Tactics (10m, most of it will apply to 25m as well)
I'm assuming you are familiar with the normal mode and decked out in heroic gear by now (you need to kill the first 6 bosses in heroic mode to unlock this encounter, this fact actually cost us one ID).
The differences to normal mode are:
- As usual, all HP and damage dealt is increased significantly, most importantly the
Burning Tendons
have too much hp to kill them within one phase. This fact alone roughly doubles the time you'll need for the encounter.
- Everytime an amalgation spawns, if debuffs a single player (10) / some players (25) with
Blood Corruption: Death
. Dispelling this debuff makes it jump to another player and has a chance to transform it into
Blood Corruption: Earth
. When this debuff fades, the player will be granted
Blood of Neltharion
.
- Everytime you kill an amalgation (rolling it off does NOT count), the raid gets a stack of
Degradation
.
- The killed blood will slowly crawl to the next opening and respawn.
These facts lead to the following general tactic changes:
- You MUST optimize tendon DPS. While the latest nerfs do not make crazy class stacking a must anymore, you still need decent DPS on them. Therefore, use classes / specs that can burst like crazy every two minutes, use a target makro for your opening spell (/tar boss2 /tar boss3 /cast AwesomeNukeSpell) and get a decent rotation for the 18s window (genereal rule: Use CDs before the damage starts, debuffs first, then short CDs (if you can use them twice this way). Also, your tank's DPS matter a lot here too (Feral Druids are golden, as usual).
- Do not kill any amalgations you don't have to kill, do not spawn any amalgations you don't have to spawn.
- Dispell
Blood Corruption: Death
very fast, do not dispell
Blood Corruption: Earth
ever. While it might be nice if it jumps to the tanks, there's a chance for it to become
Blood Corruption: Death
again, wiping you. Not worth the risk anymore.
- Be fast in preparing the Amalgations. While Tendon DPS are more important, Amalgation DPS really matters a lot.
Now for a concrete tactic:
1st plate:
When the encounter starts, dps three Corruptions asap. Roll em off immediately, spawn a forth one. Tank them on the left/right side of the plate you want to blow up while your second tank tanks and kills the blood on the other side of the plate your want to blow up. When the Amalgation is at ten percent and you have at least 9 bloods, load it up, kill it right there, dps the tendon, spawn the next Amalgation and repeat.
2nd plate:
Kill two Corruptions, roll em off immediately while dispelling. If possible, load them with the remaining blood pools right before the roll, reducing the amount of blood you have to deal with. Repeat the process from the 1st plate. Your tank will probably not be able to kill all the blood alone anymore, help him out. Don't kite yet.
3rd plate:
Now the &*!@ hits the fan, your offtank will probably tank a lot of blood (10+) right now, two new Corruptions have spawned. Kill two Corruptions, let your Amalgation tank pick up these Amalgations and kite them near your blood Tank. Throw every single survival CD your raid has and nuke away all the blood, roll off the amalgations right afterwards after they've eaten all the blood. If you time it nicely, they won't tick for a single time and you have some free air now. Repeat the process from the first plates, but some things change: Your blood tank will have to start kiting roughly during the first lift-off (or right after) and won't really return to help you. So assign one DPS to regularly kill blood near to your healers and have your Amalgation Tank taunt every roaming blood he sees (its fine to tank 10-15 while tanking the Amalgation). Use heroism/bl and pots for the first liftoff, repeat it with even more blood, pray to the gods and go to town.
Learning process:
While I can only estimate how hard this encounter was before the nerf, now it seemed quite fair to me: No real random elements, you can decide how to manage everything thrown at you and there actually are some options. For our raid, the main difficulty was to not get eaten alive after the first liftoff of the last plate. The key to it was NOT to dps the amalgation like mad but to sacrifice one DD to blow up the blood threatening the healers. Furthermore, we really profited from NOT timing the grips and the liftoffs except for the last plate because our Tendon DPS was by far sufficient even with nuking someone out of a grip during a liftoff (something that most probably was impossible before the nerf). I'm still unsure if it is a viable tactic to not kill two Corruptions after a liftoff but one (saves some time, costs you a Blood of Neltharion). We never tried it, but it might work for you if your DPS is lacking but your healers shine.
Another alternative is to use heroism for the last amalgation if you are very confident in your tendon dps. This gives you roughly 10s of time but makes the last tendon dps phase even more challenging. We did that on our first kill after having a 0.2% wipe with that tactic that would probably have been a kill otherwise, so once again: your call :-)
The third alternative is to NOT kite any blood but tank and spank the last phase. This is only possible with a very decently equipped block tank (a feral or dk will probably be eaten alive by 25+ bloods). We didn't really dare using this tactic.
The forth alternative is to one-tank the whole encounter. I don't really think this is benefical at all, but once more, some guilds did it, so it might work for you if you hit some kind of a brick wall with your dps but your tank is a semi-god.
Update:
with the 30% nerf up now and the 35% nerf pending, the easiest tactic seems to be to single-tank and dual heal the encounter as you will then easily be able to finish a plate within a single liftoff. While this feels a little less controlled (you have to randomly kill the bloods instead of really tanking them), it boils the encounter down to 6 minutes, you don't get debuffed as much (and have a lot more HP in the last phase) and finally won't even have to deal with as much blood as before (as of course there does not spawn nearly as much blood in 6 minutes). Give it a try if you are still struggling.
Last but not least:
Have fun!

