Stars the Quest Chain for Quel'Delar Epic started in 3.3. Same as Quel'Serrar back in Classic WoW. You'll need to be able to complete Forge of Souls, Pit of Saron, and Halls of Reflection in order to progress and complete this Quest Line. You get to choose one of several weapons upon completing the Quest Line, each different to suit the needs of each role.
This item is a low drop rate from every NPC in the new 5-Man Dungeons The Frozen Halls. This item only drops on Heroic Mode.
Rewards that you can choose from are:
Quel'Delar, Might of the Faithful
Quel'Delar, Ferocity of the Scorned
Quel'Delar, Cunning of the Shadows
Quel'Delar, Lens of the Mind
Cudgel of Furious Justice
Hammer of Purified Flame
Lightborn Spire
Story:
Quel’Delar: The Sister Blade
In ages past the great Dragon Aspects worked alongside the night elves to forge powerful prismatic blades that could be used to thwart any evil that came into the world. They would become known as the blades of Quel’Serrar. One of these blades, which had become lost in time, was recently unearthed again by brave heroes of Azeroth. Now rediscovered, Quel’Serrar is revered once more as a mighty tool of raw power.
Its sister blade, however, has not been seen for many years...
Quel'Delar
The sword known as Quel’Delar was held by the group of kaldorei who would eventully become the high elves, and it was handed down from generation to generation. Most recently Quel’Delar was wielded by the valiant high elven warrior Thalorien Dawnseeker. Thalorien fought tirelessly in the Troll Wars to defend his beloved home of Silvermoon, the Sunwell, and all of Quel’Thalas. When the Scourge swept through the lands during the Third War, Thalorien was among the last lines of defense for the Sunwell. Despite the sword’s power, he was ultimately slain by the overwhelming might of Arthas and his legendary runeblade, Frostmourne. Quel’Delar was thought to be lost forever.
Following the destruction of their homeland, the determined blood elves began to regroup and rebuild. It was during this time that the battle-hardened warrior Lana’thel stumbled upon Quel’Delar, and soon afterward the greatest opportunity to use the blade presented itself: Prince Kael’thas Sunstrider raised an army and combined forces with Illidan Stormrage, who led them north to Icecrown on a mission to destroy the Lich King. Lana’thel readily followed her prince with one thought in mind -- revenge against the Scourge -- but only tragedy awaited her.
Queen of the San’layn
In the icy hills of Northrend, Arthas ultimately defeated Illidan and Kael’thas, and the expedition’s few survivors were scattered across the frozen wastes. One by one the Lich King sought out those who had challenged him, and Lana’thel found herself cornered. Using Quel’Delar, she struck at him with all her might... but Frostmourne’s evil powers overwhelmed her. Through his blade, the Lich King chose Lana’thel to serve him in undeath as queen of the San’layn, a group responsible for overseeing the Scourge’s operations across Azeroth.
Queen Lana’thel eagerly carried out her new duties, but every time she looked at her blade, maddening anger would swell within her as she remembered her former life. She could not afford such distractions, and with a scream that echoed throughout Icecrown, she shattered Quel’Delar and flung the fractured pieces as far as she could.
Now...
The champions of the Alliance and the Horde who confront the Lich King’s armies have but a slim chance of finding the pieces of this fabled blade. If they succeed, the heroes can embark on an epic adventure to re-forge Quel’Delar. They will require the strongest materials and a source of great power to make this shattered blade into the fearsome weapon it once was. Several classes can use Quel’Delar, and the sword can fit several different play styles. For any class that is unable to wield it, however, the Sunreaver blood elves and the Silver Covenant high elves will gladly take this relic of their history in exchange for a usable weapon.
The search begins soon...

This is a rare drop from the new Icecrown 5-man dungeons on heroic difficulty. It is not party loot, so if it drops, only one person in your group can get it.
Good luck.
The weird thing about the quest chain, is that you go to Pit of Saron -> Forge of Souls -> Halls of Reflection, but the progression order for the new Icecrown dungeons is Forge of Souls -> Pit of Saron -> Halls of Reflection.
I suppose most people would have completed all three of them before getting the item to start this quest chain though.

Note. This drops off
ANY
mob in ANY of the
NEW
5 man icecrown dungeons. Not just off the bosses. Its unknown if the hilt will drop in normal, but heroic mode drops have been confirmed. If the hilt only drops off heroic, in theory you could gather a few friends together, farm the trash mobs in the start of one of the instances and then just reset the instance, since you dont get saved until one of the bosses dies. Apparently it is not BoP, which may mean some people will sell the hilt instead of using it. Although it'd be wise to have those who would USE the hilt roll, instead of those who arent and are just going to sell it on the AH for easy gold. May be changed to BoP once 3.3. hits live though.

The quest starting item has a chance of dropping from any of the 3 ICC Heroic (and
ONLY
Heroic) dungeon wings.
Update 1: As of
12/10/09
, the drop rate of the Battered Hilt was lowered in the ICC 5 man Heroics.
Source
:-( It is now an very rare drop from the ICC Heroics
Update 2: As of
12/16/2009
, the drop rate of the Battered Hilt was increased very slightly due to Blizz feeling they nerfed it too much. However... the Hilt can no longer drop from the non elite skeletons in Pit of Saron anymore (Blizz apparently didnt like people farming them for the Hilt)
Source
It is still a really rare drop from the ICC Heroics

Just picked this up from the Heroic Pit of Saron. The entire area before the first boss can be 2 manned, and the little nonelite skeletons DO DROP the Hilt as well. I would highly, highly recommend farming it there.
Blizzard has just released a hotfix that increases the droprate of this item from all Heroic ICC instances, but has removed the chance of it dropping from the nonelite skeletons in Heroic Pit of Saron.

One dropped either from Marwyn in Halls of Reflection or his preceding waves of trash because when the tank looted him it appeared at the same time as the rest of his loot.
Also I tend to believe the 1% or less drop rate after running all 3 instances twice now it's only dropped once.

Is this confirmed? Can you go in, clear trash, go out, reset, clear trash, rinse and repeat untill you get it?

How to get your Quel'delar
There is no magic way of getting this item, there's no secret password that makes it instantly drop.
Though there are ways for you to up your chances in getting it.
The
armory
lists the Battered Hilt to have an "Extremely Low (1% - 2%)" drop chance.
This is from all mobs on heroic difficulty in Forge of Souls, Pit of Saron and Halls of Reflection.
This includes the 10 waves of mobs during the first encounter in Halls of Reflection.
So the way we are going to up our chances in acquiring the Battered Hilt is, simply to, wipe countless times on Falric.
Failing to complete the encounter with Falric will lead to the whole encounter resetting. Thus you have to fight the first 5 waves once more, and as i mentioned earlier theese 5 waves have a chance of dropping the Battered Hilt.
Each wave consists of 3-5 mobs, and a total of 15 mobs for the first 5 waves.
There are 4 possible scenarios to this tactic, a nightmare scenario, two realistic scenarios and ofcourse a dream scenario.
Nightmare scenario
- You never get it, simple as that.
Realistic scenario A
- 1% drop chance which means you'd have to kill 688 mobs for a 99.99% certainty of a drop. This would theoritically mean that you have to wipe and re-do the encounter 46 times per drop. Which totals up to 230 wipes if your whole party wants the hilt.
Realistic scenario B
- 2% drop chance which means you'd have to kill 344 mobs for a 99.99% certainty of a drop. This would theoritically mean that you have to wipe and re-do the encounter 23 times per drop. Which totals up to 115 wipes if your whole party wants the hilt.
Dream scenario
- You all get it on the first clear.
So the best way to acquire/farm for the Battered Hilt is simply to wipe over and over again on Falric allowing you to clear the first 5 waves of mobs again.
Now ofcourse this is going to cost you some money in repair bills, but it's a ton cheaper than buying one off the AH for up to 20,000 gold (yes i've seen them go for that much).
Good luck in finding your Battered Hilt, i have yet to find mine!
P.S. I never ever in here say that any of the scenarios is a gauranteed drop. I've accounted for the different type of scenarios and presented the amount of kills/wipes you would need in order to get a 99.99% certainty of a drop, 99.99% is not 100%
Edit: Don't do math when you're tired. - Thanks Ciar for noticing.

