-Introduction
Heya! My name is Eve! I'm the WORLD'S FIRST OWNER of the FAMILY BRAWLER TABARD and I'm here to help you get the prestigious
Master Trainer's Tabard
. I'm an avid pet battler with over 10,000 pvp wins. So not only do I have an idea of what makes a good team, but I also know how they'll do against the Meta Comps everyone spams.
To obtain this Tabard you must unlock
Family Brawler
which requires you to win ten battles with 3 pets of the same family for all ten families. Aquatic, Beast, Critter, Dragonkin, Elemental, Flying, Humanoid, Magic, Mechanical and Undead.
For this guide I'm going to prioritize outlining simple strategies and offering a roster of pets that can do the job for each respective family. I will do my best to include easily obtainable pets for people who don't really want to shell out thousands of gold for the more difficult expensive pets, but will include them for those who don't mind/already have a great roster.
P.S if you're strapped for cash you could always buy one of the best pets at level 1, level it to 25, complete the achievement and sell it back
$$most times at a profit!$$
Some things you should know before starting:
#1 - You're going to lose sometimes... Several of these families are simply not competitive when restricted to their own family. You can make fun teams that perform well, but they WILL get rolled by the meta. Go in knowing you're going to lose. Take breaks and don't get upset or discouraged!
#2 - If you can, do this during the
Pet Battle Event.
Why? Because the Pet Battle Event brings in newer players that you can capitalize on and heavily rewards you for winning battles (per toon) if you can pick up the quest
The Very Best
. When I did this I had twenty toons at level 100 or higher so I did the quest 20 times and got x20
Ultimate Battle-Training Stone
which is a nice bonus if you're going to grind this Tabard anyway! If you're an altaholic, you'll be swimming in stones! If you're not... Well I think trials work though don't quote me on that.
#3 - Know when you're beat. You're going to have sub-optimal pets going against potential meta comps that will beat you or worse (now that others are competing for this achievement) a team that directly counters yours (Example: your Beast team is matched against a Mechanical team). Save yourself the time and simply forfeit. That time wasted could be used on a battle you CAN win.
-Creating a Team
So I understand some of you won't have certain pets or will just want to do this with what you have. This can be ill-advised for those with less than 100 pets at MAX level, but if you're feeling confident take your best shot and come back if you're having trouble. If nothing else here's a general checklist to building an effective team with whatever you have.
Have at least one weather changing ability
Seriously, a lot of teams (like Sunlight, Darkness or Arcane Storm) rely heavily on that weather condition being active. Being able to change it can destroy the opponent's synergy and overall effectiveness.
Avoid having too many of the same type moves*
You're already limited to a single family. Don't make it more difficult by limiting yourself to a single attack type. It's just going to result in you digging yourself into a hole when your Aquatic only team gets paired against a Magic team. Try to diversify your moverset.
Example: Leopard Tree Frog
Water Jet - Tongue Lash
Healing Wave - Cleansing Rain
Frogkiss - Swarm of Flies
If your Frog is fast (S/S or 325 speed) use Tongue Lash/Cleansing Rain/Frogkiss
If your Frog is slow (less than 290 speed) use Water Jet/Cleansing Rain/Swarm of Flies
Both ways you're ensuring you have a strong move for Undeads and Elementals where as if you chose Tongue Lash/Swarm of Flies or Water Jet/Frog Kiss you're leaving yourself vulnerable Humanoids and Magic pets respectively.
*Unless that's the point of your team -> Arcane Storm and Mana Surge for example.
Invest in some Heal/Buff/Build/Stall move
Sometimes you'll get paired against some rabbits or a team that uses stall moves (See:
Sons of the Flame
). This is where it's nice to have moves that don't do damage, but still help your team instead of wasting a turn.
The ultimate goal is to find some sort of synergy/niche for your team.
Be it weather based, combo based (Using a Damage-over-time move into Shattered Defences) or any other quirk, you need synergy. A team that each pet can hold it's own, a team that can't so easily be hard countered.
a team that works well together typically beats a team with 3 random pets with some hard hitting move and nothing else to offer.
Now that we have the basics down.