Short guide for 10 mans (how our raid did the 1st kill):
Setup
- 2 Tanks (druid, paladin)
- 3 Healers (priest, shaman, druid)
- 5 DDs (hunter, mage, rogue, warlock, priest)
Fight breakdown
Pull -
kill 3 corruptions - 1st roll - kill last corruption, amalgamation - tendon 1a - kill corruption, amalgamation - tendon 1b -
kill 3 corruptions - 2nd roll - kill corrupion, amalgamation - tendon 2a - kill corruption, amalgamation - tendon 2b -
kill 3 corruptions - 3rd roll - kill corruption, amalgamation - tendon 3a - kill corruption, amalgamation - tendon 3b
Details
The fight mechanics are simple and straight-forward. The hard part is to not get overwhelmed by the blood adds and general incoming damage. They were tanked by the paladin and constantly nuked by the hunter. The healers can call for time-off when things got tight but this shouldn't happen too often. The whole raid should bomb them during the second roll, but not during the last. Instead, they are bombed after the roll, because the Amalgamations are likely fully soaked before the roll and deal a lot of damage. Towards the end of the fight, after Tendon 3a (during which the hunter keeps bombing the blood if possible), you'll get to a point where's too much blood. Proceed to kite them, using paladin and warlock stuns for every change of direction.
Raid cooldowns are used during rolls 2 and 3 and Amalgamation explosions, assign them beforehand. Ours were: SL totem + hymn during rolls, tranquility for the explosion. The non healer cooldowns were called by our main healer whenever necessary. Also assign someone to backup the dispeller when they are casting their cooldown.
The Almagamation is tanked near the plate and nuked fast. Mind to kill it right when Fiery Grip comes off cool down, else it would disrupt the Tendon phase. Be ready to call for a nuke stop if you're too fast. Just to mention the obvious, save DPS cooldowns for the tendon.
Enjoy! :)

Druid tanks are absolutely bonkers for tanking the bloods. We've been attempting this fight for 4 months with a Warrior tank now, and decided to try with a druid instead. We got it on the third try.
As a side note, this fight is probably the hardest in the game right now. The nerfs haven't impacted it as much as Madness, due to the mechanics of the Spine fight, meaning that this fight is still very hard.

This does not appear duo-able in patch 6.0. We are getting unexplained instakill flips, but it is not showing the animation. I've successfully duo-ed normal though.

This boss is the reason why soloers with no dispel ability can't have nice things.
Did you somehow think that bringing a healer friend along to dispel the instakill debuff would make things easier ? Joke's on you : having 2 players alive makes Deathwing roll faster (5 seconds VS 10 seconds solo), so you will die very quickly if either of you loses the tiniest bit of concentration when things get hectic. Did I mention that the tentacles can stun you too ? Yeah this never happens in solo. It requires the other player to hit the Corruption to break the stun, but you know, with our ilvl those tentacles are pretty fragile, and killing it spawns yet another Amalgamation. Which you seriously didn't need. Oh look, it's eating up the few blood pools you had carefully started to pile up ! Oops. And now you've got the Corrupted blood debuff. Hope your healer didn't just get stunned at an unfortunate moment.
If you expected this to be just as faceroll as the other DS heroic bosses, I'm sorry to say this probably requires some actual raid-level Vent coordination.
Basically, it was late at night, and after the 10th try (admittedly, we were
also
trying to get
也许我们能晃晕他……
for my friend, so we weren't making things easy on ourselves), we ended up saying $%^& it and plowed through it in Normal mode.
EDIT 6.0.3 : Blood of Deathwing was nerfed and is now survivable solo. REJOICE.