During the questline you have to visit Forge of Souls, Pit of Saron and Halls of Reflection to collect infused saronite among other stuff so keep in mind that you will need help to finish the questline. That being said, it does
not
have to be heroic mode in order to complete the above mentioned.
As of 10/12-2009 droprate has been lowered from 6-8% to 1-2%.

blizzard REALLY dropped the ball, by making this not Bind on Pickup.
as it is getting this to drop is EXTREMELY RARE, it won't be seen very often, but then when it does drops, everyone in the party regardless if they did the quest or not, will roll need on it, and ninja it for the quick money.
it's just not fair, that players who have already completed the quest can still roll for this, thus denying other players their chance to get the weapon, just because they are greedy enough to roll need for sells.
blizz really has to fix this problem, the ideal solution would be to first make it Bind on Pickup, and also, once u've completed the quest-chain be unable to loot the item ever again.
otherwise, this is gonna become another "Tankard'o terror", wich on my realm, everyone rolled need on it, even mages or priests, why?
because since it didn't bind on pickup, tthey wanted easy cash.
this ruins server economy and makes ninjas more motivated to farm these heroics to steal others from the chance to experience what is an amazing quest-chain.
seriously blizz, fix this............

i wish people would stop saying its a waste of money for X amount
for some people with 60k gold stashed away rotting, maybe it is worth 10k so they don't have to bother running the instance 30 times like i have been trying to get this. for others such as myself who never go above 3k gold, it wouldn't be worth that much to buy it.
an item is worth whatever the buyer is willing to pay for it

They are in my servers AH for 14k atm but honestly I can see it selling for no more than 2-3k at most.

Realistic scenario A - 1% drop chance which means you'd have to kill 688 mobs for a 99.99% certainty of a drop. This would mean that you have to wipe and re-do the encounter 28 times per drop. Which totals up to 140 wipes if your whole party wants the hilt.
Realistic scenario B - 2% drop chance which means you'd have to kill 344 mobs for a 99.99% certainty of a drop. This would mean that you have to wipe and re-do the encounter 14 times per drop. Which totals up to 70 wipes if your whole party wants the hilt.
Dream scenario - You all get it on the first clear.
Each time you kill a mob you have x% chance for it to drop x item - kill it once, or kill it 200 times, same day or over 20 of them, it's still a non-cumulative 1% chance. Well intentioned post there, but really - there is NO certainty and your nightmare scenario will not be as rare as ya may think.
I must say though, I do feel sorry for everyone trying to farm this after the droprate nerf - i got home the night of the day the patch went live and within 4 hours i had my mace lol. anyways If ya get it, ya get it and grats - if ya dont, ya dont, you'll get a decent wep here somewhere anywhere - if no weps that drop here are an upgrade then try focus on raiding. Good luck tho.

As a prot paladin, I got this off the skeletal slaves in Pit of Saron solo. I did it earlier that day with a PuG but we left most skellie groups up so I would kill the skellies, run out and come back to loot (ignoring the necromancer). If the necromancer is not killed, the skellies respawn soon after so you can repeat this throughout the day.

I see why it's called PoS :-/
*Edit: 8 times on top of running every ICC heroic every day since they came out. Have yet to see a hilt drop ANYWHERE.

Thanks for a write up, even if the math ends up being off, I've been farming this item like mad, doing each heroic every day then running randoms every 15 mins trying to get them again, and tangible numbers being attached gives me hope I may actually see the hilt drop some day.
I did find a more efficient way though, according to wowarmory, even the skeletal slaves that follow around the yellow robed cultists have the same chance of dropping the item as any other in the new heroics.
There are 30 of these skeletal slaves in the pit of saron, and I can get too, and solo each pack of 6. Starting at reset today I'm going to kill these 5 packs of 6 mobs 22 times, and see if I can figure out if your math is correct. Operation Hilt begins in 38 minutes, heh. :(

I can easily 1 man all the skeletons @ pit of saron as a hunter. Wyvern sting on the deathwish guys,... misdirect to my gorilla, multishot the skeletons, aoe them down, dismiss pet, feign death and repeat on all other groups. You get pretty good gold as well. Even got a jewelcrafting daily Q giving me 1 JC token. Havent seen hilt drop yet, but the instance resets instantly, so I can keep doing this all day long.

I am disgusted that a quest item such as this, which was touted as being available for everyone, now has a lower dropping chance than legendaries (it's low....under 1%).
You're more likely to find a good weapon running the raids. This sucks, because I really wanted to do the quests this item begins but I'm not dropping 20k for one.

GUIDE
-----
Step 1)
Get the battered hilt, random trash mob drop in icecrown 5mans.
Step 2)
Turn it in to an npc in icecrown, just south of the argent tournament grounds.
Step 3)
Starts quest "What The Dragons Know" - sends you to Krasus at the top of the Wyrmrest Temple, you have to talk to the npc at the top before the quest completes. Then you turn it in to Magister Hathorel inside your Horde/Alliance area in Dalaran.
Step 4)
NPC sends you to underbelly and find a Silver Covenant agent, and kill him and search the body for Orders. The underbelly is the dalaran sewers. I located the agent standing in front of the sewers innkeeper. Upon leaving the sewers another agent ambushed me and netted me down.
Step 5)
Turned in orders back at the NPC you got this quest from; The next part hsa you get a Borrowed Tabard from Shandy Glossgleam. He is located on the balcony above the Threads of Fate shop. The problem is only one person can use him at a time, you can talk to him when he is free and start a mini-event to help him do his laundry. Simply stand back and click the item he calls out, pants/shirt/unmentionables/water. When you do about 10 things for his laundry list, he will drop a bag next to the tub containing the tabard you need.
Step 6)
Return with the tabard to the npc in your horde/alliance inn. You now become disguised from 5 MINUTES From accepting the quest.
Step 7)
You have 5 minutes with the disguise (if it wears off, the npc can renew it). As a horde I had to go to the silver enclaive and talk to an npc, the tabard kept the guards from teleporting me out. Talk to the npc att the top and get the book you need, then get out before the disguise wears off. Sadly this is the most epic disguise you might ever wear as a horde, and its only for 5 minutes...
Step 8)
With the book of blades in hand, go back to your npc at the inn. Now the next pat has you deliver the book to Myraion Sunblade. He is at Quel'Delar's Rest, south of the Argent Tournament grounds where this all began.
Step 9)
Turn it in and enjoy the show! (Make sure your sound is on!) - The Blood-Queen Lana'thel finally shows herself.
Step 10)
You are now on Reforging The Sword: You now must get 5 Infused Saronite Bars from the Pit of Saron 5man in Icecrown Citadel. You must gather bars and capture the forgemaster's hammer, then bring them to the forgemaster's anvil to reforge the sword. The bars are located all over near the slaves, there are enough of them around the entrance where even after you cleared the instance you can go back and grab them. The hammer drops off the giant forgemaster, and you can forge your sword at the anvils all around him. Go outside the instance and turnin the quest at the npc outside the icecrown 5mans, he is also there.
Step 11)
Next you go to the Forge of Souls, go to the very end at the last boss, kill him, and forge your sword. That simple. Exit forge of souls, turnin quest again at the npc outside the 5mans. Now into the halls of reflection.
Step 12)
This is it, the big shabang. Use your sword at the beginning of the instance, Uther The Lightbringer will be waiting and start screaming at you for the mistake your making. Defeat the essence of the sword when it attacks you, then loot it. Zone out and turn it in again.
Step 13)
Head to sunwell aisle, talk to the npc at the entrance to the plateau. He will tell you to go get your blessing to use the weapon. Head to the south end of the Dead Scar on the isle of Quel'Danas, and then head up into the scar about 50 yards. Click the corpse, enjoy the speech, then DEFEND HIM. You must keep the npc alive. You CAN buff and heal him, even bandage him. Two waves of level 80 adds spawn, their easy to aoe and let him tank/aoe. Then a 3rd wave of three 18k hp spiders spawn, take them out. Finally the boss standing nearby watching, becomes attackable. Just blow all cooldowns and nuke him, hes an elite with 37k hp, easily soloed.
Step 14)
Follow your map, back to the npc at the entrance of the sunwell plateau and turnin the quest after you have the ghost's blessing.
Step 15)
Turnin your quest, then grab the next. Now your ready to win the game. Talk to the warden at the sunwell entrance to have him personally enter and escort you in. You are now in one of the coolest rooms in any dungeon int he game! Travel down the hill through the Shrine of the Eclipse and to the bottom. Once you are at the bottom, stand next to teh beam of the sunwell, and use your blade. Your sword will be restored and will appear as a lootable item around one of the sides of the sunwell. During the process, one of the guards might become a little.. scared.. and attack you, but you'll remain relatively unharmed. (NOTE: Turn on your game music, it gets pretty epic).
Step 16)
Take the nearby portal in that room to dalaran with your newfound weapon. Well, you don't have to, but you need to go back to ice crown. Go back to the rest just south of the argent tournament grounds.
Step 17)
Your done! Grab the quest and head to dalaran and get your newfound weapon! CONGRATULATIONS! You win the internet!

