Current record seems to be 4 man to down Onyxia. 2 priests, warrior and rogue:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3913987439473738371&q=onyxia+4+man
Might be doable with 3 but it would still probably require 2 healers making your dps extremely low and the fight ridiculously long.

Onyxia is a three phase fight:
Phase one (100%):
- Immune to standard aggro tools. Sunders still work.
- Knockback to the front and back
- Fire breath to the front
- Standard melee attacks
Phase two (60%):
- Onyxia takes flight
- Complete aggro loss
- Fireball spits at random targets
- Whelp spawns related to quantity in raid
- Deep breaths kill for 4,000+ damage. (Frequency is related to clusters of people as well as too many or not enough DoTs/DPS)
Phase three (40%):
- Onyxia lands
- Immune to standard aggro tools. Sunders still work.
- Knockback to the front and back
- Fire breath to the front
- Standard melee attacks
- Lava spits. Stay off the cracks or they will burn you.
- Random fears. Frequently in conjunction with lava spits.
The biggest key to the fight is not taking aggro from the main tank. Everything else is trivial in comparison. Strategies for this fight are fairly standardized.

There have been loads of speculations about Onyxia. After killing her for almost two years now i have come to conclude a few things.
Phase 1 is very very very easy especially now with KTM Threat meater all people have to do is stay 10k threat (this is because every time she knockbacks the tank, the tank looses 10k threat) under the tank till 75% and then nuke her down to fall into phase 2.
A lot of people whine about her doing deep breadths (phase 2) because everyone is not spread out etc. This is just a myth. The only reason people should spread out is not to take aoe damage from the firebolt. I have two theroies why she does deep breadths. My first theory is that if you do a substantial ammount of dps on her in phase 2 meaning everyone is nuking the hell out of her (including rogues and warriors) she will not deep breadth. Another theory is that most people in the raid are not on her threat list since a lot of raid leaders want people to spread out and do nothing because most of the time she is not in range. Though if people use thier bows and run around a little bit just to hit once and be on that threatlist after she moves (every time onyxia moves in phase two aggro is reset) she will not but that would defy my first theory.
Third phase is the hardest but can be the most easiest this all depends on how fast and good your main tank is. If he does manage to pull onyxia stright away and gain fast ammount of threat from here on onyxia can be nuked down. I also have a speculation about her in the 3rd phase. Most of the time she fears a lot sometimes no. I have come to conclude that if there is a high ammount of dps on her in the second phase she will fear less than if there was no dps at all. So that is why its all up to the main tank. More threat = More Nuke = Less Fears = Killing her very fast. My guild at the moment kills her in about 3-4mins tops.

Farming Onyxia as 10-15 is great to get lots of gold. I killed her as 15 with my guild and each of us got lots of gold each. If you keep tryin to do it with your guild a few times it should be possible.

Well down Ony fairly consistently now. the first 2 phases are fairly routine and as the others have said.
Something we have found handy in the 3rd phase is if you have a main tank who is a blacksmith he can get this little trinket

With a 30sec anti fear it is bloody excellent. Works very well with stance dancing, fear isnt a problem.
Hope this helps.

The current theorycraft about Onyxia is Onyxia fireballs the top person on her threat list during Phase 2, and that her fireball is actually an aggro-wipe on the person it's targetted at.
Keep in mind this is just a theory, and except for major theorycrafters remains untested. How many people have claimed to know what causes Deep Breath, after all?

Neither hunter nor druid tank is required as above post stated. Has been done in the past with warrior tanks, and just a few days ago we did it without problem again, with 6 70s. (and my 64 alt) with no hunter, no druid. It was ridicusly easy.

Here's the truth of Onyxia:
Deep Breath is *random*. Every time she moves, she has a random chance to move clockwise, move counter-clockwise, or move straight across. If she moves straight across, she will use a Deep Breath attack.
Many people claim that Deep Breath is not random and that there is a clear cause for it. These people are wrong, but they are religious about this and will not be convinced otherwise. Do not waste your time arguing with them.
Deep Breath will not hit you if you are off to the side of her path as she flies across the room. Keep yourself in a safe position. That's all you need to know about Deep Breath.
There is a tunnel with openings on the east and west wings of the cave. It's full of whelp eggs. If you go in there, a lot of whelps hatch and cause trouble, so stay out.
Stay away from her tail. It might knock you into the whelp tunnel.
She has two knockback attacks. One of them will reduce the threat of a single target by 25%, so use a threat meter, and don't out-aggro the main tank. Also, tank her at the far north point of her lair, so that the tank gets knocked back into the wall.
Her Phase 2 fireballs cause a complete threat wipe to her main target, which causes considerable confusion at the start of Phase 3.
She has a PBAOE cleave, Flame Breath, and Wing Buffet that hit in front of her. Don't be in front of her unless you're the main tank.
The main tank should have some way to get out of the Fear, with Berserker Rage being commonly used.
She has no global threat wipe, only the two single-target threat reduction attacks.
Fire resistance is good. Stamina and damage is better. Defense and resilience is important for the main tank, to avoid big crits.

Druid tank not necessary, tanked it myself as a warrior. All I have to add is, without deep breaths, I'd say only the tank needs minor fire resistance, and even then can get away without it. Her flame breath hits for over 3k, be mindful of this.

TBH, your opinion on this matter seems at least as religious as the ones claiming there is a clear cause of it.
I'm personally quite sure that there are factors you can affect, but there is randomness in them aswell. What I can tell about them from my own experience is this:
-Cluster up the raid in one spot DOES NOT cause a DB. I've been doing her in the past with odd strategies, one included the whole raid in the same spot enitre phase 2. Several times I've done that with no DB's.
-Maintaining dps on her at sertain points, like when she turns, seems to affect the chance of a DB. So does the number of debuffs.

It is possible to two man Onyxia, specifically with an affliction warlock/holy paladin combination. The affliction warlock drain tanks, and the holy paladin heals. If you need details about how it has done, search for the video on Warcraft Movies.

From the dozens of times i've killed Onyxia pre-BC, i've come to a conclusion about Deep Breath.
1 - It's on some sort of timer. For instance, she won't deep breath 5 seconds after she takes off. The timer could be linked to her %HP. Either way, i've never heard of a raid getting Breathed on right at the beginning of phase 2.
2 - Regarding DOTs on Ony preventing Deep breath, I think it's false. The strategy I used in the countless Pugs i did pre-BC, we always emphasized to the ranged dps to go balls to the wall, and for all classes with DOTs or ranged dps to nuke her.
Basically, Full DOTS = Everyone is DPSing = Onyxia Dies Faster = Phase 2 is over quicker
^^^ This could also be the reason we would often get 0 deep breaths, because we had sufficient DPS to beat her "Breath Timer"
3 - Spreading out doesn't do #$%^. People only did it so fireballs wouldn't suck so bad.

A sl/sl warlock and I(resto druid) two manned her yesterday. We both have full s3, and it was fairly easy. The hardest part was keeping the Whelps under control. It took about 40 minutes, and we got 64g a piece. If you are attempting to try this with a warlock, I suggest you do not use soul link, it is plenty easy to keep a warlock up with just Fel Armor.
She was hitting my warlock for about 1500 whites and her fire breath was doing about 3k. Not to bad at all.

3 maned by 3 healers: 1 holy Paly trying hard to tank (yeah negative aggro due to knockbacks...) and two resto shaman. 46 minutes later she went down.
From our experience their is almost no difference between healing a holy pally in prot gear and a resto shaman in resto gear. Honestly, even a (decently equipped) mage could tank Onyxia if you have good healers.
If you 5-man her with a "regular" setup she goes down very fast and rewards a considerable amount of money and resources.

For anyone that is yet to be convinced about what Kathucka posted about Deep Breath earlier, Blizzard have actually confirmed that it's random at this point. It works just like Kathucka explained. The lead designers were asked about it in an interview while discussing the development of WoW and said it was random.
As a fun fact, they also mentioned a change to another part of the encounter leading to more deep breaths for a brief period of time allthough it still worked the same way as before (random). This was after the first claims of "more deep breath" however ;)
As for an actual tip on the fight a lot of people tend to focus on her facing the first time. She will allways breath diagonally across the room regardless of what player she is currently facing. Pay attention to her position in the room, not what way she is looking.
She will move
OR
use deep breadth every 20-25 seconds, so reposition as soon as you see where she's going so you'll be ready if she chooses to use Deep Breath instead of moving next time.

Just soloed by BM hunter and resto druid (14/09/08), took about 37mins to bring her down.
Pet's tanking position is important on this fight, u should move your pet so u wont get hit by cleave, tail swipe or flame breath, 1st phase is easy, save mana and let pet build aggro.
On the 2nd phase u need to always see where Onyxia is flying so u can avoid getting hit by Onyxia's breath, which will lower ur health quite a bit if not even kill u. First wave of adds need to be taken down and druid can keep up healing even with 4-5 adds on him, when druid gets too many adds, hunter just nuke some down but mainly DPS on Onyxia. Phase 2 will be done basically if u can avoid Onyxia's Breath. In phase 3 u need need to avoid getting feared to the hatching eggs and the lava dmg that comes from the ground, between the rocks. That is basically it, then u get to enjoy the loot which was atleast for us 95g both, 3BoE rares and 6nexus crystals =D This far the most fun boss fight i've had, since i didnt get to enjoy pre-TBC raiding :)

Confirmed. In hindsight, it really is a massive, complicated chain, and it's such a shame that so many players who are going to become Death Knights and learning Inscriptions and headed to level 80 to fight Arthas have never even seen the inside of MC or BWL, let alone Onyxia. So I understand the lifting. But it's still a shame, nonetheless. I'll miss the Jailbreak. =*)

I can see a lot of people coming back for the Achievement, Gold, possible twink blue BOE's, and the Onyxia Hide Backpack(s). Most of the epic drops are going to go to a vendor or disenchanter.
However...
If you are someone who still sees an 18 slot bag as an upgrade, make sure the Master Looter is set to uncommon or the Onyxia Hide Backpack can be looted accidentally (or intentionally) by someone with auto-loot option selected.

As of 3.0, I was capable of soloing her as a holy paladin in BT/Hyjal/early SWP gear. A few notes:
- I wore the fire resist gear you can get from badges and the phoenix-fire band from the obsolete TK attunement chain. With that and the fire resist aura, I was running at 307 FR. According to a WWS analysis, this prevented roughly 68% of the incoming fire damage, which is far more important, since the physical damage is fairly trivial.
- I also used the trinket from the Ashtongue Deathsworn. The majority of my damage was going to be from judging Seal of Vengeance, so a 50% chance at a DoT that I'd be shooting for every ten seconds was a huge boon. Ultimately, it accounted for ~10% of my damage.
- For my second trinket, I used the Commendation of Kael'thas. The idea was that during phase 2 the proc might be helpful if the whelps got me too low, but that ended up being a non-issue.
My general strategy was to tank her in the back of the room where she'd typically be tanked anyway. I used Seal of Vengeance and judged Wisdom on cooldown. For healing, I used Holy Shock whenever it was up--most of the melee damage was insignificant, and the breath attack only hit for ~1.6k, so it was plenty to keep me up. I did not bother with Consecrate.
Phase 2 I was concerned about, but it turns out you can indeed still melee her from the ground if you're directly beneath her. I changed my aura to Retribution Aura to help deal with the whelps. For the initial spawn, I ignored Onyxia and concentrated on getting them down. Once that was done, I simply followed her around the room, using the same attack pattern. I didn't bother avoiding deep breaths--again, they were mitigated to the point of irrelevance, doing maybe 3-4k damage apiece. I largely ignored further whelp spawns and just started using consecrate when I had a lot on me.
Because I was occasionally forced to use consecrate, this was the only phase that gave me mana trouble. Whenever I'd get below 30% or so, I'd switch to Seal of Wisdom and just melee it all back to full.
Phase 3 was pretty much identical to phase 1 (including switching back to fire resist aura). The fear lasted such a short time that it was more of a minor inconvenience to have to run back to my initial place (I still didn't want to get punted into whelps). Also, it'd disable auto-attack, which was annoying. Again, since the eruptions were fire damage, they were immaterial.
In the end, it ended up taking me an hour and 45 minutes to down her with my elite holy paladin dps. In all honesty, it wasn't very difficult from a technique standpoint, just incredibly tedious.

2 Manned her last night, me and my brother, He was on his 80 DK, and I on an 80 Hunter. I reckon he could solo it as a Death Knight when he gears up a bit more. We are both in a mix of Normal and Heroic Instance gear.
Looked a little hairy at times and I will mention that I used about 4 Heavy Frostweave bandage and can confirm that in her air phase I saved all my CD's to get her down ASAP. During this time I pulled aggro a few times and was getting hit from her for about 2k per shot.
Was good fun and although we are level 80 now still felt good to down her as a duo. We each got about 120g each after selling unwanted loot to the vendor, although you could try and shift the 2 BoE blues she drops on the AH.... I didn't have time.
Hunter was BM/MM Hybrid, DK was Unholy.

I really suggest everyone give it a shot solo or with 1 friend. It's a lot of fun because it used to take 40 people and the gold is really worth it :)
For those that have never done the Ony fight before, when she's in phase 2 and flying, you can still melee her as if she were on the ground, just stay close enough.
The amount of whelps she spawns is very easily dealt with, almost any minor AoE will take them down in a few seconds.
good luck and have fun!

I just downed her on my 80 prot pally, was a 50 minute fight and I made something over 150g (direct drop). Plus got 3 blues, 2 greens (boe), and then of course the epics. I got a tank ring, shaman helm, hunter helm, her head of course and the bag.
Plus, I got my achievement.
Next up, I try to solo all of MC, though not sure how that will go. Think I need the quest still to put out fires so I can summon Rag in the end, without him the run would be pointless, but I don't remember how to do the entire quest chain...

Just solo'd as an 80 Prot Paladin in full badge, heroic, and a few Naxx10 loot, took 21 minutes. Buffed myself with BoSanc, and Righteous Fury, with Fire Resist Aura.
Just used SoW and JoL, Phase 1 and 3 rotation were pretty much Judgement of Light, Shield of Righteouness, Hammer of the Righteous, maintained 100% health mana wasn't an issue.
Occasionally I would throw up Seal of Vengeance after using Divine Plea for some extra DPS at no loss to mana.
Only time I came close to trouble was phase 2, where I used Seal of Light, Judgement of Light, had to mana pot once, then started using about 5 whelps to regen mana (from BoSanc) if I got more then 5 whelps I'd consecrate to burn em down quick. Other then that it was repeating everything above. Dropped 185g, Priest/Pally healing helm, Ring of Binding, Deathbringer, the normal loot, and a couple greens/blues. Only reason I posted this was the time it took me to do it, 21 minutes, sustained 1039dps.

Solo'd as a BM hunter (51/20) with a Devilsaur pet using Elixir of Mighty Fortitude and Mighty Agility. Took about 15 minutes to kill with me spending most of phase 2 either feigned or shadowmelded in order to avoid her constant fireball spam. Dropped 183g, collar, hunter and warrior helmets and some blues. Exotic pets can easily solo tank her and adds so the main thing to focus on for me was staying alive through her firebreaths and the whelp spawns. FD underneath her and keep bandaging right after she starts casting fireballs on your pet in order to get the most out of a bandage. Phase 3 is again cake, just keep mend pet up as needed and shoot away.

Finally managed to solo her as an Unholy DK (deep build upto Unholy Blight) , it was an rather epic & frustrating fight. Due to not being able to see her couple of times (thanks whelps) and being chain feared on phase 3.
Against first whelp wave i dropped down AMZ & heavy AoE trying to kill them as fast as possible. Then chased down Onyxia to heal myself. I used Army of the Dead while using IBF against 2nd whelp wave, the last ones i basically killed with diseases spread from onyxia (pestilence), DnD, Unholy Blight while only meleeing Onyxia.
When onyxia landed somewhere along the battle i pulled an add (Warden) -50dkp! .. but still managed to win. I used my gargoyle & ghoul during the flight phase and summoned both of them at the end.
I think it all depends how lucky you get with Deep Breaths, my earlier attemps all failed to those when she was chain casting them, like 3 in a row from side to side, yes that was rather painfull. Maybe people dont give her much credit when they say "it was easy" but i think it was pretty rough all in all.
Other tips - Glyph of Death & Decay is very nice agaisnt whelps & Glyph of Death Strike for that extra healing, you might need it. Ghoul & Gargoyle, you should use them during the flight phase where aggro is switching so that you dont always get hit with fireballs. Use IBF/Bone Shield instantly when they come available during Phase 2 but not at the same time of course. Corpse Explosion does work from whelp corpses!.

Phase 2 was harder, you need to stay immediately under her to be able to hit her with melee attacks. Swipe the adds and pop out to heal when there are no adds around, even if you still have plenty of health. Innervate if needed. Phase 3 is back to tank and spank. Annoying with all the fears, but managed (barely) without having to pop out and heal. Would probably be possible to heal with barkskin if you start just after a fear.
Reward was 160 gold + some epics/blues that vendored for another ~20 gold and an 18 slot bag. Not bad for 20 mins work. Too bad it can only be done once a week^^
In tank gear I got about (unbuffed):
29 K armor
27K hp
33% dodge
Quest blue gear with the trollwoven items, Polar boots and two Naxx10 drops (neck and pants).
I imagine the fight would be rather trivial with some fire resist gear. I guess it will also be easier in the next patch with PotP not needing a group to work.

Completed in less than 13 minutes by an assassination specced rogue and a holy paladin (both 80). Dropped one bag, 2 BoE blues, a green tailoring recipe and the pally and rogue helmets.
Pretty straight forward.. neither of us knew any of the phases so I (rogue) just slapped her around with my back against the wall. When the adds came we just rounded them up and used carpet + FoK. She dropped around ~140g, so not a bad way to make 70g for less than 15 minutes ^^.

Well, I went in there today, to check how much significance 80 has on her. Took me seconds over 30 mins to down her alone. (Protection Paladin) I had Heroic loot on.
Seemed quite a personal achievement, if there's any Prot Paladin's wanting to solo her, I reccommend during her flight phase to pull eggs on purpose to get mana back from Blessing of Sanctuary, then you can basically have infinite mana for heals on her Breath.

I assume I have to stay inside the room? I went out to bandage while my pet was tanking her and she used "Breath" (not Flame Breath, just Breath) on me and my pet for like 20K damage.
Other than that my pet (cat) does a good job of tanking her, so I can just stand and mend pet (I tend to draw aggro if I attack too much).

as a 78 retadin with just over 17k hp and 5.2k mana, i soloed onyxia. used judge of light, seal of wisdom (trust me, keeping max mana is a must) and just wailed on her for about 20 mins straight. keep fire resist aura up (mines 130+ resist and it brought down her flame breath dmg to about 1.k-1.5k dmg and her fire balls to 700-1k dmg). her drops were unbelievable to say the least. 188g, cool, 18 slot bag, cool, her head, cool, sinew, stupid but cool, and then....JUDGEMENT CROWN x 2! ah ma gad i cant believe it. names smitteypally, darkspear server, ally side. i will prove to you if you are skeptical.
-smitteypally, oh so happy (btw, dont tell any one in any channel or all you will get is demeaning remarks on how it was soloed at 70, and how its nothing big, and how you are a failure any ways, but screw them! :D )

She can now be soloed very easily by a Feral Tanking Druid with a decent wotlk heroic gear. I swear that's very easy for a feral druid ...
It took me around 15minutes, just put on your tanking gear, go ahead in bear and just hit her with full stack of lacerate, spam mangle, or whatever you want.
You'll need to heal yourself about every 1-2minutes, just use frenzied regeneration, or use barkskin and heal yourself with healing touch. She hits for 1k in humanoid form.
For the fly phase (65% > 40%) thats the longest part ... Just stay under her hitzone so you can hit her, when whelps come, spam swipe and it will be very quickly over. She will spam you her breath, thats not a problem, you will resist nearly the half of the damage, and if you have more then 30k hp i will no be a pain at all, just heal yourself like in phase 1 with barkskin.
Phase 3 (40% > 0%) Start again the phase 1, she will just fear you, that's very annoying but it's not a pain. Heal you again the same way of phase 1 and 2.
Congratulation ! You're awarded 160 gold, 2 T2 heads, some blue AH items, and a 18 slot bag ! (and the head of onyxia and dragon sinew that you can delete T_T)

Soloed as 80 ret in WotLK blues, was quite easy. Here's what I used:
Fire Resistance Aura
Divine Plea
Seal of Wisdom
Elixir of Mighty Strength
Grilled Sculpin (60 AP/40 Stam)
Basically relied on Sacred Shield/Art of War, and when Flash of Light critted Sheath of Light took care of any dmg I took for its duration. As for the whelps I just consecrated.
Very easy fight, goodluck to those who try!

