He's pretty rough, I tried to solo him as a 73 BM hunter and he took my pet down in like 5-6 hits. I can see how high armor classes might be able to tackle him but for everyone else, check for a group.

Soloed on my level 73 Unholy Death Knight. Wound up in Ghoul form at the very end, but that was because I hadn't brought any potions. Death Strike will basically heal you for all you need in this fight, though.

Solo'd rather easily as a 75 prot pally. Only about 18k health and just used seal of light + judgement of light while keeping holy shield up. Not actually casting a heal, the whole fight left me with 0 mana and about 70% health left.

Solo'd as a level 76 Blood Death Knight.
Hard and fast hitting mob.
Start off with Mark of Blood.
Full DPS with the Blood starter rotation.
Once all runes have been spent, you should have 100 Runic power, whip out the Dancing Rune Blade + Empower Rune Weapon and Heart Strike away, with the possibility of a few Death Strikes.
Follow that with DPS rotation including Death Strikes as appose to Obliterate and keep Vampiric Blood along with Icebound future going and you should be fine.
Give or take a few pots.

First, I would like to add she doesnt just knock you back (as stated above), but also casts some kind of cloud that decreases your attack and casting speed (the ability is found in the list)
Tried as a 75 rogue with a hybrid build... was going to end as a disaster, then a... i think 72 priest came in to help. Even then it was kinda hard, but my build/items are really not optimal. Still, i dont think a rogue can solo it. No stuns, no weapon to disarm, just 1 spell to clos but he casts it all the time..
Would be much easier if a tank held aggro though, probably two-mannable with a tank+good dps w/o heals (im thinking, war=low dmg taken from him, other tanks=also can heal themselves).

soloed as 74 sl/fg lock. this was the hardest of the group quests in Dragonblight for me to solo (besides kreug oathbringer who I can't solo) I used only used siphon life and corruption for damage + pet healing to not draw aggro but I still had issues with aggro. I would suggest watching your aggro very closely and holding back on damage as Elvador recommended above.

t can be tamed. set a frost trap thenwalk backa bit. shoot a concussive shot then start the tame. the frost trap should freeze it ad not interrupt the taming process. Wonder if it would have the same amount of health then.

I wasn't able to do it as 73 Ret in Ret gear but it was quite doable as 74 Ret in Holy gear, just move out of the Clouds, use Judgement of Wisdom and Seal of Wisdom and keep yourself topped all the time.

Flame Shocked at the start, spammed lesser healing wave, refreshed water shield, flame shock, or cast a lava burst when i was reasonably ok on health. Got an add about half way, but was able to continue healing through the damage. Took me a few tries, but doable.

Just soloed as a 72 Blood DK with 482 defense (mostly quest gear, a handful of gear from BC instances), 13k hp in frost.
Keep up plagues, Blade Barrier with liberal Death-Strikes, throwing in an Icebound Fortitude, Mark of Blood and Blood Tap when it's cool. Will of the Necropolis probably made it possible. I had to Death Pact and down a Super Healing Potion once. I'm not sure if it did much, since I seemed to float at 30% from Will of the Necropolis the second half of the fight. Good luck, DKs, you are a hero class, let it show.

Soloed as an Enhancement Shaman (lvl 75) in mostly Northrend quest gear (the good blues etc). 9k health, 7k mana.
Put up totems (Healing Stream, Windfury, Strength of Earth and Fire Elemental) and burned all my cooldowns (wolves, bloodlust, AP trinkets, the works). You probably need to be lvl 75 for the new rank of Healing Wave (which you'll need to keep yourself alive even with the wolves). Try to squeeze in a few LBs when you're not taking too much damage. Keep a pot ready for the early phase of the fight when you don't have a 5 stack of MW ready to heal.

Solo'd as a lvl 73 Blood DK in frost presence. He hits pretty hard but it's mostly his large health pool that makes him a pain to deal with. Just stagger your cooldowns (IBF + MoB), and use death strike anytime its available while spamming heart strike and ghoul sac when necessary. It's a decently long fight because of his health but it's do-able.

After several tries, finally soloed him as a L74 retribution paladin. Used shield and 1h weapon with devotion aura. Blessing of wisdom, seal of light and stay out of the dream cloud. The hard part is staying out of the cloud, because that will make you heal too slowly to keep up with the damage the bird does.
First priority, stay out of the cloud. Second priority, stay healed. Third priority, do damage. :)

I got to tame him at time of this post as a lvl 75 hunter, with my Priest friend lvl 80, who buffed me up and bubbled me, the only thing was the buffet is random and when it hits it breaks taming so took a number of goes to get him. On the last attempt he didn't buffet once and I got him, one thing I did notice was he is more likely to buffet if you summon him when he is already air born as opposed to resting on his perch.
So I have been able to tame four rare eleite pets
Olm the wise from Fel Wood, Sian-Rotam from Winterspring, Hozzer from Howling Fjord and now my final pet Alystros the Verdant Keeper