MM Hunter
farming this item in PoS is pretty easy. MM specced with good Volley damage you can easily down 5 patrols (30 skeletons total) and reset the instance within the 60 minutes limit (maximum 5 resets per hour). With Feign Death, Readiness, Barrage, traps, ... you don't even need your pet to pull aggro. Dismiss your companion (no need to waste time healing/feeding him... and why make him sad?) and repeat:
lay down a
Snake Trap
at your feet (great aggro distraciton)
Freezing Arrow
on caster
chain-
Volley
2-4 times as needed (you can easily tank skeletons, no pet needed)
dismiss caster with
Feign Death
(Deterrence and/or Readiness if it fails)
Move across patrols/mobs using Deterrence (twice if you need 10 seconds to move far) and find a safe spot to Feign Death and prepare your next trap.
Occasional drink/food drops will be more than enough to keep you at full health/mana. There are 5 patrols (1 static, 4 moving around). The static one is cake. Others need a little planning (by "little" I mean you just have to cast your trap in the correct position). Watch out for other patrols/adds to avoid annoying aggro. After your first 2-3 runs you will feel at home.
That makes 30*5 = 150 kills per hour. I wont make math assumptions but that's fairly good if you're not extremely unlucky (it happens in WoW, as well as being lucky and get it on 1st kill).
Good drops: greens, good bop-epics (worth 22G @ vendor), some blues (boe), useless trash that after 1 hour make some gold. Each skeleton will drop decent money too... so all in all it's a nice farming. And if the Battered thing drops... it will be easy gold (unless you need it).

Set to heroic 5man and begin Pit of Saron.
Charge necromancer from the right ramp, use shield bash, concussion blow, heroic throw, and spell reflect to counter shadow bolt. Pick up all loots. Run your tail after silencing the necromancer.
You can find another slaves pack around the instance. I was able to successfully pull two from the right and 1 from the left. I got my hilt from the left necromancer on the ramp.
I did this for about about 30 mins only, and killed about 35 slaves total.
GOOD luck and do talk in general chat.

To any hopeful warriors out there, I can tell you that with a prot spec, you can easily handle killing the Necrolytes. Just reflect back any Shadow bolts, but make sure you bash their Conversion Beam the instant they use it, hopefully before it ticks once for ~3k damage. If they use Shadow bolt before reflect is back up, then stun them with Shockwave/Concussive blow. You even have the silence effect with Heroic throw to fall back on, but I never had to. If you just keep reflecting and bashing, you can easily win with ~50% health left or more. Just be sure to bring along a few stacks of food to heal with. I will note however that this is with mostly 232 gear. Your milage may vary with less gear.
Doing this, I'm able to handle the 2 Necrolytes at the start, the one skeleton pack on the left, and 3 more packs on the right. I don't dare try to ninja and weave in any deeper for more packs. But I'm able to solo them all day until the cows come home. Just have to hope that the hilt can still drop, that's all.

Got it today after about 8-9 hours of farming non-elite skeleton adds. Got 11 BoP epics and one hilt.
Started the farm with my shadow priest by casting shackle undead on the elites and mind searing the trash but soon switched to my hunter for the feign death. Because of it I did not have to run outside all the time anymore. Plus as surv hunter you have both freezing arrow and wyvern sting at your disposal and they both work tremendously to CC the elites.
During the farm I also got about 9,5 stacks of infinite dust, 4 stacks of greater cosmic essence, about 25 stacks of frostweave cloth and about 1k gold from loot and trash sold to vendor. All things taken in considaration i would defenetly say it was a rewarding 8-9 hours! ;)
Happy hunting! /Penti

According to a blue post in the forums at
http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=21726258628&sid=1
Blizzard will be increasing the drop rate of Battered Hilts in the Heroic 5-man ICC instances as well as removing the chance for Skeletal Slaves to drop BOP epics.

Quoted from GM Zarhym
"Based on feedback we’ve been provided by players, we’d like to make you aware of a couple of changes we are applying to Icecrown Citadel: The Frozen Halls via in-game fixes. Firstly, we are increasing the drop rate of the Battered Hilt in all three wings of this Heroic five-player dungeon. We have seen a great deal of discussion about this item’s chance of dropping since the release of patch 3.3.0 and agree that it is currently too low. As a result, players should find greater accessibility to this item while running these dungeons, or while trading with other players who have it.
In light of this change, we are also removing the chance for the Battered Hilt or any other epic item to drop from the Skeletal Slaves in the Pit of Saron. The need to “farm” these creatures for the Battered Hilt should be reduced by our first in-game fix and will no longer result in a chance for epic loot or Battered Hilts.
You’re welcome to discuss these changes in this thread and provide us with any additional feedback you may have. Please refrain from creating additional threads about these in-game fixes at this time."
IE stop spending time trying for farm the skeleton slaves and just run the dungeons.

