Introduction
Hi there, this is
Saevi from EU-Blackmoore
. I'm in the raiding business from the very beginning of the game, the last three years of it as a leader in one form or another.
My general view of things is
"Everyone can get better at what he is doing, but he has to be willing to learn."
and thus, I'm here to give all the information about becoming a better raider (and player in general) I have.
A little bit about my raiding background: I'm in a 10m two-days raid (6 hours per week total) for more than 2 years now. We're tackling hardmode content as good as we can, usually finishing somewhere in the top five percent according to wowprogress.com. So while not being among the world's top players, I guess we're quite efficient when it comes to progress per raid time.
So what are the foundations of a good raider in my opinion? Let's get it started!
0) Admit that you're not the best and want to become better
This is the base for personal progress. It's not your gear, it's not your stupid raid leader, it's not the rogue giving TotT to another player or GC nerfing your class again. The (first) problem to solve is the mistakes you do on your own. None of these will go away with time, you have to spot them and fix them all by yourself.
I) Your Interface
WoW is a giant stream of data, and your Interface is what you see of this stream, and how you see it, and when. Your Interface should give you the information you need, when you need it, in a form that is appropriate. It should by all means NOT give you information that you don't really need. A common mistake of mediocre players is to download hundreds of seemingly useful addons giving them a lot of useless information. Take what you need, and don't take anything else.
Here's what I use and why:
Recount:
Not used for ePeen-purposes but simply for analyzing: How much damage did this ability do? Why did the tank die? Were all DDs on the add? I usually turn it off completely when doing farm raids,
worldoflogs
is a lot more useful then.
TellMeWhen:
A lightweight alternative to the almighty PowerAuras. I don't think it's possible anymore to play without decent DoT-Timers, and having all CDs, DoTs and Procs monitored where I want them gives a lot of overview.
DeadlyBossMods:
A Bosstimer addon is kind of a must have if you are forced to do certain thing before an ability even hits (like running to a certain point or spreading out).
Quartz:
Castbar, enemy castbar and Focus castbar where I want them.
OmniCC:
Cooldown numbers on all abilities as sometimes the greyed-out area is too hard to see.
TidyPlates:
Smaller, better looking nameplates.
And that's it! I don't need any more addons. I don't need to know what my Darkmoon Faire reputation is while fighting Deathwing. You get the point.
II) Your key bindings
Yes, of course there are people playing without key bindings. Some of them might even raid. Some of them might even shine. But nevertheless, you simply gain an advantage by using key bindings, and you will never, ever find a world class player who does not use key bindings or does not turn his character with the mouse.
Bind "move forward", "strafe left", "move backward" and "strafe right" to "WASD" or a similar combination of keys. Unbind "Turn left/right" completely.
Bind every single spell that you would ever use in combat to a combination of keys you can easily reach with your fingers still pressing one of the WASD keys. Good candidates are: 1-5,q,e,r,t g,h,z,x,c,v,b and combinations of these keys with the modifiers shift and alt.
After binding them randomly, start putting them in a useful place within the key bindings.Which abilities do you use regularly? Which ones go together often? Which ones are rather exotic or must not be pressed unwillingly? Which ones will often be combined with movement, which ones won't?
This may take quite a while, and you will have to adapt to it for another while, but every good decision at this point will pay off later. Big time.
Learning by doing
After you found a good configuration, you'll need a certain amount of practice to get used to it, but I can assure you that the investment is worth it. And never be too arrogant or too lazy to change your mind about the bindings: When you get the feeling that you nearly break your fingers every time you try to move while taking your Health Stone, change something. You'll hit the wrong button a few times afterwards, but you'll adapt sooner or later and profit from it.
III) Your class knowledge
As a normal human being, you will be unable to find out the cookie cutter builds, the stat priorities, the perfect rotation, the value of your set bonuses or the best trinkets all by yourself. If you're a math genius and bring a lot of time with you, you might come close, but it's A LOT easier to just look it up. It will take enough time to understand it, practice it and keep your knowledge up-to-date. The internet is full of outdated or plain wrong information, but there is a savior for WoW theory, and it's
EJ
