World of warcraft uses a well developed chat system, allowing people to communicate on many different levels. Since it is a game where action and fights play a leading role, players usually prefer to be able to communicate fast; therefore, many acronyms have been developed and have become a common way of speaking throughout the game. Many are in common with internet chats, many others are game-unique. The aim of this guide is to help beginners find their way into the game without spending the first weeks asking "What have you said?".
NOTE 1: acronyms having more than one meaning are enlisted as <acronym> (meaning #), like
dps (1)
and
dps (2)
.
The guide is quite long and acronyms are enlisted by subject rather than by alphabetical order, so if you are looking for something specific i suggest to use the browser "find word" function (press CTRL+F).
NOTE 2: the author of this guide has left World of Warcraft prior to Pandaria release, therefore he is no longer providing updates.
1. First things first - the chats
Why talking about chats? Because if you want to communicate, regardless of acronyms, first you need to know how to enter a chat. This can be a trouble sometimes for beginners. Here i'm just listing the base things, you will learn the rest playing.
There are different chats or channels, each one allowing people to chat with specific groups of players. In any capital city you will be able to enter 4 channels: general (#1), trade (#2), local defense (#3), looking for group (#4). Things said in these chats are readable by players standing in any capital city. Only channels #1 and #3 are available in the areas outside capital cities (press M on your keyboard to see the area you are standing in), and things said in these chats can be read only by players in that area. To enter a channel you can:
a) open the chat command line (simply press Enter on your keyboard) and type / and the channel number (e.g. /1 will allow you to chat on the general channel). Tip: after you type /# you don't need to press Enter again, just press Space and start writing.
b) if someone else is already chatting you will see something like on the bottom left corner of your screen (see image below, on the left), simply click on to enter channel 1.
Other useful chats for beginners are:
group/party chat
: only usable when you have formed a group with other players; press Enter and type /p to enter this channel. What you will say will be readable by the other group members only.
guild chat
: only usable if you belong to a guild (don't worry about finding how to enter one, starting areas are always full of people inviting new players to guilds); press Enter and type /g. What you will say will be readable by the other guild members only.
public speaking
: press Enter and type /s; what you will say will be readable by any player around you in a close radius.
yelling
: press Enter and type /y; what you will say will be readable by any player around you in a large radius. Yelling is often considered rude, unless you need to tell people about something important like "we are under attack" - but this is what channel #3 is for.
whispers
: press Enter and type /w player_name; what you will say will be readable by that player only. There are faster ways to perform a whisper, for example right-clicking on the player icon (it appears on the up left corner of the screen once you click on the player - see image below, on the right) and clicking whisper.
2. The game
Wow, wow, WoW
= World of Warcraft, and by extension Azeroth and the Outlands, the virtual worlds in which players act and move
bliz, blizz
= Blizzard, the developer of Wow
During the years many patches and expansions have been added to the original game core. Since expansions usually introduce many revolutions to the game, people may find themselves in need to specify during which expansion something happened. The expansions are listed and referred to as:
vanilla
or
classic
= the original game core. Max character level was 60
TBC
= The Burning Crusade. 1st expansion. Max character level raised to 70
WOTLK
= Wrath Of The Lich King. 2nd expansion. Max character level raised to 80
Cata
= Cataclysm. 3rd expansion. Max character level raised to 85
MoP
= Mists of Pandaria. 4th expansion. Max character level raised to 90
3. Sides and Races
In Wow you can choose for each of your characters one side between two:
Horde
(no short form)
Alliance
(short form:
alli
or
ally
)
Each side has 6 races:
兽人
,
巨魔
,
牛头人
,
亡灵
,
血精灵
and
地精
for the horde;
人类
,
侏儒
,
矮人
,
暗夜精灵
,
德莱尼
and
狼人
for the alliance. Since there are two elf races, players may find short forms like
belf
=
血精灵
nelf
=
暗夜精灵
;
these, however, are not too often used since the two races belong to different sides, and each side will simply say 'I'm an elf'.
Moreover,
狼人
has the short form 'worg', while
亡灵
s also carry the name 'The Forsaken'.
Almost all races have their capital city, and all capital cities have their own acronym:
Horde
side
Alliance
side
Orgr
Orgrimmar
(Horde main capital city)
兽人
,
巨魔
,
地精
SW
Stormwind
(Alliance main capital city)
人类
,
狼人
TB
Thunder Bluff
牛头人
IF
Ironforge
矮人
,
侏儒
UC
Undercity
, located under Lordaeron city
亡灵
darn
Darnassus
暗夜精灵
SM
Silvermoon
血精灵
exo
The Exodar
德莱尼
Neutral cities
Shat
Shattrath
Dala
Dalaran
Funny tip: the first time i asked where to go and a player told me "go SW" i opened the map.. and went South-West :)
4. Roles and Classes
As many role games, Wow has classes and each class can cover one or more roles during group fights. Roles are referred to as:
tank
= the player who focuses on having enemies concentrate their attacks on him only, so that the other players can survive the fight.
healer
= no true need to explain this. He uses abilities specific to his role to keep the tank alive (or the other players too, if needed).
dps (1)
= the other players of the group have one task only: to damage the enemies till they are dead. In most cases, at low level they don't need to fear direct attacks (the tank is focusing all attacks on himself), they don't need to fear death (the healer is keeping the whole group alive), so all they have to do is to deal damage. These players are the "dps role" players. Literally dps means "damage per second"
Classes are 10 and can have different short forms according to the specialization (what does this mean? Basically, each class have 3 branches you can choose from). Not all specializations have a short form; in this case, players just refer to that specialization calling it by its full name (e.g. blood DK (1) = a death knight with the "blood" specialization).
spec
= specialization. Tip: 'I'm blood
speced/specced/talented
' = 'I have chosen the blood specialization'
MS
= main spec
OS
= off spec, secondary spec (as soon as you reach level 30 you can train two specs at a time and switch between them)
Tip: in MoP an 11th class is gonna be added, the
Monk
.
In the following list, '-' means 'no short form' (being serious, everything has a short form in Wow; 'no short form' just means 'it doesn't have a short form COMMONLY used or acknowledged on english-speaking servers')
死亡骑士
: DK (1)
specs:

unholy
(uhDK or unDK)

5. Entering a capital city and not fainting
Here comes the big part of this guide. Beginners usually don't have too many problems the moment they start playing, as long as you know that /s lets you speak, you are able to make yourself be understood. But as they enter a capital city (they all are close to starting areas) they sink into a sea of exotic acronyms. Here is the list of the most commonly used:
asap
as soon as possible
brb
be right back
btw
by the way
caps
capital letters like THESE ONES. Since using caps in a chat equals yelling (which is considered rude) and since it may happen to casually turn caps on, people may say 'caps' meaning 'sorry I used caps but it wasn't my intention' or 'stop using caps' if referred to someone else
CET
central european time
cy, cya
see you, see you around
def (1)
definitively
dk (2), idk
don't know, i don't know
ftw
for the win. It states that a piece of gear/ability is powerful, or simply that you love it
gief
give
gj
good job
gl
good luck
gtg, g2g
got to go = i have got to quit the game, like in 'Sorry i cannot help you now, i gtg soon'
gz, gratz
congratulations
hearth
Hearthstone
, a starting item for all players. Also used as a verb like in 'I'm hearthing back' = 'I'm using the stone to teleport myself back home', where "home" means the place linked to the stone itself
howdy
how do you do
hun
honey
idd
indeed
imo
in my opinion
k, kk
ok, okay
lmao
laughing my a** off
lol
laughing out loud. Maybe the most used word in internet chats, it simply means 'nice' or can be used to end a sentence you consider nice. No worries, it is used so often you will soon understand the ways you can use it
asd
same as lol. It has no literal meaning, but is commonly used since it is fast to type (check your keyboard: a,s and d are consecutive letters). A true geek word!
nn
night-night
np
no problem
nvm
never mind
m8
mate, a common way to refer to other players
ofc
of course
oft
often
omg
Oh My God
omw
on my way
rofl
rolling on the floor laughing
tc
take care
ttys
talk to you soon
ty
thank you
typo
typographical. It means you have mistaken writing on the keyboard, so what you wrote is not what you meant. Players usually correct the mistake simply writing the correct word followed by a star. Tip: ' How are you tody? today* '
u
you
waliaysysys
we all live in a yellow submarine yellow submarine yellow submarineeeee.. ok i'm joking :)
wb
welcome back
wc
wrong chat. It means that what the player wrote was intended for people in a different chat channel
wtf
what the f***
y
yes
yw
you are welcome
clothie
classes wearing cloth armor, like
法师
s
ding
it means "hey, i just leveled up!"
char, toon
character, the "hero" you are playing. Tip: 'My char is a horde
萨满祭司
'
main
your main character, the one you play the most; usually he is the first character you made, and the one you collect things on (fashion items, profession recipes, etc.)
alt, alts
alter ego, your secondary character(s). Many players create alts to cover more professions or roles (one character playing as a dps, another as a tank for example)
banker
All characters are granted a personal storage box in any capital city bank (which is different than the guild bank, a bigger but guild-shared storage box), where to put all that old stuff you don't want to sell or the crafting materials for the character's professions. This storage box is usually simply called "
bank
". If your main's bank is full, you can create a level 1 alt (called "
banker
") and mail him your stuff, fulling his bank and emptying the main's one. Blizzard is aware of this (creating new characters just for their bank space) but tolerates it
BiS
best in slot; the best items available in the game for each gear slot, for every combination class/spec at a specific level
twink, twinky
many players create alts, keep them frozen at low level, then try to equip them with BiS gear. These alts are called "twinks". They are generally used for
pvp
, or just for nostalgic reasons (therefore stopping them at the level which used to be the max one during a specific expansion, so for example many twinks are stopped at level 60 to recreate what it used to be during vanilla wow)
GM (1)
game master; game masters are Blizzard-linked players who take care online of problems players may experience. If you have a problem while playing, you can contact a GM clicking on the red "?" on your bottom bar
GM (2)
guild master, the player ruling your guild
dude
a generic way to say "man", "guy", "hey you" like in 'Hi dude, how are you?'