-Aquatic
Team I completed this with: Frog (S/S Speed 325) / Puddle Terror / Emperor Crab (P/P)
Advised Pets:
Puddle Terror Punch/Nature ward/Dive
Any Frog or Toad(S/S) Tongue Lash/Cleansing Rain/Frog Kiss (Speed is priority number one because all three moves benefit going first)
Puddle Terror is essentially Teroclaw Hatchling v1 (Teroclaw excels more so because Nature's ward allows it to maintain it's speed racial which helps it's other two moves.) Still a solid pet.
Emperor Crab Surge / Healing Wave / Shell Shield
One of the most common Aquatics around, Emperor Crab. speed doesn't matter on this king of the sea with surge (always goes first), combined with shell shield and heal on CD this crustacean can take a lickin' and keep on ticking thanks to shell shield and using healing wave on CD (maximixed on P/P breeds) and eats Teroclaw Hatchlings for breakfast. (Surge is super effective against Teroclaws in Nature's Ward and because you go first, you hit before they dodge AND Alpha Strike is weaker because you hit first.
Other mentions:
Snarly
Chuck
Emerald Turtle
Magical Crawdad
Left Shark
Hydraling
Slithershock Elver (S/S)
Spawn of G'nathus
Tottle
Tips:
-A lot of people think Aquatics are under powered and rarely do you see them in competitive play. However, they have many hard hitting moves such as pump and Blood in the Water and have one of the greatest synergies with weather. Cleansing Rain which I cannot recommend enough that you have at least one pet with this. It's an AoE heal, can hinder a weather based team and beefs up your aquatic moves (which you should have several of on an aquatic only team) by 25%!
-An added bonus, I had several undead comps just flee immediately when they saw my critters (undead does weak damage against aquatics and aquatics have strong critter moves)
-Beast
Team I completed this with: Alpine Fox (S/S)/Xu-Fu/Corgnelius
Advised Pets:
Any kind of Fox (S/S)Flurry/Crouch/Dazzling Dance
Xu-Fu Spirit Claws/Feed/Prowl
Corgnelius Bark/Superbark/Puppy Parade
Stunted Direhorn (Trihorn charge/Horn Attack/Trihorn Shield)
Direhorn Runt (Trihorn charge/Horn Attack/Trihorn Shield)
Pygmy Direhorn (Trihorn charge/Horn Attack/Trihorn Shield)
Other Mentions:
Ban-Fu
Feline Familiar
Scalded Basilisk Hatchling (H/S)
Zandalari Kneebiter
Zandalari Anklerender
Zandalari Footslasher
Summit Kid
Alterac Brew-Pup
Son of Skum
Grumpy
Argi
Tips:
-A big perk, like the critters is many beasts can be speed demons. Combine this with their Beast racial +25% damage when below 50% health and you can put out some serious damage.
-I recommend having Dazzling Dance on an S/S Fox. This allows you to bring along some heavy hitters while allowing them to go first against most pets.
-Critter
Team I completed this with: Rabbit(S/S)/Rabbit(S/S)/Frostfur Rat(P/P)
Advised Pets:
Rabbit/Bunny/Hare(Always S/S breed or 357 speed)
Moveset: Flurry / Dodge / Burrow (Speed is priority number one because all three moves benefit going first - cycle Dodge -> Flurry -> Burrow)
Frostfur/Blind Rat (Speed is preferred, but slow isn't bad)
Flurry(if faster than 310 speed)Sneak Attack(if slower than 310 speed)/Refuge/Call Darkness
Snail/Conch/Whelk (H/H) Absorb or Ooze Touch/Shell Shield/Dive(This pet offers some ways of dealing with elementals, flying and humanoids)
Other mentions:
Mr. Wiggles and Bush Chicken (for Clone dance - uncanny luck + cyclone)
Lovebird Hatchling
Crispin
Nuts
Armadillo Pup
Black Lamb
Pygamy Cow
Red Cricket
Tips:
-The greatest perk of critters besides their stun immunity is their speed and their priority based moves which synergize with going first (dodge, refuge, flurry, survival etc)
-The good news is Undeads are a popular choice so you get to counter them as long as you play smart.
