Ok, I got it done, it takes a bit of luck.

Keep working in a circle around the deck, don't run back and forth, so you spend more time swabbing less time running.

Was as frustrated as everyone else, then realized you can continue to move and just click on stains; not stopping took a little practice but got it on my 3rd try ... hope it helps

A small helpful tip, if folks haven't thought of this: You can do this in travel form as a druid, and presumably with aspect of the cheetah up as a hunter.

Dunno how helpful that'll be, but it doesn't hurt to put this out there.

Edit Though looking at later comments, this is only relevant if you do this the harder way, and not bribe Ducan.

Tried for three days now....over 30 times I am sure. No luck at all. Frustrated enough that I want to drop the quest line...but cant get rid of being a Pirate. Cant do any other quests as I am with the bad guys and thus cant whack them. Have tried going back to all the NPC's with no luck either. Any help would be appreciated.

I am right handed so I move to the stain with the arrow keys (right hand), then have to take my hand off the keyboard and to the mouse to point and then right click the stain (right hand). This is impossible with one hand to do all 3 actions. Is there a way to put one of these actions on a hot key or a left hand? Thanks in advance! :-)

Just finished the quest. Yes, its tricky but can be done. Took me 4 tries. They start to mark the spots/stains with red marks above the ones that have been sitting the longest. You also do not have to be right on top of the stain/spot to "swab" it.

I got this quest done the 1st try after using the click to move method and turning all the UI off so it isn't in the way. Hope this helps

The first time I tried doing this quest I thought the same thing, there is way too many! The second time though I figured out what I was doing wrong, and I finished it without any messages about letting stains sit too long and even finished with some "down town" right at the very end.

The trick is, you do not need to stand and wait for the swabbing action. Once you click on the stain you can move on and click another without waiting for the sweeping motion with your mop. Once you do this, it's cake!

I have been attempting this quest for the entire weekend. I have tried all the methods described in this thread, and I have successfully achieved nothing. I am now so fed up with the whole thing, I'm on the verge of deleting the character, and avoiding this quest chain like the plague, in the future.

Anyone who says Blizz are "dumbing the game down" hasn't tried this quest. I accept that it is "doable", people have successfully done it, and I accept that it's a puzzle to be solved, but I don't seem to be able to.

I don't know what's so difficult about this quest. I've never done this quest before, but my bf needed it done on his alt so I logged in, tried it once and completed it.

The only thing really difficult that I could guess was that the dirty spots are a bit hard to see against the color of the deck. I just turned up my laptop's contrast and it was no biggie. I did this quest while having random buttons blocking my view too because I didn't bother to fix the bartender UI that had buttons all over the place.

i tried this quest like 36 times... My video card isn't the best so my game play is choppy.... hence, the spots are flashing before I can even make my toon run to them! i gave up and hearthed out!

After failing a dozen or more times, I'm just going to wait for Blizz to nerf it in the next patch.

... and if this is the kind of wack-a-mole nonsense that's going to be typical of Cataclysm, I'm not going to bother.

OK ... decided to try one more time (stubborn). Someone, somewhere, mentioned that they just kept doing it without stopping and eventually they could no longer pick up a new broom and when they turned their interface back on they were done.

I tried that and it worked ... maybe 4 or 5 times in a row without stopping before I completed it. I can't be sure, since I had the interface hidden, but it might be that if you pick up a new broom quickly enough, the timer doesn't completely reset. Eventually, you run it to 2 min, and you're done. Don't know, but it's unlikely that I got that much better over night.

I am doing the quest now. It is not bugged just ridiculously stupid. I just watch a master gamer complete it. He said to keep moving and don't stop clicking. So now I find myself asking' "What is the point of this stupid quest? Am I going to be promoted to "BedMate" next?"

I mean hey they are pirates who spend a lot of time alone with eachother and love to Screw people over.

Well I just completed this stupid quest. And all I can say is I wsh it was taken out of the game. We are paying to play this game so make it so we can have fun not feel frustrated for wasting our time and money.

Just click them as fast as you can and don't stop moving for 2 minutes. Oh and it is also best to do the quest when nobody else is around because they will hamper your vision.

This quest has a strong vacuum. I have tried over a dozen times. The spawn rate is too high and the allowed time is too low.

It is precisely this sort of quest that caused me to damage my right wrist, which is why I now only play with my left, except for key punching. This, combined with the fact I don't use a mouse, makes this about the most impossible quest in the game. I ran it about ten times in a row and, contrary to opinion, I was not "given" it.

I seriously recommend no-one picks up this quest, because unless you complete it it leaves you "Hated" by the Bloodsail Pirates and "Friendly" with them at the same time, so you can't take on more quests against them (though I don't know if there are any more). Thankfully, it seems to be the last one in this chain (for Alliance).