noob
newcomer, novice. Someone who is still unexperienced of the game, and (as such) may do stupid things. However, this word is more commonly used as an all-comprehensive offense and used against high level players. Most of the times, stating that someone is a noob will just have him to state the same thing about you, in an endless and totally boring discussion not interesting for anyone. If a low level player is acting as a noob, teach him the right way to act; if a high level player is acting as a noob, ignore him, grab a coke, drink it and relax: there is nothing you can do anyway except going somewhere else
newbie
same as noob, this time without the offensive side. It just states you are new to the game
boost
people in chat may ask (and pay) for a boost, which means having upper-level players taking them into
dungeons
, killing all the mobs and letting them get all of the loot. It may sound a selfish request, while instead it is part of the social side of Wow helping low level players in this way
imba
imbalanced. Usually said refering to too-strong classes
nerfed
it means that something has been made less powerful than how it used to be in the previous game patches/expansions. Tip: 'It used to be imba, now it has been nerfed'
lag
this is not an acronym but is used quite often. Due to a slow internet connection, or to an overloaded game server, it may happen to have your character running in place without responding to your commands, or moving jerkily: this is "having a lag".
dc
disconnected, a player who suddenly went offline due to internet connection problems. Tip: 'Sorry i got dc, now im back'
afk
away from keyboard; the player is not in front of the screen. You will be flagged as afk after a fixed amount of time without moving, or you can manually set it typing /afk and Enter
dnd
do not disturb; you can set this status typing /dnd and Enter
bio
it means someone is going afk because he needs a toilet break
LF
looking for
LFG
looking for group, usually to start a
dungeon
(group challenges available once you level up a bit) or a
raid
(end-game challenges). It means you are looking for an already formed group you don't want to be leader of
LFM
looking for mates/more. Same as LFG, but this time you already belong to the group (you may even be the leader) and need more to start the challenge
NPC
Non-player character. Virtual characters like vendors or monsters, which don't have a player behind them
mob
any
enemy NPC
. kill him!
tag
any mob you damage while traveling around Azeroth will grant rewards to the player who hit him first only, if more players were attacking him. To be the first attacker is called to 'tag the mob'. So if you see that someone else is ready to attack a mob, don't tag it; it is considered rude. If you think that the other player will need some help just wait for him to tag the mob and then attack, otherwise just go somewhere else looking for other mobs for yourself
pve
plaver vs environment = mobs. It refers to
dungeons
and
raids
rp, RP
role play, a game mode in which players act pretending to be real elves, orcs, etc. therefore speaking and acting in the way a true elf/orc/etc. would do according to common warcraft mythology
pvp
player vs player. A game mode where players fight each other
bg
battleground
, one of the available pvp game modes. To enter the bg chat press Enter and type /bg
gy
graveyard
def (2)
to defend; generally used in battlegrounds
to cap (1)
used in battlegrounds, it means to "capture" the flag (an item granting some benefits or even required to win the battle) or significant locations. Tip: 'cap the gy' = asking to capture the graveyard
to cap (2)
to collect the max weekly amount of some tokens (like
), used to buy powerful rewards
(re)spawn
the act of a resource or mob of appearing into the game
respawn time
the average time between two subsequent respawns
mats
materials required by crafting professions (like
blacksmithing
) to create items. Also called reagents. For example, to craft a
Copper Chain Vest
the needed mats are 8
Copper Bars
and 2
Rough Grinding Stones
. Considering that some mats require themselves other mats to be created (for example 1
Rough Grinding Stone
requires 2
Rough Stones
) players usually talk about "
mats
" (the ones required to craft something) and "
base mats
" (the basic resources). Base mats are obtained through gathering professions (
herbalism
,
mining
,
skinning
), profession-specific skills (
Disenchant
,
Milling
,
Prospecting
,
