Ce guide est également disponible en français :
World of Warcraft : Le guide du débutant !
IMPORTANT : I am French, so English is not my main language, so I try to write as well as possible in this language, which is not always obvious for me. I get a lot of remarks about syntax and grammar, so I apologize if some phrases are incomprehensible or wrong. Good reading ;)
Hello and welcome to my World of Warcraft Beginners' guide 3.0!
Together we will see a lot of things about World of Warcraft. I will explain you the basics of the game, the different options, the entire interface... in short, all you need to know to start this wonderful game :D
This guide is made for beginners and players back in the game after many years, so I won't spend a lot of time on high level content.
Many other guides will explain the different features available at max level, you can read them on wowhead for exemple.
I hope you'll enjoy my guide, and I wish you a lot of fun discovering Azeroth! :D
What is World of Warcraft ?
World of Warcraft, abbreviated WoW, is a multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). You can embody different characters each with the ability to use various powers and varied.
You live in the fantastic world of Azeroth, a planet filled with monsters, magic and secrets.
Two factions oppose: the Horde and the Alliance. For centuries, these factions fought fiercely to extend their rule over Azeroth.
Join a faction, choose your race and class, and fight alongside the mighty leaders of the Horde or the Alliance!
Released in 2004, the game is developed by Blizzard Entertainment, and currently has 9 expansions:
Burning Crusade (2007)
Wrath of the Lich King (2008)
Cataclysm (2010)
Mists of Pandaria (2012)
Warlords of Draenor (2014)
Legion (2016)
Battle for Azeroth (2018)
Shadowlands (2020)
Dragonflight (2022)
Each extension is accompanied by several content patches that come out during these two years of interval.
World of Wacraft offers a rich and varied content: thousands of quests, a hundred dungeons and raids, a hundred zones to explore, player vs player, and even pets battles!
Do not worry, you will gradually get used to the game, even if all this content may seem impressive at first glance ^^
Before playing
Create an account and download the game
Before starting your adventure, you must create an account and download this famous game :p
Create an account here
Download the client here
When creating an account, Blizzard will ask you all the usual information.
You can also register via Facebook or Google.
By accessing any Blizzard site and logging in to it, you will be able to access your account settings, such as to purchase extensions or play time for World of Warcraft.
After downloading the launcher and having entered your credentials, you will be able if it is not already done, choose a Battletag. This is the name that will appear in the list of friends of your contacts. However it will not appear in game on World of Warcraft, because you can choose a different name for each of your characters. The battletag can only be changed once, so be careful!
All this done, you will be able to install WoW (or other games) by clicking "install". That's it!
And if like me you do not have the fiber, I advise you to start the download at night, because there is now more than 60GB of data to download (it's long ...)
Expansions and subscription
The previous part explained to you how to download the game. Now you have to take out the credit card :p
First of all, know that you can play for free up to level 10, with as many characters as you want.
Do not hesitate to abuse this limit to up several characters, in order to get used to the game and to know which class you like the most.
Afterwards, you will need two things: a subscription and the latest expansion, Dragonflight.
Buying a subscription alone grants you access to everything from Vanilla to Shadowlands, which is already huge content!
And if you like the game, you can acquire Dragonflight!
The subscription will cost you around 13€ per month or 11€ per month if you take the 6 months subscription.
Dragonflight costs between 50 euros for the basic edition and 90 euros for the epic edition, which contains many in-game bonuses as well as a character boost (we'll talk about this later).
Game versions and licenses
This can be confusing for a new player, so I'll try to be clear on this point!
There are currently several versions of World of Warcraft:
The "normal" version, called "retail", which is actually the latest updated version of the game, the one that regularly receives new expansions over the years.
The "Classic" versions, which are special versions based on previous WoW expansions.
These versions should be considered as completely different and distinct games from each other: they don't share the same servers, they do not have the same content, and your progress is not saved from one version to another.
The "Classic" versions allow you to revisit WoW Vanilla (the 2004 game), as well as the Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King expansions as they were back then. But don't panic, all the content of these extensions is of course also available on the "retail" version of the game :)
And be careful, it's not over! There are also so-called "gaming licenses". You can create several licenses on a single battle.net account. These licenses will automatically be named "wow 1", "wow 2", "wow 3"... when they are created.
These licenses have nothing to do with the "game versions" as seen above, they are simply different sub-accounts allowing you to access the retail version of the game.
Each license is independent, which means that you will have to pay for a subscription and the extensions if you wish to have several ones.
The recruit-a-friend program
A program called "recruit-a-friend" is available to you: all you need to do is find a recruiter who will provide you with in-game benefits.
Your recruiter will help you start your adventure, and there are many ways you can interact with each other. Level donation, XP bonus, in-game bonus... having a recruiter is great!
In order to participate in this program, your recruiter must go into the game and open the "social" tab then go to the "recruit-a-friend" tab. Give him the email address you use on your battle.net account so that he can send you an invitation.
This done, your accounts will be linked and you will be able to enjoy many advantages in the game!
Common advantages:
Can summon your partner wherever he is every 30 minutes
Gain of 30% of experience when the partner is grouped
Advantages for the recruiter:
The recruiter will receive a reward for each subscription month purchased by the recruit, ranging from free month to pure cosmetics.
Some restrictions and particularities:
Only accounts that are less than 7 days old OR that have not received a subscription for at least 2 years are eligible.
You can generate one link per month, which can be used by 4 different recruits.
Owning Shadowlands is not mandatory, neither for the recruiter nor for the recruit.
Being a recruiter does not prevent you from being the recruit of another player.
Welcome in game !
Choose a realm
Finally ! Your game is installed! After long hours of waiting, you are now in the game! Accept the terms of use after having carefully read them (just kidding, who reads the terms of use?), You are now on a page for selecting your server!
The choice of server is very important, be careful to choose the right one when creating your character!
You don't have to be on the same server as your friends to play with them, but if you want to be able to belong to the same guild or trade with them, this will only be possible if you are from the same server!
Auction houses are also server-specific, so this impacts the economy of the game.
The server's "population" is the number of players currently logged into the realm. The mention of "full" means that you will have to wait for a place to become available in order to be able to access the game (this case is however quite rare).