After the patch and the "improved" drop rate, I have read exactly one report of a hilt dropping and that was right here in Kinni's post. It's only one day, I know, but a "substantial increase" to the drop rate, which is how Zarhym described it on the US forum, should have been noticable across a single server's players, let alone the entirety of the US and EU players.
I realize some of these DID drop yesterday as well as every day since this drop rate was initially "corrected". Just not many. While the improvement may have been "substantial" it's still too low. Zarhym also points out the players shouldn't be angry that they don't have the item after it's only been dropping for 8 days. I don't think that's the issue. The problem is that in 8 days of hardcore play people have made ZERO progress toward it. Like many, I have not even seen it drop, and I did all three heroics every day except the first.
It's just far too luck-based at the moment, especially considering the special preview they did for it. Why would they even waste the effort to create a preview page and include it as a key element to the patch if it was intended to be something that hardly ever drops? Are we going to get a preview page for the hyacinth macaw too?
Also, I have no issue with it being tradeable and therefore sellable, since that allows people to get it more easily via trade. If it remains this rare that will ultimately not work since the price will always be far too high anyway, but otherwise this does work fine. What I don't agree with, however, is that this quest starting item is treated differently than all the other quest starting items in the game. It should NOT be lootable when you are on or have completed the quest it offers. So if you want to sell them, never do the quest. You chose between being a merchant and being a Que'Delar wielder. Also, it should be unique. There's no reason you ever need two of these in your inventory at the same time. Should two ever drop in one run, that just encourages people to roll on both.
I think Blizzard still needs to make some adjustments to this, to make it live up to the availability that the previews and quest chain suggested it would have. I don't mind it being rare, but I want to be able to work toward it with an actual finish line in sight (faction grind, emblem cost, etc). I don't think that's too much to ask for. Right now it's just a miniscule random chance followed by another when all five players roll on it. Not really acceptable in it's current form.
By the way, my AH still only had one available the past two days for 30k starting bid/buyout.
Edit: TWO reports of a hilt dropping. Grats Samskara! You posted as I was typing mine.

I have been doing something similar only with PoS and FoS. We, a group of 5, would farm all / most trash until the first boss and then reset it. I've been doing this since they "increased" the drop chance of the hilt and removed the drop from the non-elite skeletons.
This is the result of the farming so far:
Number of trash mobs:
- PoS till boss 1: 30
- PoS total: 62
- FoS till boss 1: 28
- FoS total: 32
- HoR total: 40
I've run these instances:
- PoS till boss 1: 19
- PoS full clear: 2
- FoS till boss 1: 14
- FoS full clear: 2
- HoR full clear: 2
That's a total of about 1200 mobs killed which can all drop the hilt.
Number of hilt drops: zero
.
If these numbers are any indication, it means you'll have to do about 20 full PoS clears to get to 1200 mobs killed. 20 full clears for the chance of 1 hilt dropping. 20 runs with 4 other people who will all be rolling on it. That's a 100 full PoS clears to get everyone in that group 1 hilt, unless the drop chance is even lower of course. Except that everyone will be rolling on every hilt drop so the chance is even smaller to get it.

You both are partly right and partly wrong.
You are correct that the "Odds" do not change regardless of how many mobs you kill. What changes is the "Probability".
The two of you are using the ambiguous term 'chances' interchangably and that is where the confusion is stemming from. Allow me to explain:
Odds are defined as the 'chances for' versus 'chances against'
In the 6 sided die examples the odds of rolling a '2' are 1:5
If the die has only two sides (and therefore 2 numbers) the odds would be 1:1
Probability, on the other hand is defined as the ratio of 'chances for' divided by 'total chances'. So in our 2 sided die example, if you roll it one time you have one chance for out of 2 possible chances or 1/2 = 0.5 = 50%
A common mistake is to think that if you rolled a mythical two-sided die twice you would then have a 100% probability. That's not true.
The point the first poster was making (correctly I might add) is that to increase your likelihood of getting the drop you could farm more mobs. The reason for the backwards math is because of this:
If I have a deck of cards (52) and you are allowed to choose one card the probability of choosing the Ace of Spades is 1 out of 52 or 1.92%. If you choose a second card, the probability that you now choose the Ace of Hearts is 1 out of 51 or 1.96%. BUT...the probability of choosing the Ace of Spades the first time followed by the Ace of hearts immeadietly after is .0192 x .0196 = .00037 or 0.04%.
We can apply this in the battered hilt drop in the same way:
Our "total chances" does not change but our "chances for" increases if we loot more mobs. Farming the instance does not increase the size of our selection pool from which we want the hilt to drop. That remains the same. It's essentially a 100 card deck and we wish to select one unique card from it. If we fail to select the right card (the hilt) the deck is reshuffled and we choose a single card again.
The probability of NOT seeing the hilt drop (assuming 1% drop rate) is 99% for each mob. If you kill 1 mob there is a 99% probability it will NOT DROP. If you kill two mobs it is 0.99 x 0.99 = 0.9801. There is a 98% probability the hilt will NOT DROP after killing two mobs. By using this formula you can estimate the probability of looting 'N' number of mobs and NOT seeing it drop. P = ^ n
After 1 mob: 0.99 ^ 1 = 99% probability it doesnt drop
After 50 mobs: 0.99 ^ 50 = 60.5% probability it doesn't drop
After 375 mobs: 0.99 ^ 375 = 2.3% probability it doesn't drop
After 688 mobs: 0.99 ^ 688 = 0.1% probability it doesn't drop
The ODDS of it dropping are always the same. The probability of seeing it drop increases if you loot more mobs.
Past results do not influence future results, but PROBABILITY increases as you increase the number of samples taken.

Ok, just some basic statistics to get a general feel of how long it will take to see one of these drop.
Assumptions:
1) Player runs all 3 Icecrown heroics every day and kills every trash mob once. Total mobs killed is (PoS total 62 + FoS total 32 + HoR total: 40) = 134.
2) Drop rate is either 0.1% or 0.2%, will calculate for both.
3) Everyone in group rolls need, so 1 in 5 chance of winning hilt if it drops.
===0.1% drop rate===
50% of players will see 1 drop by 693 mobs, or roughly 5 days of running all IC heroics.
90% of players will see 1 drop by 2302 mobs, or roughly 17 days of running all IC heroics.
99% of players will see 1 drop by 4602 mobs, or roughly 34 days of running all IC heroics.
99.9% of players will see 1 drop by 6904 mobs or roughly 51 days of running all IC heroics.
On average, 1 in 5 chance to win the roll, so multiply those times above by 5 to get the average length of time to win. So on average (50% percentile) it will take 25 days of running all IC heroics (75 total heroics) to win a hilt. Now lets look at the 0.2% drop rate case.
===0.2% drop rate===
50% of players will see 1 drop by 346 mobs, or roughly 2.5 days of running all IC heroics.
90% of players will see 1 drop by 1150 mobs, or roughly 8.5 days of running all IC heroics.
99% of players will see 1 drop by 2300 mobs, or roughly 17 days of running all IC heroics.
99.9% of players will see 1 drop by 3451 mobs or roughly 25.5 days of running all IC heroics.
On average, 1 in 5 chance to win the roll, so multiply those times above by 5 to get the average length of time to win. So on average (50% percentile) it will take 12.5 days of running all IC heroics (37.5 total heroics) to win a hilt.

Thanks for showing us the calculations. Honestly though, I still think this is too rare for an item that was presented the way this one was (web preview, opinion poll, focused testing on PTR for quest chain, etc). The rate that mobs in these instances are killed will only go down as time goes on, meaning less hilts entering the world. They killing of mobs in these instances is at an all time high right now, since they're brand new. Every day less will be killed though, as people that care nothing for the hilt move on after getting the upgrades/achievements that they want from FH zones.
Even if you think these rates are acceptable, however, they're based on the assumptions that you set up at the start. Your assumption on both drop rates is likely wrong. I say this because people have killed many more mobs than even your 0.1%'s 99.9% of players bracket. Does that mean they could have been in the 0.1 group? Sure, I guess it could, but multiple players? For those interested in wading into a super-sized post on the General WoW forum, you can look here for reports by two players on their massive trash farming since the "increased" drop rate:
http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=21726258628&sid=1
Beware, that thread is long, contains crying from both the "I don't have one" and the "I have one and also have serious unique-snowflake syndrome" crowds, but it also contains accounts that people are just not seeing it at all, despite efforts that are above and beyond what even the most hardcore WoW players would put in. One player there has farmed 17,000 mobs as I write this (according to their own accounts), has bought 2 hilts off the AH with trash drop proceeds, but has yet to see ONE drop. I don't have enough experience with the math to say with any authority, but I can speculate that the drop rate is lower than 0.1%, even after the "substantial increase" (and I will always put that in quotes because that was what Blizzard stated and it's laughable).
In my opinion Blizzard still has a problem here and needs to address it. They shouldn't have blown the trumpets to preview this item if it was always intended to be another super simian sphere or hyacinth macaw. And they probably shouldn't have wasted resources to add a quest chain and unique arts assets for something that will be rarer than some legendary weapons. I don't think that they ever intended it to be this rare until the patch went live or just afterwards when the initial nerf hit. This was by all appearances intended to be something far more common than the current stated Blizzard stance. It should return to that initial vision.