Survey
) or can be simply found all around the world into
chests
or even
Fishing
. Base mats for
Cooking
,
Tailoring
and
First Aid
are almost only found searching on killed mobs. Some base mats can be found in specific places of Azeroth only (just like
Dark Iron Ore
), some are only found in
dungeons
or
raids
(like
Chaos Orb
) while some others (most of all
Elementals
) can be found in more than one way, even with
dedicated devices
farming
collecting base mats or other resources
camping
camping a rare resource or mob = sitting in the area where that resource is supposed to appear and wait for it to spawn.. for hours.. for days..
CD
cooldown. many spells or craftable items have a "cooldown time" before they can be performed again. Tip: 'LF truegold CD' = looking for an alchemist able to craft some
truegold
, which means someone who hasn't crafted it recently (so "he is not in cooldown")
MH
main hand; it refers to one-hand weapons to be equipped in the main hand slot, like
The Sleeper
OH
off hand; it refers to one-hand weapons to be equipped in the off hand slot, like
The Dreamer
WTT
want to trade
WTS
want to sell
WTB
want to buy
AH
auction house. Every capital cities grants access to the auction house trade system, allowing players to sell items to other players. Differently than a direct trade (like the one referred to by WTT, WTS, WTB), items are put into the auction house and bought there, so that the AH acts as an intermediate. It is just like the difference between selling something to your neighbour or selling through ebay
COD
collect on delivery, a useful option to trade items through the mail system. If two players have arranged a trade, but are too far away from each other to perform the trade, they can use a COD: the owner of the item will fix its price and send the item to the other player, who will be able to take the item from his mail only after payment; the gold will be automatically sent back to the first player
soulbound
soulbound items are linked to a character and cannot be traded to other players, sold in AH nor sent by mail. If you don't have a use for them, don't want to use them for transmo and you are not an
enchanter
(they can
disenchant
items to get raw materials for their profession), you can only delete them (drag&drop them outside your backpack) or sell them to an NPC for a few coins
BoE
binds on equip. States than an item (like
Je'Tze's Sparkling Tiara
) will become soulbound the moment you equip it (right-click on it or press C and drag&drop it into a slot), but if you don't you can still trade it, sell it in AH, put it into a guild bank or mail it to other players or to your alts
BoU
binds on use. States that an item in your backpack (like
Decahedral Dwarven Dice
) will become soulbound the moment you use it for the first time. Just as with BoE items, as long as you don't use it you are free to mail or trade it
BoP
binds on pick-up. States that an item (like
Demonic Rune
) will become soulbound the very moment it appears in your backpack
BoA
binds on account. Items (like
Lil' Tarecgosa
) that you can mail to any of your characters
greens, greenies
green-level items. Items are colour-classified depending on their quality: grey (poor), white (basic), green (good), blue (high), purple (epic), orange (legendary). Greenies can be sold to
enchanters
, they always need them for their profession
loom, looms
heirlooms. BoA items thought to speed up the leveling process. They increase the stat benefit provided accordingly to the player level (confront
Bloodied Arcanite Reaper
and
Bloodied Arcanite Reaper
). They can be considered as blue/purple quality items
transmo, mog
transmogrification. A new feature of Wow allowing players to make their armor and weapons look like some others you have deposited in a dedicated bank. You can find informations about this almost anywhere, so i'm not explaining this feature here
tier, T#
each class has a number of dedicated gear sets, thought to increase that class specific abilities and often providing class-specific procs or benefits. These sets are called tiers and follow an ascending order, so for example the T6 tier provides less benefits than the T8 one. See
http://www.wowhead.com/itemsets
for further informations
rep
reputation, an in-game reward system. Players have access to better rewards increasing their rep with specific
factions
achiv, achiev
achievement
, the recent dream and nightmare of Wow players. Press Y and find out...
FoS
Feat of Strength, a hard-to-get achievement