Choose a race and a class
Now is the time to choose your race and class! First of all, don't make your choice based on "what is strong" or "what is the best composition". No. Play whatever race and class you like the most :)
In Azeroth, two factions oppose each other: the noble Alliance and the formidable Horde ! Each of these factions is made up of different playable races, and each race has access to certain classes.
In WoW, it's the classes that make up your entire gameplay, the races having little importance for a beginner player :)
Here is a small table listing the different races in the game:
Alliance Races
Alliance Allied Races
Horde Races
Horde Allied Races

* Allied races are somewhat special races that you will need to unlock with a character level 50 or higher.
Once you have chosen the right breed for you, you need to choose your class!
The classes are 12 in number:
战士
圣骑士
猎人
潜行者
牧师
死亡骑士
萨满祭司
法师
术士
武僧
德鲁伊
恶魔猎手
唤魔师
Each of these classes is unique and offers a very different gameplay from each other. Some fight melee, others from a distance, some can heal your allies, others protect them...
Each class has 3 specializations (except the Druid who has 4 and the Demon Hunter who has 2). Each specialization belongs to one of the following 3 roles: Damages , Tank or Healer .
damages role, or "DPS role", is reserved for those who like the fight. Your goal is to cast spells or hit enemies with your weapons in order to kill them as quickly as possible.
Tank role is there for you to protect your allies. Your goal is to attract all enemies to you and protect your allies.
Healer role is intended for "pacifists" who prefer to heal the wounds of their allies.
Of course, it is possible to progress alone with a role of tank or healer. You will kill enemies slower but have much better survival.
Here is a small table indicating which roles are available for each of the classes:

Customize your character
This done, now comes the time for personalization!
You have a large number of choices to customize your character: skin colors, hairstyles, tattoos, eye color, posture, ornaments...
You can even create a character in your image! Well, in this case, better not to create an undead...
And finally, you have to give your character a name! Little advice, the worst name we can give to a character is your real first name + gamer, in the genre we have nathangamer .. please give me a rename :(
Note that you can fully customize your character in the future by going to the hairdresser in capital cities!
Homepage, last step!
Congratulations, your character is ready! You are now on the home page of your server! It will look like this when you have multiple characters:
Here is the meaning of the different elements that make up this image:
Top left, the game version
Below, messages from Blizzard concerning possible updates or maintenance of the servers
Still below, 3 nice buttons: the first will take you to a cosmetics store, the second concerns addons (we will come back to this later), and the last allows you, among other things, to consult certain cinematics, to adjust your parameters or quit the game.
On the other side, we have the list of your characters with some interesting information: their name, their class, their level, and where you last logged out.
Next to this list, you can see a gray logo: it is a sesame (if you have one of course).
And for the "back", "delete character" and "enter game" buttons, I think they speak for themselves :)
Explanation about the character boost token
What is that token?
The token is a very special object! With a value of 60 €, it will allow you to instantly raise a character to 110!
When to use it?
The token can be used anytime and on any character (except demon hunter).
However, I advise you if you are new to NOT using it, and discover the game with a character from level 1 to level 120. If you use it from the beginning, you will be very likely to be lost, and in a world like WoW, it's not very nice ^^
Your first steps into Azeroth
Controls
Welcome to Azeroth friends! Good at first glance, the game seems relatively complex, there are buttons everywhere and an interface ultra developed. But do not worry, following this guide, you will master everything;) You can find all the controls and the keys assigned to them in the parameters (esc -> interface -> shortcuts), but here are the default ones:
Move
: arrows or W A S D
Jump
: spacebar
Use spells
: left click on the icons or 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 ) =. I strongly advise keyboard shortcuts, only very few players play "mouseclick". Some people do it, for others like me it's a bad habit that we try to lose :p
Unsheathe
: Z
Sit
: X
Open all the bags
: B
Open the tchat
: enter
Focus an ennemy
: tabulation
Zoom
: Mouse wheel
Change the angle of view of the camera
: left click then move the mouse
Change the angle of view of the camera and turn
: right click then move the mouse
Open the settings
: ESC
Game interface
At first glance, the interface looks very complex and detailed. Not easy to navigate with all these buttons ;)
The interface is divided into 3 main parts: the player's portrait at the top left, the spell bar and toolbar at the bottom, and the mini-map at the top right.
Player’s portrait :
By right-clicking on your portrait, you will see a whole list of options available to you:
The spell bar and toolbar:
At the bottom of the screen, you have a huge bar filled with interesting stuff :p
On the left, we have the spells, which are unlocked as your adventure progresses. To place spells, take them with a left click in the spellbook (K) and place them as you see fit. To move spells, unlock your spell bar by going to settings, "interface" then "action bars".
And finally on the right we have the toolbar. Here's a detailed look at how each of these tools works:
Image 1:
In this tab, you can find your character, his equipment as well as his detailed statistics. Item level is the average of the item levels for each piece of your gear. In the two other sub-tabs, you can find your titles for the first, and create sets of equipment in the second.
Image 2:
Here are classified all your reputations. You can choose to track a reputation (so that it appears under your experience bar) or to put it in a separate category.
Image 3
Finally, you can find all your currencies in this tab. They are classified by extension or by functionality. You can choose to track 3 different currencies, which will appear next to your gold when you open your bag.
Image 1:
In this tab, you have access to all your class spells as well as your general spells (racial, PvP trinket, guild passives, etc.).
Image 2:
Finally, here is the trades tab. You have a brief overview of your professions, but you can click on the icons to have full access to your professions (recipes, preparations, etc.)
Image 1:
Here you have a brief overview of the specializations of your class, with its main spells. You can change specialization by clicking on "activate".
Image 2:
Here is the list of talents specific to your specialization. Some are common with other specs in your class, but all change from class to class. Choose them according to the situation, in a dungeon for example, your talents will not necessarily be the same as for the leveling phase. To change talents, you must be in a "rest zone", namely capitals or neutral cities for example. Next to it are also your PvP talents, which you can only use if your war mode is activated (the big button with the two swords)
.