Soloed as feral druid, lvl 80 33k life, 25k armor. 3/5 tier7.
Pretty easy for a geared feral druid. Spam your barskin at the cd's, keep a demo roar on her and use ur frenzied regeneration every time ur life drops under 12-10k and ur rage is more than 60. (keep hitting her or the whelplings to ensure u wont run out of rage) It is really important that u wont be affraid to shift out and heal ur self. -Thats why i died the 1st time i tried. Even if she is hitting u, the damage that u ll take its nothing compared to the healing u can do. start with a couple of lifeblooms, regrowth, rejuvenation and 1 or 2 nourish. Onyxia will hit u for arround 3k while doing this but the ammount healed will be around 15k hp. On air phase this will be even easier. Spam swipe the whelplings and they will die after 3 or 4 swings. You might find it hard to target the boss and hit it while in air phase. A good idea is to set focus on her and run towards her spamming feral charge. By the time u will get in range, charge and start nuking. Don't forget your survival insticts if things go hard and a usable trinket if u have one. The fight for me lasted about 12-15 mins and since u have so many skills to use, it never becomes boring. Give her a shot and get some easy money :)

I solo'd Onyxia yesterday (December 16th, 2008) on my enhancement shaman. At the time, my gear consisted of about 50% Naxxramas epics with the rest being items from heroics or questing.
The tricky part was, in my humble opinion, the second phase when she goes airborne. However by steering clear of the occasional Deep Breaths and killing off the whelps as quickly as possible, it is very doable.
On 8000 armor she hit for about 1000 damage. Her Flame Breath (Phases 1 & 3) hit for up to 4000 and during the airphase her Fireballs hit for about 1800 fire damage.
Due to the high amount of fire-based attacks I used Fire Resistance Totem at all times and it cut the fire damage taken roughly in half.
The fight took about 18 minutes, but I probably could have done it alot faster (I had some mana management issues due to the fact that I forgot to rebuff Water Shield for the majority of the fight.) I summoned my wolves as soon as I could in order to put healing aside for raw damage for a short period of time.
I do not recall exactly how much gold dropped but for 18 minutes work I'd say it is worth doing every reset. (Remember that you get an eighteen-slotted backpack aswell as some classic epics, blues and random gems.

I JUST soloed Onyxia. As a 50% Naxx10man gear and some Heroic epic gear, it took about 15-20mins to down her.
Didn't have the exact time on it. But 1.099mil HP is too easy.
Hits for 400-500 per hit and breath for around 3k-3.5k in phase 1.
Having the Death strike glyph makes it really easy, and the Death and Decay glyph.

Enh Shaman guide to soloing Onyxia:
(First off, I'm an 80 Tauren Shaman in almost all epics; 3000 AP, 25% crit, 17k HP. Your mileage may vary)
First, make sure that both of your weapons have Windfury, since: a) Onyxia is immune to Flametongue and Lava Lash, and b) you want it proccing as often as possible to keep Maelstrom Weapon ready in order to heal yourself.
Phase 1: Tank her at the back of the room, just like the old days. FR totem is basically a must. Pretty much the only ability I used at this point was Stormstrike to conserve mana, with the occasional Earthshock in hopes of proccing
Elemental Devastation
. I was taking about 900-1100 damage a hit, but was easily able to keep myself up with Greater Healing Wave. Make sure that you are keeping your Water Shield up, and don't waste Maelstrom Weapon procs on anything but healing yourself.
Phase 2: Switch to Lightning Shield and run into the middle to gather the whelps. Drop an Earth Elemental Totem to get a few seconds of breathing room, and then summon your wolves. The healing from the wolves should easily overcome the damage from the whelps. Clean up survivors with melee, and then put back your regular totems/Water Shield.
As she flies around, Onyxia will drag you away from your FR totem, keep it up and just DPS when you can. The smaller whelp groups are easily dispatched with melee.
Phase 3: Pull her back to the wall and drop Tremor totem. Repeat phase 1 strat, making sure to keep refreshing the totem. Earn easy gold. Note! Don't make my mistake and try and tank her where she lands, lest her wing buffet toss you over the wall, into the eggs, which is of course 50 DKP minus. Wiped at 4% my first try because of that; don't get too %^&*y!

i did a duo with my friend and we had too figure out how too kill her so we tryed the followoing
1. running around letting my pet tank that did'ent last until about 700k
2. we tryed wiping adds on forth turn while she randomly shoots fireballs that lasted till 648k
3. the best way we found is i can send pet on her in sky at about 40%-50% and then she started too land from my pet dealing fast aggro and we had too start dpsing quick so the best thing too do is dont try and get her while shes flying if ur a hunter let ur pet do that so u cna deal with the adds

Unfortunately at the begining of BC blizzard made the buff only buff people that are around 65 and below. If you were below 65 and didnt get the buff, the head was already hung when you turned in the quest.

Easily soled as a Prot pally, in 10 man nax gear. Also doable with decent blues. Make sure you have fire resist aura up. All you do is pull only into a whelp area, with Blessing of Sanctuary there's going to be ALOT of mana coming back due to all of the blocks. But be careful, whelps can be overwhelming so make sure you keep consecration down.
Phase 2 take forever not much can be done about that. Also is a major pain in the ass, when a bunch of whelps get your mana back and kill them asap. Might have to heal a couple times during this phase too.
Phase 3 she starts fearing, a real pain if your in a good spot and she fears you out or deeper down the whelp path so don't get to far in there or you'll be overwhelmed very quickly.
Fight took me roughly 25 min.

it took me one hour and 15 minutes to kill her, it waws relieving when she finally was down.
phase 2 was without doubt the hardest, and by hard i mean the slowest. the whole fight was actually easy, just did seal of wisdom and judgement of wisdom, and healed myself once i was below 7k hp. then keep normal hitting him, if you got enough mana to spare do a couple of special abilities, divine plea was my biggest friend here, i didnt had to bubble once.
she dropped 3 boe`s, 2 heads from t2 and 169g, pretty nice

At 80, it's recommended to kill her every reset, as she drops a lot of money.
150-200g in pure money loot
Chance to drop a "Sack of gems". These vanilla WoW gems can sell for an insane amount of money on the AH (maybe 100g+).
The blues/epics sells for some money (about 3g to vendor).
Has a good chance on dropping Orb of Deception which can sell on the Auction house for 1000g!
Not only that, but it's fun too!

Level 80 Ret Paladin, Brightstar on Doomhammer, Partial 10 Naxx gear/Heroic Gear, wasn't too difficult actually, almost solo'd her when I was 70 but caught a bad Deep Breath and then instance got bugged (3.0 patch good times there to be had for all) and didn't go back to try again till now. Seal/Judge Wisdom kept my mana up just fine, Art of War proc heals for the most part. Only took about 12 min or so. Nice 159 Gold in my pocket each week now. :)

Soloed as a 50/0/21 Blood DK with a few naxx and heroic epics, and took just 11 mins, way better than doing dailies, 150g + in such a short period of time.
Absurdly easy, keep diseases up and keep healthy with deathstrike, in phase 2, she's still meleeable, cept you've to chase her around the cave. Antimagic shield and Icebound fortitude are useful in limiting damage intake in phase 2, which is when a blood dk is the most vulnerable due to her flying out of the range of our lifesucking abilities.

).
The fight itself wasn't very hard, i might even say its soloable for non-heal & non pet classes.
Phase 1 was pretty easy even tough we were low on dps it went out quite fast!
Phase 2... okay this was a little harder - Our priest died and with a 5k mana tankadin no heals were avaible exept trinkets etc. I think it was the breath, hitted him for 12k he said and he had adds on him so he died. Always keep adds from healer!. So me and pally back, i went to get some healing trough my diseases and Death Strike!
Phase 3.. again tank n spank did that fear thing but no problems, was inactive a sec and pally had to do lay on hands else we would wipe - Finished her off, looted 139g and some T2 Helms (Warlock &&' Paladin) some random blues and the head which our healer got :) quite easy basically 2 manned, uploading pic of us in front of head in org.

she is rather easy to solo as DK...but also is most, if not all pre-bc content, up to MC-Bwl-AQ. The fight it self takes close to 14-15minutes for me to solo her, the hardest phase is phase 2, just because the magic dmg is only mitigated through anti-magic shell, and i dont use frost P. Good luck to all those up and coming Dks, its a nice way to rack up achievements and get some gold.

We did this tonight with 4 guildies.
1 level 80 protection warrior
1 level 74 restoration shaman
1 level 74 arcane mage
1 level 77 beastmaster/marksmanship hunter
We didn't really know what to expect so just decided to treat her like a standard mob type.
The first phase was just tank and spank. Not much healing was required.
Then she took flight and started to bomb the area with some fire attacks. In addition the whelps came. We didn't really know if we should wait it out of if we had to kill all the whelps. So at times the pally ran in to grab a couple of whelps from the side which the mage took down pretty easily.
The hunter kept firing at the dragon.
The fire from Onyxia did quite some damage to us so had to heal up a couple of times as well.
At some point the dragon landed again. No idea if this had to do with her being under a certain % or if it was just time for it to come down.
The dragon used fear now but a Tremor totem helped a lot to reduce it.
The rest was just tank and spank all over.
Easy fight ofcourse. 35g for each of us.

Used the FoL glyph but if anything that hindered me, pretty easy cept phase 2 was kinda long and boring and the hardest part of the fight was to heal myself.
It took 37minutes and a prot mate started soloing at the same time and gave up due to boredom saying he was blocking or dodging almost everything.

Easily solo'd by a prot pally in Heroic/Naxx10 gear. Takes about 20 min and you get ~200g in loot and epic vendor trash.
No fire resist needed, just the aura. Sacred Shield will take care of you during phase 2, and isn't really even needed in phase 1 and 3. The only problem is running out of mana, so I try to keep whelps on my as much as possible during phase 2 to get the BoS mana returns

Just finished killing her for this reset. Pretty sure I could solo it, but as a holy pally I really don't want to keep someone else locked in a raid group for upwards of a hour. So I take a DK friend with me. During phase 1 and 3, I don't know what he does but I use seal of wisdom and judge light. I put beacon on me and throw a heal on him whenever he needs it. I just keep dpsing the boss until phase 2 starts. During phase 2, I stand under her and keep judging, holy shocking and shield bashing her and healing my DK friend while he deals with the whelps. I keep fire resist aura on and 10 minutes later, if it is even that long, we are both 78g richer and have vendor loots.

Solo as a resto shaman in naxx gear. Never ran in to mana issues with 328 Mp5 and T7 2 piece set bonus.
Phase 1: She doesnt hit hard with any of her abilities; a riptide was good enough to keep me up while i spammed lightning bolt. Feel free to throw in a shock every now and then. She's still immune to fire so your flame shock and lava burst are pretty much useless. Tank her on the far north wall.
Totems: Stoneskin, Mana Spring, Flametongue, WoA
Weapon enchant: Fametongue weapon
Phase 2: Keep all totems down at a distance since she will occasionally target them instead of you for a fireball. Wait until 5+ whelps are on you then use magma totem. Continue lightning bolt spam. A simple riptide and an occasional LHW was enough to keep me up. Remember to top yourself off when she does her deep breath just incase you get hit.
Do not place your totems near the entrance or you may aggro the trash pat.
Phase 3: Same as phase 1 just switch out your stoneskin totem for a tremor totem.
P.S.Use your Bloodlust/Heroism whenever you can. I took me 30 min total.

Tough but very doable as a level 80 feral druid with level 80 blues and a scattering of crafted epics (I've been really unlucky in naxx, vault etc so far).
First phase no problem at all - jut tank her up against the back wall of her room like in the level 60 days - she doesn't hit very hard at all. If your health is an issue here then give up now - Phase 2 will toast you.
Second phase - As soon as she takes off shift out and heal up to max - then shift back into bear and swipe whelps till they stop coming
Believe it or not it is possible to stand under ONY and hit her while she's flying, so you don't need a ranged attack. Just move under her until your mangle un-greys out and hit her for all you are worth - you are going to need to follow her around a lot. I found mouse wheeling in to FIRST PERSON perspective made it MUCH easier to see where she was when meleeing and when more whelps came I mouse wheeled back to regular, swiped them dead and returned to first person.
She's going to hit you with a lot of fireballs and a few deep breaths. Fireballs aren't a huge deal, Deep breath knocks off about 1/4 of my max health. It's a good idea to choose a whelp-free time to barkskin-shift out and heal up - try to keep your health above 10,000 (preferably higher) at all times because you can get stuck with a nasty situation of low health, many whelps and a deep breath all at once. If you get stuck here use your frenzied regen (save it for this sort of occasion). Keep beating her down till she lands - this is by FAR the most difficult phase, once you get her on the ground again you should be home free.
Third Phase - tougher than phase 1, you might be low on health at this stage - If so, pop your berzerk, pop barksin and shift out and heal up. Berzerk is far more valuable here to prevent fears during some important post-phase2 heals.
Otherwise just dps her till dead.

Just soloed as a level 80 human ret paladin in a mix of Naxx10 and Heroic gear. About 18500 health, 3.2k AP, and 28% crit. Whole fight took about 15 minutes.
I started with Retribution aura, and then played it safe with Fire Resist Aura beginning in Phase 2. I popped
Divine Plea
every time it came up and with every
Art of War
proc, I tossed myself an instant cast Flash of Light. I went into the fight with Blessing of Wisdom to keep up with the mana regen and Judgement of Light for the healing. I also used
Seal of Command
. Less DPS, but I didn't want to hurt myself anymore than I had to with
Seal
and
Judgement of the Martyr
. Throughout the fight, I only had to bubble once and used two bandages (one bandage in the bubble, and the other at the beginning of phase 2 as she was taking to the air). For Phase 3,
Every Man for Himself
was helpful for the Bellowing Roar, but with a two minute cooldown, it wasn't something I relied on (or even needed to).
She did Deep Breath once during phase 2, but it only knocked off about 20% of my health (resists from Fire Resist Aura certainly helped). The whelps were easy enough, and were actually beneficial for the extra healing from
Divine Storm
.
All in all, this is something I plan on every week now. She dropped 170 gold for me plus all the cash I made from vendoring her drops.

i had no problems in phase 3, only my patience was running out. took me about 16 minutes to down her, but i made 190g + the epics and a 18 slot bag ( i cheaped out on buying 18 slots, so now im just gonna clear ony till i have all 18 slot bags :D)

Was a lot of fun, and will do it again a few more times on my hunter, and perhaps even try to solo her with my Priest, Shaman, and Death Knight in the near future.

Just soloed her as a fury warrior. Used Bloodthirst + glyph for it, enraged regen and bandages in maxhp gear to outheal her dmg. Phase 1 and 3 are cake but phase 2 was rather tough.
Dropped only 58g :/. Warriors got buff, so they had to nerf the loot this time.

Could anyone confirm that the gold she drops has been decreased? I just killed her a minute ago with my Paladin, and only got 60 gold, instead of the 140-180 she usually drops
EDIT: Didn't see there was more than 1 page of comments. Seeing as xBladex only got 51g as well, it seems that she has been nerfed
EDIT 2: Apparently all of the older bosses have had their gold reduced with patch 3.0.8, and it seems that they had all been reduced by 66%(2/3).
I just killed five bosses in Zul'Gurub as well, and they all dropped 20g instead of the 60 pre-patch

Soloed as a level 80 BM Hunter with a tenacity pet (Worm level 80) with tanking talent point's. I downed her after 15 min and 23 sec, it was really tricky in phase 2, cause you can get out of that Fireball that hits you for 1500 - 2000 Fire damage, but if you can Feign Death a lot so she only hits the pet.
Tactic's:
Phase 1 just put your pet next to a wall and you have to stay on her left/right side or you will get hit by her aoe Flame Breath. Get Omen3 so you know when you have to much agro over the pet. But when you do have much agro over the pet just Feign Death, after that use all you got Rapid Fire Beastial Wrath, trinket's after they are all down Feign Death again so you can keep as small agro as posibble.
Phase 2: Put your pet on her so the pet can dps her (or else you wont get to phase 3) and you just have to run around, but be carefull cause if you are active she will target you and hit you, but you have to kill the Whelps also, so when Whelps spawn Explosive Trap and Volley hard with Aspect of the Dragonhawk so you can do more damage, after that quick Feign Death so Onyxia wont hit you. After you kill Whelps use First Aid fast.
Phase 3: Same as at Phase 1 just dps hard and she will get down really fast now.
On the this fight you just have to keep Mend Pet at all time so your pet dosent die or else.
Wealth: 54 Gold, 32 Silver, 77 Copper.
Onyxia's Head is a quest item and it got me 84 silver, and 342 reptutation with Stormwind.
I recommend you to use a tenacity pet cause they are tanking pet's so they can keep much better agro then other pet's, i've tried soloed her with Survival spec but its harder.
Hope you can down her easyer now.

After 3.0.8, Onyxia drops roughly 55g in coin (down from the ~150g that people were reporting prior to the patch). She does still drop two 18-slot bags, though, in case anyone's still making do with Netherweave Bags in their bank slots or whatnot.
As an 80 ret pally in terrible gear (level 78 blue crafted PvP set with a couple of ilvl 200 epics) this was a difficult solo. If your AP isn't up to snuff then you will need to FoL yourself at almost every opportunity (meaning whenever Art of War is up). You need to make sure your health stays above 50% or so because you will need to blow Divine Plea whenever the cooldown is up. (I tried it once using Judgement of Wisdom, but found I actually ended up with more mana--and more success--using Judgement of Light to help keep myself alive.) The fight took about 17 minutes, meaning (at least if your gear is bad like mine) that you will have enough time to bubble more than once should it prove necessary. Fire Resistance Aura was a must; don't even worry about the slight loss of DPS inherent in not using Retribution Aura.
The most troublesome aspect of the fight, from a ret paladin's point of view, is keeping within melee range during phase 2. Since the camera angle is less than ideal (you either can't see Onyxia, or you can't see the whelp adds) I kept Onyxia targeted the whole time and used the damage numbers to judge where Onyxia's hit box was.
Maybe not the greatest way to make some gold anymore, but it's still hard to turn down 55g plus vendor epics (and a shot at arguably the most distinctive piece of pally gear in the game, the tier 2 helm). Good luck!

Death Strike and Rune Tap is VERY important here if you're under level 80... But after about 30-40 minutes I brought her down, and got the last gold for my flying mount... Not sure if it's worth the 10 achievement points and 80g, cuz in the 40 minutes I could get 200gold and 1 level from quests...Anyway this is a very fun instance and I really love the tactics of this boss!

Its possible to solo Onyxia as a lvl 80 Resto Shaman (0/14/57)
- Pvp specced
Stats unbuffed : 15885 Hp, 18396 Mana, 25,13 Spell Crit, 268 Haste, 293 Mp5, 2190+ Healing and 15149 Armor
It took me 42 min, and didnt use any pots or flasks, but only food.
My Lightning Bolt, Frost Shock and Earth Shock were mainly resisted or missed, do the damage goes slow.
When whelps come, its farily easy to use Magma totem, they arent immune to fire, and only got 2,6k hp, and they wont kill the totem, becours of the threat that you build up by healing, while they come to you from both sides, is so high.
Make sure that you got all your totems down at all times, Fire Resistance totem aint needed, just do Mana Spring Totem.
Run with Water Shield, not Earth Shield, becours you will need the mana way more then the healing. riptide were enough to keep me up all the time.
Go with Flametongue Weapon insted of Earthliving Weapon, you need to burst up the dmg, and if your a resto shaman, you can keep your self up easely.
It wasnt hard at all, even I pulled a Onyxia Warder by my Earth Elemental Totem in the air phase (phase 2) by a mistake. Just killed it, and went on to Onyxia again.