6. Doing group quests or
dungeons
While doing or planning group quests or
dungeons
(or
raids
, but hey, that's a beginners guide!) you will find the following acronyms and short forms:
aggro
aggro is a percentage stating how likely you are to be attacked by a mob. Coming too close to a mob will "aggro him" = he will attack you. In a group fight, dealing damage or healing group members will increase your aggro percentage. The duty of a good tank is to keep the highest aggro percentage for himself so that he is the only being attacked
AoE, aoe
Area of Effect. Some spells (like
Rain of Fire
) hit all enemies in a targeted area and can be very useful while fighting big packs of mobs. Tip:'aoe' = asking dps(1) players to cast aoe spells
caster
class who fights casting spells instead of relying on weapon-based attacks
CC
crowd control. Many classes have abilities (like
Polymorph
or
Fear
) which prevent enemies from fighting for a limited amount of time; these all go under the name of CC spells
DOT, DoT
Damage over Time. It refers to a group of spells, like
Corruption
, that damage the enemy X times once every Y seconds (also said 'once every
tick
'), instead of hitting him with a one-shot damage (like
Fireball
)
dps (2)
damage (dealt) per second. A fast and very much used way to state how good a player is in doing damage. Many add-on can help you calculate your dps (see
http://www.curse.com/
and look for 'recount')
enrage
under specific conditions, some bosses enter an enraged state which will most likely end with a
wipe
fresh run
a newly started
dungeon
/
raid
run, where no boss is dead yet
GS
gear score. A way to classify how good your equipment is. Press C and find your GS among the other stats, in the right panel. Some
dungeons
and
raids
require a minimum GS to be entered
inc
incoming; it means enemies are approaching or tank is gonna start attacking
LoS
line of sight. Many bosses' attacks only damage the players staying in front of him, so all players except the tank should avoid his LoS. The best choice, at low level at least, is staying at his back, but don't take this too seriously: some bosses (dragons usually) also have abilities that damage all the players staying right behind him
MC
mind control. Priest spell and sometimes bosses' spell, able to take control of a player for a limited amount of time
melee
class who fights from close range (like
战士
s)
MT
main tank
OT
off tank (secondary tank) - only
raids
need them, so ignore this till you level up
oom
out of mana. Wait for oom players to recover their mana before going further
pat
patrol. Trash mobs usually stay in group and sometimes move around following a specific path. Tip: 'pat' = 'be careful, a patrol is coming our way (and if you don't see it.. BEHIND YOU!!)'
pop stone
asking a
术士
to cast
Ritual of Summoning
pot
potion, like
Healing Potion
pug
picked-up group; a group whose members have been recruited in public chat rather than among guild members or friends
r

