This guide to leveling the Hunter in Dragonflight will provide a basic look at leveling your Hunter in Dragonflight, including reviews and ratings of the dominant specializations, links to leveling talent builds, tips for best and fastest leveling, gear, leveling professions, and links to class guides you'll need to make the best decisions going forward.
We will also include Pre-Patch information for the period leading up to November 28th, 2022, when Dragonflight launches and you'll move your leveling to the Dragon Isles.
Leveling Hunters in Dragonflight
Hunters are one of the iconic classes of World of Warcraft, and among the most popular across the board. There is good reason for this: they're one of the best classes for farming, easily soloable across all kinds of content, and good in group play as well. There's very little a hunter cannot manage (or escape when necessary).
As a pet class, Hunters enjoy some insulation from damage themselves, as well as another way of doing damage that acts on its own to a degree. Hunters can frequently take on solo mobs or content well above their usual pay grade, including doing "recommended 5 Player" quests with just themselves and their pets. Even if this fails, they have a great way to escape and try another day. Flexible, fun, with options on how to deal damage -- who can ask for more?
Strengths and Weaknesses of Hunter Leveling in Dragonflight
Hunters have one Class tree that applies to all Hunters, and three Specialization trees for Beast Mastery, Marksmanship, and Survival. While all three specs are DPS, there is a choice between ranged and melee DPS, as well as choices in how much you want your pets to figure into the equation.
All hunters share amazing survivability. With pets, a quick aggro dump with
假死
(don't forget your pet's version,
装死
!), traps, and a full-on immunity with
灵龟守护
, Hunters can unstick themselves from situations that would wipe out other classes.

Hunter Leveling Specs in Dragonflight
While you can level successfully as any class, some talent builds are more friendly to leveling than others. If you're planning to level in a group, what talent spec you pick will matter less, as there are more players to fill in for weaknesses. These recommendations are our class writers' picks for most efficient leveling builds in all types of play.
Best Leveling Spec for Hunters
Beast Mastery
remains the top choice for leveling in Dragonflight, even if it isn't the top tier build for end game content. It's also one of the best recommended class/spec combinations for beginning players, since the rotation is uncomplicated and your pet(s) do a lot of the heavy lifting. They are the only spec that can have up to two pets instead of just one, and they have a larger range of pet types they can tame. These are both great advantages for leveling.
Our class writers have put together comprehensive leveling guides that cover viability, tips, builds, leveling rotation, cooldowns, and leveling consumables. A brief summary of each follows:
Leveling Beast Mastery Hunters
As the pet specialists, Beast Mastery hunters get great advantage out of the wide array of pets they can summon, and have more abilities to make their pets even more tanky and powerful. Their ability to solo nearly any content is unmatched, and with various Tracking abilities, they can hone in on their targets efficiently. Successful Beast Mastery Hunters learn the best pets to use in what situations as well as the importance of keeping their pet alive. The one downside to Beast Mastery Hunter life (other than the occasionally wonky pet AI) is that the simple rotation can feel repetitive and get boring over time.
Beast Mastery Hunter Leveling Guide in Dragonflight
Leveling Marksmanship Hunters
Without the pet buffs available to the Beast Mastery Hunter and fewer options, the Marksmanship Hunter's pet is less durable and less able to keep aggro off you. Marksmanship Hunters have of long range on your abilities stands them in good stead for overall damage, but if your enemy manages to close with you, just hope that your
假死
is available. Marksmanship is stronger at end game than it is as a leveling spec.

Leveling Survival Hunters
While Survival can be very powerful, it's one where you may really need to build two talent loadouts depending on whether you need single-target or AoE damage. The talent tree is built in a way that it's not really possible to specialize in both at the same time. Thankfully, switching specs is much easier in Dragonflight, and most of your open-world questing is likely to center more on AoE than single-target anyway. It has a very different feel than the more traditional ranged Hunter classes, but it's a ton of fun. For those willing to take on a little more complication for the sheer exhilaration of flying on your
鱼叉猛刺
to engage your enemies, it's certainly a more daring leveling choice.

