During Beta, this achievement awarded the title "
Ishmael
" for a very short time.
In addition, this massive creature has already been solo'ed and by a Warlock in the Beta none the less. (
NERF WARLOCKS!
)
;)
The killing even got an official Blue comment.

Herman Melville reference, specifically:
Ahab ultimately dooms the crew of the Pequod (save for Ishmael) to death by his obsession with Moby Dikk. During the final chase, Ahab hurls his final harpoon while yelling his now-famous revenge line:
... to the last I grapple with thee; from hell's heart I stab at thee; for hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee.
Read more about Moby Dikk at Wikipedia.
(I am aware of the spell error of Moby's name, but the profanity will ruin the links if I use his proper last name.)

I just did this about an hour ago
On My Hunter in beta
, and, wow, its an intense achievement, even with a hunter with ezmode
and
. (Having ignoring armor shots really helps to burn though the ~110k armor he has :P)
Anyways, best tip I can offer to other hunters is to kite around nespirah, easy spot for people to help you burn him down. I was at the 20 minute mark once I hit 80%. Asked /1 for some help when I knew I was safe. After we got about ~7 people attacking him, he was losing a percentage about every 10~20 seconds. He eventually went down @ ~35 minute mark. Just make sure when kiting as a hunter you abuse the fact that you have a max range to which you can use your spells. Every 20 seconds you want to move as far away as you can till you can't cobra shot + auto shot no more, than you know you can stop and let him catch up a bit so you can dps. Than repeat as necessary. Every ~1 or 2 minutes you want to look ahead of yourself and note if theres any other whale sharks incoming that may intercept with your kiting path.
That's all I can really think of really. Oh, and apparently he drops a
, how sad... Was also skinnable, person from /1 got x2 off him.
EDIT1: After noting that item, decided to look it up on
mmo-champions DB
, all the item IDs after the mangled flipper must be other trash drops that come off of whale sharks.

Okay, we just 3 manned this guy, me as a Warlock being the "tank", an arcane Mage and a feral Druid helping. You have to kite him withing 6-20 yards range, I suggest getting an addon to keep track of it (I used the built in function in stuf) and keep around 15 yards, it gives you a little go on. I think Warlocks are the best choice to tank him due to being able to keep 3 dots rolling on him while kiting, keeping you with significant threat and you can glyph underwater breathing to get a little extra speed boost. I kited him as demo using the imp. I pulled with immolate (the pull is the hardest part of the whole thing once you get it down) then I got CoE, BoD and corruption rolling on him, kept immo up with constant fel fire spam. I would pop meta whenever it was ready and use all my soulburned soul fires during those (we spent well over 10 minutes on this).
The pet choice was obvious, none of the melee pets can do anything without getting eaten (they will try to go behind him, getting themselves killed in the process), but with the imp you can have him launch 2-3 fire bolts then have him swim to you again. Extra pet management, but in the long run it is a lot of extra damage. I used my doomguard once during the fight, he got eaten after 20-30 seconds, but it's extra damage so it's all good. The Mage was swimming beside me the whole time to keep proper range, the Druid was behind or something, I dunno (he joined after we started) and I spent most of my time looking at the range monitor, the area around me (don't wanna get stuck while kiting him) and his ugly face.
There are only three importants things to remember during this fight: Let the kiter have lots of threat. Don't get in melee range. Be calm.
The first two-three attempts we messed up due to me getting nervous and ranging him, which causes him to evade and reset. After a few more tries I started getting my confidence back (I won't lie, he scared the *!@# out of me the first time I saw him) and I was working my way through a second bottle of beer, calming the nerves (no, I'm not an alcoholic). So give it a few tries, learn how to kite him and enjoy one of the most intense kites in the game.
P.S. Kiting this guy cured my fear for sea creatures. I guess it is true that facing your fears will help you overcome them.
EDIT: Spelling.

This is easy to solo as a hunter, if you have the patience for it. Make sure you have some means of watching your range to the guy. 10 to 15 yards is where you want to be.
Backpedal through the water while DPSing him. You'll have to stop occasionally for him to catch up - he's just that slow. Aspect of the Fox allows you to keep your steady/cobra going so you have focus for other shots.

I just did this, helping a small alliance guild and then pugging a small raid of my own in Org for it.
I recommend at least 6 people; the more ranged the better. The pickup is the most crucial! Have someone with strong insta-casts or taunts to grab the Whale Shark.
From there, backpeddle through the top layer of Vash'jir. The rest of the raid should backpeddle close to the kiter, in case they get gibbed, so the shark doesn't reset. Continue to insta-nuke and dot the Whale Shark as you kite.
If you do it right, and any nearby warring factions leave you alone, you'll get your shiny achievement in about five minutes.
Some players may die but the graveyard is close by so spawn up and swim back.
The more ranged people attacking while you kite, the faster she'll go down!

Kite it, slow it, have a few people taunt it, when you die run straight back from the graveyard.

Just completed this on Ner'zhul with the guild. We took 13 guildies and were able to down him in a few minutes. Our Death Knight just swam backwards and tanked while the rest of us swam backwards in front of his massive maw and ranged him down. Fairly easy to complete once you get the hang of the range, and keep him from evading. We only managed to have 2 people chomped and they were able to get back in time to still help finish up the achievement. It was a lot of fun!

Just successfully kited this as
Hunter
. Aspect of the Fox is made for this :)
Anyways, just back-pedal while nuking him. One thing though, stop up and take a small break now and then to make sure you don't get too far ahead of him. He does some sort of "roar" movement now and then that result in him getting further and further away from you if you don't stop. And then your aggro will drop and people die like flies around you. A backup plan could be having the 2nd highest TPS'er just in front of you all the time, so he is ready to take over the back-paddle-kite if you get out of combat.

This is nothing more than an exercise in patience and kiting backwards...
1. Leave your tanks (don't even bother trying to tank him... he one-shots for anywhere from 500k to 1.5 MILLION) , pets, and Melee at home (unless the melee wants to practice their gun/bow skills). All of the above easily pull aggro, and have the potential to pull it JUST far enough away from the person kiting him that he resets... NO MELEE
2. No healers necessary 'cause of the massive one shots... just have them go DPS spec, and help with that.
3. It's a slow burn... no one but the kiter(s) should be going all out unless you're all perfectly grouped up in front of him. Patience was KEY to this fight (for us anyway)
4. GROUP UP WITH THE PERSON KITING. This eliminates all chance that the accidental pull will pull him outta range and reset. He resets SUPER easily we found. That 6-20 yard range is smaller than you'd think.
5. Keep him away from the surface. (We weren't 100% that was the cause of him evading and resetting that particular attempt but we think it was)
6. Have one person watching the overall map to ensure you don't go beyond the edges of the zone (and get fatigued). We had the same person watching our depth as well (eventually we just kited him down into the abyssal depths)
Once you have the above down, it's super easy... Just be patient and have fun with it!

Just did this achievement on my mage, as fire obviously. Can only confirm what other people here have said. Use a range-check addon, backpeddle, make sure you don't go above 20 range (stay in 10-15 range ideally).
I must say I had great fun doing this achievement. Could've solo'd it, but I think it's best you take a few friends with you. I had 2 people with me, and i noticed at the end that i was very close to reaching fatigue waters. I didn't really look where exactly i was going while doing this. If i'd have been alone, i would've been in fatigue waters for sure.

Killing the Whale Shark for this achievement:
Killed it last night with 3 people, a DK, a priest, and an elemental Shaman (me).
Kiting is the only way, he one-shots anything and everything. You can dodge his attacks if you're very lucky.
The DK was in blood stance and would taunt and throw dots on the fish to keep agro up. He'd swim at what we figured was close to the maximum range before he evades.
The priest and I would DOT and cast as many spells as we could on the fish, always swimming more or less on top of the DK. The idea was, if someone was accidentally hit, we'd have 2 more people with agro to keep kiting him while the dead person swims back. I was also dropping searing totem, which was able to get a good 20+ seconds of DPS in before the fish swam out of range of it.
The DK died twice and I died once because we got too close. Each time we swam back while the survivors kept agro. We kited him in a circle around Nespirah.
It took over 20 minutes, since I was able to bloodlust twice.
All in all, the hardest part is keeping up concentration when kiting him. You don't want to get too close (death) or too far (evade).
Note that with multiple people, one person can swim out of range of him to go out of combat and reset agro, if you so desire.
And they aren't kidding about "no loot". He doesn't drop ANYTHING, in fact, he didn't even have the "loot sparkles" when he died. No fish, no greys, nothing but a nice achievement to link in trade!

Very fun and easy kite as a 85 SV hunter. Took me 2 tries because some mage found it hilarious to sheep me and watch me get oneshot at 35% the first time (indeed it was quite funny).
Kept my pet out for the buff he provides, just keep him passively by your side as he will either get oneshot or feared out of range. Fight took 15:30 with me doing 10.7k dps.
Stayed in 5-15 yards range the whole time, just make sure you stop a second or two every now and then for him to catch up.