. Just read (don't write anything there unless you know what you're doing), understand and do what they say. I usually take a look at the gear of the world's best players in the armory as well, just for confirmation. Sometimes they troll people with fake gear, but if you find obvious tendencies on many good players (like all the top Demo warlocks going for mastery) and EJ says the same, just copy it. Same goes for spec, gemming and reforging.
IV) Your Equip
First of all, equip does not really matter. When you're not in a top guild, your equip will be enough to beat whatever boss you're currently working on, and playing better by hitting the right buttons or not standing in the wrong places will give you a much higher boost than this cursed amulet that will never drop for you anyway. My general approach is: I don't bother what I get, but I'll make the best of what I got. Gem it right, enchant it decently, reforge it appropriate, get two raiding professions and it will suffice.
V) Encounters
Most importantly, think and read about the encounter beforehand. Which abilities are important for you, and what will you do when they hit? Is there an extraordinary good moment for certain CDs? During the encounter itself, never stop trying to be even more awesome: Don't let the DoTs fall of, don't run too late, don't run too far, just always, always keep improving. The more you play on your limit, the easier your raid will find out which tactic works and which ones don't. Just don't be the guy asking "what does this boss do?" when there's an ingame dungeon journal telling you.
VI) Your Guild
You should not waste your time in a guild that is not worth it. People never change, so if your raid leader is lacking raid leading abilities, or you are way better than most of the other players, there are three choices: Take over or at least take over parts of it, or bitch and moan and do nothing about it, or go for greener pastures. Of course, if you have personal ties to the members it's another story, but staying just for "e-Loyality" seems to be a hard case of setting the wrong goals.
VII) Dont' blame RNG
Bosses do a lot of nasty stuff. Sometimes, this stuff will hit very hard or different nasty things will hit at the same time and place. People never stop complaining about this. For some very strange reason, when the boss has been killed for the first time, the same people die rarely to "RNG" on the farm raid one week later. In my opinion, this is just a wrong perception: Stuff hits you, you don't see immediately what you did wrong -> you blame the world, god, RNG for it. Nevertheless, in most cases you (or someone else) actually DID something wrong, maybe you should not even have stayed in that place, maybe you could have avoided this death by ability X you wasted a minute earlier, who knows. Then, when you unconsciously stand in the right place the next time, the boss simply falls over. Blaming RNG just keeps you away from finding the solution to the problem, so don't waste your time with it.
VIII) Learn how to handle criticism
There are two sides of this medal: First, when you criticise someone, you should always keep in mind that the other person, although not visible to you, is a human being and probably does not like being criticised. Therefore, you should neither aim at hitting as hard as possible nor at stating your point perfectly. You should always aim at the one important goal: Making things better. If your target takes criticism well, be direct and to the point, if he doesn't, choose a humorous or any other less harming, less intrusive method - the most convincing method I know is to "force" people into finding the right conclusion for themselves. Soon afterwards, they will probably think it was their own idea from the very start.
Choose the time of critism carefully, especially don't start any discussions during a boss try or right before a boss try when everyone is eager to start.
The other side of the medal is being critisized. Don't take it personally, even if it actually IS personal, try to improve from it, think about it twice before dismissing it as nonsense - it might actually be true!
IX) Have fun!
Finally, you should play the game for fun. Success actually IS fun for most people, and staying optimistic in critical situations often results in success, so it's a never-ending cycle of awesome! So don't be the "man, this raid sucks!" kind of guy, be the one that turns it into a victory.

Nice! It looks like there's a lot of information here, but it comes out pretty dense & sections blend together. Might I suggest the use of headers to help break it up?

Very nice info in this and a lot of good points that even i pointed out as a new raider to people who have been raiding for a long time. Like blaming others for a wipe iv noticed that a lot of people will blame some1 else for the fail instead of just taking as something to learn from and trying to improve on it. Thank you for the info and i hope this will help me become better.

If you bind your movements keys to esdf you have more space to put spells, keep that in mind.