This was a nightmare on Beta and hasn't changed! Many tries later I found that the simple solution is to WALK not RUN. Walk in a fairly narrow circle around the middle of the deck usingh the keypad and click on them with the mouse. This way you miss fewer and the whole thing is simple. Set to walking by toggling the slash / key.

I finally completed this quest after about 20 attempts. As mac users will know, you have to hold down CMD. So i decided to sellotape it down and ... it worked. lol. BTW very stupid quest. Pointless

Not particularly a twitch gamer myself (at least not anymore), was able to do this by doing the following:

1) Enable click on move
ESC>Interface>Mouse
select 'Move on Click' box
select 'Don't move Camera' (purely psychological since my camera moved all over the place still)
2) If you're a pet class, park your pet somewhere off the deck
3) Disable the interface temporarily
ALT-Z
4) Get used to repositioning the camera with the mouse
5) Maybe start with camera to the side of the boat and start this thing

Make sure you can see as much of the deck as possible. Make sure you click on top of the "stains" on the deck. You should move there and swab the spot. Obviously, click on the "red" ones first.

I was having a terrible time with this quest. Having trouble targeting running around, everything people are complaining about. Worse, I have a mac with a one-button mouse, so right-clicking requires me to hold down a key, so it is hard to do that and move at the same time.

The solution was to set up two key bindings:

1) create a macro for "/target deck stain" and drag it onto your button bar for key 1

2) in key bindings, bind key 2 to "interact with target"

Then you just run around and hit "1 2" over and over again. No need to stop moving, no need to target. Becomes fairly easy.

I hope this helps a few other people.

Note: The click-to-move with a hidden UI is by far the best way to do this quest. However, make sure the stain you've just clicked has disappeared before you click on the next one. If you don't, that stain may not have been successfully swabbed, and you will fail this quest 100 times.

This quest IS bugged. I have tried the click to move on the stains, but some of them do not respond to the clicks, so a stain that was growing remains even though I think they have been clicked. I have tried the macro, and it does not work, it does not target the deck stains, and when it does manage to find one, the interact with object button will not trigger.
And I am not one of the over 60 crowd, I am 32, but my eyesight is not as great, and so I am screwed because my physical abilities are not as good as some child who plays fps games and has twitchy fingers to be able to click on the stupid stains. Unless you can group with 5 others and have each person take a spot and click stains, I cannot imagine playing anymore. And I just came back after over 6 months away. I guess I will be off for another 6 months. This quest has successfully soured me on WoW. Congratulations Blizzard.

A side mission should not be this hard! I mean, c' mon, I get one stain, four show up at the same time. FOUR! and at different places! I'm a lvl 39 Tauren warrior for God's sake, when you talk about speed, the last thing you think about is Tauren or warrior. Are they trying to make me pull my hair out? Huh? Is that what you want, Blizzard? Millions of devoted WoW fans pulling their hair out for one, little mission? Well, I hope your getting a good old laugh out of this cause I'm livid. Okay. Just read all of these because I was just as frustrated and ALL of the solutions are correct. SO, to keep it simple do this. (it doesn't take any fast twitch skill, no keyboard configuration needed).
1) Relax.
2) DON'T pay attention to any messages that flash up. Ignore the clock.
3) Keep moving from the very beginning.
4) When you run up to a stain, the instant the cog turns bronze right click it and keep moving looking for the next one. DON'T WAIT FOR IT TO DISAPPEAR. It'll disappear on it's own.

The thing that caught me the first few times was waiting for it to disappear.

That's it. Quest done.

This quest is a good challenge, for WoW has become pretty easy. The quest is fine, just run around and click the stains, and make sure you dont let them get too big or you fail obv. Passed on 3rd try, for 3rd time is a charm. It's really short, when you get into it. This quest does not need to be nerfed.

Defiantly one of the most annoying quests I ran into on WoW.
Completed it on a glitch... ^^; my lappy started lagging which froze the clock. When it started up again the clock was at zero and the deck spotless! XD
But I did try all the suggestions on here before that miracle defiantly got alot closer to it done with the UI closed. =]

Talk about frustrating! Arrgghh! Finally got it done but not by actually completing the task. After upmteen-million tries it felt sorry for me and gave it to me. Although, I did notice one reason I wasn't able to swap up so many of them before they stained the deck. They were double stacked. You didn't realize it until you walked away from it that there were two together. Then I noticed the label and you could see there were two there. The label was slightly skewed an I noticed it almost looked like an out-of-focus name label. Look for that too when you're swabbing. That way you can double swap. Happy to be DONE with this one. I say take it out. My wrist hurts from so many tries. By the way, this is my second day attempting it.