Simple. We just done it on Gurubashi. We didn't kite him hardly at all.....I just got about 25 random people, and we all took turns getting aggro, while he just killed us all. If we died, we just swam back...it's not that hard really. 25 people...only 9m health...we took about 4 minutes. Good Job Gurubashi!

Just kited this as a prot pally with 7 guildies in raid with me... 1 lock, 2 hunters, 1 boomkin, 1 spriest, 2 mages. None of the dps wanted to download the addon, so I bit the bullet and we did it the hard way.
I used RangeDisplay (addon) and it was really simple to stay within the 5-20 yard range. As said by other posters, if you exceed 20 yards he resets and wipes everyone but you... less than 5 and you have a repair bill.
Initial threat was tough, but between 30 yard judgement and avenger's shield (misdirects were nice too), we were able to down him with only 3 deaths (all 3 were the warlock).
Swimming backwards is almost perfect for matching his speed. You will
very
slowly gain range on him, and you should be careful not to get outside 20 yards when he stops to cast fear. Also, be mindful of where you are going, as I almost kited him into a cliff.
That's all there is to it, folks.

I can confirm, that as an 85 Shadow Priest, I was able to kite this pretty easily in a group of about 10.
The group started off as 35 or so, with an erratic (drunk?) random trade chat group leader who believed nuking with that many 85s would do it. And, well, he was wrong. The shark killed everyone within a minute or so, and we were only able to drop him to about 85% on a full on nuke.
I read the above strats, and downloaded the rangefinder mod. For the 10 people remaining, I showed them I could kite the shark by keeping between 8-15 yards (using the mod it was very easy) and keeping basic instant cast dots. Everyone kept their dps super low and watched their threat. It took about 6 minutes with everyone using slow dps to down the shark.
We got this achievement as a server first, and since I kited, I kept all the loot.

Solo'ed to 50% on my fire mage but was taking so long I was loosing my mind so I picked up a hunter and an arcane mage and we got him down second try np. To make it super easy here is a must!...
pick one up around Nespirah
, the big spiky structure and just kite your whale shark around the building, then no running into things and no fatigue...easy day. Also in that location they have 2 of your big boys going in opposite directions so the tank can go in the direction that is easiest for him/her. Happy hunting.
** Another note - Don't back peddle, just go sideways slowly***

Pre-info:
- Tanks are useless, even with ultimate cooldowns of insane damage reduction, you'll still be oneshot
- only possible by kiting
- possible for melee classes as long as they use range attacks
Just duo'd this boss
Setup:
Fire mage (me)
Demonology warlock
I tanked this boss since fire mages can cast Scorch while moving when having molten armor on.
I used the addon RangeDisplay, keeping my range usually on 10-15 yards, because if you might move to fast, you would get 20+ yards evading, and if he moves to close, he would 1hit me.
If i got between 5-8 range, i rapidly changed around and swam untill i was back at 10-15y range. if i got into the 15-20 yards i stopped for a splitsecond and started moving again.
note: after having a few stupid wipes over nothing, we both downloaded the addon, and downed it FIRST kill.
Total fight took about 12 minutes.
i had absolutly no problem holding aggro over my warlock-buddy, simple for the reason that he had to interrupt his casts to keep track of the boss
Having a fire mage as a tank and no melee with you seems a very bright idea, as he can spam the boss all he wants, while keeping aggro and kiting.
My itemlevel was about 337 and the warlock was 345 average.
This achievement is not about gear, but about being able to kite a big shark of a few tons around for several minutes.
As a fire mage you might aswell ducttape your "S" pressed on your keyboard.

The addon RangeDisplay is your best friend for kiting this beast.
I was anywhere from 5 - 8 to 10 - 15 most of the time to keep him from evade bugging out. It's rather easy, a bit time consuming, I had a Boomkin who wanted to do it in my guild so I decided to kite for him. We did it in about 15 minutes.

Ok this is my personal experience I killed the whale shark in a raid of about 25 ppl.
If the whale shark hits you, you die so we had a tank pull and swim away while dps attacks the shark.
We had no heals and finished it.
My strategy for the dps spec Death Knights:
Get as far away as possible without being out of range for a strike
Use Chains of ice to slow him down
Icy touch
Death coil
I used this Strategy because i would pull about 20% aggro, the tank die and I would pull the boss instantly.
Hope This Helps! :)

We did it today (January 8th, 2011). You have to kite him around the area standing JUST in front of his nose. Have who ever is doing it with you stand beside you and not around the Whale Shark because if you go to far he resets. A good speed to go at is just holding down the walk backwards button.

4 manned today with RangeTracker as per Thortok2000's suggestion, a few died here and there, reset twice (our mistakes were the initial set up, started too close to edge with our backs to the border or we ran into a wall and eventually got too close to whale while trying to get away but not lose aggro...) third time we just backpeddaled and make sure we stayed in range. 2 mages, hunter and a priest i believe. only took about 15 minutes or so, wasnt really paying attention but pretty easy and not too timely.
Have fun fishin'.

Step 1: Get the RangeDisplay addon. (If you're a melee class: Get a friend, who is reliable and tell him to get RangeDisplay.)
Step 2: Get as many random retards from the trade chat, as you can.
Step 3: Tell them, that they'll get kicked, if the pull aggro.
Step 4: If they pull aggro, kick them.

Onesimus of Faith of Tyrande on Draka.
Kited him for the kill as a PvP spec Holy Paladin.
We had 5 other DPS.
Here are some notes about my experience.
The speed of the Whale Shark is EQUAL to the speed of you swimming backwards.
He aggros somewhere under 15 yards.
You get a LOS error if you are > 20 yards from him and he'll reset.
Here is what I did. (using Righteous Fury to maintain threat above DPS).
Position yourself in his path when he reaches the END of one of his paths, wait for him to turn around and begin swimming back towards you, when he reaches 15-20 yards from you attack and begin swimming backwards in a straight line coinciding with his path.
This gives the length of almost the whole map to kite him without having to turn very much at all.
10-15min later... dead.
Hope my experience has helped some people.
Cheers.

NOTE: This achievement CAN be done in a Raid.
We had 9 people part of our raid. Heals are NOT needed.
This is purely range dps. It also helps to have an addon that will determine your range between you and the Whale Shark.
We used RangeDisplay with works amazingly.
Our group consisted of
1 mage: spamming arcane
4 locks: spamming immolate, incenerate, shadowflame, hand of guardian, bane of doon, curse of elements, corruption
1 priest: spamming Shadow Word: Pain, Smite
1 hunter: spamming hunter's mark, rapid fire, steady serpeant arcane, tranquility shot, widow venom
1 pally: not sure what they used
1dk: spamming blood boil, outbreak, icy touch
We split the group into 3 group
Lock, DK & priest swimming in front of the whale swimming backwards and spamming out abilites. We stayed at 10-15yd range the whole time.
We then had the rest of the raid on both sides of the Whale, some following him.
It's best to swim in front of him, due to his fear. He will stop and turn around and fear people, while swimming in front of him we were not affected by it. If you get to 20+ yards away from him, his health will reset, so its good to always have dps going.
The most difficult part is kiting him. I was able to Death Grip him, however you must make sure you do not get too close or he will 1shot you. Locks are amazing tanks for this fight. It took about 10 minutes to kill him once everyone caught on to the techniques.
Also note: if anyone happens to die throughout the fight, have them swim back and keep helping.
This would be great to do as a guild and all earn your achievement together.
Hope this helps everyone! =]
I am linking a photo from the view of the "tanks" who swam in front and were basically making sure dps was on him the entire fight.
Fight complete, Whale Dead.

Popped my dps trinket with Pillar of frost for the initial threat burst, then just spammed Howling Blast and Outbreak/BloodTap-HB whenever it was up. As an above poster suggested, just kept swimming backwards which is a little faster than the shark's swim speed, pausing on occasion when it looked like i was outpacing the shark.

I got together with a few guildies to down this guy. Truth be told, I was feeling saucy and wanted to solo him, but hey, most everything's better in groups eh?
Anyway, we had a boomkin build threat on him and kite him around Nespirah. We wiped a few times, either because one of us got too far ahead in threat, or the boomkin was hit, and the rest of us were all within five yards. On our last attempt, our boomkin died, but I, being the amazing (read cowardly, or being of incredible interest in self preservation) warlock that I am, decided to swim out to around the 20 yard range, and just put bane of doom and corruption on him while everyone else ran back to their bodies. Sure enough, that little maneuver got us the achievement.
Posting a screenshot as I type this, good luck to everyone else!
Also, he gives a debuff that causes physical damage over time. It's not too bad, long as you're in a group or have some method of self-healing. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Solo'd as a Holy Paladin. Spammed Judgement/Holy Shock/Exorcism while kiting the Whale Shark around the Ruins of Vashj'ir.
Actually, it wasn't *really* a solo - a feral druid came along and helped for the last 20%. Took just over an hour's worth of kiting to pull off.
It's worth noting that my main spec is Ret and I only had like 5 pieces of 333-346 Holy gear to speak of. I just felt that as Ret, my ranged abilities were too limited and that adding Holy Shock to my arsenal would make the whole process go by a lot faster, so I changed my offspec up a little with kiting the Whale Shark in mind. Even in my horrible gear, Blessing of Might, Seal of Insight, and Divine Plea meant that I always had enough mana to DPS the Whale Shark.
The most difficult thing was not losing focus and making sure I was always at the appropriate range and not kiting him somewhere where I might run into trouble. This is definitely a unique achievement and good luck to anyone looking to try it.

