This is a beginner's guide on how to begin roleplaying. Not everything is included here but there is a lot of information to help you get started. If there is anything else I could add, feel free to add it below in the comments. I hope this helps you get started in roleplaying.
IC and OOC
The first thing to know is the difference between
IC - In character
, and
OOC - Out of character
. IC is when you act as though
you are your character
and there are rules that you have to stay within while you are IC.
You do not know the character's name the first time you see them.
You as a character cannot see the name above a character's head
. It is the real world for them and in our real world we can't see names above people's heads, It is an OOC thing to tell the player who someone else is. The player can use this to meet people, but the character has no idea who the person is. S
eeing as you are IC and playing as your character, they do not know the other persons name before asking for it
.
You do not use language such as 'lol' or 'YOLO.' This is another OOC thing which is not present in WOW.
Keep the chat to /s! You cannot RP in trade or general. These channels are OOC channels and they do not exist whilst RPing. You also cannot say thing's like, 'Let's meet in SW.' You can't use OOC abbreviations.
Anything you say or do is what your character is saying and doing. The same goes for other RPers. If you get offended OOCly by something, then brush it off as it is not aimed at you directly, but your character. Someone's character could hate your character, but the player could be your vest friend in real life. That doesn't mean to say you can break real world laws in RP.
Know what's metagaming and what isn't. Metagaming means using OOC knowledge to influence IC gameplay.
Emote! Use /e smiled and nodded. This means that your character is doing that. So if your chatting to someone, you could say /e nods and smiles in agreement. Which would print out. nods and smiles in agreement. Don't power emote! Do not say /e punches someone. You have to say attempts to. The right way to do it would be /e attempts to punch someone.
Choosing your story
So, you want to make your character's story? Well first things first, what race and class is your character. The first of this is the most important, the race. People can not judge outwardly someone's class. So for example, you would not go up to someone and say, well hello there, Rogue. This is because they cannot tell what class someone else is in character. Of course, it may be easy to tell by what they are wearing, but anyone can wear a Priest's robes, whatever class they are.
Where was your character born? Where do they live? What do they do as a job? All these things are part of your character's story and they will be things that you get asked while you are RPing. Does your character have a nickname? If so, tell people!
Quick Quiz
Read the following questions and see if you get the questions right!
What is the right way to say the following:
'Let's meet in SW' OR 'Let's meet in Stormwind'
Corrct answer: 'Let's meet in Stormwind'
What is the right way to say the following:
'/e punched the Dwarf right in the face!' OR '/e attempts to punch the Dwarf right in the face. If he succeeds, the impact may cause the Dwarf to fall over.'
Correct answer: '/e attempts to punch the Dwarf right in the face. If he succeeds, the impact may cause the Dwarf to fall over.'
Wear what's appropriate!
If you are a paladin and your on duty, you will want to wear what a paladin would wear. You would not want to wear a cloth set, that would be strange. You could wear that as normal cloth when you are of duty relaxing in a pub though. If you are on duty, you willow ant to wear armour. A good set for on duty guards would be
君王板甲
which is what a lot of Stormwind Guard RP guilds use as their uniform.
So, you are standing there in your armour as an on duty paladin, you are standing in Cathedral Square and you are looking round you. You see someone fighting, it's none of your business really but you want to help before someone gets hurt. You approach them and begin to talk, 'Hey, what do you think your doing? Can't you see that Gnome is getting hurt?!' You announce.
They look at you and tell you to mind your own business, it has nothing to do with you and you should leave ether alone. What would you do next? The decision is up to you!

Nice guide. It was an interesting read for a non-RPer. Consider adding some visual elements.