sheep
asking a
法师

Polymorph
trap
asking a
猎人

trash
all the mobs between one boss and the next. Tip: 'Clear the trash' = asking to kill the mobs so that it becomes possible to advance to the next boss
vent
Ventrilo
http://www.ventrilo.com/

tank&spank
the easiest possible tact: kill him!
dps race
it means you need to kill the boss in a specific time to avoid a sure wipe
adds
mobs usually summoned by a boss during the fight to come at his help. Handling the adds is often part of the tacts for a boss
to kite, kiting
sometimes the adds cannot be killed but still they need to be pulled far away from the boss. Therefore, one player must get their attention, go away from the other players and start running in circle, far enough from the adds to avoid taking damage, not too far so that they don't stop pursuing him, and constantly attacking them for the same reason. This is called "kiting" the adds
loot
the reward items found on the corpse of a dead boss ("
dropped
" by the boss)
roll
if you are a potential holder of a piece of armor/weapon dropped by a boss you can roll them = you can cast a need/greed and hope to win

FFA
free for all. A loot mode in which anyone can loot a mob/boss, the first looting the item winner
ninja
one of the most infamous words in Wow. Ninja is someone rolling on (even winning) an item he is not supposed to use. Be careful: 'I can equip it' doesn't mean 'I can roll on it'. You must follow priorities. Examples: (a) rogues are not supposed to roll on pieces of cloth armor, even though they can wear cloth armor; clothes are reserved for classes that can wear clothes only - (b) warriors are not supposed to roll on staffs, since they increase stats unuseful to them and very useful to other classes - (c) a player enlisted in a group as a dps may never roll on a tank/healer item. If his OS (off spec) is a tank/healing one he may ask before rolling. Always give priority to those who are CURRENTLY tanking and healing
buffs
abilities increasing players' stats. They can come from spells or be profession-related (potions crafted by
alchemists
provide buffs, for example). Not all buffs require to be casted or to consume some item, some of them simply are with you all the time depending on your class/spec
buff up
to apply the buffs before starting to attack
debuffs
spells or effects that weaken you for a limited amount of time. This can mean: increased damage taken (like
Brood affliction: black
), decreased damage caused (like
Resurrection sickness
), decreased healing taken, increased time between melee attacks, increased spell casting time (like
Curse of tongues
) and other nice things like these
7. Class-specific acronyms
Many classes have abilities affecting the whole group with useful buffs, so it is normal having other players asking for them before starting to attack. Basically, just cast your buffs before being asked. If someone is asking you something with some strange acronym, always think first 'are these the initial letters of any of my buff spells?'
The most common buffs are:
BoM
Blessing of might
圣骑士
buff
BoK
Blessing of kings
圣骑士
buff
-
Arcane brilliance
法师
buff
food, water
Conjure refreshment
法师
spell - conjure and trade for free to healers, they always need mana-supplying food
table
Ritual of refreshment
法师
spell
focus
Focus magic
arcane
specced
法师
buff
mark
Mark of the wild
restoration
specced
德鲁伊
buff
-
Shadow protection
牧师
buff
fort
Power word: fortitude
牧师
buff
di
Dark intent
术士
buff
SS
Create soulstone
术士
spell; the soulstone acts as a Combat Ress
HS
Create healthstone
术士
spell
asp, aspect (1)
Aspect of the wild
/
hawk
猎人
buff
asp, aspect (2)
Aspect of the pack