After another attempt with a melee guildy it's looking like it resets as soon as any one dies, he doesn't wait around to finish the fight with the rest of the group. Not sure if this is a bug with this particular spawn as I did have trouble pulling him to start with.

Got it a few hours ago, as an elemental shaman. Took about 25 mins. I tried to use as much as I could Elemental Mastery and SWG. The addon mentioned, Range Display, is awesome for this task. A note for this addon. It has several "groups" of ranges: 5-8, 8-10, 10-15, 15-20, 20-25. If you get to 20-25, try to swim a bit towards the shark, since it's the maximum range to hold aggro and if you get to 5-8, try to gain some range since it's close to his melee. Try to stick to 10-15 / 15-20 and you should be fine.

Just soloed as 85 Affliction Warlock. Pulled just northeast of Nespirah. Opened with UA and spammed FF to keep it up the entire fight while recasting Elements, Agony, Corruption, and Nighfall Shadowbolt procs though the fight. Used Felhunter on passive for Demon Soul and Fel Intellect. Kited while backpedaling for one loop around Nespirah, then straight back toward Abyssal Depths. Kill was right at the zone border and took around 20-30 minutes total.
Overall, this was one of the most nerve-wracking battles I've ever fought. Even as I type this, my hands are still shaking and my heart is still pounding. It's a slow, methodical fight, but it keeps you on edge the whole time. There's no loot, but the experience was completely worth it. The last 1% where I could see every last hit point being stripped away gave me a feeling of superiority over the leviathan. I fear sharks no longer.
Range Display was invaluable for keeping proper distance. His model drifts around his hitbox, so sometimes he seems far away when he's almost in one-shot range, and others he seems right in your face at 20 yards. Ignore where he appears to be and go by what Range Display tells you.
Note that there are two Whale Sharks around Nespirah. They circle at different levels, so be careful not to aggro a second while kiting.
I encountered a bug during one attempt. While kiting around Nespirah, he traveled directly above one of Nespirah's entry tubes. He suddenly swam straight down (model turned vertical) out ranged me instantly and evaded. He stopped inside the entry tube, clipped through the sea floor, and just sat there for a minute. I mounted my seahorse and went to go try and start over, when he suddenly meleed me for about 700k from about 100 yards away (he was too far away for Range Display to show) and despawned. This may have been partially lag on my part, but I'm not sure. To be safe, don't kite him directly above Nespirah, but a bit outside the edge of her shell.

Here's a pro tip for hunters. Make sure you have both a cat and a wolf set for your calls. Start dpsing without a pet and build up a little aggro, then call your wolf. Get the crit buff, but the pet will disappear due to the massive size of the whale shark's hit box. Then call your cat and get the agility buff. Rinse and repeat whenever either buff wears off, and you'll always have both buffs up. The shark will also fear your pets on occasion, making it a little easier to kite. The Rangefinder add-on helps alot too. Takes about 20 minutes to solo.
A suggested kite path is to wait for the one that pats east to west, north of nespira and kite him straight west. This provides a clear kite path and enough room for the kill. Also you have to be in front of him to attack him, so be sure he's already facing west before you start. Good luck!

Soloed as balance druid + range display + backpedalling
Spamming moonfire every GCD, keeping IS up, used Starfall on CD, instant Starsurge on proc, Innervate on CD

Most difficult part is keeping focus.
I discovered the true meaning of Moonfirespam!

RangeDisplay helps a ton.
If you're using it, try to always keep your range on him at 10-15 yards. The most important thing to do as the kiter is not panic. He moves very slow. Don't even worry about where he is on your screen visually, because range on him is weird (before getting the add on, he aggroed and killed me when it seemed like I was like 30+ yards away, and he evade and reset due to range when his mouth was in my face). Just make sure you don't run in to other hazards, such as the other whale sharks, or the wandering elite snake. If you accidentally enter a fatigue zone, DON'T panic, because you have plenty of time to make a slow circle and get back out of it. 10-15 yards is a good buffer zone. If it cuts to 15-20, you know to stop. 5-8, and you know you need to move before he eats you. Kiting him is stressful but very easy. You aren't really running. You're just sort of tapping strafe periodically. It may be a good idea to kite him upward out of the aggro range of random wandering stuff.
Despite the melee complaints, melee can do this achievement just fine. In fact, everyone should basically be in melee range of him, so in case they pull, so he doesn't reset. He acted weird with misdirects for us, but I was able to kite him with Icy Touch and Death Coils. Other dps just have to pay attention to their threat. We had a group of 6 (+1 82 pug that joined partway through), and 3 of those were melee. Auto attacking is okay, since he doesn't enrage. Obviously, if you die, just run back.
When he starts getting low, he will occasionally stop to cast fear. If your eye is on RangeDisplay, this won't matter since you'll know to stop anyway when you get to 15-20.

it's prety easy. Just get one with agro and let him swim backwards. You'll have constant the good range, so that's easy. Hard time is that when u have it like 400k and a ally ganks u. but yeh.. that's the game..

I was slowly kiting him around Nespirah and after about 10 minutes, around 45% HP I backed into

So maybe Nespirah isn't the best place to kite around.

I just soloed him as a hunter, following the comments that have already been posted here.
Just thought I'd put up a few particulars about my experience downing him.
Having a range meter helped quite a bit. I used RangeDisplay and stayed in the 10-15 yard range. The second I got into the 15-20 range I would stop for just a second and dip back down into the 10-15 range. Keeping track of your range is the most important thing, it seems.
I did have my cat out, but I did not have him attack directly. He was purely out to provide a couple extra dps buffs; he was on passive the entire fight.
Aspect of The Fox was instrumental in allowing me to fire Cobra Shot while swimming backwards. Without that focus regeneration and extra dps, I wouldn't have been able to down him inside the kite path I took.
As for the kite path, mine was a straight line. I found a whale shark as far East as I could, on the far side of Nespirah. From there I kited him up above anything I might run into behind me and moved in a straight line westward. By the time I downed him I was somewhere south of L'Ghorek in the Abyssal Depths and had plenty of room to spare before getting into fatigue territory. I chose that kite path so I didn't have to worry about turns, enemies.....other whale sharks....or pretty much anything in my way. My biggest concern was if I would kill him before I ran out of room and would have to make a turn because I was having some trouble turning and staying in the 6 to 20 yard range. I did 7.7k dps throughout the ordeal, and ended up not having any trouble with it.
Just don't get bored by this sucker's face staring at you the whole time.

This IS possible to solo, you must be VERY VERY careful though. I attemted this as a warlock, but failed whn i got too far, got him down to 80% in about 10 mins, so it would take a very long time to solo. My strategy: Curse of Elements and Bane of Doom MUST stay up at all times, after I started with those two spells, i put Immolate on him, now heres where it starts. Kite him wherever possible, but do NOT attempt to round corners, (as i found out the hard way) he will come close enough and hit you for near 1 mil. dmg, so try to go as straight as possible. Keep Corruption up as well for the extra damage, while you are swimming backward, i used nothing but fel flame (for damage and to keep immolate up) and conflagrate when possible. Try to life tap at about 70% mana (just in case you need health) keep ALL of those dots up ( BoD, CoE, Corrupt. and Immolate {using Fel Flame} Death Coil also helps too :)) and remember do not get too far or too close, because if you do, all that hard work for nothing :( Hope this helps!
Happy Hunting!

Killed him as a shadow priest solo. I first tried to do it without the range mod, got him down to 20% once, but then got excited with how i could spam SW:D twice for 40k crits, and when being like OHGOD my health, accidentally fell into melee range and died. So I got the range mod and beat him first try.
Just go to 20 yards (if you try and cast from 20+ yards you get told you're out of LOS) and put dots on him. Don't bother with vamp touch, it can mess up your timing with the distance and either get you eaten or him reset. If you let him walk up to you until the timer hits 8 (and no later, be careful about it) then you can just hold down backwards then and just turn your angle of walking by about iunno, 10 or 15 degrees when your range says it's 20 (it rounds from 17.5 to 20 instead of 15) and you'll drop back down to like 9 from him...did it and it was pretty much completely mindless, just went in circles around nespirah.