If you are trying to "farm" the hilt forget about it, its a completely waste of time.
The dropchance seems to bei ridicolous low. Farmed the whole trash in PoS with a friend, and after around 30 hours havent seen a single hilt dropped.
If you want to sell the hilt, better do random Heroics for Triumph Badges and sell the Crusader Orbs to the AH.
For example, a Guildm8 did HoR and the 5 trash waves in front of the first boss dropped 2 hilts like 3 days before. So you need to be extremely lucky to even see it drop.
Good Luck to you all getting 1 hilt.

I still farm this solo on my Prot Paladin, even after all the nerfs and (buff) to the drop rate. I can clear all the trash solo... it simply requires free time and patience of steel. Some of the mobs require your attention to interrupt, kite, or use a defensive cooldown.
I've done full clears and the hilt has not dropped yet. Each time I start farming it solo, I realize it's a waste of time and instead, get a group going.

here my kill recount so far:

Actually, priest needs it just as much as you do, since they can't use sword they get a mace instead, and what they do with it is their business, not yours. It is supposed to be a very contested item, if you win it you either sell it or use it, if you got another one you might aswell use it on your alt or something. You see alt use and selling the hilt has about same value, if you really need it for q, tough luck if you lose it. Also ninja aka. taking an item which has absolutly no use for you but to vendor it, the hilt can be sent to a friend or alt or it can be sold at AH. so you can't 'Ninja* the hilt

Here's an actual piece of advice: Do the quest chain in a group of your friends.
The quest chain for this item is
great
if you love lore. It contains a new NPC model. The entire Sunwell island is phased for you. You get to go visit it the Sunwell itself, and see what happened after the raid there. There is new voice dialog recorded entirely for these quests.
The item is rare enough that most people won't get to see and hear this goodness. Characters without the hilt won't see the phased stuff, but give your friends a chance to experience at least some of it.
The weapon you get at the end is nice. The juicy lore you get is even better.
You have to kill a few five-man bosses to get it done. You might as well take your friends to do it.

Wasn't to sure what this item was, after a little digging around WoWhead.com thought it would be wiser to sell the item than proceed with the quest chain; especially since I was a druid and the Pal/DK/War's seem to go nuts over this thing. Therefore I opted to sell it, and sold it for 8k on my server. I'm a casual player and don't really spend a lot of time on WoW so that's why I opted to sell it. So note to the casual/laid back players: This thing can get you one of a couple things, instant epic flying, or a lot of gear out of the AH. I got both fortunetly. Hope this helps! =D

Guys, I've read a lot of complaints about the Hilt because it's not BoP. But in my opinion it just opens more ways to get it.
Needing on an epic sword because you can vendor it for 14G is just greedy. But I find needing on the Hilt to sell it not that greedy. It's a lot of gold. How would you know that the mage (or any other class) who won the roll is going to do the quest or is going to sell it? Some would do the quest and get the weapon, some don't care about the quest or weapon and just want the money. They would buy crafted items for it or whatever, which is also an upgrade!
Don't just let your opinion be biased by your own greedy goals. If you really want this item focus on earning 15K gold, and just buy the Hilt. It would be quicker that way, and you have another goal to dream about, what else do you want? It's already too easy as it is right now.
It's like the old frozen orbs, everybody would need on it even if they didn't have a crafting profession or needed anything to be crafted from it.

Went into my first heroic run of the new ICC 5-mans today. And it is for sure all about luck. Was hoping to maybe see one drop out of the 3 dungeons. Actually got to see 2 drop in the same run. FoS was the place, one dropped off of the first skellys that guards the entrance. Then another one dropped off of that last skellys before you get to the boss. My favorite part is that a %^&*!@ bag DK rolled on both and won both. Figured common sense and decency would tell most people to pass on the second as to give someone else a shot at one,. But I forget that a large percent of the people that play this game are just worthless morons.
So ya my first experience with the hilts was negative but was crazy to see two drop in the same run.
In case anyone wants to know who the @#$%^& bag was here ya go.

I just did some interesting math, taking the top 10 percentage of drops and the lowest 10 percentage of drops from the "Dropped By" table on WowHead.
So, the WowHead percentage of the weapon dropping is .000729, roughly.
This means out of 378445 mobs killed, it dropped 276 times.
I also calculated for one Hilt to drop, you'd expect to kill about 1400 mobs.
An average run of heroic PoS has the party kill about 50 mobs, including the bosses.
So, you'd have to run PoS 28 times to
expect
to see a Hilt drop.
(Of course I've run these instances more times than that and never seen the Hilt drop for me, ever.)
Expecting the Hilt to drop does not mean that it will. It is only the average chance, sadly.

Also I prefer Mainhand/Offhand over Staff
One of the maces rewarded here is absolutely BiS for my Disc Priest, but I just can't afford it and mind me and my luck on drops.
I mean, okay, it's only a little bit better than the two weapons that can drop there, but it still IS

This dropped in H PoS on my hunter... I rolled on it and I lost. Everyone got mad at me for JUST rolling on it. They kept saying I'm a hunter and I don't use melee weapons and kept getting even more angrier at me until they kicked me ): I do not know if I was the only one who was kicked or just the first one but I don't see why hunters can't roll on this and why you should get kicked for just rolling on something.
I don't know if there's a rule that hunters really can't roll on this or they were just greedy little !@#$ers.

well given that this is a BOE item that leads to an epic ilvl 251 melee or caster weapon, wich for hunters is mainly a stick with stats, you rolling on this hilt is comparable to a rogue or warrior rolling on a BOE epic dps bow. (yes they can use the stats on it or shoot a bit with it when they really cant melee, but mainly its a waste of potential if a hunter could have used it). I think you would be annoyed there too if that bow was an upgrade for you.
Many a hunter winning this would be tempted not to do the quest chain but to either mail it to an alt or put it up for sale.
The others in your group probably thought you planned to do the latter , that coupled with the extremely low drop chance(in over 40 full runs of heroic ice hall instances I have seen it drop once) and I can certainly understand the annoyance of the rest of your group.

This thing seems to be a myth tbh. Been doing all of the three instances almost every day since they were released and I'm yet to see it even drop. Didnt even see it drop 3.3 patch day when it was supposed to be very common. Also farmed the small skeletons for countless hours when it was still on their loottable. Let alone when it finally drops I will most likely lose the roll like always. :)
A lot easier to get weapon equal to this or better is to simply do ICC pugs or 1800 arena rating. Though I want to do the quest chain. :S

I've seen them on the AH now for around 10k-13k.. usually only one or two are listed at one time.
Using the random que and ending up running the 5mans in ICC i have never seen one drop.. Even when, the few times it happened, we agreed for a full clear. Also being in a grp of 5 and doing full clears on all, I have never seen it drop. I have seen one person in my guild that has it, and that is the only one he ever saw drop (H PoS). I can understand blizz making this a very rare random drop.. but, I would like to see the drop rate increased slightly. (This is my frustration wishing it..)

