Artifact Power fuels your Artifact Weapons in Legion, allowing you to select new traits which make your abilities even stronger! This guide will cover all the different ways to acquire Artifact Power, how to gain even more at once via Artifact Knowledge, and recommended traits to spend it on.
Note: Artifact Power as of June 26th is disabled in-game. All Artifacts are set to 75 traits. However in Battle for Azeroth, the Heart of Azeroth neck will be empowered via a new type of Artifact Power. Stay tuned for details.
What is Artifact Power?
Artifact Power is a collectable resource that grants you the ability to select traits on your artifact weapon.
Artifact Power is
not a currency
that you collect and spend, but is rather more like experience.
There is an Artifact Power
progress bar
that shows up above your experience bar. It indicates how close you are to your next Artifact Trait point.
Once you acquire an item that grants Artifact Power, click on it to add Artifact Power to your
CURRENTLY EQUIPPED
Artifact Weapon.
If you want to apply it to a weapon you have in your bag (for a different spec), you
must equip that weapon FIRST
, then use the Artifact Power item!
Artifact Power is
tied to each weapon you have separately
. Therefore, if you have managed to acquire X amount of Artifact Power on one weapon, if you switch to your offspec weapon, this Artifact Power
will not carry over
(it will have a separate pool of Artifact Power).
You can
increase the rate at which you acquire Artifact Power
through Artifact Knowledge, which is explained later in the guide.
Check out the
Guide to All Artifact Weapons
for more information on Artifact Power, the Guide to Acquiring and Spending Artifact Power, and the
World Quests
page to see if any World Quests currently reward AP.
How Do I Get It?
Artifact Power items are acquired through many activities in Legion, including:
Major quests/World quests
World quest caches (after completing 4 World quests)
Finding treasures
Doing random Normal or Heroic dungeons
Drops from Dungeon Bosses, Raid Bosses, World Bosses and Rare spawns
Order Hall missions
Outdoor objectives
Winning Battlegrounds
Arena victories
Once you acquire an item that grants Artifact Power, click on it to add Artifact Power to your CURRENTLY EQUIPPED Artifact Weapon.
Quests
There are specific types of quests that award Artifact Power and scale up with Artifact Knowledge:
World Quests - Many of the world quests reward items that give Artifact Power. The AP granted by these items tends to be commensurate with the difficulty of their associated world quest.
End of story line quests - Many of the one time end-quests in Broken Isles zones reward
Questor's Glory
or
Greater Questor's Glory
Class Campaign quests - The ends of the quest lines for the Class Hall campaigns reward
团体的荣耀
or
强效团体的荣耀
Treasures
There are hundreds of treasure chests littered around the Broken Isles. They are usually called "Small Treasure Chest", "Treasure Chest", or "Glimmering Treasure Chest".
The chests contain both Order Hall Resources and Artifact Power items such as:
珍贵的硬币
,
发光的纪念品
, and
世纪宝藏
.
PvE
Many PvE activities reward items which grant Artifact Power:
The bosses in normal and heroic Legion dungeons drops Artifact Power granting items such as:
胜利徽记
.
If you queue for a dungeon while your role's Call to Arms is up, your
破碎的协作包裹
can contain Artifact Power granting items such as:
无私荣耀
and
盟友之赐
.
Mythic and Mythic+ bosses drop Artifact Power granting items such as:
胜利护符
.
Completing your first LFD dungeon of the day awards
冒险者的智慧
(Normal) and
冒险者的传颂荣耀
(Heroic).
Killing raid bosses also rewards items such as
成就的赞誉
,
胜利之耀
, and
胜利之耀
.
PvP
Arena and Battleground Win rewards have a chance to contain Artifact Power granting items, with an increased chance on your first win of the day.
Gaining honor levels rewards Artifact Power granting items such as
争斗的荣耀
.
How Can I Get It Faster?
Artifact Knowledge is a system which helps max-level players (110) progress faster.
Artifact Knowledge serves as a way to accelerate Artifact Power gains over time.
Artifact Knowledge increases your rate of Artifact Power gains for
all specs and weapons on a single character
. This will help players that are trying to upgrade artifacts for off-specs.
This will not carry over to other characters - you will need to work on Artifact Knowledge separately on each character.
Each level of Artifact Knowledge increases the amount of Artifact Power you can accrue from a number of different sources.
Increasing Artifact Knowledge only becomes an option at
level 110.
To increase your Artifact Knowledge, you must complete a Work Order. These will cost 0
职业大厅资源
each and take 5 days at launch.
Each
神器调查笔记
increases Artifact Knowledge by 1 level; there are currently 50 levels in 7.2.
The boost to Artifact Power gains ranges from 25% increased AP at Artifact Knowledge level 1, to over 55200100% at level 50.
Players starting later in the expansion will find that the time required to complete an
神器调查笔记
will be shorter than at launch. There are also ways to catch-up and reach AK 26 in a day, detailed in the
Artifact Knowledge guide
.
Artifact Knowledge
WILL NOT
boost any items in your inventory that were obtained BEFORE you reached a certain Artifact Knowledge level.
Items from one-time quests and treasures scale up with Artifact Knowledge; this is so players that skipped content leveling up still have something to look forward to when completing the content.
Check out the
Guide to All Artifact Weapons
for a chart showing the Artifact Power boosts each level provides.
How Do I Spend It?
Artifact traits are special abilities that are unlocked over time via your Artifact weapon. Each trait requires a certain amount of Artifact Power to unlock, and as you unlock traits on the same weapon, subsequent traits require progressively more and more Artifact Power to unlock.
As you obtain Artifact Power, you unlock new Artifact Trait points to put into your Artifact Trait tree.
The cost of traits gets progressively more expensive. A big gap happens between the 13th and 14th traits, going from 1000 AP to 6840 AP.
You must fully max out one trait before you can spend points on a connected trait. You cannot jump around your artifact spending power; all of your traits must be connected.
Gaining Traits
The main point of Artifact Power is to gain enough to learn all the traits on your artifact, and all their ranks.
You can see what to spend your spec's Artifact Power on by clicking on your spec in the table below. These links take you to the "Gear" pages on our Legion Class Guides.