Sharks are, indeed, fish. This one happens to be the largest known shark in the world. And, ironically, it is the least harmful shark to humans, in that its diet is entirely plankton and krill... and Steve-O's genitals, apparently:

Just did this achievement in a group of 12 people in a raid group so I have a few tips that helped us after wiping a few times:
1. Designate someone as the puller/kiter. Because the first person that touches it holds aggro. Have this person get an addon like RangeCheck and make sure they backpeddle away from the boss while staying between 6 and 20 yards away. Anything below 6 and you die. Anything above 20 and he will aggro someone else within 20 yards or reset.
2. Make sure that nobody is melee dpsing the boss. 10 out of 10 times they would get too close. Since World of Warcraft typically defines 'Melee Range' as 5 Yards or closer, the melee will cause the boss to stop, kill him, and screw up the kiter's range.
3. Make sure all ranged stay at max range even if it means not doing their best dps. This achievement took 15 mins with 12 people (granted some came after he was already down to 50%) so pull up a chair and get comfortable because it takes awhile.
4. Make sure the kiter is constantly looking up, down, and behind himself/herself. If a cliff is coming or if you are getting too close to the top or bottom of the ocean you have to start adjusting your path very early because sudden movements in any direction will cause the whale shark to gain a lot of ground on you. The whale shark can be kited from zone to zone within Vashj'ir so don't be afraid to move from one zone to the next while kiting.
5. Lastly, the dps found it easiest to stay at range and do the most dps if they stayed on either side of the whale shark.
So... that's what we found out in the long hour of wiping and re-pulling. Good luck!

Solo'd as a Frost DK. Originally Unholy, but it wasn't cutting it for me. Kited him with Death Coils, Howling Blasts, and Blood Boil while popping trinkets and self-buffs when available. Item Level was 351 and I had to kite him around 3 sections of Vashj'ir. When I got close to the edge I angled myself so I could bust a fat, wide U-Turn while maintaining range. I did that because I didn't want to risk Fatigue or something.
Used RangeDisplay and this spec with these glyphs. Most of the talents are fillers in order to get Howling Blast and stuff beneficial to it and my ranged abilities.

I have no idea why he reset, everything was going perfect and I was able to keep him pretty constantly between 10-13 yards according to Range Display. He just evaded with 1.4 million HP. Guess I'll just find a couple other people and get it over quick next time.

Just got this achievement about 5 minutes ago.
Helpful Addon
RangeDisplay
.
Set Up
2 Paladin tanks (1 for the initial pull and back up)
And any DPS class.
No healers needed.
1 tank in front
1 tank behind
n DPS at the side
Strat
It was rather simple. We had the first tank "pull" the Whale Shark (the tank in front), once the second tank (at the rear) sees the Whale Shark anywhere between 10-20 yards, taunt and swim backwards. That's about it.
The Whale Shark will cast a fear, just have the kiting tank stay between the "safe" range and ready to move again.
The safe range is between 6 and 20. Below 6 yards, the Whale Shark will one shot the tank. Above 20 yards and the Whale Shark will reset and evade.

Killed him with me (prot Pally) and a hunter. Took some time but once I gained aggro, the fight was a piece of cake. Just make sure whoever is tanking has a clear path behind them (our path was west of Nespirah through purple valley into Abyssal Depths). If you get 3-5 ranged DPS, the fight would take 5 minutes, the more the merrier.

Aspect of the Fox, pet on passive, held down backpedal and dps'd as hard as I could (10.3k was the best I did).

Just make sure not to corner too sharply or he can cut the corner on you and one shot (as I found out).

Just did this with my guild with me as the kiter (spriest) I just kept my dots on him and used SW:D whenever it was up and everyone just used all their threat drops to make sure I retained aggro. There were about six of us, some ranged some melee. It is okay to have people in melee range as long as they do not pull aggro. Messed up a few times due to his fear (you have to stop for a second which in a way is mildly terrifying) and once I managed to swim up somehow and breach the water surface losing my sea legs and getting me and my group eaten. It was kinda funny actually.
I did not use a range meter tracker mod and did it successfully after a few attempts so it is not necessary just swim backwards and pause for a second when you see him cast fear.

Just killed him as a horde SV hunter. Pulled him solo and just kept my wolf out passive for the howl buff. At around 80% I started to draw attention and some allies started to throw in their dps too. Ten minutes later he was dead and I got no achievement. I kept aggro on him the whole time and kept him between 10-20 yards backpeddling around Nespirah. So, apparently, credit for the kill/achievement can be ganked. I'll have to try again when nobody's around.
Next morning, without "help", I got the achieve easily.

Just did this achieve last night. I as a MM Hunter with Aspect of the Fox "Tanking" had a BM Hunter SV Hunter, a Mage Lock and DK (just for flavor).
Made sure that someone else in vent had Omen running to coordinate aggro dumps. The mage and lock would dot up and get into danger with the aggro and then swim out of range which caused an aggro dump. I had the other two hunters staggering Misdirection onto me to help dump their aggro every 30 seconds. The DK was dotting with Outbreak and other spells that don't cause big aggro. Using the add-on RangeDisplay from Curse I was able to gauge my range. staying in the 10-15 yard range stopping for a split second when it got to 15-20 and turning around and swimming momentarily when it got to 8-10 range. best to do if you have a straight path with little turning required as turning puts you into closer range and is semi difficult to correct. I am not sure if Aspect of the Cheetah works in backwards movement but at one point I tried it for giggles and it did work but then again he could have slowed momentarily causing me to gain distance so this is not a tried and true method by any means. All of us were 85 and in Heroic acceptable gear or slightly better and got him down in about 5 minutes.
Watch out for Fatigue areas and edge of zone areas as he swims to the surface and gets faster. (tried this solo)
Good Luck hope this helps!

Easily Soled with a Hunter 85 MM; only swim backward with aspect of the fox, a Disengage or two for some curve you have to do, and when it reaches a few yards of you, 6-8. And keeping at a distance of 12-18 yards. After a distance of 20 yards, he'll lose his target and get out of combat. Be sure to keep close.

Just soloed this with my 85 Survival Hunter. I've long held my kiting skills highly (no one could kite Drakk in UBRS better than me!), so naturally I saw this as a challenge I HAD to assign myself. I used Rangefinder, but it wasn't super needed. The only time it came in handy was when the shark started to get too close to me, meaning I needed to get back to backpeddaling rather than turning around Nespirah (which I kited him around to avoid hitting fatigue or something that would result in aggro loss/death.)
As others have said, just keep him about 8-15 yards away and blast away with your instant casts. If he starts pushing for 20, slowdown as you'll start to have LOS issues with the whale shark, and those are your one warning that he's starting to get too far away and will reset if you don't get back one him.
Oh, and don't get him too close to Nespirah; I did twice by accident and both times caused him to lose aggro and reset. I'd advise keeping him close to the surface when you're going over Nespirah's northern edge, and bring him back down a little as you start heading south, otherwise you run the risk of backing into one of the boats... and that's a death sentence (actually happened to me...). Really though, I found that northwest corner to be the closest thing to a hassle. Gotta keep him off of Nespirah, but go too far north and he'll reset when he hits the big coral formation.
Once you understand how the fight works, it's more of an endurance test than anything. That said, once I knew all the ends and outs, I can safely say a Hunter should have zero trouble utlimately dropping one of these bad boys.

After spending a decent amount of time trying to figure out the fight for this guy, Eversong Knights has finally gotten the Whale Shark down xD I want to thank a lot of the previous posters who gave info on this fight. Long as anyone attempting this reads the previous posts, they shouldn't have any problem.
When I was first checking out this achievement, and constantly looking at the health this guy had I was kind of nervous about taking this guy. So I went here, and thankfully the posts were very helpful. It takes a lot of time, and a lot of getting gobbled up to finally get the fight down. Especially for people like me, who are like, checking the area around them constantly for possible mobs you could run into (Like the other whale shark, depending on what direction you kite it) or running into walls. I actually kept surfacing and fearing that I'd lose threat so then I'd end up swimming down, and swimming too close and getting eaten xD
But after a few failed attempts, my group's dk finally kited it pretty far till we had him at 100k and in the fatigue area, by then our dk actually got too close, so he died, and I quickly picked up the threat before he could evade and our kite would be wasted. And since we were in fatigue area, I don't think I've ever hit my buttons so fast xD
But luckily he was down'd, I wish I could add a screenie, but I probably kicked my seahorse pretty hard to get out of fatigue xD