Strat after 6.0:
Disc priest and Sub Rogue.
At the start of the fight we cleared 3 tentacles, forced a roll and then stood 1 on each side that way Deathwing never rolled. I faded and all bloods went to the Rogue and once we had enough we killed the last tentacle. Stacked up bloods, killed, ran along our designated sides, killed tentacles and forced a roll, then went back to 1 side each.
This actually ended up being very, very easy. Hope this helps.

With the changes in 6.0.3 I've managed to solo this as Restoration Druid (Item Level 570).
I've specced into Ysera's Gift, Force of Nature and Dream of Cenarius and barely had any health problems, which I did have before this patch (maybe it was just bad play back then). And glyphed the Lifebloom which you usually use for PvP (Glyph of Blooming)
Keep moving from side to side and keep Moonfiring the Hideous Amalgamation, with the extra time before it rolls you can squeeze in a few Wraths as well but I used this time mostly to Hurricane the Corrupted Bloods. I timed the Hurricanes usually with the Nuclear Blast so I had free DPS time for the Burning Tendons. After three tries I had the right routine and managed.

With the Stat squish of 6.0.2 this is soloable but extremely difficult to do.
Problems with the fight as stands
1. Deathwing wants to continually roll. This can be countered simply by running back and forth the entire fight.
2. Damage of the bloods. There really is no counter for this other than being a hybrid healing dps class such as a disc priest ect. Non healing classes may want to only kill one corruption per each plate as to slow the rate of bloods coming out, also recommended for hybrid classes.
3. Healing absorb debuff. Again easily dealt with by a healing hybrid class such as disc priest.
I play primarily shadow and for this fight I had no choice but to switch to disc. It took me several attempts to finally get it but I did get it.
Doing the counters I mentioned above helped make the fight more manageable. Once you get past the first plate as a disc priest you can simply holy nova the rest of the fight and be fine along with shielding. Make sure you always kill a corruption closest to the plate. Holy nova right at the plate running back and forth once the amalgamation gets 9 stacks, stand in the area to be secured during the killing of the burning tendrel and holy nova when needed. Simple to explain how I managed it hard to actually pull off the first time. Just like doing it as a normal raid the fight gets easier after the first plate is up.

Finally did it as an Enh Shaman last night on Heroic 25. Definitely a very annoying fight needing to run around a lot just trying to survive. My vid of it:

Easily soloed now (as of 6.0.3) with a 632 BM Hunter. The healing from Spirit Bond kept me up above 80% health during the whole fight and I didn't notice any change in the difficulty compared to Normal mode (which I used to do before WoD).
The Life-BInder's Handmaiden grind has started.

Ilvl 645 destro warlock. On 10H there's still enough damage going out to kill if one isn't careful.
On 10N, stand in the fire gripped by a tendril, swamped by adds, it doesn't matter. Just execute the mechanics properly and that's it.
Voidlord didn't take any noticeable damage on normal or heroic.
On 10H, used Glyph of Eternal Resolve, did a lot more moving around to avoid damage, used the Voidlord to handle the bloods a lot more, popped Dark Regeneration once or twice. That was plenty, and multiple different combinations of heals/CDs/talents/glyphs would work. Managing the amalgamation to pick up the debuff, position, go nuclear and blow off plates was a bit more involved as a consequence.
Not a big deal at all, but 10H required some attention. On 10N one can afk.

Soloed- 677 Blood DK.
DeathWing will roll a lot!
Run from front to back while maintaining a zig zag motion. Kill the corruption while kiting the Amalgamation over the pools the corrupted leve behind. Once you have dragged the Amalgamation through to 9 stacks, kill him near the plate, BUT Maintain your running. I just dropped plague and hit him a few times and ran away in my zig zag motion. ( Didn't want to take a chance). The tentacles you can't just burn down.
Rinse and repeat. Good luck!