Refunding Traits
You can also spend Artifact Power on refunding traits.
You can respec/refund your traits (wipe them and reassign them from scratch) at a cost.
Respeccing costs the same amount of Artifact Power as the next point in your Artifact Trait tree would cost.
Alt-Spec Artifacts
With Artifact Knowledge acquired at level 110, it is easier to power through the starting traits on alt-spec artifacts. For example, an item that grants 200 AP normally will grant 200% bonus AP for 600 AP total at Artifact Knowledge 5. This means that you can purchase several trait ranks worth of AP from an item that would normally provide enough AP for one trait rank.
You should be able to spend 13 trait points easily with Artifact Knowledge: all of them together require only 6,500 Artifact Power. So using the 200 AP item example again; at Artifact Knowledge 15 that same item would reward 5900 AP which lets you power through most of the easy traits.
Again, to add an Artifact Power item to a weapon, you must have that weapon equipped. So, you cannot have your mainspec weapon equipped and click on Artifact Power hoping to apply it to an offspec weapon.
How Much Will I Need?
All primary Traits + Maxed Bonus Trait:
65,256,330 Artifact Power
Below is a chart outlining the Artifact Power (AP) cost for each point that you unlock in your Artifact Trait tree. Note that the cost for each point rises exponentially (particularly after the 13th trait) as you unlock more.
One artifact weapon tint requires
赐予我力量
; all traits unlocked except for the bonus trait.

I just added an upgrade costing 1,000 artifact points and was about to submit a bug report that the next increment was showing as 6,840. But decided to look here first. I guess there's going to be a faster way to get these points after I get to L110?