-If you encounter a Teroclaw Hatchling just forfeit to save yourself some time. This pet can heal over 5 turns(while being it the backrow), dodge, outspeed you and deal strong damage. Your pets simply don't have the damage to deal with it. Trust me.
-Have at least one pet with an ability to change the weather(preferably Call Darkness). This is so you can deal with Sunlight Heal comps (which like above, you don't have the damage to deal with).
-Dragonkin
Team I completed this with: Spirit of Competition(wouldn't advise -> I just like using this pet)/Lil' Tarecgosa/Chrominius
Advised Pets:
Lil' Nefarian Shadowflame/Dragon's Call/Wing buffet
Twilight Clutch Sister Twilight Fire/Phase Shift/Twilight Meteorite
Emerald Proto-Whelp Breath/Emerald Presence/Emerald Dream
Lil' Tarecgosa Breath/Surge of Power/Arcane Storm
Nexus Whelpling (x3) (Tail Sweep/Mana Surge/Arcane Storm (see Tips for basic strategy)
Chrominius Bite/Howl/Surge of Power (Don't be a fool and try Howl->Surge of Power unless you're sure it'll connect, most will switch pets/use a dodge move)
Other Mentions:
Azure Whelp (S/S)
Bronze Whelping
Stormborne Whelpling
Spawn of Onyxia
Onyxian Whelpling
Infinite Hatchling
Dream Whelpling
Yu'la, Broodling of Yu'lon
Sprite Darter Hatchling
Nether Faerie Dragon
Tips:
-We've finally arrived at a team we can cheese/families that will be easier to complete. 3 Nexus Whelplings is a team that plays itself and will net you wins as long as your opponent can't change the weather.
-Use Arcane Storm, make sure the other pet can't change the weather if they can swap to another Nexus Whelpling and use Arcane Storm. If not use Mana Surge. Rinse and repeat use Tail Sweep whenever other moves are on cooldown.
-Time your heavy hitting moves when your Dragon passive is up +50% damage (it activates when you bring an enemy below 50% HP)
-Elemental
Team I completed this with: Nightshade Sproutling (S/S)/Molten Corgi/Stormstruck Beaver
Advised Pets:
Nightshade Sproutling (S/S or 325 speed) Lash/Call Darkness/Blinding Poison(Speed is key with this pet as all of these moves do better if they go first.) This hidden gem is underrated yet the S/S breed will sweep an entire mechanical team and win a 1 on 1 with almost every single pet it outspeeds.
Stormstruck Beaver Tail Slap/Lightning Shield/Discharge
Molten Corgi Bark/Superbark/Puppies of the Flame
Lil' Ragnaros Sulfuras Smash/Magma Trap/Sons of the Flame
Terrible Turnip Weakening Blow/Leech Seed/Sons of the Root
Broot/Blossoming Ancient Ironbark/Photosynthesis/Sunlight
Other mentions:
Pandaran Water/Earth/Air/Fire Spirit
Jademist Dancer
Droplet of Y'shaarj
Singing Sunflower Solarbeam//Photosynthesis/Sunlight
Stout Alemental
Skunky Alemental
Crazy Carrot
Ruby Droplet
Tips:
-An elemental's greatest strengths is it's ability to ignore most NEGATIVE weather effects (which is why I heavily advocate for a weather based team to take full advantage).
-One advantage to note is that of all the families the two that would give Elementals the most trouble are the LEAST played.
-Elementals do WEAK damage against Critters yet they barely exist in the meta
-Aquatics do strong damage against Elementals yet they're even rarer than Critters!
