them up. They'll make your life much easier after the initial burst.
Talents For The Talented Individual
Tabs labeled "PvE" are recommended to be used on a PvE realm/character, while tabs labeled "PvP" are recommended to be used on a PvP realm/character.
Major and Minor glyphs are up to your preference, the ones I added in the talent trees may not be optimal for you, so feel free to switch them up dependant on your individual needs.
Please note that
is not taken due to the positioning requirements of Backstab. If you're primarily running dungeons, feel free to drop points out of
to take it. You'll also want to swap the Slice and Dice glyph for the Backstab glyph.

While the builds every 10 levels is helpful to see, I'd find it much more helpful to know the order for putting points in.
For instance, on the
Assassination PVE
build up to level 15, should I use my first two points to fill
Deadly Momentum
first, or put 1 in each
Deadly Momentum
and
Lethality
, or fill up
Lethality
?
This may not be a big deal going from 10 to 15, but since the rest of your builds are 10 levels apart, it seems pretty important for them if someone's going to use this guide exclusively to help level their rogue.

Good work, though I do have one anecdotal critique:
I've resumed leveling a rogue that I abandoned about 3 years ago. I've been using the same tactics that were "the standard" for combat leveling back then:
Stealth up to target
Use Cheap Shot (Gives 2 CP and doesn't require special positioning)
Pop Slice N Dice (2 CP will let it last more than long enough for 1 mob)
Spam Sinister Strike until the mob is dead or you have 5 CP.
9 times out of 10, the mob will be dead after only 2 or 3 SS's, so I just use Recuperate after it dies. Recuperate would have made rogue leveling so much nicer back in TBC.

I think my rotation would fit better for Sublety PVP
(Shadowstep) > Ambush > Hemorrhage > Kidney shot > Shadowdance > Ambush > Ambush > Eviscerate > Hemorrhage
And so spam Hemorrhage to 5 CP then Eviscerate

Hi Guy and Gals,
So I thought it would be useful to have a leveling guide for people with no gold or heirlooms,
for some it's just a first step into the huge and overwhelming World of WarCraft, and for some it could be a fun way to reminisce vanilla and that hard mod feeling of leveling for the first time.
So I'm leveling a Rogue from 1-100 and hope to be done in time for Legion!