Image 1:
Here is the place where you can admire your collection of Achievements. Click on the different categories to see which ones interest you. In the tab next to it are your Guild's Achievements, which work much the same as your personal Achievements, except that you need a guild to complete them (+ they are not linked to you but to your guild, changing guild will make you lose these achievements).
Image 2:
Here are various statistics to find out how many fish you caught, how many enemies you killed, how many times you died falling from a mountain...
Image 1:
Here is the list of your quests. You can click on a quest to read its content, abandon it or decide to track it.
Image 1:
The guild tab allows you to access all the information relating to your guild. More info on my special guild guide .
The Communities tab allows you to talk to all community members, form groups and more.
Image 1:
This tab allows you to queue up for normal dungeons, heroic dungeons, or raids in LFR. The advantage is that you do not need to form a group yourself (the rewards are however much lower than the other difficulty modes).
Image 2:
You can use this tab and its categories to find or create a party to complete a quest, achievement, find a dungeon, etc.
Image 3:
Here, it's the PvP tab, and more precisely the "quick game" category, which as its name suggests, allows you to queue for unranked battlegrounds, arenas or brawls. You can also find in this tab your honor level, which increases by killing enemy players, as well as your conquest bar (at the top).
Image 4:
Same thing, but for all that concerns arenas and battlefields sides. Here you will need to form your own group.
Image 5:
Finally you can see your progress in mythical dungeons here, but this feature is reserved for players of maximum level ;)
Image 1:
In this tab, you have access to the mounts collected by all of your characters. Be careful, however, they may not be usable by all characters depending on their faction or their professions.
Image 2:
Here you have a tab for pet fights. You can manage your team, summon pets, or find PvP combat. All pets are linked to the account and can be used by all your characters
.
Image 3:
Here is the toys tab, which brings together the different toys you have obtained during your journeys in Azeroth.
Image 4:
Heirloom items can be purchased by one of your high-level characters to be sent and then used by your low-level characters, in order to increase the experience gained by them.
Image 5:
This tab brings together all the pieces of armor that you have collected since patch 7.2 (unfortunately not before). These items count for some achievements and can be transmogrified.
Image 6:
This tab complements the previous one, because here the items are classified by sets (raids, dungeons and PvP seasons).
Image 1:
A short guide to help you navigate Azeroth. If you don't know what to do or where to go, follow her valuable advice.
Image 2:
Here you have the list of dungeons classified by extensions. Click on a thumbnail to have a dungeon map and the list of bosses with their skills and loot tables
.
Image 3:
Same but for raids.
Image 1:
No need to explain this tab to you, I think it speaks for itself ^^
Image 1:
Here is the last tab, the one that will allow you to access support requests, in-game options as well as the store and interface settings, and more.
Mini-map :
At the top right of your screen is the mini-map, as well as various small tools. The mini-map indicates your position in the world, as well as the position of certain rare enemies, certain PnJ, certain resources ... you can configure all this by clicking on the small magnifying glass.
All around the mini-map, you can find various tools, such as the calendar, a stopwatch (by clicking on the time) and your various addons.
Your first quest
Now it’s time to take your first quest :p
Talk to the NPC, who has a nice yellow exclamation point above his head, he will give you a little quest. Accept it. Afterwards, you will see for yourself that some quests will not please you, so you can abandon them.
To put a quest in follow-up, press the "L" key then select a quest to check the "tracking" box at the bottom left of this quest.
There are several types of quests: kill X monsters, talk to X PnJ, collect X items, kill X boss, and many others.
A lot of quests have detailed tracking: you can see on the map in which zone to go, and on the mini-map, the objects you have to pick up or the bosses you have to kill are also indicated!
There is also a color code for the quests:
The yellow ! means that the quest is feasible by your character.
The grey! means you must reach a higher level before unlocking this quest, usually 1 to 3.
The blue ! means that the quest is repeatable, or that it is a daily quest that can be done only once a day.
The orange ! means the quest is legendary, but that's not right now ^^
The green ! means that a point of flight is available (explanations in the "moving efficiently" section).
To complete a quest, you are given various information: on the one hand, you will see a floating marker showing you the location of the quest area, and on the other hand, a blue area will appear on your mini-map once you will have gone to the quest area.
By hovering the mouse over enemies or items required for a quest, you will see your progress appear in a tooltip at the bottom right of the screen.
Once your quest is complete, return to the PnJ who gave it to you, or go to the PnJ indicated by the quest if the latter is not the quest giver.
By clicking on "finish the quest", you will receive experience and gold (experience turning into bonus gold once the max level is reached).
For some quests, you will also receive various rewards, such as consumables, pieces of equipment, pets, toys, etc.
Enemies and monsters
In general, your first quest will be to pick up some items or kill monsters. I will not dwell on how to pick up objects, because a simple click on it next to it is enough, and this is valid for all the "collection" quests of the game.
Let's talk about enemies. When you place your cursor on an enemy, at the bottom right appears a tooltip:
There are indicated the name of the enemy, his "group" (demon, humanoid, player ...), if a quest is possible by interacting with him (booty, kill, weaken ...), etc.
Again, a color code appears (on the name of the enemy):
Red : This monster is way too strong for you. He will see you from a distance and you will have very little chance of surviving him
Orange : This monster is dangerous. You can kill him but be careful.
Yellow : This monster is your level. You will be able to kill it easily enough, be careful not to attract several enemies at once!
Green : This monster at a few levels less than you, the kill will be easy.
Gray : This monster is much weaker than you. Killing him will be easy, but he will not bring you any point of experience.
This color code also applies to players.
You can also find this color code by looking at the level of the enemy on his portrait. If the enemy has more than 10 levels more than you, a skull will appear instead of his level.
But another color code still appears in our enemies: when you right-click on this enemy, you move to an aggressive stance, but with the left click, the enemy's portrait appears without going into "aggressive mode".
On this portrait figures a color, green , yellow , orange or red .
Obviously our enemies will appear in red, but not to ignore other colors, green is reserved for allies, so not attackable, and the yellow for an enemy who will not attack you if you attack or if you attack him first. Same for orange-red (although this case is rare and exclusive to certain reputations or certain events).