Perhaps the gold he gained from selling it would allow him to buy another substantial upgrade? He could get 6 or 7 Primordial Saronites with the money and use that to craft some 264 ICC items. Perhaps he will give it to his alternate character. Maybe he needs it for shadow spec. Just because you can use something immediately and are unable to see how the hilt is valuable to almost anyone else, regardless of what weapon they are weilding, doesn't make him selfish. In fact, with all the "I's" and "me's" you use, I would say it is you being selfish and feeling entitled to it.
TL;DR? Stop the QQ. Get over it. You lost the roll on a BOE epic that everyone has reason to roll on.

Yes, although that is true, and you should never "expect" it to happen, the probability of it not dropping over a set amount of time decreases exponentially. It is true that you will have a (according to wow armory) 1/100 to 2/100 chance of this dropping from any "gold dragon elite" in the Heroic instances (skeletons were removed a long time ago). It is true that this
chance
does not change no matter how many you kill (Blizzard does not just reward you for tenacity (bad joke on a BC trinket)). It is not true, however, that the
probability
of this dropping based on the amount of "gold dragon elites" you kill stays the same. let's use wowarmory's lowest probability of 1% (.99). you kill 1 "gde" and the
chance
of this dropping is 1/100, the
probability
of this not happening after 1 kill is .99. you kill 2 gde:
chance
: 1/100 on the first, 1/100 on the second.
probability
is now .9801 of this not happening (~2%) 3: 1% chance, .970299 probability of not. The
chance
of this battered hilt dropping for you is and will always be 1%. The
probability
of this not happening for you is .99^x, where x is the number of potential drops (20 "gde's" killed=0.817906938
probability
. (~82%). As we can see, the more "gde's" you kill within these 3 Heroic instances, the more you lower the
probability
that this will never happen. Remember, people, Blizz uses a Random Number Generator to determine your drops, procs, and damage (within the damage range). Sometimes you will be "screwed by the RNG", sometimes you will get 1 hilt on every single kill.
tl;dr: 5 lock-outs per dungeon per hour, 10 total for H PoS and H FoS : Chance is and will always be /100. Assuming you only kill 2 mobs in each (but you'll probably do more) you'll have a .817906938 probability not to get it (~.18 probability to get it)
still tl;dr:
Kill 193-458 skeletons (2%-1% drop chance)
, hope not to get screwed by RNG, for a ~99% probability to get this. At 20/hour, you'll probably have at least 1 in 23 hours.
Heck, if you're really lucky, you could get 458! (assuming they could only drop 1...hmmm...)
Just a note, Going as a team with a tank AND a DPS will speed this up, assuming the tank does as much DPS as they can while holding aggro, and the DPS does as much as they can. 132k(Soulguard Watchman)/264k(Wrathbone Laborer) health @ 5,000 combined dps should go down in 27 seconds/53 seconds (assuming a 1.8k dps tank and 3.2k dps dpser just for distinction. the more dps you bring, the faster your kills)

I was able to solo farm this off the heroic trash mobs in t9 tanking gear using the 28/0/43 spec by Raegwyn.
The mobs take a little bit of work but never in any real danger of dying as the self heal is 15% and Imp Rune Tap really helps with that. Got it off my first mob that I killed on my first day of farming, talk about lucky.

I remember when I had come on a few days after the patch for the ICC 5 mans had been released. I got to PoS normal and within about 5 minutes I saw two Battered Hilt's drop, i won the first one and didn't roll on the second because i thought it was a common item where it'd be unfair to not let other people have a chance at it... then later that day i saw people selling it for over 9k gold resulting in my realisation that i had missed out on a 20% chance of getting 9k gold.
Sad panda once i found out. Oh and someone in the instance tried to give me 50g for it and i truly had no idea of its worth, i'm kinda glad i kept it though y'know! Just shows that people will do what they can to con you out of anything where you don't know its worth. Lovely WoW players never read

one thing to note:
If you've just run Pit of Saron, Forge of Souls and Halls of Reflection consecutively so you can complete the quest steps leading you to the phased MGT, DO NOT WALK BACKWARDS.
It will most likely lock you out.

Honestly, am I the only person who's F*cking irritated about the fact that there's no tank weapon from this quest chain? I mean, they've f*cked me with shields since naxx, and now they're f*cking me with swords too? I want to be able to get competitive loot to actually start raiding and it's very f*cking irritating that the best i can do is a 232 wep and a 219 shield before raids. i mean, srsly blizz, couldn't have made a tanking mace or sword, or *god* *F*C*K*I*N*G forbid a weapon/shield from triumph? rly? grr.
On another note, let's be blizz and design dual spec and then design a 251 wep where you have to choose between specs. Good call. D*cks.

You can try to farm this hilt but it is basically all gonna come down to luck. I personally have never bothered to even try to farm the hilt. yet the other day when i was running HoR for my daily heroic for the frosts, it dropped from one of the phantom mages. I also won the roll and sold the hilt later for 11.5k. im a tank so i couldn't use the rewards anyways. even if i could, i would never pay 8-12k for a 251 item. not even close to worth it in my opinion. good luck to anyone who is going to farm this sword though. the chances are highly against you and there is probably no point but you can still try.

Ok
Using the drop counts here on wowhead, which keeping in mind are just a random sample, I devised a simple probability scale for these Forge of Souls "half runs".
6 Soulguard Watchman (0.088%) - 0.531%
5 Soulguard Adept (0.074%) - 0.368%
6 Soulguard Reaper (0.061%) - 0.364%
5 Soulguard Bonecaster (0.064%) - 0.321%
6 Soulguard Animator (0.065%) - 0.389%
3 Soul Horror (0.062%) - 0.185%
31 Total (2.157%)
So, theoretically, if you kill all 31 mobs before Bronjahm, there is a 2.157% chance that it will drop, meaning you will need to do approximately 46 runs for a hilt to drop, in the best case scenario that is.
I have been following this method for a couple days now, doing maybe 20-30 runs per day, and have yet to see one.
I have a feeling my math is horribly flawed, but I at least wanted to contribute to something I have been investing so much of my time into.
ok i got a few questions How the *!@# can you run 20-30 HCs a day that'l be like 10x Fos 10xPoS 10HoR HC either youl be verylucky getting those in random Queue or youre lieing :P

It's too bad that the item in and of itself ain't that good nowadays, it's a minor upgrade compared to Seethe at best, and I couldn't warrant completing the quest when I could get 8k gold out of it, which will be put to good use come Cata. The sword looks awesome though, so there is that :p

Pit of Saron seems to be the best for farming this. You can clear all of the trash in the instance without much problems. Here's how I handle them as L85 destro lock item level 360ish.
You can tank
Deathwhisper Necrolyte
,
Wrathbone Laborer
and
Plagueborn Horror
, they won't drop you below 70-80% health.
On the pulls with 4 mobs, keep
Deathwhisper Torturer
feared trough the fight, let pet handle one of the
Hungering Ghoul
while you nuke the other one, finish off first ghoul and kill
Deathwhisper Shadowcaster
. It's better to kill the ghouls first as they will regenerate health and casters won't do much damage trough the Nether Ward. You can probably skip the fear part if you are feeling bold, but I noticed that having 3 melee pouncing on me plus the caster was bringing me dangerously close to dying.
Pulls with the patrolling drakes can be a bit tricky. First fear
Ymirjar Skycaller
off the drake and nuke
Iceborn Proto-Drake
. Have pet on passive and use combination of single hit spells, like Chaos Bolt or Incinerate and Fear. Do not use dots as they may break fear - basically you don't want him in melee range - stay as far away as you can. If he hits you with
Glacial Strike
you are pretty much dead - it will tick for about 15k damage every 3 sec and it won't stop until you are at 100% health or dead. If you are lucky you can use healthstone after first tick which should heal you up to full and remove the debuff, but best to slowly wear him down. It will take about a minute or so with
Glyph of Fear
because off the cooldown, but if you are at max range you can hit him twice before applying new fear (depending on your haste). Seems like he can use Glacial Strike even during the blade whirlwind when he's disarmed - not sure if it's intentional or a bug but be aware.
If you clear the whole place you get 45 mobs which can drop the hilt (13 Laborers, 7 Necrolytes, 5 Horrors, 4 pulls of 4 mobs and 2 drakes with Skycallers), the run takes about 30min and gives 150-200g in loot and vendor trash. Good luck.