I have tried all of the above advice at least 15 times to no avail! I tried the macro and it will target, IF I am close enough which is rarely and then nothing happens for the second part. I have tried running in a circle and there is no pattern to be found. The stains keep spawning at opposite ends of the boat and I have no choice but to run back and forth. I came close once, but all of a sudden 10 stains spawns at once! Within 10 seconds they all had arrows on them. This quest is just not worth the time!

I've been stuck on this for about 5 1/2 weeks, no kidding, playing about 1 1/2 hour per day every day. I'm about ready to bag this until Blizzard gets rid of this quest! I've tried creating macros, walking instead of running, using the single click mouse option in the interface, and even playing nonstop for over 40 attempts one night thinking they'd eventually take pity on me and give it to me. No luck, and I didn't think I was half bad at twitch gaming. My question is this: what are the repercussions if I just bag this quest and move on. My wrist would love me and I'm hoping I might even regain feeling in my little finger.

Okay, it's a frustrating quest and I already posted my success using stevenj's macro.

I'm retired navy, was wearing one contact and a bit hungover when I did this. Key here is patience and trying to make it work. Saying, "I'm old" and such doesn't fly with me cause I could be considred old and again I had depth perception problems as I was wearing one contact. Just relax and give it a go. If one persons advice doesn't work another persons might be your golden ticket.

On the flp side, just about everyone who has done this quest thinks even more lowly of blizzard and you have joined the club with the others who are pissed off. Blizz certainly insulted most of us in some way with this quest - you aren't the only one!

I didn't think I would get my loremaster when I got to this quest but kept trying and got it so it is doable!

Worst. Quest. EVER.

If I wanted to play a whack-a-mole style arcade game, I'd buy a whack-a-mole style arcade game. I've tried all the tricks above but if you aren't perfect with the keyboard and mouse it's just not possible. I lose it with 40-50 seconds to go every time, and tried at least 10 times.

I'm done with it. I hope this quest isn't critical to a lot of other cool and lucrative quests in a chain, because that would have a lot of suction if it does. Boo on this one! Two thumbs WAY down, Blizzard.

EDIT -- Forgot to try stevenj's technique before and it worked the first time I tried it. Still, it's REALLY stupid that someone should have to resort to creating macros and temporarily updating key bindings to get it done. Still a really stupid quest as designed. People shouldn't have to temporarily customize their interface to get a quest done.

Tried doing this at least 30 times for over one hour then took a long break while reading comments here. When I returned, I completed on the first try. Stains were not spawning nearly as fast as before the break. I suggest you do not pick up the next broom immediately - give it some time to reset between tries.

I used the macro method and it worked. Prior to this tried mouse lock and was getting very angry. If Blizzard put this quest in to slow the game progression down ultimately keeping people paying members longer kudos to them, but otherwise it sucked. Wow is a thinking roleplaying type game and this was button mashing. If i wanted to play button mashing i would play xbox 360. Just curious did anybody enjoy this in any way.

I have found the solution! I tried this quest 40+ times and can't believe how easy it was! When you fail at the quest, Pretty Boy Duncan asks if you need help. Talk to him. For 1 gold, he will swab the deck for you and you get credit for the quest!

I'm sure this will save plenty of angst in the future! I wish I'd thought of it sooner!

The quest is not impossible just very challenging. I play with a laptop so no mouse to help me. I was able to complete the quest after about six or seven tries. The key is to keep an eye out for the stains that have the red arrow. Once you start getting red arrow stain ignore the others unless they are right next to the one you need to focus on. After trying this strategy I was able to complete, but the NPCs for turn in were glitched. I had to log out and back in several times before I was able to turn in the quest without attacking the NPC.

This Quest is bugged. I submitted a Ticket to Blizzard yesterday about it, and they gave me the "Diplomatic brush off," basically, telling me to go to the WOW Forums... I have no advice that is better than any of the above, I'm just one person, if enough people get together, and complain to Blizzard about how impossible it seems to complete this Quest, because it is bugged, maybe Blizzard will listen then, and take notice... I really love WOW, I think it's a great game, but they laid a rotten egg on this Quest! What is a Quest like this doing in a game about war, anyway?

Just completed"Swab the Decks."

Trying to accept the quest "Cannonball Swim from "Pretty Boy" Duncan but it is not allowing me as the NPC are showing up as enemies (red circles). Yet when I try to attack WOW displays the message that they are "friendly." What/how do I advance to the next quest when I get click the NPC to accept. BTW the NPC still have the exclemation point above their heads.

Any advice to this?