There is also a second classification system for monsters. From time to time, you will see a Golden Dragon around the portrait of an enemy. This is an so-called "elite" enemy. Do not expect to kill him alone if you're on the same level as him ^^
Generally, elite enemies are in the dungeons, but you may find them in the outer areas. However, this Dragon can be of another color.
Indeed, you can cross enemies with a Silver Dragon around their portrait. These are enemies called "rare elites". Unlike elite enemies, the rare elite respwan only very rarely (excluding Legion and BfA rares), and are much more powerful too! Some of these rare elites can offer you fabulous rewards, like mounts for example.
Interact with a player
We have just learned a lot about monsters and your interactions with them.
Now, let's see how to interact with allied players.
By targeting a player with a left click, you will see his portrait appear next to yours.
SORRY FOR THE DISAPOINTMENT, THIS IMAGE IS COMING BACK SOON
Travel efficiently
Although the areas are very beautiful, they are still huge. And do all this on foot, it's a hassle!
To travel within an area, and even between multiple areas, there are several ways to go :)
Hearthstones:
You will first need an object
essential
throughout your adventure: the Hearthstone!
The Hearthstone is an item that you can use every 20 minutes to teleport to an inn.The inns are located in capitals, cities, and some villages.
To assign an inn to your Hearthstone, you must speak to the Innkeeper, indicated by a Hearthstone on your mini-map.
At level 90, you will also unlock a Garrison Hearthstone, which will teleport you to your Garrison in Draenor. And at level 100, you will get the Dalaran Hearthstone, which will teleport you to Dalaran on the Broken Isles.
Flight masters:
Then you must have seen on the map of the Winged Boots of different colors, these are flying points (no it is not GoodYear :p).
The flying points are located everywhere in Azeroth, in cities, villages, or even lost in mountains. They are indicated on the map by a red red boot if you are from the Horde or blue if you are from the Alliance. Yellow boots are neutral flight points.
They are also indicated on the mini-map by an exclamation mark green when it is a new flying point, or by a boot when you have already validated the point.
Once there, talk to the Flight Master who has the famous green exclamation point above his head to validate the point of flight.
Now you can access this point from all other flight points on the continent (and the same continent only)!
Mounts :
Finally, surely one of the coolest features of the game, the famous mounts!
The mounts allow you to move much faster and efficiently. There are 3 types of mounts: terrestrial, flying and aquatic.
From level 20, you can ride land mounts, which will allow you to move on land.
From level 60, you will be able to ride flying mounts, which can, as their name suggests, fly in the air :o
To be able to use a mount, you will however need to buy riding skills from different NPCs, for example for the simplest of access,
玛奇萨
in Orgrimmar and
布娜拉·云翼
in Stormwind.
Here are the skills to buy:
初级骑术
: learn you to use ground mounts (level 10 required)
中级骑术
: increase the speed of ground mounts (level 20 required)
高级骑术
: learn you to use flying mounts (level 30 required)
大师级骑术
: increase the speed of flying mounts (level 40 required)
Previously it was necessary to buy a flight license for each continent, but now once the skill
高级骑术
learned, you will be able to fly anywhere (except starting areas of Blood Elves and Draenei).
And of course most importantly, you need a mount! There are several hundred, turtles, dragons, spiders, raptors, robots...
There is a choice! The mounts can be obtained in several different ways, but we will remain simple for your first mount ;)
At level 10, you can buy one from
奥古纳罗
in Orgrimmar or
凯蒂·斯托克斯
in Stormwind.
Know that there is a whole system of transport in Azeroth. Between portals, boats, zeppelins ... The possibilities of travel are numerous ;)
The adventure really begins!
Evolve your character
Starter zones:
When you first arrive in the game, you will be invited to discover the area dedicated to beginners: the Exile's Reach.
This rather special area serves as a tutorial from level 1 to level 10. You will learn the basics of your class and interactions with the world.
Once this area is complete, when you create another character in the future, you can discover their original starting area.
Leveling up:
The maximum level in World of Warcraft is 60. It was 120 until Battle for Azeroth, then was halved for Shadowlands.
To gain experience levels, there are several methods:
Complete quests
Run dungeons
Fight in battlegrounds
Explore the worlds
Since Shadowlands, the method for leveling up has changed significantly! Previously, you had to up a character from level 1 to level 120 through the areas of each of the expansions:
From level 1 to level 60: Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms
From level 60 to level 70: Outland
From level 70 to level 80: Northrend
From level 80 to level 85: Cataclysm zones
From level 85 to level 90: Pandaria
From level 90 to level 100: Draenor
From level 100 to level 110: Broken Isles
From level 110 to level 120: Zandalar and Kul Tiras
This is all over! Now, just talk to Chromie in Orgrimmar and Stormwind to choose the expansion you want to evolve into!
You can therefore choose to go to the Broken Isles at level 10 or to Northrend at level 45!
By choosing a timeline, the level of monsters, the level of equipment gained and experience gains will automatically be adjusted to your level for all areas of the chosen expansion.
You can of course switch extensions at any time by talking to Chromie again.
Note:
if this is your first character, you will have no choice but to level up in Battle for Azeroth after exiting the Exile's Reach. The choice of the expansion will come later for your future characters.
Obtain a better equipment:
Equipment can be obtained as quest rewards, monsters, chests, or even bosses in dungeons and raids.
The equipment is divided into 4 major groups: fabric, leather, mesh and plate. Depending on your class, you will need to choose a certain type of equipment:
Plates:
Warriors, Paladins and Death Knights
Mail:
Hunters and Shamans
Leather:
Rogues, Demon Hunters, Druids and Monks
Cloth:
Mages, Priests and Warlocks
There are also 6 types of "qualities" for your pieces of equipment: poor , common , uncommon , rare , epic and legendary .
At the start of your adventure, you will find only common or unusual stuff. It is by completing quests and completing dungeons that you will get rare or epic stuff that will significantly increase your power. Legendary equipment is very rare and often requires long quest lines to be obtained. More information in this guide.
Each equipment piece gives you various statistics, it's up to you to take the one that best corresponds to your class (the main characteristics are indicated in the "specializations" tab, "N" key by default).
Some equipment is also part of what is called a "set". If you are equipped with several pieces of the same set, you will unlock various bonuses, such as armor, strength, passive effects, etc.