Err, you can't just go AFK with auto-shot on. You swim backward ever-so-slightly faster than the Whale Shark swims forward, and eventually you'll go out of range and he will reset.
After several failed attempts on my fire mage I finally got him down tonight and wanted to note a few things I didn't see anywhere else in the comments. I'm assuming you already have the Range Display addon installed and set up; if you don't, you're likely just wasting time.
First, I tried (and failed repeatedly) with the two Whale Sharks swimming around Shimmering Expanse. Once, I got too close to Nespirah and lost LOS even though Range Display showed 10-15. And away went the shark. Another time, the second Whale Shark ran right into me. Repeat a few more failures until repair bill is around 100 gold...
So I gave up on those two and went to the third Whale Shark in Kelp'thar Forest. First time, I tried taking him north and then in a circle but ran into a fatigue area and couldn't get out fast enough. Then there were my attempts to pull him from any angle but directly in front of his mouth; he would invariably either reset or one-shot me almost immediately.
After that I did some scouting out around the whole Vashj'ir zone and determined that I could pull him approximately south-by-southwest along the angle of the ridge for at least 15 minutes before hitting the south end of Shimmering Expanse, and if I still needed more time I could go west into Abyssal Depths. This would minimize the amount of turning I would have to do, as well as eliminate obstacles and hostile mobs such as the other Whale Sharks, which swim at a much lower depth.
So I went back to Kelp'thar Forest and pulled the Whale Shark to the surface (he's near the surface anyway) and staying on the surface. I moved backward when Range Display showed 10-15 and stopped, turned or ascended when it showed 15-20. Worked perfectly; 18 minutes and 11 seconds later I had my achievement.
For moving up to the surface, you can safely pull the Whale Shark from above him, so long as you do it from the front, and when you are at most 15-20 yards away (10-15 is safer on the pull). Tap the spacebar to ascend whenever your range goes to 15-20 and he'll close in a bit on you; do this until your range is 10-15. Be careful when you do break the surface as you'll go a couple of extra yards in the air before hitting the water again; if you're too far away this could push you over the 20 yard limit.
Some mana management/DPS notes for fire mages: Pull with Living Bomb, then pop Time Warp and burn the hell out of him with everything (except Fireball; you can't remain in place long enough to cast it) including Fire Blast when Impact procs. Keep burning until you're OOM. At this point, drop Impact/Fire Blast from your rotation and your mana should return to 100% pretty fast. Then start using Fire Blast again. After 10 minutes plus a full mana pool, pop Time Warp again. Repeat until dead.
Finally, the Whale Shark not only drops no loot, it is not skinnable.

No problem as a shadow priest neither.
Worst part were when I was in between Nespirah and the northern wall,
at that place the Whale Shark some times had faster speed
so I had to adjust extremely fast to swim forward instead of backwards.
That was the only thing I wiped to a few times. Otherwise no problems.
The fight took 24 minutes and I kept all three dots up, Fear Ward + Shadowfiend (so I didn't get feared if I could), Shadow Word: Death for mana and Dispersion every time it went off the cooldown.
My tip is that you should pay extremely close attention to the speed of the Whale Shark,
in case of increased speed; you must swim ahead of it fast!

don't need to make some cross rail road around 3 zones

With scorch as my main nuke, living bomb as it faded, pyroblast procs and combustion, I did it in 27minutes 20 seconds.
I pulled the one floating around Nespirah and kited him around Abyssal Depths. He seemed to have a speed boost effect that killed me the first 2 times. I kited him in the 20-30 range, mostly swimming backwards, but turning to strafe when he speed bossted or I needed to turn him around.
My advice: don't lose focus, those speed boosts hit you when you least expect it.

Unlike previous commentary, I didn't need to maintain a 20 yard distance and instead could stay just inside maximum range of my spells without causing the beast to evade, thus giving a much greater margin for error.

Kiter - me, Frost DK in Blood Presence and kiting it in circle while spamming HB
The rest of the group - 5 random dps (melee and ranged)
There was no problems with the aggro, no resets, no need of heal and no deaths.
I was swimming around the boss, so the while shark was only spinning in a circle and not moving at all.

Cant post a link since I recently made the WoWHead user so your just going to have to search exactly what I put into the code box.
Was a fun fight, we where 40 man I think, funny how it took us a couple of min to down 9M hp.
But then again having 5 man gear was almost rare at that stage.

My girl friend (boomkin) and I (prot pally) were trying to duo this cheeve as well. Long story short we did get our cheeve but experienced this phenomena more then once. It does behave as if either your toon has stopped moving (which is not the case since my gf was still moving at the same pace as I; or that the shark has just about doubled, possibly trippled his speed. It drops from 20-25yards to 5-10 in about 2.5 sec. This rare occurrence does not seem to be prevented by kiting the shark to the surface or the seabed. It doesn't seem to be effected by % life left either as we experienced it at least 15 times with no discernible pattern. I have noticed that the speed boost it seems to get is exactly the same speed it naturally moves at when not in combat. So if you want to draw some correlation between possibly evade glitch effect not recorded by previous players or just some random byproduct of trying to solo something that was meant to be raided down I cant say.
I'm going to type up the long winded version of how we finally downed him including notes on how to avoid horde interference, alliance interference, other whale sharks, evade glitches, kite paths, helpful addons, and other info later.

If u are a melee class i highly recommend getting in a group with a few hunters as they are the best class for this achievement as i can be easily killed by 1 hunter, but i advise a few more range dps to save large amounts of time

Soloed a few minutes before this post by myself, 85 shadow priest in 353-359 gear. A few tactics for brave priests out there:
- you will need a range addon of some sort, I used Rangedisplay and it worked very well.
- you will need to kite him at a distance of 20-30 yards most of the time. Under 20 is dangerous, and above 30 is only to refresh VT and weave in a Mind Blast
- It is
critical
that you be at the hit cap for raid bosses (since the shark has the same hit rating requirements as raid bosses), that is, 17% or 1742 hit rating. You may get away with less but if you keep missing dot casts, the shark will end up evading, which sucks. So get to the hit cap.
- first, ensure at least 1 dot is always up on the whale shark, as if he stays undamaged (or more than 40 yards away) for 5 seconds, he will reset. You will want to keep a close eye on DP and SWP, and refresh them at around 2-3 seconds remaining. If you're not feeling comfortable, you can refresh them earlier, as long as you don't run out of mana.
- this part is not necessary for victory but it does accelerate the process substantially - you can increase your distance from the shark to 35-40 yards, cast VT, and resume kiting. You can also Mind Blast in the same way (do it when you have one or more orbs to benefit from stronger dots)
- cast SWD every time it's off cooldown, it will be your main mana regen for this fight, you will need it. It also does some damage, especially when the whale shark is under 25%, and every little bit helps.
- You can attempt to MF occasionally to build up Evangelism stacks if you are specced into it, but I don't think it's worth the risk.
- Do not use Mind Spike, those dots need to remain on the whale until it kicks the bucket.
- Try and find a kiting path that suits you. To get my achievement I engaged one whale, swam up 50 or so yards to ensure I wouldn't hit the other, and kited it around Nespirah. I left my map open to ensure I wouldn't swim into fatigue.
- If for some reason you are stuck and cannot get away from the shark fast enough, Dispersion
may
be able to mitigate
one
hit from the shark, so keep that handy too.
- As another poster said above, the shark seems to behave strangely in the top-left section of Nespirah, where he will randomly catch up with you, so try and stay focused if you kite him into this zone.
Overall it took 29 minutes for me to kill it (I didn't realise I could VT it until late in the fight, so it took forever). You can probably do it faster, I'd say a 20 minute kill would be realistic. I did not need to use anything special such as Fear Ward or similar - just my trusty dots, mind blast, and my range addon. Shadow priests rule.

solo'd as boomkin w/ 359 ilvl, took about 10-15 minutes spamming moon/sunfire plus is, hitting instant starsurge procs and starfall all the while. used simplerangefinder, stayed in the 20-30yrd range unless he charged, went out to ~35ish to make him stop but not reseting him.

Downed the Whale Shark at 4-17-18pm as an Afflic Warlock.
Kited him around Nespirah. Tried the swimming backwards thing, didn't work so just held down the E button making sure to keep Corruption, UA, Bane of Agony, CoE up while spamming Fel Fire and casting Shadow Bolt when ever Nightfall popped up. I also had Glyph of Unending breath just for a little more speed, and casting Haunt when ever I hit the 35-40yd range.
All in all the fight took about 20-25mins.
Happy hunting

I just solo'd this as an affliction warlock - almost 10 million dmg and it took me about 20 minutes. The hardest part of this imo is the leashing aspect of it. I got the stupid thing down to 8% twice before it leashed and evaded. If you're on a pvp server I highly recommend doing this during offtime. I also swam sideways constantly mashing felflame. Goodluck! Happy Soloing! I also submitted a screenshot of the dead whale shark as motivation...

just did it a few minutes ago, took about 30 minutes. fire mage, ilvl is like 336. only 6.2% hit and it was a none issue, had a few misses but nothing major
kited him from SE kelpthar up to and around the top, down the gorge between kelpthar and shimmering expanse and then to nespirah and around it a few times. he definitely acts weird around Nespirah. he speeds up and i had to keep turning around and running for my life.
got within 15 to 20 yds a few times and as far as 40-45 yds for a few seconds. they may have tweaked the speed because for a good 80% of the kiting i was swimming straight backwards and stayed at a distance of 25-30 yards with absolutely no adjustments, so that was nice.
on my first try he did the speed up thing in kelpthar and before i realized it he got me, he was still at 90% at that point. i accomplished it on my second try and if i hadnt done it i would not have tried again. its not hard but nerve racking and loooooooonnnnnngggg. the worst part was when it got under 1 million and you could actually see the numbers dropping. almost messed up a few times trying to watch that instead of concentrating, so dont make that mistake, especially if he decides to speed up when you are glancing away,

Three-manned this last night with a couple of guildies (paladin/kitty druid/boomkin). It was a little dicey since two of us were melee and I was the only ranged, but we managed after a few tries. Our biggest problem was that he kept getting snagged on the scenery and would reset...and we had a few instances where, at about half-health, he would spontaneously drop aggro off of our kiter and come after me and the other DPS regardless of threat levels. (other people in the guild who had killed him in the past reported similar frustrations)
We solved our problem by kiting him out to the Abyssal Depths where there was nothing for him to get caught on and the other DPS and I frequently dropped combat after loading him up with DoTs and bleeds to lessen the chance he'd turn on us. He went down in about ten minutes from start to finish, and it was gratifying to finally get the achievement on what was going to be our last try for the evening.