-Flying
Team I completed this with: Junglebeak (P/P)/Dread Hatchling/Stormwing(just because I like using her :P)
Advised Pets:
Northern Hawk Owl/Long-Eared Owl/Fledgeling Warden Owl Quills/Darkness/Nocturnal Strike
Dread Hatchling Shadow Talon/Darkness/NocturnalStrike
Crow/Raven Alpha Strike/Darkness/NocturnalStrike
Teroclaw Hatchling (A great pet if you don't want to go the Glass Cannon route -> Always open with Nature ward then dodge -> retreat when low health in Nature's ward is up) Alpha Strike/Dodge/Nature's Ward)
Moths Cocoon strike/Moth dust/Alpha strike
Stormwing Quills/Lightning Storm/Thunderbolt
Jungle/Blood/Axebeak (P/P) Peck/Rain Dance/Nocturnal Strike
Other Mentions:
Chi-Chi
Direbeak Hatchling
Bloodgazer Hatchling
Snowfeather Hatchling
Sharptalon Hatchling
Royal Peachick
Ji-kun Hatchling
Any Gryphon
Tips:
-Your biggest strength is your +%50 speed racial when you're above half of your health. Once you lose that, many pets can outspeed and kill you easily (Flyers typically have low health pools averaging 1300-1400 approximately) so drawn out matches should be avoided.
-The best way to handle Flying is a "Glass Cannon" approach. I advise a trio of Flyers that have Darkness and Nocturnal Strike. This will hard counter healing teams and puts out ridiculous damage.
-Humanoid
Team I completed this with: Anubisath Idol/Bonkers(S/S)/Horde Fanatic(or Alliance Enthusiast if you're Alliance)
Advised Pets:
Anubisath Crush/Sandstorm/Deflect is your tank, use him to destroy critters, dragonkin or any pet with the potential to AoE (Sandstorm will seriously hamper AoE (-74*3((hit on all three pets))=-222 reduced damage). On top of this you've got a huge health pool so you gain 69 hp per successful hit which is perfect with a way to weaken blows)Deflect for things like howlbombs/conflagurate(if burned)/Deep freeze/deflect when a Dragon has it's 50% buff etc.
Qiraj Guardling Crush/Sandstorm/Blackout Kick (same strategy as above)
Bonkers (S/S or 325 speed) Bite/Dodge/Tornado Punch (speed is important as Dodge going first ensures an extra invulnerable turn and if Tornado Punch procs it's stun the enemy doesn't get it's move off)
Horde Fanatic/Alliance Enthusiast Ban Hammer/Jar of Smelly Liquid/BURRRP!
Kunlai Runt Takedown/Frost Shock/Deep Freeze (open with Frost Shock into Deep Freeze then takedown)
Grumpling Punish/Frost Shock/Deep Freeze (same strategy as above)
Fiendish Imp (S/S or 333 speed) Burn/Immolation/Nether Gate
Murkalot (if you have this USE IT, ALWAYS LEAD WITH IT AND USE RIGHTEOUS INSPIRATION INTO A PET WITH A HEAVY HITTING MOVE)) Punish/Falling Murloc/Righteous Inspiration
Ore eater Acid Touch/Shell Armor/Bodyslam (always have shell armor up before you Bodyslam)
Other Mentions:
Wyrmy Tunkins
Harbinger of Flame
Flayer Youngling (S/S)
Father Winter's Helper
Curios Wolvar Pup
Tylarr Gronnden
Tips:
-A really nice move to invest in is Sandstorm as the humanoid racial gives you health every time you hit so unlike the Flying family a war of attrition will favor you. Sandstorm removes approximately 74 damage (depending on breed/pet) causing both sides to hit more equating to more health gained and seeing as all three of your pets will be humanoid they will all benefit.
-Undeads are likely going to be a common sight. Just be patient, Undead family aside, Humanoids are great pets.