Finally, know that the equipment is not indestructible! Over the course of the fights or if you die, what is called the "durability" of your equipment will gradually approach 0.
Each piece of equipment has maximum durability, and a simple visit to a blacksmith will allow you to refurbish your equipment for a handful of gold!
When your gear is nearly broken, a sort of armored mannequin will appear next to your quest list. Pieces in yellow correspond to a piece of your equipment that is almost broken, and a piece in red means your piece is broken.
If a piece of armor is broken, you will lose the stats it gave you until you have it repaired at a blacksmith.
Note that getting killed by an enemy player does not lower the durability of your equipment.
Introduction to PvE
"PvE" is an abbreviation of "Player Versus Environment".
PvE is about all your interactions with monsters and enemies controlled by artificial intelligence. Dungeons, raids, quests... all this goes into PvE! Unlike PvP (which we'll see right after), passing through PvE is mandatory. For all that is quests and exploration, I think there is no problem, these are fairly simple features to understand. We will therefore focus mainly on dungeons and raids.
Dungeons :
Dungeons are instances of 5 players that last an average of fifteen minutes and allow you to fight many enemies and several bosses to obtain better equipment.
Each extension brings a lot of new dungeons, all adapted to the max level of the extension during which they appeared. The difficulty does not necessarily increase, but you will not be able to go into a dungeon if the level of enemies inside is higher than yours.
There are several dungeon difficulties: the
normal mode
, the
heroic mode
, the
mythic mode
and the
mythic+ mode
:
o Normal and heroic modes appeared vanilla. To enter these dungeons, you can register via the automatic dungeon search tool.
You can only queue for dungeons of the expansion you chose at Chromie.
o Mythic and mythic+ modes have been introduced in Legion as a major content. As it is high-level content, I will not dwell too much on the subject. To find out more, go to the "once level 60" section.
Raids :
Raids are large instances, whose number of players is flexible depending on the raids. The levels of difficulty of the raids are quite complicated to explain, because they change with each extension. Some are deleted, modified, added ... without changing the old raids :p
o Vanilla Raids : mode
40 players
.
o BC Raids : mode
25 players
only for most, mode
10 players
for Karazhan and flexible
mode 10-30 players
for the Black Temple (since Legion)
o WolLK raids : mode
10 players
and mode
25 players
for the most part; mode
10 players normal, 10 players heroic, 25 players normal
and
25 players heroic
for others
o Cataclysm Raids : Mode
10 players normal, 10 players heroic, 25 players normal
and
25 players heroic
for all raids; Dragons Soul also has the mode
LFR
o MoP Raids :
LFR mode, 10 normal players, 10 heroic players, 25 normal players
and
25 heroic players
for all raids; Siege of Orgrimmar also has the mode
Mythic
o WoD Raids :
LFR
mode,
normal flexible 10-30 players, heroic flexible 10-30 players
and
mythic
o Legion raids : mode
LFR
,
normal flexible 10-30 players, heroic flexible 10-30 players
and
mythic
o Raids of BfA : mode
LFR
,
normal flexible 10-30 players, heroic flexible 10-30 players
and
mythic
It's complicated, is’nt it? ^^
But don’t worry, you will not have any opportunity to do the old raids during your pex phase. You can go back later, and you will see that no matter how difficult, you will roll on the bosses and kill them by pressing a single key;)
Remember especially the modes
LFR, normal, heroic and mythic
, which are the 4 current difficulty modes. LFR stands for "Looking for Raid". Indeed, thanks to the search tool of raid, you will be able to find automatically a group with whom to make a raid :p
However, LFR raids are divided into several parts, for those who do not have the time or the motivation to make a full raid for example.
For normal, hero and mythic, you will have to form your own group, and go on the raid on foot, and you can do it in full. The rewards obviously increase depending on the difficulty ;)
Introduction to PvP
"PvP" is an abbreviation of "Player Versus Player".
PvP is about all the actions you take for all enemy characters controlled by real players.
Killing enemy player characters increases your honor rank, which will offer you great rewards once a certain level has been reached (mounts, toys, titles, etc.).
There are two types of PvP:
World PvP
and
Instanced PvP
.
World PvP:
World PvP unfolds everywhere in Azeroth, outdoors ;)
To participate, you must go to Orgrimmar or Stormwind, open your talent tab and activate the
War Mode
. Without him, you will not be able to tap the members of the enemy faction!
Alone or with others, fight the enemy players! Attack their capitals, defend yours, or simply fight to gain access to chests or enemies.
Killing enemies that are above 10 levels below you will not bring you experience or honor points. No need to farm the nice players who level :)
There are also large areas of open PvP, such as Tol Barad, Wintergrasp or more recently the Arathi Highlands.
Instanced PvP :
Instanced PvP is mainly about battlefields and arenas, but you will see later that there are also one or two other cool stuff.
You with access to several game modes via the PvP group search tool:
o Skirmishes: unlisted 2v2 or 3v3 arenas, to learn how to play his class or to win small rewards quietly.
o Ranked arenas: 2v2 or 3v3 arena side, with a ranking, seasons and many awards. You must form your own group to register.
o Battlegrounds: There are many battlegrounds, the number of players and goals vary for each. Flag catch, domination, escort ... there is a choice ;)
o Ranked battlegrounds: just like normal battlefields, but with higher rankings and rewards: p
o PvP Brawls: From time to time, you will have access to a special PvP shock for a limited time. These are battlegrounds or arenas with new rules, such as 15v15 arenas, battlefields with no gravity or with multiple flags, and so on. Really nice;)
Completing all of these activities will earn you Conquest Points, useful for purchasing PvP gear in Shadowlands.
Life and death on Azeroth
The world of Azeroth is full of dangers. Monsters or enemy players, you are nowhere safe!
Sometimes you will die, for example if you saw a little too big in terms of aggro :)
When you die, you are teleported to the nearest graveyard, which has a Spirit Healer in it.
You have several ways to come back to life:
Returning to your corpse: From the graveyard, simply walk back to your corpse in order to resurrect. Performing this action too often will increase the time needed between each resurrection.