I found that you do not need to swim backwards all across the map navigating obstacles. Just keep strafing left or right in a circle All through the fight. It is an easy way to control the beast and even allows you to ignore the charge effect the whale tends to use from time to time.
I also found that soloing this thing as DK takes a lot of patience as we do very limited ranged DPS over such a long fight...
Happy strafing

After Reading various posts me and a guildie tried this tonight, and killed the beast. (classes were shockadin, fire mage)
you should get the addon first of all.
Pull
: plop yourself right in front of him and let him swim to about 20 yards of you and hit him with an instant cast, and proceed to strafe away from him at an angle.
Kite
: take him to the surface (we did the one in kelp'thar) then start going in a circle inward, by increasing or decreasing your angle (or radius for those who like geometry) you can continue to strafe without having to stop or flee for your life. Take him in a big lazy circle over the middle of kelp'thar watching to stay about 20 yrds from him. I liked it going back and forth from "15-20" and "20-25" on RangeDisplay. At the top of the water you shouldn't have any adds, and you won't have to worry about obstructions or running out of room to kite him. with this strategy you can theoretically kill him no matter how low your dps (as long as you are doing damage), just hope your finger doesn't start cramping ;) good luck hope it helps.

Soloed on my hunter, raid geared at about 365 avg ilvl. Took about 20 mins. Has 10mil hp. Pet does despawn as you are kiting. I strafed the whole time, and it did seem at 20% he was slower, and i had to stop for a bit and let him catch up. As others have said, kiting out-ranges the fear. hes immune to slows, so go with your raid spec, pref not bm since your pet de-spawns. Instant casts/moving while casting def required. Also, his hit box is HUGE, and the first time I had him down to about 700k and dragged him somewhere that he decided to evade. So be careful where you drag to.

I kited him backwards in a HUGE circle with aspect of the fox on so I could use my cobra shot to regen my focus, then when he snuck up closer to me, I hit the aspect of the cheetah and strafed away and out of his reach. Rinse, repeat and he's dead :)

solo'd him as a shadowpriest. Just kept my dots rolling and shadow-word death to keep my mana up. I never got closer then 15 yards. I found it best to kite him in a circle around nespirah after having him evade bug twice (once when he only have 200k left) >.< It took me about 20 minutes from first pull to the kill.
having the add-on "range display" is a MUST. makes this ever so much easier.
Also try to keep enough space for his rather large body to get through. If he gets stuck on anything he is much more likely to evade bug.
Good luck! :-)

If any level 80 hunters are thinking of trying to solo this guy, I suggest that you wait until you are at least high enough level to get Aspect of the Fox.
It's possible to kill him at level 80, but it takes a
long damn time.
Mind you, my spec is Beast Mastery. I don't know if there are significant enough differences in the other specs to allow a level 80 hunter to kill him in less than two hours. I just tried to kill him on my 80 hunter, and I was doing such pitiful damage that it took about an hour for me to get him down to 5 million HP. Unfortunately, I became
slightly
distracted and he killed me during one of his sprints*.
*Occasionally, he gets a short-lived intelligence boost which leads him to conclude that moving faster might be a good idea. It's not an actual buff, it just..happens; and with no warning, to boot.

Just soloed him as a warlock on the first attempt.
If you don't want to spoil yourself a very intense experience, try to solo this big bad guy (unless you're a melee class). I did not use the range addon and rather relied on the spell bar: Fear has a 30 yard range, most damage spells have 40 yard range, so I just kept swimming sideways while my fear button switched from red (not in range, stop now!) to white (in range, swim for your life!) all the time. While it seemed easy in the beginning, I got quite nervous after I kited him for the third time around Nespirah because I suddenly hit the water surface, resulting in a camera position switch. Luckily I kept my nerves and proceeded. When he was below 20% I was literally shaking a bit, panicked and swam too far away (40 yard spells turned red). If you stop immediately when that happens, he won't evade (at least, he didn't evade for me, luckily).
As a side note, of course you could optimize some glyphs and talents for this, but you don't have to. I had no trouble using my pvp-affliction spec. Just don't be an arcane mage here and you'll be fine, I guess.
While pets seem to bug him sometimes (he stops to kill them, then evades), he does not bug from the 2pT12 (fiery imps), he simply ignores them.
So long story short, happy hunting, although seemingly boring this was one of the most intense achievements for me.

I had my rangedisplayed addon set on:
Short 1-5 Red
Medium 6-15 Green
Long 16-20 Yellow
I made sure to stay in Medium all the time and still had some free range over if i should be to slow or to fast sometimes. Just keep the dots up and spam DP and SW:D when its off CD.
Good Luck!

I'm surprised no one mentioned the easiest and fastest way to get this achievement. You dont have to care about kiting, "ranged tank", aggro, resetting, etc...
Just get a big enough group, hero at start and freaking zerg the shell out of that shark.
I did it with a pug of 23 ppl. Downed the shark in 30 seconds with 4 fatalitys but all got the achievement.

First try I had him down to 5% health and must have gotten too far (not using a Range addon) because he evaded and reset. I really did not feel like I got too far, though, so I don't really know what happened.
Kited him in a circle, kept my Felhunter up in Passive for the buffs, it was intense but straightforward my 2nd try. My 3rd CoE wore off a few seconds before I killed him, so it took me about 15 min total.

I think the event has since been changed. I have observed the following and will attempt it with my guild.
The correct distance is now 35 - 40 yards, somewhere more towards the 40 range. If you get close to 35 yards, or fall below 35 yards he will charge and one shot you. I have yet to reset hit though even if you are out of attack range 40+ yards, he will not reset.
I've found that if I try to solo him in a straight line, I find that he eventually catches up to me and will charge me in the 35 - 40 yard range. Although it works for a while in the 35 - 40 yard range he eventually charges.
What has worked though is if I try it by swimming diagonally UP and DOWN. I find that when I'm swimming diagonally downwards/upwards he "clips" - his graphic clips. The clips occur about every second and are clearly visible. I think they happen due to him trying to get to your depth level. As long as he's clipping, he doesn't seem to charge. However as soon as he reaches the same depth level as you, he stops clipping and seems to catch up and then charges.
So, I'll be trying to defeat him by swimming backwards, up and down - up when I start getting close to the bottom and down when I start getting close to the surface.
I will come back to let you know how it goes.

So, last night I was suddenly struck with a lark to kill a whale shark, so I decided to research on methods of soloing it as a hunter.
Thanks to useful comments on here, I went and installed RangeDisplay (the first addon I ever used), and re-specced as Survival (I've been a Marksmanship loyalist ever since 2005, but darn it, I really want to kill that whale shark!). I even went out and brought elixirs and food, and practiced for a minute or two on a training dummy.
That done with, I went out to Vashj'ir, and found one soon enough. I pulled it, and immediately began kiting. I remained in 30-35 range, though whether I slipped into 35-40 range, I stopped moving for a spilt second (enough to fall back into 30-35). Twice the whale shark started to charge me; the numbers would rapidly slip down to 20-25 (man, that was scary), and I would spun around on my side and began strafing. That got the job done and easy, honestly.
In all, it took me about fifteen to twenty minutes, with absolutely no experience playing as a SV hunter ever before (meaning, those more experienced with the SV playstyle would probably get it killed faster). Oh, I forgot - my item level average is 376. I had my wolf out, on passive, for his furious howl and call of wilderness abilities.
It was a fun, and scary, kite. I highly recommend aspiring hunters to do the same! :D

I just completed this achivement as a Ret paladin. I had up Seal of Truth and kept facing forward with RangeDisplay as an add on, keeping me between 20 and 30 yards from him. He did not charge me. Judgement can be cast on things behind you, so it was a simple matter of letting the dot wear him down. I also started to use Hammer of Wrath once he was at 20% health, going forward a bit, turning, and nailing him once he came into range before swimming away again. Also, when I got the help of a hunter, I threw on RF so she didn't take my agro. All in all, was quite easy to do. Happy hunting!