I tried to solo as a 72 draenei death knight, i always get her down to around 60-65%. I was blood of course, and then i can stay alive with death strike, and to even make death strike heals, the target must be diseased. nd when i try disease an add, they die at one hit-.- so i cant use DS to stay alive, if i tried on onyxia, adds killed me, and the fireball since prestilience dont gets to adds, when i got onyxia as target...
I got help by a 59 druid healer. he died in middle of air phase, then i killed her, from middle of phase 2, thats ca 50%.
In 80 am sure i will manage this alone.

Soloed her today as an Unholy DK, in Frost Presence.
The first phase was easy, just made sure to keep myself topped off with Death Strike(I never used plague strike once until I got her down to 25k hp).
Second phase was the worst; the whelps lasted surprisingly long with just using UB, so I found myself using Pest. to spread the diseases I had on Ony. The worst part of this phase was making sure I was actually hitting her; several times I nearly died because I couldn't position myself right.
Once the second phase was over and I recovered my HP(which nearly hit 0 after a deep breath), the rest was just a matter of time(about 8 mins to be exact).
If I had one piece of advice to give to an Unholy DK, it would be to make sure your ghoul is up, so you can use him as a back-up heal if you get into trouble(and not to use Gargoyle in phase 2, so you're never too far away from a Death Pact).
Good luck.

Onyxia, The Dragons of Nightmare and Azuregos.
For a well put together or close group of friends/guildees these are a good source for Classic Epics, and some gold for your guild. It doesn't take much time, and with a good tank, a pair of healers, and a bunch of DPS (We usually groups of 10-15) you can drop these dragons (including a couple of wipes and flight times) in 45 minutes.
Every week or so, my guild and I get together, and usually after dropping
Onyxia
, we all go and search the spawn points for these boys (and girl) and also for
Azuregos
.
To make it easy for your reference, on each of these dragons, I have posted a link to the others in case you're wondering what the others can drop, or how to defeat them.

Anyway now at 80 I've been trying to get her down quicker and quicker.
without anything else then motw+thorns I got it down to 8min. This was with tankspec+dps gear (mostly t 7.5+10man epics)
The fears in p3 slows it down abit, will play around abit more with it maybe time berserk for the fears and buff up better, then 7min should be possible atleast.

Soloed as a Holy Pally with Full Naxx 10/25 epics.
Tips for soloing him:
1. The fight will last a VERY long time, you should keep a spare weapon with you incase your initial one breaks. (I had no problems with this.)
2. Bless yourself with wisdom (Incase you have mana issues), put up FR aura for a safer encounter, or ret aura for a quicker but less safe encounter, and Seal of Light (wisdom if you do not have much mana, and are unable to sustain maximum damage).
3. Keep sacred shield up at all times, as Onyxia sustains a very low damage output, sacred shield should be able to soak up 90% of most damage. Whenever you take a bit of damage, you should let Seal of Light or Judgement of Light Heal yourself back up, as you will not be taking much damage.
4. Onyxia will cast a fire breath, this will hit you for average ~ 1600 damage, although you may sometimes completely resist it (courtesy of FR aura).
5. You should fight against a wall to avoid the annoying knockback, and you should use all damage dealing attacks frequently whenever off cooldown.
6. When the adds come, simply walk to the center of the room, pop your ret aura, and consecrate. This is probably the hardest bit of the encounter as you will take a fair bit of damage, just spam flash of light on yourself and keep sacred shield up (Only needed for those around level 70, level 80 folk will find it a lot easier.)
7. Now just burn down the boss, and enjoy your 50g, bags, head of Onyxia, and other loot.

I solo'd her on my hunter as BM back in early Jan, it was pretty easy.
Since then, over the last few weeks I have been killing her over and over on my Death Knight. I am a frost tank and I used that same spec to kill her. Blood Presence for Phases 1 and 3. Frost Presence for Phase 2.
A trick I learned as Frost Spec, Hungering Cold does freeze her. She still casts and attacks, but she does stop moving allowing you to turn her and place her where you want during the three phases. Hungering Cold also helps with controlling the whelps when you need to catch up to her flying away.
I have spoken to other DKs who seem to just spam Death Strike on her, I tend to only need to use that on Phase 2.

Soloed last night (mage) using a frost/Arcane hybrid spec. I had read it was being done on live a couple of months ago & decided to give it a shot. It took me 6 attempts to get out of P1, but on attempt #7 I made it to P2 then it was fairly easy to make it to the end, 27 minute kill.
I used a the same strat & a slightly different talent spec & glyphs as the following guide:
http://forums.wow-europe.com/thread.html?topicId=7539774573&sid=1
It was a ton of fun & I recommend any (geared) mage try it. The key is to learn how to bandage yourself succesfully every available chance in P1. Good luck!

Solo'd as ret in all crafted/heroic epics (only raid epic is a ring) and a couple blues. was very easy, seal of light/judgement of light just for the health(again, this was only for the health. its a pre-bc boss, don't feel like youre going to get majorly gimped just because you aren't using martyr or command, using seal/judgement of light will save you a lot of healing, i only had to actually flash heal myself 3 or 4 times) and judgements kept my mana topped off pretty much the entire time. use free heals/mana at your own discretion, I would generally rotate Gift of the Naruu and Divine Plea every so often
All in all the fight took me about 15 minutes from start to finish. may even be more efficient as ret if you have good gear for it just because the damage boost would drop the time drastically.
EDIT: did it again this week and timed it from entering combat to death was 14 minutes 18 seconds

Soloed yesterday by my elemental shaman who dinged 80 the day before. All equipped in random 70+ blues and the 62 epic goggles. Only time things got a bit nasty was when I removed the interface to take alot of screenshots :P
Starting phase 2 i didnt take any chances with the first swarm of whelps so i popped my stone elemental totem, he was a bit stupid and ran all over the place and i was afraid he would run into the cave or possibly pull the warder near the entrance to the encounter area. I kept close to him and managed to get him central, tossed him a heal just to be safe and popped magma totem. 2 seconds later all whelps were down and i recalled all totems and placed wrath/stoneskin/fire res/haste.
I kept myself near the wall central at all times and only attacked her when she was within range and healed/killed whelps when she was out of range.
Phase 3 i replaced stoneskin with tremor totem and there was no problem at all. Didnt time it but ~40 minutes sounds reasonable.

Warriors who say they've solo'd her are lying. Bloodthirst is not enough to heal through overpowered phase 2, and since Bloodthirst is in a crappy talent tree, you can't just charge in combat to catch up to her. She flies faster than you run, so you can't chase after her spamming instants to heal up.
That and her fireballs are not reflectable. Heck, if they're going to make certain spells ignore Spell Reflection, they may as well just take the ability away.

Soloed on my 80 level hunter, Naxx gear + 2 pieces of tier5, turtle pet-tank. Was very simple except for air phase, since Onyxia was untankable and could land some damage on me with fireballs, and the only way for me to heal myself was bandaging. Disengage and FD helped to avoid some of those fireballs. The turtle was in agressive mode during this phase and tanked all of the whelps that came up, without any problems. The pet wasn't any close to dying at any point during the entire fight.

Soloed just now as a 79 Blood Deathknight... Wiped a few times in order to get phase 2 in place which is rather hard considering you actually need diseases up + Hitting with Death Strike in order to heal yourself.
A clever use of Cooldowns is the key to this fight while keeping yourself close to Onyxia for selfhealing.
The adds kinda has to die A.S.A.P as well, seeing as having them beating on you + Onyxia's fireballs aiming towards you as well you'll go odown very fast!
Phase 1 and 3 is cake though, only phase 2 which needs some practice.

Also tried this in Protection Gear, only 5man heroic stuff.
Solo'd her no problem, fight lasted a bit over 30mins (had to rebuff myself in fight).
Threw on Seal of Light and Judgement of Light, though I swapped to Judgement of Wisdom after a while cause she didn't do nearly any damage on me.
Fire Resistance Aura and keeping (skilled) Sacred Shield up most of the time I was almost always topped off, even in Flight Phase, where I had to LoH once though.
Only real problem I encountered (aside from trying not to fall asleep) was finding out where the '%!"§$! she flew off to all the time in Phase 2. (I'm a Dwarf...cut me some slack will ya? -.-')
Other than that....walk in the park...very long....tiring walk in the park, but easy nonetheless ^^
Almost forgot using the Blade for the Quel'Serrar quest though..remembered when she was at about 2% or so.
Gonny try again in Retribution Spec....but Free Kill for any decently Heroic Geared Prot Pally

Easily soloed as a druid in decent pvp gear: 28k health, 4k AP, 24k armor, 34% dodge. No fire resist aside from +75 from mark of the wild. Those stats are for bear form, which I stayed in all the time (aside from when healing).
She was only hitting for 400 in phase 3, so I didn't take as much damage as I expected to. I took a lot of damage in phase 2 because the fireballs constantly hit for ~1k. Since its fire damage, you can drop out of bear form to heal and not take any increased damage (provided there are no whelps out). I soaked a few deep breaths (some things never change) but they only ticked for 800.
It can be tricky following her moves in phase 2, so lacerate wore off a few times. I didn't time each phase, but the whole fight took 15 minutes. This might not be the best way to farm gold, but its certainly fun and a good way to get 18 slot bags.

Onyxia is returning in patch 3.2 as a 'memory' within the 5-man dungeon 'Trail of the Champion.' Argent Confessor Paletress will evidently take players on a wild ride against past bosses from raids, instances, and even elites outside of dungeons.
Her infamous Deep Breath is seeing a significant rework, and as such, will doubtless lead to vast amounts of theorywork concerning its mechanics. Not to worry, I have dataminehaxxed the information from the server, and have worked out precisely the way in which Deep Breath will work.
Onyxia's deep breaths are actually going to be Blizzard's first example of achievements having an effect on actual gameplay other than mounts.
First off, your 5-man group must have a cumulative total between 7000 and 15000 achievement points, which will assure that she does her deep breath no more than seven(!) times. Any less, and your intrepid group of would-be champions may face as many as nine breaths. If your cumulative total is above 20000, then she will deep breath no more than five. However, it doesn't stop there!
Special attention is paid to raid achievements. Those that have downed every boss in WotLK before 3.2 (on normal modes) will see a reduction of the number of deep breaths by two. Those that have downed all the hardmodes of bosses (not including Yogg+0 and Algalon) will see a reduction of 3. And if your group consists of players that have managed to do every single raid achievement (not including realm firsts, but including Algalon on both difficulties), you'll only be hit by one deep breath.
However, those that have at least one player with a realm first kill on Algalon will see 20 deep breaths. Those that consist of a group of all players with realm first achievements on Algalon.. she will ONLY use deep breath.
Have fun, and good luck! Also, when all players have both a

in their inventories (it is possible to bug this encounter and do this if only one person has the haunted memento by throwing it very quickly in the last 1% to the tank, but this means the tank cannot already have it), she has a 3% chance to drop
-This fantabulous head is an extremely fast flying mount. This mount can only be summoned in Outland and Northrend.
Good luck!

Easily soloed as a 80 mage with Ulduar-25 gear using the following spec:
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent#ofci00bIzshzGZZVffcofz0fzh:sjm
and no special buffs. I just used spellpower food, ice armor and arcane intellect.
Maintain ice barrier, fire ward as necessary. If ice barrier drops before cooldown is up use mana shield. Evocation every cooldown to regen mana and health.

A couple days ago I did my first Onyxia solo as Prot spec and it took me about an hour, today I figured I'd give it a shot as Ret (I'm primarily Ret and so my gear is a bit better there). Timed it and it took 13 min 50 seconds. I used AW and trinketed early, then did the same at 19% but forgot to do it in between, such as during phase 2.
I used Fire Resist Aura, Seal of Blood, Judgement of Light, and Blessing of Might. I did this almost the entire fight unless I got down to 50% life & mana, then I'd swap to Seal of Light for one rotation or 5-10 sec, then I was probably at full and went back to Seal of Blood. Only had to go to SoL maybe 3 times during the whole fight, and only had to use instant FoLs 10 or less times.

Raid just reset and I got her in 10 minutes 43 seconds! I want to see if someone can do this in under 10 minutes, it's gotta be possible. 3.2 made this a bit easier for Ret because where SoB used to damage us, now SoC does a better job without the self damage. Last time I had to stop SoB DPS a couple of times and mana up with SoW after using a few instant heals.
This time: Judgement of Light, Seal of Command, Blessing of Might, kept Sacred Shield up the whole time. Stayed pretty much topped off on health, and mana stayed near max until 20% and I burned her with constant Consecrations and Hammers of Wrath.

On thew new 3.2.2 Patch Onyxia will be a WOTLK raid she will be buffed and her loot table revisited.
This will be done to celebrate World of Warcraft 5 years Anniversary.
This permanent update to Onyxia will convert the dungeon into 10- and 25-player modes. We will be adding new items to Onyxia’s loot table that have the same model as some of the classic loot from this dungeon, like Tier 2 helms, with stats updated to match the current level of content. There will be a special new item too: a normal drake-sized 310% speed flying mount modeled after Onyxia herself called an Onyxia Broodling. We will also be updating the encounter mechanics to be more fitting for modern raiding, but we can guarantee players will get to experience the frightening horror of deep breaths once again.

Seems that the Orgrimmar-wide buff that used to be given for handing in her head to Overlord Runthak doesn't happen any more. I did the hand-in just now and he did a few emotes and waved his arms a bit, but there was no speech/yell and no buff. Guessing this is in preparation for the upcoming Onyxia revamp in patch 3.2.2.

Also easy soloable as a feral druid.
During fases 1 and 3 you can easy remain full life with just Improved Leader of the Pack.
During fase 2 you should need one, two, at least three barkskin-healing touch (only when she moves from a spot to another).
As the whelps spawns in fase 2 you have just to use a bit of Swipe during the Mangle (Bear) CoolDown.

Very simple solo as an 80 balance druid. My biggest problem was mana. I used innervate every cooldown and cast lifebloom on every clearcast proc to get free mana back. Used barkskin every cooldown until phase 3, when I saved it for fears. I kept faerie fire and insect swarm on her, and chain cast starfire otherwise, using treants every cooldown. I kept regrowth up on myself and alternated between rejuv and lifebloom depending on my clearcast procs. Phase 2 I found it better to tab insect swarm dot the whelps down instead of using hurricane, which puts a huge dent in your mana.

Pretty easy, but took forever as an enhance shaman in decent (Naxx 25) resto gear.
First attempt was in regular enhancement gear. Did fine until phase 2, when healing myself through fireballs, LBing Onyxia, and healing + AoEing down the whelps drained my mana to nothing. Sham Rage didn't help too much as the whelps die quickly fast for WF to proc. Died from the inability to heal.
Second attempt took about a half hour but went much smoother. Resto gear, enhance spec, dual wield caster MH with Windfury and a regular enhance OH with Earthliving. Fire resist totem = win. Use wolves to burn down first phase, Fire elemental to gather the whelps during second phase (don't let the elemental die), bloodlust + wrath of air + spam lightning bolt on Onyxia to take her into 3rd phase. Switch back to your regular enhancement MH, use wolves to burn. Keep tremor up.
Dropped 59g, 2 t2 pieces, epic ring, 2 BoE blues, and an 18 slot bag. Weapons were almost broken by the end from fighting so long, so keep an eye on them and switch weapons if you need to.

Just soloed this on both my L80's to get the achievement before the new raid goes live.
Feral druid in Ulduar gear - complete joke, never even had to shift out to heal.
Hunter at about the same gear level - as BM spec the only slightly hard part is avoiding deep breath and fireballs in part 2. My bear with 14.5k hp and 22k armor didn't even need healing, Spirit Bond and Silverback were enough. I FD'd through most of part 2 (the whelps don't aggro and eventually despawn if you FD and stay down as soon as she takes off, just do it somewhere safe at the side so you dont get hit by deep breaths).
Having never raided in vanilla WoW I'm looking forward to doing it for real in the new L80 raid :)

Just soloed her for the first time as an 80 DK w/ hybrid UD and blood build. Needed a bit of fire resist to get it done though, so popped to the AH and picked up some budget greens - went in with 130 fire resist and all blues (except for weapon which was a smithy epic). No instance/raid gear what so ever, so it's doable if you play exclusively solo (like I do).
Phase 1 and 3 were very easy. Just tank and spank keep your health up with rune tap/death strike and keep your ghoul alive.
Phase 2 was a bit of a pain in the ass. Helped to use Army of the Dead as soon as this phase started. Good thing about having the ghoul is that you can easily keep track of where Ony is in this phase, though he sometime aggros whelps (these can easily be taken care of with death and decay+blood boil). Use Anti-Magic Shell when she casts Deep Breath to minimise damage. The ghoul will probably die one or two times in this phase if you haven't been keeping it's health up with death coil, though if it's near death use Death Pact for extra healing.
Dropped 2 T2 helms (though none for me), 2 BoE blues, 2 Ony Bags, Ancient Cornerstone Grimoire, Sinew, a codex and 58G.
Really only wanted to get it done before the anniversary. :D

As of today (9/22/09) Onyxia will now be scaled to level 80 players, and drop level 80 items that are similar to her old drops. This was added in patch 3.2.2. Here is the official quote.
"The Brood Mother Returns
After years of lurking in her lair battling the many brave adventurers who travelled from afar to challenge her, Onyxia returns stronger than before to commemorate World of Warcraft’s five-year anniversary."
-Onyxia has been scaled to offer new challenges to level 80 players and is now available for testing in 10- and 25-player modes.
-Adjusted for modern raiding, but with the fundamental experience of fighting the Brood Mother still in effect, including the horrors of her Deep Breaths!
-Onyxia will now drop level 80 item versions of some classic loot items from the level 60 encounter.
-Brood of Onyxia, a very rare 310%-speed mount modeled after Onyxia herself will be available for the luckiest of challengers.

The 10man group I was in ran into a situation where two Onxyia Wardens would spawn nearly immediately after the start of the fight.
Is this normal? Since I have read nothing about it I am very confused. We assumed at first it was part of the encounter, but that seems impossible, our other guess was that they spawn if you get too close to the entrance ramp.
Any information is appreciated.

From the strategy intro:
"The occasional Fireballs that splash to nearby targets are not too bad, but the Deep Breath (preceded by raid warning) is enough to decimate a raid."
So, it kills 2.5 people in a 25-man raid, or a single person in 10-man?

Onyxia is a three phase fight:
Phase one (100%):
- Knockback to the front and back
- Fire breath to the front
- Standard melee attacks
Phase two (65%):
- Onyxia takes flight
- Complete aggro loss
- Fireball spits at random targets
- Whelp spawns 20 on each side, roughly every 90 seconds
- Elite Adds spawn, Must be picked up by off tank, easily killed. Cast Fire Nova, and Ignite weapon... Both of which melee dps should run away from.
- Deep breaths kill for roughly 20,000 Damage. Avoided by standing to the sides of her facing direction.
Phase three (40%):
- Onyxia lands
- Knockback to the front and back
- Fire breath to the front
- Standard melee attacks
- Lava spits. Stay off the cracks or they will burn you.
- Random fears. Frequently in conjunction with lava spits.
The biggest key to the fight is not taking aggro from the main tank AND avoiding the flame breath. Everything else is trivial in comparison. Strategies for this fight are fairly standardized.
Recommended Group Make Up for 10 Man
2 Tanks, 3 Healers, 2 Melee DPS, 3 Ranged DPS
2 Tanks Recommended for adds (one for aoe, one for elite, also makes the transition from phase 2 to 3 a bit easier)
3 Healers Recommended for the large damage taken in general by the tanks and the raid
2 Melee dps for killing adds in phase 2, and nothing else
3 Ranged dps for killing ony in phase 2 (ignoring the adds)
Recommended Group Make up for 25 Man
3 Tanks, 6 Healers, 6 - 8 Melee DPS, 8-10 Ranged DPS
Just apply the same above here, and you should be fine
Tips
Phase 1 and 3 are relatively easy, generally recommended to blow all cd's and heroism during the beginning of phase 2 to get her through this as quickly as possible
Shaman recommended for raid (atleast 1 for heroism and tremor totem)
*I Will add more tips as more are developed or i can think of more*
Edit 1: Sorry! Forgot to give credit to the poster above, I copied Mootwo's given strat, but just edited it to accomidate the new changes.
Edit 2: Added a Recommended group make up for 25 man.
Edit 3: Fixed Detail on Phase 2 (Thanks Firedwarf) (Sorry, was really tired when I first did this Lol)
Edit 4: Detached.
Edit 5: Added "Tips" Section.