-Magic
Team I completed this with: Eldritch Manafiend/Arcane Eye/Arcane Gorger
Advised Pets:
Arcane Eye: Psychic Blast/Drain Power/Mana Surge
Arcane Gorger/Mana Wyrmling Flurry/Drain Power/Mana Surge
Eldritch/Erudite Manafiend Arcane Explosion/Surge of Power/Arcane Storm
Servant of Demidos Magic Sword/Siphon Anima/Soul Rush
Nordrassil Wisp (S/S) Light/Flash/Soul Ward
Other Mentions:
Void Shardling
Jade Oozeling
Ethereal Soul-Trader
Minfernal
Brightpaw
Stardust
Twilightlight Fiendling
Trunks
Hyjal Wisp
Hungering Claw
Darkmoon eye
Empyreal Manafiend
Energized Manafiend
Empowered Manafiend
Font of Mana
Essence of Mana
Seed of Mana
Court Scribe
Void Shardling
Bright Paw
Mini Mindslayer
Shimmering Wyrmling
Untethered Wyrmling/Mana Wyrmling
Elekk Plushie (x3)
Tips:
-The main strategy is roughly the same as the Dragonkin cheesing method (Arcane Storm into Mana Surge), but Nexus Whelpling does this without requiring changes. So Eldritch/Erudite/Empyreal/Energized/Empowered Manafiend/Font of Mana/Essence of Mana/Seed of Mana/Court Scribe/Void Shardling/Bright Paw any of these with Arcane Storm then swap into Mini Mindslayer/Shimmering Wyrmling/ Untethered Wyrmling/Mana Wyrmling/ Arcane Gorger/ Arcane Eye and spam mana surge.
-Magic doesn't have a great racial (can't be hit for more than 35% of it's max health), so beyond the peace of mind that you can't get one shotted, just remember you really don't need to worry about swapping out if someone uses Howl.
-Another strategy is going the Aquatic route and utilizing Starfall/Moonfire to boost your Magic abilities (only 10%+ not 25% like Aquatics though) Trunks, Stardust, Harmonious Porcupette and Celestial Calf all have one or the other.
-Mechanical
Team I completed this with: Clockwork Gnome/Mechanical Pandaren Dragonling/Tranquil Mechanical Yeti
Advised Pets:
Clockwork Gnome Railgun/Blitz/Build Turret
Tranquil Mechanical Yeti Thrash/Call Lightning/Ion Cannon
Mechanical Pandaren Dragonling: Breath/Thunderbolt/Decoy (Literally three of these is an easy way to cheese this)
Iron Starlette Wind-up/Powerball/Supercharge (Wind-up+Supercharge+Wind-up= 1-shot KO BUT if an opponent is smart they will try to stun/block this)
Lil' Bling Inflation/Extra Plating/Make it Rain
Other mentions:
Cogblade Raptor
Darkmoon Tonk
Darkmoon Zepplin
Ancient Nest Guardian
Fluxfire Feline
Personal World Destroyer
Lifelike Mechanical Frostboar
Clockwork Rocket Bot
Son of Animus
Sky-bo
Tips:
-You're not going to have much trouble with such powerful options combined with the mechanical's amazing racial to revive.
-My advice is just be wary of elementals (not only do they do strong damage against you, your mechanical moves are weak against them!)
-Undead
Team I completed this with: Unborn Val'kyr(H/H)/Bone Serpent(H/H)/Fossilized Hatchling
Advised Pets:
Unborn Val'kyr (H/H) Shadow Shock/Curse of Doom/Haunt
Fossilized Hatchling Claw/Death and Decay/Bonestorm
Wicked Soul (S/S) Shadow Shock/Haunting Song/Haunt
Ghastly Kid Hoof/Ethereal/Haunt
Weebonimination Cleave/Consume Corpse/Haymaker (or corpse explosion)
Graves Skull Toss/Grave Destruction/Consume Corpse
(Fun strategy: You can really abuse consume corpse. Simply haunt on one pet, switch to a pet with consume corpse and before haunt expires use consume corpse. Then switch to your haunting pet when the move cools down and rinse and repeat - not the best to pair with Bone Serpent's Darkness as it halves the healing).
Bone Serpent (H/H) (x3) Bone Barrage/Call Darkness/Nocturnal Strike
Other mentions:
Blight Hawk
Blightbreath
Scourged Whelpling
Ghastly Rat
Ghostly Skull
Frostwolf Ghostpup
Creepy Crate
Mr. Biggleworth
Son of Seethe
Fragment of Anger
Fragment of Desire
Fragment of Agony
(Seriously, any undead pet is pretty well viable)
Tips:
-This will be one of the easiest achievements to cheese. Whether it's 3 Bone Serpents, A Haunt/Consume Corpse Comp or just any 3 undeads listed above you slap together will likely win you this eventually.
-Be sure to use your strongest move in your revived state (Damned) as you will die at the end of your turn regardless.