If you don't want to return to your corpse, you can resurrect directly at the graveyard by talking to the Spirit Healer. Be careful though, you will suffer a penalty reducing your statistics by 75% for 10 minutes!
An allied player can use a resurrection spell on you to instantly revive you with a certain amount of your health.
Socialize with other players
The social side is one of the strengths of WoW, and to become someone sociable, there are several tools!
Channels:
First, here are the commands that allow you to communicate in different ways (type them in the chat bar):
/s
: to speak "in the void", nearby players will hear you
/w
(targeting a player): Private message, only the affected player will receive the message.
/gr
: for a group of 2 to 5 people.
/i
: for a raid group, from 5 to 40 people.
/g
: to talk to your guild.
/officer
: to talk to guild officers.
/cry
: To cry, all players in the area will hear you.
/1 /2 /3 /4
: Various discussion channels, such as general or trade. In these discussion channels, you will be able to write your messages, and see those of other players! Feel free to use them !
If you need help or search the world for quest or an Achievement for example, you can "link" what you want in the chat. To do this, open your chat by doing a simple left click on the bar chat (a cursor must flash in once this done). Then, use the key combination "SHIFT" + "Left click" by clicking on the quest concerned, it will make it appear in the chat. You and the other players, once the message has been sent, can click on this quest directly in the chat in order to have all the information on it!
Guilds and communities :
Guilds: You will have the opportunity during your journey to join a guild and communities. For guilds, I've prepared a dedicated guide just waiting for you:
Le guide des guildes
Communities : they are kind of huge guilds, which bring together players from all servers, but without all the constraints of a guild! There are communities for everything, for raids, collections of achievements, pets battles...
The social tab :
Pressing the "O" key will reveal a new tab. Here you will see your battletag and all your friends connected!
To add a friend, ask him for his batletag, then enter it simply after clicking on "add a friend"!
In the small "Who" tab, if you type a zone name, a character name, a level, etc ... you will be able to see all the players in the zone, having a similar name or being of this level (and many others).
In the "discussion" tab, you will see all the chat channels in which you are allowed to speak.
In the tab "raid", you will see when will reinitialize the next raids and dungeons (do not ask me what this tab just fuck in the social tab XD).
Becoming a guide
With Shadowlands, a new feature has appeared: the guide system.
Guides are seasoned players who get access to a discussion channel reserved for new players, who can ask them a lot of questions.
To become a guide, you must respect a few conditions:
Be level 50 or more
Have obtained the achievement
完成3000个任务
Have obtained two of the following three a chievements:
老兵三重唱
,
觉醒之梦
,
技术奇点
.
Once you've done that, just go talk to
艾拉·引路者
in Orgrimmar or to
瑟蕾丝特·贝利文科
in Storwind to receive the guide status.
Guides can be recognized in capital cities by a small green flag that flies above their heads, while new players will have a murloc icon above theirs.
What to do in capital cities?
All capital cities
As soon as you have finished your starting zone, around level 10 for most races, you will finally be able to access a capital, places where all the points of interest of Azeroth gather! There are several capitals involved, here they are:
Horde’s capitals:
Orgrimmar
, located in Durotar, Kalimdor. Main Capital of the Horde. Host Orcs, Trolls, Pandaren, Goblins and recently the Forsaken.
Thunder Bluff
, located in Mulgore, Kalimdor. Host the Tauren.
Undercity
, located in the Tirisfal Glades, Eastern Kingdoms. Destroyed recently, it sheltered the Forsaken. However, it remains accessible for low levels, and speaking to Zidormi for levels 120.
Silvermoon
, located in the Eversong Woods, in the Eastern Kingdoms. Host the Blood Elves.
Shrine of the Two Moons
, located in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, in Pandaria. Accessible from level 80.
Warspear
, located in A'shran, in Draenor. Accessible from level 100.
Dazar'Alor
, located in Zuldazar, in Zandalar. Accessible from level 110.
Alliance’s capitals:
Stormwind
, located in Elwynn Forest, Eastern Kingdoms. Main Capital of the Alliance. Hosts the Humans, the Pandaren, and lately the Night Elves and the Worgen.
Ironforge
, located at Dun Morogh, in the Eastern Kingdoms. Hosts Dwarves and Gnomes.
Darnassus
, located in Teldrassil, Kalimdor. Destroyed recently, it sheltered the Night Elves and the Worgen. It is still accessible for low levels, and speaking to Zidormi for levels 120.
The Exodar
, located on Azuremyst Isle, in Kalimdor. Host the Draenei.
Sanctuary of the Seven Stars located in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, in Pandaria. Accessible from level 80.
Shield’s Rest , located in A'shran, Draenor. Accessible from level 90.
Boralus
, located in Tiragarde Sound, in Kul Tiras. Accessible from level 110.
Neutral capitals:
Shattrath
, located in Terokkar Forest, Outland. Accessible from level 60.
Ancient Dalaran
, located in the Crystalsong Forest, Northrend. Accessible from level 60.
Dalaran
, located above the Great Sea, on the Broken Islands. Accessible from level 100.
Oribos
, located in the Shadowlands
For all the next parts, you will have to go to several important places in capitals. To find a particular place, you can talk to the guards of the city. They are marked by a small parchment when you hover over them. They will offer you plenty of places, such as banks, trades, and other points of interest.
The different banks
There are 3 types of banks: the bank, the guild bank and the vacuum chamber. Let's look in detail at each of these banks:
The bank:
"Normal" banks are found in all capitals, and in many cities. And they are very useful!
You can drop objects that you do not use at the moment. Armor, legendary items, gadgets, etc. You can even deposit money!
However, you will find that there are very few places available.
So you have a tab "component bank", which will be used to store all items related to trades.
Do you think there is still not enough room? Do not panic!
You also have the option to buy bags (it costs almost nothing). And in these bags, you can place new items! For example, if you place a 26-sack at the bank, you'll be able to get rid of 26 more items! (and I discovered this after 5 years of play, shame on me XD).
Guild’s bank :
To access guild banks, you will need ... a guild :p
The guild bank operates in the same way as the personal bank, where you can deposit items and gold. Except it has a lot more space! You can have up to 8 bank tabs, or 784 slots to store your items! Well of course, you have to share with the other members of the guild ^^
Only the guild leader and the people he has named can manage the permissions of the guild bank. You will not be able to remove or drop anything anytime:p
The Void Storage :
And if between your personal bank and your guild bank you still lack space, the race of the ethereal has thought of you!