Downed here in 10 man tonight. Bunch of wipes but we got it.
One of the key things here is to keep some ranged DPS on here in phase 2...and burn her down ASAP...the longer she's up in the air the more whelps...makes things very tough.
2 Locks in the group including me and she drops the mage helm..and no mage... Having bad nightmares of classic wow :)
All in all a fun fight...don't bring low dps'ers though....rough time.

Onyxia on 25 man is easy. Basically when you see the deep breath emote, run to a side.
When phase two starts, aka air phase, when she turns away and begins to walk across the room that is a good time to Bloodlust/Heroism and blow cooldowns.
The whelps should now come out, and have the melee stay on the whelps and the ranged on Onyxia. Phase two is a quick phase.
Phase three, it is ideal to tank her against the back of the room, and ranged standing to her side. This way when fear happens you don't hit the whelp rooms, and it is easier to see when the lair adds come out.
Wipes: One. Lag was the cause.
Loot:
Netherwind Crown
Rifled Blastershot Launcher
Helmet of Wrath
Ashen Sack of Gems
Enlarged Onyxia Hide Backpack
Head of Onyxia

As a Hunter, I found my wolf pet to not be very helpful during this fight. The AP buff was fine and all but my pet wasn't capable of reaching Ony during the flight phase (not shocking, I know).
I ended up swapping out for my old Windserpent and was delighted to see that the lightning breath was perfectly capable of shooting a flying Ony. We didn't have a whole lot of ranged DPS in our 10man so this was actually quite helpful.

On 10-man:
Onyxia has 4,880,000 Health
She only summons
one
Guard every ~30 seconds during second phase, not two like on 25-man.
Whelps have 63,000 Health and hit tanks for about 750-1100 melee damage after armor reduction.
While the first wave of whelps during the second phase did seem to be 40 whelps, subsequent waves later in the phase seemed to have fewer.
No enrage timer. First and Second phases can be slow and controlled. Third phase is the best one for rushing with Bloodlust/Heroism and big CDs.
Onyxia Lair Guard
189,000 Health
They hit tanks for about 5500 to 8000 melee damage after armor reduction.
They cast Ignite Weapon, dealing about 15,000 fire damage. Resistible via fire resistance.
They occassionally cast Blast Nova (5 sec cast), dealing ~22,000 fire damage, also resistible. Ideal to nuke the Guard quickly & avoid Blast Nova.
Blast Nova has a very short range, you can start running away after it's halfway through the cast and still avoid damage.
Our strategy was:
Phase 1
Just lazy DPS. No real reason to rush this phase.
Don't blow long-time CDs or anything.
Phase 2
At first, group up on the second tank until he has all of the Whelps, then AoE them fast once they're all hitting him.
By the time they die you should see the first Guard coming. Only nuke the Guard when the tank has grabbed him.
If there is a whelp wave coming then group up on the secnd tank and let him grab them all before doing anything to them.
If there is a Guard coming, it's going to run by the main tank so just let the Guard run to him.
Only when the second tank has all whelps does anyone change to AoE them, and only when the Guard is held in position does everyone nuke it. If neither of those conditions is met, everyone who can should be nuking Onyxia.
If Onyxia is out of range of the ranged DPS, just wait for her to come back. Again there is no enrage timer and you're in no hurry during this phase if you have the DPS to kill the Whelp waves and Guards quickly.
Phase 3
At the start, eliminate remaining adds from second phase.
After that just survive and nuke.
This is the most chaotic phase, so blow those big cooldowns to end it quickly.
It's really easy if you can get the second phase coordination down.
Second Phase positioning we used: Back Wall
/---------------\ X = Second Tank, healers and ranged be near him at all times.
/ X \ O = Main Tank, where he holds the Guards. Tank lets Guard run to him.
/ \ @ = Whelps come from here.
| O | Note: The distance between the two tanks shouldn't be more than maybe 15 in-game yards.
@ @As far as positioning, just have the second tank stand at the back of the room, with the healers and ranged all close around him in a circle. This is for three reasons: (1) The group is all near the back to quickly get to the walls for Deep Breaths, (2) when whelp waves come all the ranged can quickly group up on that tank so he can grab all of the whelps even if they go for healer aggro initially, and (3) the ranged and healers are all out of range of the Guard's Blast Nova if it casts one.
The bug detailed below has since been fixed by Blizzard in a patch. Bug information only struck-through and kept for sake of posterity.
Bug on the Helms
: It is true that as of 9/22/09 the helms are bugged (like all other BoP boss drops who's item trade timer hasn't run out) and cannot be gemmed
UNTIL
you put a helm enchant on them. If you enchant the helm, you can then gem it.

So, it kills 2.5 people in a 25-man raid, or a single person in 10-man?
Fireball = Fireball
Deep Breath is a totally different animal altogether.
The fireball is shot at anyone with aggro on Onyxia during phase 2. It is an AOE attack with about a 30 yard radius around the targeted individual and does about 3k damage to whoever it hits. During phase 2 she DOES have an aggro table and it is possible (and might I add very likely) to overtake the tank in threat. At that point she will focus on the person doing the most damage to her. Going into phase 3 however a tank just needs to taunt the boss to gain the threat he had prior to phase 2.
The Deep breath is also an AOE ability that causes massive amounts of damage to anyone in its path. The deep breath does about 5k damage to a 10m raid buffed individual each second it ticks.

Solution... : Shammy up and... ToTeM !
Tremor totems
only affect the party that the Shaman is in.
edit:Doom is right, but due to the harsh measure of unpopularity in Draenei Shamans (at least on my server), it may slow things down. Sure, on 10 man difficulty it wouldn't be a problem to get 2. Shamans aren't looked at as much needed classes in large numbers, and on alliance they're mainly only ever used as alts, it usually makes things harder, having two on 10 man is just a luxury. But if you're on 25 man difficulty, it would mean bringing in 5 Shamans. Which can unbalance things a bit considering they're not as agile as say Paladins or Druids. This info may dramatically vary between Horde and Alliance, and server to server.
edit again: I did state "At least on my server" in my first statement. Never did I indicate the info to be TOTALLY correct.
Stop trying to make enemies, not ever did I intend to throw out any controversial statements, I apologize if it seemed that way.

Downed today in 25 man guild run, 9/23/09.
I am a fury warrior, 2 pieces t9, rest t8.5.
Easy fight. First phase is a joke for any decently geared DPS.
Second phase is annoying, but I consider it a retard check. Stay out of deep breath. Even if you can't get behind her, run to the walls and let heals take care of it.
Third phase is same as first, with tons of fear flying around. Shammy totem is very useful because fear will put you either in range of the lava spurts around the room or her VERY hard hitting cleave. Overall, easy encounter. Did it in 3 tries.

Phase 1 is a simple dragon, tank her with your back against the wall to avoid her knockback
Phase 2 has two types of adds,
- Whelps have to be grouped up and AoEed down,
- Big adds spawn in pairs of 2 and hit hard, so they have to be picked up quickly
- When she uses deep breath, run behind her.
- DPS has to group up on the OT, so he can gather all the whelps
- Melee can still hit Onyxia, stand under her
Phase 3 is the same as phase 1, but she will use an AoE fear and fire will come out of the ground

I want to add this idea.
I did the raid last night and we did it different from "The Lair Guards spawn more frequently (a pair every ~30 seconds), but are significantly easier to kill, as long as you assign a few ranged DPS to them. They need to die quickly, as their abilities can be dangerous even for geared tanks."
We let the melee DPS and the tanks deal with those while the range take care of Onyxia. If you got a good healer, the tank would not have a problem if their health is in a good place.
If the Whelps and Lair Guards spawn at the same time, just put both group together and AOE them down, it is easier for the tanks.
Yes, the range should move toward the tanks when the Whelps come.

It is not a good idea to put melee dps on the Lair Guards. They will cast an AOE in a while which does about 20k fire damage, or all melee dps must immediately run away when the Lair Guard starts casting.

I did it (failed) in 25 and 10 lastnight.
If you have Good Mele DPS, Have them take the guards. Its a lot faster, and ranged can stay on Ony. We had tanks grab whelps, bring them to the middle, and then DPS(ranged) Nukes them down. Spotting Ony during DB can be tricky, so you Have to keep on your toes, or desiginate a "spotter" and understand your (spotters) Lingo.
When Mele is on the Guards, If they start a Nova (very slow casting) Just run out of range. you have to kill them before Flame Blade.
Additionally, We had a Very hard time hitting Ony from the ground with Mele. you have to be Right under her, and she is always moving. I (Ret Pally) targeted her and ran "under" her, and when I saw a White swing, I tossed a spell as well. I recomend Ranged burn her down on phase 2, unless All of your Mele can hit her.
Tip/Trick... When she Enters Phase 2, she turns away and walks to the entrance of the cave before Flying. Mele should chase her from behind and Hit her Hard while she walks. her Tail is InOpperable during that walk, and it will set you up to be right near the first wave of whelps. I got off 4 white swings and around 3 or 4 spells during that walk. If everyone does it, it can really help with Phase 2 gettign to 40%.
Also - During the Initial fight, I found that her Hit Box is So big that I stood under the Joint of her wing (mid body) and was able to hit with everything, but was not in the way of cleaves and wing buffets. It looks like you are too far away, but you are not.
Good Luck.

Incorrect. It's difficult for melee dps to stay on Onyxia the entire fight due to her constant movement and tiny hit box in phase 2. What you should do is have ranged stay on Onyxia the entirety of phase 2 (to speed up how fast the phase goes by) and have melee focus on all adds, including the guardians.
The guardians have Ignite Weapon (causes significant fire damage to tank every melee swing, and causes that damage to all targets within 5 yards of tank), Cleave, and Blast Wave, which is a fire aoe with a 5 second cast time. Just have the melee dps stand behind the adds at max range and they shouldn't be hit by Ignite Weapon or Cleave. Then if Blast Wave looks like it is going to go off, the melee dps should simply run from the guardian until the cast finishes, then run back in and finish the add.

There is a lot of speculation, encounter mechanic, and plain stupid guessing going on about this encounter. The three things that will enable you to beat Ony easymode (1 wipe in a pug and down).
1) Kill the elite right as it spawns in phase 2. It hurts.
2) Stay out of the deep breath. That means look where she is when you get the letters on your screen, and go where she isn't looking. That could be behind her or the sides of where she is looking.
3) Use two tanks in 10 man, and an extra in 25. Have one ready to pick Ony up when she lands and take her back to the North wall. It isn't a DPS race.
Follow these three tips, and you will not fail. What I mean by this, is don't bring people who hear "Deep Breath" and run into the middle like chickens with their heads cut off.

As soon as you see the raid warning, note where Onyxia is facing and run behind her as quickly as possible.
Note that this can be interpreted wrong. It is
not
recommend you try to get
behind and under
her. Doing so forces you to be very close to the point of origin of the deep breath and easily susceptible to being clipped by it.
Instead, imagine Sartharion but with only a single flame wave (instead of the 3-4 you usually have to dodge) which you need to step to the sides of, except that this one can come from different angles. You're perfectly safe, even if you're in front of her, as long as you're not in the path of the 'corridor of fire'. Of course ensure that you don't run into the whelp area while you are doing so.
In short : Sidestep out of the path of her deep breath, don't try to go under her.

Just ran this 10-man with 2 healers and 1 tank.
Key things we noticed right off the bat were that the bigger adds are actually kinda annoying. Their fire nova hit all of us for around 18-20k damage even with flame resist aura up. Additionally, all melee shouldn't move in on it til the Flame Weapon enchant fades.
Other than that, this is really a joke of a fight damage/heals wise.
Unfortunately, priest and mage gear dropped, and we didn't have either. -_-

Bug on the Helms: It is true that as of 9/22/09 the helms are bugged and cannot be gemmed UNTIL you put a helm enchant on them. If you enchant the helm, you can then gem it.
The bug is actually item-wide. All items are currently ungemmable if they have the 2 hour trade timer on them still. :( Got a pair of gloves in ToC that had this same problem. Also fixable by enchanting though.
Nice guide also!
Edit: OP added this info.

Phase 1: same o ' same o '
**Phase 1 is identical to the original fight. It lasts from 100% health to 65%, and Onyxia utilizing basic dragon abilities - Flame Breath (heavy hit in frontal cone), Cleave (hitting up to 10 targets), Tail Sweep (with a large knockback), and Wing Buffet (frontal cone knockback).
*Tank Onyxia with your back towards a wall, to avoid knockback from Wing Buffet.
*DPS and Healers should be position at Onyxia's sides to avoid both Tail Sweep and the frontal baddies. The tank might need some heavy heals, as the spells hit rather hard, and some cannot be resisted/mitigated. Other than that, you should be fine here.
**Phase 2: There is Something new here
This is probably the hardest and the most annoying part of the fight. There are two things to watch out for - adds and Onyxia's new spells. Note to melee DPS - you can still attack Onyxia even while she is in the air, as long as you stand underneath here and follow here when she moves, but remember also to avoid the Breeath if u are a bit outside.
*There are two kinds of adds spawning during this phase - Onyxian Whelps and Onyxian Lair Guards.
The whelps will spawn in packs of 40 (20 on each side ). The first pack will spawn seconds after Onyxia lifts off in the air, and a pack will hatch every ~90 seconds after that while in this phase. While it is good to have a tank on them, try to AoE them down as soon as possible, as you want to mitigate overall damage and keep your mobility - you'll need both.
*Make the offtank the one who Gather his own side of trash and try to move to the other side where the main tank gather his own , when all gathered, Start AOE. This will make it easier on the raid.
The Lair Guards are new NPCs added in the 3.2.2 version of Onyxia. The guards will spawn more frequently than the whelps (approximately every 30 seconds), and will spawn in pairs (possible a pair from each side). They don't have too much health, but have really high melee damage output through abilities like Cleave, Fire Nova, Flame Lash (which reduces fire resistance), and Ignite Weapon (17.5k/25k extra fire damage to targets in melee range).
*It is good to have a tank on them and 1 RANGE DPS to help take them down very fast, while other have their own duty of the fight, but it is better to kill them from afar. Keep your melee DPS away from them at all times.
*The other thing to watch out for are Onyxia's spells. Her Fireballs are something you should just heal through - although it is advised that you spread out, as the missiles do damage in a 10 yards wide area. /range on DBM is your friend again. And, of course, there is the Deep Breath...
Deep Breath is now on 100% random cast intervals - which means that DBM, or BigWigs, or whatever boss mods addon you use won't be able to warn you in advance. You will however see a raid warning/emote "Onyxia takes a deep breath". As soon as you see that, you need to forget about anything else you are doing, locate Onyxia, figure out which way she is facing, and get behind her quickly. Deep Breath is very unforgiving.
**REMEMBER DO not Tank the Whelps or the Warden in the middle, as she make her Deep Breath all straight. Everyone in the Raid, EVERYONE should have a look where she is aiming her head before she hit the Breath.
Phase 3: NUKE, Yes Nuke it.
**Phase 3 starts when Onyxia's health reaches 40%. At this point she will land permanently and cast a raid-wide fear, accompanied by lava eruptions. Raid wide damage, with extras for the tank - nothing you haven't seen before.
Unlike the original version of the fight, Onyxia will no longer wipe aggro between phases, which means that your tank from Phase 1 should be the first person she goes to in Phase 3. So as i said, NUKE IT..!
Throughout this phase Onyxia will continue to use all of her abilities from phase 1 (Flame Breath, Cleave, Tail Sweep, Wing Buffet), alongside with Bellowing Roar (3-second fear) and Eruption (AoE during the fear). Whelps will continue to spawn as well, but they won't be nearly as many as in Phase 2, so a few of your ranged DPS should be able to handle them quickly.
Note: If a player gets close to the eggs, at any point of the fight, the nearest whelps will hatch. This is why it's very important to move carefully and not get knocked back during any of the phases.

I attempted Onyxia 25-man last night and it was a little hectic since we didn't quite know what to expect and some people had never done Ony (not a PuG run, but an organized raid group consisting of different members of guilds that raid together a lot).
The Lair Guards do A LOT of melee damage whenever they get their Ignite Weapon buff and the Blast Nova hurts a lot, too, so melee has to be careful. HOWEVER, being a Marks specced Hunter I decided to try the good ol' Scorpid Sting + Chimera Shot combo and prayed for a disarm. IT WORKED!
I assume since it works on 25-man it will also work on 10-man, and since my disarm works, then any disarm should work. Needless to say it turned the Lair Guards into wimpy hitting mobs on our tanks (and melee) and made them a lot easier to handle, so definitely disarm them when they get their Ignite Weapon buff and save yourself some headache.

I wiped on new Onyxia 6 times on 23 of September (patch day) and 5 times on 24 before we killed it. with 11 wipes i feel quite experianced, so here are a few notes:
Phase 1
-Dont stand in front of her, because she can nearly 1shot you, and never stand on her tail, because she will tail sweep you into whelps lair (great chance of wiping the entire group)
-Easy phase, caster dps shouldnt spend too much mana, ne need to nuke her fast as there is no enrage timer
Phase 2
-Tanks should always warn others if they have problem with handling adds, as all adds are easily AoEable and with casters dpsing Onyxia they die in a few seconds
-One dps on Onyxia should have assist and on about 42% make /rw like 'Get ready for Phase 2!', cuz it starts quite fast after Onyxia reaches 40% and tanks may not be ready to pick her up while still trying to manage with adds
Phase 3
-Dont dps Onyxia first - clear trash, its very nasty if u have some whelps up when Onyxia uses her AoE fear
-Phase is easy, if ur not going for achievement dont nuke as hell, just do calm, as overaggro here isnt hard to do and may ruin the whle raid

Melee DPS can no longer use melee-ranged attacks on Onyxia during phase 2 when she's up in the air. As a retribution paladin, none of my swings were hitting her despite trying every single position beneath her and Crusader Strike was always out of range. All my other attacks (Divine Storm, Judgement, Consecration, Exorcism) did still work, however.

Is it still possible to stand on the edges of the walls to prevent damage from the lave bursts in phase 3 completely and also make the fear a lot less chaotic? The room to run around in fear on these edges is so small that it is pretty much impossible to loose track of your orginal position so.
If this still works, then phase 3 could perhaps be a lot easier for many people, or do people already know and use this?