Recently started farming for this again to break my 13k achievement point mark.
Should have picked it up back in the days as nowadays it's just hardly/never on AH, but I already had a better weapon back then so I never paid too much attention to it.
It took me 43 runs in Pit of Saron and it eventually dropped off a
亡语者侍僧
. The quest chain after that was very easy to solo as a 378 ilvl fury warrior.
For all you guys hunting, it'll drop eventually, keep it up, the quest chain is also well worth it, imo.

Been trying to get this as well, hoping I can use it for transmogrification next patch.
I lost count at how many runs tho, close to 15 maybe. Since then I've seen 4 fist weapon drops and 2 bracers, but no hilt yet. On a daily basis, usually I run a full Forge of Souls, a full Halls of Reflection, and maybe 2 or 3 Pit of Saron trash runs, and end it with a full run.
I feel like the mobs I'm not killing might be carrying it cause I remember reading somewhere that the loot tables for all the mobs are decided when you enter the instance. If that's the case then there's that one chance where that that Geist Ambusher might have it, and I ended up skipping it. I don't know if that's the case, if anyone has any more info let me know.

Let's comment before getting one, even if I don't like it, lol.
I've been farming for over one week too, in all the 3 heroic dungeons, but rarely in HoR.
Especially in forge of souls, as I can kill the 31 mobs in 10 minutes, and considering the time to go out and reset I can do all in 15 mins, therefore I can do 4 runs each hour.
Farmed a bit even the pits of saron, but I need like 25 mins for a full clear, and I get like 40 mobs, so in my opinion, or at least for my warrior, forge of souls seems better.
Furthermore, in case someone doesn't know that, you can easily go after bronjham, the first boss, by passing on the extreme left of the room, he won't aggro, did it like 10 times and he never attacked me.
There are like 9 more mobs after that, but it seems the ones who have 264k hp in the end have a better drop rate.
Farmed for 2-3 hours a day, I'll start doing 9-10 hours from tomorrow, the equivalent of 36-40 FoS runs, and so 1.116-1.240 mobs each day, let's see how long it takes to drop.
I can also eastimate like 1.000 kills so far.
And to reply to the AH part, there's a level 80 selling one for 15-17k on the AH, and still hasn't sold it; not going to buy it at all.

Dropped for me too! I'm not going to host the screenshot on imageshack, unless required, as there's another one from the previous post, but I did like 20 more FoS runs (even if they stun, as an arms warrior, I still can kill 124 mobs each hour there and just 90 in PoS, even due to the higher health they have in the PoS) and in the end it dropped off the skeletons which 132k hp, called soulguard watchman, the second group of two, I think.
The quest chain till the achievement took me 3 hours to complete, maybe it's actually 2 hours and a half, as I took half an hour to check for the dalaran books.
Everything is easily soloable as an 85 arms warrior, except the devourer of souls, even at normal (I know some warriors soloed it, but I couldn't), so I pulled the boss, ran back 70-80 yards, I literally ran away, it despawned and I could loot the thing I had to loot without even killing it.
I can estimate roughly 1.500-1.600 mobs killed in those dungeons at heroic difficulty to get it.
Changed idea, here is my battered hilt drop:

Took me about five or six trash runs soloing on my Feral Kitty. Not a bad return at all, and I got a bunch of epic gear and frost weave cloth to sell at the same time. Win win! Still not sure if anyone's gonna pay 15k for it in the AH, but i'll keep you posted on how that goes!

Love all the math put into trying to figure out how many runs its going take to get a Item. last time i checked it was still a random loot generator, not dependent on how many times you run the instance/ kill the mobs. I'd been farming both Forge of Souls and Pit of Saron for this. It dropped yesterday within Forge of Souls from a Spectral Warden, during my eleventh instance clear.
Two quick points:- First, FoS can be completely cleared (save for the two bosses) and reset for farming purposes. There is no need to engage Bronjahm, who can be skipped by running around the edge of his room. Second, the mobs within Pit of Saron with the higher drop rate are found before the Forgemaster, in the large open area down the hill from Lady Sylvanas. Trying to clear anything beyond that point may be a waste of time, given the ease with which you can clear that area, leave the instance and reset.
As an aside, the subsequent quest chain is easily soloed, immensely satisfying and provides some nice lore-based insight. Well worth it for anyone with a spare 60-90 minutes and a desire for something different.
Good luck to everyone still searching for this.

As of 5.1, I can confirm the Battered Hilt can drop from farming consecutive waves of mobs in Halls of Reflection. There were a couple of posts on other sites that said they might have "fixed" this kind of farming, but those are inaccurate. It dropped for me on wave 7/10 of Halls of Reflection, but I don't know which mob because of AoE looting.
Farming the hilt by this method means going in, killing Falric, and killing waves 6-9 of trash mobs (waves 6-9 gives more mobs to kill than waves 1-4). The 10th wave is the boss, Marwyn. Immediately after the 9th wave is dead, spam click an armor manager macro that makes your character naked and drop all your gear into your bags during the ~2 second window you have out of combat to do so before the boss engages. This isn't required, but will speed up your farm time by letting Marwyn kill you faster, as well as not taking durability damage to your armor upon death, since you won't be wearing any. After Marwyn kills you, fly back to instance and zone-in. You'll be back on wave 6. Farm 6-9 again, rinse and repeat.
The obvious reason this method might be more effective than farming Pit of Saron is since you never have to reset Halls of Reflection, you will never have to wait for the lockout to release from "entering too many instances". Waves 6-9 gives 18 mobs total each time, and took me about 3 minutes to make a complete cycle. Again, I can confirm as of today that the hilt can drop from this kind of farming.

Just to confirm it, it still drops in 5.4. The way to do it is:
Go into Halls of Reflection,
Kill waves 1-4, kill Falric. Kill waves 5-9, die to Marwyn. Rinse and repeat.
This way you won't need to reset instances and look at "You entered too many instances".
Happy farming, if you have any questions post here.
EDIT: You can reset the boss if you have spell such as Invisibility/Vanish/Spectral Guise/Feign Death

every
elite mob, but I just wanted to confirm that I just got the
残破的剑柄
from a
石脊石像鬼
in Pit of Saron Heroic.
On a side note, I cannot believe how long I've spent trying to get this hilt, right throughout WoTLK, Cata and now MoP. I must have done Pit of Saron and Forge of Souls about 70+ times in total. Don't give up hope, you will eventually find it!
I can also greatly recommend the
旅行者的苔原猛犸象缰绳
or
雄壮远足牦牛缰绳
which allows you to easily sell the items you find in the dungeon and allows for repairs should you need them.