He's one of those mobs who make you wish you could keep attacking even after he's dead...
Anyway: solo'd on second try as 74 (Frost tank) DK. First time was in my soloing gear; got him down to about 10% before I died (almost halfway across the grove; damn the Blizzard devs who decided to give this guy a knockback). Second attempt, threw on my tank gear, Elixir'd, and went at it. Had to use a Runic health pot and my tank macro (Unbreakable Armor + IBF), as well as Death Strike spam.
One thing to share for melee people: there's a tree near his spawn point. If you drag him over to the tree and put your back to it, you'll get knocked into the air a little bit, but you'll barely move other than that (for some reason, it causes the "No path available" message for Pestilence >.<).

Soloed him as a 73 prot paladin.
Had Devotion Aura, Imp Righteous Fury, Blessing of Wisdom, Seal of Wisdom up at all times and used Judgement of Wisdom for maximum mana regen as i needed to use Holy Light alot in this fight. I saved my mana for Holy Light in this fight and mostly only used melee and Judgment of Wisdom as damage spell.
The trick here is to stay out of his AoE smoke becouse it is a real pain, not only for your dps, but also that you need to use Holy Light quite often in this fight, so whenever he does that, you need to get out of the smoke ASAP. You also have to watch out for his knockback ability, also for 2 reasons. One is that it can interrupt your heal, and that could be fatal. The other one is that it can push you back into a flower or another owl (Taking a beating from the big owl is enough, trust me).
What i did after engaging is using my trinkets whenever they are ready (only have dps trinkets) and used Holy Light when i had less than 3000 health. Holy Shield is needed at all times, becouse he hits hard!
When i had to low mana for Holy Light and had about 5-10% hp left, i used Divine Shield and Bandaged, maked me survive for another 30 sec of the fight, so i had enough mana again for a few more Holy Lights. Then when i again had to low mana to heal and starting to drop, i used mana potion for a few at the spot. By the time i again have low hp and no mana, i use Divine Shield again and bandages. That's another 30 sec of my life. When i AGAIN get low on hp and out of mana, i used Lay of Hands. Full hp and 900 mana in a instant, i could fight a few minutes more with Holy Light with me. I used Divine Shield for the last time when i started to hit 10% and out of mana, did another bandage and finaly killed him.
Took me about 15 minutes to kill this damn bird >.<

killed as lv 74 beast mastery hunter (51/14/0 for the talents) in the first attempt.
my devilsaur went for dmg talents only, therefore had only around 9,7k health and 50% armor reduce.
use misdirection when possible, 100% uptime for mend pet is required as one missing tick may already be deadly to your pet.
use
distracting shot
every now and then and also whenever your pet falls below 35-50% hp. run a few yards to let mend pet regain some health and get some distance for the next taunt, then feign death. you won't stand in the AoE for long as a side effect, too. not that i would recommend to stand in it, that debuff can really hinder your pet's threat generation...
the pet should be able to live through all of the fight with this, just make sure serpent sting is always up and regain mana with the viper aspect when needed.

Extremely easy to solo as a level 76 tank geared Frost DK, but the gear rewards are of no use... The gold / XP are nice though. I got 9k XP for the kill (rested, essence of WG).
I used my standard single-target rotation along the lines of IT, PS, BS, BS, DS then RS / FS for runic dump, with a couple of extras thrown in as felt necessary. I summoned a ghoul for good measure and used Icebound Fortitude and Unbreakable Armour for damage control. The lowest my health dropped throughout the fight was 14k / 17k. I expected a bit more of a struggle... Next!

Tamed at level 74. The knockback was a pain in the rear and my small group played owl ping-pong with him at times. I went in with an 80 resto shaman and an 80 feral druid. The druid didn't do much, but the shaman tossed heals while I fought to keep the bird's attention on me.
I could fire off some Distracting Shots to get Alystros to aggro me so I could cast the tame, but I ended up going OOM a few times anyway. I was able to pot and the druid tossed a few Innervates. I even pulled out some of the old +haste drums to try to get a tame through before I hit another knockback, but that interrupt hit me about three times before I finally got the tame off.
I'm never going to get rid of this bird. He took way too much effort to get.

JUST soloed now as level 72 protection warrior. I am in T4/ZA mix gear. Took a while (4-5 shield block rotations) and required a potion, retaliation, shield wall, but NOT last stand. First 2 tries i kept getting stupid lasher adds which do about 600 magic damage every 3-4 seconds which quickly led to my deaths. Third time i went around and killed EVERY SINGLE PLANT before I tried it and it worked :P

Keep Shield Block up, It's helpful. Make sure not to stand in the cloud as it reduces your cast and attack speed. Second make sure you have the area clear, his wing beat pushes you back and could cause potential agro.