Ran This for the first time , this is freaking amazing that blizzard did this! They announced this at blizzcon 2009, but originally stated that it wasn't gonna be until November! I was kind of upset because i wanted to get my 63 pally ( ATM) to 80 before this, so I could of tanked it or Off tanked it, but I ran it with my Rogue ( Massive DPS) 25 man, All of the 24 other people it was there first run also, and
we actually had her drop herself lol ( the 2% Mount) I Had rolled a 100 along with 2 other people and I actually WON it!
Anyone tell me why? When 3 people rolled a 100 and I Was the one to receive it? I'm more then flippin excited, I have actually ran it 2 other times since then on my rogue and have gotten nice epic upgrades! If you need upgrades, run the 25 man raid ( just make sure you have a fully epic'd out tank/OT and healers and atleast 10 to 15 other fully epic peeps and you can have the rest of the people in blues and some epics and you will get epic gear ( more then likely ) and have a great 5th anniversary!
Blizzard Did a great job this year
at making something fantastic to remember and kick off the 5th great year of World Of Warcraft! The past 5 year anniversaries, and the years have just been amazing, I know cause I have been around since Beta first day release! Me and 2 other great buddies heard of World of Warcraft while playing other games like runescape/gaiaonline and other games like that and got beta keys asap before release, we stayed up for 48 hours straight at my place playing the beta! Since then we have been playing for 5 years now and have not taken a break and have quite every other game we have EVER played before! World of warcraft has had a great 5 years and I hope you all have enjoyed it as much as myself and 11.5 million others!
Them to bring back Onyxia from the lvl 60 raid was freaking the best choice they could have made to make this 5th anniversary the most memorable! Everyone and I mean Everyone that was around for original WoW Remembers there Onyxia Raiding days and now nobody that is lvl 80 now will ever forget the 5th anniversary!
Especially if your one of the lucky People (LIKE ME!) To get the lvl 70 epic flying mount
(that resembles onyxia in every way) and/or lucky enough to get the pet (dragon) that looks like her also, IDK How/or if its a drop or if they are gonna give it to everyone, but i have the pic saved on my laptop of a screenshot of when they announced the mount/pet! I dont remeber exactly how they stated how it was gonna be released and I havn't been able to go completly threw all the drops from the 10/25 man which im gonna now! But I'm shooting at getting the dragon pet also that is identical to the mount and looks just like onyxia!
HAPPY 5 GREAT YEARS OF WORLD OF WARCRAFT! Heres to another 5 more great years! Hopefully WoW Will be around for a lot longer then that and will have some more great events for the anniversaries!
Hope some of you are as lucky as me to get the amazing mount to remember this great anniversary from/and or the pet! Happy Hunting/Looting, and don't ninja loot enless you wana be marked for like, cause this is something that will never be forgotten and trust me neither will your ninja mark!
Just have fun with this great event, and if you dont get the mount be happy anyways, this is a great occasion! :D
After some Searching and information from informants I have found out we will be receiving the pet in November During the actual date of the 5th anniversary! I also have heard rumors that onyxia will return to her original pre TBC State after the anniversary in november, But have also heard rumors of her actually staying this way forever, but it was stated at Blizzcon that it was only for the 5th anniversary, so my Beliefs are that she will return to her original state of Pre-TBC After the 5th anniversary. I Believe they just started the Lvl 80 Onyxia Event 60 days prior to give everyone a fair chance at getting her mount/gear/accessories that they are questing or the item of choice they desire! Please don't take any of this personal or into a fact because all this is a belief/theory and none of these theories are for sure correct even tho blizzard may have stated something at blizzcon doesnt mean it will or will not be true! Only time will tell if ony will stay in the status she is in forever or if like its been said its only for the 5th anniversary!

i dont mean to nitpick, troll, what have you, but i feel i must disagree here. I personally play a Draenai DK*, i know many people who play shamans (quite proudly) as their mains. Among other reasons, Heroism is almost assumed to be had in any PuG, 10 or 25, that i'm in, and my guild routinely keeps at least two shamans in the raid.
*spare me the spam. i'm as tired as everyone else of idiotic faceroller DK's.

Strategy guide for Onyxia 10 man encounter :
Group:
2 tanks 5 dps ( 3 ranged pref ) 3 healers
Phase 1 : Tank and spank untill 65% . Never stay behind her because u will get knocked into the whelps and u will get -50 dkp .
Phase 2 : Onyxia will fly into the air . Lots of little drakes will spawn . Aoe them down .
Bigger drakes named Onyxian Guards will spawn also . They will spawn every ~30 seconds while Onyxia is in the air . Meele dps must stand behind them and kill them fast .
She will also Deep Breath . All dps / healers / tanks must stay on the sides of the room when this happens so you wont die .
Phase 3 : at 40% she will come back down .
She gets an Aoe fear and keeps all the abilities from P1.
If you survived phase 2 it is almoust a guaranteed kill as long as ppl dont go into whelp eggs resulting in another -50 dkp .
Also remember to keep a lot of dots on her . MORE DOTS .
There is not aggro reset between p1 and p3 so she will always attack the maintank when she lands.
Goodluck and gz for your easy epics .

So I had a hard time with the new Onyxia this week. The first few days of PuGs were all learning days, I know there are lots of players who came into WoW after TBC etc... so After 2 days of wipes/training I was a bit disappointed when even a guild 10 man, with vent and a plan still couldn't do it.
The biggest problem I saw was melee class saying, "I have to dps whelps?" "The Lair guards hit to hard, range should kill them"
Phase two is all about ranged DPS, if you only have 2-3 in your ten man that can take her life from 65% to 40% then that's what they have to do. Learn how to avoid the worst of the Lair Guard attacks ( by say disarming them ) and how to live through what you can't avoid. As for whelps, well you could get your mage/warlock on it, but again their dps might be better of focused on Onyixa when she is in range ( if your casters are stacked on say the whelp tank and she is out of range then sure they should AoE, but again what are your melee doing?, they can't even hit her right?)
Raid leaders might want to think about the two types of DPS a bit more. I was called in a few times this week to find out I was the only Ranged. Oddly enough the PuG I first got credit for her was 2 Warriors, 2 Paladins, 3 Death Knights, 1 Druid, 1 Hunter and me ( Ele-Shaman).
Only the Druid and a Paladin healing.
DK AoE was as good as anything you could hope for on Whelps.
The Paladin Tank was good enough to move the stack closer to Onyixa, so the Hunter and I could hit her.
Key Factor: No deaths to deep breaths.
And a note to my fellow Shamans, Enhancement is a great spec, but Elemental pulls a little more weight in this encounter. I just give 'em Windfury totem in Phase 3 to keep 'em happy.

On a serious note, I love that Blizzard brought back my 2nd favorite instance of all time (first being 40 man Naxx of course; u had to have been there. Really if you were never there for a 40 man raid I'm sorry for you; you really missed out on one of the most epic part of the games.) I just can't wait to frolic through the whelp caves and relive old times. :) Long Live Vanilla WoW!
p.s. for all the people complaining that they brought back part of Vanilla..... it's a joke and just for fun that blizz is doing this; they aren't making this lore-founded or a progression raid

We downed her 2nd try last night i was ot on my druid was simply enough on 10man pug
Raid constisted of:
Paladin MT
Druid Ot
1 melle dps a rouge
a mage, shammy, lock and an owl druid ranged dps
Healers:
A druid
A paladin
A priest
How we downed her
Phase 1:
Tank and spanked her at the back corner with me pulling random adds to build my rage up..
Phase 2:
Range Dps was nuking her hard with me picking up the " Onyxia Whelp "and the Mt and rouge taking the " Onyxian Lair Guards " with the paladin on me and the other 2 healers on the mt and raid.
Phase 3:
I picked up the " Onyxian Lair Guards " from mt allowing him to pick onyxia back up then every one nuked here while i took out the "Oyxian Lair Guards"
We only wiped the first time as Mt was killed in phase 2 due to lag issue leaving me to tank everything we cleared Phased 2 but as onyxia landed for phase 3: i was feared before we could get in possition leaving onyxia to wipe the riad at her will by the tiem i picked her up the healers where dead.
Drop where 2x
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=49315
1x
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=49309
and the usuall bag and gems.
i did win the tanking ring although some dps in the raid where complaining that the ring should of gone to the paladin, but paladin was happy for me to have it as the defense and armour are benificial to a druid tank.
She is still as fun as she was at level 60 :)
Edited for spelling errors.

Following two nights of wiping to the winged cave bi tch they call Onyxia, the guild I run with - Midnight Raiders on Skullcrusher EU - finally downed her. Just!
Our setup was a Protection Paladin (MT), Protection Warrior (OT) (me), two Resto Druids, Resto Shaman, Enhancement (or Elemental) Shaman, Mage, Hunter, Retribution Paladin and a Warlock.
We all loosely knew what needed to be done during the three phase fight...
Phase 1: DPS Onyxia, staying away from her head and tail;
Phase 2: Stack on the MT then AOE Whelp spawns, nuke the Lair Guards, avoid Deep Breath, and channel intermittent ranged DPS at Onyxia;
Phase 3: Repeat Phase 1 with the extra fun of Onyxia’s Bellowing Roar (fear) and fire Eruptions from the floor.
The first two phases went smoothly, with only the Retribution Paladin eating dirt mid-way through Phase 2 while fondling too many Whelps in a quiet corner of the cave. However, events took a turn for the worse at the beginning of Phase 3, with the introduction of an immediate fear from Onyxia. As a result, I went out of range of our healers and was floored by a Lair Guard while trying to limp back with my Shield Wall on its last few ticks.
With the Lair Guard running riot, four more of the group dropped – Hunter, Warlock, Enhancement Shaman and one of the Resto Druids. At this point, the MT thankfully managed to control the Lair Guard, and tanked it along with Onyxia at the back of the room. The Mage sucked the remaining life from the Lair Guard then set to work on Onyxia.
Unfortunately, another fear caused the Resto Druid to be tail-swiped into some eggs, and she spent the remainder of Phase 3 with a pack of Whelps roosting in her battered branches. Onyxia’s health slowly began to dip towards empty and following five minutes of frantic DPS, healing and a great deal of squealing (from the Druid), she was at 1%. At this point both the Resto Shaman and Druid alarmingly took a shot up the jacksee, leaving the MT and Mage to finally bring Onyxia to her scaly knees. Go Midnight!
As you can see, our Achilles heel was the transition from phase 2 to 3. The immediate fear caught us (well me) off-guard and ultimately cost us a fast and smooth final phase. Next time I’ll remember to cosy-up to a healer as Onyxia approaches 40% HP and hit Berserker Rage so I don’t get feared out of range! Hey, I’m a warrior, aren’t we supposed to be dumb?

As a fire mage, the best part of the fight is when the non-elite adds come. If a tank keeps them colse to eachother, the talent Living Bomb can do wonders. Keep applying it to the dragons and you wont be done with all of them when the first one explodes. If some of them crit, it's even better. Just watch as your dps skyrockets :)

Just wanted to let people know how to defeat the new Onyxia 10 man raids. The best setup I've found for fighting Ony is as follows. I'll cover the group setup for the 10 man raid then go in to more details of the fight.
10 man raid
:
For this fight you are going to need 2 tanks (Preferably a Paladin or Warrior), 2 healers (Best if both Priests) 2 ranged DPS (warlocks, hunters, mages etc. etc.....) and 4 melee DPS (warriors, paladins, rogues and so on).
Phase 1
Your basic tank and spank. Let the main tank get good aggro before any DPS attack. The tank will then pull Ony straight back to the back wall until their back is against it. All DPS should be attacking by this point, careful not to use any threat generating actions. ALL CLOSE RANGE DPS STAY TO THE SIDES OF ONYXIA! This will help avoid the "
Tail Sweep
" attack from Ony and allow for more DPS. One healer should be able to easily heal the tank during this Phase while the other healer keeps up anyone who may fall victim to
Flame Breath
,
Cleave
or
Wing Buffet
.

The hard part is over. Only thing left now is to get the party's health back up to par and basically beat her down. What you are going to do during this phase is almost exactly the same thing as Phase 1. Onyxia gains a couple new attacks that are a bit stronger during this phase but the rearrange in healing will compensate for this....... Main Tank will pull Onyxia back to the wall once more. All DPS stay to the sides of Ony. Slight change in the healing at this point though. Depending on how well your Healers managed their Mana by this point best is going to be having both healers paying attention to the main tank. To make sure he/ she does not die so close to the end. The tank is going to be taking the brute force of Ony. One of the healers should alternate to doing raids heals for anyone who gets hit by any of the random attacks Ony is doing. BUt once those people are healed immediately switch back to healing the tank to keep their life up. Repeat this until Onyxia dies.
Note: For the DPS attacking Ony...If you notice your life being drastically reduced, most likely you are too close to Ony's face and getting the frontal cone blasts of her attacks on the tank. Back up a little away from her face while also staying away from her tail the best you can.
Note: If a player is hit by the tail sweep and knocked into the whelp eggs the OFF TANK should pull back and grab the whelp and 2 DPS should help bring those whelps down with AoE and melee. Once they are down go back to attacking Ony. If Ony is under 100k health don't worry about the welps everyone can jump on them after shes dead.
Note: If by chance you died during the Onyxia fight, DO NOT RELEASE. If you have someone in your group that can battle rez have them do so periodically throughout the battle to keep people in the battle because once they are alive the healers can pick up on them again and get them back up to speed. But, if Onyxia is close to death do not release until after her death or you will not have a chance at the loot.
Well I hope this helps out with the new raid. Good luck and feel free to add to this or offer any changes that you may want to see. I'll be covering the 25 man raid as soon as I run it a few more times.

Just thought I'd throw in my two cents.
In my opinion, a Shaman is positively essential for this fight, especially on the new 10-man version, where your already-small party will be stretched thin. Bloodlust helps you burn thru Phase 2 fast, and a Tremor Totem makes the healers and tanks jobs a LOT easier in Phase 3.
I'm certain that more talented people have downed her without a Shaman, but every group we've attempted without one had a much more difficult time downing Onyxia.

At Phase 1: is a simple dps fight, you must dps her only at the side, you will get knockback from her
tail if you will try to dps her from behind.Till she reaches 65% health she will fly on the air
At Phase 2:Whelps will be spammed,I would suggest to fully AoE the whelps, the whelps have 189k health in heroic mode, she will also spawn a new mob called
Onyxia Lair Guard
,he has an AoE spell wich deals alot of damage, keep in mind that the the Guard deals a huge ammount of damage with melee so the healers must overheal the tank.Only on Lair Guard spawn each time, it spawns ~every 45 seconds.Onyxia will often cast fire breath. So it will be more easy if you have DBM because you get a warning when she casts it.When you will get the warning check the position of her head and go behind her or at the sides.
At Phase 3:At 40% she will land again on the ground, she will use fear (lasts 3 seconds) and the lava will be erupt and and it will deal damage to the players, she no longer drops aggro during phases,so your tank from phase 3 should still have her.

Perhaps an obvious point, but it's worth mentioning: melee DPS should stand at maximum melee range during phase three. Her hitbox is massive, far bigger than you would assume, and in this way it is almost impossible for you to be feared into Cleave/Tail Sweep locations. She's a pretty easy boss, but certainly fun and a welcome change from running ToC until your eyes bleed.

http://www.wowwiki.com/Onyxia
For a time, Onyxia masqueraded as one of the highest officials in Stormwind, preventing the people there from sending much-needed aid to the areas near the Burning Steppes (where her brother has great power and influence). Her own lair lay in Dustwallow Marsh on Kalimdor, and she considered it a safe haven were her true identity to be discovered in Stormwind.
Ultimately, she was unmasked by Marshal Windsor with the help of Varian Wrynn, Broll Bearmantle, Valeera Sanguinar, and Thargas Anvilmar. Taking Anduin Wrynn captive, she fled back to the safety of her lair with Varian and his entourage in pursuit. Varian, Broll, Valeera, Thargas, and Jaina Proudmoore descended into the depths of her lair to rescue Anduin and bring her to justice. In the end she was slain by Varian, and her head taken back to Stormwind to be hung from the gates.

This was a fun and somewhat lengthy fight for my DK, who solo'd her on 1/10/09. She only dropped 56g, an epic helm (Judgment) and Ring of Binding, a blue boe, some green boes and a book. SS or it didn't happen?
Other char was just to hold the raid open
She gave a feat of strength achievement, that was cool. She isn't any different now, though I don't remember getting adds. Now if only there'd be a level 80 MC/BWL. :)

Tip for dps with all around attacks... should apply for most mobs also. DON'T use an all around attack b4 tank can grab any aggro. Watched someone make this mistake and those little whelps do a good amount of damage to a clothie... ur dead b4 tank even knows what happened. All around attacks are a bad idea on incoming mobs of whelps lol

Fairly straightforward fight. There's a few things you need to worry about. Definitely one-tankable if you have good heals.
Heals
- Do whatever you can do make sure the tank, at the very least, doesn't stay feared when she roars. Not only does damage not break the fear, but it also forces the tank to leave the wall which can set her up for some nasty damage on the dpsers.
- Be ready to pop an instant cooldown or AoE heals when the hatchlings come out. As a tank, I have noticed that grabbing the whelps usually takes too long to ensure that absolutely nobody takes damage.
Tank(s)
- Tank her against the back wall. The fight is fairly straightforward for tanks in phases 1 and 3.
- In Phase 2, get in the middle as soon as she goes immune so you can quickly AoE threat-enize all of the whelps. The strategy I found best was to swipe (bear druid) both sides a good amount and then do a Challenging Roar to force them all on me for a few seconds. This gave me enough time to swipe my threat up to the level I needed. A stray whelp or two won't kill your raid. But any more than that, especially on healers, could cause a good run to go to a wipe in a short amount of time.
- Be on the lookout for the elite adds. With a decent group, the first elite add won't spawn until the first group of whelps are down. The second one should spawn shortly after the first dies, and it's not uncommon for the add to be alive when Phase 3 begins.
DPS
- Dragons, by nature, tend to have large, heavy tails. But they also are usually able to breath fire. Stand beside her.
- Busting out in AoE as soon as the whelps spawn is never a good idea.
- If there's an add alive in Phase 3, obviously, kill it.
-
Ranged
Onyxia lands at 40% health, whether the ground is clear or there just happens to be a ton of whelps sitting around. So, if there is a whelp wave incoming and she's around 45%, lay off dps completely on the boss and kill adds. Unless you have two tanks, there is little chance that you will survive whelps and Onyxia at the same time.
Etc.
- There are fires. You need to not be in them.
- When she emotes deep breath, look at her flight path and get beside her. If you are in front of her, bad things happen.
- If you have a shaman in your group, a tremor totem helps immensely in phases 1 and 3, due to the fear. Put it near the boss so the tank gets the effect from it.
- Fire resistance is not terribly important to this fight. I managed to easily tank it with good heals and about 45k buffed hp with 75 resistance, so the only reason you would really need extra fire resistance on your gear is if you as a tank are undergeared. I would say with decent heals, any tank with around 37k buffed hp could take this boss.
- Unlike some bosses' abilities, her fear can be cancelled by normal fear-cancelling abilities (such as Berserk). Use them when you can.
Overall, an easy fight. The only worry is Phase 2.

So we were going to raid here. Right before phase 3 the other tank DC's (which doesn't show till AFTER we're all dead), so we get stray big add and Onyxia all over the place.
After some attempts to rearrange our comp we decide to go crazy: I'll solotank here.
~6 minutes later or something we have a dead Onyxia.
If you wish to try that then I would recommend you have an overly massive healthpool like mine (46k before buffs) or a very keen group watching and properly nuking down everything before proceeding into phase 3. That's when the mobs start to stack up for real and things are getting crazy.

Me and my roommate (who shall be called Rusty) recently were in a 25 man for Onyxia here. We knew we were in trouble when, while healing up after our first wipe (lovely sign of trouble right there), we suddenly noticed her standing up and aggro text on the screen. Turns out, someone spawned a ghoul which ran straight for her. So we promptly wiped. We tried a third time and one of the hunters "fell" into the whelp cage. That's right, fell into an area you have to jump into.
I looked at Rusty and said, "I don't think this raid is gonna work out." Rusty, not noticing what happened to the hunter, said, "Why do you say that?" As the Hunter's wolf pulled Ony while running to it's master, I simply responded, "Just a hunch."

For those wondering, Onyxia is likely not soloable at 85 pre-raid gear. However, Onyxia10 was successfully 2-manned by Zelpher (resto druid) and Loksi (blood tank dk) in heroic gear on 1/20/11. The fight took 43 minutes and 43 seconds, at least half of that was the air/adds phase.
For those attempting something similar, a few tips:
- Onyxia apparently cannot be hit by melee during flying/add phase. We managed to bring her down eventually with Outbreak and Moonfire spam while fighting off endless waves of whelps & warders.
- Keep your healer off to the side, near the back wall during phase 3 to avoid a fear-tailwhip combo.
- Warders' Blast Wave is not a huge threat, but best mitigated by Anti Magic Shell or running out to conserve mana. Same goes for Deep Breath.
- A decently geared DK tank can heal/shield through most of the adds damage with proper cooldown usage, in order to allow healer to dps Onyxia in the air.
And finally, prepare for a LONG fight unless you have better ranged dps. But most importantly, it IS possible if you're crazy mount hunters like us :)

Just got done two manning her on 10 man with holy pally/prot pally combo, we are both heroic and rep geared at 85 but nothing more. Downed her in 19.5min. The fight was extremely easy and is just a matter of watching those deep breaths and there was no problems keeping the tank at full health. As holy I was specced into Denounce and Blazing light and simply dps'ed her during the air phase. When mana got under half, simply melee whelps with insight up.