50 minutes as a resto druid (ilevel 385). Moonfire and Insect Swarm while backpedaling in circles around Abyssal Breach. Kept Lifebloom up for mana regen. About 3k DPS. Slooooooooow and steady, focus on mechanics.
This is post-nerf (up to 40y range, monitored with IceHUD). Rather than fears the only thing to worry about was the occasional sprints, in which case you switch to swimming forward out to about 30y, turn around and MF, if it's still gaining turn again, otherwise resume watching the GCD spark, MF spam, refresh IS and LB when necessary.
First attempt was without Insect Swarm so DPS was lower at about 2.3k. Had it down to 6% then outswam combat range and it evaded. That was after 70 minutes with 6% left to go. Oy.
Never had a problem with other mobs or obstacles; just grabbed this one off the east coast and dragged it past Nespirah to the Breach. NPC scan lays a nice circle around it on my map for Mobus so I just gradually turned to stay in the path. Never surfaced, never checked behind me, just stayed deep.
Hilarious waste of effort for an achievement, but so worth it!

This guy is easy as range DPS. Just kite him in circles and the #1 most important thing you need to avoid is being unable to hit him; when this happens it means your OUT of range from him and if you dont stop for a 1sec for him to catch up to you he will "RESET" and go away. VERY important.. So when hes out of range just stop for 1sec and that should give him enough time to catch up and you being able to hit him again. 10min on 395ilvl.

Solo'd him on a Destro Lock. Was pretty simple, just spun in circles around him keeping my dots up and stopping every now and again to cast Immolate so I could keep spamming Conflag, and I would even stop to cast the occasional Incinerate or Chaos Bolt. Not a difficult fight, just a battle of attrition. Also I didn't use the range finder, I just used common sense. Took me about 45 minutes to an hour to solo him.
And a heads up for any Locks that also may attempt this. Don't bother using your pet, your better off picking one with a nice passive and Demon Soul use and save your Soul shards to Soulburn and insta summon em back once they de-summon cause you get too far away.

Make sure to keep in range and slow down if you move out of it. Watch out for mountains or anything it could get caught on and reset.
Tried to kill it with a druid friend but it kept resetting after he took aggro so it might be easier if your a hunter to try it on your own first. :)

Just did this on a 397 Survival hunter. I pulled the shark that patrols along the east part of Kelp'thar Forest. I started at ~83,34 and kited him all the way along the north and to the west, ending at 69,7 (looking at the Vashj'ir map, not the Kelp'thar Forest map). Took ~10 minutes.
Biggest tip I can give to anyone is this: do NOT kite through Kelp'thar Forest, but along the same route that I did. I tried a few attempts going through Kelp'thar Forest, only to find that once I hit the vegetation area he would speed up suddenly, causing me to either Feign Death or get eaten. I did not encounter this issue at all when I kited him along the perimeter of the Kelp'thar Forest though.
Hope this helps anyone in the future.

I have just solo it today, shadow priest. Indeed a ranged addon is verry usefull. I stood around 30-35 yards range and kept all 3 DoTs on him, the Vampiric Touch requires cast time and when I used that i was sure to be in the biggest possible distance but still in my spell range so after casting that to be sure not getting closer then 10 yards of him and strafed straight away him till back to my usual position at 30-35 yards. Hitted him with Shadow word death as much as i could until he was below 25% cause there i have the Glyph of Shadow Word: Death and makes him castable 2 times absorbing alot of my health (using Renew) helps alot. Took around 12 minutes to solo him. When he had 30% or so left I invited a friend too but he didnt hit him not even once and didn't got the achiv. So if u wish to get the achiv for your friends too everybody has to hit him at least once.

"in spite of or perhaps because of the fact that he drops no loot..."
Why do I do this to myself. All for a brief flash of the toast graphic and ten chieve points. This tormentful, putrid addiction to achievements made me let that mean whale chase me around for a small eternity hoping it would close enough to bite my face off. Once, it did kill me. Twice I got too far away and he reset. In the end, though, I was victorious! Mwahaha! As I sit here cackling like a lunatic and rubbing my bloodshot eyes, I bask in the glory of my kill. BWAHAHAHA

Easily solo-able by any ranged class, really. Took me a few tries (390 spriest) because of range problems where the Whale Shark evades.
Tips to avoid this:
-Dont kite too far away. Sweet spot for me was just a couple yard away from his nose.
-Try not to change much on the z-axis. Occasionally, I would go too high/low and he would evade and reset.
-Dont kite him away from his normal patrol area. For me, I found it easiest to just take him back and forth along the southeast area by the shell.
Good luck and happy hunting!

I think it would be easier if you did it as Protection with Retri gear on, you could also use the judgement glyph to increase damage. I suggest Retri 2 Piece bonus to keep inquisition up, whichever spec you decide to use.
This took me about 20 minutes, I think it can be done faster as a Ret if you used better glyphs.

Any ranged should be able to solo this, albeit a long battle awaits you. The only things you need to worry about is having him do his charge, hitting something, or pulling any mobs that may slow you. After research on multiple sites, here is a nice little explanation on how to avoid all of those issues and how to keep distance just right as a ranged attacker.
Before You Start:
He's pretty easy to find. The lowest marker on the map of Vashj'ir should put you near one.
(81.4,43.8 -- in
柯尔普萨之森
just east of Gnaws Boneyard)
. Just "/tar whale", you'll find him.
Range is crucial in this fight. It's a good idea to have some sort of range finder
(I use the one that comes with

. You want to make sure you're between 20-30 yards from him; this is because there is a possibility of him charging you, which increases his speed by about 50%. At that point he can catch up to you, and that is something we'll put in the "bad" column.
The next thing to keep in mind is direction. You want to stay just east of the land masses so as to avoid aggroing any extra mobs. I find it simplest to swim north and veer slightly west to start.
Step by Step:
Swim to with in range of the Whale Shark (23-30 yards) and shoot him in the face.
Start swimming backwards north veering slightly west.
Continue shooting him the face and ever so slightly tap "A" to start veering more north.
If at any point in time you hit 15 yards or lower OR you see him speed up, hold down "A" or "D" (or use your mouse) to spin around and swim away from him until you create a 30 meter gap. Once you have your gap, spin back around.
When you do your spins, keep an eye on your mini-map. You want to keep making a circle, adjusting it roughly 20° every couple of minutes. This will have you finished a full 180° at around half his life (with a DPS of 30K or so.)
Don't bother slowing him. Keep an eye on what DOT's work. You want max DPS, so don't waste your time on anything that doesn't work or is low damage.
Extra Notes:
Despite what some sites have said, the Whale Shark's charge is random. After dozens of battles, there has been no set of criteria that has consistently had him do it or not do it. (Other than....)
A caveat to the last statement, it has been found if you keep him trying to match depth, he never does a charge. Using this, I can say, that's a great theory. When you have a 25-30 yard gap, use "X" to go down and space bar to go back up. Don't do it a lot or the gap will close, but at the very least, it breaks the monotony of the fight a tiny bit.
People will say, "Stay on top of the water". With the spin tactic I mentioned, coupled with changing your depth, I stayed under to make both of these easier. If you do swim on the top and he catches up, trying to get away from him with constant camera changes can be a bit hard.
It's good to note that as of MOP 5.1, because of gear scores now, the Whale Shark doing less than 50K of overkill on my Marksmanship
猎人
. I would imagine anyone in full raid gear would be able to take a hit, I think there is some buffer to the damage done by Fatal Bite. This doesn't matter, but I'd like to know.
So, now you have your range finder, a Whale Shark, and a plan of attack. If this is your first shot at it, good luck; you're probably going to die. Keep trying.

Just solo'd as a L90 shadow priest, ilvl 487. It took 10 minutes and a lot of patience, but as a ranged caster you can easily do this fight taking zero damage and get the achievement by using the curse dot com addon called RangeDisplay. Keep the Whale Shark between 20-30 yards away from you for the entire fight and swim backwards in a straight line, no need to circle around him. Vash'jir is huge, so swimming backwards for 10 minutes doesn't get you very far and nowhere near the fatigue areas.
S.Priest Fight:
The first time I tried to fight him, I tried JerethKhan's suggestion down below. If the boss charges you, he hits for between 370-400k hp, hit me for 371k hp and nearly killed me. I tried to circle around him, then he feared me and bit my head off (not literally, but I was bloody floating corpse).
I downed him on my second try. I dotted up the shark with VT & SW:P, then swam backwards making my way to the surface and away from other mobs. For the rest of the fight, I only used Dispersion for mana regen, SW:P, Shadowfiend, Cascade and Mind Blast IF it proc'd. Focus on your instant damage casts only. There was one time I got too close to him per the range addon, turned around, and swam until I was at 30 yards. By the time I had turned back to face him, he had caught up to me in the 20-25 yard range. Rinse and repeat till he's dead. Good luck!

Soloed as a level 85 windwalker monk. Chi Blast, Expel Harm (glyphed) and Crackling Jade Lightning are key abilities. I swam within 30 yards range, used Lightning until he was at almost 5 yards, swam away while throwing Chi Blast on him. Repeated. Occasional expel harm in case I didn't build up enough chi to my liking and kited it around Nespirah. Wasn't hard, just time consuming. I pulled about 7k dps that way so expect it to take a while.