For fellow Soloing Masters - here a video I made for a friend of mine. Seeing how many people still have trouble with this encounter I decided to upload a short Video with some Commentary! :)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxbe1sTskJI
Seems like this fight is currently bugged. I will make my video available again when(/if) they fix the issue.
The Strategy in the Video seems to work now again just fine. Good luck out there. :)

Confirm still soloable in Legion.
Asmongold's WoD video is actually faster, easier, and less intensive than my original comment. See it here:

Did it as an 833 Fury Warrior, just for the Bloodthirst self healing, since it can take a while.
Basically, kill however many Corruptions you're comfortable with, then keep only one Amalgamation alive and run constantly back and forth across the spine on the edge closest to Deathwing's death. If you have DBM, the "Beware!" sound cue means you're good to turn around the other way and rinse and repeat to prevent Deathwing from rolling.
As you're doing this, kill Corrupted Bloods so that the Amalgamation you've left alive can pick them up as he follows you back and forth across the spine.
Once he's reached 9 stacks, kill him so he explodes and takes off a back plate, then kill the tendon. You will need to keep running back and forth across the spine during this as well.
Do this for all three plates and you're good. It's easily the most consuming fight in the raid now because of this, but it isn't exactly hard.

Had to watch a bunch of vids and stuff to understand, here is a tldr;
You have to get amalgamation to get 9 stacks of the stuff that bloods leave. amalgamation spawn after you kill a tentacle, so just leave 1 tentacle up.
To what to do; Kill 3 tentacles and then stand in the one of the 3 fire puddles (tentacle you just killed) to avoid running left/right and get 9 blood adds to spawn (they spawn inplace of the tentacle, so only need to leave 1 tentacle up to get more adds quickly). Kill 9 blood adds and then kill tentacle to spawn amalgamation. Run amalgamation over the dead body of the 9 bloods to get him 9 stacks. Get amalgamation near the head/north-most of deathwing and kill him, plate will come slightly off, kill the thing below the plate to completely remove it and move to the next phae. Repeat.

I just wanted to add this stratagem to a few places to make life easier for anyone who plans to do this raid solo (Specifically, the Spine of Deathwing fight). This is a paraphrase from another comment from lapdragon who got it from kulisek.
1) Kill 3 tentacles
2) camp in one of the tentacles holes (and make sure you have the tendrils buff) until you have at least 9 bloods attacking you - make sure to turn off your autoattack so you don't unnecessarily kill any of the bloods. Although, if you tend to have trouble it may be necessary to kill 1 blood to get the buff to resist fire damage.
3) Once you have 9 bloods, kill the final tentacle and start running left and right across his spine to keep resetting the Roll countdown, the bloods will follow you and the Amalgamation will eventually hone in on your position. Use an area of effect ability to kill all the bloods without killing the amalgam, and have the amalgam follow you over the fiery blood orbs until his counter says 9 next to the amalgam's target character icon. Then kill the amalg as quickly as you can making sure to run between the left and right side so the amalgam doesn't get rolled off prior to knocking the plate up.
4) Finally, kill the Tendon thing that is keeping the next spine plate on his back so the plate will fly off, and then repeat till you get the last plate and you win the fight!
This works best if you are at least lvl 100 with hopefully ilvl 720 or higher. I did this following these steps and was able to complete the
也许我们能晃晕他……
chieve at the same time. If you have trouble try taking out less of the tentacles at first or gear up. Supposedly, this fight gets much harder if you have more than 1 person doing it which from my experience is very true. I tried this Raid with a small group of new guildies and the person who took us knew what he was doing but it was horrible because no one else knew what to do and it is very difficult with a non-cohesive team. Probably the worst boss mechanic of the entire game.
This works as of 7.1.5 Legion

Easy version:
1) kill 3 tentacles, 3 amalgamations will spawn
2)kill 2 amal's and wait until 9 or more corrupted blood spawn
3) kill all corrupted bloods
4) pull amal through the puddles the bloods leave behind
5) at 9 stacks, kill amal next to the plate, it will explode and rip the plate off
6) rinse and repeat. always keep 1 tentacle and 1 amal up each round
good luck