Tried to solo Ony10 last night, tried being the key word. Onyxia will be very difficult to solo at this tier in my opinion, simply down to the whelps
Hunter with full pre raid gear, even swapped some pieces out for equivalent gear (ilvl 346/359) with stamina boosts to give my turtle a little extra hp. Tried both my solo spec of choice, MM with the lower BM tree pet healing talents and my SV raid spec.
Each time I easily got through the first phase, as such I dont think the third phase will be too much of an issue. Very simple to heal a pet through Ony's attacks. Took approximately 4.5 minutes to push her to phase 2.
The number of whelps is just overpowering at the beginning of phase 2, even with shell shield the turtle goes down fast. I tried my SV spec out too for the increased AoE but I couldn't get them down fast enough.
It may be possible for a hunter, if kitted out with 2 pieces of T5. The huge AoE in SV (30k ish dps during whelps, not sure if this is accurate was concentrating on my pets health flowing like water) could provide enough healing to pull the pet through.
Be warned, this is not a solo to take lightly. Although soloing Ony does feel epic enough to warrant at least one more attempt.

I was able to solo her last night on my surv Hunter. It took quite a few attempts to get the fight down. It's all about controlling adds and doing enough dps to her during phase 2. If you make it to phase 3 you're golden. Going to try as MM next week.
My ilvl is 358, and using a turtle tank of course. No T5. It's a very challenging fight, but doable for hunters with the right strat. Fight took about 10 minutes or so.

(Obviously) soloable by a blood DK, just takes forever. You have to spec crimson scourge, epidemic, virulence and morbidity. You must use tank gear (mastery stacked) as you will die to the initial wave of whelps at the start of phase 2 otherwise.
Phase 1: Tank and spank. Tank with your back to a wall.
Phase 2: Start running with Ony at around 66% so you can get as much damage into her before she flies up as possible. You might shave 5-6% off her during this time. A ton of whelps spawn. Burn them all down immediately, you may need to use cooldowns here as while they don't hit terribly hard, 25 of them beating on you will be unhealable in lower levels of gear. Once they're dead, focus target Ony and use
/cast Death Coil
to speed the encounter up somewhat as the phase will take forever. Outbreak Ony on cooldown, focus death coils into her whenever possible, tank the whelps / guardians underneath her so blood boil/DnD will hit her. Risen ghoul will just run around aimlessly under her so use it for a heal and nothing else. The lair guards only threatening attack is Ignite Weapon, AMS when it's up if your HP is dipping. Blast Nova misses half the time due to the add being 80 but Ignite Weapon always hits. Once the initial wave of whelps is dead it's unlikely anything during the phase will kill you as long as you don't let adds pile up too much. Most of this phase will be spent killing whelps/guardians and AOEing off them to whittle Ony down.
Phase 3: Tank and spank. It's a good idea for most if not all adds to be dead before pushing her, but a few whelps aren't going to kill you. You get feared occasionally. You won't die unless you let yourself go into a fear at 20% HP.
I've gotten a solo kill down to 21 minutes at this point.

Been soloing her in 10 man on my hunter now since the start of Cata for the mount, and thought I could share my tactics here. Obviously the fight has gotten a lot easier for me by now, well by easier I would mean faster, as I've done this so many times by now and gear has been greatly upgraded.
I run with my standard 7/31/3 raid spec, as surviveability is not an issue for either me or my pet, and an average gear level at currently 381.
I buff up with King's Drums and 40 agi food, in lesser gear you could probably use a flask as well until you get comfortable with the fight. Glyph of Misdirection is offcourse mandatory.
Using a turtle-pet, altho I don't think specifically a turtle is needed anymore, as the last ~10 kills neither shell shield or cower has been cast. Tanking pet is mostly for the increased growl threat and thunderstomp. Fight takes somewhere inbetween 6-8 minutes for me, depending a bit on RNG with whelp spawns and multishot crits. I'm sure with some gear upgrades, I should be able to make the 5 minute achievement (More Dots!).
Trash
:
Simple enough, but do not pull more than one at the time, your pet probably wont be able to handle it, even with cooldowns. They have about 900k hp and leaves a 75% reduced armor and increased fire damage taken debuff on your pet.
Phase 1
:
Misdirect Onyxia to your pet, and place the pet with the new 'Move to command' at the wall on the opposite side of the entrace, where she always use to be tanked. Keep Mend Pet up and dps her down. This phase is extremely easy.
Phase 2
:
At 65% she flies up in the air, and your pet will be unable to attack most of the time, so don't bother with sticking pet on her. Go to the middle of the room and drop a slowing + explosive trap. 2 packs of whelps (approx 10 from each side) will spawn and come directly at you. When they are starting to get inside the trap, pop deterrance and wait for them to be gathered up. Disengage out and spam multishot while running in circles around the trap. (Do not MD this pack to your pet, as it will most likely not survive all those whelps whacking it). I pop rapid fire here, for the extra focus regen. The whelps will never touch you and should die pretty easily if you kite them right. Unfortunately these do not proc Rapid Killing when killed.
(
It is also possible to completely avoid this add wave by simply placing your pet on stay where you tanked Onyxia in Phase 1, and just feign death as soon as the whelps are close to you, but I don't like cheesing encounters like that, so I will rather kill them.
)
When the whelps are down DPS Onyxia as much as you can, until the big add spawn. These can also be reset with feigning death soon as they enter the room, but they only have about ~250k hp and do next to no dmg to your pet, so just MD and kill them as soon as they come. (Do not worry about the Ignite Weapon attack, like we did on lvl 80, it barely tickles your pet.)
New whelps will come every now and then (they might be on a timer, I am really not sure, but from all the kills I've done both the timer and the amount of spawns seems random), just MD them to your pet and leave them there, while you dps down Onyxia. You don't want a lot of small ones hitting you, as they hit for 1500-2000 a pop. Kill any new big adds that spawns. With my current gear I get 2 of those big adds before entering Phase 3, in lesser gear I remember getting 3 of them.
Onyxia will throw out random fireballs on both you and your pet during this phase, but do not worry, the damage is low and is easily healed up with Chimera shot alone. You can also feign or deterrance these fireballs, but it should not be needed.
Phase 3:
At 40%, or 39% actually. Onyxia will land again and start the last phase. As soon as she is on ground, feign death and send your pet to attack her. Finish off the remaining whelps from Phase 2 by multishot/MD spamming, and then just go all out on Onyxia to finish her off.
Doesn't matter where you tank her, pet beeing feared into whelp caves will not trigger them, just make sure you stand in a safe spot yourself. You can deterrance the fear (Bellowing Roar) when you see it cast, for a few extra seconds of dps.
That's pretty much it. Phase 1 and 3 should not be a problem for anyone to get trough, it's all about managing those whelps spawns in Phase 2, while at the same time beeing able to put out some damage on the boss itself. It might take a few tries, but once you get it right, you will have another boss to farm weekly for a sweet looking mount. Best of luck!

Back in the day, there was a patch where Onxyia really was Deep Breathing more. Like, every time she moved. It was hilarious, especially since 'Onyxia Deep Breaths more' was already a meme. And it wasn't subtle, it was blatantly obvious that it was broken.

It's possible for a feral druid to solo her, but it takes a while (
an average of 24 minutes for me at the moment
about 15 minutes now that I have become more confident with the encounter).
I've always used my standard raid spec, without feeling the need for particular talents or glyphs.
Consumables, though, are very important.
Since I play the role of the hybrid/aggressive tank in our guild raids, my tank gear is fully oriented on agility. As a result, I've never been overwhelmed by adds throughout the fight. They die quite quickly.
Phase 1 is very straightforward. I just tank her at the back of the cave to avoid long knockbacks, and to make her walk the longest path possible when she's going to lift off.
As soon as Onyxia turns to head to the point of the cave where she starts to fly, I hit dash, tiger's fury and berserk to nibble as many hit points as possible while she's still grounded.
By the time she's completely lifted off and is out of reach I also want to make sure she has a fresh rake and rip ticking on her.
Immediately after that, it's time to hit thorns and welcome the huge wave of whelps in bear form. If I still have 10 or more seconds left on berserk I might decide to pop a damage reduction cooldown, shift to cat form and swipe at them for the duration before I finally go bear.
The whole phase 2 sees me keeping whelps under control, dispatching the draconids coming from the tunnel asap, and damaging Onyxia.
Direct attacks cannot hit her, but AoE attacks can. To bring her hit points to 40% I arm myself with patience and just hit her with swipe (bear), thrash and faerie fire feral (bear). Since swipe (cat) is demanding in terms of energy, and the afore mentioned bear abilities are boosted my my vengeance, I find it's more efficient to just stick to bear form. The only exception is when the cooldown on berserk is refreshed. When this happens, I shift to cat, pop it along with tiger's fury and swipe for the duration.
Phase 3 is just like phase 1. The bellowing roar is not a big deal, and from then on is just a matter of being patient for the last part. :)
Have fun ferals out there. :)

I've recently started 2-manning Onyxia with a friend. He's a Hunter, I'm a Paladin. Protection is my off-spec, but I use it in this case. We both are level 85.
At the pull I turn her around and slowly take her back to the wall where she usually gets tanked. For me it's tank and spank, Hunter just nukes. Come air phase (65%), I focus solely on the Whelps and Lair Guards. Having
Glyph of Holy Wrath
is extremely convenient here and with that, I use
Holy Wrath
every cooldown I got, to stun the whelps as I AoE them down.
My Hunter friend focuses on Onyxia mainly and only switches to the Lair Guard when he is up. Onyxia doesn't deal a lot of damage, nor do the Whelps, but the Guard can hurt. So we take him down fast.
When phase 3 comes (40%), I take her back to the wall again. Besides the occasional short fear, this phase is once again tank and spank. Maybe /tickle her a bit if you're in a funny mood.
So that's our strategy, hopefully somebody can make use of it.
We've only done this twice now, no mount yet. Finger's crossed! xD

Soloed this today as a Warlock. Seems easy, but is not. Took me good 8 hours.
What I did was I went demonology, used the Voidwalker to tank and health funneled it.
The hardest part is phase 2, here's how I did it: I was still using the Voidwalker and I used Demon Soul to redirect the whelps to him (to anyone who does not know all threat you generate is sent to your Voidwalker while Demon Soul is up, lasts for 15 seconds).
Phase 1 lasts until 65% (sometimes it's like 65.5%, it seemed kind of random), phase 2 lasts until 40% (sometimes until 39%, again kind of random), phase 3 is the final phase.
Phase 1 is very easy, in fact I got through it on my first try. Basically phase 1 is a tank and spank. As I said, Phase 2 is the hardest phase, what happens is 40 whelps come out and you have to kill them quick, very quick as I understand if you just use Hellfire there will be some sort of dps cap, so you will want to use Shadowflame every time it's off cool down. I found huge help in this item, in phase 2:
月亮井圣杯
. You will want to pop metamorphosis as soon as you have any whelps on you, use the Immolation Aura, use the Moonwell Chalice, then use the Doomguard (the moonwell chalice will increase its dps), as soon as all of the whelps are on you will want to use Demon Soul and start using Hellfire, again use Shadowflame every time it's off cool down. After the whelps die you will have to dps Onyxia down to 40% as quick as possible (it should already be at about 50-55% from your Doomguard). Do not stop dpsing until DBM tells you phase 3 started, do not stop to bandage, do not stop to heal your minion, do not stop at all! Also, in phase 2 another add will come out, have your Voidwalker pick it up, don't dps it until phase 3! The second wave of whelps absolutely cannot come out, or it is going to be a wipe, also I didn't let the second add come out (the big one), every time I had 2 of those adds come out it was a wipe.
Once Onyxia is in phase 3 it will be pretty much like phase 1, only she will gain one ability: mass fear. So you will want to keep your minion topped off at all times, so if you get feared it doesn't die. Phase 3 only took me about 4 attempts, while phase 2 took like about 40-50 attempts, so do not worry about phase 3, when you can get through phase 2, you got it.
I was using 10/31/0 Demonology spec.
Metamorphosis/Immolate/Felguard (prime glyphs)
Shadow Bolt/Soul Link/Voidwalker (major glyps)
Minor glyphs don't matter.
You will want to bring draconic flasks, drums (of the forgotten kings), food buffs, volcanic potions, etc. anything to bring up your dps in phase 2.
You should be using the Voidwalker throughout the whole fight, yes I thought my dps would be higher with the Felguard, but the Voidwalker has like 180k hp once you have the glyph for it, so health funnel will heal for more.
You will definitely want to use addons such as: Omen, TargetPercent, DBM, anything else you think can help you.
Good luck!

Just soloed her in patch 4.3 on feral druid at 85. Took 40 minutes and a bunch of frenzied regenerations to save my ***. The air phase was a pain ... finally got her back on the ground by spamming faerie fire on her as well as standing underneath her while killing the adds & whelps with swipe and thrash.

I remember my previous attempts at soloing her as a Blood DK in FL DPS gear being disastrous, but as my DPS gear is currently i387 and tilted mastery I thought I would give it another try -- got her down with absolutely no problem in 12m 4s. My only buff was
大师药剂
which proved wholly unnecessary.
only activated twice, during the P1-P2 transition, and I will be saving IBF to make that smoother next time.
To speed P2 up, I was hoping that the Gurthalak proc would prioritize Ony like my ghoul insists on. That may be the case, but I only ever saw it target her a couple of times which I presume is a range issue. Nevertheless, P2 is so light on incoming damage that you might as well use Gurthalak to get through it quickly. If surviving P1 in DPS gear is an issue, it would of course be the first item to swap out.
I'm very pleased she's going into my weekly retro-raid rotation for rare mounts. :3
edit: A couple of months later, my gear is only up to i393 but I've gotten a kill down to 6m25s. Save everything you have to dump into her during the P1-P2 transition; I had her down to 51% before starting to deal with the whelps tonight, which is over half the phase.

Soloed 10m onyxia as ret today in mostly 397 gear on the first try. It wasn't very hard at all. However some special talents are quite useful and selfless healer is a must have.
I Specced 2/2 selfless healer, 2/2 Eternal Glory, 2/2 Last word, and 1p in Divinity. Also glyphed WoG.
P1: I used seal of insight, resistance aura, and divine protection glyphed on every breath where I was low. I switched to devotion outside of those times. Just healed with wog whenever I went sub 35% health, and used a normal rotation other than that. (you need some luck with parrys/dodges, since she does hit moderatly hard, and if you can't heal yourself because your CS got parried, it could result in a death, so be ready with LoH)
P2: This is the trickiest phase. Seal of Righteousness for the whelps and just spam divine storm which heals you at the same time. WoG yourself when needed. Onyxia is out of range for your melee attacks (crusader strike, melee hits and TV) I used focus macros on her with Exor, HoW, and Judge while using my TV's and Divine storms on whelps/drakes.
P3: If you get here it's most likely a kill. Same as p1 but with fears added. Do not be close to any of the sides, stay with your back against the far wall, and just repeat P1. I'm a human so I trinketed the fears when I could, but it shouldn't be necessary.
Hope it helped if any of you rets are gonna try.

My friend and I 2-manned Onyxia last night.
382 Resto Shammy and 385 Balance Druid.
IMO the hardest part of this fight is taking out the adds that spawn when she goes into air phase. Right as they spawn i (shammy) would drop a magma totem to help my druid friend with a little extra AoE dps, while she used starfall then thunderstorm to take them out. Dodging the fire is fairly easy as long as u keep an eye on where she's coming from before she releases it. Other than that i just kept her Earth Shielded and spammed Healing surge unless she dropped lower than 50% at which point i'd use Greater Healing Surge till she was back up above 75%. Its a very healing intensive fight considering the "Tank" was wearing leather, but as long as i kept her at/above 65ish% no hits were strong enough to take her health too low.
No mount dropped, but now we know its 2-mannable so we'll be running it every week in an effort to get it.
Good luck to all of u out there trying to 2-man this, just wanted to post and let everyone know it IS possible, so keep the aoe's flying and the heals spammed, and have a fun time of it!

So, finally after much blood, sweat and many tears I managed to solo her as MM-hunter today. My item-level is 384. I wouldn't recommend doing this w/o 2/5 and at least a 744 bow/gun. I went with a turtle as my pet.
Okay so the fight breaks down into three phases:
P1
: very easy tank n spank. Only important thing here is how you position her with your pet. I put pet on passive and put up MD and just ran at Ony firing at her and running through her with my pet having agro but not attacking her yet. Once you and your pet are at the back of her cave, directly behind where she lay originally, send your pet in and move to the right. Don't panic if you take quite a bit of dmg during this opening move, you'll get it back before P2 begins. Keep mend pet and MD up and just burn her down. At 65/66 % P2 will begin.
P2
: the absolutely most tricky part of the fight. She will turn around and start walking towards the entrance to the cave. Important that your pet is still set at passive, press follow so that it stops attacking Ony and runs to you. Get as much dps off at Ony as she walks away, DO NOT FOLLOW HER. This is where I learned a key difference from most tacts I've read before. Most guides will tell you to go into the middle of the room, where the two floor plates kind of meet. This might work fine for some but I failed again and again this way, mainly because this involves having to micro manage your pet more by sending it to the back of the cave. Instead, once she starts walking move you and your pet to where your pet has been tanking her during P1, at the very back of the cave. Onyxia will now fly up into the air and start flying towards you while stopping to shoot fireballs at you. Ignore these, they are inconsequential. You probably won't get to do much dmg to her yet because right about now the first wave of whelps will spawn and come at you. They will come from both sides of the cave. Once the first whelp is about 5-10 yards out of the cave you hit FD. This will send them all back into their alcoves and give you an extra 10-20 seconds to dmg Ony. If you do this too late the whelps will be within agro range of your pet and will come and attack. If this happens I recommend staying FD'd. And resetting.
Once the whelps are inside their alcoves, stand up and pop Rapid Fire. Burn down Ony as hard as possible while keeping an eye on two things. First the whelp alcoves and second the entrance to the cave where large adds will eventually come. You're going top pop Readiness and be ready to FD at the first sight of a big add. This will coincide with the whelps coming at you for the second time. If the whelps are early pop Deterrence. When you see the big add enter the cave hit FD and it will walk out. Then get up, pop MD and Rapid Fire again and kill the whelps asap. Don't be bummed if this takes quite a few attempts to get right. All the time you're going yo want to keep an eye on the cave ent and save FD for the next big add. For this to work you need to keep your pet in the last 20% of the cave or the big add will see it and come in. If this happens it's not an automatic fail but it makes it harder.
Once the first wave of whelps are down start burning Ony down again. More whelps (though fewer than the first wave) will spawn again before you get her into P3 - unless you're super fast :) Get her to 40% and P2 ends she lands and no more adds will spawn.
P3
: most will say that if you make it this far you will get her down as P3 is more or less just tank and spank like P1 save for a short duration fear which is very manageable. What CAN mess you up is if you still have adds alive from P2.
5-6 whelps at 50% hp is fine. 10+ whelps plus a big add and most likely you'll die.
I found this video that greatly helped me :

Soloable as an
85 atonement discipline priest
.
Spec
I used this spec, which maximizes passive mitigation:
http://www.wowhead.com/talent#bfGs0RcbcorobuMZ0b:mqodaVz0V
This spec increases the odds that your atonement healing will keep up with incoming damage, increasing the amount of time you can spend nuking instead of healing.
I did a test run with shadow first, and it didn't go that well. It's probably doable, but much harder than discipline. I don't recommend doing this as shadow at 85.
Gear
I used
Rathrak, the Poisonous Mind
as my weapon and a raid-finder
Cunning of the Cruel
as one of my trinkets. I highly recommend them, as they make killing whelps much easier, safer and faster. The
4-piece healing set bonus from Dragon Soul
is very helpful. I reforge everything to haste/spirit.
Seal of the Seven Signs
or
Insignia of the Corrupted Mind
also make good trinkets to go along with Cunning.
The Fight
Throughout the fight:
Use inner fire.
Shield every rapture cooldown, and only when rapture is up.
Penance on cooldown if you need the healing, preferably right after a shield. Do a 1-tick Penance to refresh Grace right before it expires if you don't need the healing.
Cast Renew while you're in the air on knockbacks to not waste a global cooldown (assuming you don't need to shield for rapture).
Phase 1
is easy, just nuke and shield. Put your back to the wall behind Onyxia.
Phase 2
isn't too hard for this spec.
Initial Whelps:
Pre-shield, mending, and renew when the whelps come. You can mind sear a group of them as they fly in range of you. Hit shadowfiend and fade the whelps onto it. Power Infusion yourself and keep mind searing until fade is about to expire. You can shield your shadowfiend if you think it will die before fade ends. When fade ends, start spamming holy nova and kite the whelps in circles until they die. Pain Suppression yourself if you need to, or just for the heck of it. Keep shielding for rapture during this time, refresh Grace with Penance, and stop to Greater Heal or Flash Heal yourself if you need to.
Onyxian Lair Guards:
Just tank them and nuke them down with Holy Fire/Smite. You don't need to move out of blast wave.
Gradual Whelp Spawns:
I just holy nova these until I see a Rathrak weapon proc and Cunning trinket proc happen, then go back to nuking Onyxia or a Lair Guard while the poison DoT ticks. Repeat when the proc cooldowns are about ready again. For me this kept their numbers low enough that they never became a problem.
Onyxia:
Avoid deep breaths and Holy Fire/Smite her when there's no Lair Guards and you're not overrun by whelps. If she's on the other side of the room when a Lair Guard dies, you might not get much damage on her before the next Lair Guard spawns.
Phase 3
is also easy. Fear ward yourself when Onyxia is landing. Kill any remaining Lair Guards, then whelps, and heal yourself as needed. Once it's just Onyxia, the rest of the fight is as easy as phase 1.