Sweet mother of god. This guy is a beast to solo at low levels. I've been able to solo every group quest so far (outside of dungeons of course), and save for a few notable ones in which I had some extra help for parts of them (
The Ring of Blood
,
The Crimson Courier
).
I see that pretty much everyone here soloed this guy at around level 74 (73-75 seems to be the range), and everyone either had a tank (pet), or was a tank (prot).
I died twice trying to solo this guy, and finally killed him the third attempt, at level 72, as a ret paladin. I used everything (divine shield, lay on hands, avenging wrath, potions, trinkets, etc.)
A lot of it comes down to pure luck. I have 11,000 health and 9000 armor (~44% physical damage reduction). If you don't get constant Art of War procs, you will die. It's also very important to move out of the clouds he puts down. If you don't move out, there is more time between your attacks, which means less attacks to proc Art of War off of.
I spammed Judgement of Light/Crusader Strike/Divine Storm and used Flash of Light every time Art of War procced. It's best to use FoL when AoW procs even if you're only down 1000 health, because 1) You can benefit from the HoT from Sheath of Light if it crits and 2) You don't want to get another Art of War proc on top of one another, since that's wasted heals, and you will die.
His melee swing was hitting me anywhere from 1000 to 1400. When he does Talon Strike (~1300), you can really see the spike in damage. I don't know if Talon Strike can crit, but his melee swing can (crit me for 2400).
I was using Seal of Light, +20 Stat Battle Elixir, +350 health guardian elixir, +285 armor scroll (+43 STA is preferable though), devotion aura, and +40 STA food.
One thing you'll notice is that it's really hard to stay topped off as ret. My health was continuously dropping. You'll need to pop bubble at some point and heal to full, and probably use Lay on Hands some time after that as well. It would probably help if I wasn't level 72 and wasn't ret specced, but nonetheless, it's doable.

Solo'd as a lv 75 draenei prot warrior. had to pop my racial heal and enraged regeneration, but other than that it was pretty easy. Just have to keep shield block up. Stuns don't work on him, but if your block value is good enough, you can negate almost all of his damage with a block. I also tried on my arms spec, but I just took way too much damage. The negation from prot is a must. I just used my normal rotation. Use Shield Slam, shockwave and revenge whenever it's up, spam devastate in between CD's.

Sealed and judged Light, with regular buffs (Righteous Defense, Blessing of Sanctuary), plus an Onslaught Elixir and a +20 str scroll. Just used a standard rotation of judge/hammer/holy shield/SoR, without Consecration, Divine Plea up at all times, and Hammer of Wrath mixed in whenever possible after he went below 20%.
Took a long time, but he doesn't hit hard and I was never in danger of dying. I don't think my health ever dropped below 80%, so no cooldowns needed.

Aff lock, just solo'd at 77. Let voidwalker sit on him, kept CoW and Corruption on him, occasionally UA until my threat was too high. Something I did was I kept my voidwalker's back to the mountain wall so the knockback wouldn't move him or myself. Just heal the VW. Might take a little time with only corruption, but at this point in the game, it's nearly impossible to find people on this quest chain unless you are on a high pop realm.

In patch 4.0.6, we now have Spellsteal at level 70. I noticed that the

this buff
granting 30% spell haste.
I stole that and blew everything on this damn bird - Arcane Power, Mirror Image, Improved Mana Gem, trinket, Potion of Wild Magic. I spammed Arcane Blast with the intention of killing him and going OOM. I needed to Evocate just as the clones died, and finished off Alystros with one last Barrage. We both went down. Barely soloed with a 75 BM hunter with Glyph of Mend Pet and all healing increase talents with a Tenacity pet.
She hits quite hard. Just kept Mend Pet up at all times and made sure only to steal aggro to alleviate the damage on my pet so he could get some heals then Feigned Death (She'll kill you pretty fast) so my pet would retake aggro. Eventually my pet did die when she was down to around 3% hp and I only had around 3% as well, got really lucky that I still had Serpent Sting on her and killed her with a melee swing as I was attempting to run away.
Don't do what I did when I tried to solo her at level 73 as MM. Don't go to the lower part of the rock she is on because when she uses Wing Beat and knocks you off, you may get LoS'd from her and your pet. Also on this rock you only have one step between being too close for ranged attacks and falling off.

My Warcraft III knowledge is a little fuzzy after all these years, but if you look at the item used to summon Alystros,
Skytalon Molts
, I believe the icon is the same as the WCIII Sentinel ability that some units could use, such as the Night Elf Huntress. It summoned an owl to reveal an area of the map, and that owl looked almost identical to Alystros.
So yeah... fun fact, I guess. And as of Cataclysm, this guy only has 20k HP.

He does keep his full name after taming, and can only be summoned during