I am switching from BM Hunter to MM Hunter (at 105) I already have the Thas'dorah bow. Can I reset the artifact power I spent on Titanstrike to use on Thas'dorah?
*edit* NO. If you refund your artifact power it only refunds it on that weapon. It is not transferable to any other Artifact weapons from that class.

Is the "How much will I need" chart above accurate? I have 21 artifact points so far that should mean I have acquired 160,000+ AP thus far yet my Order hall Vendor will not allow me to buy my belt (required earning 100,000 AP) . I am not counting the points I get from Relics.
Any thoughts?

I hope these videos help you guys!

I have a question about how the Artifact Knowledge benefit works. I have several levels of Artifact Knowledge on my Boomkin artifact, but none on my other artifacts. Will the boost from my Boomkin's artifact apply to Artifact Power items I gain while working in any of my other specs or do I have to be in Boomkin when I acquire those items for the boost to apply?

Macro to use all AP items in bags:
/run for b=0,NUM_BAG_FRAMES do for s=1,GetContainerNumSlots(b) do local i=GetContainerItemID(b,s) if i and LibStub("LibTTScan-1.0").GetItemArtifactPower(i,1) then OOCDo.Use(i) end end end
/click OOCDo
Pull it to your action bar and click repeatedly - it will use all the items it can find.
Requires two addons to work:
LibTTScan-1.0
to find items with AP and
OOCDo (v4 or later)
to create dynamic "/use" commands.

Refunding Traits
If I choose to refund/respec, does this mean that I will have to grind new AP to fill my tree, or does the respec/refund give me back what I have already collected?

End of story line quests - Many of the one time end-quests in Broken Isles zones reward Questor's Glory or Greater Questor's Glory
Those two did not make it to live. They were replaced by AP items that are specific to the relevant quest.
_
If you queue for a dungeon while your role's Call to Arms is up, your Shattered Satchel of Cooperation can contain Artifact Power granting items such as: Selfless Glory and Boon of the Companion.
Boon of the Companion was removed as part of an undocumented change in Patch 7.1.5. Its place was taken by Blood of Sargeras.
Edit: Lol, down votes.

Just so I am not misunderstood: the value is getting to that level (You need 99B to get from Rank 71 to 72).

Artifact Power is tied to each weapon you have separately. Therefore, if you have managed to acquire X amount of Artifact Power on one weapon, if you switch to your offspec weapon, this Artifact Power will not carry over (it will have a separate pool of Artifact Power).
This does not explain *which* pool of AP. There are TWO. There is the amount of AP already invested into the weapon, and the other pool which is available to empower the weapon. Which leaves my questioh unanswered. I can understand that the AP already used to empower the weapon can only ever be used by that weapon. However this still leaves the question of the amount of AP that has not been used. If I respec and equip a different artifact, is that -unused- AP available for the newly equipped weapon?

Posted this on the Artifact Knowledge guide as well, since this guide hasn't been updated at all.
So I was a bit baffled that this information wasn't present anywhere that I could find, so I went ahead and took the initiative to put together how much AP you get from the end of a M+ dungeon, and from the weekly chest. Used videos of
Sense - Nurfed
(YouTube) M+ runs, and
Telar
(YouTube) chest opening videos to figure out the amounts, as well as
GeertJan
's comment on the
Everything About Mythic+ Keystones and Dungeons
guide.
This is correct as of Season 2 (Patch 8.1.5).
End of dungeon rewards:
+2 - 200 AP
+3 - 210 AP
+4 - 220 AP
+5 - 230 AP
+6 - 240 AP
+7 - 250 AP
+8 - 260 AP
+9 - 270 AP
+10 - 280 AP
+15 - 330 AP
+20 - 380 AP
Weekly chest rewards:
+2 - 1000 AP
+3 - 1050AP
+4 - 1100 AP
+5 - 1150 AP
+6 - 1200 AP
+7 - 1250 AP
+8 - 1300 AP
+9 - 1350 AP
+10 - 1400 AP
+15 - 1650 AP
+20 - 1900 AP