-Conclusion
The difficulty of this achievement will vary based how many pets you have, your knowledge in PvP battles, what kind of team/player you are matched with and a plethora of other factors. While this may take more time for some, it's completely achievable. You can't lose progress and there's no time limit so as long as you remain committed you'll eventually succeed.
If you have any questions feel free to comment here and I will do my best to help!
You can also contact me in game. My Battle.net tag is Eve#1598
I'd also like to ask for your help!
Currently, this guide is a work in progress. I plan to hyperlink the pets for easier navigation and include more movesets/strategies in the future(I'm so busy working 60 hour weeks that if I wait until this is complete I'll miss the upcoming Pet Battle event), but I figured some may appreciate any sort of guide as none really exist that I could find outside of "I used these 3 pets for x family".
Please let me know if there is anything you think I should include or do. (Pets, strategies, miscellaneous)
-Acknowledgements
I'd like to dedicate this guide to the Pet Battle Forums. They're a great community who are always happy to help new players and I highly recommend checking them out if you have any questions about anything pet related.
Pet Battles - World of Warcraft Forums
It is their kindness that inspired me to create this and even though many great friends have left there (as well as myself) I just wanted to give back for all the love and fun times we all had.
I'd like to thank Blizzard for including this achievement. I've been begging for this on the WoW Pet Battle Forums (more so) and WarcraftPets forums for years.
WarcraftPets: More pvp pet achieves please!
This is a great addition. One that I believe offers some spontaneity in incentivizing people to run other teams besides the meta and be creative. I hope to see more PvP based achievements in the future!
Finally, thank you all for reading my guide! I hope it helped if even a little.

"Artic Fox (S/S)/Xu-Fu/Corgilicious"
Do you mean the Arctic Fox Kit? But where do you find an S/S of those? Or did you mean Alpine Foxling?
Also, just to clear confusion, is Corgilicious meant to imply we can use Corgi Pup or Corgnelius here? They have the same moveset but different breeds.

Edit: replaced sarcastic comment generated by something like 75 games to obtain 10 wins with a certain family. That was an exception, the ratio is about 1 win every 3-4 games usually.

Well I did try to pick some of the advised pets, namely the Elekk Plushie (x3) team under the Magic category, but so far I'm not really satisfied with my win ratio. I'll report back after some more battles.

If a player has Murkalot, which of the team should they swap out in order to use him? I'm inferring that the Idol stays no matter what, so swap Bonkers or the PvP pet?

the guide is ok but its missing more strats. Only having the pets mentioned doesnt automatically say what to do with them. Would be great if you could pick the highlights of each combo and which abilities are key.

For anyone who is struggling with the

, I can recommend one change to the team mentioned in this article. Instead of using Puddle Terror try and get your hands on a
寄居蟹
. Don't be misled by the B/B displayed on Wowhead currently, this guy is an 'over-statted' speed demon with a move set to abuse it! On live currently my rare Hermit Crab has stats of 1400 health, 284 power and 349 speed. Combine those stats with a 1-1-1 move set and he can easily carry the team. Hope this tip manages to help at least one person!

Patch 8.3 - May 2020 - Experience doing this achievement and using this guide.
Even not being updated for BFA pets, this guide is still excellent to help build you setups for this achievement. I did this in about one week (a non pet battle bonus week) and because you face the same people so many times I highly recommend rotating families as you go. If you keep queueing against someone that your team just doesn't match up well against just swap up families. Another thing, even if you think you are going to get steamrolled go through the whole pet battle a few times against the player. A lot of players use very set patterns so even with a weaker team you can outplay them and win with inferior setups. The biggest struggle for me was dragonkin for sure the easiest was humanoid. On average I would say queue times were 2-5 minutes. Really early in the morning it could be upwards of 10. Any who, after using this guide as a framework I just changed a few pets when I thought it would help against certain setups and it still holds up very well. The biggest thing going into this is just understand you are going to lose... a lot. You are almost always going to be going up against metas. Just keep chipping away at it. When you see a player adjust their setup because you are using a certain family, just rotate to another family. Good luck pet brawlers and thank you for the excellent guide Eve.