As Blood dk, some tips on ph2:
Instead of just using Death Coil, Icy Touch & Outbreak, try using Heart Strike on the whelps, it does cleave Onyxia. Also Blood Boil hits Onyxia for a nice amount.
Just did my weekly run in dps gear + Blackhorn mace, it took me 6 mins & 41 seconds.
Sadly no mount but on the brighter side she finally dropped the Quel'Serrar ^^.

Solo'd as 389 prot warrior. Very easy with second wind. The big adds give victory rush procs in phase 2. Its just a matter of using thunderclap directly under her, heroic throw, heroic leap, and shockwaving her till she lands. Once she lands its GG!
edit: she dropped 9g and 40 silver.

I haven't tried to solo Onyxia earlier but as of 5.0.4 it is really easy to do as a Blood DK.
It just takes a little bit of time but i wasent in any real danger during the fight.
Phase 1 is just DPS, can be nice to stand against the wall opposite to the entrance of the room so you don't get knocked in to the whelps.
Phase 2 you just have to kill the adds and try to get some ranged attacks on Onyxia, not a big problem but it takes some time.
Phase 3 is just DPS.
I guess you could do it as Frost to but i haven't tried that yet.

EDIT- So, to update the below, which was written when the level cap was still 85, I've been soloing Ony now at 90 as both Prot and Ret, with no real difficulty at all. My current gear level is somewhere around the 450-460 range, but I also pulled it off in Ret spec as a fresh 90 in level 430ish gear. No part of this fight is really that challenging anymore, nor does it take the 10-15 mins it used to.
Just recently (patch 5.04) started soloing her on my Pally in Prot spec. Pretty easy, if not long, fight. Couple thoughts:
1) I use
for this fight. Maybe if you're feeling saucy or if you're more skilled than I,
would be the right choice for you. I can see how the latter would certainly shorten Phase 2, with the dot it applies, which is nice considering we can only hit her with Judgement, Avenger's Shield, and Holy Wrath.
2) The biggest risk I've encountered comes in Phase 2 when the adds begin to spawn. They usually do a little bit of damage to you and be ignored while you stay targeted on Onyxia herself. If you ignore them for too long, though, you'll have a giant mass of adds that you won't be able to burst down due to the AOE damage cap, and that can spell out your doom. Really, it's not very likely that you won't be able to mitigate or outheal the damage, but I felt it's worth mentioning since I died once or twice for that very reason (I wasn't paying enough attention). I usually ignore the adds until the whelp waves hit, and then try to clear them out before going back to the boss.
Happy hunting!

Mage solo strategy:
No longer soloable at 85 as fire as of 5.0 patch due to passive Blazing Speed being removed.
It is, however, soloable as frost (but requires more or less best in slot gear), and the following strat will work at 90 as well.
Talents used: Ice Floes, Ice Barrier, Ring of Frost, Greater Invisibility, Frost Bomb (all these are manditory)
Glyphs used: Water Elemental, Frost Nova, Evocation
Used Frost Armor.
Phase 1: Open the fight by positioning your water elemental against a wall about 40y from the entrance, ON PASSIVE, then have it attack the boss. Use frostbolts to heal your pet and make sure you don't pull aggro - this is accomplished by not hitting the boss yourself. Only heal your pet. Put the pet on focus and have a frostbolt @focus macro. When the boss reaches about 85-90%, pop mirror images and cooldowns to push her to 65% before the images expire. Make sure your pet doesn't die, you still need to heal it.
Phase 2: Position yourself in the middle of the room and slowly move towards the back so whelps funnel towards you. Drop a ring of frost just as the whelps reach you and put frost bomb on one, refresh Ice Barrier. Cast Frozen Orb into the pack. When Frost Bomb goes off combined with Frozen Orb's damage, most of the whelps should die, any that remain simply nova / pet nova / pick off with ice lances.
Damage the boss down to about 41% and stop. Kill any adds / whelps which come in, proritizing big adds and using FoF/BF procs to kill them. Whelps can just be nova'd / ring'd endlessly but large adds are stun/root immune.
Phase 3: When Mirror Images are off cooldown and no whelps/adds are incoming, pop cooldowns/time warp/icy veins/potion and burn the boss down as quickly as possible. Don't use Mirror Images until the boss has landed and done her first fear. You should be able to drop her below 25% before the first fear. You can use invisibility to drop threat onto images here, but they die in one hit each so this has to be done as quickly as possible.
The fight will work the same way at 90 but with considerably higher health pools and damage you probably won't need to bother using your pet to whittle her HP at the start.

Soloed her as fury at 85 as soon as second wind got enabled, full dps gear + souldrinker LFR and normal blackhorn shield for p1 and ofc defensive stance and kiting with heroic leap when she crit me or using die by the sword.
Then on p2 souldrinker and gurthalak LFR, berserker stance, aoeing the whelps, then killing the guardians and bladestorm each time on whelps.
Using ofc die by the sword\disarm\heroic leap rotation when guardians have ignite weapon active and get close to me.
On p3 trying to get with as few adds as possible, especially big ones, then it's just like p1, but she hits less hard, so should be gg here.
On dk at 85 it's pathetic as blood, doable also on 25-man, just takes longer and outhealing onyxia in dps gear is actually challenging there.
But on 10-man it takes 4-5 mins, and you can leave whelps alive most of the time for vengeance on p2 and p3.

Soloable as an undergeared 89 enhance shaman inefficiently using cooldowns..
Although this may elicit a "so what" response, my point is to provide a measurement of level, gear, and skill that was successful. She should be soloable by most, if not all, classes when decently geared at level 90.
Solo'd today on my first try MoP attempt. Gear level was 420ish. Phase 2 was the trickiest part because it took time to effectively deal with the adds (i.e., time for me to LEARN how to deal with the adds) and damage Onyxia until entering Phase 2. Once I was able to down a wave before the next one arrived, leaving a little time to damage Onyxia, I managed to knock her down. Some type of self-healing is a must.
Good luck fellow mount hunters! Despite the horrid drop rate, with account-wide mounts available we should start seeing a lot more of these in Org or IF/SW (wherever alliance hang out).......just hopefully not before I get mine (j/k).

Soloable easy as a Paladin retri level 90 pre-raid geared.
The "tricky" part is the air phase but the adds that spawns is relatively easy to gather and kill.
On the air phase i used: Jugment, exorcism, prism and avenging wrath. I used Seal of Insight just to be sure but it wasn't needed.
The fire she casts doesn't do any threatening damage anymore.

Soloing as melee:
General:
As far as I know
, the drop chance of the mount is the same for 10 and 25 player mode, so do the fight on 10.
In phase 1, stay at the far end, so that Onyxia has to walk over to the entrance for her lift-off once she's at 65%, giving you time you damage her some more. At level 90 and with good enough gear, using cooldowns correctly and reapplying DoTs just before lift-off, this may take her to 40% already. If not, see below:
潜行者
:
Pick up the talent
飞镖投掷
(may substitute with
刀扇
when there are adds around, also hits Onyxia so it grants CP) and finish with
猩红风暴
.
Disclaimer: my rogue isn't high-level enough to attempt this, so this is theoretical advice.
Feral
德鲁伊
:
Pick up the talent
. Be sure to reapply Rip in the last moment before lift-off, take care of the whelps, then use HotW and spam
愤怒
(don't bother with
月火术
, it does not receive a significant buff from HotW)
If this somehow fails to take her to 40%, note that
痛击
and
still hit Onyxia if you use it below her. If you are forced into Bear Form, use
on her (see the Heroic Throw macro below)
战士
:
As usual, with the talent
复苏之风
you are technically unkillable. Which is good because this may take a certain time.
All AoE attacks also hit Onyxia!
旋风斩
should be spammed if there is nothing else to do.
被烧毁的雕文
is an option, as Onyxia often moves. Use
嗜血
/
致死打击
on adds to generate Rage.
英勇投掷
may be macroed* to target Onyxia.
雷霆一击
doesn't do much damage, but it's preferable to a
顺劈斩
when there are whelps, and as Arms,
does more damage
.
Tier 4 talent: I've not yet determined whether
剑刃风暴
or
震荡波
are better, but
巨龙怒吼
should not be taken.
Fury:
强化旋风斩
will make
怒击
hit 1-3 more targets after 1-3 uses of Whirlwind - this is random, so with whelps around, it's possible you don't hit Onyxia with this.
Arms:
Keep
up and autoattack adds.
No specific advice for Enhancement
萨满祭司
or
死亡骑士
, as these have several baseline ranged abilities.

Solo'd as an Affliction warlock in
25m
. I am ilvl479 in mostly 489 MSV/valor gear with a few pieces from heroic dungeons. I think it is doable with less gear but the more purples you have the better. It was an easy kill, but it took about 12 min maintaining a consistent 60k dps on the boss and adds. Expect your first kill to take around 10-15 min.
Here's some tips:
- Harvest Life, Dark Bargain, and Grimoire of Supremacy are mandatory talents. The former makes life so much easier on the whelps, Dark Bargain will useful when the adds become overwhelming, and GoSup provides a Voidlord as your tank. There's a lot of damage going out so anything that can help cushion it is a big bonus.
- Glyph of Soul Shards, if you don't already have it, is required. Glyph of Siphon Life is also highly recommended due to the spamming of Soulburn: Seed of Corruption during the whelp phase.
- As for consumables, I only had a basic
迷雾汤
and a health potion. It wasn't much, but I recommend bringing both because they are very useful. Obviously have a Healthstone on hand also. Bring flasks/pre-pots/drums only if you want a more efficient kill but they aren't necessary.
Open with your basic rotation but after this initial burst be conservative with your Soul Shards until phase 2. Try to maintain 2 Soul Shards at all times until phase 3: one for Seed of Corruption, and one for Harvest Life or Health Funnel to keep you or your Voidlord alive if either of you get low. Do not use Terrorguard/Abyssal yet.
When phase 2 hits, try as best you can to maintain your DoTs on Onyxia. During this phase, Onyxia herself doesn't do too much damage so don't be afraid of having to dodge anything she throws at you. When the whelps come out, spam SB:SoC and Harvest Life: it should be enough to maintain your health at a healthy number. Once the big adds spawn,
direct your Voidlord to them and kill them as quickly as possible
because they can pack a punch on a clothy. If there are whelps and big adds alive at the same time, apply SB: SoC as soon as the whelps come out and focus the big add. If you get low, you have plenty of cushions: Abyssal if there are too many adds, your defensive CDs, Healthstone, and health potion are all helpful.
Eventually you will hit Phase 3, and if there are any adds remaining kill them before focusing on Onyxia. Here, you can unload all of your CDs on her and do as much damage as you can, there is no need to be conservative about using your Soul Shards for Soul Swap or Haunt anymore. If you managed to save your Terrorguard CD, now would be the time to use it. While she won't be doing very much damage to you, keep an eye on your Voidlord. After a long fight, she will be dead and you can collect your shiny loot.
Apologies for the tl;dr nature of this post but I hope it will be useful to someone out there. Happy dragon slaying ;)

So I now solo farm for this mount on SEVEN characters:
1) Arms warrior level 90, item level 484: this one is kind of a speedkill, I just use all dps cooldowns at 65% (3,2 millions), so she skips completely the air phase, and I take stormbolt talent to deal a lot of damage on onyxia while you cannot attack her cause she's flying. You don't have to worry about the adds, just nuke her, can kill her in like 1 min 20 with some timing and crit luck.
2) Blood dk level 90, item level 484 full dps gear: also a speedkill, but I got tired of soloing 25-man, was also doable at 85, so no challenge at 90: I also use cooldowns such as DRW, ERW and dps trinket on 65% and even here I don't have to worry about the adds, I just nuke onyxia, and it takes 1 min 48 on a decent kill; if she doesn't go straight in p3, I just use blood boil, death coil, icy touch (death siphon is also useful).
3) Prot paladin level 90, item level around 450, full dps gear except shield and 1 hand weapon: this was also doable at 86 in 371 item level, but now at 90 it takes 8-10 mins, I just use sacred shield and defensive cds while dpsing down onyxia in p1, lay on hands when I'm at 5% to not waste dps on her, and then in air phase I use avenger's shield and judgement and also word of glory (glyphed). P3 transition is not a big problem, just kill big adds as prio. Also done as ret, but took 1 more minute, so not worth it.
4) Combat rogue level 90, item level around 450: I start with cds like shadow blades, adrenaline rush, troll racial, and keep recuperate up (also using evasion), when evasion ends I use preparation and activate combat readiness, and I also use killing spree on p1, does a bit of damage, so also heals with leeching poison. For p2 I chose shuriken toss (90 talent), so I can get her down quite fast, and I use evasion on whelps the first time. P3 transition must be quite precise here, avoid having too many whelps, you can have 1 big add, no problems. I use again evasion, preparation, evasion, combat readiness on onyxia, and in case cloak of shadows glyphed, and ofc dps cooldowns to get her before she kills me, takes like 6-8 mins in total.
5) Arcane mage level 90, item level around 450: I start with arcane power (glyphed) and images to get her in p2, I don't use TW; then p2 is quite easy thanks to invocation talent, but I use nether tempest + arcane explosion spam to kill whelps. Then must be careful on p3 transition, adds up could mean a wipe, and I use time warp and arcane power again (and ofc images) on this phase, and if onyxia gets in melee range before she dies, I blink or iceblock while ice barrier is ready again and kite a bit, takes like 8-10 mins in total.
6) and 7) Blood dk level 82, item level 267 and 309, however level 82 quest gear + 1-3 blues 415: these are the longest fights I do, 23-26 mins, and it's about kiting onyxia in p1 and using death siphon talent, only way to survive his damage; requires good blood dk experience, it's really hard, will need to use all cds in p1. Then p2 is a bit easier, I always save unholy blight and DRW for blood boil spam on the adds and the guardian when they come, in the meantime I outbreak and do some death siphon on onyxia, this is why it takes almost 30 mins; useful glyphs for this fight are VB and AMS for survival on p1 and p3, and glyph of outbreak for faster p2, as you can use it on onyxia each time it expires. P3 is again similar to p1, with this low dps you'll have to do a good transition again, but you can use army of the dead to distract the adds and kill them first. Then beating onyxia is just a matter of kiting and using cds wisely, like on p1.
130 runs total so far, never saw the mount, and the reason I'm also doing it with level 82 blood dks is: dks are the only class which can solo it at 82 in this low level of gear, and furthermore they start at 55, so it's much faster; took me like 42 hours of levelling WITHOUT heirlooms to be ready to kill onyxia, if you feel unlucky and want more chars, blood dks are the way to go.

Soloing Onyxia 25-man for Hunters
Ony25 is a relatively straightforward solo for a prepared level 90 hunter.
General:
- Glyphs: Misdirection, Mending, Animal Bond
- Spec: Survival
- Beneficial Talents: Crouching Tiger, Spirit Bond, Thrill of the Hunt, Glaive Toss/Barrage
- +/- food, fort scrolls, drums, flasks to taste
- Dust off your old Tier 5 2-set, or go put one together (I use shoulders/helmet, but go with whatever lets you wear the best remaining gear possible).
- Item level: 490 (baseline), 442 (with T5 set equipped)
- Fight length: 10 minutes or so, depending on gear and skill
Phase 1:
- Begins on pull, ends at 65% boss health
- Boss-only ground phase.
- Garden variety tank & spank. Misdirect generously, etc.
- Flank Onyxia to avoid damage.
Phase 2:
- Starts at 65% boss health.
- Air phase with adds (Whelps, Lair Guards)
- Hit all your ranged DPS cooldowns as soon as Onyxia lifts off. The more damage you can burst, the shorter this phase will be.
- When whelps release, you can use Deterrence to buy time for them to gather around you. When it wears off, Disengage/Misdirection/Multi-shot.
- With Serpent Sting applied via Multi-shot, the whelps will die quickly, and the damage will provide heals over time to your pet via your T5 set bonus.
- Misdirect the Lair Guards to your pet as soon as they appear, there's no benefit to waiting with them the way there is for the whelps.
Phase 3:
- Starts at 40% boss health, ends when she dies.
- Ground phase +/- adds (if you killed them during phase 2 there aren't any more, if you didn't get them all down they'll persist here)
- This is basically phase 1 all over again, with the addition of Bellowing Roar which will periodically fear you for a few seconds. At level 90, it's inconsequential.
- When she lands, Feign Death/Misdirect to establish pet aggro.
- Finish any adds that are left, and then burn the boss.
- Kill, loot, sigh forlornly that the mount didn't drop AGAIN, and get ready to do it all again next week.
Good luck, and happy hunting!

25-man is also soloable as a 490-geared balance druid, but somewhat difficult. I used Typhoon, Nature's Vigil, and Incarnation, though Soul of the Forest could also be good to cycle eclipses faster and keep your mana up.
Start with shrooms planted near one of the whelp caves so you don't have to set them later.
Phase 1 is nothing special, but the knockbacks interrupting your casts are irritating, and if you land up on the wall you'll get moved back to the floor interrupting you again. I hit 3min cooldowns at the beginning, they were recharged right as P2 started.
Phase 2 is a bit of a cluster. Start with full health and a solar eclipse, Barkskin when the second whelp pack reaches you, and be prepared to Typhoon & run when the damage gets too high. Tab-MF/SF and run around, firing the SS procs at Onyxia if you can or just whittling down the number of whelps until you can safely tank and AOE again. With all the running around, Starfall often comes off cooldown on its own, and is a big help in thinning out the adds. Keep MoU+Renewal or NS+HT handy in case you're at low health when a fresh wave of whelps arrives. Whenever your big damage cooldowns are ready, get some solid damage on Ony and let Starfall mop up all the remaining adds.
Phase 3 is easy, even if you have some adds hanging around.

A good tip for tanks soloing this is to not kill the 4 elites before Onyxia since they hit pretty decently, keep them on you to keep your vengeance high to kill Onyxia faster.
For Blood DK's - Get the talent Rolling Blood (if you haven't already). You can't melee her in the air phase, but you can Blood Boil her. Make sure your diseases never fall off and spend your Runic Power on Death Coil's and the air phase should be done with in no time.