Indeed, you will be able to acquire the Void Storage, which is only present in certain capitals. Do not forget to ask your way to a guard to find it ;)
The Void Storage will cost you the small sum of 1000gold at the time of the acquisition, but will ask you to pay 25 gold to deposit a single object! Withdrawals are however free.
This rather special bank has no less than 80 sites, and will be used to store equipment, enchantments or archaeological finds.
The Auction House
Now, without wasting any more time, let's talk about money, because as Gallywix says so well, time is money!
Auction Houses are where the people of Azeroth meet to do business. You can find Auction Houses in all capital cities.
By talking to an auctioneer, a new panel is offered to you with 3 different tabs:
Browse:
in this tab you can type the name of the item you are looking for. If it is sold by another player on your server, you will see it appear and can buy it if you can afford it! You can also filter the search results by choosing a specific category or by clicking on "filters" at the top right of the window.
Bids:
this tab is used to sell your own items. You can set a starting price for an auction, a direct buy price, and a sell duration. Please note that all items can't be sold. For example, if an item is binded, it cannot be offered for sale.
Auctions:
in this last tab, you can view all your current sales.
Little more details:
Auction houses are neutral, which means the Alliance and Horde can buy items from the other faction.
You cannot buy items sold by other characters on your account.
You will be taxed 15% of your sale price by our dear goblin friends.
Once a purchase is made, it is immediately sent to your mailbox.
Once an item is sold, you receive a message in the chat, and your golds will arrive in your mailbox after an hour.
If your item cannot find a buyer at the end of 48 hours, it will automatically be returned to your mailbox.
The Mailboxes
Speaking of mailbox! You will find them everywhere, dozens in town, at least one in each village, and often near the flying points. You can not miss them!
When you receive mail, a small letter icon appears to the right of your mini-map.
Several people can send you mail:
Players
: they can send you items, gold, or just a little message
NPCs
: as for players, they can leave you a little something after a quest or a Achievements
The Postmaster
: delivers to you by mail all the items you forgot to pick up on the monsters in dungeons and raids
Game Masters
: can send you items, either automatically (events, object restoration ...), or manually.
The letters are kept for 30 days, except those of the Masters of the Game which are kept 90 days.
Mail between players takes 1 hour to arrive at destination unless you and the recipient are in the same guild. In this case, the reception of the mail will be instantaneous.
When you send an item to a player, you can ask for gold in exchange for the item. If the player pays, he will be able to recover the object. Otherwise, it will be re-shipped after 30 days!
You can not send mail to a player of the opposite faction, however, you can send certain items to your own characters even if they are from different factions.
Other points of interest
Several other points of interest waiting for you in the capitals:
Portals:
In Orgrimmar and Hurlevent you can find a good fifteen portals that will allow you to travel anywhere in Azeroth.
In the other capitals, several portal are also present. You can see my map in the next part.
Transmogrifier:
Talk to him to change the appearance of your equipment. To choose another appearance, you must have already obtained the piece in question.
For example, you find the beautiful Orgrimmar Seat set, and you definitely want to look like that. Only, the raid and old, and the equipment today is obsolete.
So you can go to Orgrimmar Headquarters several times to get all the pieces of equipment you need. Then go see the transmogrifier, and transform your current equipment into that of Orgrimmar Headquarters! Only the appearance will change, not the statistics!
Class Masters:
Class teachers have become almost useless over time. Their only usefulness today is that they allow you to visit the Proving Grounds.
Professions Masters:
Archaeologist, couturier, breaker or fisherman, all the tradesmen await you in the big cities.
They will teach you how to evolve in your business, and will each offer you recipes and utensils essential for your own trades.
The Embassy:
Once at level 110, then at level 120, you will have the opportunity to recruit allied races.
The scenarios and quests for these races begin in the embassies of Orgrimmar and Stormwind.
Traveling all over Azeroth
The capitals offer a great way to travel anywhere in Azeroth. Portals, boats, zeppelins, there is something for everyone.
Here is the transport map I created, it may be missing one or two, but the main ones are there: p
The map dates from Legion, and I'll admit that as there are more and more portals and transport, it may take me a little time to redo everything ^^
The features
Achievements
The Achievements feature is one of the biggest feature in World of Warcraft. You can obtain more than 3 300 achievements !
These achievements can be obtained in dozens of different ways, by dungeons for example, or via reputations, purchases, mounted in levels ...
The Feats of Strength category, is a pretty special part that you can fill with achievements harder than the average: they are all listed here ;)
Most of the achievements can be obtained alone, but some others require a group or a raid group.
Collections
You have a lot of things to collect in this game :
Mounts :
guide for all the obtainable mounts
Pets :
all pets collection
Toys :
guide for all obtainable toys
Heirlooms :
complete guide for heiloom equipments
Transmog :
wowhead's guides list for tmog
Guilds and Communities
Guilds :
To know everything about guilds, I will redirect you to my guide specifically dedicated to this functionality:
Le guide des guildes
Communities :
The functionality of communities is all new!
Create or join communities to share your experiences with hundreds of players!
I'll let you discover a little more here:
https://eu.battle.net/forums/fr/wow/topic/17620761926
Pets battles
The battle pets will always make you think of the mythical Pokémon. It's normal, it's exactly the same, except that the max level is 25, the number of mascots in his team is 3 and their abilities are also 3.
You can meet and fight new pets in every area of the game. You can face real players by going into the pet’s collection tab, creating your own team and then clicking on "Find a fight".
More informations here.
Professions
There are all kinds of professions in World of Waracft. They are used to make money, but also to make equipment, to obtain Achievements, etc ...
Anyone can find his account ;)
You can go up to two main professions at a time, as well as the three secondary ones.
The main professions are :
Alchemy
,
Blacksmithing
,
Enchanting
,
Engineering
,
Herbalism
,
Inscription
,
Jewelcrafting
,
Leatherworking
,
Mining
,
Skinning
et
Tailoring
.