So my comment is just to help those who are having trouble finding the Whale Sharks to actually locate them without searching all over the ocean for them.
Okay, to find these guys (there are 2 of them) head to the Silver Tide Trench around Nespirah at co-ords 59,47, this will give you the best vantage spot to spot them when they swim by on their route, I've found. Be patient if they aren't there when you arrive, their route takes between 20 - 30 mins, roughly.
Beware, these guys have 9.5M health and will one-shot kill you if you aren't in a group.
I'm a lvl 86 Hunter, and I got my butt handed to me instantly, lol

Okay, so today i thought that i should do this ach on my lvl 90 dk, but didn't know how to start. So i checked WoWhead. Everyone said that you should be a ranged and totally not melee and kite with 5 85 'n %^&*. But I thought "Nah, I will make it." Since my char is pretty good when it comes to boss battles. When i found it (after 10 seconds) and got into the fight with my ghouls it took !@#$ing 350 k at first hit, i healed me and took vampiric blood but he killed me on his second hit with a crit on 950 k... I took 150 k hit points from him but he have 9 000 k. I tell ya, mon don't undirestimate tha powa of tha wowhead comments.

i killed this guy yesterday. i had been after him since i found out about his existence =p. no kiting whatsoever. I got 5 people from my guild together and we killed it. i had a monk and a druid healer. we killed him on the seafloor so that the monks statue of healing could heal me. I'm a blood death knight. Just pulled him with chains of ice, went to floor and tanked the mess out of him.

Yesterday I was bored in-game, so I decided to finally get the achievement, as I was too lazy before. Went with my fire mage, engaged boss, popped clones to get a high combustion on him, kited around spamming scorch, inferno blast and insta-pyros at him. Took about 2 mins. If you're ranged, in MoP this should not pose any sort of challenge.

Solo'd as afflock in MoP 5.3 on the second attempt. I noticed the following:
The whale shark swims almost as fast as I do (with
被烧毁的雕文
).
Use
to cast while moving/swimming.
Easiest rotation by far: DoT
and
(you don't have to face the target to cast these and they're instant),
鬼影缠身
if you're at least 30 yards away, then
while swimming away. You'll be almost 40 yards away by the time you have to apply your DoTs again.
Rinse and repeat until the whale shark mysteriously flops upside down underwater when dead.
Even better, use a Soulburn/Soul Swap macro to apply all three dots instantly without turning around. Then Haunt and Drain Soul. Drain Soul easily refreshes your Soul Shards so you can keep using this rotation. I use this simple macro:
#showtooltip Soul Swap
/cast Soulburn
/cast Soul Swap

Found this was rediculously easy in a group of 9 lvl90's - overkill really.
We had 2 DKs use army and were able to nuke it down.
We had 2 deaths but they still got credit for the kill. At only 10mil hp you can just brute force this now (something I didn't think would be possible what with the 1shottiness).

I did it very easily with my fire mage, it took about 2-3 minutes (I only used mirror image twice). My item level was 498 but it can be done with much lower item level since he never hit me, it would just take more time. I kept swimming backwards while facing the whale using my keyboard and clicking the spells with my mouse. I used scorch all the time since it can be used while moving and I used instant cast spells when available (inferno blast, combustion, pyroblast proc). I used the minimap to stay at a good range, I have Npcscan installed and I kept the whale target on the circular range line the addon makes on the minimap (make sure you have target enabled in your tracking). I only turned around to swim away from the whale a few times when I saw him getting close to me on the minimap. The key to soloing this fight is to constantly watch the minimap and making sure the whale stays at a good range from you. This was easier than I thought, good luck!

I did this in a duo group. Our kiter was a 90 frost mage, and our DPS was a 90 destruction warlock. (The mage had the higher ilvl, but it wasn't really a significant factor.) We used food bonus with haste,
Unending Breath
(with
Glyph of Unending Breath
) for faster swim speed, and
Arcane Brilliance
and
Dark Intent
blessings.
Mage: The reason the mage kited was because of the ability to
Blink
if the target got too close. The mage used
Time Warp
at the beginning of the fight and
Mirror Image
to allow a little extra time to set the range after the initial pull. The mage used
Ice Floes
to cast while moving and used
Frost Bomb
,
Frostbolt
,
Frostfire Bolt
(after the Frost Bomb), and
Ice Lance
. The Water Elemental had to be re-summoned a few times during the fight.
Warlock: The warlock used the Imp minion, which had to be re-summoned a few times, and kept a second Imp on cooldown with
Grimoire of Service
. At the start of the fight, the warlock put
Curse of the Elements
on the target and kept it active through the entire fight. The warlock used
Kil'jaeden's Cunning
to cast
Incinerate
while swimming and used
Conflagrate
as often as possible to help build up embers. Once four ember bars were built up, all were consumed with
Chaos Bolts
because they do massive damage. This cycle was then repeated.
All in all, it took us far less than five minutes to take him down once we got the hang of this strategy. We went for one of the ones near Nespirah and the Ruins of Vashj'ir in the Shimmering Expanse because it's a wide-open area. We made sure we weren't too close to Nespirah's shell or the canyon wall on the other side because we didn't want to get backed into a wall. Our mage kited in a wide circle, but this area would have allowed for a long kite in one direction as well.

I soloed it as a frost mage. I died a few times and lost my progress on it when distance or phase issues struck. I figured out a very specific way to beat it.
I pulled it from south-east of Nespirah, to the south. I started with Frost Bomb as soon as I got in range for it, just to throw in a bigger spell while I can, and after that I just kept swimming backwards, always facing it, and keeping us on the border of the zone. Leaving the Shimmering Expanse makes it disappear, swimming too far out starts fatigue.
The other trick that helped me was that I used Fire Blast when I could. It seems it has a perfect range to check if you are too far away. If I couldn't use it I momentarily stopped swimming, carefully getting back in range.
Between the Fire Blasts, if everything was peachy, I used Ice Lance and Frozen Orb. If the boss started charging, I used Mirror Image, if I was still in trouble I used Blink. Cauterize and Ice Block also helps when you are hit, provided Blink is not on cooldown yet. The minimap also helps to check if you are too close.
All this being said, you may die a few times even if you do everything right, but keep trying.

Good news, just solo'd this baby as a 565 feral druid, had to use survival instincts because he hits like a truck but damaged it as if I was killing a lvl 80 raid boss.
Think that the damage multiplier for soloing old raids also apply to the whale ;)

Solo'd as a disc priest. Took about 45 seconds. Kited him and just went nuts with

for good measure.
He never touched me, so I have no idea if he still hits as hard as he once did. But my DPS isn't great, so he's pretty easy to take down at this point.

Easy 10 achievement points.
To get there:
If you don't have the portal to vashj'ir, you can either pick up the first quest to summon the boat. Or you can just fly from the north-west corner of Dun Morogh, to the north-eastern part of Kelp'thar forest . Don't mind the warning. You should be able to get there. If not upgrade your flight speed.
Once there, you don't need the buff or mount you get in Vashj'ir. Just open your map, fly a few yards above the water, on the eastern side of Kelp'thar.
If you can't find him right away, make the following macro: /tar whale
Bind it to your hotbar and just press it every second, while flying. Eventually you will have him targeted.
Then all you have to do, is jump down in the water and kill him. As a prot pally 648 I just used my ranged abilities, and he didn't even make a scratch on my shiney armour.
After that you can either explore Vashj'ir, or use hearthstone. If you do want to explore, I recommend doing the quest line until you get the seahorse mount. With almost no competition you should be able to get it in 15-20 minutes.
Enjoy your new achievement.

Day late and a dollar short, but I will state the obvious anyway. EASILY soloable at 100. I did it with my destro lock today and the fight lasted less than 10 seconds. I found him just off the coast by sandy beach. He can be tough to catch up to if you are swimming so I will again state the obvious; once you have him targeted, mount, get up and out of the water and fly to him, then get in the water and take care of 'bidness'.

You may care to download my Rare Love add-on over at
WoW Interface
or
Curse
.
It is simply one macro for all your Squirrel "love", pest and rare achievements through to the end of MoP.
This achievement is also included, for sake of completeness!
You'll spam press a macro button created by Rare Love but when the add-on itself kicks in there is a whole lot more, including progress tallies after each kill/love.
Most importantly, it runs lean and clean. Little cpu/fps impact and a tiny memory footprint.

VERY easy 10 points. Even without being 273ilvl he is probably able to be oneshot by anything as long as you're caught up on gear (i.e. Korthia or ZM. Less than 300k health on this guy).
Also found East of the Kelp'thar forest just off the underwater dropoff.

Back when Cata was current, I solo'd this on my max level (at the time) mage by strafing (using the corner of his mouth as my center point) and casting Fire Blast... and it took 45 mins (not including three previous attempts when someone attempted to join me only for the whale shark to instantly kill them and reset its health).
Just now I did it on my max level demon hunter on a whim since I was down here to talk with the Lunar Festival elder. One shotted with Throw Glaive (which does piddling for damage).