Hunters should be able to solo her in 25-man with no problem. Spirit Beast heal + Spirit Bond is enough to survive having all of the whelplings on you. I didn't even need to use Mend Pet during the air phase. (495 ilevel)
She's out of reach of Kill Command, so you might want Blink Strike over Murder of Crows for increased damage on her in the air. I'll try Survival instead next week, compare the increased kill speed of the whelps vs. the loss of the heal.

I solo'd it as a level
80 Blood DK ilvl 344 (armory link)
, trust me I'm an engineer! It took me 9min 55, although I could have gone quicker as I failed to refresh my
therefore loosing my dot on Onyxia at around 44%. Also as an engineer I did not use my rocket launcher every time it was available.
I used a gear mainly focussed on dodge and parry to obtain over 102.4% avoidance, (in my case slightly over 1% overcap) and it seems that the diminishing returns doesn't apply there since I only got hit 3 times in melee from Onyxia on the entire fight. Once while moving her with my nitro boost at the start of the fight while I was showing her my squishy back and the two others in p3 while feared. Also if you have the unhit cap you have a nice perk from
since you lose the stacks very slowly because you only get hit by special strikes allowing you to get an almost permanent -20% damage taken.
P1: 100-65%
It is quite straight forward. Just tank her in a corner not to get bumped in anything or get falling damages. You may use with
被烧毁的雕文
if you feel like you're taking too much damage from magic spell but you will be fine with only your
灵界打击
if you don't screw up.
P2: 65-40%
She gets into the air and quite frankly it's the hardest part of the encounter since you can't hit her in melee for 25% of her life.
You need to have both dots on her and constantly refresh them with
not to lose , otherwise it will take so much more time.
When you have secured both of these dots you need to use
亡者大军
so they can get all the adds that are spawning from both sides of the room. Meanwhile you need to focus yourself on getting as much a runic power to blast Onyxia with
凋零缠绕
for extra damages.
You will have to stand as much as possible under Onyxia to ensure that when you dps both the whelps and the guardian that occasionally spawn you hit Onyxia too with your
. You also might want to be careful on the deep breath because it frankly could kill you. It's not hard to dodge though.
When she finally goes down to ~41% quickly kill all remaining adds and then allow her to go into p3.
P3: 40% to down.
Well it's almost like the p1. The only difference being that she now fears you but if you have survived to this point I'm pretty sure you can't die from a few seconds of being feared and hit on your back and the eruptions that aren't very dangerous. The only 2 trikes I got from her in melee at this point was because I got feared and failed to refresh my
精通:鲜血护盾
. When I finally killed her I had all my life and all the 89991 hp I could have as a shield from
精通:鲜血护盾
(you cannot have more than 100% of your total life as a shield).
I managed to down the boss with slightly less than 20k dps (considering than most of the fight was p2 and I couldn't hit the big turkey). On the almost 10 mins encounter I got hit for 452022 damages, 85% being Onyxia and only 4.1% of these damages being from melee. I also got 10% of the other overall damages from add that struck me on my back.
I hope you will find this useful. Good hunt.

Just did it today on 10-Player Normal to test the waters. I'm a level 90 BM Hunter with 338k (ilvl 464)
It was a pretty straightforward fight - tank and spank for the most part - when the Whelps come out it's a good idea to at least clear out most of them before focusing on Onyxia again - because all you're pet will really be doing is standing beneath Onyxia when she's flying, without doing anything.
The fight didn't take too long - maybe 15 minutes or so, so it's really easy nowadays :D

Soloed as a Fury warrior in 25m mode, my ilvl was 516 and second wind kept me up throughout the fight, was a 11 min and 16s long fight. Poppped CDs right as she was taking flight, managed to burn her to 51% as she took flight, the next 11% took forever as she not meleeable, so I had heroic throw on CD as well as keeping the adds under her for WW / DR (all AOEs hits her). Could've been a little faster if I had used "throw" in between add waves but wouldn't have shaved off a lot of time as throw was hitting for like 400 dmg. I popped RC/Demo Banner/DBTS to stay alive in p3, although I reckon it isnt necessary as she never brought me below 100k hp. Also make sure you save your zerker rage for her fears in p3. Straight forward fight with enough gear.

Soloed 10M normal as a level 90 ilevel 453 elemental shaman.
Phase one is straight forward - nuke nuke nuke. Also remember to
Thunderstorm
on cooldown if you find you are burning mana.
In Phase two, first pop
Shamanistic Rage
(to conserve mana) and then drop an
Earthquake
on yourself and drop your
Earth Elemental Totem
to help. I also popped
Astral Shift
to further reduce incoming damage during Phase 2. Do not attack Onyxia until you've defeated all the whelps/adds. I just spammed
Chain Lightning
until they were all down (yay for Shamanistic Rage!) Once all the whelps are done, hit Onyxia with a fresh
Flame Shock
, pop
Ascendance
and spam
Lava Burst
until she comes down for phase 3. It's quite satisfying to watch her HP melt away... the time to phase 3 should be really short.
Once Onyxia is down for phase 3 the instance is yours. Nuke her hard and cross your fingers for the mount!
Good luck :)

I just soloed her as a level 89 destruction warlock.. My tactic at the first run was just spamming everything i had. I died when she got on 60% health because of the dragons. I would say that when the dragons come in the first time, use Dark Bargain and when it goes out, use Unending Resolve. After that just pop up a Summon Abyssal and from there just use Rain of Fire, and when you're getting lower on health just use Ember Tap (it takes 1 burning ember, thats why you should use Rain of Fire, so that you get them real quick) and just keep doing that till she gets back on the ground, and continue the fight. Its a simple and easy fight, did it back i vanilla, waay harder. Remember to use Voidlord, since he takes the spot as a tanker, and actually doesnt go down on health at any point of the fight, so that you only have to focus about the fight. Good luck with the farming for transmog and the mount!

Although hardly relevant in 5.2 Onyxia is pitifully easily soloable as an 87 prot paladin in assorted MoP quest gear. As long as you're patient (since you don't have many ranged abilities) you can easily beat phase 2, and from there it's a cakewalk. Just be patient (or get to 90 and get one of the talents there for an extra ranged ability to use on her)

Short and sweet for Warriors (Fury especially, not required though) if you're new to solo'ing this and are scratching your head on Phase 2.
Spec Bloodbath and Dragon Roar, macro'd with Reckless/Banner/Str potion.
Bring Ony to the back of the room, DPS as usual, but Pop all cooldowns (macro) at 70% HP and walk with her as she prepares to take flight. The time it takes for her to actually leave melee range is long enough to have utterly destroyed her, and the Bloodbath DoTs will be strong enough to finish the entire phase 2 for you if all cooldowns were popped.
PS: this info is irrelevant if you've never played a warrior before, but if u have, you'll understand what a rediculously long fight this can be if you don't follow some variation of the above. So please don't down vote unless you are a warrior and disagree with this strategy or find it generally flawed.

Tips for soloing as a lvl 90 Rogue:
Leeching Poison and Recuperate will keep you alive for the whole fight, no problem. Use Shiv for an extra boost of health if necessary.
Shuriken Toss
is not optional. In phase 2 you
must
deal ranged damage. Deadly Throw is a less optimal alternative. Believe me, it's worth the Tome of Clear Mind(s) to switch to Shuriken Toss for this fight.
That's it! If you just stick to those 2 (
especially Shuriken Toss
) you'll be fine! Enjoy your bag :D

I've solo'd Onyxia on 3 different toons.
Level 90 Frost Mage ilvl 503
- Ice Barrier makes this easy
Level 90 Ret Paladin ilvl 483
- I saved CDs until phase 3, I was glyphed for mass exorcism so all I had during Phase 2 was judgement with censure ticks; was still very easy.
-Updated - I found that taking her to the back of the room and when she starts to walk to the front for phase two, immediately blowing all cooldowns and smashing her before she gets to take off. Which results in her being below the phase 3 health line (40%) so she flys up, moves across the room and lands for a very short phase two.
Level 85 Survival Hunter ilvl 428
- Use turtle pet and mending glyph to keep it alive, misdirect to pet. Have a health pot just in case, never used a Master Healing Potion and still sruvived every time.
Reply with any questions I'll respond.

Lvl 90 Rogue Vs 25m = Achieves durring slow phase of fight.
This doesn't take any special Spec/talents/tricks (for assassination).
Open as usual CD's ETC run with the boss as she transitions to P2.
Kill adds as they spawn just for irritation purposes.
Go grab some whelps and AOE them for fun (it's an achieve as well).
At this point you think you have nothing else to do....Wrong.
FoK will hit Ony if you are near her Hit box.
Use the combo points generated to keep up Recup/Snd and use a combo of SS + RuP to put more deeps on the boss durring P2.
Doing this at 527 iLvl netted me a Moar dots + many whelps achieve.
No mount sadly.
Good luck to all those continuing to try for the mount.

Usually kill her in 10m and decided to go for 25m today, boring as can be and not worth it. MAYBE drops 1 extra item. 23M hp is slow as a tank very easy though, still no mount though. As a paladin tank I can spam avengers shield when she is in the air phase, the longer I keep her adds alive the better, and with it glyphed for single target + 30% extra damage its a great ranged spell

Frost DK solo guide: She don't hit that hard but use a defensive if you feel you need to, open up with all your burst, should your burst be high enough, you can get her to phase 3 almost instantly, if not, just spam the whelps with Howling Blast, then do the same with Onyxia, phase 3 is the same as phase 1 except you have an annoying fear, hope this helps for you DK's out there! Good luck with that insanely rare mount!

Bag Problems Be Gone!
I often checkout bosses here to see if they are soloable and if so by which classes so I thought I'd make a report;
At level 90 this fight is soloable for any class of almost any gear level!
Similar to Esploratore I decided to attempt this on all my chars, so here it goes;
Protection Paladin
, 427ilvl; (Actually have 480ilvl but accedently had Forarger's Gloves and Mist-Piercing Goggles Equipped /facepalm)
Fight took 6min and is super fun when p2 hits.
Dont clear trash just pull it and run Straight for Onyxia, pop Holy Avenger and Avenging Wrath to get to P2 ASAP.
When p2 hits the fight speeds up. You want to keep the adds alive, run in circle and keep Onyxia as your target.
You'll notice Grand Crusader proccing CONSTANTLY as you dodge/parry all the small Whelps.
When p3 hits, keep doing what you've been doing until she dies.
Super easy fight when done like this, just be sure to keep your health up and dont kill adds.
Arcane Mage
, 479ilvl.
You have to clear the 3 trash as they see through your invisibility.
Fight took 2 min.
Ice Barrier, set up 2 runes, engage, blow TW and nuke. When whelps spawn just flamestrike and arcane blast.
I found it very helpful to save Mirror Images for when the whelps reach me (P3 came at the same time.)
Haven't tried mage on lower ilvls but I assume it's gonna get hard if you are a fresh 90.
Blood Death Knight
, 474ilvl
Pull all 4 trash and engage Onyxia. Big adds will help you on this fight.
Took 4min 30 sec from I engaged the trash to the boss and trash were dead.
The key to this fight is basically spending all your Death Coils and Icy Touch's on Onyxia while spamming Death Strike on the big adds.
If the whelps become too much I have Rolling Blood talent and cast a Blood Boil.
EZ-Moade
Fury Warrior
, 470 ilvl
Slow dps and save up rage til 70%, Bloodbath, Skull Banner and Recklessness nuke your face off.
With Second Wind talent you can't really die.. So on p2 use your aoe abilities (Dragon Roar and Whirlwind hit Onyxia if you stand directly beneath her.)
Fight took me seconds over 5min.
I cannot understate the importance of Second Wind...
Demonology Warlock
, 457ilvl
Super standard. My gear isn't good but it still was a complete breeze.
On p2 throw a Hand of Gul'dan on the whelps hitting your Wrathguard and you'll be spamming Soul Fire in Meta until she's dead :)
Fight took 3min 20sec.
Marksman Hunter
, 434ilvl
Pet is tank spec, however it will frustrate you greatly...
Fight took just under 5min.
The trick here is to stay on Onyxia, I did not have the DPS (skill) to kill the whelps efficiently enough for it to be a good idea to kill them.
I misdirected everything to my pet, kept healing it and nuked Onyxia as much as I could.
When the adds would get agro from my healing I'd Feign Death.
Shadow Priest
, 438ilvl
Kill took just under 5min.
I took it slow and saved Vampiric Embrace for P2 as I expected I'd need it then.
I took abit more dmg than I thought in p1 so I spammed flasheal at one point.
On p2 you want to keep your dots on Onyxia, halo all the adds, then Mind Sear. Vampiric Embrace and focus on building Shadow Orbs.
Use Devouring Plague on Onyxia.
If the adds become a problem remember; Void Tendrils and Psychic Scream.
I forgot to use Shadowfiend so it's super soloable even as a priest.
Assasination Rogue
448ilvl.
Fight took me serveral tries, kill took 6min
A trick here is to use the trash mobs as pawns - use one of the trash mobs to get Slice and Dice + Recuperate refreshed right before starting the Onyxia encounter.
Start off with Evasion, feint on every flame breath, keep Rupture, slice and dice and recuperate at all times. Shiv whenever available.
Pop Vendetta + Shadow Blades on 65-70% and nuke as much as you can to make the air phase shorter.
Nuke Whelps ASAP, use big adds to build CP for Recuperate and Redirect + Shadowstep to get Rupture up on Onyxia.
P2 isn't that dangerous, make sure to keep Recuperate up so you hit p3 with 100% health.
Remember to use Sprint to kite adds.
When you hit 35% blow Vendetta + Shadow Blades & Nuke. Remember to still keep Recuperate up.
Elemental Shammy
, 439ilvl
p1 you want to take it slow. Heal yourself and relax.
Once p2 hits, pop BL and nuke like crazy, your goal is to get her under 40% by the time the Whelps reach you.
When the whelps started attacking me I use Shamanistic Rage put down Earth elemental, Magma Totem and Earthquake. From Blingtron I also got some G91 Landshark which worked wonders as my dps is quite low.
Remember to use Earthbind Totem and Thunderstorm.
Once all the adds are dead it's a kill. Remember to use Fire elemental and Tremor Totem and p3 is a breeze.
Fight took 3min.
Feral Druids
- 498 / 443ilvl
On the 498ilvl this is a joke, fight took about a minute.
On the 443ilvl you start the fight off slow, pop Inca + Berserk at 70% (make sure you are at the back of the room)
Nuke her down as far as you can, (i only got to 45%) use Trash + Swipe and Faerie Fire in Bearform to knock the last few % off.
When it comes to adds kite them with dash/darkflight/stampeding roar, when they are grouped well cast
barkskin and aoe them to death.
Fight took 4min.
Brewmaster Monk
434ilvl
I found it useful to stay under 35% as I could spam Expel Harm. This makes things go abit faster.
On P2 Spam Cracling Jade Lightning and Chi Wave.
Note that Rushing Jade Wind hits Onyxia, same goes for Spinning Crane Kick. So when the adds come spam those while jumping beneath her.
TL;DR - Aoe abilities hit Onyxia on Air Phase.
Slow DPS til 65%-70% then blow all CD's to make air phase short.

Soloed the 10 player version with my 85 blood death knight in tanking gear.
The fight is easy it just takes a while because blood death knights don't have many ranged attacks that do any serious damage except death coil and icy touch.
DPS her until she gets to 65% and flies up then use death coil, icy touch, outbreak and even death and decay to damage her until she gets to 40% and lands. You can ignore her abilities they're not a serious threat. I killed the whelps when they got annoying and I used the lair guards for death strike heals.

Just did this on 25M on my blood DK. Phase 2 was a pain in the ass, as you can only hit her with outbreak, blood boil and D&D.

Soloed Onyxia
easily on
hunter 90lvl (528 ilvl) BM
with sambas pet (cat), not tank pet.
I was using Mend Pet, but he doesn't needed that too often.
I used Multi-shot and Explosive trap on adds and command pet to fight with big dragonkins whenever they appeared.

A black and violet dragon that can disguise as a black-haired woman with unhealthy skin … could be a reference to Disney's Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty (1959) ;)

How to Solo with Fury Warrior!
Step one: Fix your talents and make sure you have Second Wind AND Storm Bolt!
Step Two: Make sure you got a healing pot.
Step Three: Now start fight as usual, charge in and burst as much as you can down till phase two when she starts flying. From this point on just Blood thirst, WW, and whatever else you like to the adds. while doing this boss has priority! This means take your THREE range attacks and hit her HARD! In this order:
Shattering Throw (which has 5 min CD BUT increases damage done so you want to apply it first when possible!)
Your 500% weapon damage Storm bolt
Heroic Throw, a sort of filler!
Thanks to Blood Thirst and Second wind you should have no issue surviving.
Step Four: At this point she has landed and your goal is to charge and Whirlwind all the remaining adds down and continue bursting her down. Remember that healing pot I mentioned? Once your second wind fades off go ahead and pop it. Why? Cuz your squishy, shes fearing, and shes cleaving your squishy butt when your still running like a chicken! So its a safety net. Burst as normal and don't forget about popping Berserker Rage during fears for extra damage and immunity to the fear.
Step Five: Pray for what you DONT want so what you DO want drops! Enjoy the loots!
Done and proven with a 1 handed duel wielding warrior, 50k dps averaged on fight, 467 ilvl.
Happy hunting!

Even in current LFR and Timeless gear, this is now an easy solo for anyone. It's not even a challenge on 25 man.
If you do find this to be too difficult and you're geared up to at least current LFR, you may want to fix your rotation and/or gems/enchants.

Not sure if this is useful for anyone. Soloing as a prot warrior on 25m takes forever but is doable if you have at least 25 minutes lol.

Is it just me or did it become much harder? I used to do it in 52 secs on my hunter, took me forever today, probably 5 to 10 minutes, seemed to have so much HP and the dragon kin started to come at me, never had that before

As a 462 rogue, there is
no possible way
of soloing this beast, even at level 90, regardless of well fed and flask buffs. She tore through my leather like it was cloth armor. I'd put each of her hits somewhere around 1/6 (roughly) of my health. And that's just her auto-attacks. Meanwhile, I was barely scratching her scale-encrusted hide. I could barely see the damage that I was dealing.
EDIT: Slap on some Leeching Poison, Glyph of Evasion and Recovery, Marked for Death, and your good to go! Just keep Recuperate up, by using MfD on the whelps and guardians. Might want to take Shadowstep too, to sneak in a few hits on Onyxia, while she's high up in the sky.

With 6.0.2, I can honestly say that as a rogue, this is ridiculously easy to solo, though I am at 530 or so. As Subtlety, I managed to get her down to about 10% before phase 2, and she cast a fireball and a breath once, each, before landing, at which point the DoTs had gotten her to 1 health, and she landed, letting me kill her with Throw, due to the DoTs having fallen off.

As a lvl 100 621 Boomkin, this can be 3-shotted. If she doesn't die immediately it's because she is entering her second phase, and you'll have to wait for her to land and realize that she's dead already. Just AoE the whelps that come out while she's in the air and collect your loot when she drops. Happy soloing!

Super easy even as a disc priest (10 man). Takes about 1 minute in total, meaning soloable for anyone at lvl 100. Good luck on the mount!

today, 37 mins ago, on 35th run, if you count all 4 characters that have been there. I was very happy guys, even though i wasn't farming her in like non-stop way, since i have pretty long breaks in game (3-5 months per each expansion easily). So, now i'm counting on phoenix drop from Kael'Thalas from the Tempest keep. I wish luck to all of you. farmers, let that dragon reins drop to you as fast, as possible. =)

I'm confused, been trying to farm the gowns in AQ and Onyxia is showing up on the map, and in the guides here that she is in the temple. I can't see her on any lvl, she is showing as a boss on the map? But this says she is a NPC. Never noticed her before. Can't find any track to where she is supposed to be, but then it is AQ with all its annoying pathways and levels.

Onyxia is not in the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj. She has her own area located in the southern parts of Dustwallow Marsh that is called Onyxia's Lair. WoW better fix there mistake.

For Everyone that is about to try and farm this mount just a warning. I have killed her on both 25 man attempts and 10 man attempts for a once a week on 14 characters 85+ for the last 16 weeks which makes 224 tries and no Onyxian drake. You have been warned!