猎人
buff, NEVER TO BE USED IN COMBAT. If someone starts yelling 'hunter! aspect!!' it means the hunter has forgotten to remove
Aspect of the pack
and should do it fast
圣骑士
s also have buffs called auras, with different effects. If you are a
圣骑士
, be ready to be asked for auras.
These were the most common buffs owning an acronym. For a list of all class buffs, see the great comment of Zarac posted here
Emergency/boss fight spells
:
Some spells increase group performance for a limited amount of time and therefore are very useful to survive critical moments or fight hard-to-die bosses. They are:
tw
Time Warp
法师
spell
BL
Bloodlust
Horde
萨满祭司
only
hero
Heroism
Alliance
萨满祭司
only
Also
Ancient Hysteria
works in the same way. It requires a Beast Mastery
猎人
with a
Core Hound
pet, and needs to be casted manually
8. Now i can understand you.. wait, what?
Many high level
dungeons
or
raids
(even old vanilla raids) have their own acronym. Sometimes even daily group quests have one. If someone is 'LFG for BH', and you don't know what BH means, be sure it is one of them. Similarly, many significant locations in
battlegrounds
are referred to using acronyms, so if you are fighting in
Eye of the Storm
and someone in chat asks to 'attack DR', check the map: you will easily find out that DR means Draenei Ruins.
Just to list some of the most famous old raids:
BWL
Blackwing Lair
vanilla raid
MC
Molten Core
vanilla raid
AQ20
Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj
vanilla raid
AQ40
Temple of Ahn'Qiraj
vanilla raid
BT
Black Temple
TBC
SSC
Serpentshrine Cavern
TBC
TK
Tempest Keep: The Eye
TBC
Sunwell
Sunwell Plateau
TBC
kara
Karazhan
TBC
naxx
Naxxramas
WOTLK
ICC
Icecrown Citadel
WOTLK
These acronyms are often followed by a number, usually 10 or 25 (it used to be 20 or 40 in vanilla Wow), stating the number or players required. Basically, 10 players are needed for a normal run while 25 are needed for the so called Heroic mode, in which you will face harder enemies and gain better loot in exchange.
Currently enlisted: 281 acronyms/short forms
Well, here it is. I hope I have not forgotten too many things - Wow players make acronyms for almost everything, so something has been forgotten for sure. Enjoy and vote please :)

Having played online games since I was 4, I knew what most acronyms were
However, I learned quite a few here in this guide! You did a really great job in it! How long did it take to gain information on nearly every single acronym ?

He is one, that one will come across a bit, Got the full data from Urban Dictionary:
"w00t" was originally an trunicated expression common among players of Dungeons and Dragons tabletop role-playing game for "Wow, loot!" Thus the term passed into the net-culture where it thrived in video game communities and lost its original meaning and is used simply as a term of excitement.
"I defeated the dark sorcerer! Woot!"

Never in my life saw anyone say druud, however Drood is common on my server. Except for that, maybe add some more formatting, and perhaps one acronym I saw you didn't mention:
TL;DR - Too long; Didn't read.
Oh and maybe add the actual meaning of ASD, instead of just 'same as lol' since I at least have no idea what it means.

How about adding "carry"? I see that in trade/general a TON...as in "WTB 2's carry" or something similar.

Thank you for this guide. I have been playing for awhile but the vocabulary was driving me nutty. This was a BIG help. Please keep it updated for WoD. If you would add more raid and dungeon acronyms that would be great. I am never sure which one they are talking about and if I ask, then I am usually ignored or called names.
