The term "emote" means to express emotion. Using in game emotes are used to convey moods & observable actions. Emotes are slash commands that generate a chat message (default color orange) and are often accompanied by audio and some character action. The opposing faction can also see your default emotes but for your custom emotes all they will see is : <your name> makes some strange gestures.
Due to the overwhelming number of emotes I'm dividing my guide into 4 bite size guides. The highlighted guide is the one we're looking at today:-
Happy, Polite, Friendly & Affectionate Emotes.
Neutral, Unhappy & Despondent Emotes.
Taunts, Hostile & Combat Emotes.
Reactions, Miscellaneous & Custom Emotes
.
Two possible emote outcomes & targeting.
In the tabs below I have listed two possible outcomes for the one emote. There is the 'first person' emote (displayed on the first line) and then the 'second person' or 'emote interaction' result (displayed on the second line.) If you have not targeted a player the first line will be the outcome, if you do target someone (may it be player, NPC, pet or companion) the second line will be the outcome. With regards to targeting someone/thing, for default emotes, all you need to do is either click on the target or type /tar <insert target's name here> then you proceed with the slash command default emote. With custom emotes it's not as simple as just targeting someone as there is no pre-set first person or pre-set second person option so you will need to include the target's name in your crafted emote in order for it to make sense. A easy way to do this is to target the person and then type %t, %t's %ts into your custom emote where you wish the target's name to be.
e.g I have seen my friend DemonicYoshi across the other side of the AH so I target them, then I type:
/e feels %t's toasted cheese sandwich is nothing more than a tease.
Slugbuckets feels DemonicYoshi's toasted cheese sandwich is nothing more than a tease.
If interest I go into detail on crafting custom emotes on the very last tab on the very last guide.
Reactions, Miscellaneous & Custom Emotes.
In my last guide we looked at the aggressive angry emotes, now it's time to look at what's left for us to use as well as how to craft your own emotes. The following is a list of default emotes that can be used in the game. The first two tabs of emotes are viewable by the opposing faction and some emotes share the same result/outcome, the opposing faction will not be able to read your custom emotes.
I hope you enjoy this guide

If the 250+ default emotes are still not enough for you, you can always create your own! Unlike default emotes the opposing faction will not be able to read the details of your custom emotes, instead they see a generic emote
<your name> makes some strange gestures.
You can create your own emotes by starting the emote using the slash command
/e, /em & /me.
/e, /em & /me always starts the emote with your name just like the default emotes.
For example if I was on a toon called Slugbuckets & I typed:
/e stubbed her toe.
It will appear like this:
Slugbuckets stubbed her toe.
IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER
If you are going to start crafting your own emotes instead of using the default options there are some very important things to remember.
Emotes express moods & observable actions.... only
The most important thing to remember about an emote is it conveys something that can be perceived in some manner may it be a mood or observable action. What I mean by 'observable' is that the players around you need to be able to witness it.
For example:
/e takes a sip out of her delicious hot chocolate.
Slugbuckets takes a sip out of her delicious hot chocolate.
How do we know it's delicious? An emote shouldn't reveal more than a mood or observable action, the sipping is an observable action but the hot chocolate being delicious is not. A better way of emoting a delicious hot chocolate would be:
/e sips her hot chocolate with a sigh and smile.
Slugbuckets sips her hot chocolate with a sigh and smile.
If what you're throwing into /e is not expressing a mood or an observable action then you need to think of other ways you can say what you wish to express.
Emotes are not for chat conversations
Don't fall into the trap and combine both your emotes with your chat text.
Example:
/e smells her freshly baked bread. Who wants some?
Slugbuckets smells her freshly baked bread. Who wants some?
If you truly wish to emote smelling the bread then offering it you need to use both emote and chat commands.
Example:
/e smells her freshly baked bread.
/s Who would like a taste?
Slugbuckets smells her freshly baked bread.
Who would like a taste?
Emotes do not have the mystic powers of mind reading.
Emotes shouldn't reveal what you're thinking. You can always suggest that you have something on your mind by using suggestive emotes like
/sigh, /gaze or /e creases her brow or /e bites his lip
but unless you have a mary-sue that allows others full access to your thoughts, you need to find creative ways to get players to get you to open up and talk about what's on your mind.
Examples of mind reading emotes include:
/e thinks she should clean the litter box.
/e wonders what it would taste like.
/e wishes someone would take her to the hospital.
/e dreams of being put out of her misery.
Emotes are short.
If you have lots to say don't put it into an emote. Too many times do I see stories written in emotes.
Example:
/e is so bored that she looks around and decides to cause some mischief in the Auction house by reaching into her backpack and pulling out two gold which she then throws on the floor and screams FREE GOLD.
Slugbuckets is so bored that she looks around and decides to cause some mischief in the Auction house by reaching into her backpack and pulling out two gold which she then throws on the floor and screams FREE GOLD.
It's just too long and full of junk. If you want to create mischief and disrupt the Auction house you don't want to write a story about it, you want to DO it. Instead it can be emoted this way.
Example:
/e throws 2 gold on the ground.
/y Free Gold!
Slugbuckets throws 2 gold on the ground.
Free Gold!
It's short, it's an emote. The above example leads me to the next important thing to remember.
Don't emote your location
Going back to the example above. If you're standing in the Auction house there is no need to emote that you're standing in the Auction house.
Other examples include:
/e loves everyone in Silvermoon today.
/e is enjoying Dalaran's sunshine.
Watch the wording of your emotes
Misplaced words, incorrect punctuations and even using the wrong words can cause great confusion to other players. Say I want to emote putting some lollies on a plate for guests to eat. Where I'm from lollies are goodies or treats.
/e puts out the goodies.
Slugbuckets puts out the goodies.
The wording of this isn't the best it could be. To another player the above emote could mean something entirely different. I know what I was trying to emote but other players can't read my mind so may read it differently. We need to watch our words and be more specific.
/e places some lollies on a plate.
Slugbuckets places some lollies on a plate.
That is the proper way to word the emote.
Avoid god-emoting
"god-emoting" or "power emoting" are one way emotes that don't give the other player any room to react to the emote.
Example:
/e cuts %t's tongue out.
Slugbuckets cuts DemonicYoshi's tongue out.
Firstly poor Yoshi but more importantly what can Yoshi honestly do now? Nothing! If you're RPing you need to allow the other player to react to something that is done to them.
/e attempts to cut %t's tongue out
Slugbuckets attempts to cut DemonicYoshi's tongue out.
That is a better way to emote as it allows the player to react to your action.
One way emotes might not look dangerous but to a RPer they're brutal. If you RP with a seasoned hardcore RPer and you go and cut their tongue out the victim will be forced to lead the rest of his life as a mute (tongue reattachments is often too mary-sue for them.) Most will bin the character (wasting years worth of character building) in these situations and re-roll. Even if you wish to cause great harm to a RPer at least give them the chance to react.
Examples of other god-emotes
/e kills %t
/e shoots %t dead
/e rips %t's arms off
%t = targeting player's name
The only other important thing to remember is how to target players. With custom emotes it's not as simple as the default emotes where you just tab another player to include them into your emote. Instead you will need to do is type %t, %t's %ts into your custom emote where you wish the player's name to be.
Example:
/e sneezes over %t.
Slugbuckets sneezes over DemonicYoshi
/e lovingly strokes %t's pile of money.
Slugbuckets lovingly strokes DemonicYoshi's pile of money.
If you have a favourite you can always save them in a macro button to reuse. I personally RP toons that suffer from motion sickness. Every time I'm on public transport (boat/zep/tram etc) I use my motion sick macros along with my /s & spells. :D
I hope you have fun creating your new emotes.
If I have missed any emotes please let me know via reply and I'll try and keep the guides up to date.
Thank you so much for reading my emote guides!