The secondary professions are :
Archaeology
,
Cooking
, et
Fishing
.
Since BfA, you do not need to type the 800 skill points of each job! These points are now divided into several categories, one by extension.
Performing actions (harvest, craft, fishing, etc.) with items of extension X will give you points in the X category :p
For example, if you are a Herbalist, plucking a plant in Outland will raise your skill in the "Outland" category.
Or if you are an Engineer, if you make an item whose plan is recovered in Pandaria, you will earn points in the "Pandaria" category.
You can buy supplies for your professions at different NPCs, or at the a.h, to get them up faster.
More informations here.
Reputations
Reputations are very important as well. There are more than 70 reputations to climb to the exalted stage. Once exalted, full of rewards are offered to you, like mounts, toys, pets...
All this being purchasable to the stewards of the different factions. There are 8 levels of reputations:
Exalted (1000): Unlock all rewards and quest related to this faction. The maximum points are 999/1000. 20% off items related to the faction.
Revered (21 000): Unlock other quests and rewards for this faction. 15% off items related to the faction.
Honored (12 000): Can unlock new quests and rewards. 10% off items related to the faction.
Friendly (6 000): Can unlock new quests and rewards. 5% off items related to the faction.
Neutral (3 000): Can unlock new quests and rewards.
Unfirendly (3 000): Can not buy, sell or interact with this faction. Will only attack you if you attack them.
Hostile (3000): You will be attacked at sight.
Hated (36 000): You will be attacked at sight.
For most reputations, you start neutral, leaving you with only 5 steps to go through. For other reputations, you will be able to mount from Hai to exalted, and for a third type of reputation, you will be unable to get out of the hate, as for the repeats of the faction opposite to yours.

Frequently Asked Questions
What do I need to buy and in which order?
To access the WoW content, you will need two things:
A monthly subscription, to access all the expansions from Vanilla to Battle for Azeroth, and the last expansion, Battle for Azroth, to access 100% of the game content.
I use my token on the bad character, can I undo it?
Nop, it's impossible ! You need to be really carful before using this precious token !
I can't enter in any instance, what can I do?
After using a token, you need to wait between 24h and 48h to obtain the access to all the functionalities of the game.
I would like to play on another server region, what can I do ?
Currently, you can not play on a different region with your account. If you bought an EU version of WoW, you will not be able to play on the US servers for exemple. Also, you can't transfer your toons and your account from a region to another.
The only way to play on a different region, it's to buy a new wow licence for this region. But by doing this, you will not recover your progression, your toons and all the game content you got on your main account.
Can I freeze my subscription?
Currently, you can't. One month of game time, once bought, has to be used in the current month.
I didn't receive my rewards from the Recruit-a-friend program, what can I do?
You may have to wait 2-3 days to get your reward. Also, if your partner bought a 6-months suscription, you'll get your rewards one by one at the beginning of each month.

I threw up an item that I needed, how to recover it?
If you lost an item that you needed, try this link :
https://eu.battle.net/support/en/restoration
You can use this service only once per month.
My character is stuck, help!
Most of the time when your character is stuck, you can use a hearthstone to help you out. In other cases, you can press "escape", then "help", and finally "stuck character". This option will kill your character so you can respawn in a safe and trouble-free place.
Servers are « incompatibles », my toon is « not found » or « the world server is stop ». What does it mean?
These messages can appear if your version of the game is different from the server's version.
Close WoW, wait for the launcher to do the update, then it should be ok.
What is illegal to do on World of Warcraft ?
Illegal and liable to banishment :

o And obviously, all types of hacks
Small parenthesis, it is forbidden to denounce a player practicing one of its illicit activities on the forums, because YOU risk a ban ^^. You must report the player in question in game, for this, do a left click on the player, then a right click on his window, and finally choose "report the player".
Is multiboxing allowed ?
Since Shadowlands, the multiboxing is not allowed anymore. Using a software that replicate your actions will result in a definitive ban.
What is the PTR, and how to access it ?
PTR (Public Test Realm) is a special server, usually having an update in advance on the normal server (live server). You can download it from the launcher. The purpose of this server is to be able to test the new features and to detect any bugs. Be careful, your progress on this server is not preserved on the live
What's an addon and how to download it ?
An addon is a small tool to download in addition to wow, you will find thousands on the site Curse.
The addons are very useful, they serve a lot of things: indicate important monsters on the map, show the strategy of a boss during a fight, make the interface more customizable ...
To install an addon, download it from the Curse site and unzip it. Then open your World of Warcraft folder, then go to "interface" and then "addons".
Drag and drop the downloaded addon folder into the "addons" folder, and that's it ;)
How to protect your World of Warcraft account

wants to contact you,
a special window
opens.
GM have a Blizzard logo beside their names
, and
and never write in the common tchatbox
!
If a player contacts you with a pink writing in the usual chat window pretending to be a Game Master, or asking you for personal information,
it is a scam
, do not do not answer and report the player !
Official Blizzard's emails
are : :
@blizzard.com, @em.blizzard.com, @overwatchleague.com, @email.blizzard.com
and
@battle.net
. If the name is different,
it's a scam
! Don't answer, to click on the links inside the mail and block the expeditor !

codes, mounts, gold, etc.
, against real money are
illegal
! Their use will be liable to
banishment
Sites like G2A, Instant Gaming or other sites that get discounts
are allowed
, but
scams and problems are recurring
on that kind of site. Blizzard
will not be liable
for any wrong or used key purchase, and
will not be able to reimburse you
! Use with caution!
Secure your account :
To secure your account, go to the your account's settings:

complex password
: at least
10 characters
, with

World of Warcraft for new players, please vote if this guide was helpful ;)

Nice guide you got here! Here are a few notes to upgrade it, maybe.
Perhaps you could give more information about the classes. Like what armor are they wearing, how that will affect the gameplay and what can the new players expect of each class?
Another thing I would put more effort in is the 'Guild' section. It's so important to get in a guild where you feel comfortable, especially if you're a new player (and with several guilds inviting everyone instantly at level 1 without offering any help in any form, whatsoever). Guilds can help new players get into the game faster and detailed, personal info/help is much more valuable than any guide. Guild = important!