If you know what Hunter spec you want, but just want to get straight into making your leveling build, look no further. You can find the direct links to the Best Leveling Talent Builds for Beast Mastery, Marksmanship, and Survival Hunters here.
How to Export and Import Talent Builds
To
export
a build from Wowhead, go to the provided tree and click
Export Talents
in the upper right corner of the talent build. This will copy the appropriate string to your clipboard. If you want to save that talent string to import later, you can copy it to a text editor such as Windows Notepad or Apple's TextEdit.
To
import
a build into your character, open your character's Specialization and Talents window (N). In the bottom left corner over the tabs, select the dropdown and select
Import
. (Starter Build is provided for you by Blizzard, but it's not optimized for a particular activity).
Copy that long string from your Export in the Import Text window, name your loadout, and click save. (A loadout is a set of pre-selected abilities where you can save a set of abilities and talents. This lets you switch specs on the fly for different roles or different purposes, such as raiding, dungeons, or even low-level transmog farming. It's up to you!).
As a bonus, creating loadouts also saves any Action Bar setups you have for that spec, so you can set it up the way you like and return to that configuration when you switch specs.

Best Leveling Gear for Hunters in Dragonflight
Hunters can equip the following gear:
Armor Type:
Mail
Usable Weapons:
Bows, Crossbows, Guns (Ranged), Axes, Daggers, Fist Weapons, Polearms, Staves, Swords (Survival)
The choice of ranged weapon is really as much about aesthetics as anything else; you can even transmog a better Gun into a Bow if you prefer the look of a bow. Although Survival hunters can dual wield one-handed weapons, the spec works best with 2-handed Agility weapons, since many of their signature abilities will only work with two-handed weapons.
Much of the time while you're leveling, you'll be gathering and upgrading gear as you go. You usually do this with a mix of quest drops, dungeon drops, and profession crafted gear.
Gear iLevels for Dragonflight
In Dragonflight, your first gear from quests will be Uncommon items between iLevels 202 and 226. This means if you have geared up using catch-up mechanics from Pre-Patch and/or through raid and Mythic+ in Shadowlands, it might be several levels before you start replacing gear. For example, at level 65, you can get Uncommon quest items, drops, and quality crafted gear at around iLevel 289; this should give you an idea of the approximate level range at which you'll replace gear. All quest and dropped gear items can also upgrade randomly to either Rare or Epic quality, and some crafted gear can be created with higher quality as well.
Although you can start leveling in Dragonflight with an iLevel as low as 150, we recommend a minimum iLevel of 180, which is realistic and easy to get with little to no extra effort.
You can get into a good iLevel range with a combination of dropped gear in 10-60 zones, heirlooms, and crafted gear from the Auction House. You will want a higher iLevel if you wish to start early with dungeon leveling.
Best Leveling Professions for Hunters in Dragonflight
Most veteran players will have established professions and will wish to level these in Dragonflight. However, bear in mind that while professions are much deeper and richer in Dragonflight than they've been in past expansions, they are also more complicated, requiring a greater investment in time and effort to develop.
Players can have a maximum of two professions. All players can pick up the secondary skills
烹饪
and
钓鱼
.
First Aid
was removed as a separate skill in Battle for Azeroth and is now part of the
裁缝
profession.
For manufacturing professions, Hunters often choose
制皮
to make mail armor for themselves and to sell through the Auction House and Crafting Orders. This is commonly paired with
剥皮
.
工程学
is also classically popular with Hunters due to all the gizmos, gadgets, and explosives (pair this with
采矿
). Again, it's probably best to concentrate on leveling these once you've reached maximum level.
For players who don't have professions, we strongly recommend picking up two Gathering professions. At higher levels of Knowledge and Specializations in Dragonflight, you will also gain benefits.
Both
采矿
and
草药学
still provide small amounts of experience for gathering nodes.
剥皮
- with 20 points in
Harvesting
specialization, you get a bonus for your knowledge of anatomy to increase your damage against beasts and dragonkin while outdoors in the Dragon Isles.
草药学
- When you learn the
Mastering the Elements
specialization, you learn to Overload Elemental herbs (Windswept, Frigid, Titan-Touched, and Decayed), which allows you to channel energy into elementally-charged herbs for unique bonuses and effects. You must invest many points both into Mastering the Elements and into the four elemental herb types to get full effects.
采矿
- When you learn the
Mastering the Elements
specialization, you learn to Overload Elemental herbs (Molten, Hardened, Titan-Touched, and Primal), which allows you to channel energy into elemental deposits for unique bonuses and effects. You must invest many points both into Mastering the Elements and into the four elemental mine types to get full effects.