Currently (5.4.7) this is obviously easily soloable. The easiest way I've found to farm for this is to go to Pit of Saron, and circle the pit, killing all the trash. Don't kill the bosses, then run out, reset, rinse, and repeat. There are 44 Mobs that potentially drop this item per run. Unfortunately, the non-elite skeletons do not drop the hilt.
Happy Hunting :D

Confirmed still dropping as of July 29, 2014. The heroic editions of these dungeons are easily solo-able by virtually any lvl-90 and the hilt dropped off the General in my first Heroic HoR solo run.
The quest chain shouldn't provide any issues whatsoever for a lvl 90 and the biggest effort required is the running around to do the quest objectives.
These were selling for ~8k in the AH on my realm but, by all means, don't be shy to attempt a few runs first to get your own (and a LOT of Frostweave Cloth- FYI).

*How To Efficiently "Farm" This Item*
This is from a
Warlocks(Destruction)
point of view.
personally I prefer to farm heroic Pit of Saron. It's a lot more smooth, you can line of sight the adds. There's a lot more of them, and no death hassle. Note you should probably have at least some timeless gear and some form of heal because one of the adds, I don't remember, will put a debuff on you, that deals massive damage until healed 100% I have around 660k and it was ticking for like 50-80k every few seconds.
*If you are farming Pit of Saron*
1.) Use a soulstone
2.) Gather up the first half of the dungeon and do not go past where them deformed ghoul things are, the place where if you go far enough gargoyles swoop down and pick up them slaves and drop them. And do not go past where the first mob that is mounted on the blue proto drake patrols. I found they somehow reset and it can be a hassle.
3.) After your round up a bunch head back towards the middle of the big open space by the entrance. This will interrupt the caster and cause them to run to ya. When they stop casting charge head on into them and AoE.
4.) Loot
5.) Ride around to the first boss(The giant) and gather up them mobs, circling around to where the gargoyles swoop down then kill.
6.) Reset instance.
*Overview of Pit of Saron Farming*
Pros:
LOTS
more frostweave cloth, vendor trash and gold. Greens also that could be crushed down to make dust for frostweave bags or sold for transmog. I myself usually see a bit of BoP epics that sell for like 25 gold. There is also a good chance to get
艾沃尔的巨魔剑
Which is a nice chunk of gold.
Cons:
Instance resets! Since you can only reset the instance so many times per hour, depending on how fast you make the runs, you might have to wait to try again. Slightly less drop rate(but I will explain something in a minute about this).
*If you are farming Halls of Reflection*
1.) Soulstone
2.) Clear the first sets of waves and kill
ONLY
the first 'boss'.
3.) Clear the second sets of waves but
DO NOT
kill the 2nd 'boss'
4.) let him kill you. I would use burning rush so that it helps things go faster.
5.) When he resets use your soulstone and run close to the entrance of the instance. Here's where it get's a bit complicated.
6.) Place your Demonic Circle here :
http://postimg.org/image/3u75rl6hf/
(It's right before you go into the main room)I used the gateway to try and do this but it wouldn't let me use it.
7.) Run to the back of the instance by the entrance but do not run out.
8.) Run to the middle of the room and the waves should start. For me it started on round 6 since I killed the first 'boss'
9.) Kill all the waves of mobs. When the 'boss' comes out to play go ahead and go by the closed gate and use your circle to summon you behind the door. It will open, the boss will come through and then it will reset him :)
10.) Rinse and repeat. But make sure you are strong enough to kill the waves within 6 minutes so your circle doesn't go away.
Helpful hint :
For the riflemen and mages you want to stand in the middle like so :
http://postimg.org/image/3krglzu1x/
And line of sight them around the middle where the cauldron is.
*Overview of Halls of Reflection*
Pros:
Higher drop rate, and somewhat more gear friendly.
Cons:
Lower number of mobs. After you reset the boss it can be a bit of a wait. Less gold, frostweave cloth, greens and epics. Requires you to die(My method)
I hope this might have helped some of you get your hilt. It is a really nice item that gives you a sexy transmog in return, maybe an upgrade for you Twinkies :) Or maybe a good pile of gold!

I can confirm this still drops as of September 2015, Patch 6.2.2. Just dropped while using the Pit of Saron farming method described below. Took about 15-20 resets to get one drop.

Prior to 6.2.3 was and was able to get ~5-6 weekly. Since 6.2.3 I've run this dungeon over 100x and still no drop. That bad of rng? lower drop rate? bmah only now?

I hope stuff like this will reward cosmetic Warglaives if done by a Demon Hunter. Otherwise, our options for xmog is really limited.

Retraction 2018/11/07:
Via the PTR, I was now able to confirm that completing this questline on
any
character unlocks
all
weapons for your Wardrobe.
This seems to be the
only
case where quest rewards are unlocked regardless of the character's class.
Definitely a new change, wasn't the case when the account-wide transmog collection was introduced in 7.0, and may even apply retroactively due to how quest rewards usually work, but no guarantee.

The last several months, I tried farming this thing to no avail. Nothing serious - every other day or so, I'd get on one of my alts and spend half an hour killing all the mobs in the Pit of Saron, running out, resetting, etc etc. But after many months and who knows how many times I tried, it would never drop. Finally, I caved and went to the auction house. 15,000 gold seemed reasonable enough, so I bought it.
Fast forward about a half an hour, and I'm in the Forge of Souls to complete that part of the quest. And what drops off the Devourer of Souls boss?
Another one of these.
I'm beginning to suspect the random number god has a sense of humor.

For those who've never run these dungeons before, or did anything with Icecrown - whether you be new and boosted, or old and clueless:
The questline this sends you on has you do the three dungeons out of their intended order. You must do them, at least once, in the order intended - Forge of Souls, Pit of Saron, and then Halls of Reflection. If you do not, you will not have completed the questline that *starts* in Forge of Souls, that is a criteria for entering Halls of Reflection.
Especially don't do them on heroic, cause L100 and why not, because you'll then have to wait a day for your heroic lock on Pit of Saron to expire so you can run it again and turn in the quest that gets you the quest the completion of which lets you into Halls of Reflection.
*sigh* I was going to post my time, too.

This must have been recently snuck-in, but you no longer need to repeat the quest for the Alternative looks, if you did it before Legion launched. It looks like they went back and gave us all the appearances now if you completed it once! HUZZAH!
Not sure when it changed but as of 11/23/2016 I now have ALL the appearances, yet I did it a LONG time ago and just got the 2-hander.

Hello again!
A few friends from both my server and others, told me that they believed the hilt no longer dropped from pit of saron after the latest patch (for some reason, bad luck most likely)
But i decided that i wanted to give it a go for a 1000 runs (i only made it to the 700 runs mark)
I recieved a total of 12 Battered Hilts
Run Drops

-136
-200

I did get a bunch of other boe epics, 1 toy, a bunch of cloth and alot of various patterns
Also landed at a total of 27,312 Gold (from selling all the blues/greys/greens)
The two green patterns are: Red Workmans Shirt & Blue Lumberjack

Bought this item off the ah, when I tried to use it in the garrison it said " You don't meet the requirements for that quest." Headed to Northrend Dalaran, and tried to use it again there. This time it was successful, so you NEED to be in Northrend to start this quest chain it appears.

I will be glad, when someone can answer me :)

Could somebody please confirm as of patch 8.1 (which drops tomorrow) if you will still unlock all appearances by completing this quest on a non-warrior? I have it on my druid but don't want to do the quest chain if I should transfer it to my warrior.

The item still drops in BfA xpac (got mine from Forge of Souls mobs). Turning it in gets you all 7 of the xmogs (if your class can wield both 1h and 2h swords and maces, like a warrior).

The Auction House tracks these as either Horde or Alliance, not both. However if you buy it on Horde and mail it to Alliance you can still do the quest (and vice versa). Be sure to check both Auction Houses if you have the spare gold before committing to farming it.
