The soul drops underneath the Engine at the start of the fight. You have to catch it, and a few seconds later it launches itself a random direction up to 20 yards away, which has to be caught by a different person in the spirit realm. The soul then bounces back and forth between the realms, but requires two people alternating catching in each realm (4 total). Damage taken or abilities used do not interfere with the mechanic; you simply have to juggle it throughout the encounter.

The strat we used
Groups are Assigned
14Man+ Raid the larger the Better!
2 Healers in Each Phase
2 Bouncers in Each Phase
Preferred Class are Druids due to Feral Affinity
(though is not required)(
same person cannot soak twice which is why 2 are assigned)
DPS Will Hard Focus the adds in the corporeal (non spirit) Phase.
This is Priority as they do regular knockbacks
Spirit adds also need to be focus but can be interrupted regularly
Bloodlust will be used either on Pull
(to phase faster),
During Wailing
(as there is add downtime),
or at 30%
Note
Soakers and Healers must remain in Spirit Realm the entire fight
In last phase Tanks can move the boss to help but soakers should have immunities from healers if needed
How to
Pull boss he will spawn the orb

You need to stand in it to get the buff!
You will have an orb on you, run to the middle of the room
(this makes it easier to track)
The orb will fly up and in the
Spirit Realm

At the start of the fight a soul falls down and a player has to catch it by standing in the swirly yellow circle underneath the

After that, every 5 seconds the soul will be launched in a random direction and a player from the opposite realm has to catch it.
You will have to assign two people in each realm because the same person cannot soak two times in a row. The reason you do that is because if one of the players has the "soul" above their character that means they recently caught it and are unable to do it again until someone else from the same realm catches the soul.

Tips
To make soaking easier, assigned players have to be marked and once they catch the soul they should always move towards a marked position such as the center of the room.
Soakers should also watch out for the

We runing 30M groups these days, so sometimes spotting the next soak point was tricky given all the visual spell effects going on. Initially we had a soak group inside (Spirit Realm) and out (Live Realm). Soak group was selected for natural speed eg DH / Shammy etc + anyone with awesome armour speed set (like me).
BE VERY MINDFUL that there is an internal debuff preventing the same person in their respective realms soaking 2 in a row (you can see the small light on your head after a soak - when it's gone you are clear to resoak.
So, player who was soaking ran to the middle (like you would if you were doing spirit chains on Heroic) then called the direction and realm of the next soak point (we maked up the room with directional raid markers) eg. "I've got it - going IN towards Yellow!" (spirit realm soaker replies "I've got it" (runs to back to mid with orb) "Going Out towards Orange" as orb takes off.
We soon learned that in addition to the soak teams ANYONE should soak if they are literally next to the yellow swirl soak point. This helped out the soak team and effectively reset the internal debuff in that realm. When, we did this things became very smooth. OTT do the fight as you would for NM.
TLDR - the real key to this achievement is COMMUNICATION + everyone ready to soak if needed.

We had people in shadow realm to catch, however we managed to nuke the boss before this was needed. Got the achievement very easily this way.

Currently bugged and doesn't work. Soloing it as a 243 MM Hunter, I kill the boss while the orb still has 10+ seconds left and I don't get the achievement.

As of 9.1.5 I was able to solo as a BM hunter, decently geared (250ilvl).
At the very edge underneath the Engine of Souls there will be a yellow swirl at the start of the fight, you will have to stand in it. At the same time as you're doing that just full nuke the Engine and the 2nd boss (the Desolate Host) ASAP.
If you had enough DPS and got the swirly, you should get the achievement. Got it on my first try with ~100k DPS, fight was 13 sec long. Honestly have no idea if it was close or not.
This was done on normal difficulty.

New problem.. With gear from dragonflight you can now kill the engine so fast that it bugs and the desolate host never spawns. You end up trapped in the room with no option but to hearth out since there's no way to kill yourself.
If you reenter the instance you'll find that you now can no longer get back into the room since the blue barrier remained intact. You must wait until the weekly reset.

I've tried this on 2 different toons now and both times killed (apparently) too quickly to the point that while I still have the Diminishing Soul, I didn't get credit for the achievement. Anyone have any suggestions here? Is it just a balance to be sure you have enough gear to beat the timer before it bounces but not so much that it wiggs out and bugs? This is solo.

Easy Solo.
BM Hunter:
Walk up to boss (underneath) - Engage.
Step onto yellow swirly.
Kill boss. Kill boss again. (do this by BURST DPS and pets). Both will die in about 5 seconds.