Here is the trick ------click on "Pretty Boy Duncan" and a chat bubble pops up asking him to pick up a mop ---then you get prompted as to whether or not you want to pay him 1 gold to do this chore for you. Simply say yes and the quest is complete!

I tried this quest several times, and no luck. Finally, I did the "Cannonballs" and "Limes" quests, returned to the deck and found Duncan. He has the option to pay him to swab the decks! Completed immediately!

THIS is the solution if you do not want to take the easy way out by paying Pretty boy Duncan.
Create a macro to target stains like this:

/target deck stain
then bind a convenient key to "interact with target" it is in your key bindings "targeting functions"

do NOT just spam this macro, only use it to target, u still need to look for stains but this will make it a lot easier to target them
target stains and look at upper left part of screen if u have target lock
then press ur "interact with target" button
it will take a few retries to get the hang of it (3 times in my case), im an average gamer so it shouldn't be too hard to finish it now
u only need to switch to the next stain real quick but now u don't need to see every stain before u can swab it.

Easiest solution in the entire game. Talk to the guy who gives you the Cannonball quest, pay him 1 gold and he swabs the deck for you. Quest objective achieved.

By far the easiest way of finishing the quest is to ask "Pretty Boy" Duncan to do the swapping for you, cost 1g and it finishes the quest

Okay, this was kicking my tail for a good while, I would leave the quest then come back. Here is the trick, after a round or two where I failed, a message comes up on your chat window, "Pretty Boy" Duncan says: "Having some trouble there, sailor? Need some help?" Once you see this message before you click the next mop find the crew on the deck by this name a talk bubble shows up, click him and tell him to swab the deck. Quest complete.

Sorry guys, but this quest is so easy.

Swabb the stains until the guy walks by and asks if you need help, speak to him and he says he will do it for 1 gold. accept that and he mops the stains, after a few seconds you get compete.

BUT, I think it has to be done AFTER the collecting cannonballs Quests.

I follwed this route and did it no trouble.

Was this quest nerfed? People talk like this is the most challenging thing of all time. I got the option to pay Duncan before I made an attempt, but I managed to do it on my own the second try with ease. Then I abandoned it and paid Duncan for amusement.

But really, I'm assuming it was nerfed, because that wasn't challenging in the least. I even had a water elemental and Onyxian Whelpling getting in the way of my clicks o_O. No macros etc.

You can click on Duncan and offer to pay him.

The first time I did this I did not get an offer from Duncan, don't know if he could be paid or not. I think it got nerfed.

why are the pirates enemies for me? i already did the quests.. the pirates were friends but when i logged out and logged back in they were red and i cant finish the cannonball swim quest

wow after 2 days of doing all i could.. a note to the help ticket...logging on and off many times..i got it done..and have no clue as to why the char finally . talk to me. i do do think it is that some of us are inept . it might be the comp function we have. just do not give up..please....

You can pay 帅小伙子邓肯 (just outside the door from the lower decks) 1g to swab the decks for you if you don't want to do the minigame.

I too was having problems with this quest. I was going to try the 1,2 macro idea and when I was on the deck and try the macro idea just for heck of it I talked to one of the pirates walking back and forth on the deck. when the balloon popped up one of the items I could select was that he would swab the deck for me for 1 gold coin. I gave him the gold coin he swabbed the deck quest completed.

I had a problem with this one where, at some point while cleaning the decks or possibly directly after I finished it, all of them became unfriendly again for no apparent reason, even though I still had the Piracy buff.

This meant I couldn't talk to "Pretty Boy" or Salthoof to get their quests or turn in the swabbing quest once I'd finished it to the captain. All of them still had their respective exclamation points and question mark, but they were unfriendly, so I couldn't actually talk to them--frustrating!

I considered abandoning the swabbing quest to redo it and/or heading back to the recruitment area to see about getting the Piracy buff refreshed somehow, but I had to stop playing to at that point to make an appt.

When I logged back on today, they are friendly again and all is well! Phew. So, if you run into this issue, trying logging or and/or quitting and coming back on to see if that fixes the issue.

Gah. Not only did it take me like 20 trys to finish this stupid quest, I had to log out 4 times to be able to turn it in. Thanks to everyone on here for the ideas for fixing that turn in bug. I was about ready to give up!

I tried the running around in circles, I tried the macros...you don't need to do any of this!

I finished the 2 side quests (not sure if it's necessary, but that's when I realized how freaking easy this was) then tried to swab up all the mess. I failed, as usually. It was then that "Pretty Boy" Duncan said:

"Having some trouble there, sailor? Need some help?"

That's when you can interact with him and tell him to grab a mop (and pay him 1g), which elicits this response:

"This is humiliating."

It's about this time that the quest is completed for you!