5/5 - Succint, aesthetically pleasing, and very informative!
A couple things I would suggest:
-Fix one or two typos (traget=target in last tab),
-Move the "%t" variable explanation from its current position in the bottom of the last tab to somewhere more noticable, perhaps in a tab of its own. It's a very useful bit of information. You use it a few times before it is even explained, which could be quite confusing to new readers.
-Denoting which emotes loop would be beneficial. That is, mark or duplicate into a separate tab the ongoing emotes (dance, sit, lie, to the less-known ones: /fear).
Cheers!

I left some minor comments on the separate parts, and I want to stress this again; DON'T TAKE THEM AS CRITIZISM! I love this guide, and I especially fell in love with your small gnome pictures.
Great job! o3o

Thank you for the guide(s)! Whilst I'm not particularly a role player, I do occasionally have a little fun with emotes. I had accidentally stumbled upon some of these. It's nice to have a comprehensive list.
%t = targeting player's name
Not that it's a really important aside, as it does exactly the same thing. However,
%n
also uses the name of your target in an emote.
I would be interested to know what the difference in the two is, as well as what other var codes there are in game. So far I've seen %n, %t and %s.

If you have lots to say don't put it into an emote. Too many times do I see stories written in emotes.
BTW, your advice about not making emote long is...kinda useless when you use them for RP. Two things to say here
1. There is literally an addon that let's you bypass the character limit for wow mostly used by RPers...who am I kidding, ONLY used by RPers, because the character limit it so long for wow, it doesn't matter unless your trying to tell a small story of how you beat someone into the ground after you crit rolled is kinda the joy of rp.
2.As RPer's, you basically ARE writing a
SMALL
stroy inside your emotes. Also, hence the name "Para-Rpers, since you basically can do like two paragaphs....though, if your DMing an event...don't be a para-rper...well, you can, just don't RAID WARNING IT because it's spammy...really...reallly spammy.

Lets not forget the famous Pickpocket emote.
/run xx = math.floor(math.random()*99);
/run yy = math.floor(math.random()*99);
/run SendChatMessage("picks your pocket for "..xx.." gold,"..yy.."silver.","EMOTE");
